Reviews for Barnsdale Hall Hotel
Review 1:Breakfast was not nice. Standard of transport cafe. Whole place fairly souless. Wouldnt stay again
Review 2:Bed was quite comfortable but very small. View from the extremely 'compact' room was nice
Review 3:our room was nice with a large bathroom but our view out the window was a huge wall only 3 feet away.
Review 4:The location. The free use of the pool. The nice breakfast. the evening meals.
Review 5:We were there when the Xmas Party season was in full swing, which meant that the bar area was incredibly noisy, (meaning unpleasant) between 6 and 8 - especially for a couple just wanting a bar meal. Breakfast bacon was like a shoe sole - tough and overdone.
Review 6:Location fine, rooms really good, staff friendly and helpful. Food was really nice and well served.
Review 7:Room was too hot and pillows too hard. View from room was of a walkway and was noisy when people walked through.
Review 8:Location and setting were nice. Food was good.
Review 9:Barnsdale is really a timeshare facility with additional hotel rooms. It's laid out as a series of more recent accommodation blocks , of varying architectural merit. So the whole feel of the place is a club, rather than a hotel. The old hall is very grand, but other than check in reception there are no facilities in it. The bar and restaurant are in the leisure centre building. But on whole a decent place to stay for couple of nights. Hotel rooms are in many of accommodation blocks, and standard rooms have dull outlook. Worth checking when you book as to were you will be and if you want a view you will need a superior plus room.
Review 10:Location very picturesque right on the lake, conveniently placed for Oakham. Nice grounds. Leisure centre very good and rooms very clean and newly decorated, if a little plain. We stayed in a standard double room. Staff very pleasant and helpful.
Review 11:The hotels is set in grounds with the restaurant/bar & our accomodation in seperate buildings. Takes a little getting used to but actually they are all within a short walk, albeit lots of tight steps which was fine for us as a young fit couple, may be tricky to anyone less able. The bar area was the biggest let down. I'd expect a hotel of this standard to have a more intimate, private dining experience. The bar area is very relaxed, which great if you've been out and about walking or maybe come from using the leisure facilities, but not when you want to dress up and have a romantic meal/drinks. I'd brought dresses to change into for our evening meal, but ended up wearing what i travelled in as i would have been far too overdressed for the restaurant & bar for our evening meal!
Review 12:Our room was huge, well decorated with nice views. Bed comfy, shower good, huge bathroom! TV, 2 sofas, wardrobe for hanging clothes, dressing table and tea making facilites. We ate in the restaurant and could not fault the food or wine at all, and our waitress and the front of house were great!
Review 13:My room was dated and smelt musty. The shower was a mere trickle and considering it was priced at the same rate as other more modern spacious rooms was not worth the price.
Review 14:The overall look of the facilities was lovely and on a great location. The Edith weston suite was perfectbfor a wedding.
Review 15:The website is rather misleading. The building shown is very old & lovely, but the majority of the hotel rooms are not in that part, but in more modern blocks nearby. The older building is just the reception & then some guest rooms. (I imagine the more expensive ones). The room we stayed in was rather tired, but it was spacious & well equipped, with no view, but that is stated I believe. Also, there are a lot of steps to the breakfast/dining area (also in a modern part), and you have to go quite a way outside to get to it. We were out during the day and not there to use the hotel leisure facilities, so it was probably a bad choice on our part, as I felt it was expensive.
Review 16:The Hotel was in a lovely position, with good views over Rutland Water. Quiet setting.
Review 17:Nothing really. We thought the menu for Dinner was a little limited.
Review 18:The location and view from our room which was very comfortable. Excellent breakfast with pleny of choice.
Review 19:was a short stay away, before going into hospital, for major surgery on back, it was a lovely stay,we could,nt have asked for a more perfect hotel, will definitely be back, thank you
Review 20:Only problem we had was when checking in - only one person on reception on a long and complicated call about a booking, then there was a false fire alarm which could not be turned off.
Review 21:Lovely view of Rutland water from the balcony of our room
Review 22:A little more atmosphere in lounges slightly neglected .Staff need to engage more with customers busy with other things ,this could be not enough staff ?
Review 23:Closeness to Duffield beautiful grounds
Review 24:This location was the best. We only stayed for the one night however, we were able to use all the facilities we wanted, this is a hotel we would use again.
Review 25:No problems
Review 26:The lovely setting, views etc.we had dinner in the Bistro and was lovely and price was good for what we had. This was our 6th year anniversary after getting married here in October 2009. It holds special memories and was great to reminisce.
Review 27:The man on reception was very blasé. The restaurant and bar area VERY, VERY old fashioned. Needs modernising. The paintwork around the walls surround our room (outside), looked like 1950's. Waitresses although pleasant, were not at all smart or presentable.
Review 28:The location was convenient for our purpose
Review 29:The overall complex is rather up and down to the dining room and leisure facilities. Not suitable for people with disabilities or questionable fitness. The restaurant menu needs improving. Food very good but lacked enough choices.
Review 30:Excellent location, lovely room with a view.
Review 31:Went with another couple who also had a Standard Double Room but theirs was a lot bigger than ours. The toilet was very small, the sliding door to which didn't fit anywhere. It was only hung on the runners at the top with no guide at the bottom so could easily be swung inwards. You could get your fingers in the gaps at the side which didn't exactly make it soundproof nor in keeping with the notice on the door which asked you not shower with the door open to avoid setting off the fire alarm. would I go again - yes but not in that room!!
Review 32:Pleased with the service, cleanliness & facilities
Review 33:The dining room seemed under staffed, and also the bar, and most of the food at dinner was fine, apart from one dessert which a number of people ordered then didn't eat, as it was unpleasant
Review 34:The location was wonderful, and general information clear, only stayed one night so did not use all facilities available, but looked great.
Review 35:Room had thin walls. We could hear our neighbours who were not noisy. We had to wait a very long time before our tea and coffee were served at breakfast.
Review 36:We were off to a wedding evening do and had evening clothes with us on hangers there was no where to hang our clothes so we ended up hanging them on the doors. The extraction fan did not work in the bathroom which meant mirror was steamed up for sometime making it difficult to use. Decoration was very tired and windows were impossible to open without standing on the dressing table.
Review 37:Loved the location with wonderful views over Rutland Water. Staff at reception very good.
Review 38:The kettle didn't work in the room which we did inform them upon leaving. there were a few snobby guests who thought they were in Buckingham palace who got on my nerves a bit, but nothing the hotel could do about that lol overall a fantastic stay :)
Review 39:The area really is amazing. The hotel is in a perfect place. The rooms were basic but perfectly what they needed to be I.e clean and comfy. Staff were nice and friendly. Not a lot to complain about really.
Review 40:Fire alarm going off at 7am. Apparently if you shower with bathroom door open this can happen. It wasn't us!
Review 41:Range of facilities: pitch and put, bowls, pool.
Review 42:Our meal in the restaurant was shocking. Waited one and a half hours for four main courses, which, when they came were very disappointing. Very expensive but poor food.
Review 43:Spacious room which was very quiet and good bathroom. Good breakfast.
Review 44:Fan in bathroom not working correctly. No shower cap.
Review 45:Restaurant / breakfast. . Comfortable room but wouldn't have classified as a deluxe. Shower in room excellent.
Review 46:Room 616 bathroom looks out onto a walkway with a CCTV camera pointed in the bathroom direction. The bathroom windows are not frosted glass, just plain glass with venetian blinds that have the controls missing so I had to stand on a chair to try & close them. Residents could stand in the shower & be viewed from outside. The man in the suit watching over the restaurant was not a happy chap,it would not of hurt him to greet people instead of just ignoring them. We pay his wages!
Review 47:Great location. Majority of staff were pleasant & supplied dietary requirements. Good selection of food. Very happy with overall experience except my negative comment above. Hope to visit again sometime in the future.
Review 48:You cannot get a drink in the hotel lounge and the bar is open to leisure club members Restaurant is part of the leisure club and seemed a bit soulless A lot of walking about outside
Review 49:Comfortable room Nice grounds OK breakfast
Review 50:The softness of the bed was challenging.
Review 51:Excellent staff made sure our needs were met and we were happy. View from room onto the Water and proximity to it. Lots of parking near the room. Beautiful grounds. Fabulous room with a sofa each to stretch out on. Just what we needed to break up our long journey with a peaceful study of the birds on the water.
Review 52:There was no hot water in our room unfortunately.
Review 53:Likes the restaurant service and quality of food offered. Attentive and friendly staff at the restaurant and leisure centre. The location/scenery was outstanding.
Review 54:Car parking capacity is inadequate.I recommend that some parking bays at front of hotel are reserved for off loading and reloading
Review 55:The quality of the room and the view of the lake plus an excellent breakfast in an attractive restaurant.
Review 56:Room cleanliness on arrival was disappointing had to get beding replaced and had to clean bath. leisure centre/spa needed some management and control.
Review 57:Excellent location with good access to walking and cycling routes. Easy access to water sports centre.
Review 58:Having to go upstairs for tokens every time you go for a swim was tedious and inconvenient
Review 59:Leisure facilities offered a fun time with three teenage girls- pitch and putt combined with swimming and Jacuzzi was a perfect combination
Review 60:Quality of hairdressing not as good as it should be.
Review 61:Spa experience was excellent. Indian head massage, urban cleanse for men and reflexology were excellent. Floatation tank lovely. Breakfast service staff friendly.
Review 62:The bed was a bit uncomfortable for my liking purely because the mattress was "soft" compared to what I'm used to. The quality of the pillows could be better, but these are minor things really. My main issue was the noise created by other guests with them slamming their room doors and corridor entrance doors. Even after midnight!!! These were probably the wedding reception guests who clearly had no consideration for other guests.
Review 63:A peaceful location with a nice view over Rutland Water. Helpful and friendly staff. Good selection of foods at breakfast, the bar food was also very good.
Review 64:we did have a room upgrade with a view... but we had a big tree in our view, but wasn't the end of the world.
Review 65:we found the staff really helpful. breakfast really good value, also the bar menue..
Review 66:Room (in main building) and especially bathroom dimly lit with old fashioned low energy bulbs. Tired - in need of refurbishment. Dodgy plumbing gave rise to loud machine-gun-like noise in middle of night. TV programming limited - no subtitles available, which meant my wife who is deaf could not enjoy it. Open-air walk up steep flight of steps to restaurant and bar, although a lift (indirect) and alternative steep, longer route without steps available. WiFi very slow.
Review 67:Staff polite, breakfast good, location and grounds excellent.
Review 68:The view from our room was a yellow wall! The pool was nice but rather difficult to get to, through the building. The wifi was entirely random, we managed to connect for a few seconds at a time. The restaurant was rather noisy (kids etc) though the food was superb. Also, rather inefficient procedures for arrival, serving in the restaurant etc, though staff was friendly.
Review 69:Location, on a hill overlooking the lake. The food was superb.
Review 70:the duvet on the bed was too thick so too hot to sleep under but to be fair, it was exceptionally hot weather
Review 71:Fantastic views & in the right location for Rutland bird fair
Review 72:Never again, as hotel consists of several buildings on a very hilly site . Lots of steps and steep paths ,Not for the elderly or less mobile, steep path to breakfast room .Only time share properties get nice views of lake. No convenient parking. Rooms had very thin walls, hear everything including toilet noises. room small ok for 1 ,had very little daylight due to high breeze block wall outside window
Review 73:Handy to where i was going
Review 74:The dining and bar facilities were quite a walk, from our room, and up a number of steep steps. The walk was outside and not pleasant in the rain. The balcony view was rather blocked with large trees, and a shame no outdoor chairs on the balcony
Review 75:Room size good, food quite acceptable. Breakfasts excellent
Review 76:We had a room that had lovely large patio doors. It was hot while there and apart from opening the doors there was no other way of ventilating the room which got very hot. We didn't like to leave them open at night.
Review 77:Location and nice touches in the room, proper chairs to sit in.
Review 78:We were unaware that our double room would have a restricted view ie aa brick wall a little dissapointing when surrounded by magnificent vistas on the outdoor site
Review 79:The location was amazing
Review 80:Felt belittled in restaurant at breakfast when waitress went to take husbands plate away and he was not finished. She leant across and immediately crossed the knife and fork on the plate and said that if he was not finished then that is how he should have put the knife and fork, as if we did not know this - he was only having a rest from eating his meal. We also had to ask for a refill on the coffee where we noticed that the waiter attending other tables out of courtesy asked those quests, maybe our waitress needed to learn a thing or two from other staff. Needless to say we did enjoy our stay overall and will certainly be back.
Review 81:Relaxed atmosphere, beautiful scenery.
Review 82:If we had realised what you meant by a small room that was tiny and cramped we would have stayed elsewhere. Now we know why you wanted to charge another £33 for a proper one!
Review 83:Leisure centre
Review 84:would have liked some more seating around the grounds to sit & take in the views.
Review 85:friendly staff ,good food, pleasant hotel grounds, plenty to do within the hotel.
Review 86:The room was basic, you are put in a motel part of the hotel, even thou we upgraded, it was dated decor, double bed was two singles pushed together and not very comfy. The breakfast was its biggest let down, the choice was like going to a cheap B&B, my family felt let down, basic cereal, just a cheap buffet of hot food. Also it seems the hotel provides a timeshare option, and these guests take preference, when we asked to sit in the window, we were told it was set for evening meals, then timeshare guests came in and sat in the window!! I could go on, but think you get the picture!!
Review 87:The facilities were good & great location, the main hotel looked the part.
Review 88:Food was expensive and the bathroom needed a update. Otherwise perfect.
Review 89:We stayed for one night for a short break away the hotel is breathtaking when you pull up and I was so impressed with the location.the restaurant was nice but very overpriced. The staff were very helpful and professiona. The room was small but perfect for the time we were going to be in there for. However the bathroom was not so good my partner had to bend as he showered aa the roof was so low my partner is 6ft2 so not crazy tall.the shower was old and needed updating.
Review 90:We had a fantastic trip. It was a beautiful location with lots to do. We had problem with our original booking but the helpful staff upgraded our room so my son could have a camp bed.
Review 91:The bed had seen better days. The light in the hallway remained on all night, needing me to block out the light with pillows. The wasps were a nuisance on the bar patio.
Review 92:The location was great as we had cycled round Rutland water and wanted to relax afterwards
Review 93:Long trek 40 steep steps in the open from main building to restaurant. Eggs and bacon kept under hot lamps go hard and solid, they would keep better in a baine marie.
Review 94:Ideally situated for visiting surrounding attractions
Review 95:Inconsideration of different guests passing by the room EVERY night of our stay. Always being unnecessarily loud between 11.45 & 2.15 am. Usually those attending a specific function (e.g. courses or a pre-wedding do)
Review 96:Everything about the staff and the venue.
Review 97:Restaurant staff are enthusiastic but need training. They have a new manager who seemed highly capable so I expect this to change. The hotel doesn't have fine dining.
Review 98:The grounds are wonderful, beautifully maintained. The building is lovely. People were fantastic. An all around nice place to stay. We will be back. This looks and feels like a five star hotel.
Review 99:Great location and lots to do, both in the hotel leisure centre and surrounding area.
Review 100:Obviously not all the rooms have a view out to the lake, some are a bit shut in. However, that's to be expected. A little expensive for the quality of the room, but we booked late.
Review 101:9.30am cut off for breakfast was a bit early after a night at the bar but had a nice lay in instead
Review 102:The views of the gardens and Rutland water from the bed
Review 103:just a little exspensive for a single person £230 for to nights
Review 104:all the staff where very friendly and happy location was excellent and wedding facilities very good
Review 105:The room was very small, and the hotel is widely spread out in separate buildings
Review 106:The pool with changing accommodation refurbished since my previous visit a few years ago.
Review 107:room was a bit noisy at night. better coffee and bread would improve breakfast. kids not supervised in the pool even though this was required.
Review 108:lovely bathroom. helpful staff. lots to do. easy parking. fantastic location
Review 109:The room was fine for one night, but I would want a room with a better view for a longer stay.
Review 110:The location. Relaxed atmosphere. meeting members of the family that do not get together very often.
Review 111:My friend was staying in the honeymoon suite and when we called down to request something to be sent to the room we were told we had to do it ourselves. Was a little disappointing as we had spent money in the spa getting hair done and then it was ruined by having to walk to the bar in the rain.
Review 112:Everything else was brilliant just a shame the weather ruined a beautiful day.
Review 113:From the moment we checked in the staff were friendly and helpful. Location was beautiful, room was very clean, food was excellent and stay was value for money with all the free facilities.
Review 114:It was a little pricey, more than I am usually wiing to pay but it was convenient because I was at a wedding.
Review 115:The scenery was beautiful. My bedroom had double patio doors leading out onto a balcony and I could see the water from there. The grounds were really beautiful and I would have loved more time to explore the area and enjoy the facilities.
Review 116:Surprised no bottled water provided nor bath robes Expected in this quality of hotel
Review 117:Facilities, spa ok Restaurant had limited but more than adequate selection of dishes and the quality of food was excellent
Review 118:The location is lovely. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel and rooms were clean and breakfast was good. The bedroom décor however was dated and needed refreshing.
Review 119:The view out of the room window was a wall just 4 feet away and 10 feet high, so for £125 per night we had no view at all.
Review 120:Bathroom was excellent. Recreation facilities also.
Review 121:Mattress uncomfortable, pillows hard. I would expect a hotel of this category to have a better bed. (But I always pack a memory foam topper & feather pillow in case needed). Noisy neighbours on the last evening - not hotels fault. Think a wedding party had arrived.
Review 122:Excellent balcony room, lovely view. Excellent facilities, although we didn't use them.
Review 123:Although I stayed in a room with a lake view it was obvious that a lot of rooms had no view at all and many seemed to look out onto the brick retaining walls on the hillside. I recommend being careful to ensure that you book a room with a decent view!
Review 124:Superb old country house with views over Rutland Water and very well kept gardens. The hotel has woods surrounding it which makes it feel very grand. Most of the rooms are in modern annexes however but I had booked a superior room to make sure that I had a balcony and lake view
Review 125:The hotel was full and the staff could not cope at breakfast. We had to wait in a queue for about 20 minutes for the English breakfast, in the meantime our coffee was cold, we asked for replacements which did not arrive very quickly.
Review 126:The hotel is close to Rutland Water and is ideal for walking, sailing and cycling enthusiasts. We were attending a function at the hotel so it was very convenient to stay over night.
Review 127:There was no mention on the website, that I could find, to say that I had free access to the swimming pool, sauna, etc, if I was staying as a guest. It would have been good to know beforehand, but it didn't overly affect my stay.
Review 128:I really enjoyed my stay there.
Review 129:The receptionist seemed to great pleasure in announcing to everybodythat we had booked a "STANDARD" room and she usually offer nean upgrade for extra money but they didnt have any! We had gone for aVirgin spa day and had decided last minute to stay over even though welive less than an hour away. The room (521) was comfortable and withouta view. Not a problem. It was when we used the hot water there was theloudest buzzing noise. We thought this odd but livable with, that wasuntil we tried to get to sleep and every body was using hot water and wehad the buzzing. Then to be awoken at 5:30 to the buzzing again. I havesent these issues to the manager but with no reply. Pehaps he onlyreplys to non standard customers.
Review 130:The facilities and location was superb.
Review 131:Our room was outdated and faced a wall. There was a walkway between the room allowing people to walk right by the window however there was no net curtain so the main curtains had to be drawn when the room was occupied. I got the feeling the room allocated was the penalty for using booking.com
Review 132:Excellent location
Review 133:The beds wether you have a standard room or deluxe the quality of the bed should be high.
Review 134:The staff were polite and helpful and the cleanliness throughout.
Review 135:We stayed in a Small Double Room which was adequate for our short stay just to do some birdwatching in the area. We had a ground floor room which overlooked a small road. The only problem was that late night people coming back to their rooms were very noisy outside the rooms and also in the corridors. This was from midnight to 1:20am! We also had the same early morning from 6:50am when people were checking out and of course had rolling suitcases, again very noisy. The hotel grounds are excellent the views spectacular looking over Rutland Water. The hotel staff was pleasant but we found the restaurant staff could have been better trained. When ordering afternoon tea for three we got afternoon tea for two and had to wait for the third plate. We then had to ask for plates and cutlery and then napkins! This didn’t make the treat of afternoon tea seem so good. We waited 1.5 hours for our meal booking a table for 8pm and not getting seated until 9pm and served our starter at 9:30pm. No one really apologised and a young waiter told us they were busy. We did see this as the waiting staff was rushed off their feet. This should have been foreseen by the restaurant manager. The food was good when we finally got to eat.
Review 136:The location was perfect.
Review 137:Disappointing not to have any view from the lone window other than a wall. I would request this if I were to visit again
Review 138:Fantastic hotel, fantastic location
Review 139:No view after we thought all rooms had a view. Thought the floor manager at the breakfast was extremely rude to her staff who were doing a good job. Seemed to enjoy embarrassing them in front of customers. Poor show!
Review 140:Location
Review 141:Without doubt the bed needed to be replaced. It was extremely uncomfortable.
Review 142:The hotel was in a beautiful location. The breakfast was very good and the staff were very efficient.
Review 143:Could do with more than 1 member of staff at the bar, the clientele are more than likely to order coffee than beer which obviously takes longer to sort out
Review 144:Super staff, lovely room, great food
