Reviews for Auberge Du Bon Fermier

Review 1:The accommodation and food was superb. The staff were pleasant and so very helpful it was a great experience and others should take a leaf out of their book

Review 2:Breakfast fairly basic by contemporary standards.

Review 3:Stunning period property with a fantastic restaurant. Very close to the centre while remaining quiet.

Review 4:Although our booking confirmation listed an ensuite room with shower there wasn't one; only a bath with shower attachment that wasn't fixed to the wall which made showering v. difficult and impossible not to spray water everywhere! We were told that there wasn't another room with shower available and that we should have specifically requested a shower when booking.

Review 5:The hotel is a well preserved ancient building with beautiful decor to suit. Food was excellent as was service most of the time. We enjoyed both the fine dining restaurant and the more casual one where we watched the skilled chef cook over an open fire. Very rich, but delicious food. Sadly the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes was closed for renovation. Despite reading some disappointing reviews about Valenciennes city itself, we discovered numerous beautiful buildings and lots of green spaces. It must have been an amazing city in its heyday. Glad we visited for a few days.

Review 6:There's nothing not to like.

Review 7:This auberge delivers much. It's a beautiful old building which retains much of its historic charm situated in a great location for exploring Valenciennes. The staff are friendly and very helpful plus there's wonderful traditional meals to be enjoyed. Secure parking too.

Review 8:It was actually really delightful for us, but the attic rooms have slightly awkward narrow access and random steps in the floor, so may be worth avoiding for anyone with uncertain footing.

Review 9:Lovely building nicely cared for, good location for a stopover. Good food.

Review 10:The whole ambiance of the hotel was wonderful and all the staff were very friendly and made every effort to understand our schoolboy French. The food in the restaurant was a lovely mix of traditional and modern French cuisine.

Review 11:Lovely old quirky hotel, with attentive staff. Cooking over wood fire in the restaurant gave a lovely atmosphere. Food excellent. Staff accompanied us into nearby secure underground car-park.

Review 12:The streets were loud at night so it is hard to sleep. The room does not have a fan or Ac so the room was hot. If you open the windows you are attacked by Mosquitos.

Review 13:The cobblestone walkways, the old style room, location, how large the room and bathroom was.

Review 14:Very few breakfast choices (mostly a few children's cereal, milk yoghurt, fruit and coffee as I remember). Cooked food can be ordered but at extra cost per item. The room did not have a desk which meant working in the room was uncomfortable. Wifi was patchy.

Review 15:Location and old charm. Intriguing property.

Review 16:we normally have a lovely room (2nd visit this year. many times before) but this time we had an attic with dangerous slight changes in level, couldn't see thro window, no bedside table/light at one side so had to get out of bed to turn off lights near doir at other side of room. Bathroom horrible colours. VERY disappointed

Review 17:lovely placebut

Review 18:Nothing.

Review 19:A beautiful late medieval building with fine furnishings in spacious characterful rooms. The staff were courteous and good humoured, especially in the restaurant. A pleasure to be looked after by experts.

Review 20:We loved the restaurant- it was so atmospheric and the food was superb. The owner was really helpful and friendly and spoke excellent English. The rooms were beautiful too and we couldn't fault our stay!

Review 21:Took too long time to receive hot water. The carpet in the room was not fresh. No amuses bouches during the dinner.

Review 22:Romantic, historic atmosphere. Quite location. Traditional gourmet food. The valley parking was superbe.

Review 23:perhaps there should be a warning about the very narrow staircase to the second floor!

Review 24:Excellent meal in the evening with very attentive staff and someone on hand to translate an amazing menu.

Review 25:Nothing- enjoyed every minute of our stay!

Review 26:Unique rooms in traditional style, efforts made to retain traditional feel and not try to modernise. Excellent food and interesting restaurant with cooking being done on wood burning grill and spit roasting. Very helpful friendly staff. Well placed to visit the older part of Valenciennes, we stayed purely by chance on the day of the year where there is a huge market so plenty to see and do. If you like traditional, oak beam bedrooms, wonky floor and walls but comfort and good food can't see how you could beat this hotel.

Review 27:Parked my car overnight for me and they brought it back the following day with damage. Discussed with them before leaving and said they would call/mail me - they haven't. Emailed them twice with details - no response. Now in dispute with Credit Card company

Review 28:Hotel fine

Review 29:Nothing really . Bathrooms obviously seen better days but suited us fine for a one night stay

Review 30:Friendly staff, excellent restaurant and slightly quirky layout of hotel and features . We had room A with double and single bed which was nicely located at top of hotel .

Review 31:Absolutely nothing

Review 32:This hotel was an absolute delight situated in the centre of a not too inspiring town. The food was out of this world, the staff at all levels were excellent. Suffice it to say that we will be returning whenever we visit France.

Review 33:This is a fantastic coaching inn that has been creatively modernised in a high quality manner, keeping true to it's ancient theme. If you want a remarkable experience that is not Ibis or Novotel, this is for you.

Review 34:1) abysmal breakfast. possibly the worst we have ever had to pay for. hardly any cereal choice, could not even change a pin au chocolat for a bread roll as only one roll is given to each person. 2) Brasserie food was good but do not ever choose to order a panacotta as it is runny and we both had to leave ours.

Review 35:the interior the wooden structure the staircase the parking of your car by their staff at a reasonable cost the ambience brasserie or restaurant

Review 36:Food superb. Rooms unique. Staff very welcoming.

Review 37:A little overpriced for facilities and depending on its character and age to make up for it.

Review 38:Full of character

Review 39:The bed was a bit tough to sleep on.

Review 40:The restaurant in the hotel is amazing.

Review 41:Breakfast was not especially impressive, also considering the price.

Review 42:nothing

Review 43:been here at least 5 times. Excellent!

Review 44:Some of the bathing arrangements were best suited to contortionists.

Review 45:Quirky and packed full of character. Friendly, helpful staff.

Review 46:Rooms facing the road are a little noisy

Review 47:Lots of atmosphere, owners who care about their guests, they parked my car for us

Review 48:Wifi access poor.

Review 49:Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Meals excellent. Easy parking outside. Straightforward to find.

Review 50:Wifi didn't work all the time and when it was working it was slow, very slow.

Review 51:excellent attentive staff, good food

Review 52:None at all!!

Review 53:Being in an old historic building with lovely staff and very comfortbale and well appointed facilities.

Review 54:Wifi

Review 55:Location

Review 56:A haven in the midst of a bustling city. A trip back in time to a slower pace of life. Staff awesome, wanted for nothing. Will return soon.

Review 57:Nothing all good.

Review 58:Great breakfast buffet.

Review 59:Beautiful place. Great food. Friendly staff.

Review 60:Wood-timbered bedroom; superb food from the kitchen and open rotiserie, lovely service from the staff

Review 61:The restaurant!

Review 62:Everything Great hotel well managed Friendly proprietor

Review 63:TERRIBLE BED

Review 64:HELPFUL STAFF

Review 65:Everything

Review 66:food could be more refined perhaps tho still good

Review 67:old bath tub, poor breakfast

Review 68:Beautiful interior, good food, beautiful restaurant

Review 69:Breakfast expensive. Some noise from traffic outside.

Review 70:Lovely old building in excellent location. Large bedroom. Delightful dining room.

Review 71:Cosy atmosphere, lovely staff

Review 72:Parking problem

Review 73:Food, although the faisant was very dry

Review 74:No free parking

Review 75:No we fee access in rooms!

Review 76:central location

Review 77:Staff don't speak English.

Review 78:Very comfortable bedroom, beautiful place

Review 79:The bed was too hard

Review 80:The genuine nature of the hotel and it's history.

Review 81:The team. The architecture.

Review 82:The attic rooms are rather perilous to access - steep narrow flight of stairs with very uneven floors. The rooms on the main accommodation floor seemed rather more desirable.

Review 83:Great atmosphere in C17, town-centre buildings and friendly staff.

Review 84:We only had one night to stay there.

Review 85:The hotel was very unique and had a lot of character. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Excellent dinner in the restaurant.

Review 86:Second time we stayed, we were in a very noisy room - creaking floor from the room above.

Review 87:The building is very characterful. Wonderful food in the main restaurant. Staff very helpful re parking the car and retrieving it in the morning.

Review 88:11 euros for parking a motorbike in an empty garage. No air con, noise from room above and outside (very creaky floor boards). Extremely old fittings in bathroom, poor shower. Expensive breakfast.

Review 89:Interesting old building, kept very clean.

Review 90:We had a different room this time around, I preferred the first room that we stayed in the year before. This room was in the eaves of the old house, whilst quirky, did not have the same romantic feel. The toilet was carpeted with nylon cord which really cheapened it. On the whole the room was ok, but not worth the amount spent on it.

Review 91:Our room was very "pretty" but extraordinarily uncomfortable. The pillows and sheets were very tired and the shower was almost impossible to use. In addition, we were charged 11 Euro each for a lousy breakfast which was more or less the worst croissant in France. Have breakfast else where.

Review 92:This is a gorgeous old auberge in a delightful part of France. A perfect location for spectating at the Paris to Roubaix bike race. The restaurant is fabulous. Spectacular country style cuisine.

Review 93:The room (R) was absolutely clean and impressive. Although a bit pricey, I recommend the interesting menu at the atmospheric restaurant. Contrary to some of the user comments the staff was quite kind and proper.

Review 94:If you prefer conventional, non-personal accomodations - stay somewhere else. We arrived a bit too late (8 pm) to fully enjoy our stay here.

Review 95:Our stay was a fantastic adventure; beautiful old building with interesting interiors, wonderfully decorated rooms (room F in our case), enormous bathroom, very good dinner with attentive service.

Review 96:Lack of hot water; the hazard of a three inch deep sunken area in the middle of the room; a regional speciality dish - "rognons de veau", undercooked, and a very small portion (one potato and one slice of carrot) - expensive and very poor value for money.

Review 97:The location; the character and style of the hotel - an amazing conversion of a 17th Century inn; the friendliness of the staff

Review 98:Very weak wifi signal, some people (especially with lots of luggage or large suitcases) may find it difficult to access the higher rooms as the stairs are very narrow and no elevators.

Review 99:Fantastic character, loads of history, quirky rooms with period features makes you realise you're staying in the same building used for over 400 years as a hotel. The food is excellent and probably the best in the area. Hotel facilities are a bit limited but the ambience more than makes up for this

Review 100:Would like to have stayed longer

Review 101:The hotel had a fantastic atmosphere making best use of the old architecture. The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. The food and wine were excellent

Review 102:The staff is not trained for international customers (non-frenchspeakers)

Review 103:The atmospher and the grea service attitude of the staff. Indeed I willstay again with them and I will highly recommend it

Review 104:A lovely hotel full of character with an olde world charm, excellent food and lovely accommodation. Situated in the centre of lovely shopping yet still quiet enough for a restful stay. Staff very helpful and the whole of our stay was a delightful experience. Many thanks.

Review 105:Not much

Review 106:Amazing old building. Our bedroom was ancient, spacious and fascinating. Worth a visit just for the building, but no complaints of the other facilities. Car parking available in safe-seeming modern multistory nearby - they took us to it.

Review 107:Rooms not air-conditioned which can be problematic in the summer due to early morning traffic noise. The restaurant was disappointing, with regard to both quality and price.

Review 108:Good location. Lovely building with excellent rooms offering character and great comfort.

Review 109:Great atmosphere, quaint, charming and classically old world. Staff were charming and not over bearing or clinical as opposed to big brand hotels. We felt as comfortable as we would in our own home. Rooms were medieval idyllic yet were clean and fresh. Bathroom was fit for a queen. For a couple would be incredibly romantic. Food was gorgeous (try the pork!!)

Review 110:Beautifull hotel for this price . Everything is restored like in the16th century . The rooms are astonishing . I really slept in the middleages . The food is very good with a fire place aswell from the 16thcentury . We for sure come back .

Review 111:Nothing

Review 112:A lovely place must be visited

Review 113:Mosquitos, it was warm and humid so it is to be expectwd

Review 114:Friendly staff, very good value, good restaurant, quirky old style

Review 115:Great place

Review 116:Cobble stone floors.

Review 117:Very old World!

Review 118:Great city centre location but could be in an upmarket country farmhouse hotel when inside! Very good selection of food and refreshments.

Review 119:Staff were helpful in the extreme. Food was superb. Location & quirky building was an added bonus. A great hotel in a great town.

Review 120:Mosquitos!

Review 121:The staff, the service, the quirkyness of the hotel and the food
