Reviews for Stonecross Manor Hotel
Review 1:bedrooms and bathrooms are very shabby, dirt and mould on window frames. boiler plant room is next to some bedrooms on the first floor - very noisy - we had to change bedroom the first night.
Review 2:friendly staff and good food.
Review 3:Unfortunately, the a la carte menu in the room was not available over the week between Christmas and New Year - only a rather limited set menu. The hotel is in need of TLC - the bar and restaurant are rather dreary.
Review 4:Dog friendly and in a good position for exploring the lakes - also close enough to the M6 to make a stopover when travelling fairly long distances.
Review 5:Fantastic place to stay, only a short stroll to town. The staff are excellent, professional and very accommodating. I would highly recommend this hotel to my family and friends.
Review 6:The room stank of chips on arrival in which we opened the window as we must of been above the kitchen. There was dog poo on the bottom valance sheet of the bed.The hotel is very dated.
Review 7:I liked the location.
Review 8:Nothing
Review 9:It was a one night stop over to visit my mother in Barrow. Very handy to motorway and loved relaxing in the pool after the journey. hEavy traffic on the way made it too late to enjoy the meal we had intended having there breakfast was very good.
Review 10:Restaurant closed on arrival at 920 but we had been informed of that to be fair. Went for a curry
Review 11:The staff were overwhelmingly amazing and lovely Thank you
Review 12:Very welcoming and extremely comfy room and bed. Dogs were welcomed too and we have 2 quite large dogs. Evening meal in the bar and breakfast very good also. Altogether a pleasant overnight stay on our way to Scotland and I am sure we will be back for longer.
Review 13:TV in bedroom was tiny and a couple of things were looking a bit worn.
Review 14:Night porter was so helpful and they even started breakfast early for me because I had to travel early in the morning. Nice to have pool facilities too.
Review 15:The bathroom fan in next doors room could be heard each time the occupants switched it on.
Review 16:Food! A lovely surprise to discover that the food was SO good. Creative dinner, so flavourful, and lovely breakfasts.Good little Hotel in a great location.
Review 17:Hotel could do with a little t l c ,stair carpets have seen better days, and hotel needs a lick of paint all over.
Review 18:The food was excellent, the staff very friendly and helpful .
Review 19:Parts of the ceiling in the pool area had collapsed, the bedroom... Bearing in mind I had paid extra for a four poster room expecting a little luxury, was dirty and hadn't seen a paint brush in at least ten years. The bathroom grouting wasn't just black it was mouldy and paint was pealing from the walls and panels.
Review 20:Nothing... I have never previously put much stead in reviews as some opinions can vary quite dramatically, but in this case unfortunately the majority are true. The hotel was filthy, poorly maintained, with buckets in the bar area to catch leaking water from the ceiling.
Review 21:Poor breakfast - it wasn't fresh. Bathroom unkempt. Only one chair in double room. Hotel far too hot. Decor needs upgrading.
Review 22:location and pleasant surroundings
Review 23:The room we had was a bit small and cramped and could do with a refurbish, but this didn't detract from the holiday. Other rooms we saw were much better so our comment is very specific.
Review 24:The location was perfect for us, the staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and the swimming pool was also excellent.
Review 25:The receptionist was very helpful, assisting us with a map and directions for a wedding we were attending. The room was also made ready for our early arrival at our request which was perfect. Great hotel and a reasonable price. Would stay there again for a short break.
Review 26:The bed was softer than I am used to at home but that is a personal judgement Just used to a stiffer mattress. There was no lift for carrying heavy luggage upstairs but appreciate the building is old and structurally unable to incorporate one. Besides, the weight of my cases was mostly stock and not common for a normal guest.
Review 27:Staff were friendly, breakfast was very tasty and a welcome bar. Rooms were spacious and well furnished. Clean and tidy. My wife took the opportunity to explore the surrounding area and returned for the spa and pool. Definitely recommended.
Review 28:Staff we most helpful with directions; wait staff were warm and pleasant. Atmosphere very accepting and open. Made for a most enjoyable time. Met some lovely people while there.
Review 29:This smallish hotel had one of the best pool and spa facilities I've been too. Warm pool big enough to swim in, deeper in middle than sides, great idea, plus steam room and Jacuzzi.
Review 30:Easy to get to, warm welcome, great breakfast, good spot to get deeper into the lakes each day, good dogwalking down the road, swimming pool was in good condition with good facilities although didnt get time to use. Good pub just down the road; Romneys although the hotel bar was good too. All genuinely pet friendly too.
Review 31:It looks good on website but it is dismallbooked for two days only stayed one the manager actually told us it needs revamp pity it cost us money to find out never again.
Review 32:Although the booking confirmation from Booking.com did say that there was no meal offer included, the staff at the hotel did not warn us when they mentioned the time of breakfast that we would have to pay for it, nor how much it would cost. Hence, when I came to pay the bill, another £20 (for two) had been added. It's a very small thing, but "breakfast isn't included, but if you'd like it it will cost an extra £10 per head" is the courtesy and up-frontness I'd expect from a hotel. Felt ever so slightly shafted as a result, though it was probably an oversight.
Review 33:Very nice hotel, good value for money.
Review 34:Room wasn't ready on time, Arrived half hour earlier, but any urgency didn't take place till after check in time. Delayed our plans, belated apology next morning. more about there problems of time. For price charged, room furniture was tired. From position on the edge of lakes will probably get suffcient occupancy without addressing furniture and staff training
Review 35:Not to far out of twon centre and easy acces out of town avoiding the one way system
Review 36:Room was hot and stuffy. Bed had long ridge in which wasn't seen until bed time. Had stain on cover which wasn't good to see.most staff were nice but checking out on Tuesday morning the receptionist needs a lesson in customer service, not one smile or pleasantry from her.
Review 37:Room was nice and spacious.
Review 38:Uncomfortable bed-springs. Worn out towels and no shower gel or shampoo in showers beside the pool, and showers did not drain well. Our room was at the front of the hotel with a noisy road outside. We were above the front entrance so when windows were open, cigarette smoke came in. Bedroom walls were thin and we had a noisy neighbour who made loud phone calls from midnight to 2am.
Review 39:Nice welcome from friendly and helpful staff. Food very good. Lovely pool and jacuzzi.
Review 40:Room had pink chemical marks from treating a fungus which gave off an unpleasant odor
Review 41:Paid £490 for 6 nights which is well worth it. 1. quiet location ; 2. 15 minute drive to Windemere; 3. Hotel has good swimming facilities; 4. Up class pub 2min walk away who serve a roast carvery every day of the week.
Review 42:although the bedroom had a lovely style it was looking very tired, furniture all marked ,handles missing , window frame had badly flaked paintwork , bathroom had mould spores as did ceiling by the window, a toothbrush head was stuck in sink waste, a lot of dust on picture rails. we only stayed one night but if I was staying longer I would of been asking for a better room
Review 43:lovely style bedroom four poster bed etc
Review 44:Only minor negative was the decor in the room, slightly dated, but certainly didn't have any bearing on the quality of our stay.
Review 45:Food was excellent, Staff were very accomodating and friendly, Facilities were very good. Would highly recommend the hotel restaurant for an evening meal. The service was superb and the food was as good a meal as i've had in any hotel i've previously stayed in. We travelled with our Dog, he was welcomed and could go almost everywhere.
Review 46:this was a stop off to somewhere else but the greeting at reception set the tone , the room was lovely, it was old fashioned so a little work needed but it was clean, comfortable and pretty. the restaurant staff were very friendly but the service was excellent and generally the food was really good.we destressed very quickly and will return here over and over again and look forward to seeing it be restored to its full glory.
Review 47:It could to with a refurbishment
Review 48:Pleasant stay, good location, helpful staff, very close to Windermere . Ate a meal at the hotel restaurant which was lovely.
Review 49:There was no moment I did not enjoy
Review 50:The staff were all well mannered and never made you feel bad for wanting something extra, they seem to take pride in they're work which is brilliant
Review 51:The poor service and attitude of staff at breakfast
Review 52:the friendliness and helfulness of most staff, particularly at reception desk and in restaurant for evening meal
Review 53:Despite the fact that the booking terms stated that we could change our booking without charge up to the day before arrival, they took £50 immediately the booking was made. They also took a random sum of money (nearly £100) from our credit card during the first night of our stay. Drinks are expensive - £10.80 for 2 glasses of Port.
Review 54:We last stayed at Stonecross Manor when my wife underwent a cancer operation at the Westmorland Hotel in Kendal. We were looked after wonderfully well, so when my consultant suggested I find a spa hotel for a relaxing break following my heart by-pass operation we booked the Stonecross. We were unexpectedly given a room with a very comfortable 4-poster bed. We used the excellent spa facilities and the meals were as good as we remembered, especially as they allow you to choose from the day and regular menus at very reasonable prices.
Review 55:Bedroom at the front of hotel which faced a very busy road, whenrequested quiet room. Not good value, though it's more expensive inthis location.
Review 56:Within walking distance of Kendal town
Review 57:The bed creaked all night, and was very uncomfortable. The staff needed more training as they were unprofessional at times.
Review 58:The room was spacious. The receptionist was very happy to pop up and make the shower work. We appreciated the reduction in room cost due to the dreadful nights sleep.
Review 59:Wifi very slow. Rooms were quite small and walls a bit thin so sound carried, but not a big issue for us.
Review 60:Staff really helpful and friendly. Excellent breakfast. Great location. Rooms nice and clean and comfortable.
Review 61:The wifi was below standard , bed very uncomfortable and the place was over priced for the quality of furnishings . They need replacing . The carpets are badly worn .
Review 62:It's in a great location , with a bit of updating with the furnishing being replacied and correct pricing this place would be outstanding .
Review 63:Pillows rather soft need to be a bit firmer. Had problem with sink running away But it was resolved ok.
Review 64:Staff really friendly and helpful made the stay more special. All Food really great Dinner & Breakfast.
Review 65:Rooms are dated, cobwebs and bathroom needs some tlc. Rooms airless. Needs air in hall way and room was clutted with too much furniture.
Review 66:The staffs friendliness was brilliant. They lent us a fan for our room as it was hot and airless.
Review 67:we got the wine at the end of out dinner.
Review 68:The hotel lies at the right spot for a stay of one night. We came from the north and were on our way back home.
Review 69:Disappointing not to have a shower in a King Size Four Poster bedroom - a large spa bath is not really compensation without the basics! The Wi-Fi is slow and could do with a boost. Overall a bit on the expensive side for what was provided.
Review 70:Comfortable beds and excellent breakfast.
Review 71:It was massively overpriced. The bedroom furniture was very dated as was the decor and so was the bathroom grout. Although it was clean i do think it should be priced at around £80 not £115
Review 72:It had everything we needed for an over night stay and the receptionist was very informative when we booked in. The breakfast was lovely
Review 73:The hotel is in desperate need of refurbishment, everywhere looks tired - threadbare carpets, warped and swollen bath panels, missing chunks of flooring in bathroom. The absolute unforgivable thing though in my opinion is how uncomfortable the beds and pillows are - it's an absolute sin for an hotel to continue to use such old bedding. I'm left feeling ripped off for this reason as I've slept better in hostels I've paid £15 for - whereas this hotel offered an uncomfortable, sleepless night for £140!
Review 74:Really trying to find something... the water pressure was good
Review 75:Shabby, run down room - handles missing off drawers, furniture past its best. Waiters/waitresses inexperienced
Review 76:Good food, pleasant reception staff.
Review 77:Just a one night stay,Friendly & helpful staff and great breakfast. Rooms could do with a refurb of furniture but doesn't effect stay in anyway.
Review 78:Was not a problem but inside wardrobe was dusty and a couple of handlesmissing off furniture. Let the overall room down. Otherwise lovely
Review 79:Lovely welcome. Staff were very helpful.
Review 80:Property has seen better days and felt neglected. Decor in very poor state, damaged and water-stained. Cleaning only superficial. Bathroom well below par and towels stained.
Review 81:Very comfortable four-poster bed.
Review 82:It got from bad to worse, the greeting was perfect and the hospitality extended by the receptionist was absolutely perfect. Sadly from here on in I have nothing good to say.
Review 83:The greeting was perfect.
Review 84:It took 2 hours to get the evening meal which consisted of 2 courses. There were very few people in the restaurant so I don't know why it took so long.
Review 85:We stayed in two different rooms and both beds were incredibly squeaky and uncomfortable
Review 86:It's walking distance to town but not right in the centre. Nothing was too much trouble.
Review 87:The bed was incredibly creaky and uncomfortable especially as we had paid for a four poster. It was noisy and the breakfast was good until the cremated toast came out. We were glad we hadn't stayed for dinner as the restaurant area was very average. Looked like it was going to be a very classy establishment from the outside and although pleasant enough, didn't quite live up to expectations.
Review 88:The pool and spa. It was so clean, well kept and relaxing. The receptionist was excellent and the room was clean and well kept.
Review 89:The bedroom was very dated. The bathroom had screws missing from oneside of the glass shelves which meant that you could nothing on them. The edging round the outside ofthe bath was missing.
Review 90:Staff, food especially breakfast. Good location for a relaxing weekend.
Review 91:A bit of a walk in to town, but otherwise not a bad location.
Review 92:Friendly staff, good service and plenty of choice for breakfast, which was well presented and cooked.
Review 93:Its a shame that I have to write this but when we arrived, the member of staff behind the desk was helpful but was a bit sturn, spoke down the to us both. Our room was small but cute, cluttered with extra unwanted furniture which just filled any available space up. Bath was gritty, tiles broken, and the smell of cigarette smoke lingered in the corridor and our room. We only paid £65 for the the night which was half the original price, I would pay more than that.
Review 94:What a beautiful building!!
Review 95:The room was very run down. The bed was falling apart, it was very creaky! There were broken tiles in the bathroom and the towel rail had 2 sharp screws sticking out of it.
Review 96:We had lunch and breakfast at the hotel and it was gorgeous! The pool is lovely, very warm and it is all brand new. Reception staff were very helpful.
Review 97:The room was a bit noisy during normal hours as it was over the kitchen next to an extractor fan and an access door to the roof and laundry. Overnight after 11 pm there was no problem.
Review 98:The staff were excellent, friendly, welcoming and helpful.
Review 99:Had no bad experiences.
Review 100:Staff were very friendly and service very good. Hotel has a laid back and relaxed atmosphere. The food was excellent. The fact the hotel had a pool played a part in drawing us to the hotel, that if we had the inclination and time as we only stayed one night we would have used it. I also liked that dogs were allowed. If it had been convenient for us we would have brought ours and would certainly consider it in future.
Review 101:The faded grandeor added to the intimate charm . We booked a king sized room and were upgraded to a suite - well it was fantastic , huge room and four poster bed, one of the nicest hotels we stayed in and the hotel food was very good value and excellent quality , the breakfast to die for !
Review 102:We stayed in room 215. The four poster bed was so unconfy and squeeky even when it was just sat on. Both nights we didnt sleep well because of every time either of us moved in the bed it was so squeeky and loud. The pool are is do modern and lovely, i think the rooms need a makeover to match such a lovely pool area. And maybe have a doggy day care service in the morning at breakfast becahse alot of the dogs were crying in the room when their owners left them including ours.
Review 103:Breakfast was amazing. Staff were lovely. Pool area lovely and modern
Review 104:The bed was way to soft for us and at lunch I wasn't asked how I liked my steak resulting a steak you could use for your shoes.
Review 105:The hotel was clean and well located with a smashing pool and spa . the staff were very helpfull
Review 106:Only booking the one night
Review 107:The accomodation was of very good standard . The staff at reception where very friendly and had agood knowledge of the area as to walk our dog ( who was made welcoome and loved her stay also ) . Also as was the bar and breakfast staf . Very enjoyable and would recomend .
Review 108:My partner is 5'10.5" and 14 stone. He found the bed too small (double) with a distinct lack of duvet (also double).
Review 109:We loved the spa. It is small but perfectly formed. We went in around 8pm and had the place to ourselves.
Review 110:I did not like the menu, there was not much of a selection. Also the bed was very soft and you rolled into the middle.
Review 111:The swimming pool and Jacuzzi were the highlight of the hotel.
Review 112:Could do with dusting the room a little more.
Review 113:We had a great stay, staff very friendly and helpful. The food was really good , compliments to the chef. Lovely, warm room. Will be staying here again.
Review 114:Hotel ran out off towels at spa. No soap, body wash in showers at spa. Paid extra for a room with four poster bed, and the room was tiny. Changed room to none four poster bed, yet paid additional for the benefit and was not reimbursed the difference. Hotel staff advised walk into town about 20 mins, (maybe running/cycling)! Took appox 40 mins walking.
Review 115:Free parking, accessibility.
Review 116:Only negative experience was the receptionist on departure. Very unhelpful and when i reported my hairdryer was faulty (and dangerous) she became defensive rather than solution orientated. She was by far the exception though..
Review 117:Receptionist on evening of check in was very helpful and made us feel welcome. Room was homely. Pool was really nice and kept very clean. Breakfast staff again helpful and welcoming.
Review 118:Excellent food but unable to take our time eating as the plates had not been heated so the food went cold very quickly.
Review 119:Receptionist was very friendly and helpful. The bar and resteraunt were very comfortable and had an excellent choice of food which was very well made.
Review 120:The bedrooms were a little outdated but clean.
Review 121:Last minute spa break turned out better than imagined, spa facilities are very clean and well looked after. Close to Kendal town centre and all amenities.
Review 122:Dated decor and furniture a bit shabby (bedroom cupboards missing handles etc.).
Review 123:Terrific relaxing spa pool, friendly helpful staff, lovely food in the restaurant, a comfy bed and an all round happy atmosphere - we would definitely stay here again.
Review 124:Fixtures and fittings are becoming a little dated. Shower dripped / ran like a tap all night. Mould in top of shower. Parts of bedroom ceiling so low you hit your head.
Review 125:The fact that the hotel had one room remaining on a winters night. Booking online saved us 40 pounds on the normal price. Breakfast was excellent.
Review 126:I turned on a lamp in the room (with nothing but a charger plugged in) and blew the fuse in the room. Woman at reception said that has been happening a lot lately. The hotel is slightly dated but nice. Breakfast was great, we had no problems, but we did watch another table have significant issues getting breakfast. The price seemed a little high for the lack of anything. The town was dead and there was not much to do. Price just seemed high for off season.
Review 127:staff was amazing and very friendly and the location was a short walk away from town
Review 128:on arrival we were shocked to find the hotel was not in the nicest of areas, not like the photographs provided and in desperate need of some tlc. The room rate was extortionate for what was provided, bathroom dirty and damp, one miniature bar of soap provided and one bottle of shampoo. Miniscule tv and horrifically noisy bed! Room was not what I requested or paid for. Dinner was an mixed bag of exceptionally good starters and very poor mains (if you can't get steak right you really shouldn't be a chef) in an incredibly dated dinning room.
Review 129:staff were the best thing about the place
Review 130:Having to move rooms not long after check-in as there was no hairdryer in the 1st room and we were moverd to a room with a wall mounted hairdryer.
Review 131:Relaxing atmosphere, pool
Review 132:This is a place built of stone; it has a different feel to one made of brick, you sleep better in it. The food is good , the staff are friendly courteous and efficient. You can walk into town, there is a bus service a 100 yards down the hill; it is easy to access by train and taxi or from the by pass by car. It is very good.
Review 133:Bar shuts at 10:30 without telling the guests! Although receptionist allowed us to order a drink to take to our room. Top floor accommodation, a bit noisy first thing with the sound of water running through the pipes, luckily I wasnt intending on a lie in!
Review 134:Friendly hotel staff, room accommodates pets, probably decor in need of an update but overall clean and comfortable.
Review 135:There was a Christmas party going on beneath my bedroom which was very noisy until 12.00 which was too disruptive. The food in the resteraunt was poor and I complained to two different staff members who offered nothing in response! My room was a little in need of refurbishment, bathroom a bit shabby.
Review 136:The breakfast was good.
Review 137:As other reviews have said, some of the rooms are now in need of a quick freshen up and that would bring the score up to excellent as everything else is spot on. This need of an update meant that in terms of value for money it was a little low compared to the décor standards that are seen in other hotels which is a shame as at the moment this is impacting the scores of what is a lovely hotel. I would stay there again.
Review 138:Staff were excellent. Very welcoming and lots of good advice about local area. Overall the facilities, including breakfast, were very good.
