Reviews for Glengarry Castle Hotel

Review 1:Although food was good, I felt the menu was overpriced as a whole. Our bedroom, whilst comfortable, a little dated and bathroom could do with a refurb.

Review 2:Beautiful location and friendly, helpful staff. Good food.

Review 3:The room was OK, but not of the highest caliber. Getting to the room was like walking through a maze.

Review 4:This hotel had a great dining hall and the meals were first rate. Service was also first rate. The grounds were beautiful and the living room most inviting.

Review 5:The bed was very hard & the pillows very thin but this seems to be the normal with pillows in the UK.

Review 6:Loved the beautiful gardens & all staff are so friendly & helpful.

Review 7:The dining room/cooking seems a bit dated and overly formal

Review 8:Wonderful old world style...comfortable room, great public space...easily could have spent another day or two relaxing

Review 9:No lift. Twin room beds a bit small (would have preferred a double but we had a last minute booking)

Review 10:Great staff, lovely location, beautiful grounds & comfortable lounges

Review 11:This is a really lovely hotel for a relaxing break or as a base to visit the glorious countryside around. The staff are friendly and the food is excellent and good value. Sit and taste the fine selection of whisky by the open fire in the lovely reception rooms.

Review 12:Welcoming and helpful staff. Picturesque and ideal location. Superb grounds and beautiful views. Comfortable and visually appealing furniture. Delicious food and attentive service. The entire setting evokes a sense of serenity and peace.

Review 13:The bed is a little thin/springy. The bathroom is a little dated, although in an interesting way.

Review 14:The breakfast is good and the location of the hotel is nice - secluded and right on the lake. The room is a good size and overall the house and surrounding grounds have a historic feel. Hike to the castle!

Review 15:Quilts are stained, staff seem a little cranky

Review 16:Dinner and breakfast were fabulous. Lots of lovely things here, just needs a revamp, new linen, showers are terrible

Review 17:Couldn't stay longer

Review 18:Fabulous location, felt very much like the "Laird" given the attentiveness of the staff and the use of the main rooms in the house. Dining is especially enjoyable in this establishment.

Review 19:Nothing about the hotel we didn't like, it's very special.

Review 20:Set in a very tranquil setting, this hotel was a great place to stay for a few nights after driving for days through the west coast and highlands of Scotland

Review 21:We had a really tiny room, right above the kitchen it seemed.

Review 22:The location was just gorgeous. It really felt like we were living on luxurious castle grounds.

Review 23:The property is about 3-5 miles from any other restaurants. So if you wished to explore other restaurants in the area one would need a car. The second night that I had dinner there the pheasant was very dry. The other dinner was good.

Review 24:The property was wonderful and located on Loch Oich which is about 3-5 miles from the southern most end of Loch Ness and Fort Augustus. The staff were fabulous. Jane, Janetta and Donald were so helpful and friendly one felt like you were staying with family. The room had two twin beds and were pretty comfortable. We were in room 216 which had a HUGE, wonderful tub in it. The included breakfast was very good, amble and filling. We had Afternoon Tea one afternoon with homemade short bread. The structure and grounds were just lovely and a very short walk down to the Loch where one could fish for your own supper, rent a small boat or walk about the ample grounds. For me, the standout of our stay there was the staff. They were just wonderful to us. Dinners were generally very good. It was a very quiet, peaceful setting in the country side. Scotland is one of the prettiest countries I have visited. So many "picture perfect" opportunities it is overwhelming. Everywhere one looks there are beautiful small farms and homesteads. I was shocked at how much "green space" there is in Scotland. Pastural setting with few trees.

Review 25:Location a bit isolated from other tourist spots. Room was a bit tight for opening our luggage. Restaurant service was slow on a couple of occasions.

Review 26:Beautiful facility and location. Breakfast was excellent, staff was friendly and helpful.

Review 27:There was no espresso, we could not enter the dinning room before the gong, up stairs down stairs mentality. Breakfast and dinner overdown. When we came back from the breakfast, a boy (approx. 12 years old) was already cleaning the room.

Review 28:The environment, the garden, the rooms, the old fashion style of the building.

Review 29:The florescent lighting in the reception area was a bit harsh and detracted from the overall ambiance.

Review 30:Beautiful location and setting! Staff was very helpful and friendly. Dinner and breakfast in the restaurant was top rate. Loved having a drink before dinner in the lounge and looking out at the lake.

Review 31:Gardens untidy but wonderful location. Interior decor lovely and in keeping with a castle.

Review 32:Staff very efficient especially in dining room. Service and quality of food a very high standard

Review 33:the plug for the electic kettle is in the wrong place !!!

Review 34:One of these lovely hotels which is almost perfect ! Which is what you expect for the price !

Review 35:Breakfast. Really disappointed in the poor quality of the bacon and sausages. Little touches like this really matter to a foodie. I know it will squeeze your margins but I expected top quality breakfast.

Review 36:Location and scenery perfect - lived up to Highland idyll

Review 37:What an amazing place, we wanted to stay a night in a castle and picked Glengarry, it's a beautiful castle set in a beautiful location, the river, the forest and the ruins of Invergarry castle were fantastic. Our room was excellent, breakfast was delicious, we loved it! One of the staff, a lady working in the evening was particularly nice!

Review 38:Nothing negative to say. It's brilliant!

Review 39:This olde world hotel could not be in a better setting. It's spectacular in every way. The hotel is old school with charm and romance from a different era. Staff were great. Even has a ruined castle in the garden !

Review 40:The grounds are gorgeous and having historic ruins on site make it even more special. Our room was super nice. We met the owner the next morning and she showed us a Room 5 with the best view. We'll have to book that one the next time!

Review 41:Quality of food preparation for dinner on Thursday, 2nd July 2015 was primitive comparable to school lunches; very expensive for what it was and the soup and main course proved inedible; cheese for dessert was very good. No attempt made to provide an alternative to the food sent back. Heating and hot water/pressure in our room on top floor did not work, however management did provide alternative electric heating on request in this top floor small overpriced room (four poster bed installed to attempt to justify cost). Delightful grounds, lawns, plants poorly maintained.

Review 42:Location delightful. Hospitality professional and sincere. Cleanliness of room and common parts as it should be. Breakfast quality very good, but no freshly squeezed grapefruit juice.

Review 43:Maid service needs to improve. Buckets not emptied. Dirty glasses left. Bedding not changed daily.

Review 44:Friendly and helpful staff. Lovely old house in great location and setting. Very comfortable. Good food.

Review 45:Our room was meant to be a superior room with 4 poster bed. it was 3 flight of stairs ,the last flight quite steep to carry luggage up. No one to help with luggage Our room was small dark and dingy. the bedding was a bed spread and blanket that obviously does not get cleaned from one guest to another. the heating was inadequate. The reception area was creepy and you had to pay 1 pound for a zerox copy of map of the grounds and also for a 1 page leaflet of things to do. The staff at breakfast had obviously not been trained properly in taking orders and serving.

Review 46:The local pub for meals

Review 47:My only complaint is that I thought it was actually a castle (from the name), but it's a grand old building all the same. The actual castle is a beautiful, dramatic ruin a few hundred yards away.

Review 48:Very friendly inn keepers. Good food, beautiful surroundings and lovely old interior.

Review 49:This accomodation really fulfilled our expectations because we wanted to get in touch with this very special castle-atmosphere after having done half of our adventure in Scotland. The staff was very friendly and helpful, even when we decided to leave for a trip to Iona very early in the morning. Fine opportunities for relaxation in the library or in the surrounding nature. Beautiful and very comfortable room.

Review 50:Meal was a bit expensive in comparison to comparable Scottish restaurants, but quite delicious. If you are looking for new and modern facilities you might be disappointed. We enjoyed the period feel however.

Review 51:Beautiful gardens in full bloom, great dinner, huge room, anteroom and bathroom. Semi secluded location. Friendly staff.

Review 52:Nothing.

Review 53:Lovely setting, with Loch Oich at the bottom of the garden. Nice lounge and library to sit in. We upgraded our room, well worth doing so, as we could sit in the room and look over the Loch. Our first room was two floors up and cramped. My partner had damaged his knee and couldn't climb the stairs to the top floor, and an upgrade meant he could rest in comfort in the room. The staff were very kind and considerate to him.

Review 54:Bedroom and breakfast were both great. We had a huge room, nicely furnished, with a very good view in three directions. Nice bathroom with a shower and separate tub!

Review 55:Toilet in ensure didn't flush very well and took a very long time to fill up plus was quite noisy. Although not a huge problem the wifi that is advertised widely was hit and miss.

Review 56:the staff were wonderful and very accommodating. The location is brilliant and we felt throughly relaxed each evening we settled down for pre dinner drinks in the lounge or library. The bed was so comfortable and provided a restful sleep.

Review 57:We loved the house, appreciated the staff and enjoyed the views from our bedroom. The food was excellent. There are some good walks and I found many, lovely wild flowers.

Review 58:Very nice hotel at a beautiful lake, surrounded by a forest and ruins of an ancient castle. We had a great and very spacious room with the lake view. Unforgettable!

Review 59:The decoration of the hotel is a bit oldfashioned and tired looking, but everything else makes up for it.

Review 60:Location and staff friendliness are very good. And the afternoon tea is to die for.

Review 61:I made a late booking and thus had a good rate. When I saw the price list in the hotel I think it was too expensive for what it was

Review 62:The people are real nice and the location is really amazing and the dinner was real good

Review 63:Although the service was good, the quality of cooking was below my expectation. Rather than taking the fixed dinner menu, one is better off to go for food around the corner to Invergarry Hotel (a country inn) for a la carte choice and better value.

Review 64:the location, access to the nature (walks), old style mansion, fireplace and board games with tea and whiskey, good wifi connection

Review 65:evening menus were a little disappointing with dishes with unusual ingredient combinations that did not all work well.

Review 66:views and hotel accommodation were very good

Review 67:Oh dear, the net curtains at the front !!! Followed by the dour welcome and cluttered reception !! All sort of 1950's quaint including the gong announcing dinner!! Proper bar would be good !

Review 68:Good setting, comfortable room with excellent food and great service in the dining room. Good parking space, great grounds for walking and access to the loch.Comfortable lounge and library with log fires and dog friendly. A quiet and genteel place,we enjoyed our stay despite the following remarks !

Review 69:At breakfast every item has to be ordered separately - a buffet at least for porridge, cereals, juice etc. would be nice. Just look at how it's done in your average Highland B&B - that would work much better. Apart from that, everything was just perfect!

Review 70:Hotel situated in stunningly beautiful surroundings on the shores of Loch Oich; large room and bathroom; lovely historic decor; excellent restaurant (they do a four-course set dinner menu but reception helpfully mentioned that you could have less than 4 courses, which was perfect for us and saved us a trip somewhere else - and it was well worth it) - will definitely come back and recommend to others!

Review 71:The bed was fine, but not as comfortable as at other places of similar pricing.

Review 72:We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Glengarry Castle. The grounds were beautiful, the castle ruins fun to see, and the accommodations were very good. The staff was friendly and very helpful.

Review 73:May be a piano in the librarey, The parking area in front of the castle may be improved.

Review 74:Excellent Location. Excellent Value for money. Nice castle feeling. Castle grounds are excellent. Nice big librarey and lounches. Breakfast and Dinner is also excellent.

Review 75:Not a complaint. Just a word of advice. Check the menu before you decide to book an evening meal. Whilst it was not particularly to our tastes, it was a nice experience (very elegant dining room) and well cooked/presented. I would have preferred steak and chips though.

Review 76:We picked this hotel for a one night stay whilst on a short tour of Scotland. The price was comparable with most of the other local hotels (near loch ness) so we booked after a quick check of the recent reviews. From the ruined castle you pass on the private drive, to the huge oak paneled entrance hall, we realised we hadn't booked a 'run of the mill' hotel. Lovely room. Friendly staff. Beautiful building!

Review 77:Location and surrounding area. Staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is gorgeous... like stepping back in time 100 years.

Review 78:Not having longer to stay.

Review 79:From entering the car park to leaving 4 days later everything was quality. The staff, rooms, meals, grounds and even the other guests were lovely. Best place I've ever stayed and we'll definitely be returning.

Review 80:Leaving.

Review 81:Welcoming log fire at reception. Sitting by the picture window with a single malt, watching the mist slide across the hills behind the loch. Friendly, attentive staff - good food. Views from the four-poster bedroom.

Review 82:Being an old building we had to climb 2 flights of stairs .

Review 83:Old building with the comfort of a modern building. Felt like a home especially the real open fires.

Review 84:The historic building lacks an elevator but it was difficult to see how one could be installed without damaging the structure and beautifully proportioned interior of the building.

Review 85:The service was first class and the historic building had been upgraded to modern requirements in a sympathetic manner. The high quality of everything was not reflected in the cost of our stay and the value for money was exceptional.

Review 86:Dining room staff were weak Some food was over-cooked Breakfast was least good of a week's trip through Scotland

Review 87:Location Great front-of-house staff Comfortable room Most of the food

Review 88:Seems all rooms in Great Britain are a bit dusty. Being asthmatic this is always an issue. Be great if they could vacuum every day.

Review 89:The staff were excellent as was the restaurant. The room looked over the trees and was great to stay in.

Review 90:Everything - building, grounds, views, fabulous bathroom (Rm 16), wonderful furnishings, food out of this world, and such efficient and welcoming staff. Most impressive was the care we observed being given by the staff to an elderly gentleman with dementia - not often seen in chain hotels! The whole overnight experience was a real treat for us - the understated elegance and old- fashioned atmosphere was much appreciated. I never sleep well, but this was better than usual!

Review 91:We stayed at the Glengarry Castle on our honeymoon in 1964 and returned 50 years later for our Golden Wedding. Everything about this hotel is excellent from the setting on Loch Oich to the meals abd service.

Review 92:Not the most comfortable bed.

Review 93:Staff very accommodating when we arrived late. Nice breakfast served very efficiently. Nice "country house" feel!

Review 94:The room allotted to us is small and we could hardly sleep because it was so hot until the early hours when it got cooler.

Review 95:The hotel as a whole is great and the beauty of it's surroundings is beyond words, simply fantastic.

Review 96:Restaurant menu disappointed. Presented well but limited choices and vegetables plain and unimaginative. Felt a bit rushed. Given overall quality of hotel, we felt this aspect let them down a bit

Review 97:Location. Beautiful room (4 poster). Friendly staff.

Review 98:None

Review 99:The location was magnificent. There are awesome nature walks, a huge lake, mountains, farms, monuments, and the ruins of an old castle right on site. The staff was wonderful and the castle has a nice library to boot.

Review 100:Arrived earlier than the recommended booking-in time in the afternoon but were immediately booked in without any issues. Room was very nice and standard was excellent. Had a walk before dinner along the loch and riverside, everything well looked after. Dining room was very well presented, staff attentive and courteous and dinner was excellent; as was breakfast the next morning. Overall, beautifully kept hotel and to be highly recommended.

Review 101:Our accommodation was great, but some of the guest said their room didn't have an in room en-suite. If you think this could be an issue check when you book.

Review 102:Great location, accommodation was just superb, the staff are very friendly. You just have to love with this place.

Review 103:There was no gym [but a huge garden which you could exercise in]

Review 104:Lovely surroundings , quiet and relaxing place to stay, evening meal was excellent if you want to pay a little extra

Review 105:nothing

Review 106:wonderful service, comfort, food top quality ingrediants, and beautifully cooked, I was made to feel very special. The grounds are spectacular, and it all in easy reach of Fort William, and Inverness. A truly great country house hotel.

Review 107:All good

Review 108:Staff were excellent and made our stay very enjoyable. Our room was fantastic. We enjoyed the grounds the hotel was set in and also the walking track to the nearby town.

Review 109:Having to be served table service for cereal for breakfast

Review 110:Fantastic location. Beautiful rooms. Very comfortable and all amenities of a high standard.food was superb with excellent service

Review 111:Dining room tended to be too warm but a minor quibble for such a fantastic stay.

Review 112:Great food, beautiful room and public rooms and grounds. Elegant but very comfortable at the same time. Room was very well equipped. Front desk staff were very very nice and helpful.

Review 113:Nothing
