Reviews for The Horseshoe Inn

Review 1:We were on a romantic weekend break, we had to wait outside in the cold for over an hour to check in even though we had arranged a specific check in time. When we finally got in, the bar lady moaned about having to work for the first 10 mins before getting us sorted, very poor service. When we asked what time they were doing food the bar lady offered to order in a kebab! We were horrified! When we went down for breakfast there were no clean cups for coffee, all of them were in the sink alongside dishes that had clearly not been washed in days. My *clean* towel had a massive clump of hair on it even though it was folded neatly on the bed.

Review 2:The room was nice and warm.

Review 3:No en suite and no parking (but knew this when booking) so not a problem. Is a few miles outside Shepton Mallet town centre but also not a problem.

Review 4:The friendliest staff I've ever met. The pub doesn't do food but they let us order take away and eat in the bar. One of the bar staff then drove us to The Bath and West Showground. Cheap booze too! Room clean and all mod cons. Cheap and cheerful stay. Perfect for one night.

Review 5:The staff were very friendly and accommodating went out of there way to make us feel welcome if we need to go again next year this will be the first place we will try to book

Review 6:Mould on the walls. Access through the bar. Dingy and dark pub. Unaware landlord. OK, it's a Pub, but the smell of beer was everywhere!

Review 7:seemed like clean bedding and towels.

Review 8:Had make myself breakfast because there was no staff around in the morning. Free WIFI didn't operate in our room/kitchen area - best signal in the pub only. I seriously think this place is haunted!

Review 9:Bed was comfy and room was clean. Friendly staff.

Review 10:Very run down. Lacking character and in desperate need of updating. I was surprised it's on booking.com as your accommodation is usually dependable.

Review 11:I didn't trust key pad entry into premises or availability of staff if it didn't work. A bit of loud noise in the early hours of the morning from the bar. Go figure.

Review 12:The bed was good. Clean spacious bathroom. Good wifi with no password. Friendly staff, but somewhat disorganised approach.

Review 13:The room and ensuite hadn't been cleaned for some time - lots of evidence of previous occupants and very sticky tops to drawers and furniture. The self serve breakfast area was also a bit on the grubby side. This accomodation and breakfast was on a par with a very basic youth hostel but a much inflated price at £40 per person per night.

Review 14:The location and friendliness of the bar.

Review 15:Travellers be wary - if you stay in a pub on a weekend expect lots andlots of noise! We had to endure Karaoke from 9 pm to 12 midnight directly below our room. Together with continual traffic from A371 (rooms front onto this busy road), noisy punters leaving the pub and an insomniac landlord banging and crashing about downstairs into the small hours, a good nights sleep is the last thing on offer at the Horseshoe Inn. Breakfast is a B&Q affair - ie 'do it yourself' in the pub kitchen. The most continental aspect of items on offer were the pain au chocolat packets in the tupperware box on a grubby formica breakfast bar. Oh and free WIFI - forget it! One bar of signal at best due to pub being in a valley. My advice to anyone visiting Shepton Mallet, bite the bullet and pay a bit extra for a room in a classier hotel as this one is not worth the advertised £60 per night.

Review 16:The only positive about this establishment was the easy walking distanceto Shepton Mallet but otherwise, avoid at all costs.

Review 17:It was like sleeping on the side of the motorway ,so busy with traffic most of the evening /early hours in morning.Breakfast is a small kitchen cupboard with breakfast bar and make your own toast and tea/coffee.

Review 18:clean fresh .

Review 19:There we're many things not to like about this accommodation, which include the overall cleanliness and dampness of it. The breakfast being served in the utility room with again the horrid smell and cleanliness issue. A bad experience all round.

Review 20:The bed was fairly comfortable and the location alright. It was good to have wireless broadband.

Review 21:Very informal and flexible. The automatic lighting is clever. Local info and a bible available in the room. Though it's a shared bathroom i like the big shower cubicle and shower head. Clean bed sheet and towels.

Review 22:A few things in the breakfast area (dishes and glasses) were a bit dirty but didn't effect the overall experience really.

Review 23:Friendly, helpful staff and welcoming to the whole family (we had a baby with us) Comfortable room. Safe/secure. nice location

Review 24:The kitchen and stairways need a major spring clean!

Review 25:The manager was helpful and accommodating to our needs. Use of the kitchen and fridge was good also.

Review 26:This is a lovely Pub/B&B with very entertaining Land Lord. The room was lovely with Tea & Coffee making facilities and an on sweet Bathroom with Shower. The Continental Breakfast was all ready for us when we left early for the Glastonbury Festival, which is only 2 miles away.

Review 27:Incredibly rude staff! Having arrived slightly earlier than check in time, I asked politely if I could leave my bags there before checking in later, as I had a wedding to attend. I was berated for not calling to say I was going to be early (I was travelling all morning with no signal!), was made to apologise (who is the guest here?!) and felt guilty, even as I was handing over the money for my stay! Two other guests were treated equally badly and left immediately... I don't blame them. Very poor service.

Review 28:Ok location, reasonable room.

Review 29:Do it yourself breakfast, and I mean do it yourself, everything (cereals, bread, milk, kettle, etc. is in a tiny kitchen and you just have to do it yourself, no option for cooked breakfast. Shared bathroom so when busy there was no chance for a shower.

Review 30:The room was clean, the shared bathroom was clean.

Review 31:The only thing we didn't like was the breakfast area. The choice was limited and you had to do everything yourself.

Review 32:I had to travel down to the area for a wedding and needed a place to stay over night for myself and two other family members. We all had a great experience staying here as the staff were so accommodating and helpful. We had to book in early because of the wedding so I call the day before asking if that was okay and Ken the owner answered said it was fine and he would be there waiting for our arrival and even though we arrived earlier than we thought he was still there siting to let us in.

Review 33:Was on a main road with no parking, had to park up a hill and do a few walks back & forth with bags. Wifi you could only use at the bar, no connection in the room, which was dissapointing.

Review 34:Rural location and beautiful countryside, was made very welcome by staff, arrived late in the day and there was, no where close to eat, so Bar Manager ordered Pizza for us, only stayed two nights, which was plenty and a Continental breakfast suplied, was good as out most of the time, was in the attic room which was ok for what we wanted... Great if you want basic B&B...

Review 35:The room we had looked as if it wasn't used in years. The air was so dusty it was almost hard to breathe! Had to open all the windows despite it being a pretty cold night. Breakfast was poor too. Basically a loaf of bread, cereal, some yogurts, bit of a fruit and a few packaged pastries. None of it looked appetising.

Review 36:Bed was comfortable and the owner was friendly. Room was very traditional, which didn't bother me but could see how it would put some people off.

Review 37:Off street parking but I found a place just across the road. Would have been nice if they did food

Review 38:Landlord was very friendly. Above the pub but no problems with noise. Room was clean and tidy and id definitely return

Review 39:We should have been warned about the amount of steps we would have to negotiate (with heavy luggage). The proprietor could really try to communicate better.

Review 40:Very quaint and a good breakfast.

Review 41:No evening food available so had to travel to get food. Right on the main road.

Review 42:Close to where we wanted to go. The pub had a live band in the night but we could barely here it in our room.

Review 43:The breakfast was ridiculous. Kitchen and cutlery was filthy. No cooked breakfast and no where to sit, stood up in kitchen as there was only two stools at breakfast bar and not much room, all was dirty and not professional.

Review 44:The triple room we stayed in was quaint.

Review 45:Disapointed by empty Shampoo botlles left in the Shower and no replacement available as well as a small and cramped Breakfast area. But above anything else I kept awake untill at least 2am by a couple of parties being by the Pub. This was paticlarily annoying when I was planning to get up at 6:45 the following morning. Why did you take room bookings when you know there would be noise from enjoying Party ?

Review 46:i didnt have any complaints.

Review 47:my room was clean, had everything i needed and was super value for money. The shared bathroom was large, clean and the shower is lovely.

Review 48:Breakfast buffet was poor and very basic. It was not a pleasant area to eat in, more like a storage area.

Review 49:Friendly host in the pub in the evening, didn't see them in the morning.

Review 50:Travelling alone I thought the staff may have made conversation with me to make me feel welcome, breakfast was a do it yourself job although all things were at hand

Review 51:Room was comfy, good shower although bathroom was cold

Review 52:Nothing really, being a pub you expect some noise until the pub closes. No on suite toilet but didn'bother me at all as the bathroom wasn't far from room.

Review 53:Near to the exhibition I was visiting. which was very handy. Bed very comfortable and room nice and warm.

Review 54:Shared bathroom with management, appalling. Poor poor poor breakfast facilities, self service loaf of bread and a carton of Apple juice, no seating and all in a 2x3ft area, lazy and shocking provision

Review 55:Access to a microwave

Review 56:The breakfast room was not as clean as it should be.

Review 57:Room was clean, bright and a good size. Shared bathroom was clean and large and extra toilets were available downstairs. The publican was friendly and helpful. There was a good variety of foods for breakfast.

Review 58:breakfast room adequate but dingy, help yourself , all good , plenty of basic stuff, tea coffee bread cereal toast etc, microwave fuit.

Review 59:friendly recieptoin room comfy with tea and coffee.good value overall

Review 60:no ensuite shared dirty bathroom noisy road with arctics no cooked breakfast no parking no one there in morning loose teabags in room no water in kettle dirty carpets damp drafty windows lorries go past window from 04.00am wakes you up, can hear pub converstaions whilst in bed until 23.30 ish, lots of banging noises

Review 61:nice comfy bed

Review 62:I can not fault anything

Review 63:In a pretty hamlet it’s the pub of my childhood - real, not gastro nonsense, greeted by a wood burner and good ale, once I got in after work there was little incentive to leave, attracting friendly and welcoming locals who travel to be there - it authenticity is major reason to stay, it is extremely clean and comfortable, I think the pictures are great but personally the reality was better.

Review 64:The noise from the BUSY road on one side and the extractors etc. on the other side even with the windows firmly closed. They would also be better off not trying to offer a continental breakfast rather than the very poor offering in a squalid `cupboard` size area across from a dirty kitchen area stacked high with dirty dishes from the night before!!

Review 65:The room was spacious and the en suite adequate

Review 66:Shared bathroom No cooked breakfast Had to make our own breakfast in a tiny room No proper dining facilities in which to eat it and it was very basic

Review 67:The room The Bed

Review 68:noise and beer smell from the pub below, shared bathroom, breakfast is diy in a tiny room, mostly just bread and cereal

Review 69:comfy bed, clean room, friendly staff

Review 70:No fruit juice on 1st morning for breakfast. Only opens at 4pm so could not book in earlier.

Review 71:Cleanliness of bedroom. Friendliness of staff. 5 minute walk to centre of Shepton Mallet

Review 72:We arrived at Horseshoe Inn after a long drive, and we found a confy bedroom and,we experienced the real country life with the best Ales we've ever tasted.. The host is so nice and layed back and we had a very good breakfast too!

Review 73:the stairs and the entrance to the rooms were very unwelcoming the decoration could do with an update along with a rethink on the breakfast area

Review 74:The staff were friendly and the rooms were clean and tidy nothing was to much trouble

Review 75:Did not like being charged £65 for two people. Instead of £50 as on booking .com I informed the hotel of a drop in numbers before my visit, so I expected to be charged £50.

Review 76:some good beers available and the shower in the bathroom was good.

Review 77:We had to see ourselves out in the morning and prepare our own breakfast. The cleanliness of the kitchen and breakfast room was poor, no soap in the bathroom. Parking was extremely difficult with no onsite parking.

Review 78:Bed was very comfortable, Room and ensuite recently renovated.

Review 79:Had to go behind bar to go upstairs - very steep stairs not suitable for all. Live music very loud vibration & noise felt in room. Breakfast facilities small area bar stools buffet very poor - no staff present.

Review 80:Rooms were clean

Review 81:Too much noise from the main road - double glazing needed on the windows

Review 82:clean rooms with everything supplied that we required. Friendly , helpful staff.

Review 83:The bed quilt was too thick for this time of year. There was no cooked breakfast had to help yourselves to what was there. The breakfast was poor vaule for the money

Review 84:Self locking, key pad operated doors No bedside table or light Only one bathroom/ toilet. Needs separate second toilet and/ or wash hand basin in bed room. Only luck warm water in the whb to shave with. Breakfast sitting space too all- only two seats at counter in small kitchen / pantry. Had to eat my breakfast standing in the adjacent washing up scullery. Need net curtain on street view window No chair in room Mirror too low for practical use.

Review 85:Comfortable bed Smart new bathroom fittings

Review 86:When I booked this it stated breakfast included! It didn't state that you had to make the breakfast yourselves! Bit of a surprise, the room we had to use was tiny, just a worktop come brekfast bar and three high stools to sit on. It was adequate food there, just wasn't expecting to make it! It should be stated, when booking this b+b.

Review 87:Nice big room, very clean and comfortable.

Review 88:Loved the whole stay, the location is fantastic, with easy access to Wells and Cheddar gauge. The staff are friendly and helpfull. Will defiantly return.

Review 89:Downstairs on opposite side to breakfast kitchen was not too clean and just looked in need of attention. No staff around in the morning, if you had needed anything. Stairs and corridors were not a problem to us but not suitable for anyone with mobility problems.

Review 90:Triple Room was large light and airy. Bedding and towels were clean and smelt freshly laundered. own bathroom very clean and good shower good. hospitable welcome from landlord, and advice given about good eating places nearby. Good breakfast plenty of choice- help yourself. We sat outside in garden to eat. Good value for money and would stay again.

Review 91:There wasnt many nearby shops to get evening meals, thier also wasn't on site parking and the complimentary brekfast was very bland.

Review 92:We was upgraded to a better room for free and had a pleasant stay at the inn.

Review 93:You could hear the Noise from the Pub in the Rooms above. The kitchen facilities weren't the cleanest ones

Review 94:Rooms are nice and clean Nice Pub and a Little Beer Garden downstairs

Review 95:Despite the Booking posting, there is no dedicated parking, and little on-street space. The Inn does not serve food in the evening, so one must walk to town to eat. Breakfast consists of fruit, croissants, and soft white rolls set out in a dark, dingy area that appears to be a former closet or utility room. The Inn might well consider having a staff member present for an hour in the morning, allowing guests to eat in one of the bars. Unless they do so, I could not recommend the Horseshoe to any but the most frugal travelers. Booking sends the e-mails of guests to the hotels (a different inn contacted me). That means, in my view, that there is no excuse for not informing guests that the Booking site is wrong, and there is no dedicated parking. I would not have stayed there with a rental car, had I known what I was getting into.

Review 96:The staff were kind, the building historic, and the room was attractive.

Review 97:Kitchen cleanliness left a little to be desired, they have obviously only just converted some of the upstairs rooms to hotel rooms from a pub which hadn't used its kitchen for some time - I'm sure it will improve quickly once they finish the works and give the downstairs a thorough clean. They left the orange juice out overnight so by the morning it had a bit of a funny taste. Instant Nescafe coffee - would have preferred something smoother. Woken both mornings by the sound of heavy goods vehicles going past outside. Wouldn't recommend to light sleepers.

Review 98:Free parking on the street behind Quaint villagey type pub downstairs so you could have a drink very easily Nice atmosphere Friendly staff Comfortable bed, quite spacious room, Flat screen TV, window seat wide enough to sit on and read. Continental Breakfast very generous (2x pieces of fruit, 2 x croissants/brioches + toast, cereal, fruit juice, coffee etc) Shared bathroom was very nicely appointed - huge shower, clean. Owner/Manager was very nice when I decided to shorten my stay they only charged me the nights I had stayed.

Review 99:Rooms overall clean, but crockery wasn't washed after the former guests. Towels were so new they still give off fluff. Breakfast facilities so-so: quite small and in a not so nice basement room which is overfilled with other stuff. Location is quite a walk from restaurants and right at a loud street. (Some rooms are not en-suite, take care whilst booking.)

Review 100:The rooms are lovely, they offer a lot of space and are designed with an eye for details. Everything is newly renovated, offering an up-to-date bathroom.

Review 101:landlord made us very welcome , was a genuine lovely guy , he could not do enough to park

Review 102:Nothing

Review 103:Even though I arrived late it wasn't a problem

Review 104:No cooked breakfast available. No decent size bath towels.

Review 105:Friendliness and attention of staff

Review 106:Some of the staff was very helpfull and friendly.

Review 107:The room was exactly as pictured and the staff were very friendly and extremely helpful

Review 108:Breakfast, we expected a full cooked English breakfast, what we got was a continental style, disappointing!

Review 109:A very good room.

Review 110:Self service

Review 111:Location

Review 112:Bit cold and didn't have own bathroom

Review 113:Comfy cosy and nice people

Review 114:Very friendly and welcoming. I will be staying there again.

Review 115:Entrance up to the bedrooms was very unclean and breakfast was non existent.

Review 116:Bed was comfy and room was clean.

Review 117:Friendly staff

Review 118:Smell of damp. Worse in the morning. Room was above a skittle alley, which people were playing all evening.

Review 119:Breakfast facilities were very poor. Evidence of vermin in kitchen area.

Review 120:Bed was comfy

Review 121:Had make you own breakfast because no staff around in the morning

Review 122:The rooms were comfortable and the beer was good

Review 123:Bin hadn't been emptied in room since previous guests. Help yourself breakfast.

Review 124:Good location.

Review 125:Able to check in earlier.

Review 126:The "breakfast" consisted of weetabix and toast, thing is there was hardly any milk. A very poor excuse for a B+B

Review 127:Not a lot

Review 128:We did not actually stay at this property due to the extremely rude owner. We were there for 5 minutes and walked out, such a horrible experience!

Review 129:WIFI was not very good

Review 130:The room was great - very roomy and nice bathroom. Beds were very comfortable.

Review 131:nothing

Review 132:everything

Review 133:Terse and lacking atmosphere

Review 134:Clean and tidy but basic decor
