Reviews for George and Dragon Ashbourne

Review 1:Only one bedside table light. Parking vouchers needed.

Review 2:Friendly staff with a can do attitude. Log fire. Good quality pub meals. Rooms small but clean. In centre of Ashbourne which has a variety of interesting shops.

Review 3:Bit over hot in the room but you can control that.

Review 4:Great central location in the heart of historic Ashbourne. Really friendly staff and very dog friendly, and they have a friendly dog and cat.

Review 5:Fantastic welcome. Good range of ales and a welcoming fire. Accomodation was clean, comfortable and outside courtyard exit for the dogs really useful.

Review 6:Staff were fantastic. The room was compact but very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The food was lovely. A fantastic stay overall, not one complaint.

Review 7:TV not working properly till last day. Nets would be an idea for the windows in daylight hours.Another bedside table as the only one was crowded with tea making facilities and a lamp. Some hanging space in the bathroom to hang gowns and towels.

Review 8:Bed were very comfortable and clean. Location handy for everything. Showers easy to use and spotless

Review 9:No breakfast option, had to wait for cafe opposite to open at 9am.

Review 10:Great stop for biking trip at start of Tissington Trail, with secure storage for bikes.

Review 11:We turned up after a day of walking and were exhausted, got showered and turned in for an early night only to be woken up by a rock covers band. Granted, we were staying above a pub on a Friday night but the drum kit was directly below our room and we could hear every note and word the band was playing. We weren't warned about this either.

Review 12:Great location, friendly staff, nice clean rooms.

Review 13:We had a lovely night, the pub staff were friendly & welcoming, the rooms beautifully decorated, clean and warm. I would definitely recommend The George & Dragon.

Review 14:No breakfast available but plenty of choice in 5 minute walk. Parking can be a pain

Review 15:Don't be fooled by outside appearance, we were, but once inside around the fire drinking nice beer and playing pool you forget that outside needs a bit of paint. Great location, nice beer, welcoming staff at a fair price. Rooms small but comfy and just enough for one/two nights

Review 16:just parking situation.

Review 17:slight problem with the parking as couldnt find long stay car park so had a steep walk park the car on a hill then walk back to market square

Review 18:Not so much something that we didn't like, but just a tip - sleeping on the bed with a sloping floor after drinking large amounts of wine was a little problematic!

Review 19:The staff were incredibly friendly and chatty, as were the local, regular drinkers. It is directly opposite the tourist information centre and very central to the local amenities.

Review 20:The traffic noise is a bit of an issue early morning.

Review 21:Great value, location and very friendly staff. A wonderful English pub where visitors could have a drink and talk with the locals. Also loved that it was dog friendly. Ruben is a sweetie.

Review 22:There is no breakfast available, but there is a host of cafes in town.

Review 23:Lovely cosy warm room - I was worried about noise, but it was totally fine. There was also access to the room without walking through the pub.

Review 24:I can't honestly pretend that our room was 5-star comfort. But with excellent value for money and the best pub-food in town downstairs, we would be happy to come back.

Review 25:Shower needed a good clean, curtains to long in room need turning up, I tripped over them .otherwise great value for the stay .

Review 26:Very nice staff friendly, and accommodating, room nice size

Review 27:The bed was a tiny bit hard and because of the room as a whole, the bed was slightly higher at one end but not a massive problem.

Review 28:In a very nice part of town and staff were very friendly and polite.

Review 29:Should come with breakfast, don't know if it usually does but the price felt a little too high without B&B

Review 30:Central location right on the square, although the pub was closed when we were there staff couldn't have been more helpful and allowed us to check in early. Exactly what you would expect from a pub with rooms.

Review 31:Live music till midnight could be a problem if you wanted an early night on a Friday and market setting up outside at 6.30 Saturday morning. Neither bothered us though really enjoyed our stay.friendly

Review 32:Great location free parking and very friendly staff

Review 33:WiFi intermittent to say the least ,even the credit card reader crashed. Small moan so hence my rating score.

Review 34:The staff were great, rooms comfy and menu extensive for Good Pub Grub. The area was central to where I wanted to be.

Review 35:No parking on market days Thursday and Saturday.

Review 36:great place to stay in ashbourne ideally located for shops bars and restaurants. All in walking distance.

Review 37:Realize that you are sleeping over a pub, so it may be a bit noisy until closing time. We were there on a Sunday, so not much of a problem

Review 38:Friendly people, great location.

Review 39:Avoid unless no other choice.

Review 40:Sani flo in en-suite bathroom was extremely noisy and had a lot of little black flies in situ. Friday night band noise was expected and anticipatex but lack of a breakfast and creaking floors left overall impression as poor.

Review 41:Plumbing and fan a little tempremental in room. Noisy from traffic at first before it was explained about double windows.

Review 42:Very central. Room serviced well. Lovely historic building. Staff helpful.

Review 43:The rooms are above a pub which at weekends have live bands or discos until 1am. There is no option for breakfast, but there are plenty of little bistros scattered around the little town centre. No parking.

Review 44:Very nice rooms and appropriately appointed.

Review 45:There is nothing negative about the hotel or the town, lovely place.

Review 46:The overall feel of the place was brilliant. It seems to be a very much family run pub with 5 rooms upstairs. The owners are lovely and very willing to help with anything! They are putting a lot of effort into the place so will only be improving in the future.

Review 47:Friendly staff with great beer and location for visiting local villages and towns. Near the shops in the middle of the village and really friendly people and great atmosphere inside the pub and outside.

Review 48:Not good to stay in front room on Friday night unless you are an early riser. Rock Band were superb so we went down stairs to watch. Tractor and market set up at 5am just outside is too noisy. Good double glazed window though. It was a compromise between too warm or noisy We had to shut the window.

Review 49:Good Rock Band and Friendly Staff.

Review 50:The women who owned the hotel and pub was very friendly and helpful. My 12 yr old Nephew enjoyed his stay and was allowed in the pub on a night time to play pool. loved it

Review 51:The room had an awful view and it was rather short. The surrounding area was dull and had to pay for parking. There was nowhere near to get breakfast and not many places nearby to get any other meals, other than takeaways which would have meant paying for parking while sitting in the room.

Review 52:The room was lovely, the staff were very friendly and quite helpful when we asked about information.

Review 53:Someone should warn me when I called and asked if it is ok to stay with young child that that there will be rock band playing.

Review 54:I like friendly approach of the staff. They moved us to the back of the house. Also separate entrance, clean room and after midnight very comfortable night.

Review 55:Nothing at all to dislike except maybe the fact that you can not get a breakfast at the George and Dragon. There are however lots of eating places very near in the pretty little town of Ashbourne. Oh, and parking is a little difficult.

Review 56:The George and Dragon is essentially a pub with rooms above. It was great however that the rooms had their own access. The room we had, although not massive was comfortable enough. The pub downstairs serve great beer and great food. I can not fault it at all. The young girl who booked us in who i believe is the Landlords daughter was extremely friendly and helpful, as indeed were all the staff. thank you for a great stay!

Review 57:We were looking forward to some live music, but the band advertised did not happen. It was quite noisy on Saturday morning with the market setting up. They could really do with double glazing on the windows instead of a cracked single glazed window.

Review 58:Right in the town centre, great pub to have dinner and spend the evening having a good selection of drinks. (Stayed Friday night). We had steak and burger, both great. Comfy bed and great room, clean shower room (electric shower)

Review 59:No wifi even though it said there was free wifi, but was not a major problem.

Review 60:Really frendly staff Nice room we stayed in Would definitely stay again!

Review 61:Nothing. But a warning - the pub is on Ashbourne's main square, and Ashbourne can be very lively at weekends. So don't go if you like a nice quiet early night!

Review 62:Staff v friendly and helpful. Nice pub selling good beer and good food. Breakfast isn't included but there's a couple of nice cafes close by that do breakfast.

Review 63:They had a disco night, but just told us after the purchase. So we had noise until 4 o'clock in the morning. And the pression of the shower was so weak that i decided that it would be better to not wash my hair cause i would have run out of hot water before the end.

Review 64:Only poor thing was the TV in the bedroom not able to watch due to signal breaking up constantly & free wifi in bedroom poor, needs a booster.

Review 65:Staff very obliging. Whilst there it was my partners birthday, we dined there & through the day I asked if they could put a birthday candle in his pudding. They didn't have one but went out to buy one! Food excellent!

Review 66:Parking was tricky with there only being public parking available. I did not see this as a problem as the cost of parking and the cost of staying at the George and Dragon still make this extremely good value.

Review 67:It was in an ideal location for all the local facilities. The meal was excellent and although we were late ordering they were more than happy to provide a meal. The atmosphere was friendly and worm.

Review 68:Nothing we didn't like....well maybe having to pay for parking. But was only a few pound. No real hardship.

Review 69:This is a lovely popular pub in the heart of Ashbourne. Our two little pooches and my husband and I were made to feel really welcome. The young lady who showed us to our room was very pleasant and helpful. The room was clean and the bed extremely comfy. There was tea/coffee making facilities and a flat screen tv. The bathroom was large for the size of the room with a shower and toiletries included. We had a peaceful night and slept well. No breakfast was included but we knew this and was not a problem as The Flower cafe was open and allows dogs. We enjoyed our trip to Ashbourne and would return and stay at the George & Dragon again and would recommend. Nice food served in the bar too. Try the Dancing Duck Ale....very nice. Loved the real fire too.

Review 70:the noise of the market setting up on thursdays at 6.00 am the the noise from the lorries all day and night, then deliveries of beer ect very early in the morning

Review 71:ease of getting to shops

Review 72:Excessive noise after the disco below finished with revellers in the market square until about 4.00 am - and we were at the back of the hotel

Review 73:Within walking distance of pubs and restaurants

Review 74:being accused of smoking in the room by owner as a smoke alarm went off on landing, wi fi kept going off, and the heating was cold when you need it and hot in the night when you didnt need it.doors banging all the time as they were on a spring and a washing machine on the landing on, overall very noisy, so if you want a relaxing break dont go on a saturday night, the pub is full of young teenagers and load music.(not even good music) as we are not that boring we would have enjoyed it if we were into rave music

Review 75:The Staff lovely and helpful, in a great location.

Review 76:The noisy music, but we were warned when we booked so it was our choice.

Review 77:The convenience of the location. Warm comfortable room, nice and clean with a good view over the market square. Convenient parking and excellent food..

Review 78:The disco on the Saturday night we stayed. It did state disco but this was more nightclub! The whole room vibrated!!!

Review 79:Really lovely friendly staff. Great food and beer. Extremely welcoming to our canine traveller. Fairly basic but very clean. Everything you'd need.

Review 80:Nothing really negative to say about our stay. If I were to get picky the room was quite small and there could have been more power points, but these were very minor considerations.

Review 81:Really friendly and as a bonus the pub serves great reasonably priced food. The room was clean and well presented. Overall good value for money.

Review 82:our shower was cold and as 2 tall adults the ceiling in our room was low. There was a tv but impossible to watch because of signal?!

Review 83:the staff were very friendly and the rooms were lovely and warm. We ate here in the evening which was very nice. Just a shame it wasn't bed and breakfast.

Review 84:Friendly staff and excellent value for money. Basic accommodation (reflecting price) but clean, comfortable and great location. I would definitely recommend the 'George and Dragon.'

Review 85:Bed was lumpy and we both woke up with a bad back! No plug sockets near the kettle and we had to place on the floor to boil Lack of any breakfast

Review 86:Central and helpful staff and room very clean

Review 87:Nothing to dislike.

Review 88:Great little pub with great food, great beer and great prices to match. Very friendly, clean and comfortable place to stay, right in the heart of the town. Staff were excellent, we arrived way too early and even though our room wasn't ready it was absolutely no problem to leave our things safely there, we were made very welcome. Would love to go back anytime.

Review 89:All spot on.

Review 90:We liked everything about this place, it's not our first time and it certainly won't be our last. Em who showed us to our room was fabulous a lovely credit to this establishment. Thanks and see you soon. Al n Ingrid.

Review 91:The TV was not working, but was rapidly fixed once we informed the staff. Parking is terrible! There is no site parking only nearby 2hr pay & display. To leave your car any longer you need to park a considerable distance from the hotel which was irritating. No breakfast served, but plenty of Cafe's open nearby (Except on sunday).

Review 92:Staff were exellent, friendly & helpful Location was beautiful, right in town centre. Room was extremely clean Food (evening) & Beer was excellent.

Review 93:Parking was slightly difficult and cost a little more than we were hoping.

Review 94:The staff were really friendly and it was a great place to go for a nice weekend trip. Food was lovely at the George and Dragon.

Review 95:The disco on Saturday night was very loud in our room, located above thespeakers. Can't really complain as we were told about the disco attime of booking. The vibration even caused items to fall of the bathroomshelf into the sink! Thankfully it finished earlier than expected (by12.00). Shame no breakfast is available but there are several cafeswithin a few minutes stroll.

Review 96:Great location, easy parking, cosy warm room, welcoming hosts &pooch friendly!

Review 97:Nothing well worth the money with lovely warm rooms at half the price of anywhere else in ashbourne

Review 98:The staff were so friendly, and the room was toastie warm on a very frostie night. The acess in and out of the goerge was brill even when we came in very late.

Review 99:Landlord very distracted at times. Said cheerio and thanks right in front of him, no response at all?? Odd!

Review 100:The location was spot on. Overlooking the pretty market square with pubs and restaurants all in walking distance. There is a good pub feel and community spirit. Pub serves food, but plenty to choose from on the doorstep, especially The Flowers cafe opposite for a hearty breakfast. Short drive to Bakewell.. Would definitely like to go again.

Review 101:Very loud rock music played late just below the room. Poor t.v. reception and iffy wi fi. Short stay pay & display parking.

Review 102:The comfort, the value, the food, the service and the central location.

Review 103:The noise from the live band and disco - although to be fair we were warned about this when we booked. The dinginess of the pub and the lack of parking. The room was fine. But the hotel was way overpriced for somewhere so down at heel.

Review 104:The location

Review 105:There is nothing to dislike.

Review 106:Fantastic location Comfortable rooms lovely homely feel staff could not do enough for you the owners really look after you to make your stay memorable and make you want to book again which are going to do soon. Would recommend the George and Dragon to anyone

Review 107:Was a bit noisy, but I was given fair and reasonable notice of this and as its a town centre pub this has to be expected.

Review 108:Location, comfy bed and modern en suite. Landlady friendly and the pub itself is lively and welcoming.

Review 109:No breakfast provided (but lots of occasions around in walking distance).

Review 110:Location central, room with view over the market place. Friendly staff, nice bar. Easy parking just in front of the building.

Review 111:Although we were warned about the Friday night live music, it was tough sleeping immediately above the bar where the band were actually playing.

Review 112:Price and quality of room were very good. It is in the centre of Ashbourne with some good pubs and restaurants close by.

Review 113:- Okay we didn't read the small print so after an extremely long day we were kept up late by a terrible band downstairs - if you appreciate your eardrums avoid a Friday night! - Parking is terrible on a weekend due to the market - Room 5 door didn't lock - Room 4 has a huge crack in the window and is drafty (old windows need replacing) - the bathroom was very cramped and we couldn't figure out the fan so it got very steamy - The kettle lead is not long enough and had to be put on the floor to boil - it could do with two bedside tables, having one was weird! All in all I wouldn't stay there again, it's ok for a quick visit, would never stay on a weekend and in reality, as someone who has stayed all over the world I don't think it deserves a 8+ rating on booking.com

Review 114:The bed was comfortable and the free cookies were nice

Review 115:Be aware they have a DJ on til 12.30am on a Saturday night, it didn't bother us but if your looking for an early night then I'd stay elsewhere!

Review 116:All the staff and landlord & landlady were lovely & friendly! A great place to stay. Dogs felt very welcome too, and loved their walks up the peaks!

Review 117:The room was extremely cold. The mattress was hard. Appeared to be many bed bugs, as both myself and my daughter were scratching a lot. There was a band performing downstairs who were very loud! When making the booking I saw no mention of a band on a friday night, and none of the staff mentioned it when myself and my 5 year old checked in. The band didn't finish until midnight, and clearly a 5 year old goes to bed well before that time, so it would have been good customer service to at least of mentioned about the band. It turns out that this is mentioned in the small print, which I certainly didn't notice, or else I would never have made the booking, and it should be made much clearer, so that this important piece of information is not able to be missed so easily!

Review 118:Staff were friendly

Review 119:It was a pity the pub did not offer breakfast. But, fortunately, two pleasant cafes, with outdoor seating and conveniently located on the square, do.

Review 120:This was a friendly pub which served really tasty food and provided good-value, clean accommodation in a characterful building located in the heart of the town.

Review 121:Parking is a bit of a pain, had to get up at 8 to put money in the meter. Not too much of an issue. The parking is right outside and it's fairly cheap.

Review 122:The staff were very welcoming and friendly... Made us feel very comfortable. Room was a nice size with good facilities. Cozy pub open late so was nice to have a drink when we got in late.

Review 123:We stayed in twin rooms, each having a single bed. I did have trouble sleeping though it was probably just me being spoilt by my double bed.. The TV didn't seem to work(maybe an issue with the aerial connection). We didn't get around to letting the host know about the issue but we were not bothered about it.

Review 124:Friendly welcoming hosts. The accommodation was great value. Great food, good prices. Friendly cat. Good beer. The rooms were in great condition. Great location, the reason we stayed at this accommodation was because it was only 20mins away from Alton Towers. Much better than staying at the travelodges nearby. The pub didn't serve breakfast but the host suggested a cafe which was just opposite them and had a great breakfast there. The parking can be limited because of the market and the pay and display. Instead we had parked in a street a few blocks away that didn't have any limits in parking, it being only a 3 min walk.

Review 125:Plug for kettle could do with being higher up on wall instead of near the floor, being in a front room the noise from road was constant-did not get much sleep! Tv signal poor. No wi-fi.

Review 126:Easy to find, lady in bar was very friendly and welcoming, very clean room, nicely decorated, comfortable bed, plenty of tea/coffee.

Review 127:Rooms are basic but this is reflected in the price of accommodation. Was a bit noisy in the morning from road works right outside our window.

Review 128:Friendly welcome from the owners of the G&D who made us feel really welcome, even kept the kitchen open late to make us a something to eat. The food was fresh, tasty a responsibly priced. Good atmosphere in the bar which is situated on the ground floor below the bedrooms. Great location in the centre of Ashbourne. Would definitely go back.

Review 129:Shame we only stayed for one night to go to Alton towers and had to leave just after our stay ;)

Review 130:Wonderfull people. Beautifull view on the town sqaure Verry cozy room

Review 131:The only issue we experienced was the parking. The pub had no car park so had to park on pay and display Which was £2.30 per 2hrs and £1 between 6pm and 8am. Was a bit of a pain keep having to go out to get tickets but with the room being so cheap you didn't really mind. The carpark was right outside too.

Review 132:The staff were friendly upon arrival. The room was decorated lovely and very clean. Despite there being a pub downstairs there wasn't hardly any noise. Great location for if visiting Alton Towers as it's cheap compared to most hotels in the area. Overall brilliant.

Review 133:The building shook with live Disco music in addition it attracked largenumbers of young people who continued to party outside our windows untilthe early hours. Unsympathic Manage who also tried to charge an extra£10 as I requested a twin room. Important InformationI.E.,"Live/Disco" which spoilt our stay should be in largeprint at the start of booking.and not after we had confirm the booking.

Review 134:Rooms Clean and Comfortable. Friendly staff. Good location in MarketPlace with adequate parking

Review 135:Nothing

Review 136:The friendliness of the staff, the food was excellent, the room was clean and comfy, all in all we would rate The George and Dragon 10/10, We will be staying again in the future.

Review 137:very friendly staff and a lovely area

Review 138:staff really friendly very helpful, excellent food, nice room relaxing break

Review 139:The food was funny as was worse presentation ever but hey we still eat it.

Review 140:Fantastic if you have a pet. Location was the best.

The Fine Print

Please note that the property has a live band playing every Friday night from 21:00 until 0:00 and a live DJ playing every Saturday from 21:30 until 0:30.
