Reviews for Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa
Review 1:The reception staff were extremely helpful and friendly - couldn't have done more for me. I stayed over a very busy weekend and they remained courteous, polite and professional. I am a frequent traveller and I have to say, there are not many hotels that I have stayed in that I have been unable to fault! The room was spotless and very comfortable indeed. Well done, Apex Dundee - I will be returning!
Review 2:We booked on a non-refundable rate and had to cancel due to a family bereavement. Without prompting, and once the hotel were aware of our circumstances, we were offered to re-book and hence save our booking. This was hugely appreciated. Top marks to the thoughtful staff and reservation service at Apex.
Review 3:Breakfast could be better and has a room for improvement.
Review 4:Comfortable bed, overal clean in a good location. Polite staff and good service. Pool and gym were great and provided us indoor fun while outside was wild.
Review 5:The kitchen was closed and there was a very limited evening 3 course menu, which was mainly bread based. As I try to avoid wheat, I ended up not having an evening meal as I did not want to leave the hotel. The staff were so friendly and accommodating that I'm sure if I'd have asked they would have found an alternative, but as it was late I didn't bother.
Review 6:The facilities and comfort of the room
Review 7:Very good location, friendly staff, excellent facilities and free parking. I was made to feel as if I was important and nothing was too much trouble. I will definitely be returning to this venue.
Review 8:We had a room facing the river. The staff was quick to respond and allocated another room when the first had a problem with the heating. Room was spacious, comfortable and had a great view. Staff were friendly and helpful. Parking is available.
Review 9:The burn marks in the bedside table and the beds need new mattresses
Review 10:This is your average Premier Inn style hotel - nothing above basic But good value for the money as its not expensive . Free parking and eggs benedict for breakfast wins points . Nice view of river.
Review 11:Nothing that bad at all. The kitchen was closed and couldn't get hot food in the morning but there was muffins and cakes so not too bad.
Review 12:Spa was nice enough. Staff were very friendly and the deluxe room looking onto the river was lovely.
Review 13:I did not like the fact that I had to wait for over 1.5 hours for my room to be cleaned and ready for me,I was told I would be informed in a short time, but I had to actually go back to reception and ask when I would be able to get into my room.......this was not acceptable, nor was it acceptable to be left waiting this length of time to enter my room.
Review 14:I did like the hotel, the staff were friendly enough
Review 15:People coming down to use the the pool in their pyjamas and kids having breakfast in their onesies and just a pair of socks on their feet in the restaurant
Review 16:Rooms and staff were excellent
Review 17:Some of the staff were a bit surly and the housekeeping team were quite noisy early in the mornings.
Review 18:Great Location and excellent breakfasts. Modern style and good pool/gym facilities.
Review 19:Nothing
Review 20:The location in the city center is ideal, the rooms were very clean and well decorated. We accessed the spa in the morning before leaving, it was an amazing experience! Would highly recommend.
Review 21:As a family we normally stay at the Grassmarket Apex in Edinburgh, which also has a pool as we love to swim. We found that the time restrictions for our kids and the fact that our 8 yr old daughter either had to dress by herself or join the men in their changing room was the only down side to the hotel. On our stay next time I realise now I would accompany her down and help her dress then come back down to help her out.
Review 22:We loved the location, the hotel is friendly, clean and comfortable and the fact it's 2 beds and not sofa beds is fantastic.
Review 23:only one small complaint shower pressure could have been better
Review 24:liked location and room was great as we had a corner room and had great views of quay and the river
Review 25:Wedding 1st night went on til 1am. Fine fair enough but we were on the 5th floor! Food menu wasnt the best selection so ate out every morning and night.
Review 26:The spa facilities were fantastic. We both got massages and they were great!
Review 27:Prices on drinks were expensive
Review 28:Hotel was lovely , staff were very welcoming and friendly , breakfast was really really , swimming spa area was lovely kids really enjoyed it , would definitely book again
Review 29:A pillow got some stains under its cover. The room's acoustic insulation to the inner corridor is poor. There was no hot water for bath in our room one night after 12pm.
Review 30:friendly and responsive staffs, spacious room with all necessary facilities. the location is close to the tay river, the city centre and the train station.
Review 31:We stayed here as friends were getting married in the hotel and it was fantastic. The rooms were lovely and clean, we had a lovely view over the dock. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was also very nice
Review 32:Heating was a little noisy, sounded like rats in the ceiling. Kept my husband up. Got a call to our room at 3.30AM, which woke me and then couldn't get back to sleep due to noise from heating . We had the upgrade charge taken off after we complained about both issues which was good.
Review 33:The hotel has wonderful atmosphere. Check in was fast and easy. Got an upgrade to a room with a view(nice-ish view). Warm, comfy bed and pillows. Great Christmas dinner and breakfast! Husband had a swedish massage at Yu Spa and said it was great. Would recommend.
Review 34:I'm a regular to this hote,l and pleased to say it's one of my favourites in UK. Lovely location next to quay, with quality rooms and a top class Spa area.
Review 35:Brilliant, clean hotel in a good location very close to city centre. Reception staff were very pleasant and gave us room on the top floor as there was a xmas party that night and it could possibly have been a bit noisy! Didn't hear a thing in the end but it was a nice gesture.
Review 36:The breakfast was quite poor, especially for the price.
Review 37:The room was very nice, good view. The bed was very comfy and the bathroom had bath and shower which was good. Good TV too. The spa area was great, very good facilities!
Review 38:Staff were excellent as always. Moved us up to a master suite as we had to wait a little for our our original junior suite getting ready. Also as it was our anniversary. We had spent our wedding night at this apex the year before. A very nice member of staff at the front desk remembered us which was nice.
Review 39:We have stayed in many occasions since you opened however I felt standards have slipped badly now. We were at a function in the city quey suite and the menu was not up to the usual and neither was the service. I didn't like having to get our own coffee! It's not a cafe! Also we had lunch with friends in the restaurant and we only had the festive menu to choose from which is limited and more expensive. It just feels like standards are slipping. I have stayed in your Edinburgh hotels in other occasions too over the years and hope this slip in standards is temporary as I have always enjoyed staying with you in the past.
Review 40:Really nice hotel in a great location. Lovely comfortable room with a free plastic duck! I would highly recommend this property because for the price it was superb. I also used the restaurant which was very good too
Review 41:Upgraded for £16 to 'executive' twin. Huge beds and best pillows ever. Staff delightful. Had a lovely massage. Good dinner. Altogether brilliant. Very good price.
Review 42:I found the food to be quite expensive for a small portion
Review 43:Great location, just beside the Tay Bridge. Excellent room, great shower, secure free parking area.
Review 44:Description on booking .com stated a coffee machine was in room but it was only a kettle !
Review 45:Central to town....great pool area. Good comfy bar . Free parking.
Review 46:Only slight complaint was the breakfast was pre-cooked and put in platters, but the black pudding was a bit dry and the fried eggs a bit leathery. Everything else was very good.
Review 47:The rooms were quiet and much better sound-proofed than most hotels I have stayed in! Very clean and comfortable. Would definitely recommend.
Review 48:After a long day, I ordered room service and they brought me the wrong food
Review 49:Good pit stop when travelling from Glasgow to Aberdeen for an early morning meeting. Good pool area
Review 50:Ordered sandwich was told it would be half hour due to numbers ordered staff member arrived with sandwich within 5 minutes , bubbly, friendly and full of apologies...excellent attitude and service
Review 51:The staff were amazing. Dinner and breakfast in the hotel restaurant was excellent, really enjoyed it. The beds were so comfortable. Spa facitilies were excellent. Definitely going back again soon.
Review 52:1- Buffet Breakfast was poor 2- Lots of Disaple Parking in front but were empty perhaps at times gets full dont' know.
Review 53:The Hotel and location was good if you have a car
Review 54:Stayed here many times and it still hasn't disappointed me and honestly I don't think it ever will! Love my stay there every time. Il be back yet again x
Review 55:There was no fridge in the room and since we were staying for 3 nights definitely seen that as a nono Having said that the staff were very helpful and provided us with a fridge on the first day when I expressed my disappointment at not having one
Review 56:Staff were extremely polite and helpful and had a very good restaurant on site. Spa was a good addition especially if you're there on a wet day and nothing to do.
Review 57:[double room] so wide space, wide bed, wide desk, wide bathroom, and even wide TV! kind service (receipttion and restaurant, had not tried the spa), 12 o'clock check out. Also, it is closed to the bus station, which connects to St Andrews -the former royal region, destination of the University of St Andrews, the heritage of St Andrews Cathedral, and, the original destination of Golf.
Review 58:Our 3rd stay at this lovely hotel this time to celebrate the graduation of our daughter. The meal in the restaurant was superb that evening and a wonderful selection for breakfast with the best hotel scrambled eggs I've ever had. Now that she's not at Dundee university anymore we'll have to think of other excuses to stay here.
Review 59:The room wasn't as clean as I would have expected. There were slight mould growth between tiles in shower and one of the shower taps were broke. Also besides TV cabinet there was a big pile of dust from what looked like saw dust.
Review 60:The staff were extremely friendly. They were always helpful and around when needed.
Review 61:Your site says you get better deals booking early which we did. One of our friends couldn't book till later but got the same deal as us but also a £10 voucher on their day of arrival
Review 62:Friendly staff and location
Review 63:Thought the pool was cold the pool area not as pristine as it was 3yrs ago... My partners only dislike was that at the price of the room breakfast wasn't included, even a free continental with options to pay for a cooked breakfast?
Review 64:Great rooms on the 5th floor, views are great.. Really comfortable bed!!
Review 65:Small cheese - Bit of a queue at check-in (Friday afternoon) and no fridge in the room.
Review 66:Complimentary spa access. Attentive manager and staff. Free hotel parking. Great view from the room. 12:00 check-out as standard.
Review 67:Breakfast could be improved definately. Food v average, not very warm. Fruit didn't look fresh. Individual preserves all previously opened. Flowers on tables past their best. Poor coffee. Mess on floor. Let the stay down. Expected more as the room had been so good.
Review 68:The pleasant informative receptionist was lovely. Our room was excellent, clean, large, lovely view, fabulous comfy bed. Lovely bathroom with nice products. Robes provided too.
Review 69:I,m vegetarian and wasn,t a big choice on evening meal but pizza was really good.
Review 70:Recommended by 3 friends they were spot on. Twin room for me and mom, beds very comfy and room lovely. separate bath and shower was great. Great view over Dundee. Breakfast was really nice and what a choice and staff very friendly. Definitely will recommend and will stay again.
Review 71:Very cold draughts coming in the window of room 208 causing a sleepless night.
Review 72:we liked the friendliness of the staff. Also the good food and service.
Review 73:There was a wedding which dominated the entire hotel as it spilled into all adjoining areas. The Spa was closed so we never got a chance to use the facilities which everyone said were so good, as by the time it re-opened we were going out for a meal! I'd like to return to Dundee as its a great little city however not sure if this was ideal
Review 74:Location is excellent, staff are very friendly and helpful. The room was lovely and the breakfast was good.
Review 75:Location rather windswept - it was particularly stormy when I stayed but wind caused whistling and creaking on 5th floor windows, which would have kept me awake if I had not had earplugs. The hotel was easy to spot but a bit hard to walk to during waterfront development road works - both pavements closed on road from Dundee Station.
Review 76:Very nice pool and spa (sauna, steam room and hot tub). Good breakfast. Large comfortable bed and attractive room.
Review 77:One of is is disabled and the disabled parking only had one vehicle displaying a valid blue badge so was very awkward for us. Please can you police this for disabled guest?
Review 78:Fantastic staff, superb suite, brilliant cocktails and scrumptious breakfast.
Review 79:Lovely hotel, friendly staff, great breakfast, free parking and wifi - everything we needed. It was walking distance to the main part of town. Would definitely stay again
Review 80:Who could possibly have a dislike in this hotel!
Review 81:The location and the friendly helpful smiling staff?'. The room was most comfortable. Only had breakfast but the scrambled egg was the tastiest ever.
Review 82:We booked the junior suite and we never got a wink of sleep because the heat in the room was unbelievable. Sweating on top of the covers
Review 83:Large room, good location, clean and excellent bar and staff
Review 84:Greeted by very friendly and helpful staff on arrival. Very comfortable beds in a very clean room. the breakfast booked was all quality food at a very reasonable price.
Review 85:No mini bar available two bulbs faulty in room,no dressing gowns and several marks on seats in room, even though we paid for an upgrade.
Review 86:Nice and peaceful able to relax in comfort, easy access to go sightseeing.
Review 87:Good location with fantastic polite and helpful staff. Loved using the spa and swimming pool. Rooms spacious and comfortable. Definately great value for money
Review 88:bathroom floor flooded after shower,( we had a disabled persons room. )The lounge area was draughty.
Review 89:Close to city centre and the river and places to eat.
Review 90:The only fault I have is that the pillows were not to my liking and the breakfast was quite pricey!
Review 91:The staff were very friendly and helpful! The room was great!
Review 92:N/A
Review 93:Facilities are great. Food great. Rooms great and clean. Love the layout of reception bar area, where you can have a drink and meet company. Had a couple of great nights just sitting there.
Review 94:It would be great to have a fridge in the rooms. We said this the last time we stayed in a "normal" room but when we stayed in suite we had a fridge, really all rooms should gave them now. The hotel probably needs a wee bit of TLC now.
Review 95:The rooms with the water view.
Review 96:Very expensive room when I found out our breakfast wasn't included
Review 97:I thought the breakfast was included so I was very annoyed when I got the bill :-(
Review 98:Shower only has a fixed half screen rather than full sliding doors. Shower easily flooded bathroom floor.
Review 99:Attentive, polite staff at all times. Good choice for breakfast menu. Good sized room and ensuite with bath & shower.
Review 100:The spa was poor no hot tubs as they were broken the pool was cold. Sauna and steam rooms were not overly warm with no temperature regulation. Towels and showering facilities were good though.
Review 101:Breakfast was good and a comfortable bed. The staff were helpful welcoming.
Review 102:We would need 10 chapters to list the many extremely poor aspects of this hotel. Fundamentally this site is a chaotic shambles, unstable and frankly unsafe. Incidents of extreme shouting throughout the night. Plus an incident of [full] beer cans being thrown from an upper storey room and missing a family member by inches in the early evening. Very, very, unpleasant all in all.
Review 103:This is a shabby and tatty building, with no merits whatsoever.
Review 104:"Some" rooms are a bit tired now and need a bit of a paint up.
Review 105:Location is great. Facilities are fantastic and the staff are lovely and very helpful, always a smile.
Review 106:Breakfast service was awful. We finished our breakfast before they came with the coffee and toast we ordered.
Review 107:Plenty of plugs and a straightening heat pad. Reception staff very helpful and friendly.
Review 108:The pool area was cold, hot tubs were not working. Our kids although teenagers couldn't use the saunas, steam rooms or hot tubs (if they had been working) as they weren't 16 years old. We had chosen this hotel for our trip away as it had all if these facilities, so a bit disappointed.
Review 109:The room was a good size and very clean. Breakfast was good , with plenty of choice.
Review 110:bizarrely lengthy check in whilst pleasant staff stared at screens apparently looking for The Meaning Of Life....
Review 111:excellent value for money - big comfortable room, free wifi, excellent position, spa and gym
Review 112:The price of room service and the extra charge of £2.50 for tray service was ridiculous . £11.95 for a sandwich of only 2 pieces of bread and one slice of beef and a bowl of chips was way too much and add to that £2.50 tray charge is in my opinion a rip off.
Review 113:I liked the pool area and the room was very good. I found the hotel very clean .
Review 114:The rooms were freezing. Housekeeping was very bad - no gowns in room, no coffee or waters replaced, windows left wide open in the freezing cold with heating barely working, even after asking them to leave the windows closed. (Nothing like returning to your room at night in Scotland to find the windows open and the heating barely working, every evening) No shower cap and no fridge in room - One would expect at least one of these in a 4 star hotel. The hot tubs were out of order our entire stay. Just a general feeling of "short staffed", cutting corners, and needing an upgrade in most areas.
Review 115:Stayed at Apex before. Location good and usually good value for money. Good breakfast.
Review 116:There was something for every age any age can use pool and if your fit no matter what age you can use the gym from opening to close for free (If you are a resident) there is a beauty spa different treatments and prices, then there is the restaurant where there is a great menu, and a fully stocked bar and when it's time for bed you are garentueed a peaceful restful night and tea/coffee /hot chocolate mix so there is no need to go thirsty plus bottled water also in the rooms.Everything Fantastic.
Review 117:Unfortunately the whirlpools were out of order and the swimming pool a little cold.
Review 118:Rooms were nicely decorated and had a great view of the city quay. Restaurant was excellent, we ended up eating there both nights. Parking was on site and once the V&A Museum is built this area will be a great place for a city break as near The Science Museum, Scott's Discovery and the shops in the city centre. Surprisingly good!
Review 119:Been a couple of times and can't find fault.
Review 120:The Staff helped me out when I lost property in a pub. They went out of their way to help and they retrieved my goods for me. Superb
Review 121:Room tariff could have included breakfast. Not to pay extra. Breakfast is really good even if you should pay for it.
Review 122:Close to downtown, short walk, lots of eating places, a shopping centre, pubs pretty much everything you need for your stay.
Review 123:We were kept awake until the early hours by noisy revellers returning to their rooms! We accept that the hotel cannot be blamed for this. We just wanted a good night's rest before a long journey home the following day!
Review 124:Clean and comfortable room overlooking the quay. Staff were efficient and helpful.
Review 125:What's not to like?
Review 126:Very helpful staff Comfortable room and bed Good shower with great towels Breakfast was ace! Location perfect for travel Value for money
Review 127:Very poor signage on building or direction to main entrance. Bar staff very unattentive
Review 128:Convenience of being close to city centre and having parking facilities
Review 129:Shower tap was a puzzle, as we have discovered in most of our stays in Britain. British shower tap systems vary and don't seem to have yet discovered the simplicity of a dual hot/cold tap with a single outlet. The implied abuse of the hotel by local guests as a boozer getaway. Man entered the lift with wine bottle and half glass he was drinking out of. Also, reception staff need an ergonomic seat they can leave and return to quickly without getting hurt. Phone wasn't responded to quickly enough owing to...? But once we spoke with anyone, our requested items arrived within 5 mins max. Baby European cockroach in room landed on parent's shoulder.
Review 130:Lovely, lovely, clean, soft-sneered, fluffy beds were a nice surprise after the industrial-grey, wannabe Wabi-Sabi corridors. Nice night view. Elevator. Bargain price for three. Nice staff at every stage.
The Fine Print
It is recommended that a restaurant table is booked before arrival, as both restaurants can be busy, especially during the weekend.
