Shaftesbury Lodge Guest House

Shaftesbury Lodge Guest House descritpion
On a quiet street with views over the River Tay and the park, the affordable Shaftesbury Hotel is close to the center of the city, university, Ninewells Hospital and main shopping area.
Many of the original features at the Shaftesbury remain, giving the building lots of character. The rooms are all very spacious; each is furnished differently. The bar is large enough for a good crowd, yet remains intimate.
A wide selection of malt whiskeys can be sampled in the Garden Bar. The hotel's license is restricted to residents only, so you can be sure of a quiet, relaxing evening.
Due to the age of the building, the Shaftesbury Hotel does not have an elevator.

Reviews for Shaftesbury Lodge Guest House
Review 1:A very warm welcome from the lovely Heather. A well appointed and clean ensuite room with a very comfortable bed. Copious free on-street parking, right on a main bus route into the city centre. Best hotel breakfast I've ever had with lots of choice and good portions. What more can you ask?
Review 2:Comfortable room and bed, delicious breakfast. Helpful with directions. Healthful 25 minute walk to Dundee center, bus available on rainy days. Taxi 6GBP or less from train station or town. Definitely recommend.
Review 3:Very nice place, convenient for the city centre. The people in the guest house is very helpful. The decoration is nice. Breakfast complete and many assortment.
Review 4:This Guest house is very close to where our son lives during term time. We can visit him without having to stay with him in an all boys student house!! The house was lovely and warm and extremely clean.
Review 5:Could do with extending breakfast times to 9.30 the existing 9.00 does not lead to a relaxing morning experience
Review 6:Good location with easy access to town centre.
Review 7:Quite disappointed with the fact that for the first time ever whilst staying at a lodge/guesthouse/ hotel (which we do often) we were not asked if we would like more tea/coffee or toast at breakfast time! Breakfast was very tasty but it was far from being a generous portion. During our stay my partner had poached egg on toast every morning, he was given two eggs on one small slice of toast. Considering the price we paid to stay there, overall we were quite disappointed with hospitality and breakfast, will not be staying there again.
Review 8:Location was good and bedroom was clean and comfortable.
Review 9:Very clean, freshly decorated and well chosen furnishings. The owner went out of her way to make us feel welcome and to help us. The smoked salmon for breakfast was top class.
Review 10:The wifi didn't work in our room, but we were able to get it ok in the living room. It's an older building that requires lots of tweaking for the wifi to work everywhere, apparently. Not a big issue.
Review 11:It's a nice location, an easy walk into the main part of the city and the restaurants, but enough away to feel quiet. the hostess (Heather) is very nice and accommodating and the breakfast was fine.
Review 12:We go to Dundee every year around the same time and always stay here if we can. Heather, the owner, is always very welcoming and the breakfast is the best!
Review 13:As with most European accommodation rooms are upstairs but owners help with luggage. Stairs are easily managed
Review 14:Great breakfast with lots of choices Close to bus stop and easy to find way around. Nice to have a luggage rack for suitcase
Review 15:The antique table and the chair were not the most suitable combination for a mini working desk.
Review 16:Heather is ultra friendly and helpful, and Malcom's omelettes are the reason why one would actually want to get out of bed! Bright and peaceful lounge that makes you want to come 'home' early, to have that 5 o'clock tea.
Review 17:This is a great guest house in a quiet, pleasant part of Dundee. It takes about 25 minutes to walk into the city centre or a few minutes in a car. With a friendly reception from the owners and their attention to detail, I'd rather stay in a place like this than a flash hotel downtown any day.
Review 18:The wifi would go on and off (no matter which of the 5 choices we selected) room 2 has a squeeky floorboard right at the toilet which announces your intentions at all times of the night!! The shower was more of a trickle of water, not helpful when you have long hair to wash. I should say these sorts of problems are to be expected in these old houses but not worth the money I paid I feel. Also the information said all rooms have DVD players, our room did not, (even though the info sheet in the room stated there was one too) this was a big disappointment as I had planned to surprise my fiancé with a DVD of old home movies for his birthday, which subsequently we could not watch.
Review 19:The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean.
Review 20:Shower was difficult to adjust -at correct temp it was very weak and only way to get stronger flow was to have temp up too high.
Review 21:Large three bed room was perfect for us and our adult daughter
Review 22:We really enjoyed our stay here, and would recommend the lodge to others. The view from our window were lovely, and the room comfortable and clean. The staff were really friendly and breakfast was excellent!
Review 23:No parking within the hotel, but outside parking is available on the street. The shower difficult to regulate, it's ether too hot or sometimes too cold.
Review 24:The staff are exceptionally nice. I enjoyed the breakfasts. The place is very clean and the room spacious and comfortable
Review 25:No private parking, but on-street parking is plentiful and safe.
Review 26:Generous breakfast, central heating and hot shower, reliable wifi, good choice of TV channels, short walk from some excellent restaurants, bars and pubs, quiet spot away from the student areas, but close enough to the city centre to walk in, plenty of on-street parking right outside, warm & comfortable room.
Review 27:Wifi was a little poor on signal (could have been my room) but got it working. My fault - I selected a single room & I'm getting too big for single beds / quilts!
Review 28:Pleasant owner, good location (short walk into town / university), quiet area and well equipped room. Really good, fresh breakfast. Quaint place and would definitely stay again.
Review 29:Quality of furnishing in room, quality of food at breakfast. A quite location in a side street, yet just 5 minutes walk to good selection of food/drink outlets.
Review 30:The shower!
Review 31:Very friendly owner and the room we stayed in was excellent - apart from the shower, which was overly hot and extremely difficult to get the temperature right. Nonetheless, I am sure that we will return to this delightful guesthouse in the future.
Review 32:Breakfast a teensy bit early (ends at 9 am) for a Sunday after a late night on Saturday
Review 33:Staff very welcoming Lovely big room , comfy bed, spotless, quiet. I didn't have breakfast so don't know but have heard its very good
Review 34:nothing
Review 35:Excellent hosts, good bed, good shower, good wifi, good breakfast and excellent quiet location with easy parking and a 5 min walk to the resteraunts,
Review 36:Because its an old building I understand that is not easy to maintain it or to add more facilities. A lift should be very helpful.
Review 37:Very polite and helpful staff. Good and quiet location and very nice breakfast.
Review 38:The bathroom is a little dated
Review 39:The location is excellent, it's close to good restaurants and a lovely old pub, the views from our room of the river Tay was also good, the bed was very comfortable, and breakfast was of a high standard and cooked to order.
Review 40:My stay in Shaftesbury Lodge was amazing! The staff is really kind, the rooms are very clean and the breakfast was excellent. Definitely recommend it!
Review 41:The Wi-Fi was a bit poky at times and couldn't carry multiple video calls well.
Review 42:The room was beautifully decorated and had lots of light and air. Pillows were comfy and duvet was snuggly. Hosts were so friendly and cheerful! Breakfast cooked to order and nothing prefab.
Review 43:Nothing it was excellent
Review 44:Christine Newcastle upon Tyne Lovely warm welcome, entrance is beautifully presented - everything thought of in bedrooms, extremely comfortable bed and excellent wi fi reception. Breakfast of an extremely high standard and check out a breeze
Review 45:I stayed for one night as I was collecting my son from one of the universities in Dundee and was travelling back to the Manchester area the next day. I chose this guest house because the reviews were good and I feel that hotels can lack the personal touch. I only actually met the lady who runs it but she was extremely helpful from my first point of contact, giving directions to several local restaurants and offering the use of an umbrella as it was raining and the restaurants were within walking distance. The room was a single, comfortable and well equipped. Breakfast was good with a variety of options. I have never been to Dundee before, but if ever I go back, I will choose to stay at this guest house again
Review 46:rattling windows in room 11 when windy but easily sorted with a folded serviette
Review 47:Third time at this Guest House and it has always been First Class. Comfortable, quiet and convenient. I will always stay here if I can on this annual business trip! Heather is the perfect hostess! Great breakfast.
Review 48:Nothing to report.

Review 50:My wife and I were helping my daughter settle into her new home in Dundee, the location was excellent for us and the staff were wonderfull and helpfull , we would definitly stay again when visiting.
Review 51:Had to leave!
Review 52:I stayed for 3 nights as a business traveller. I look forward to staying at Shaftesbury Lodge again next time I come to Dundee, for business or leisure. As a frequent traveller, I have stayed at many guesthouses and B&B's -- this is in my top two favorites. Great value for money, excellent friendly staff, and pleasant surroundings. Even in a budget single I had ample space, with a bathroom as large as the bedroom, plus a sliver of a view of the Tay. They regularly update and refresh rooms (comfortable beds, cheery paint), and their cleaning services are efficient and thorough. Grounds are well-landscaped. Both social and private relaxation are catered to, with a welcoming lounge area as well as bookshelves with collections of books and DVDs (with in-room DVD players!). A warm welcome from the owner-operator who shows a real regard for the good experience of every guest: she drew out each visitor at breakfast, asking about their day, and going out of her way to be alert to the needs of each guest. The cooked breakfast offered ample choices. Walking distance to the University of Dundee, and close to a park and the Tay. With long summer days I could meander on a pleasant walk by the water while heading back to the Lodge -- or take the main road with access to a local grocery, local library, and many businesses and shops. Very good bus/taxi option (which I didn't need to avail of!) as well as good signage from the main road. I see that Shaftesbury has a Scottish four-star guesthouse rating: it is well-deserved!
Review 53:The hotel experience was entirely positive. The rooms were clean, quiet and comfortable and the hotel is situated relatively close to the Dundee center. And of course the best was the Scottish breakfast, freshly made each morning.
Review 54:Everything was fantastic. I highly recommend staying here. The owners extremely friendly and welcoming - providing a range of things to do and see in Dundee and the surrounding areas. The room was brilliant - spacious, comfortable and clean!
Review 55:Not a thing.
Review 56:We were warmly greeted by our hostess the moment we arrived. Our rooms were clean and neat. We looked out each morning at the lovely garden in the backyard which whose gate led us to the beach beyond. Could not have been better. The excellent Scottish breakfast we enjoyed each day was delicious and cooked to order. If you are looking for a place to relax in a friendly beautiful setting - look no further.
