Reviews for Bannatyne's Charlton House Spa Hotel

Review 1:Beautiful surroundings and building with such a lovely laid back feel to it. The staff were friendly, informative and helpful at all times without being too invasive. The new gym is great! The spa so relaxing and the food delicious. Would definitely stay here again. Location wise, couldn't have been better. Brilliant!

Review 2:Rooms and lounge was cold.restaurant service was poor . Plus they didn't have many things on what looked like a fabulous menu. Hydro pool cold and steam room had so much eucalyptus my eyes burned.

Review 3:The rooms were comfortable and lounge area welcoming. Front desk staff and manger extremely welcoming and helpful.

Review 4:We were dissapointed with the general condition and upkeep of the building and whilst homely it seems to be back in time this is reflected in fittings etc. I would rate it at 3 star + maximum when compared with the others.

Review 5:It was ok for the wedding and the staff were very pleasent that made the day great

Review 6:The waitress in the morning at breakfast was unfriendly and curt. Crystal was her name, maybe she was having a bad day?

Review 7:Friendly staff and wonderful food and atmosphere

Review 8:Dining was busy due to Xmas party season, to be expected, however the party had obviously not been let out all year...

Review 9:Staff are great. Rooms and spa treatments wonderful.

Review 10:only the sauna was working during our visit so didnt get the full use of the spa facilities. Also we booked treatments before we arrived and nobody told us they were running a 60% off mid week promotion. After speaking to the reception they applied the discount to our treatments but should have told us up front.

Review 11:Room 26 was a nice size with 4 poster bed and private balcony over looking the gardens. Great selection

Review 12:I know the look of the hotel is supposed to be shabby chic, but the lounge looked shabby. Exposed damp areas on ceiling. Needs some loving care!

Review 13:We stayed in the Coach House. The room was lovely. The bathroom was rather shabby. The breakfasts were fantastic. Alot of choice.

Review 14:Shabby, worn out areas. First room had mould in bathroom and around window, flaking paint on walls, carpet stain both in room and hallway. Disappointing first impression. No tongs to self serve breakfast pastries, luke warm breakfast on one morning, despite several requests for a runny fried egg they always turned up dry :( more staff needed to service breakfast...tables left uncleared, not set in time for arriving guests.

Review 15:Upgraded to a lovely room. Clean and comfy stay. Location was good for Bath. Wells cathedral and Vicars Close worth a visit. Friendly staff. Spa facilities were small but adequate.

Review 16:The evening meal was nice and reasonably priced but the portions were ridiculously small. This was the only disappointing aspect of our stay as the restaurant has good reviews but we thought it was mediocre at best (and we never complain about anything!)

Review 17:Excellent friendly and helpful staff especially at reception. Lovely comfortable bed, facilities etc.

Review 18:Pillows were too soft for me I'm afraid! Also plugs not near a mirror and lead on kettle very short!

Review 19:Welcome received was excellent, quirkiness of the hotel decor, breakfast and lounge area.

Review 20:We had a very unwelcome reception from the male on reception. The carpet was dirty in our room. The place needs a complete revamp! Due to thiis we had our evening meal in town at an Italian restaurant as we also didn't like the atmosphere after a very cold unwelcoming arrival after travelling for two and a half hours!

Review 21:We had an attic room which was very cold. Dinner was expensive and small! Charity donation was added to hotel bill, which although discretionary, is hard to refuse and I don't like that I am expected to donate.

Review 22:Lovely old house with good spa facilities, excellent massage. Breakfast and dinner were delicious. Large car park

Review 23:Noisy main road. Cold pokey room in the attick with small windows. Dodgy decor. Dangerous tennis court surface. Unusable. Covered in very slippery moss. So dangerous.

Review 24:Nice staff

Review 25:The room we stayed in was quite a dark room, it had very little natural daylight. Although the breakfast was delicious, the menu lacked variety.

Review 26:Location is lovely, just a walk away from local restaurants and shops. The cleaner was lovely and friendly and did a superb job every day. Food is delicious but portions are so small and you don't exactly get value for money. Most nights we went to the local restaurants/pubs.

Review 27:The staff, the position, the food and overall comfort. we love to stay any chance of some discount.

Review 28:Enjoyed the whole experience, cant understand why any one would complain about this hotel, but one guest was complaining about the breakfast pastries, a little over cooked but others were made available, some guest are never happy and are always looking for discount, would love to stay again Regards Phil brewer

Review 29:Only downsides were a £50.00 debit was taken from my card on arrival. This was not deducted from the bill and to date I'm still waiting for the refund, which Reception said would happen. In addition, we befriended some other guests and the 4 of us sat down for dinner together but wanted seperate bills. This seemed to be impossible for the staff who wanted to bill the table but as we each wanted to add the cost to our room, in the end they split the bill their way which meant in the end we each ended up paying for someone else's meal.

Review 30:The food quality was excellent, both for the Dinner in the Restaurant and Breakfast. The staff in the main were very helpful, particularly on Reception.

Review 31:Our room was supposed to be an upgrade, I am really pleased that Ididn't get the room which we had originally paid for. The décor inour bedroom was tired, it had the 1930's style, probably lastdecorated back then too. Our en-suite was large but there was a bath(nice bath) which was unnecessarily placed in the middle of thebathroom and the shower looked dirty with mould around the edges andwas approximately the size of a small cupboard (got photos). It wasraised and the entrance was right by the window which looks over thecar park and no frosted glass. Unfortunately, my voyeurism days areover and like my privacy, Finally the vegetarian options in therestaurant were a lot less than what is shown on the website.Thankfully we only stayed one night.

Review 32:The staff were excellent, very helpful and polite, the restaurant andbar staff were attentive and didn't leave us waiting to have ourorder taken

Review 33:I have dietary restrictions, in that I am vegan and gluten free. The staff in the restaurant seemed unable grass this. For breakfast I was offered cake (stage in itself) that contained both eggs and butter upon rejecting this, the waitress suggested toast (not gluten free) and for her ors suggestion maybe I should try the gluten free sausage (which contained pork). Upon mentioning this to the front of house staff at checkout we were informed that the restaurant has a vegan menu and all we needed to do was ask next time, odd because we did ask this time! The standard of service is not really what I have come to expect in hotels of this price bracket.

Review 34:The Spa is an excellent place to relax, great lounge and outdoor facilities, Large rooms maybe in need of a little TLC.

Review 35:Staff in the restaurant and serving are useless. Never cleared tables, mess everywhere and not a at all attentive. Their uniform looked dirty. When you are there for a two day break and we spent £890 you expect a different level of service. very disappointing. The spa is also dirty. Cobwebs, dead mites and spiders on the ledges and general dirt. Such a shame. Plus no plates and drinks were cleared there either. Real shame.

Review 36:Loved the location and it's absolutely stunning. Room very clean and the housekeeping and front of house staff are fabulous.

Review 37:The bathroom needed a bit of TLC and a paint, though the rainfall shower was great. Fresh fruit at breakfast would have been nice.

Review 38:It's a great hotel, slightly quirky with friendly staff. Our room was a good size for the price and was quiet and comfortable. We appreciated the complimentary bottles of water and tea making facilities. The breakfast was tasty too.

Review 39:Small room and not able to use facilities which was not evident when booking and the only reason for going there. Made it a very expensive B&B.

Review 40:The location and setting were great

Review 41:Beautiful hotel with stunning rooms & an amazing spa. Staff were always accommodating & helpful. Spa staff were kind & professional. Will be staying again & recommending to friends & family. Little slice of paradise!

Review 42:Room 14 was a little dark and the bathroom wasn't great. There was also a bit of mould in the bathroom in room 22.

Review 43:Room 22 was absolutely incredible. So spacious. Breakfast was very good and the spa was very relaxing - excellent massages and the girls are very friendly. All the staff were really great and very accommodating.

Review 44:Had a lovely laid back feel - very comfortable and welcoming. Spa is lovely and very relaxing. We had room 6 Narnia - a tasteful room overlooking the gardens. Breakfast was great and had a very pleasant meal in the restaurant although the portions are rather small! I ordered fish which was almost cold when it arrived - I wouldn't normally complain but it's not a cheap meal and this was soon rectified by the chef. A very enjoyable stay, loved the spa and will definitely be back.

Review 45:Room was poor , hand basin cracked . old tv with trailing wires , carpet dirty . not shabby chic just shabby Paid £120 for this hugely over priced , 3 stories up , no lift , no outside fire escape from top floor would not stay there again felt ripped of

Review 46:Restaurant & staff were excellent

Review 47:The property is an old period style which is nice but certain areas require a paint and little things need repairing. One of the bathrooms had bare plaster where the towel rail had been moved and not repainted. A light bulb had blown before our arrival and had not been replaced. A chair had been badly repaired in our room and as subsequence broke again during our use. The window did not open in the bathroom which resulted in the room steaming up during baths and showers; the extractor fan did not circulate or remove steam/air sufficiently enough. Once again we understand and appreciate this is an old property but these issues are due to a lack of maintenance and could be simply rectified especially given the price of a stay would expect a little more of a polished finish.

Review 48:The location and the setting is really nice. The facilities are good, with spa pool steam room and sauna. The rooms are of a good size with feature you would expect but no extra little surprises.

Review 49:The only 2 points I would make if any would be, one of the girls on reception seemed a bit moody to be working in hospitality. The other minor point was that the showers in the men's spa changing rooms seemed to have been positioned for very small people (and I'm not even 6 foot!)

Review 50:Relaxed atmosphere. Very good customer service. Excellent spa facilities. Very good all round and would definitely return.

Review 51:The place needs a real clean up and redecoration! We visited last year and again this year - shame to see some of the things such a dirty spa cushions and loose door handles had not been fixed.

Review 52:Lovely setting - very comfortable ;relaxed staff accommodating ;loved the different rooms; breakfast was lovely. Lots to see and do if you have a car!

Review 53:The restaurant was poor and very overpriced for dinner - £10 for a bottle of water.. £50 a head for dinner and drinks (non alcholic). Starter was inedible, main course was tiny. Had to order the cheeseboard as still hungry after the meal and nowhere else in the local area to eat.

Review 54:The Staff were lovely and the room was comfortable

Review 55:Irritating "optional" charity donation on final invoice. Also, although I accept we booked the cheapest room (we were visiting family and not necessarily using the Hotel's spa facilities which are its main attraction) it was very small for the price and didn't even include a biscuit with your cup of tea! Finally, the gym does not seem to open until 09h00 on any day - late on a Sunday, very late on a weekday

Review 56:Breakfast very good with interesting included options; good night's sleep; staff were welcoming and friendly;

Review 57:Excellent service-all staff were superb. Character of hotel-everything seemed individual and all rooms were different. Food in restaurant was very good indeed.

Review 58:Service at breakfast was atrocious. Waited 30 mins for a re-fill of tea and some extra toast. Some people walked out whilst waiting so long for service.

Review 59:Food when it arrived was superb. Bar is cosy with a lovely fire on the go. The spa is delightful.

Review 60:Hotel now shabby, not shabby chic! Food disappointing; sent both lunch and dinner meal back, including dessert! Menu uninspiring!

Review 61:Staff were brilliant!

Review 62:Terrible service where our drinks were forgotten for 30 mins in an empty bar with 2 bar staff. We waited 40 mins after being called to our table for dinner, where My medium rare steak (at an £8 surcharge )came well done, my husbands pasta poor and my mousse for dessert was room temperature and chewy. We ordered a bottle of water on room service which was forgotten. On reminding them on reception it was brought up and thrust into my hand without glasses. Our wedding anniversary was ruined and all the manager would do was remove the charge for the food we couldn't eat. No suggestion of a voucher towards a discount for our next visit or even a discount off our drinks bill as an apology. My overall opinion is that the staff do as they please and don't care in this boutique luxury spa hotel. Such a shame!

Review 63:Quality of furnishings, decor, comfort. Beautiful grounds and gorgeous spa.

Review 64:The dressing gown & slippers were not big enough for my partner. The coffee in the room

Review 65:The way all the staff coped with the power cut on 5/1 & had no kitchen facilities. The chef did a great job with the cold buffet. All the staff were very friendly & nothing was too much trouble especially Julian & the bar staff. The breakfast was superp. We love the style of the rooms. The spa facilities are excellent.

Review 66:We had no heating in our room but they provided oil heaters. We didn't like leaving our beautiful room.

Review 67:The spa facilities were great especially the outside jacuzzi.

Review 68:unable to book massage on arrival already booked out for Christmas

Review 69:weather was very kind! sunshine in October! ensuite disabled accessable shower2nd bathroom upstairs all fittings super quality direct access to hottub and spa through courtyard quiky furniture made for room a bed to dream on !!!! reception staff very helpful

Review 70:The service at the restaurant was a bit slow, that's our only negative!

Review 71:Everything was great! We loved our stay at this hotel, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is beautiful, and the spa facilities excellent. The staff at the spa were great, discreet, and very professional.

Review 72:Bedroom Adam & Eve a bit tired TV built into wall cupboard a bit way out

Review 73:Highest standard of presentation and excellent quality VG wine selection

Review 74:A fly fell in to my first cup of tea in the lounge !! The stairs to my first room were too steep for me (Pigeons loft )! That's about it really...

Review 75:I liked the warm welcome, the staff were very helpful when I asked to change rooms to a more accessible one (no stairs to climb) and the treatment I had in the Spa was 1st. class. The food was choice and very well presented and the room service was excellent. All in all it was a very happy visit to this Hotel - I would like to visit again..

Review 76:There was an issue with the pool while we were there but didn't really detract from our stay

Review 77:Everything - lovely atmosphere, staff and very relaxing

Review 78:Had 2 massages each for 30 minutes first with Laura excellent second with Katie only lasted 20 minutes!

Review 79:Ambience helpful staff lovely room gardens staff

Review 80:The Bannatyne Grp should be ashamed. It is clear that the hotel has been very neglected, £200 a night for stains on the carpet, broken radiator covers, cheap synthetic dressing gowns which were also stained, missing bits off things. Not even the cooked breakfast could save the day, unless you were on a diet - I just don't have enough space to go on...needless to say we will not be staying again or recommending. Who are they trying to kid.

Review 81:The staff were excellent and very attentive - I do not want my negative comments detract from this.

Review 82:No main pool for swimming

Review 83:The food was amazing and very reasonably priced. Spa facilities The Small double we booked was twice the size we expected and wes full of charm

Review 84:being disturbed by fellow residents at 3am in the morning slamming doors and being drunk trying to enter our room

Review 85:being able to relax in a dressing gown and have spa treatments

Review 86:The road noise Poor phone signal Poor wifi signal The kitchen staff The cost of the food and drink £9 for 1 run and coke? Made no effort to make honeymoon special.

Review 87:Rooms where comfortable

Review 88:can't think of anything we didn't like.

Review 89:accommodation was lovely. food was excellent. we didn't use the spa facilities, so cannot comment on that. all processes were smooth, but it was a little pricey. the fairly remote location was a nice getaway, but if that's not what you're looking for, you may not find it the most convenient.

Review 90:We really enjoyed the comfort of our South Wing room. Dinner was excellent, staff attentive and helpful. Full body massage and the Spa facilities definitely added to our lovely relaxed get away rest holiday. Will be back most certainly

Review 91:Dining. Very expensive for very ordinary quality food presented fancily. Style over substance unfortunately. Stuck to the bar menu, much better value for money.

Review 92:Rooms, Spa, country house feel

Review 93:initial room was small stuffy and hot

Review 94:moved rooms to a larger room which met all expectations. Dinner was also excellent. A relaxing stay. reception staff and restaurant manager were both a credit to a good hotel

Review 95:We felt the place was a little tired , especially the very old crinkled rugs everywhere , which seemed to be a bit of a tripping hazard.

Review 96:The reception area is very nice and oldie worldie . The bathroom in our room was upstairs and was lovely ,nice room & comfortable bed . The staff were very friendly and helpful .The breakfast food was very nice although we did have a bit of a wait after putting order in .

Review 97:Location of our room was right by the spa, often could hear people walking past our room loudly.
