Reviews for Cromwell Hotel Stevenage

Review 1:Shower in the bath, my personal preference is a separate shower. Tea and coffee in the room but no bottled water.

Review 2:Nice room, good location, staff pleasant.

Review 3:Small stay but friendly helpful staff. Helped us out with scissors to sort out our wedding outfits for our sons wedding. Strange places where they put labels missed a few. Grateful to reception staff who came to our rescue.

Review 4:I was able to draw a line in the built up dust in the carpet in our room. Fluff had built up all around the edges. There was a damp patch damage to one corner of the wall. The curtain pelmet appeared furry with the build up of dust and cobwebs.

Review 5:The lady on reception was extremely lovely , helpful and went beyond what would be expected to look after us.

Review 6:Did not tell us there was a function on n my elderly mother had to the walk across a carpark in the dark n damp to come back into the hotel if we stayed in the disabled room which was so far away she became out of breath just getting to the room when we were shown before the event started. So we had to go on the first floor which was nearer but no lift. The room was right above the function n noisey and the walls thin. Children allowed to run around the corridors late at night. Food at night was appalling very little choice due to the holiday period they said they had not got much food in because of it. Also because of the event they seem to cater more for that than hotel guests. Bare minimum staff when we arrived the poor girl on reception was trying to do three jobs. The hotel seemed diserted not a friendly or Christmasy atmosphere at all. All cleaners hoovering while you were having breakfast and mopping a lobby floor whilst people were coming in for breakfast at bottom of the stairs. Rooms needed proper hoovering and they had put a cheap plastic toilet seat (which was broken ) on a decent bathroom suite. Shower was nearly cold. The free wifi that was suppose to work in the entire hotel didn't work in the lounge at all in the bedroom very intermittently only worked in a downstairs toilet lol.

Review 7:It was on the high street n close to shops etc

Review 8:We have a 9week old daughter and were given a room on the 1st floor. With there being no lift it was havoc carrying the pram up and down the stairs.

Review 9:Lovely hotel

Review 10:Double room was in fact 2 singles pushed together therefore a twin room rather than a double. Sleeping with the beds separating half way through the night was uncomfortable.

Review 11:Great location. Very friendly staff, clean room.

Review 12:Room looked tired, it looks like some have been refurbished but the room I was given is past its sell by date, maybe they give these rooms to people who book through Booking.com, breakfast room was also very tired looking with tables that wobbled and were very sticky. Breakfast staff were not at all interested in guests either

Review 13:hot water sometimes unreliable, had to use the same toileteries for 5 days - soap, shampoo etc, wifi unreliable.coffee cups sometimes not changed ...

Review 14:Location and breakfast

Review 15:Bathroom cold water tap faulty and the toilet seat unsafe. Cheese slate very poor value, iffy grapes, no butter and soft crackers

Review 16:Quiet and comfy room

Review 17:Toiletries were not renewed after 1st day, for 5 days that's a bit much. Wi-Fi is not great. Tends to host a lot of external meetings and no where to park in customer car park

Review 18:Location

Review 19:Room given, (125) was really only a single but was described as Double. Small room with single wardrobe and only one bedside table.

Review 20:The location is good being on the Old Town high street.

Review 21:Loose toilet seat, taps and toilet roll holder. No hot water for shower/bath and had to leave the tap running for a long time to get lukewarm water. Had to clear our table at breakfast!

Review 22:Excellent location for us as we were attending a family event near by. Rooms were comfortable and plenty of tea and coffee in room.

Review 23:Light shining in bedroom all night. Curtains needed a pelmet.

Review 24:Nice comfortable bed. Extra pillows if required. Nice to have ironing board and hairdryer.

Review 25:Room was noisy as it faced on to the main road and there was a bar playing loud music till 4am! Water in shower was warm but not hot.

Review 26:Room was nice, characterful and had plenty of tea and coffee

Review 27:I found a hole in my bedsheet and some of the public toilets weren't particularly pleasant. View of 5 biffa bins from my room.

Review 28:Bathroom in my room was nice.

Review 29:The weather - but that was not the hotel's fault.

Review 30:The beds were the most comfortable I have slept in for a long while. The staff were more than helpful. The breakfast and room service were excellent. Private parking a bonus as it can be difficult to find parking in the town.

Review 31:Room was a lot smaller than we booked, bed squashed in a corner, making it very difficult to get out of bed on the wall side. No lifts in the building, this is not well advertised and caused problems for immobility.

Review 32:Welcoming staff, so helpful.

Review 33:Full English breakfast was a bit on the small side with its 1 rasher of bacon and a cocktail sausage.

Review 34:The bed was very wide and the staff were excellent.

Review 35:Room 114 pretty mediocre for the cost and a bit below what I expected. Toilet seat was low quality and poorly fixed, staff advised on check out.

Review 36:Good Internet service and availability of on site free car parking.

Review 37:the bed had 2 protectors on the mattress on closer inspection the reason was the mattress springs are close to ripping the material..it needs dumping in a skip....most uncomfortable night booked out at 7.30 am..as could not sleep in the bed.

Review 38:warm hotel for the cold weather...nice

Review 39:Needed more staff. Checking in took long time. Checking out the kitchen staff helped out. The breakfast room was just the dance floor in a large uninviting room. Very cold and dirty. The fllor needed a good sweep and mop.

Review 40:We slept really well and staff very helpful.

Review 41:Tatty in places, nearly fell down the stairs as stair runner was missing, and the guy in the next room was shouting all night..... random

Review 42:The reception staff were ace and the breakfast was nice... if not a bit disorganised.

Review 43:Very small complaint, hairdryer wire too short to stretch to the mirror!

Review 44:The staff were so helpful and friendly. Nothing was a bother to them and room was clean and bright.

Review 45:No bad experience. Would have liked a shelf or shelves in the bathroom to put wash bag etc on. Had to use the floor. Appreciated coffee & biscuits in room.

Review 46:Excellent staff on arrival & departure

Review 47:The breakfast price and content was a shock! Listed at GBP 13.95 on the menu, although you did have a choice what you wanted to include on the cooked breakfast, I expected a little more than a table spoon of baked beans on my plate! The food was not very hot and the toaster either undercooked or burned the toast. Not very good when a full English Breakfast was on offer 2 doors down at the pub for 5.79.

Review 48:All the service staff, from front desk to the restaurant, were helpful, efficient and polite. The room was clean and fresh.

Review 49:We were located in "the depths" of Room 321, which had only one route out, a long walk out to Reception. A more convenient exit to the car park would have been a big improvement at that end of the hotel. Breakfast was too dear, compared to alternatives.

Review 50:Lovely large room, at a very good price. Great location in the old town, so easy access to pubs, restaurants and other amenities. Very pleased with hotel.

Review 51:nothing

Review 52:loved the hotel and location was perfect room was lovely clean and bed was comfortable , was good price for the night and just what we looked for if in Stevenage would use this hotel again for sure

Review 53:We were locked out of our room two days in a row, and the internet connection was very very poor. The view out of the window was not good at all.

Review 54:My wife n I really enjoyed the hotel's restaurant food at Oliver's Restaurant and we enjoyed the room's heating.

Review 55:The hot water tap in the bathroom basin was very loose. Required both hands to operate it, one to hold the tab, the other to turn it on or off!! Toilet roll holder was hanging off the wall.

Review 56:A clean spacious room with a very comfortable bed. Useful iron and board.

Review 57:The bar staff need to be trained on people skills and to listen to what their customers are ordering so that one doesn't have to keep repeating what is wanted.

Review 58:The receptionist was very pleasant and helpful. Always nice to have a warm welcome.

Review 59:The fire alarm randomly went off at 9am on Sunday morning - apparently a malfunctioning toaster. Annoying but not trip-ruining!

Review 60:The staff were so lovely and helpful. This is a much bigger hotel than I thought - the rooms at the back are new and well-proportioned. Book an accessible room if you have a wheelchair - they have separate entrances onto the carpark. The room was everything we needed as a crashpad post a wedding - bath, superking bed, lots of space. We didn't even set foot in the rest of the hotel so can't comment on food etc.

Review 61:In our first stay the older room was not as comfortable as second stay when we had a new room.

Review 62:Location in Stevenage old town. The second stay we were in the new rooms which were fantastic

Review 63:First time that I had stayed at the Cromwell for years, though the hotelstill has great standing, the only thing I didnt like is that breakfastwas served in a function hallbecause of a large group that was stayingin the hotel, I thought that they should have served breakfast to thatgroup in the function room and should of left orher guests to eat in thenormal breakfast room.

Review 64:The room was scruffy, the discrepancy between the better rooms and the not so good is getting greater, we have stayed there many times over the last year and this was the first disappointment

Review 65:The staff were very helpful and obliging the room and facilities werefirst class and as was the overall experience. Would like to thank thereception staff for going out of their was to locate and item I had leftbehind. I would certainly recommend the Cromwell Hotel and hope to useagain, thank you

Review 66:BREAKFAST FRIED EGG BURNT , ROOM CLEAN BUT HAD SAME ROOM 6 MONTHS AGO AND DUST STILL ON ALL THE TRIMS IN BATHROOM , YET BEDROOM DUSTED WELL, ROOM 205

Review 67:STAFF REALLY GOOD . ROOM CLEAN . QUIET SO GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP , LOVELY BAR.

Review 68:In spite of the fact we booked room months before our visit - we were allocated room 322 a very long haul from reception and only entrance/exit to hotel. Painting and renovation was in progress and damp/musty atmosphere in the corridors leading to our room. Taxi fares to and from Hitchin would indicate a much further distance than 3.5 miles as claimed on website.

Review 69:Convenient for high street shops

Review 70:the hotel is a bit tired and needs some work on it. the hot tap in our room moved around when you tried to turn it on or off reported it no one came to fix it for us.

Review 71:the room was sub standard for the cost, there was ongoing decorating (refurbishment) & no warning signs of wet paint

Review 72:the staff were excellent & very helpful

Review 73:Disabled and a double bed?? I spent the night in a chair!!!

Review 74:The staff were excellent. Room very good. Bathroom well equipped for disabled but bed inappropriate

Review 75:Very grumpy receptionist! Also, the walls are quite thin so could hear people next door laughing and watching loud TV late at night! Called the reception to inform them about the noise but was told by Mr Grumpy that it is normal to have neighbours in a hotel! Ha!

Review 76:Very comfortable bed, clean room and delicious food at the restaurant.

Review 77:Ripped chairs in room, Taps loose in bathroom, TV unwatchable from the bed had to sit in ripped old chair, tired looking room, asked at reception about the issues, just shrugged and said sorry about! Not really good enough won't stay again

Review 78:Breakfast was good.

Review 79:Staff totally disinterested. We had about a dozen words in total. Breakfast food was just about adequate but the level of service and the ambience by some way the worst I've experienced in many hotels across the world in several years.

Review 80:Nostalgia - I knew this hotel many many years ago when it had a high reputation.

Review 81:Room was dark, dated and seedy. Looked nothing like the photos! Staff unfriendly and breakfast was a complete disaster! It was messy, lack of food and who wants to share a table of 10 first thing in the morning?

Review 82:Breakfast. Size of the room was ridiculous. Could reach all 4 walls from the bed. 15 man brawl outside the hotel in the early hours also. As well as chavs on scooters at all hours.

Review 83:Not much, the shower was very good.

Review 84:The noise from the street during the night was dreadful. Friday night must be party night in Stevenage Old town.

Review 85:A lovely building, good parking and a spacious room. Breakfast was very nice.

Review 86:Breakfast needs looking at, bacon very hard to chew, not freshly cooked, no fried eggs. Dining room gloomy, could do with a freshen up, as could our room decor. Best mattress we've slept on ever !

Review 87:Size of our room was good, also very clean, bed very comfortable.

Review 88:we had a six hour journey to the Cromwell. On Friday night there was a function until 3.30 am, below our room impossible to sleep - Sunday morning the breakfast room was in a disgusting state food on the floor - in high chairs and on tables had to request refills of beverages and food there was a general lack of attention.

Review 89:We visited in May of this year and, although found the decor 'tired' we were satisfied with the experience we decided to re-book this July and bought family with us.......

Review 90:First room the lights did not work. Second room curtains did not draw properly and overlooked waste bins. Poor facilities in bathroom. In general the hotels decoration was poor ie paper hanging off the walls and net curtains torn. Also poor lighting in car park where I tripped .

Review 91:Our room overlooked the High Street which was very noisy till 3.00am on the first night, luckily there was heavy rain on the second night which stopped people shouting outside the venue opposite. Secondary glazing would help.

Review 92:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean.

Review 93:Fan noise in room 103 at midnight. Probably from central extraction and ventilation system in services area on the roof outside the window

Review 94:Central location Very helpful friendly staff

Review 95:When I went to check in I was waiting 15 mins noone was to be seen anywhere but was apologised toby the nice lady who works there, no safe in the room, only one mug for tea and coffee, the mattress gave me a bad back but that is just me personally because the mattress was firm enough for me.

Review 96:Location, clean, well presented layout, cosiness in room.

Review 97:Wifi didn't work in my room 208 but did in public areas. Had a problem with hot water in shower, maintenance were on it as a reported.

Review 98:Room size was great. TV and comfort of room was great. Larry bathroom.

Review 99:Water stains on the bedroom ceiling, wallpaper coming off the wall. Wardrobe door had come off the hinges Window stay was broken so you could not secure the window if you wanted to open it. Bar staff were inadequate and one girl rude..

Review 100:The reception staff were polite and helpful

Review 101:The breakfast was over cooked , not very good quality , no tea coffee served, not much choice for fresh fruit etc

Review 102:Staff very helpful , courteous , bed rooms ok , although little tired

Review 103:No bedside tables and noisy aircon right outside window (room 122). "DIRTY" written inside of bathroom window, not cleaned for months.

Review 104:Location.

Review 105:The numbering of the rooms and directions on the wall in the hotel are very poor

Review 106:The location of the hotel is fantastic if you are going out in the town or staying in old town and getting around and about. We were assisted by a make staff member who was excellent and very helpful.

Review 107:I recommend to guests to double check if you order a taxi because my taxi was late and they forgot and I nearly missed my bus.. The room was a bit too hot and stufft and the window didnt open very much.

Review 108:Free wifi, good location and good service.

Review 109:Staff didn't seem to know what they were doing at check in and I had to go find someone when I checked out. Shower didn't have hot water and was so filled with lime scale barely any water came out.

Review 110:Comfy bed

Review 111:Some of the rooms had an old decor and carpet in strong garish colours, which I didn't like, but I ended up staying in one with neutral furnishings, which was lovely. Bed was a bit on the soft side but extremely comfortable.

Review 112:Manager Mitchell? was a great help and provided outstanding customer service. I didn't like the decor of the first room I was given, which was different from what had been advertised, and the manager showed me a couple of rooms before I chose one I really liked. Bathroom was spotless and looked very new. Tea/coffee and biscuits were a nice touch. I got a room for just over £50 per night on a deal through this website, which was an excellent deal. Tried to extend my stay but significantly more expensive on weekdays. Simple but lovely, I would highly recommend a stay here.

Review 113:Small room, too warm, no seating area in room.Ipad would not connect to internet whilst laptop was connected. Hole cut out of carpet then patch placed over.

Review 114:The location

Review 115:Badly cracked sink with very sharp edges ! Tap not connected to the sink ! wobbling about in its hole! Drawer hanging off its hinges ! Stool - dangerously wobbly- with one leg about to fall off ! Splashes across the ceiling !!

Review 116:Whole hotel including the room was grubby and would have benefitted from some maintenance, decorating and a good clean. Furniture and carpets were well worn and should have been replaced ages ago.

Review 117:The location was good. Easily accessible from motorway. Carpark was good size with plenty of room.

Review 118:Complicated walk to room ( not so much the length more the route, thank goodness for the change of carpet colour! Blue on the right track). Poor wifi Need to address brown round plug hole & toilet needs stains removing.

Review 119:Friendly, helpful staff!

Review 120:Pillows too hard and shame that other hotel customers stood outside my room talking at 5am, more at 6am etc no consideration for others!

Review 121:Bed was comfy. Bath was small but nicer than shower!

Review 122:Nothing - it was great!

Review 123:A very nice historic building with charm and character set in the historic Stevenage 'Old Town'. Central to plenty of friendly bars and restaurants.

Review 124:All staff were very courteous including the chambermaids who we say in the corridor, spoke to say hello. Was perfect location for where we needed to be. Will definitely return.

Review 125:Breakfast: we had to ask for serving dishes to be replenished several times the second morning. Our room was not serviced on the second day - quite lax and the bathroom was not as clean as it should have been. Only one mug for drinks and this was chipped and stained.

Review 126:The front of house staff were attentive. Breakfast was good the first morning.

Review 127:Decorating was dark and a bit worn in parts. It needs some TLC.

Review 128:The room was at a special rate which made it good value. Full price would have been too much. I thought that it was a Clarion hotel when I booked but apparently this group had been left a couple of weeks prior to my booking.

Review 129:Bathroom sink was cracked; loo didn't always flush; lamps didn't work properly. Breakfast a rip-off. Wetherspoons sell breakfast down the road for 2.99

Review 130:Mugs, glasses and spoons were all dirty, the mugs had dried milk stuck to them the spoons had tea stains and the glasses were covered in marks. The beds were extremely uncomfortable, the springs poke into your back all night, making it unbearable. It takes about half an hour to check in even though there is no queue?! I complained on the morning I checked out and was told a manager would contact me....still waiting!!! I wouldn't bother wasting the money, I would have been better off sleeping in the airport.

Review 131:It was a roof over our heads at night.

Review 132:A long up and down walk to our room and a silly price for breakfast when there are many other breakfast restaurants within a couple of minute's walk.

Review 133:Great parking right in the centre of Old Stevenage. Lots of pubs, restaurants & shops

Review 134:Very worn out carpets, tap completely loose on basin. Windows not latched, could have fallen out as I opened it. Not enough staff..all at function. Bar left with lots of dirty glasses. One girl gave me half a cup of coffee"...said machine only did this?

Review 135:Not much

Review 136:No lifts for disabled people, breakfast expensive, room 108's window doesn't close completely and you can hear the music from the pub down the road till 3am

Review 137:Price, locations and overall feeling about the hotel.

Review 138:I paid with cash on arrival but was charged via my credit card which Ifound out 2 days later. This incurred phone bill charges to both mycredit card company and to the hotel. A sarcastic male individual saidhe would look into it although with his tone I won't hold my breath. This is a lot of money to lose when I thought I was getting a good rate.

Review 139:The big bed. Location - so many eateries and tesco outside the hotel.
