Reviews for The Springfield
Review 1:There was a very strange smell in the room - as if someone had been smoking in it before and a can of air freshener was emptied to try and rid it of the smell. This meant that we had to have the window open so that the smell could try and dissipate and it made some of the evening quite unpleasant.
Review 2:The room was very spacious and the house itself was very quiet. For the amount we paid, it was a fair price. The owner was very helpful in giving advice as to where we can go and eat in the evening.
Review 3:The property could do with an external light above the front door.
Review 4:The owners were very friendly, the room was lovely and clean and the breakfast was tasty.
Review 5:My partner and I stayed at the Springfield on a Saturday night. The heating was already on in the room when we arrived, forward planning comes to mind as it was snowing lightly. On close inspection everything that a traveller requires is catered for, including an iron and an ironing board. Plenty of tea and coffee and biscuits are provided free of charge. The room is well decorated with the added feature of the original stone work exposed. The bathroom may be a little small for some but still had all the facilities required, the shower was to die for, powerful and lovely and warm, it took me 20 mins to get out that's how good it was. Having overindulged in local hostelries the previous evening I was looking forward to our breakfast and we were not disappointed. A vast selection of cereals are on offer with fresh juices also available. Waiting to order breakfast the aroma from the kitchen was wetting our appetite and we were not disappointed when our breakfast was served. The breakfast consisted of freshly cooked rashers (two) of bacon, sausage, black pudding, mushrooms, tomato, beans and an cooked any way you wished. There was also tea/coffee and toast on offer. Well done Danielle we would certainly recommend the Springfield to anyone wishing to stay in Rothbury. Give her a call for special rates you won't be disappointed.
Review 6:It's a place I would keep going back to staff are friendly and helpful. Beds well I asked if I could take the bed home it was that comfortable. Breakfast was lovely lots to choose from. Could not fault at all.
Review 7:Had to phone from the doorstep as they couldn't hear the bell!
Review 8:Very friendly & helpful, though it was obviously out of season. Excellent breakfast. Next to a pub with good beer & food.
Review 9:Bit of a dodgy water system.. Hot water ran out quick and flush a bit flimsy on loo..but didn't spoil our stay. Also a little bit of a squash in breakfast room..
Review 10:Such a friendly welcome, very helpful couldnt do enough to make sure we relaxed.
Review 11:On arrival there was nobody home, I called the number given and was told my room number and also someone would be in touch, 2 hours later no one had spoken to me. 7.30am shower was only giving warm water. Television provided is on the way out as the picture was poor and continually changed colours.
Review 12:I liked the price but glad I hadn't paid anymore. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast was okay for the money.
Review 13:The welcome we received, the friendliness of everyone, the comfort of the bedroom, the excellent breakfast and the location. We had never been to Northumberland before, but our experience here means we will be back.
Review 14:The bed was most uncomfortabl, I found the bed to be too soft - like being devoured by a marshmallow. My wife had to spend the first night sleeping on the couch, since she has a back problem. The mattrass topper was found to be a two inch layer of foam.
Review 15:Staff were very friendly and helpful. Location is excellent and Rothbury a very pleasant place to visit. Nearby restaurants were excellent. Breakfast provided by the guest house were wonderful
Review 16:Noise from toilet systems and it took several flushes to work. Mould around shower edges/corners is just poor cleaning.
Review 17:Nice room, great breakfast. Friendly staff.
Review 18:nobody at accommodation to greet us, message to contact her by telephone in the hall, which didn't work. used own phone, told which room was ours, but didn't meet anyone until breakfast. no idea what time breakfast would be served of where the breaskfast room was.bright orange bathroom, light bulbs missing, very soft bed, noisy toilet
Review 19:The orange bathroom. Too bright! Twin room was a double room with sofa bed which wasn't that comfortable. The double bed was apparently though!!
Review 20:Lovely people and really helpful. Went over and above the line of duty.
Review 21:No one there to show the rooms - keys left at reception. Room 4 was verydamp / mould in the bathroom. Smelt damp, slow to serve food.Certainly wouldn't stay again very poor
Review 22:The room we got was NOTHING like the photos on the booking site. Very disappointing as they looked really nice and we only got one towel each for 2 nights stay. No hand towels in bathroom.
Review 23:Staff nice and friendly. Nice place. Great breakfast.
Review 24:The bedroom door was difficult to lock and could be easily broken into.
Review 25:Was a lovely bed&breakfast and the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast very yummy! Room was nice and bed was very comfy.
Review 26:Our room was (No1) and was directly between the front door and diningroom. Consequently was unnaceptably noisy. People standing directlyoutside our room discussing their affairs at length and plans for theirday ahead extremely loudly with the male owner of the house. Incredible! If one was wanting a peaceful break then avoid room 1. This room simplyshould not be offered to paying customers. It is suitable only for alounge or dining area. Extremely annoying and disappointing. Spoilt thewkend. The room also had thick dust on all ledges and some of thefurniture is very cheap pine and falling apart. The T.v had a very poorpicture as everything was purple. For a little more effort and thoughtand very little cost, the Springfield could be much improved.
Review 27:We liked the location. The bed was very comfortable. Nice host.
Review 28:Nothing but did expect more for money. Rooms fine but not luxurious Mould in bathroom & Saniflow very noisy. Orange walls very disconcerting
Review 29:Location. Friendly. Comfortable but not luxurious. Very good breakfasts Relaxed atmosphere
Review 30:Macerator toilet was noisy and smelly. We could hear toilets in other rooms in the night, which was annoying.
Review 31:Overall the atmosphere was very relaxing. Our room was huge and the bed extremely comfy. The staff were friendly & helpful. Added bonus of free parking right outside the door.
Review 32:We were given a classic room on the top floor. The bed was extremely hard with a spring sticking out of it. The light fittings were hanging from the ceiling with bare wires exposed. We complained about the bed the next morning and the owner moved us to a superior room where the bed was much better, without any hesitation. Unfortunately both rooms were very dusty had lots of cobwebs and were generally not very clean. The bedding, toilet and sink in both rooms were spotless, but the showers had lots of black round the grout and door edges. I had to clean the wardrobe shelve before I could use it, otherwise my clothes would have got very dusty.
Review 33:The staff were friendly and helpful. The accommodation was in a good position within Northumberland to visit the area. The cooked breakfast was well cooked, but lacked decent fresh fruit. A few browning bananas and old apples sat in the bowl for the 3 days we were there, the alternative was tinned grapefruit. Good parking right outside the accommodation.
Review 34:Serious sewage smell in bathroom. 3rd floor bathroom requires noisy pump for toilet and shower to work. Water temperature in the shower varied from hot to cold all by itself.
Review 35:Great location and friendly staff
Review 36:Booking in - there was no one to greet us when we arrived and others were faced with a similar experience. Car parking - is available on the road outside and is not, in my view, 'on site' as described. We had no serious problems parking but we had sometimes to wait to grab a convenient space. Cleanliness - the decoration in the room we had was 'tired' and in places, was dusty. The carpet, cushion covers and the bed cover were a little grubby. The bathroom would benefit from a clean to remove dirt from the 'crevices'. Paying - we expected to pay by card but the machine was not working at the time. The information in the room stated only cash and cheques were accepted - so the ability to pay by card was unclear..
Review 37:Reasonable value. The owners were very helpful and friendly as were the staff. The room was big with a large bed, and a large settee and separate chair. This B&B is located in the centre of Rothbury and is very handy for local pubs and restaurants etc. Rothbury is a good location for a base to tour the area and is very close to Cragside.
Review 38:Breakfast could be even better if served on warm plates. Personally not fond of cold poached eggs. Otherwise well done a lovely stay. Thank you
Review 39:Excellent location for visiting Craigside National Trust. Room was spacious, clean .and quiet at night. Three outlets for food are within walking distance.
Review 40:Only slight niggle was the wifi was very slow.
Review 41:We have stayed here before and love the location, rooms and staff. Could not be more convenient for visiting Cragside.
Review 42:- very dirty room and en-suite (sofa covered in food crumbs and huge amount of spiders, cobwebs and dust in bathroom especially) oh and we went to make a drink from tea making facilities in room to find cups very dusty and the kettle had something white stuck to the side of it- maybe moisturiser or something? - had asked if i could use their microwave for toddlers milk, was told yes and i could use their fridge for which we were very grateful, until our 2nd night at bedtime when we found they'd used our milk fully and microwave gone meaning one very upset child and annoyed parents. - at breakfast, 1st morning food was good but if I'm picking, chipped cup and a hair on plate. On 2nd day my cup very dirty and coffee stone cold. - i know it probably can't be helped to have saniflow systems in the en-suite but it really kicks out a stench now and again, quite horrible when having a shower! - huge amount of mould behind shutters in bedroom, we closed them to make room darker for our daughter to sleep and walls are black behind.
Review 43:the owners/staff. dont get me wrong, it took a little while to meet them as no-one was around to welcome us when we arrived but there's a phone provided and it said to call if they weren't around so that wasn't as personal as we're used to but not a problem. When we did meet the family, they were incredibly friendly and helpful in suggesting where to visit nearby with our young child. The lady serving breakfast on a morning was efficient, friendly but not over-bearing so all round, really nice people. This place just needs one hell of a clean and maybe to mention to members of staff not to take the small bottle of milk out of the utility fridge when we were assured it was fine to be put there. I'd been in pjs when we realised it had been taken and had to run down to the shop to buy more milk which our daughter kicked off about being cold and pretty late.
Review 44:the lowness of one of the beds in our twin room as we are both over 60, it wasn't ideal but we didn't let it spoil the rest of the lovely stay at this friendly B & B.
Review 45:The quick response to our request for a 2nd chair in our room.
Review 46:The en-suite bathroom had a lot to be desired.Towels were thin and wet after one use. Vent axia did not work and there were no windows. A saniflo toilet which was extremely noisy, did not work satisfactorily and made the bathroom smell. All in all the guest house could have done with a make over.
Review 47:The room was large and the bed comfortable.
Review 48:The moment I seen the out side , never seen the lady or man of the house had a call to tell us the front door would be open and a key would be in the door of number 4 and she was still not there in morning breakfast was terrible cold so did not eat it
Review 49:It was terrible want to for get I stayed there
Review 50:when we got up on sunday morning the shiets had come away from the mattress and all the mattress was ripped, also the shower was very small, also did not like the fact when we arrived there was no one there had to ring them to let us know we had arrived only to be told the key was in our door giving us our room number
Review 51:we really enjoyed the location and the selection at breakfast was great
Review 52:Bathrooms in poor state of repair. We moved from one room to another due to this, where it turned out that the shower cubicle leaked and the bed was worn out. The entrance hall smelt musty so I opened a window - but would that help in winter?
Review 53:Friendly staff, location
Review 54:It was a basic room up 2 flights of stairs. The wallpaper was shabby, the carpet was frayed and the shower tray was chipped in several places. We also had concerns about the cleanliness of the cooking area which was next to the kitchen, especially the microwave.
Review 55:Helpful, friendly and welcoming owners. Excellent location with parking outside the front of the building.
Review 56:Bathroom hideous and cramped, smelly toilet and as for the bright orange colour? Kids had very uncomfortable beds. Microwaving precooked food is not a freshly prepared breakfast.
Review 57:Location, central with plenty of places to choose from an easy walk from the accommodation.
Review 58:We arrived around 8 in the evening after a long and tiring day, and rang for some time until one of the other visitors let us in. She said the owners weren't there! That was a bit of a shock. The phone in the hall didn't work so the guest lent us their mobile so we could call the owners. They had gone home, as they have small kids, which is understandable, but what if the other guests hadnt heard us ringing the bell? Not a great start. Our room (7) was up two flights of stairs - so wasn't worth bringing the big case up for one night. Older people should ask for a room on the lower floor, not 7 or 8.
Review 59:The owners were extremely nice friendly people and helpful with itinerary advice before we left. Very nice breakfast, catering to vegetarian needs. There was a nice fire in dining room, and the owners were very attentive. Room 7 was fine and clean, although up 2 flights of stairs, and the bed was comfortable. Pub next door very convenient.
Review 60:I did not like leaving !!
Review 61:The accommodation and breakfast was wonderful, fantastic homely place, second time there and look forward to my next visit, what ever you pay it is worth double this, thanks. BOOK WITH CONFIDENCE
Review 62:The Sanilav in room 7's en-suite Being on the top floor Card payment not accepted
Review 63:Good location in village and for visiting attractions in Northumberland Friendly staff Great breakfasts Spacious room
Review 64:Parking was list as on site, but it is on the street, and is a bit hit and miss. The mattress was not of good quality, felt every spring in it.
Review 65:Good Location,
Review 66:Would have liked a second chair in the bedroom. The spare bed wasn't very comfortable.
Review 67:Central situation in Rothbury, easy access to country walks.
Review 68:no customer service in person only by using a phone which wasnt even connected to the mains... Never saw the proprietor or anyone else until breakfast time. not even to collect the money for staying there (came out by card) No information at all re. what time for breakfast or where in the building it would be room was not the Superior type paid for just ordinary Old fashioned TV Soap thing kept falling off the shower pipe Overall not worth half the money so seeking a partial refund due to breach of contract
Review 69:comfy bed
Review 70:Sani Flow toilet was blocked throughout our 2 nights stay. Vertical pole supporting shower-head collapsed at a touch & crashed to the bottom of the tray. Some serious cobwebs, thick dust & a broken lightbulb. Older style TV & bedside lamps not ready to work. Argumentative & defensive manager, unhappy with criticism but full of excuses & overating/attempting to justify what was offered.
Review 71:Location, free Wi-Fi & breakfast.
Review 72:Cragside is really worth visiting and we will definitely return to spend more time there as not only is the house interesting but the grounds are superb.
Review 73:Was a bit scruffy outside - weeds, cigarette ends, dead plants in hanging baskets, door and windows need a paint and freshen up. There was no one to greet us which is fine but we were not sure how to get in. Keys are left in doors for guests to get into rooms, although this may not be the norm as there had been family bereavement. The rooms are tired and we felt a bit disappointed. It did not feel like a four star. mould in shower and on walls of family room, windows very mouldy, cobwebs on stone walls and thick layer dust on top of curtains, stains on carpet. Our sheet was not fitted so came off the bed each night exposing the mattress and also the duvet cover had no fastenings and was completely open at the end so the old looking downie hung out of the cover.
Review 74:Large rooms Ample parking Great location for visiting area Lots of hot water Great breakfast Friendly staff at breakfast and good filling breakfast and great choice Free wifi Plenty cupboard space
Review 75:Noisy floorboards in our room - not a big problem by any means, but really the only negative.
Review 76:Fantastic range of choices for a quality breakfast - a huge one if you want it too. Staff and owner very friendly and helpful. Great location.
Review 77:The room was large but the onsite was extremely tiny. You had to be very slim to fit in between the toilet and the sink and shower. Found a bathroom in a touring caravan bigger. Overpriced for what we got.
Review 78:The location was good. The staff were very friendly.
Review 79:We had cathedral top room and wifi signal wasn't the best but worked.
Review 80:The hosts were super friendly and couldn't do enough to help. Breakfast service and food was excellent.
Review 81:The sani-flow toilet was a bit disconcerting and took some getting used to. The towels were a little worn and soon wet.
Review 82:Hearty breakfast available and a comfy bed
Review 83:Decorative cushions on the bed - a personal no-no (where do you put them without taking up a chair?).
Review 84:We had a most comfortable stay and were made very welcome by the friendly owners. We would happily stay here again.
Review 85:Only thing was the sound after using the bathroom facilities, but that only lasted a few seconds and we were forewarned so no big deal.
Review 86:The staff were friendly and easy going. The room was huge which was good as we had large suitcases
Review 87:Pillows were a little soft but that's a personal preference I think.
Review 88:Really friendly staff. Danielle gave me a call to let us know just to go straight to our room when we arrived as she was held up. She arrived soon after us and was very friendly, letting us know the local pubs and restaurants and how their breakfast worked. Perfect service.
Review 89:Nobody to greet you on arrival Breakfast was only ok
Review 90:The bedroom was quite big. It was close to Gragside and Alnwich It had parking space A few good places to eat near
Review 91:No one to greet us on arrival and no fried eggs for breakfast only poached or scrambled saniflow toilets were noisy
Review 92:Great location in a lovely village close to Cragside
Review 93:no towels even after request When opened wardrobe door, wardrobe fell on wife due to floor uneven. Furniture old. windows dirty and covered in cobwebbs bed mattress had a very large tear in it when complained about was told "what do you expect for £40 per night
Review 94:nothing
Review 95:In ironed sheets Wire sticking out of plug Chemical, smelly randomly flushing toilet Only saw hosts on last day of three day stay Dirty bathroom
Review 96:Breakfast Good nights sleep Hot water in shower
Review 97:No member of staff to meet and greet us or say goodbye. The only member of staff we met was the guy who made breakfast. He was pleasant but breakfast was cooked in the microwave. One of the cushions on our bed had make up marks on one side so not very pleasant.
Review 98:The location.
Review 99:Everything was fine
Review 100:I have a couple of days at the springfield and the owners couldn't help enough everything was clean and tidy and bed was Comfortable. What more can you want.
Review 101:No one to welcome you on arrival, just a note and a phone asking you to ring the owner who advised me to take room 2, on entering the room looked pleasant but the toilet didn't flush and was coming away from the wall and the bathroom was BRIGHT orange. Breakfast was OK nothing special and the bed was so uncomfortable I needed pain killers in the morning.
Review 102:The WiFi was the best bit
Review 103:Only downside if it really is was the sani flow toilet. Bit noisy! But shower lovely.
Review 104:Bedroom spacious. Bathroom large enough. Breakfast fab. Choices were great and the bacon especially lush!!
Review 105:We had a brilliant stay at the Springfield felt relaxed from the moment we got there, you could come and go as you liked front door was open till late so no pressure if you wanted to stay out late bed was really comfortable and the house was quiet
Review 106:room could have done with a good clean, thick dust on TV, pictures etc, toilet a bit smelly, drains.
Review 107:Friendly owners, great breakfast, could come and go as you please.
Review 108:The Springfield rooms are very spacious and comfortable unlike many hotel rooms they have two chairs making it comfortable enough to spend time indoors it can't be faulted.
Review 109:Bathroom was painted bright Orange!! Difficult to look at when you've just woken up
Review 110:Place was lovely, bed was so comfy with a mattress topper. Staff excellent and very accommodating. Will be staying again in the future!
Review 111:Hard to find as the signpost on the building is very small! The directions given on the website were very good, though. (Word to the wise: Make sure you print out directions because mobile signal through the village is weak. I learned the hard way and had to "Phone a Friend" at 1am)
Review 112:Friendly staff made allowances for my very late arrival (1am!) and let me have a bit of a lie-in the next morning - thank you! Rooms were spacious, well-appointed, clean - really a very nice place to stay. I stay in a lot of hotels and B&Bs and this place stood out. There is a definite sense of pride in The Springfield from the staff/owners.
Review 113:Beautiful village, with. Plenty of facilities, supermarket, Shops ,places to eat.
Review 114:Good use of an property, nicely decorated and beautifully clean. An excellent position, good place to walk from.
Review 115:The bathroom was a little on the small side but ok for a weekend break.
Review 116:Located very close to all local amenities such as restaurants, pubs etc. Nice, large comfortable room which was cosily warm even on arrival.
Review 117:Reading the unkind reviews on this b and b. When you pay such a low price there is no justification for complaint.. If customers want more than this then they should go to bigger establishments and pay for the trimmings.
Review 118:Easy, relaxed, establishment. Lovely people helpful and friendly. Warm and comfortable.great breakfast cooked with local produce and excellent value for money..hot water at all times ,handy for all shops and ammenities on Rothbury..we had a wonderful 4 days in this great part of the world. Oh sky tv too .would stay there again as I dont think there is better value for money. Happy New Year
Review 119:Room dusty, mould on shower seal, dead flies in table lamp bulb, heating broke down on day 2. Drawers full of hair and fluff.Would not go back if they paid me. How it can justify 4 stars beggars belief.
Review 120:Food was good
Review 121:Central location in a lovely, village with plenty of walks nearby, pet-friendly, very large, comforable rooms, kitchen and facilities for your use, lovely breakfast, very friendly and helpful staff, what more could you ask for !!!
Review 122:Nothing negative to say about the place, it was all good.
Review 123:Rothbury is a very friendly village which is full of character and the Springfield fits in well with that. Very comfortable, homely feel to the place and good dining options within a couple of minutes walk. A short drive away from Alnwick and other places of interest in the county.
Review 124:Absolute joke staying here. Proprietor had gone awol, so you just wanderin off the street and pick a room. Nobody there to check you in.Couldn't use the en suite as it was broken. Had to attend breakfastat 8am or not at all. No heating in an old stone house when it was 0degrees outside. Worst night's sleep ever. Terrible customer service-I complained and said I wasn't going to pay, yet she has takenpayment from my account anyway. Unacceptable.
Review 125:Couldn't find the light switch for the kitchen so was trying to fill bottles with milk in the dark (saying that, it was great to have the fridge for storage) after seeing the kitchen in daylight, it could do with a makeover, especially when guests are allowed the use of it as the rest of the establishment is spotless and pleasing to the eye
Review 126:Danielle, Gavin and little Freddy were very friendly & helpful! On arrival, our keys were in our doors and we had use of the kitchen and dining room which helped us to feel at home, our little girl was made very welcome too, breakfast was amazing and they were OK with us cancelling it next day as we're not breakfast eaters but they offered to leave out bread for us to make toast etc for the little one. The bed was so comfortable and the sofa was handy for reading/watching TV. Tried to book an extra 3rd night but they were full, sadly for us!
Review 127:because the rooms are so large, which is a good thing....you might think about putting in a larger television. The tv is a portable size. Lost in that room. I know you dont go on holiday to watch tv, but i do like to watch it in bed at night. The sound was very low. This is just a point of view from us old folkies!
Review 128:Gavin you cook a mean breakfast. Even loaned us his national trust card for craigside hall. The room is large, plenty of drawers and space for hanging your clothes. We were on the front of the building, which we loved. We would love to stay again.
Review 129:Slight road noise due to being on the main road , didn't like the sani plumbing system as was very noisy . The decor in the room a bit worn in places nothing major
Review 130:friendly and relaxed staff and owners . Great to be able to take the dog and they were really relaxed about her. We are vegertians so really good to have a veggie breakfast each morning . Spacious room and a decent put up bed . bedding and towels nice and clean no wearing
Review 131:The saniflo toilets horrible noise when you flush it , and basic tiling in an suite and gaps under the bed room door in room 1 .
Review 132:Very friendly nice breakfast, and nice soft bed. Really nice people well done
Review 133:Very small bathroom with saniflow toilet. Bed was rather soft for our taste. Room was very warm which I imagine will be welcome in winter and on cool days, but we found it too warm on the mild days and nights of October. No one around when we arrived and had to phone hostess who told us to let ourselves in (door was unlocked).
Review 134:Large room with interesting period features. Plentiful tea and coffee facilities. Friendly host at breakfast time. Good breakfast, well cooked. Excellent location right in town, next to a good pub and close to river walks.
Review 135:The only downside if anything was our room was on top floor, and lots of stairs to climb. After a day out exploring and lots of walking it was a little problem for us as we're feeling our aches and pains ( due to age )now !!
Review 136:The Springfield was central to the town, facilities were excellent, food great and loads of it, and next to a pub for evening meal ! Couldn't be easier.
Review 137:Nothing
Review 138:The Springfield was in a superb position to visit N.T properties Crag side and Wallington plus lots of walks and country side to explore.Hosts Danielle and Gavin very welcoming and friendly.Selection of places to eat out within walking distance of accomodation.
Review 139:Didn't expect the bathroom to be a sani-flow system, I wouldn't have booked this accommodation if this had been known.
Review 140:The bed was comfortable.
