Reviews for Dundee Backpackers

Review 1:The main entrance to the hostel is hidden and looks a bit creepy.

Review 2:The design of the hostel and the room is great. It surprised us when we opened the room door! Didn't expect the nice decor and the history bits. Location is brilliant, right in the city centre.

Review 3:As our room was at the back it was a bit noisy with people shouting in the early hours when club closed. Felt receptionist could have been more pleasant, maybe better training would help as he didn't know about our booking-and that it was already paid for. Thought he wasn't going to let us in!

Review 4:the location was great and having an en suite which was very clean. No time restrictions and a comfortable bed. For the price I think it was good value.

Review 5:Several showers were out of action, and it is starting to look slightly tatty, but this was down from a previous v. high standard

Review 6:Great Location and facilities. Staff really good and efficient.

Review 7:Nothing really! A bit noisy with (Arctic Bar Kaoroke?) And I imagine because there is no double glazing etc.

Review 8:I am a proud Dundonian and love history/architecture esp. Of my City. So was a privelage to stay in one of Dundee's rare late medieval survivors from destruction by official vandalism in 1870's/1930's/1960's!

Review 9:Enjoyed our stay the bed was a bit soft and maybe a bit pricey for this time of year

Review 10:Location of property was excellent . Loved the inside of the Backpackers and all it's history.

Review 11:With it being centrally located can be a little noisy from the outside passer bys but once I was asleep it was fine. Just remember the clue is in the name backpackers so do not take a lot of luggage as not lift and some rooms up several flights of stairs.

Review 12:Very central location. Staff were very helpful and gave me tour of the building and facilities prior to assisting me to my room. Very spacious, Room 16, even had a sofa in it, clean room. Shared bathroom but this did not prove to be a problem

Review 13:The karookee bar under my room... I was there for a university conference, and I needed the sleep, but didn't get it. Because of that, and the cold bathroom, I felt that the room was a bit overpriced.

Review 14:Lovely house!!! I appreachiated the explanations on the wall, informing us as guests about the historical aspects of the architecture. The atmosphere was great, and the people, guests as well as staff, very friendly and helpfull.

Review 15:The only drawback is the shared bathrooms, which may be occupied when you need it and may not be as clean if your neighbour has not left them in a clean condition ...

Review 16:It doesn't look special at all from the outside; in fact, we walked past it. However, the inside is amazing. It is a very old house which has been completely renovated and refurbished and there are pictures on the wall of what it looked like before. It is a lovely hostel, very cosy, clean and it feels very homely. There is a reading room with a (fake) fireplace, which is extremely cosy and a huge game room where you can play table tennis and snooker.

Review 17:All the stairs :( location to alley pub making my stay very noisey til about 1 am, this could be fixed with double glazing or secondary at the back. It was very rowdy and fights broke out so a bit scarey too, games room shabby WiFi room inadequate

Review 18:location was perfect

Review 19:Quite a few light bulbs missing :-) Great central location but that means it may get a bit loud on Friday and Saturday nights in the old part of the hostel. Perfectly fine for me, but if somebody is sensitive to noise in the night, perhaps something to consider when booking.

Review 20:Pretty, historic building. Spacious room. There was a safe place for my bike. Helpful staff.

Review 21:there was no tea or coffee facilties in the room

Review 22:the location in the town centre so your close to everythingnot much in the way of staff it really is a backpakers hostel

Review 23:Thin sash windows meant a lot of street facing noise could be heard throughout the night...

Review 24:Big, bright, fresh room provided with a spacious, clean bathroom, and powerful hot shower.

Review 25:Lighting issues in games room and limited WiFi (i.e. 2 routers but only one password available to guests) - the lighinting in the "games room" where the wifi worked was pretty much non-existant

Review 26:Location, cleanliness, facilities and speed of check in.

Review 27:The staff of the hostel, hosted me like a family. They have really good enviroment and are great people. Thankyou guys! The building is the oldest building in the city. Very random! Random arquitecture in which you can easily get lost, with losts of history, and .. apparently a ghost ;). The hostel distribution makes it feel like a city-hostel. A city hostel in vertical dimension. REALLY LIKED IT! it is worth to visit, and best to stay.

Review 28:One down side was the early check out of 10am. The option of a late check out would be nice and would definitely encourage us to stay again

Review 29:Really enjoyed our stay, rooms were comfortable, spacious and warm. The shower was excellent.

Review 30:A bit ignorant receptionist didn't really inform me about anything.

Review 31:The room was clean, heated and warm when I stayed in the middle of September, it's a big plus hence it was rainy and cold outside. + Enought power sockets and table side lamsp.

Review 32:Complete absence of facilities! I made a mistake when booking and didn't appreciate I had a non-ensuite room (my bad). But, there was no bathroom near my room other than the disabled one. No towels or anything are provided. And, while the room was comparatively cheap, it was hardly a giveaway...

Review 33:Handily located for my purposes. Surprisingly good sleep from a room over the High Street! Friendly, helpful staff.

Review 34:Great place. One of the nicest hostels I've ever stayed in. Great location and easy to find. One of the oldest buildings in Dundee. Full of character and charm. I have no trouble recommending it.

Review 35:Due to location in city noisy at night if windows opened. Room needed a little decorating.

Review 36:Close to everything. Friendly helpful staff Comfortable Good size room and everything you could need

Review 37:many staircase to get to the room

Review 38:the big room with unbelievable comfortable bed, great location in the centre of city, nice colorful corridors and staircase, well equiped kitchen with many places in dining room

Review 39:Not having a bathroom ensuite and having to reach it through a heavy fire door.

Review 40:Its unusual historic building and central Dundee position. Our room was large and attractive and, despite facing the main street, was not noisy. Reception staff were willing and helpful.

Review 41:Unfortunately like every hotel/hostel in the world you can't control your fellow travellers. So while only one person was waking up my floor by knocking on doors at 3am it did spoil my stay, and while there is security you don't have phones in the room so that is a issue for solo travellers. But all said I would stay here again

Review 42:Grat location really great communal areas bedrooms are basic but have every thing you need clean and the beds are comfortable

Review 43:Location was in the shopping district and right across from the venue of my event. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 44:Good location in town centre. Room (double ensuite) ok but only basic furniture. Small hand towel just sufficient for a shower.

Review 45:no bedside lamp

Review 46:friendly, helpful staff good kitchen facilities easy location

Review 47:For shared bathroom and no access to wifi the price was very high

Review 48:Friendly staff, excellent location

Review 49:Excellent location.

Review 50:wall's a bit thin could hear person next door coughing and wheezing all night

Review 51:helped carry large suitcase upstairs, very good location

Review 52:Stairs!

Review 53:Cleanliness

Review 54:Location and comfort

Review 55:it was near venue i was at, also plenty of eating places nearby and really central for shops

Review 56:Would have been nice to have a television in the room and also some breakfast option.

Review 57:Location, location, location

Review 58:very friendly & helpful staff rooms very clean-- good sitting room -would return great location in high street

Review 59:The space of the room and the overall quirkiness of the building, its age and restoration. Great!!!

Review 60:quietness and the hot shower bed was comfy heard no noise and kitchen and games room made available for use

Review 61:Heights and cleanliness

Review 62:Satisfactory

Review 63:It's for very poor students or very poor people

Review 64:Staff were lovely. On the Main Street of the city. Building has fascinating history. Double room is a lovely size.

Review 65:reports from young sons that the place stank of cannabis

Review 66:central location

Review 67:Karaoke bar outside window.

Review 68:Modern clean areas.

Review 69:Sharing a bathroom. For a mature person a room closer to ground level would have been better as there was a lot of stairs.

Review 70:Location was excellent.

Review 71:Very helpful and friendly staff. Large room and easy access to facilities.

Review 72:Games room

Review 73:Unfortunately some of the showers were out of order so a bit of a trek to find a working one.

Review 74:Centrally located.

Review 75:hard to find, parking is nearly impossible

Review 76:couldn't have a better location

Review 77:Our shower was very very hot for the first couple of days and didn't become cooler till the last day, even when moving the tempture. The room was also quite dark.

Review 78:I liked the size of the room and kitchen. The was also plenty of sockets it use.

Review 79:Slightly sloppy cleaning of the room before us, with a pair of men's underwear underneath the bed.

Review 80:The room we got was enormous, with en-suite bathroom and a view of the main square, really comfortable, great value for money.

Review 81:I found nothing at all to criticise.

Review 82:Central location. Straight forward with no frills which is what I like. Clean and tidy. Very helpful staff. Comfortable bed. Nice lounge room with tv. Other useful facilities should I have needed them.

Review 83:I didn't rebook the hotel on time ,when I come back , l was complained for 5 minutes. really bad attitude that I met . the stuff is not nice .really bad person .

Review 84:cooking

Review 85:Heating system did not seem to be working properly, although temperature was still low. Wi-fi only in common area - not a problem, but just to note.

Review 86:Right in the middle of Dundee downtown. Staff is very friendly. Close to restaurants/public transport and shopping area! Very good for the budget traveler. Room w/bathroom was spacious.

Review 87:The way to the room is not good for trolleys because of the stairs but stuff helps you if you want.

Review 88:Bed was good and the room was warm enough for frozen people from the black forest

Review 89:We booked an en-suite room for 2 adults. We were provided with 1 hand towel. The room contained 1 chair and only 1 bedside lamp. The shower had no slip mat. Although I accept that this is a hostel and not a hotel, it was not worth £50 per night.

Review 90:Location was good...room was clean and bed was very comfortable.

Review 91:The radiator in the bathroom didn't work I thought it was slightly overpriced for a private room, but wouldn't have shared

Review 92:The size of the room The facilities - Kitchen etc

Review 93:I arrived at satuday night and There were anyone who helped me to open the door and do check-in. I was more than 15 minutes screaming "Hello" so anyone can open the door for me! I couldn't make check-in before 8.00 am!

Review 94:The location es very good and central.

Review 95:There was nothing I disliked. If I had to say anything, it would be that the bed was a bit too small for me and my partner, length and width wise. But despite that,it was really comfy.

Review 96:The whole environment was clean and comfortable, and the room was a good size. I liked that there were communal areas and facilities like a living room with a dvd player.

Review 97:The shower head had to be held as the bracket was broken. As all thedoors were fire doors, they tended to slam loudly when they were closed, which was throughout the night. It was quite hard to find as theentrance is just a small doorway in between two shops.

Review 98:A really well located place to stay, right in the heart of Dundee. Thestaff were very friendly, the room had everything we needed, includingcoffee making facilities. We shared a very clean bathroom with only oneother room. We had a lovely view over the square, with all the colouredlights in the evening was really pretty!

Review 99:Bathrooms could be a little more cleaner, but it was still ok for backpackers' standards.

Review 100:Great location. Lovely and friendly staff. Plenty of bathroom/toilet facilities.

Review 101:our window on the backside of backpackers, there was a karaooke bar there, and we wish that some of the singers had a better voice...........=)

Review 102:almost everything.

Review 103:This is not a real 4 star hotel. I think this hotel is cheating the customer by putting 4 star there. I had a terrible night there. Very dirty bed!!! I remember when I got off from the tax leading to this hotel, I tax driver warned me about the terrible conditions in this hotel......

Review 104:badly marked found it hard to find when looking for it too dark entrance sign, no lift room right at top and luggage heavy and difficult to carry up the small winding staircase, kitchen could be cleaner, rooms could have small tv access

Review 105:like the location very easy right in the centre of the action

Review 106:We were not told that we would have to bring photo ID which was a bit of a surprise. We were also not pre-warned to have £5 in cash as a deposit for the room key. It would have been better to have been told these things in advance. The Farmers' Market set up from 5.20am on Saturday morning which did disturb us. This was unfortunate but not the hostel's fault. I think the property could benefit from a re-paint and freshen up - and possibly secondary glazing. Otherwise our stay was perfectly comfortable.

Review 107:The location was excellent, very central and close to all the city's amenities and activities. It was quieter than expected for a city centre location (and a weekend). It felt quite private and the room had nice original features.

Review 108:we we not aware that towels were not available ... we could have brought our own, but the staff sorted us out. Also not aware of the shared bath room but it wasnt a problem ......

Review 109:great location, comfy bed, nice room, great staff, we will be back !!!

Review 110:Thought I'd booked an en-suite but had to use shared bathroom, but it was clean and just next door to my room so wasn't really a problem.

Review 111:My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night in a private double. The hostel was in a great location, right in the city center. The bed was huge and very comfortable and the room was really nice and clean. Great value for money and so much nicer than staying in a travelodge or premier inn. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Would deff stay here again.

Review 112:The price was great double room for under 40 quid city centre location couldn't be betr.

Review 113:Hotel is bang on city centre was on main street for shopping bars and shops staff very friendly.

Review 114:some of the younger guests could be a little noisy during the night and there seemed to be no real effort made by staff to stop it.

Review 115:budget-friendly, clean, well-situated and of historical interest

Review 116:The door to my room was ajar when I went up and I had a feeling someone had been Lying on the pilow. But the receptionist kindly provided me with fresh pillow cases.

Review 117:City centre location Historic building Friendly helpful staff

Review 118:Lift was broken and receptionist a bit teflon- coated about when or ifit would be fixed. Only one out of three light bulbs in our room worked. This wasn't remedied, although I asked for them to be replaced.

Review 119:The location and the ambience of the building. I had visited themedieval building during an Open Doors event a few years ago, before itwas renovated and wondered how they would maintain the character of thebuilding, but they have. The quality of the rooms is good with minimalbut tasteful neutral decor.

Review 120:Radiator in bathroom could not be turned off even though it was extremely warm weather. Also it was very noisy

Review 121:Very little

Review 122:Noise!

Review 123:Room and location...

Review 124:Central location Good value accommodation Well- equipped kitchen

Review 125:Amazing location, well-equipped kitchen and the building itself was fascinating with lots of information about the history and renovation provided.

Review 126:scruffy and dirty carpet, dirty kitchen

Review 127:friendly staff, good location

Review 128:The wafer thin windows the coldness in the bathroom, and no tv

Review 129:Get up early! (Not their fault - myself and my co-worker have to leave early)

Review 130:Beautiful view of Xmas lights at outside of the windows!

Review 131:The room has long been redecorated.

Review 132:Clean linens.
