Reviews for The Dog & Partridge Country Inn

Review 1:chalet cabin rooms, smelt musty, need updating, have stayed in accommodation a lot better for less money!

Review 2:food good but expensive, manager and staff friendly

Review 3:It was a slightly odd place - the rooms are all separate from the main pub building and are pre fabricated bungalows - inside was clean but the description on the site was a little misleading. - the photos suggest a traditional pub but it lacks a sense of cohesion due to all of the extensions .

Review 4:Good location, very warm welcome when we arrived. The bar of the pub was cosy. Clean rooms. Good breakfast.

Review 5:Rooms in separate buildings in grounds, and had to walk up some very steep steps to access the pub and restaurant, not very pleasant in rain, ice and snow. Being woken up very early by a cockerel from a nearby farm.

Review 6:Excellent breakfast and evening meal in restaurant, with a wide choice of menus for both.

Review 7:The room smelled of damp and so did my cloths next day. Shower hose rusty single bed stained and looked like it had been slept in. Reception a mess. Cockeral crowed from 2.45am onwards.

Review 8:staff good and so was food

Review 9:Arrived to be greeted by friendly, efficient staff. Escorted to our room ang, gosh...it was huge. Massive bed, comfy settee, big telly...Fab Had a meal in the pub, which was great and the incluged breakfast was amazing. Staff where fantastic...cant praise it enough

Review 10:Leaking water from ceiling/roof at night straight on the bed where children were sleeping. Place being near cycling root to think of place to mount bicycle to securely

Review 11:Quite place Accommodative for young family Good & safe place to park cars.

Review 12:Wifi poor along with mibile signal however if u can't do without it then how sad is that. Will be a bit pricey for some

Review 13:Room are chalet type food was absolutley fantastic breakfast was amazing nice bar

Review 14:Excellent response to any needs and information wanted. very friendly staff, stunning views from our bedroom. As a young group of friends, it was a total different experience. definitely recommended and will be staying again.

Review 15:The bathroom smelt of drains. The toilet had a large black stain in the bottom of the bowl. The sofa bed had springs digging into you. We were booked for two nights but cancelled the following morning as one night was enough.

Review 16:The location was convenient for us.

Review 17:The location was brilliant for a weekend in Alton towers. The breakfast was amazing and staff were very nice and accommodating--esp when we ended up arriving quite late due to traffic.

Review 18:It advertises itself as a 17th century inn, but actually the accommodation is a modern motel style block out the back.

Review 19:Good location and very pleasant evening meal

Review 20:The actual rooms are more like holiday cottages - which they probably are in summertime.

Review 21:The authenticity of the main building, a nice country inn, open fire, location near to the Derbyshire Dales

Review 22:The room was cold and damp.. Dinner took over an hour to be served. Little sympathy when my sister became ill, in fact the matter was referred to a superior who was chatting on the phone who simply shook her head as a reply to my questions.

Review 23:Excellent breakfast and staff serving it very helpful.

Review 24:Food slightly to expensive but it was good.

Review 25:GREAT ATMOSPHERE WITHIN THE STAFF, THEY ALL MAKE AN EFFORT AND PROVIDE A PERSONAL HAPPY FEEL. FOOD WAS GREAT AND BREAKFAST SUPERB. WELL WORTH A VISIT. BEFORE BOOKING I HAVE READ SOME REVIEWS OF PEOPLE PICKING FAULT WHICH I THINK IS UNFAIR. IT’S NOT A 5 STAR LONDON BASED HOTEL, EVERY ONE WHO STAYS HAS RETURNED FROM A DAYS WALKING SO BE REALISTIC.

Review 26:Our only criticism would be the furnishings are rather tired; The pub itself quite expensive; And the menu as well as being expensive, lacked plain pub food.

Review 27:Our accommodation was very spacious, and quite comfortable. It was a lovely quiet setting.

Review 28:The staff are wonderful! Very friendly and make you feel at home! Delicious evening meal and comfortable rooms - we slept very well. Location good for Ashbourne and Dove Dale plus other great places to visit in the Peak District.

Review 29:We would definitely stay here again and would recommend this establishment. The landlady Mary and her family and staff were very welcoming and friendly. The food was delicious.

Review 30:the only criticism as far as we're concerned was the amount of steps

Review 31:Mary and Martin were very welcoming and put themselves out to move some furniture to help my husband to get a nights sleep

Review 32:Staff ignored us on arrival for our evening meal there were 3 large tables which obviously slowed the service this we understood but a number of waitresses walked past us and the person who appeared to be in charge seated a couple behind us first?

Review 33:The food was excellent both on the evening and at breakfast

Review 34:Mirror in bathroom far too low! Position of toilet roll holder - awkward behind toilet. It would be nice to see some colourful flowers around the pub to make it look more attractive.

Review 35:Very friendly staff, and very accommodating in the evening even though they were busy. Good food. Good breakfast with a huge choice. Comfortable cabins.

Review 36:Bed was a bit firm for our taste. Wished for a stand up shower option.

Review 37:Atmosphere was good. Food was delicious. Staff were welcoming and accommodating upon arriving early due to a flight. Not too far from town. Quiet setting.

Review 38:The hotel was lovely, dog friendly clean and tidy with a nice playground. Breakfast could have been better though. Other than that it was a lovely stay

Review 39:You can park your car right outside your accommodation in the grounds. Accommodation is well spaced out in the grounds. Good children's play area in the garden - but far enough away from rooms to not upset other guests. Good breakfast with lots of variety. Very friendly staff and owners. Family room available which would accommodate a family with 3 children (double bed, single bed & bunks) - very unusual offering from a hotel.

Review 40:A mild complaint could be that they didn't clean the rooms properly everyday. We returned twice to find dirty cups and beds unmade. But this was corrected when we mentioned it.

Review 41:The Inn is very nicely laid out with the rooms as separate little chalets. The rooms are nice and comfy with firm beds. The facilities are good and the breakfast is fantastic. Enjoyed our stay here overall.

Review 42:Poor service initially at dinner - delay and clueless 'sommelier'. Rectified by major effort of supervising staff.

Review 43:Peace & quiet despite proximity of a main road - and convenience of the 'cabin' with car parked alongside

Review 44:The rooms were portacabins, which was a shock! They were very dated. Ours had a slightly damp feel to it, and there was a bad drain smell at times.

Review 45:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was good and the service was excellent

Review 46:Wi-Fi non-existent in no 22. Too far from router I guess. Late night barman not a cheery soul. Landlord level of sarcasm unwelcome and unnecessary.

Review 47:Chalet/Lodges high decor standard Receptionist very friendly Great location for trail riding. Can park next to your front door.....American motel style!

Review 48:Dinner was quite pricey! Wish we had been made aware that there was a different dining area for the pub as it was a bit cheaper and more relaxed for kids.

Review 49:Fabulous room and great outdoor area that the kids loved. And breakfast was very nice.

Review 50:Would have preferred not to have been in a room with bunk beds also in there, and a walk in shower as opposed to an "over the bath" shower. Room was a little tired but comfortable.

Review 51:The positioning of the rooms laid out like a motel with parking outside. The location and the feel of the place. Our barman was brilliant and a good laugh

Review 52:Apart from one helpful lady when we checked-in, rude and inefficient staff. Bedroom housed in 1960's pre-fab 'chalets' that smelt damp, had sticky carpet and broken bed. £140 for cramped 'family room'. Supper was inedible and hugely overpriced. Breakfast better. Couldn't wait to leave!

Review 53:Only thing was it could be a little noisy first thing in the morning with traffic. Also there was a cock crowing early one of the mornings.

Review 54:Excellent choice at breakfast

Review 55:Wifi was not available in the room. TV remote was barely working. These are not that important for a short stay. Just hope for good weather.

Review 56:Excellent location. Friendly staff. The room was in a separate cabin, quiet and private with individual parking at doorstep. Lovely play area for children with great views of the countryside. Breakfast buffet was more than adequate. Short drive to Matlock Bath.

Review 57:Location quiet, but only accessible by car. Garden room a bit gloomy, although comfortable

Review 58:Great breakfast. There is a large safe area for children to play.

Review 59:stayed here while working at carsington Water. Had a very enjoyable stay, the staff were very helpful, rooms were a good size, clean and very comfortable! Also breakfast is very good, with a wide range of items!

Review 60:No bad experience but eating for a grown up family of four is a bit pricey although the food was excellent.

Review 61:I liked the room set up as we travelled with our teenage kids and it was lovely that we could all be together.

Review 62:Well We have tried to find something that we did not like but we couldn't so I am going to be very very picky and say that in the tea and coffee facility they do not supply decaf coffee but I bought a small jar and in future will know to take some with us.

Review 63:What a super place, very friendly staff, excellent food, breakfast was superb and what choice, chalets were very clean and comfortable, dog was made very welcome and allowed in the bar while we ate our meal, beautiful location, we will definitely be going back just trying to decide when.

Review 64:The accommodation was in need of a "Lick of paint" & as my wife put it some "T L C "

Review 65:The staff were very attentive & helpful.

Review 66:I booked room only and paid a little extra for an amazing breakfast. There was so much choice and it was beautifully laid out. The staff were lovely and friendly. Dinner was good with a varied menu and the pudding was clearly home made and was amazing. The room was perfect and I had a good nights sleep.

Review 67:It's more a motel than an Inn, With most rooms being chalets in the grounds. Some of the rooms are really dated as well.

Review 68:The breakfast was the best bit

Review 69:Rooms poor desparately need refubishment, smelt damp and fusty, website deceiving, expect a little more for £100 a night eg: like a shower!!!

Review 70:Inn was ok and food good

Review 71:The accomodation was not in the building shown in the photographs but in rather dilapidated wooden framed flat roofed huts not connected to the main building where reception and the restaurant is. Our room was poorly insulated and we could here the person in the next room snoring. The food was average and although plentiful of low quality.

Review 72:Leaving.

Review 73:No bar, website totally misleading, hotel accommodation more like holiday camp staff rude, particularly owner poor food bizarre decorations (eg. teddy bears everywhere)

Review 74:Nothing

Review 75:It's not really a bad experience.....but the wi-fi only worked in the restaurant......I know the accommodation is chalets but it would have been nice to get a signal in the rooms.

Review 76:ALL the meals were to die for but dinner was a particular delight.......the sauces were out of this world!! I wish I'd got the recipe for the stilton sauce!! Staff were extremely helpful and very accomodating

Review 77:The proprietors did themselves no favours in their casual style of dress and habits. They let the inn and smart staff down badly. We cancelled our next planned booking for the following weekend through family circumstances and, on reflection, have no regrets.

Review 78:The breakfast buffet was exceptionally good. The staff were very attentive and well turned out.

Review 79:Unfortunately at breakfast found curtains full of cobwebs and flies when I went to unclip the tie backs as the sun was in my eyes!

Review 80:Friendly, efficient staff. Food ' home made' and very generous portions. Convenient 10/15 mins drive from Alton Towers allowing time to unpack and refresh ourselves ready for dinner. Rooms clean and tidy.

Review 81:The rooms are in wood sheds out the back, not what we expected. The food was very over priced for what you got. £20 for a very small ribeye steak and 6 chips.

Review 82:The location is excellent, the pub is very traditional and looks lovely on the pictures.

Review 83:Rooms need upgrading, I can't think of the last time I was unable to have a stand up shower in a hotel, because our room didn't have one, too far from dinning area, very expensive room for what you got

Review 84:Good food, bed comfortable, friendly staff, located in a lovely part of the UK

Review 85:Expected an Inn but the place was over-run with kids guess we should have expected this being so close to Alton Towers. Very slow service at bar, pub food average, beef and ale pie very chewy!!

Review 86:Decent choice at beakfast. Con

Review 87:No wifi. No communal area except the bar

Review 88:Loved our stay. Was what we needed.. Private room but with a friendly pub next door. Food was lovely and reasonably priced!

Review 89:The hot water ran out after 2 showers leaving 3 members of the family without hot water. The bunk bed collapsed.

Review 90:The location was excellent. The fact that all 5 of us could go in one room and still have lots of room was good. A comfortable night sleep. Breakfast was delicious.

Review 91:The menu was 1960's The staff helpful but not well trained eg red wine came in a wine cooler Family rooms are double rooms with bunk beds against the wall

Review 92:The room was warm and clean

Review 93:Got a bit cold - not enough radiators for the large room. A plus for the Adults but the kids hated the fact there was no wifi - they were forced to enter into conversation with their parents!

Review 94:Very roomy place

Review 95:Ordered a vegetarian meal at dinner and it had meat in it.

Review 96:All staff extremely friendly. Room had everything we wanted and could park right outside. Lovely view too.

Review 97:NOT exactly a bad experience but the lack of wifi in the bedrooms was a little inconvenient being as I was there on a business trip.

Review 98:Was made every welcome and definitely felt 'looked after'

Review 99:Rooms are a bit tired, only had a bath with flexible shower attachment, not much use really. TV remote was poor Meals were OK just. Lots of steps up to main building, would be difficult for disabled.

Review 100:No hot water in shower (so we had to use room next door). Water pressure in suite was also very low . Poor restaurant service - no naan bread with curry. Burger overcooked.

Review 101:Location

Review 102:Walls are paper thin so could hear everything in next room. We had a curry in pub that was more like a stew !

Review 103:Breakfast was very good. Staff were polite. Beds very comfy.

Review 104:It was very dark when walking out of back of the pub down quite steep stairs, some of the lights appeared not to be working. Vension casserole not tender enough.

Review 105:Room was perfect for a family of 4, and decent adult bunk beds for teenagers. Pub was cosy and nice to see dogs allowed in, Beer very nice apparently! Food in restaurant a bit different which was nice. Our starters goats cheese and mushrooms with black pudding very good, also my husbands pork, and yummy homemade puddings.

Review 106:No comments to make as there was nothing we disliked!

Review 107:The staff were extremely friendly and the Inn was SO child friendly (which was great as we had a 4 year old with us!). Food was delicious and the location was great as it was only approx 10 mins from Alton Towers which is why we were there - will definitely be staying at the Dog and Partridge in the future!

Review 108:Restaurant Prices higher than expected

Review 109:Clean Friendly Staff always on hand to assist , Great Restaurant Location is less than 20 minutes from Alton Towers

Review 110:Menu in restaurant looked very good, but all 8 meals in our group werevery poor.Rooms were not that clean.cobwebs every where, although good bedding.

Review 111:Cosy bar area. Good location for Alton Towers. Staff very friendlyand helpful.

Review 112:My 2 daughters came back covered in bed bug bites (confirmed by gp) at which my youngest has had a bad reaction to. The full English breakfast didn't have any tomatoes or mushrooms and no choice between toast or friend bread. Will not be stopping there again or recommending it.

Review 113:Staff were very friendly

Review 114:The food was a little overpriced but there was a great range.

Review 115:Great place for an overnight stay for a trip to Alton Towers, the staff were friendly and helpful and the rooms were clean and comfortable.

Review 116:Shower a bit fiddly and feeble Noisy children next door early in the morning.

Review 117:Very friendly staff Excellent location for Alton Towers Family room with a door between adults and children. Set in beautiful countryside Parking next to accommodate Excelent food

Review 118:Accommodation a bit tired and dated, but more than compensated by staff and food.

Review 119:Superbly welcoming staff. One of the most friendly places I have ever stayed. Great restaurant food and sensational breakfasts.

Review 120:We arrived to the hotel late on the 18th October after a full day at Alton towers. Staff were very polite and accommodating. We ordered room service which arrived quickly and was so tasty. Had a great nights sleep in one of the chalets. Arrived for breakfast the next morning, and were extremely surprised to find a huge selection of pastries, mueslis, yoghurts, fruits, fresh juice, toast croissant etc, all included and in addition to a full cooked breakfast of our choosing. Our stay was a delight and we hope to return again soon .

Review 121:The only downside is that there is nothing for miles around this place so just come prepared with everything you need to hand!

Review 122:We were looking for somewhere to stay after a visit to Alton Towers with family and friends and came across the Dog and Partridge in. The staff couldnt do enough for us and brought us room service even after hours as our children had crashed out. The breakfast was amazing with so much choice and the kids play area great!

Review 123:Asked for a cot on booking, had no cot. Towels had stains on them View was lovely but couldn't see through the windows as the glass was blown Cold and a little damp Bathroom needs updating

Review 124:The view

Review 125:things and staff getting a little tired e.g. play area, could tell it was getting to the end of the Alton Towers season

Review 126:Friendly staff, room and facilities fine, great venue for Alton towers, good meals , good breakfast. play area super for young kids , quiet

Review 127:pair of pants found in bedside drawer. all beds wobbly due to fittings missing. light bulbs not working. very bizarre place with people hanging around looking suspicious in the grounds - possibly off-duty staff?, teddy bears in reception, broken things everywhere. was not a cheap hotel (we paid £160/night b+b for family of 4) but there were no luxuries, the whole place was tatty, old-fashioned. breakfast was standard - nothing outstanding. outside play area was partly broken, needed a good lick of paint. i don't normally do reviews of places i have stayed at but the dog and partridge was a total disappointment especially for the high price we paid for it - booking.com should seriously consider removing it from their website as is not a good future advert for them.

Review 128:friendly scottish reception lady. very roomy suite. helpful with gluten-free dietary requirements.

Review 129:Thought we would be staying in nice country pub only to be led round theback to what can only be described as a wood clad hut which I havebetter in my yard at home. Very misleading photos on website

Review 130:Great food great staff

Review 131:The food was very overpriced for what it was, I wouldn't eat there again.

Review 132:Nice rooms, friendly staff, great location for Alton Towers and very kid friendly.

Review 133:When we first went into our room we had some reservations due to the style of buildings (very new and quite ugly style). The room though was spotlessly clean. We then tried the double bed, which was as hard as a board! The bathroom was nice, but no actual shower, only a hand held one. We had hot water in the evening when my daughter had a shower, but none the next morning! The meals were expensive but we would class them as just OK. Breakfast looked spectacular but was a lot of store bought cakes cut up and some were very stale. We were never asked how our stay was when checking out. Would not rate this highly for the price charged; all the money has been spent on the look rather than the comfort/taste.

Review 134:The original building has a lovely atmosphere. The room was spotlessly clean.

Review 135:Chaotic check-in procedure, use of iron but no fuse in it! Could hear quite clearly other guests through room wall. One evening meal poor value for money.

Review 136:Location & good breakfast.

Review 137:SLEEP, because during the night , next room neighbour doing sexual activity, and the children could hear as well,. the manage ment should try to sort the walls out. It was so loud due to the location of the beds probably, it banged the head board against our wall.

Review 138:location, food and staff
