Reviews for Coquetvale Hotel
Review 1:The menu displayed in the room was out of date. The food available was satisfactory but it was disappointing not to be able to get what was shown as available in the room having decided what to order.
Review 2:Fine period hotel. Nicely decorated. A pleasant stay.
Review 3:its quite an old place so the smell in halls were abit off but maybe it's just the old carpet? My room was up 3 flights of stairs:(
Review 4:I love the breakfast, the bed was super comfy, the beautiful fresh air and the location is roughly 40min from new castle city and the drive is abit shady so I wouldn't recommend this place for kids. Staff were super friendly and kind.

Review 6:Staff very friendly and informative, the room was spacious, quiet and well furnished, in room refreshments very nice, huge, comfortable bed and good quality pillows, sensible dressing table and hairdryer set up, with sensible mirrors. Breakfast excellent, great choice and hot. Beautiful views over the area.
Review 7:first morning breakfast, there was no staff and resteraunt area locked.. sorted once cleaner arrived about 9.00am. Breakfast was lovley when served. Received champangne and apology letter in Room when arrived back from day out. However did cancel reservation for evening meal due to this mishap. Next day breakfast service was excellent.
Review 8:location to coast, national park and dark skys clean rooms
Review 9:2 flights of stairs rather chilly in dining room location just a bit out from centre on cold evenings
Review 10:Bedroom good size breakfasts great evening meals very good staff very good
Review 11:the heating in the bedroom and bathroom was not working on arrival at 4.00pm, it finally came on at 9.00pm. In the morning it was hit and miss. Also the main menu in the dining room stayed the same all week, poor.
Review 12:The bed was comfortable.
Review 13:Staff were very friendly and helpful. The restraurant served a lovely Italian menu with the food a good standard. Our room didn't have a shower but it did have a whirlpool bath. the location was ideal for visiting Cragside,
Review 14:evening meal - wish we had gone out - I think staff and chef inexperienced, waited far too long, unorganised and my meal of lasagne was dried up and awful, husband's of fish and chips was good though. Shame place is nice and staff tried their best and were friendly - perhaps need more training or something!
Review 15:breakfast good - room clean, warm and very comfortable staff friendly
Review 16:A bit unusual to have no toiletries at all in room We would have been happy with a small bar of soap for handwashing. This may have simply been an oversight
Review 17:Location and breakfast
Review 18:Building is old, so don't expect everything to work well.
Review 19:The only Hotel in the town. Staff were very accommodating. We had 5 bikes to store and all went well. Bar area is lovely. Plenty of parking and close to town
Review 20:No lift. we had a third floor room, and my wife has a bad leg so getting her and our bags to the room was difficult. That said we had forgotten to request a low floor room and they were very full.
Review 21:Had to go up a lot of stairs to the bedroom, and then down again for meals. (The staff were however very willing to carry the cases.) The public rooms though nicely decorated lacked cosiness.
Review 22:Very friendly and helpful staff. We ate there every night and had enjoyable food and good wine at reasonable prices.
Review 23:Could not get WiFi in room or lounge bar area
Review 24:Very good breakfast, helpful and friendly staff. Great location for NT Cragside just 4min drive away, they also had a table in the hall with lots of info on other places to see around the area. Just a few mins walk to pubs and local shops in the village.
Review 25:they could do with a continuous toasting machine for breakfast time.
Review 26:The welcoming friendly atmosphere and the cleanliness of the Hotel, also the good choice and quality of local food they served.
Review 27:No hotel information in the room with an absence also of wi-fi info. Faulty toilet cistern which provided the noise of running water all night!!
Review 28:Comfortable bed in an extremely basic room. Did not sample the dinner menu but the breakfast was extremely good.
Review 29:Delightful building with loads of character features. Location is great being a pleasant short walk to the town centre, good car parking space. Spacious room.
Review 30:No shower in the room and could do with some updating, however I understand this is on going at this time.
Review 31:Friendly staff and made welcome throughout stay. Food good and location good.
Review 32:Put in attic rooms - had to watch our heads on the beams. No Lift - too many stairs. No shelves in bathroom, therefore nowhere to put anything. TV difficult to turn on and off remotely, and when it was on it sometimes turned itself off and/or the sound went. Fridge not on, on arrival but when you put it on, it was too noisy. Friday night was very noisy from other guests (wedding the following day). Didn't sell bottles of still water. No cornflakes for breakfast. Cooked breakfast the 2nd morning was not as good as the first night.....trainee chef apparently!
Review 33:The room was clean and the bed comfortable, though we would have preferred a bigger bed.
Review 34:I put their postcode into my satnav and it took me a mile away. No 3g in the area, had to ask for directions, took ages to find.
Review 35:Gigantic very nicely furnished hotel. It was curry night when i was there and i had 2 courses of brilliant for for £12.50. Staff all excellent. Gigantic room and biggest bed ive ever seen.
Review 36:Loved everything about it. Location was great. Food fantastic. Staff friendly and helpful. Truly nice place to stay. And very very good value for money.!
Review 37:We were disappointed by the restaurant meal. It's not a bad idea to concentrate on simple Italian pastas, but they have to be good! We asked for red wine and got white. To be fair, the hotel apologised and we weren't billed for the meal.
Review 38:It had a nice atmosphere. The building was Victorian (?) but the inside had been updated in a contemporary way that was in keeping with the age of the property. Plenty of parking space.
Review 39:The restaurant service was exceptionally slow. The food was good. The staff said they acknowledged this and we're going to address it.
Review 40:Location. Lovely bar/ restaurant area. Spacious rooms. Easy parking.
Review 41:Seemed a little short on staff.. reception desk was never manned, restaurant staff appeared rushed. A few bits in our room were not great - loose toilet seat, poor shower, tap with a bit broken off.
Review 42:The interior - the Victorian features in dining room, breakfast room, and bar. The food was very good.
Review 43:their was nothing to dislike
Review 44:A majestic small hotel much like a manor residence, with large comfortable rooms, excellent dining room, all good value for money
Review 45:Breakfast a let down and food needs to improve in general. King size bed was 2 singles pushed together not really a comfort sleep to be honest.
Review 46:Good location , friendy helpful staff
Review 47:Not a bad experience but our room had a few omissions when the decorating was done which spoilt the otherwise great appearance
Review 48:Excellent room. Restaurant was really good - not a huge menu but what they did do was superb. Staff were very friendly. Can thoroughly recommend the Northumbrian breakfast!
Review 49:We stayed in loft room (Craster) which was too warm. Also, being loft room, kept having to avoid rafters
Review 50:We had breakfast and evening meal - both very good. Staff were extremely polite and helpful
Review 51:only hand held shower with bath lack of staff minor adjustments to décor in bedroom / bathroom would reflect rest of hotel which is of a high standard one chair in bedroom
Review 52:location on offer pleasant staff when located
Review 53:Staff were pleasant but inexperienced hopefully they will be more competent as they gain confidence.
Review 54:We stayed in room 2 very comfortable room, plenty of space. Shower not very efficient.
Review 55:Nothing!
Review 56:Excellent service, especially receptionist who went out of her way and gave us a lift to Brinkburn Priory as we were unable to get a taxi on Sunday!
Review 57:I found the mattresses in room 6 hard and uneven which made sleeping less comfortable than it might have been. Lovely big room though
Review 58:Friendly staff, very helpful indeed. The odd menu I also liked. The restaurant is advertised as Italian but serves mince and dumplings, sausage and mash etc too.
Review 59:Stayed for surprise 60th birthday. Everything was fabulous except for the food with the evening meal.Served mine without anyone else so couldn't start as no veg or anything ..beef very tough.Disappointed.
Review 60:The location & staff were faultless, made us feel very welcome.
Review 61:Nowt
Review 62:Stayed hotel 21/6/15 Found room clean tidy and cosy, very helpful staff and friendly, stopped and chatted to you, looked like hotel gone and on going refurb quite high standards Italian restaurant within hotel not fan food so didn't try any but the breakfast was lush most from local produce Chatted to hotel manager, nice guy, asked our opinion, told him about signage to hotel, said on going with council keep refusing, told him put one farmers field just laughed good idea lol all in all good stay.5mins walk across bridge to centre Rothbury pubs shops etc great stay
Review 63:The staff are wonderful Nothing was too much trouble for them! Our room (2) had an enormous bed, sofa, tea making facilities TV, our bathroom was equipped with shower and a jacuzzi bath. The bed linen was clean and fresh and the towels provided were nice and large and excellent quality.
Review 64:Overheard one customer saying they had found some mould on the toasting bread at breakfast. We didn't find any but overhearing the comment was slightly off-putting. There would be some sense in reviewing the process for putting out bread for toasting.
Review 65:Lovely big room, tasty breakfast and a very friendly chambermaid
Review 66:Worn out mattress, damp stained walls, broken bathroom fittings and mould on the wall, breakfast cold and poor quality, cheap products! Not really show casing Northumberland! No signage for reception, staff not very helpful!
Review 67:Location which has always been a plus
Review 68:Quiet a few flights of stairs
Review 69:Pleasant friendly staff. Good value accommodation , with an excellent cooked breakfast (called a Northumbrian Breakfast) with good quality bacon , sausage etc. Pleasant views from our attic rooms , although several flights of stairs. Happy hour for evening meals until 6:30 were excellent value. Hotel management are making efforts to improve so thought good value & will return. Both long lost friend & family though meals were good value. Quiet Location in Rothbury & very accessible to village & National Park & NT Cragside.
Review 70:Bed was very hard and pump noises in bathroom.
Review 71:Very attentive staff particurly James-carried our bags up two flights of stairs-organised a dinner item for our breakfast!!
Review 72:Alnwick accomodation was all booked out on all sites, this place came up. It is south or river Coquet. Arrived late at night, when Rothbury was very dark - and tricky to find. So from the (A1) B6347(Alnwick)/B6344(Long Framlington / East) turn left at brown Swimming Pool sign (Just after Queens head, opposite Barclays bank. Then past Railway Hotel, over river bridge, turn left at T junction - it's on right as you have gone round bend. If you hit Queens Head, LLoyds or Turk you've gone too far). The rooms were large, as were bar / restaurant and breakfast room. Under new management (Tyrone from SA) after refit, looks a good place within 30 min of newcastle to host a project kickoff meeting - in area of outstanding natural beauty, there's a beer garden with a view geared up for BBQ etc. Spoke to newly elected MP, who knows about it, so presume restaurant good, but last orders were 9pm. Bfast 8am onwards.
Review 73:The shower was pretty useless in our 'superior' reoom
Review 74:The staff - young and friendly - all did their best though were sometimes a bit stretched. The food was OK without being outstanding.
Review 75:Breakfast set up was a disaster. Tea/coffee needs to come to table in appropriate pots of which they had none available. Each table needs a milk jug. Toast needs to come from the kitchen not from the toaster in the room which you had to get to. The hotel should not run out of any food item on the menu during breakfast especially when they know all rooms are booked and how many guests are staying. Car parking inadequate.
Review 76:Hotel very relaxing. Great location. Evening dinner - restaurant has great ambience.
Review 77:We were charged for a second bottle of wine that we didn't have, but eventually managed to get a refund. The plumbing was very tired.
Review 78:Excellent evening meal
Review 79:WIFI in room patchy at best. Bed a bit tired.
Review 80:Staff were friendly and welcoming, pleasant, reasonably priced meals in the restaurant. Room comfortable and clean, bed was huge but a bit tired.
Review 81:The wifi couldn't be accessed in the rooms unfortunately but I think this is something the hotel are working on.
Review 82:Friendly staff, comfy room and bed, very clean. Excellent breakfast.
Review 83:The bathroom in the room was very dated, there was nowhere to put your toiletries or clothes in the bathroom and the shower was very poor. The bedroom itself although very big was very sparsely furnished & decorated & lacked a little bit of something.
Review 84:The food was very good and the pianist was lovely in the restaurant in the evening.
Review 85:Holes in bathroom floor around toilet waste pipe, poor shower, poor toilet flush and fill, window difficult to open (Rm 7). No dinner available on Monday night. Breakfast OK but very self service and no fresh fruit.
Review 86:It was convenient and the room and bed were good. Evening meal at The Queens Head very good!!
Review 87:Wifi signal very poor but probably due to location
Review 88:The staff were friendly and the restaurant was both nicely furnished with good food at reasonable prices
Review 89:Couple of small things let our stay down. The shower wasn't good ran hot n cold and not very powerful. TV in our room was small and the bed was two single beds pushed together to make a double. Wasn't god lying on the crack in the middle. And also the restaurant was only open (winter hours) 12-3 for Sunday lunch no Italians or bar open during get our stay on a Sunday. Apart from that it's probably nicest place to stay in Rothbury.
Review 90:The food at breakfast was lovely. Nice area to dine in and all halls ways are nice and modern.
Review 91:Thought we were booking a hotel with an award winning Italian restaurant. Only offered a limited menu, not one shown on website. Facilities were under renovation and not ready for paying guests. Strong smell of paint. Charged for 3 course meal when only has 2 courses.
Review 92:Room was large & spacious with a nice whirlpool bath in ensuite.
Review 93:From the minute we arrived it was first class service and the staff were always on hand. The room was beautifully appointed and the only thing I could fault would be the bed as it was a touch too soft but luxuriously big. The biggest recommendation I can give is to stay in the hotel for drinks and food as they have excelled themselves and also the breakfast
Review 94:Minor things like chain on washbasin plug needed repairing. Bed was a bit creaky (but still very comfortable). Toilet cistern very slow to refill (a quick descale of the valve would probably cure this).
Review 95:Staff very helpful. Slightly out of town was good for us. Food excellent.
Review 96:Didn't think the breakfast was award winning but didn't spoil a nice weekend.
Review 97:This was a good little find. Food wasn't bad a couple of bad marks for breakfast but in all lovely location and a nice relaxing stay. Not bad value either.
Review 98:nothing to complain about
Review 99:the hotel was good and central for visiting town and surrounding areas where there is lots to see and do. would recommend this hotel for quality and friendliness of all staff would go again. good breakfast
Review 100:Noise insulation between rooms poor. Wifi only works in the restaurant and phone signal poor (this might be a plus for some).
Review 101:Staff absolutely fabulous, one particularly so.
Review 102:Regrettably the large sash windows would not stay open which led to a stuffy night (personal preference only). It would have been nice to see the bar open in the evening but quite understandable as we stayed at the end of October when the Hotel was quiet
Review 103:The warm welcome, spacious room and accommodating staff made the short break very enjoyable
Review 104:the shower not brilliant and the water didnt drain properly from the bath.Breakfast a bit chaotic, slow at replacing bowls, cups milk etc though the food was good.
Review 105:the location ,spacious room, the resturant, the breakfast, the staff.
Review 106:There is no lift - you have to carry bags up several flights of stairs. Although the hotel appears quite luxury for the price, the bathroom wasn't as clean as it should have been. E.g. the light pull in the bathroom was visibly soiled, and the bath fixture were semi broken. Also the shower pressure was terrible.
Review 107:The common areas in the hotel are very well presented giving this hotel a luxury feel. The staff were friendly. The cooked breakfast was high quality with local produce. The overall selection on offer was good. The hotel has a bar and restaurant and is set in a stunning location. They also have a lovely patio area for a summers evening drinks. The drink selection at the bar was reasonable. We didn't use the restaurant.
Review 108:Dining room not available both nights due to private functions, only found out when we arrived. Very small cheap TV Toilet took forever to refill Extraction fan from downstairs noisy all night
Review 109:Good size room and bed
Review 110:There are many stairs & no lifts !! Our room had a spa bath & no shower which some people would love but we prefer a shower.
Review 111:It was a lovely hotel in a good location a short walk from the High Street . The staff & food were excellent .
Review 112:Door knob on entrance door to room and toilet roll holder in shower room not fitted correctly. One spot light in shower room broken and was not fixed. No heating from radiator in room. No heating in shower room at all and nowhere to hang anything. Dining Room was very dark and smelt musty. Dining room was very dark and smelt a bit musty.
Review 113:The location in Rothbury was good. The quality of food at breakfast and dinner was acceptable. The bed was comfortable and housekeeping did a good job on a daily basis. Staff were friendly enough but lacked that little bit extra in ensuring guests were being given the best service.
Review 114:Cobwebs at the back of the bedside cupboard but everywhere else was spotless. Bar nice but dingy brown, but was told it was going to be redecorated shortly
Review 115:The staff were friendly, the location excellent, the rooms really nice and good size. Very clean apart from when I was looking for something that had dropped down the back of the bedside cabinet and there were cobwebs.
Review 116:Hotel a bit shabby. Lacking a lounge other than the bar. Wi Fi only possible most of the time in the bar.
Review 117:Location .Friendly staff. Good food in restaraunt
Review 118:Bathroom tired Shaver left in room from last occupant Multiple dry coffee / tea spillages not cleaned up Dirty marks on pillow and bed skirt
Review 119:Staff were friendly & helpful Food was good, big portions Breakfast good Good value for money Great location Outstanding welcome pack, lots of ideas for days out etc Wifi all over
Review 120:When we arrived the car park was in dire need of resurfacing to the extent that I nearly said to my husband turn around, let's go somewhere else. Breakfast could have been better. Some days the things we asked for didn't come, and we had to ask for them, ie missing out sausages or, scrambled eggs. And, they gave my husband beans when he didn't ask for them. Also, the room was okay but the bed was lumpy, thin mattress with springs popping up.
Review 121:The restaurant.
Review 122:Bedroom and Bathroom. Bedroom was located above the extractor fan from the kitchen and the noise was terrible, early morning till very late at night. Informed the staff after our first night but no offer of a room move! No shower curtain over the bath. No wifi reception in room.
Review 123:Breakfast
Review 124:Bar could have been better stocked, little choice of gins and no brandy at all. Wine list at meals also slightly limited, a couple of Italian wines worth trying and a token Australian offering. No lift, which didn't bother us but may some other people.
Review 125:Staff very friendly and obliging. Excellent breakfasts with good choice. Very good Italian menu for evening dinner. Room/hotel clean. Beds had good quality duvets and were very comfortable. Building listed and had some character.
Review 126:The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious with good public spaces. Breakfasts are cooked to order, not kept warm on a buffet. The hotel is under new ownership. They are busy updating it and some of the rough edges will be rubbed off very soon.
Review 127:Not for people with mobility issues. No lift and bedrooms on 2nd floor with only stair option. On arrival realised this was a problem for me and advised that I would not be able to stay a second night explaining the reasons why. I also could not use the bathroom facility as the shower unit had a raised step entry and the bath was not an option. In light of that I asked if I should not be required to pay for the second night booked. The general manager said she would check if this was possible and get back to me. She did not do so and on checking out the next day I was asked to pay the full amount for two nights bed and breakfast. I did so, and on return home wrote to the owner L Paterson - still waiting on a reply. Customer service a lot to be desired in this instance. Just for good measure the room was listed as a superior room - dont know why as this room (no 1) had a non working wall light, chipped mug for use with coffee, heated towel rail was hanging off the wall in the bathroom, broken bath panel at the end corner and the room entry lock was placed at an angle which made it difficult open the door on entry. The view from the window was superb or would have been if the windows were clean - cobwebs abound. Also secondary glazing installed and unable to budge - even if this could be done there was no way of opening the outside window. No fan in room for use in warm weather, which it was. Absolute let down.
Review 128:Ate in the Restuarant and food was good quality with fast service.
Review 129:Whilst understanding improvements to the hotel are underway, the actual entrance door to the hotel and poor surface of the entrance car park did not give a good first impression.
Review 130:The location, very central for visiting the highlight of Northumberland. Very friendly, helpful staff. Good food.
Review 131:Mould in bathroom. Cobwebs dirt and mould on windows. Poor reception / welcome. Car park badly maintained. Poor staff response to complaints. Breakfast very poor - veg options unavailable, even on second day and with prior warning of our requirements. "fresh fruit" in syrup? Bread for toast still partly frozen. Ordered breakfast without beans, offered extra mushrooms. Came with beans and no extra mushrooms. Tables unprepared and dirty - crumbs not cleared up.
Review 132:Italian restaurant - although salmon was unavailable.
Review 133:No internet in our room
Review 134:Checked in by a lovely girl called Adele , very friendly and she showed us to our room, no 10. The room was clean, furniture a bit dated but gorgeous bathroom. However, wifi was not available in this room? Some rooms yes it was and throughout the hotel, but not ours! One of the reasons we booked was for the wifi so we could plan our visit to surrounding areas. Breakfast was lovely, full cooked breakfast and also cereals ect. The hotel has a lovely outside eating area too although we didn't use this facility it did look very nice. Overall for the price we paid we were happy with our stay.
Review 135:A bit of trouble with plumbing on first night, but was soon rectified by changing rooms.
Review 136:All the staff were really friendly and helpful, nice rooms and good food.
Review 137:EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS HOTEL IS TOP CLASS FROM THE ROOMS TO THE ITIALIAN RES AND THE BAR WITH THE DECKING WE HAD A GREAT TIME THANK YOU TO ALL THE STAFF AT THE COQUETVALE
Review 138:A lot of stairs and no lift (had partially disabled person) and didn't realise was a tall building and had to climb two staircases to the first floor bedroom. The pictures on internet were deceiving. The decor was a little shabby and tired and therefore felt it was a little overpriced. Some of the decor was very austere and dark. Hotel and bedrooms were very warm and stuffy. Wifi signal was not possible to pick up for some of us - do not know why Was a long drive of main route and because we were only passing through a little out of our way. Not easy to find - the sat nav to postcode did not take us to the hotel and no signs to hotel in the town or off main road.
Review 139:Nice friendly and very helpful staff Food was good value and well cooked. Beds were very comfortable and bedrooms were very large. Nice views out of windows over valley
Review 140:Breakfast didn't suit me. I'm coeliac. Had taken my own bread for toast. Toaster very 'crumby'. (Cross contamination). Had some fresh fruit (not much as I wasn't sure how much anyone else would want and whether it could be replenished), and a plain yogurt.
Review 141:Very friendly young man on reception on evening of booking in. The town of Rothbury is lovely. A great surprise after travelling some miles over open country.
