Reviews for Abbington Hotel

Review 1:When we had been out for the evening we came back in the hope of having a nightcap in the hotel bar. But this was closed which was disappointing as this was one of the things that attracted us to this hotel!

Review 2:Friendly , homely and lovely Christmas decorations.

Review 3:There was no milk to add to the coffee in the room.

Review 4:We stayed in the bungalow annex this time which was very well equipped with items you do not usually find without extra charge e.g. shaving kit/dental kit.

Review 5:Decor in room not to my taste a bit old fashioned but the positives far outweigh this.

Review 6:Lovely welcoming staff and service, homely warm building, comfortable bed, fluffy towels and great shower. Nice bar/lounge area so you are not confined to your room. Excellent home cooked food (both evening meal and breakfast) which is really good value.

Review 7:Staying at Abbington Hotel is like staying in our own home. The professional and friendly staff makes the staying extremely pleasant, the position near the old town helps in finding restaurants and after work life, the internal restaurant offers a wide range of choices to eat, the Draught beer is really good and there is a good WiFi connection available.

Review 8:Staff were very helpful and happy to serve you. The hotel was clean warm and comfortable to stay in. Just like being at home. The breakfast was hot and plenty to eat. Would come again.

Review 9:N/a

Review 10:The hotel is very welcoming, the staff friendly and helpful. The breakfast is first class and good value for money. The hotel is dressed for Christmas and the outside looks just like a fairy grotto, very nice. We have stayed here before, and will definately stay again when we are in Stevenage.

Review 11:Bed needs changing, very soft and uncomfortable. Walls too thin, could hear intimate moments from occupants of rooms on both sides - could not sleep!

Review 12:Good location, good breakfast, rooms well appointed

Review 13:The room felt way too warm around 5-7am. The radiator had not been on much when we went to sleep.

Review 14:Very nicely decorated, pleasant room; good facilities (toiletries and tea/coffee/biscuits provided); bed was comfortable. Hairdryer included. Generous and tasty full English breakfast.

Review 15:Minor irritation was that the door on the wardrobe was very difficult to open, it was sticking, and one of the glass holder brackets in the bathroom fell off the wall. It would have been nicer if the heating in the rooms had been put on before our arrival as they took a while to warm up.

Review 16:Close to A1 jct. 5 mins from Stevenage, 10 mins from Hitchin and Knebworth. Family run hotel, nice decor, very comfortable, rooms spacious, excellent value. Great choice of evening meals, food was good and excellent value. Our group were pleased with the hotel and staff.

Review 17:Bedroom very cramped, couldn't get to wardrobe without climbing over one of the beds - didn't eat in restaurant in evening as other customer Jacket potato was frozen in the middle - Breakfast was average

Review 18:fairly clean, nice hot shower- good location for purpose - trouser press

Review 19:Onsuite window would not open, extractor poor. Pillows just OK. Needed light above vanity mirror, lighting in room poor.

Review 20:Good value for money. Wide selection at breakfast.

Review 21:Initial entrance into car park. No indication to spaces at rear. The heat of the bedroom even with radiators off was boiling. Window had to be opened for room to be cooled down.

Review 22:The whole ambience and courtesy. Piping hot cooked breakfast. Able to safely leave my car when up in London in hotel car park. Very kind of hotel owners.

Review 23:Clean, friendly, very comfortable bed. An excellent 5star breakfast selection. Highly recommend. We weren't there for the evening meal, so can't comment on that, but the Old Town was just a short walk from the hotel with a good choice of restaurants.

Review 24:A warm welcome from the owner and a great all inclusive breakfast in the morning served by a very pleasant member of staff. Having had a really good nights sleep.

Review 25:Not mad on the choice of décor, dining chairs let you sink too far, corridor carpet needs replacing or at least a jolly good clean.

Review 26:No mould in the shower, also clean otherwise.

Review 27:Expected large bed, patio and ensuite. Got a normal double bed, patio was a work in progress and ensuite was very very small.

Review 28:Pleasant staff, great breakfast and parking OK. Was also close to town and locations we required.

Review 29:Male member of staff on arrival not very welcoming and for the of rest of the stay very little conversation, seemed to prefer watching the television

Review 30:comfortable hotel, food very good, a very good chef

Review 31:A suggestion: if you are staying on your own - ask for the main house rather than the annex - especially if its dark evenings

Review 32:Friendly and comfortable. The food was good and plentiful. Car parking good.

Review 33:Reception on arrival, not a good evening or welcome. Guy on the desk was lacking charm or personality. Elements of the building in dire need of repair eg Conservotory. Bathroom window lock was broken and could not be secured, easy access for anyone from fire escape route.

Review 34:Location was good. Evening meal limited choice but good. Bar OK but quite small. Bed room was clean and comfortable. Parking OK.

Review 35:TV did not work, but not a big issue for us.

Review 36:Handy location near A1. Arrived late at about 8pm and were delighted that we were still able to get an evening meal after a difficult drive through London.

Review 37:I requested for a double bed and only got a room with two singles. At that point it was too late to change hotels. I even suggested moving the 2 singles together and I was warned not to by the managers. The staff seemed quite grumpy and not very friendly. I doubt if I'll be staying there ever again.

Review 38:Could do with a mirror in the room. En suite had 2 mirrors.

Review 39:Staff where very friendly & helpful. Breakfast was lovely and loads of choice. Room was good. Bathroom good but could do with a little maintenance. Was very clean.

Review 40:Having to ask repeatedly to have some heat in my room Having to pass between 2 smoking staff immediately outside the front door.

Review 41:Pleasant facility and staff and proximity to hospital

Review 42:A lovely old English hotel. Very nice décor and the breakfast vas very enjoyable. Whilst rooms are smaller, still very comfortable. I would stay here again. Reasonably priced.

Review 43:The ensuite shower room was a bit cramped and there was no bath mat which meant I slipped on the wet tiles (no injury though thankfully).

Review 44:Wide variety of choices for breakfast. Good car parking facilities.

Review 45:Other guests in building a little disruptive and spoiled what would have been a far better stay!

Review 46:Comfortable room and very good good breakfast included.

Review 47:Friendly staff, convenient parking, plenty of variety for breakfast, good wifi signal, very clean, good location only 5 mins from town centre, but quiet and peaceful.

Review 48:Rooms a little dated for my taste but clean and comfortable

Review 49:Friendly staff, good location for A1 and short walk to old town restaurants, short drive to station (5 mins)

Review 50:The additional block is lacking in character. I got food poisoning from some dodgy mushrooms at breakfast, and consequently had a dreadful sleepless 2nd night.

Review 51:Lovely appearance at entrance and gazebo. Rooms have good accoutrements, the owners are trying to offer good value.

Review 52:The en suite was too compact and bijou and having a disability it was difficult to move in such a confined space

Review 53:Friendly staff and location satisfactory for our two day stay Good breakfast.

Review 54:The home from home welcome, breakfast was relaxed and unrushed. The late departure meant we could have a rest after breakfast before a long and arduous journey home.

Review 55:Evening meal was not very nice, I had the special and it was not special and just about edible, think I would go out for dinner next time

Review 56:Room had everything you could want, and the owners had made every effort for the place to welcoming and comfortable. Staff were friendly and breakfast was great

Review 57:Smell of damp that was occasionally over-ridden by an over powering smell of air freshener, room desperately needs renovating paper hanging off, and tiles in a poor state.

Review 58:Staff frendly, if hotel refreshed would be good value for money. Breakfast was nice set us up for the day.

Review 59:This hotel us a little gem. A hidden treasure just off the end of Martins Way heading towards the old town of Stevenage. Too a while to find because its not in the old town. That's a good thing. Peace and quiet with a level of luxury not often found in small hotels. Staff customer service was first class. Would stay here again. Abdoluely.

Review 60:I had a room at the back of the hotel. Road noise could be an issue at the front of the hotel as it's the main road into Stevenage from the north.

Review 61:Very comfortable bed, fast wifi, good breakfast, free parking. 5 minute walk to the old town with its bars and restaurants if you don't want to eat at the hotel.

Review 62:The local area is quite run down and misrepresents the hotel approach....I was pleasantly surprised when I found a hidden gem of a hotel down a lane.

Review 63:Friendly and clean

Review 64:Some items on menu and in bar were not available. We had to complain about a motor switching on every minute next to our room. He switched the pump off over night.

Review 65:Bedroom too cluttered, had to move one bed to get into the bathroomwhich was really small with a sticking shower door that I thought wasgoing to break to get it wide enough to get in. We had a pint of largerfrom the bar which had loads of bits floating about in it, we noticedafter drinking half of it, we rang the bell to get somone to the bar awoman arrived so I told her about it. She looked at it said"OH" then poured it down the sink and that was it, Asked fortwo Jamesons whiskey which we like, took one taste... That did not tastelike Jamesons. Four people tasted it and all were convinced it was aScotch of some sort but it came out of a Jamesons bottle, if we arewrong then I apologize but I know my Irish. On checking out the chaptried to charge us for two nights instead of one.

Review 66:The breakfast was great.

Review 67:We would like to thank you very much for the hospitality you gave us on our 1 nights stay on Thursday 16.7.15. We felt very much at home. Our room was very clean & comfortable with a lovely full English Breakfast. All the staff were very hospitable & we hope to come & stay again soon. Regards Mr & Mrs P Smart. (room 11).

Review 68:The walls between rooms were not great at soundproofing, that and fierce door closers which meant they slammed shut. Room a bit shabby, rotten bath panel, unpainted filled holes in room plus very dusty artificial flowers

Review 69:Good breakfast options

Review 70:Staff were welcoming, polite and friendly. Rooms were clean and the shower was amazing!! Breakfast was plentiful - what more could you want from a B&B?

Review 71:Wallpaper pealing off walls. Mould on the ceiling of the bathroom. Scale deposit around flush handle of toilet. Cracked bath panel. Dead flies and dust webs. Bedside light not working. Beds (there were 3!) all uncomfortable. Not a patio, just a path. Hole in carpet. Got photos of all.

Review 72:It was clean and tidy. I had a kettle, mugs, milks, sugars, coffee, tea and some plain biscuits. Aged hairdryer. Could open doors to outside. Breakfast was ok.

Review 73:Breakfast was superb and plentiful. All staff friendly and considerate. The flowers in the garden were beautiful and despite being close to busy roads, it was peaceful.

Review 74:A little noisy from road but i am a very light sleeper a colleague had another room and said he heard nothing.

Review 75:Easy to check in Car park appeared secure room clean and tidy.

Review 76:Our bathroom was a bit on the small side but with so many extras provided (soap, lotions etc.), would not dream of complaining!!!!

Review 77:Needed to book in early due to us attending a wedding and wanting to get changed beforehand after a long car journey. Very helpful and a great little coffee place in the high street nearby. everyone could not have been more helpful.Really great breakfast but a little chaotic due to all hotel guests arriving at once for Sunday morning breakfast. I think I would have wanted to run away. Son of the house was great and working extremely hard, so keen to please. All in all a good experience and very happy to stay again. Great value for what we paid. Well done to the Team.

Review 78:the mattress was very very soft and pillows were very plump as i suffer from neck problems i found this a problem

Review 79:location was close to town centre. food was excellant staff very friendly.

Review 80:Bed very soft - we kept rolling into middle, so made it an uncomfortable nights sleep. En-suite tiny - shower really small - we are not large people (I am size 12 dress size) - any larger & you would possibly not been able to get into the shower let alone use it. The 'en-suite' was more of a cupboard with a wc, basin & shower, very small no room to move in the en-suite. Shower very powerful with no adjustable head - it had to be turned on by a digital switch at the back of the shower - not ideal. Our overall feeling was that the hotel would come unstuck if someone above a size 12 dress size booked this room as they would not be able to use the shower!

Review 81:Clean hotel. Room pleasant, good parking at back of hotel. Couple of issues with en-suite though.

Review 82:When arrived curry was on the menu and the smell was in the whole building - OK if you like curry but I don't

Review 83:Surprisingly comfortable hotel. Looked small but room size was better than I expected. Had a good size bath too

Review 84:Small, though very modern, clean bathroom but with restricted access and a tiny sink.

Review 85:Easy to find. Good parking facilities. Tea & Biscuits in room. Good Breakfast. Friendly staff.

Review 86:The room was too small for a single room. I found it claustrophobic. The noise of boy racers until lateish at night got my goat.

Review 87:OK, nothing to crow about

Review 88:shower had very poor pressure and was difficult to get set to the right temperature.

Review 89:very clean, nice staff and a nice place to be. In walking distance of Stevenage Old Town

Review 90:as stated the hotel was exceptionally clean, the breakfast was very good and plentiful, all the staff were very friendly, we will and have recommended to others and we will return later on in the year

Review 91:Wish breakfast was served a little later but that is just because I was lazy and hungover!

Review 92:Really friendly staff who were very helpful. Beautiful breakfast in the morning and comfy room with everything we required.

Review 93:Firstly I was almost off the site of the actual hotel in a house at the back of the property this meant walking outside to meet up with other guests staying at the hotel. Secondly, the shower cubical was broken with the sliding door not completely closing, also the upstairs bath didn't have a side panel and looked like it was half under construction. With this I had to ask a friend who was also staying at the property to borrow their shower.

Review 94:There was plenty of parking for the amount of guests staying at the hotel and the breakfast was good. The room was nice and clean and good amount of toiletries and complimentary drinks were provided. One nice touch was that there was a kitchen that could have been used if someone wanted to (I don't know whether this was available to all guest or just the people staying in the house section of the hotel).

Review 95:Shower was a little on the small time but good pressure and temperature

Review 96:One of the few hotels with everything you need in the bathroom. Forgotten toothebrush/paste no problem. Forgotten razor/foam /soothing balm not a problem. All inclused in ur room. Nice personal touch. Clean rooms and good food and reasonable prices.

Review 97:I have stayed in this hotel twice. The first time everything was a delight. The service was immaculate. That had to do with two ladies that were extremely polite and kind. I was very happy with that accommodation that I booked once again in the same hotel. This time I was very very disappointed. This time I came across with the owner. The owner had lost our reservation!! Because I cancelled my two-night reservation and I booked again for one night instead! For some strange reason he decided to overlook that and there we are with no reservation. He found us a room for one night. We paid that room cash on the owner. The next morning we were checking out when the owner asked us to pay for the room!!!!!!!! As I told him, we had already paid for the room the previous night! He said that it never happened!! Thank god we had the receipt. Even with the signed, from the owner, receipt he did not recall that payment at all!!! He said someone else gave us the receipt. And it was only half a day ago... I can not excuse him, if we had not kept that receipt then we would have paid once again the room.. Terrible behaviour...

Review 98:More than average breakfast, cooked on the spot. Very clean rooms, excellent service from two marvellous ladies. Not far from the old town.

Review 99:I didn't like the shared facility but I knew about that before I arrived and it was only for one night. I also didn't like the fact that bloody smokers will congregate immediately outside the doorways as if they're scared they're going to miss something without a thought for anyone else who has to walk through this disgusting dug! All hotels and guesthouses should be made to provide a SEPERATE smoking area where the smokers can go and kipper themselves to their hearts content!

Review 100:I liked the quietness of the area despite being near a main road. I also liked the breakfast next morning.

Review 101:It seemed more suitable for men than women. Most of the clients seemed to be male manual workers The extensive food menu was very heavy and traditional. The portions were huge. It would have been nice to have some light alternatives.

Review 102:Everything that you might need was there. the food was very wholesome and it was good value for money

Review 103:The shared bathroom in the annex is in need of repair, especially the shower screen.

Review 104:Pleasent surroundings and plenty of car parking. The staff were friendly and efficient.

Review 105:Bathroom was small... I'm a tall fella so struggled a bit

Review 106:Hotel was clean, staff friendly. WiFi was excellent...spent the evening working with no problems. I didn't partake of the meals so can't comment on that. I would happily use again though.

Review 107:Just 2 small points - firstly although our bedroom (Room 11) was adequate, with comfy beds, the bathroom was quite small and the sliding door to it was directly at the bottom of one of the twin beds. Also the large wardrobe door would not open fully as it was also only about 18 inches from the other bed. Although the location is good and only a short walk from Old Stevenage's pubs and eateries, that walk involved either crossing a busy dual carriageway or using a couple of subways, which I found a bit scary at night.

Review 108:Lovely freshly cooked breakfast with plenty of choice. Although we did not have time for the evening meal, I can only imagine this would have been of a high quality too. Parking was a plus point. Location close to Old Stevenage, with plentiful pubs and eateries.

Review 109:The walls are paper thin and we hardly slept a wink! You can hear the people in the other room snoring and also their tv (if it is on). In my opinion, the staff could have been a little more friendly too.

Review 110:The room was and en suite bathroom was absolutely stunning. It exceeded our expectations. We were thrilled about the generous supply of complimentary toiletries, tea and coffee and biscuits in the room.

Review 111:Nothing.

Review 112:We were a party of six attending a family funeral in Hertford and only needed one nights accommodation and this hotel fitted the bill perfectly. We were in three of the five rooms in the house and did not have ensuite facilities but that was no problem. The hotel is used by folk working in the area and there will be work vans and cars a plenty. Don't let this put you off because the happy atmosphere within the hotel more than makes up for the initial impression of a 'workman's' base. Breakfast is excellent and the evening meals are cheap and as you would expect, portion wise, for a working mans hotel. The staff and owners make the place a success.

Review 113:The fact we were accomodated in the annex bungalow; had to change rooms which were modern but not finished off.The first room tv didn't work, but credit to ther owners who immediately changed rooms for us. Unfortunate second room had bathroom door on hinges that didn't close properly and broken table lamp. Minus side was woken by noisy workmen /contract workers coming in late and keeping us awake. Breakfast on the greasy side, but edible.

Review 114:Staff very helpful and polite, location good near to the old town. Plenty of shops and restuarants within a short walking distance of accomodation. Rooms clean and modern but needed minor adjustments, hallways had paper peeling off.

Review 115:nothing :)

Review 116:On arrival we were greeted and quickly shown to the room which proved to be every bit as good as the adverts and previous good comments. The decor was great, gave it a much better feel than the usual travelodge types, it was warm, it was comfortable and the bed (i wanted to bring that home with us!) the water pressure in the shower wasn't very high but overall, a very good choice and highly recommended. :D

Review 117:It's just a pity that the TV didn't include radio as well.

Review 118:Excellent shower. Car park close to accommodation, which was quiet because of being far from main road.

Review 119:Room was great Bar was cosy and nice Restaurant lovely Food was good Breakfast excellent Staff really friendly and helpful All in all a fantastic stay

Review 120:warm friendly staff, comfortable rooms with a very good full English breakfast to complete our stay. this was our second stay at the Abbington Hotel, we will be back.

Review 121:It is so nice to have a fully English breakfast cooked to order and served to you at the breakfast table. Great location for walking into the Old Town plus ample parking. Thank you

Review 122:Being in the converted house out back with workman who came in late and made alot of noise waking us up at 2.30am. Radiator noisy, shared facilities had to wait till 7am for shower. Back door left open all night.

Review 123:The breakfast was very good, good variety. Nice cooked breakfast.

Review 124:Stayed in the annexe the room was very "old" looking, could probably just do with a little brightening up that's all. didn't affect the comfort

Review 125:The sink plug had not been cleaned for a while in the first room I was given. The porridge was not to my liking!

Review 126:The Abbington was very central to the centre of Stevenage Old Town. It had an attractive entrance and garden and the bedroom was comfortable. The staff were obliging and changed my room when I was unhappy about the room I was given in a bungalow in the garden.I could have had an evening meal provided if I had wished and there was a comfortable bar area to sit in if I had wanted.

Review 127:My Mother's room was very cold as the heating was not working properly in there. The rooms were in the annexe and one to go through the kitchen to use the shower and toilet, which was also very cold.

Review 128:Our room was comfortable and had a flat screen TV with freesat, good facilities for making a drink and was fairly quiet.

Review 129:Although the room was newly refurbished, the common public areas were in need of similar refurbishment (e.g. peeling wallpaper in hallway) The ensuite was very narrow which meant avoiding bashing elbows on the door or the mirror when drying was very difficult!

Review 130:Newly refurbished ensuite shower good choice at breakfast friendly courteous staff

Review 131:I have stayed at several hotels in the area, most were satisfactory: providing what I needed. However, the Abbington exceeded all expectations: superb accommodation and facilities, and a very nice breakfast. Altogether, a real on-the-move treat for me and my wife.
