Reviews for The Izaak Walton Hotel

Review 1:An under cooked meal but it was rectified straight away with excellent grace and it didn't spoil our experience of the hotel.

Review 2:We had a weekend away with friends and it was cold and rained continuously but the hotel was a delight. Fires, cosy bar, beautifully decorated, comfy lounges, lovely views. Staff friendly and helpful. We had a great time. A perfect winter getaway and a good weather stay will give a whole new experience for walking straight from the door and sitting outside.

Review 3:with a party of 17 ranging from 77 to 8 the staff looked after us superbly, with a family table for our meals, dried our walking boots, made us a birthday cake, provided gluten and lactose free dishes . In fact, nothing we asked for was ever too much trouble. We will be back.

Review 4:Booked a superior room with spa bath with booking.com was not given one (could not even store a makeup bag in bathroom as was so small and the shelve was' hygienically 'placed above the toilet system (nice place to keep your toothbrush beside the spare toilet rolls that took a third of the shelf - one slip and its in the toilet!) We were informed that we had been put in a standard room when we queried it as we left, this later on complaint to booking.com was pronounced a 'king' room and a offer of £5 per night (x3) was offered for a total spoiled weekend. The radiator in the room was touch and go about heating throughout our stay we notified them within an hour of getting in the room and was given a portable heater which we had to use throughout our stay, no effort was made to fix the radiator. The menu in the restaurant was so bad it was better to eat in the bar the last night ....when we finally found someone to serve us. That by and by would recommend the book meals were good and well presented. Being a member of a club that goes there a lot no doubt we will discuss this further. A very disappointing stay.

Review 5:The cleaning staff were very friendly, room was cleaned to a high standard

Review 6:Very bad experience and no apparent interest/concern from management in the problems we faced. Apart from other real problems, didn't get panoramic view room originally booked - hotel blamed Booking.com for delaying the booking and didn't answer on other problems. Neither Booking.com nor hotel resolved the issue - very poor indeed.

Review 7:The setting and hotel furnishing/facilities

Review 8:The front of house staff in reception could have been a little more welcoming.

Review 9:The location and the comfort the hotel offers especially for walkers is second to none.

Review 10:An outstanding hotel in a wonderful setting. The staff were excellent and the menu of a very high standard. The chef was away but his team did a brilliant job and understood my wife's gluten and dairy free diet. The rooms were unfussy but well appointed and comfortable. The new owners are undertaking a rolling refurbishment of the whole building and have done a great job of returning the hotel to its former welcoming self.

Review 11:Very little. Perhaps the bathroom was a bit stark but that's being extremely picky.

Review 12:The location couldn't be better - at the bottom of Dovedale and just a stone's throw from the famous stepping stones. Lots of great walks nearby and a lovely view from our room. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant and the bar was excellent.

Review 13:Bar is rather characterless and uninviting considering the potential, dining room could also do with some plants or features to break up the space. Lighting in corridors is quite harsh. Ugly high chairs!

Review 14:Great Peak District location and comfortable rooms. Restaurant/kitchen very capable with good menu and attentive staff. Rooms very comfortable - open fires are great.

Review 15:Expensive but worth it.

Review 16:Best location surrounded by beautiful greenter hills and sheeps on the pastures. I loved the canope bed and the air bath was heavenly The food was of good quality although limited selection it was beautifully presented and the taste was exquisite . We would give the chef a standing ovation definitely. I took my husband to Izaak Walton as a surprise on his birthday. The staff were lovely they left a birthday message on the door and even made a birthday cake with candles for him at such short notice (as I'd requested it only on our arrival ) My husband was immensely pleased that we had his birthday weekend at the Izaak Walton. We would definitely be returning there in summer so we can go for walks I would definitely recommend it to my friends and family.

Review 17:Dinner was overpriced for what we got. Needed another 3 courses for it to fill you up!

Review 18:Location was good for views buy would have preferred to have been in walking distance to a pub.

Review 19:We cannot fault this wonderful place. It was our 40th wedding celebration and we were made to feel very special. It was our first and hopefully not the last time we visit.

Review 20:No complaints at all

Review 21:Lovely location, 5 mins from beginning of Dovedale walk, very friendly and helpful staff, good food, especially breakfast, pleasant lounges to laze around in if it rains which it did

Review 22:Nothing to not like.

Review 23:This is the second time in 3 months that we have stayed here. The location is perfect for a country break, with fabulous views and access to myriad country walks. Our room was comfortable, clean and spacious, and the breakfast was really excellent. Special mention to waiter Sakthimohan who looked after us on both our stays; he is genial, friendly, attentive and a consummate professional. Receiving the quality of service he provides makes a 'good' experience 'great', and we look forward to coming back to The Izaak Walton for more of the same!

Review 24:Really dislike having a sheet to use along with a duvet, unhygienic as the duvet cover is obviously used by all guests as only the sheet will be washed.

Review 25:Lovely location, good bar and food, beautiful view from the room.

Review 26:We are confused as to the client base that the hotel are trying to attract. Restaurant food is to a 5 star rating but some staff do not seem to have the experience. It is in a fabulous Walking location so the clientele are walkers who do not bring clothes suitable for 5 star dining. The bar area however has not changed since reopening and tables suitable for eating at are very limited.

Review 27:Location and restaraunt food excellent. Lovely hill views from our room.

Review 28:Not having a lift, which was difficult with mobility issues. We were thrilled on the advert when it said a hydro-bath, however this did not work.

Review 29:The extremely comfortable bed and big bath. It as quiet and tasteful in a low key way. The food was delicious and the view from the dining room was breath-taking.

Review 30:Internet connection in room 38 sporadic although worked in the bar and elsewhere. Airbath did not work but not big issue.

Review 31:Friendly helpful staff, great location and good bar food. Restaurant food a bit overpriced. Would recommend the hotel to others.

Review 32:The coffee! Should not be hard to provide cafetieres of proper coffee, rather than tasteless watery version pretending to be filter.

Review 33:Glorious walks from the doorstep

Review 34:Dinner wasnt very hot one night but they didn't charge for our bottle of wine as an apology. Didn't like the guest who walked up to their room with very muddy boots on and left a trail of mud on the nice carpets.

Review 35:Lovely big room. Excellent service and lovely meals, the cooked breakfast was as good as I've ever had. They catered superbly for my wife's gluten free diet.

Review 36:Toilet did not flush Room telephone out of order - a problem, as there was no mobile reception. Given phone to use at reception instead. Quality of mattresses and pillows disappointing considering price of room

Review 37:Food quality, and service by restaurant staff, were excellent. Beautiful location and exterior (parking, gardens) Some lovely public areas

Review 38:The bar restaurant just does not functon well..... meals are not much pleasure. The ( so called ) curry did not impress and the rice seemed to be Aborio ! It's flavour was unpleasant.

Review 39:Charming and efficient manager/maitre d' . The restaurant is enjoyable, if a little pricey

Review 40:Room a little dated. Room above the bar a bit noisy. Sound insulation between rooms not the best.

Review 41:Good access to walks. Excellent food in the bar and breakfast.

Review 42:The bar room was a bit 'laminate' ! Cracking breakfasts and service .... Poor burgers for evening meal though !

Review 43:Excellent staff in particular Shura

Review 44:I didn't like the restaurant policy of only 2 or 3 courses - we only wanted a main and had to move to the bar. The bed was rather uncomfortable - two singles joined together.

Review 45:Superb location with stunning views. The hotel is very clean. Excellent meals in bar - friendly bar staff.

Review 46:Staff were excellent, friendly, helpful. The setting is incomparable. We walked out of the hotel, turned left, crossed a stile and were in the most beautiful national park.

Review 47:Barking dog at business premises about 100m away during the first night. - thankfully not repeated the second night.

Review 48:Quality of food - cooked breakfast in particular is excellent. Friendly can-do helpful team a credit to themselves and employer

Review 49:Sadly as I was travelling with a dog ,I had to stay in an inferior room on the stable block & was not allowed in the hotel itself, allowed only in the pub part which meant dining entirely alone and not enjoying the facilities at all. Staff did collect the buffet breakfast for me (for above reasons) which was a decent solution but I had to eat in a closed pub! This beautifully placed hotel is surrounded by fields of sheep; walking the dog proved very difficult as the path from the hotel to the best walks crossed a field occupied by a bull with a herd of cows and i did not consider this a safe option. I would call this hotel pet tolerant rather than pet friendly.

Review 50:The food both at dinner and breakfast was lovely.

Review 51:Our room was over the bar and they partied till 1 AM There was a wedding party that came in and they partied until 2. fortunately we had ear plugs from the flightl

Review 52:The general manager. She was wonderful

Review 53:Not a dislike but menu could be varied to prevent boredom if staying for several days.

Review 54:Wonderful location, very friendly staff, comfortable clean rooms, excellent food. truly relaxing stay would definitely visit again

Review 55:Breakfast tables being made up while we were still eating our dinner

Review 56:Fabulous location and beautifully appointed room. Lovely food and atmosphere in restaurant.

Review 57:We ate in the Dining Room the first evening and were disappointed that there was only a set 3 course meal with limited choice. The staff were not over attentive, we had to request a wine bucket for the white wine, and were generally ignored. The following night we ate in the bar but the menu was very limited.

Review 58:Hotel was in wonderful position. Very clean and staff outside dining room very friendly and helpful.

Review 59:The goats cheese tart was bland - no goats cheese in sight! The girls serving dinner in the Dovedale Room were poor - they didn't seem to know what they were doing.

Review 60:Lovely location, loved all the different areas to sit both indoors and out. The staff generally were warm and welcoming.

Review 61:Touchy toilet plumbing. Room at back very vulnerable to bellowing cows. Slow dinner service.

Review 62:Lovely location. Provides easy access to beautiful areas. Very good breakfast.

Review 63:Cobwebs on the light as you entered the room...and curtains wouldn't close completely as I think the top was broken, very small problems.

Review 64:Wonderful location, good food. Staff helpful and courteous....attentive but not "in your face"

Review 65:The room booked said "Mountain view"- which it was just about technically-but the primary view was of the other accommodation bloc k of the hotel. It was not what we had expected. There are many steps to accommodate the changing floor levels which could be a problem to those with mobility or sight issues.

Review 66:Very helpful staff.

Review 67:Nothing

Review 68:Location was fantastic for Dovedale walks. Tranquil setting. Staff were really knowledgable, helpful and friendly. Great food and good selection of local ales

Review 69:Excellent location, large comfortable rooms. Lovely views from garden seating area. The staff were very efficient and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble.

Review 70:Nothing bad.

Review 71:The hotel is in a superb location approx 15 mins walk from the stepping stones in Dovedale and panoramic views. Very friendly hotel with excellent food. Hope to go again next year!

Review 72:Only lack of stair rails on some staircases. A lift may be something to consider in the future as most visitors were more mature and found difficulties on the stairs.

Review 73:The location is superb and the staff were very friendly. The food was excellent.

Review 74:Although £40 extra paid for "mountain view room" we were initially given a much smaller room at the back of hotel (ie a standard rm.) but rectified immediately - Wife couldn't reach bathroom light-pull or shower controls

Review 75:- Atmosphere - Food - Service

Review 76:The only problem we encountered was the shower over the bath which was quite low down, I am only 5'2" and struggled to get underneath it plus the water pressure was not very good.

Review 77:The location is stunning, the staff were very friendly and accommodating making guests feel welcome. The choice of either eating in the restaurant or the bar for an evening meal was very good, especially important due to the location of the hotel. We chose to eat in the bar which provided a good menu of very good food.

Review 78:The bathroom was somewhat tired compared with the standard of the other decor and could do with upgrading. The toilet seat was flimsy plastic and the shower temperature and pressure were susceptible to large, sudden variations when users in other rooms showered or flushed the toilet. Installation of better quality power showers would go a long way to addressing this. Also, a member of staff had failed to turn up for reception duty on the morning we checked out. this meant that the stand in receptionist had to double up as breakfast waitress with consequent delays in service- through no fault of her own. This was a shame since these shortcomings (which would seem relatively easy to address) detracted from what would otherwise have been an almost perfect stay.

Review 79:The location was superb with wonderful rural views. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food in the restaurant and for breakfast were excellent. The room was well appointed and the bed was comfortable

Review 80:The rooms are desperately in need of refurbishment-although very clean, they clearly have not been upgraded in years! Our son's room was number 10, directly above the bar and he and his fiancé were kept awake until 1pm when eventually they had to complain about a noisy party. I think this needs to be flagged up when you book and the rates for this room should be cheaper!

Review 81:Dinner was very good; the staff friendly but efficient; public rooms were comfortable with excellent views; the gardens well kept in a perfect setting; breakfast very good.

Review 82:The free wifi is a joke - its worse than the old dial up. The management (who shrug their shoulders at the issue) say they have to share a single line with all the rooms so each gets 20Kb a sec, rubbish. Get more lines! It's not a place for business people to work online.

Review 83:The location for walking is excellent. The breakfast was excellent too. The room was fine but the decor a little tired

Review 84:had dinner in the restaurant was ok but nothing fantastic. Room rate seemed expensive. Didn't like shampoo bottles and soap dispensers on wall.

Review 85:location was fantastic, room was big and clean, bed comfortable and breakfast very nice.

Review 86:The rooms are old. Its's like stepping back to the 1950's as is the decor in the dinning room. The hotel location more than makes up for this but it needs some money spending on it. This hotel is for mature couples and groups not for young families. Great location but nothing doing in the bar scene at all.

Review 87:This hotel has a scenic location with great walks right by the property including the famous stepping stones. The staff are friendly and the food in the restaurant was fantastic with local produce. The lamb was to die for. Its' quiet maybe more for the mature than family. Izaak local beer was up there with the best .

Review 88:The Hotel is short staffed and some areas were not really very clean. e.g. Flies all over the dining room window sills, cockroach on bathroom floor and spiders in the bath.

Review 89:The comfort of the bed!

Review 90:Grossly overpriced; an inn trying desperately to be a posh hotel but failing miserably. Restaurant food terrible, but breakfast ok.

Review 91:Location is great, almost next to the stepping stones.

Review 92:Generally the room was extremely clean - absolutely clean surfaces and carpet, but I had to mark down as I had to ask for someone to come and reclean the bath tub. When I tried to run a bath, hairs and other floating debris appeared on the water surface which was a bit icky. Partly it was due to it being a spa bath as the lady explained is harder to clean, but there was also white deposit on the scum line round the bath that came off on my hand. The lady apologised, cleaned the bath and we were given a free glass of wine though which was nice. I'm sure the issue will be rectified for future guests. The only other thing was the double mattress which was rather thin with no support, you could feel the solid bed base when you sat on it, unfortunately we did wake with a rather aching backs the first night. There was a single bed in the room with an extremely good mattress and the second night I used that and was very comfortable. The hotel seems to promote weddings a fair bit which is understandable as it is a good source of revenue. We were warned there was a wedding on the Saturday night when we made the booking and that there may be noise until 1am. Overall, yes we could hear the music but not the guests voices, and we didn't mind because we had taken the room on that understanding and were prepared for it. One tip for the hotel though (and not saying as a complaint but something it might be worth bearing in mind for future guests) is that it is the DJs voice on the microphone most of all that carries through the hotel, and whilst you can doze through the music, when he spoke, especially his closing "thank you everyone hope you had a good night" on the microphone at 1am carried very loudly into the rooms. Just mentioning really in case that can be looked at for future guests. Perhaps the 1am "thank you" could be done without a mike.

Review 93:Absolutely beautiful spot. I would definitely stay here again. The staff were helpful and the hotel in general was very pleasant. Generally the room was extremely clean and the guy serving breakfast was only too pleased to help and went the extra distance - for example to get me hot milk for my coffee.

Review 94:Conveniently located close to the Stepping Stones, the hotel sits in the beautiful Peak District area with its own sheeps and cows. Restaurant and pub on site, so very convenient for travelers.

Review 95:Beautiful position overlooking Thorpe Cloud and a short walk to Dovedale stepping stones. Very comfortable with good food. Our bedroom had a view over the garden. Ideal for a short stay but menu choice could be difficult if you were there for more than a few days.

Review 96:The serving arrangements for dining are not discrete with the kitchen itself being exposed to diners every time waiting staff enter or leave the kitchen. This gives more of a sense of a refectory or canteen than the fine-dining experience which is advertised and which the quality of the food and its general presentation otherwise fully justifies. Reversing the swing of the kitchen access door would largely resolve this negative feature.

Review 97:Where it is in beautiful surroundings

Review 98:We only booked for two nights!!

Review 99:The evening meal in the restraunt was excellent even though the chair fell apart while sitting on it!! Apparently they are replacing all chairs.

Review 100:Nothing it was all excellent

Review 101:Everything. We booked this hotel for our anniversary and it was superb. The great location meant it was possible to do some walking from the hotel to Ilam Park and the Manifold Valley and also up Dovedale. Evening meal was brilliant too and very special for a special occasion.

Review 102:Can't be helped, but no mobile phone signal at all.

Review 103:Lovely mountain view from window. Very close to Dovedale stepping stones. Fantastic three course meal in the restaurant - the food was exceptional.

Review 104:One of the receptionist was not very attentive and you could tell she would rather have been somewhere else. Didn't listen and kept looking at her computer. The fish and chips in the bar area had soggy batter and the fish wasn't flaky put us off having evening meal and the mattress on the bed was too soft.

Review 105:The location of the Hotel was excellent and the staff at breakfast were very friendly and efficient. One of the best breakfasts we have had. The room was large and very well decorated - recently refurbished to a high standard and dog friendly.

Review 106:Telephone in room was not working and was necessary because no mobile phone signal. Receptionist was helpful and let us use hotel phone but it would have been easier to have had a functioning phone.

Review 107:Location, fabulous views views, country house style, great breakfast and professional and friendly staff.

Review 108:When we booked in to our horror the double superior room I had booked was in my husband's name only. Not clear when booking. I assumed I was the principle guest together with my husband as stated. We ended up having to pay another £120. never had this problem before.

Review 109:The location of the hotel. Stunning scenery.

Review 110:HAVING TO WALK THROUGH DINING ROOM (OR GO THE LONG WAY ROUND UPSTAIRSTO ACCESS BEDROOM AT MEAL TIMES)

Review 111:VIEW FROM BEDROOM OF MOUNTAINS AND RURAL SCENE. NICE DECOR IN PUBLIC AREAS AND THE DINING ROOM. EASY ACCESS TO WALKS IN THE AREACOUNTRYSIDE LUXURY

Review 112:wi-fi was a bit intermittent - but not surprising in that location!

Review 113:fabulous location, pretty gardens, friendly, caring staff, great refreshing independent hotel which is characteristic of the area with log fires farm animals in the vacinity. Delicious food, well worth eating in the restaurant.

Review 114:Absolutely fabulous stay - we had room 14 which had fantastic views (and an enormous bed). The weather was perfect which made everything even more idyllic, amazing views from beer garden at front. We had planned on a trip to Ashbourne for dinner but didn't want to leave so stayed and very glad we did. Breakfast also lovely.

Review 115:Very comfortable, extremely helpful staff, quiet and no intrusive music, lovely situation amid the hills and the food was excellent. Our standard room was good value. We would definitely stay there again if in the area.

Review 116:The Location was excellent. Wonderful views from the restaurant and the food was well cooked and well presented. The building has retained some of it's original features.

Review 117:The bacon & sausage were very salty on our leaving day. Previous breakfasts were very good.

Review 118:Friendly staff and mostly good food. Good location & lovely views.

Review 119:Room a little tired! Need better curtains.

Review 120:Food excellent. Continued refurbishment would freshen up the room we were in. Staff helpful and friendly

Review 121:The room was quite small. The bathroom smelt of bad drains. There were no other people of our age staying there.

Review 122:The location was amazing. The bar food was really good. The bar staff were helpful.

Review 123:Service a bit slow and muddly, not all meals served at the same time and a few errors with actual meals (what was ordered).

Review 124:The location - brilliant as a base for walks

Review 125:Not enough storage in bathroom. Tables in Dovedale Bar not fit to eat off., sticky and dirty with no covering. Curtains in room require a service so they work properly. Room closure on main door too powerful and door slams. Some food in the Dovedale Bar looked and tasted awful. (Toad in the hole). Management did not care when customer left a day early due to stomach problems.

Review 126:I decided to visit the Izaak Walton Hotel with my wife after having afternoon tea there last year. We thought we would try the accommodation as well this time. The room we had No;26, was very nice with views out across to Thorpe Cloud with a second smaller window facing Bunster Hill. I will say at the outset that I am sure they have a staffing shortage, as we did not see many different staff. The reception was good, the parking was good, and the bed was exactly what we asked for in it being a large double. The furniture would have been better had people not placed hot cups on polished wood. As such a glass top would be beneficial to prevent more damage. The Bathroom was adequately furnished except, there was nowhere to place any belongings or toiletries other than a tiny narrow glass shelf. The main curtains in the room did not operate properly with the cords .(I expect someone has forced them at some stage). They need looking at. The door to the room had no lock that worked on the inside and the closure arm was too powerful making the door slam really loudly. Downstairs are two restaurants one being the Main Dining room or Haddon Restaurant and the other being the Bar restaurant or Dovedale Bar . As the menu on the Haddon was not to our liking, containing more Nouvelle Cuisine type offerings, we chose the Dovedale Bar as the choice seemed more. When we asked for a table we were told to go to one we had first seen through the window on our arrival at least two to three hours beforehand. We had noticed it was covered with plates and crockery from a previous diner. It had still not been cleared . I had to let them know and also ask for the table to be wiped clean but it was still dirty and sticky afterwards.Next we chose the Stuffed Izaak Walton Burger Homemade Beef Burger stuffed with Buffalo Mozzarella on a Toasted Brioche Bun, Tomato & Chilli Jam, Double Cooked Chunky Chips & Izaak Ale Battered Onion Rings £13.50.

Review 127:We had booked Friday to sunday and it was disappointing to find that on the sat there was a wedding in the hotel which was to take precedence over the normal residents. We were looking forward to the fine dining experience again on the Sat night only to find we were relegated to a bar area as the wedding party had full use of the dining area and also all the small lounges . we all felt as if we did not matter and at no time did anyone apologise . we asked to speak to the duty manager several times but were told no one was available. This was hard to understand with a full scale wedding taking place .On the Sun morning there still was no one available . This is clearly unacceptable in a hotel of this standing and ruined our experience .

Review 128:Food excellent . spacious room and excellent bathroom .

Review 129:Small and very tired bathroom; WC far too close to wall / radiator; dated wash-basin from the 70's? Reception desk - tired. Bar lacked atmosphere.

Review 130:Location, good food and car-parking.

Review 131:The bathroom was a bit tired but very clean and the toiletries etc limited for the price of the room, but cost effective as they were on the wall- difficult to get body wash into the bath!

Review 132:The staff were friendly and the hotel was spotless- a credit to the team. I contacted them the night before and they gave us a lovely room with a great view

Review 133:Furniture and furnishings very tired

Review 134:The receptionist was the most friendly and helpful young lady I have had the pleasure of of encountering, having travelled extensively - worldwide

Review 135:A beautiful location and an hotel with all the facilities to make a stay in in the area very enjoyable and memorable. The evening meal was really excellent and served by an efficient and friendly maitre d' and staff. To be commended. Our very comfortable bedroom with mountain view was just what was required and had all necessary facilities. I appreciated the bottle of water prepared on site.

Review 136:Non really. Male bar staff could have been better in terms of attentiveness - once ir twice we had to go and find them!

Review 137:Breakfast was excellent with a wide choice. Bar meals we really good value for money. Didn't eat in main restaurant for dinner so can't comment but the menu looked great

Review 138:This hotel is situated in Dovedale and has lovely views all round. The staff were all friendly and helpful and the food is good. We stayed at the beginning of May when the lambs were quite new and it was a huge pleasure to watch them. It is only a short walk to the River Dove and the Stepping Stones. I would avoid visiting them on a bank holiday though as it gets very crowded down there! Go later in the day when the crowds have gone. We enjoyed sitting in the garden having a drink in the sun and taking in the views. If you are fit go up Thorpe Cloud it is a steep climb but not long and the view is worth it!
