Reviews for The Elgin Hotel
Review 1:The hotel was not up to par, the room was ok if old fashioned but needed a good hovering, the bathroom had mould on the shower curtain and the bathroom fan didnt work, the bedside lights didnt work the bath panel didnt reach the floor, there was black mould on the wooden bath panel and the grouting looks like it was done by a child. There was no wifi even when I was at reception and was told by staff it was just one of those things even though it states there is wifi. I would not recommend to anyone at all. It offers room service at booking.com but only a dinner menu in the room without any prices on it. No breakfast menu. Avoid Room 4
Review 2:The View was nice but that,s the only good point
Review 3:Having arrived at 11 pm tired and hungry we were greeted and supplied with sandwiches and REAL coffee. The room was comfortable and the breakfast was very good. I will recommend this hotel to my friends.
Review 4:Pubic hairs in the bath and on bath mat, towels where clorty, bed was queen size and had no duvet, and sheets where dirty. No bacon for the breakfast and also the house rules where ridiculous lipstick stains and lip stains on mugs and cups
Review 5:The television with built in DVD player
Review 6:The room was a bit chilly. Booking.com stated the hotel was 9.2miles from Livingston but my husband clocked it as over 20 miles
Review 7:Nice welcome, comfortable bed and good breakfast hotel is in a lovely setting
Review 8:Sink still had someone's hair in it and there was previous residents things on the bedside table.
Review 9:The hotel setting, staff bent over backwards to help with my 2 young kids as there was no lift.
Review 10:the room was small and dated, the shower was very small, the reception we got was poor the manager was very remote with no people skills, the bar prices were too high for the type of hotel, not the Ritz!
Review 11:the breakfast was very good ,the staff were pleasant.
Review 12:Internet was quite poor
Review 13:Nice comfortable rooms, good facilities, good breakfast and friendly staff (the owner is always up for a chat over a glass of scotch) Very nice and quite area, with a playground across the street.
Review 14:very friendly and helpful staff. nothing was too much trouble, even keeping the restaurant open for us as we arrived late.food was well presented and tasty(steak pie) room comfy and quiet car parking was good (we have a luton van)
Review 15:Small room, very small cramped dated bathroom, bed/mattrass seen better days, had to go looking for someone so we could get checked in after ringing bell and phone a number of times after waiting at least 15/20 min, slow to get checked out aswell, same person who seemed very blazay and not interested, said Internet access but couldn't seem to get connected anywhere in building
Review 16:Location, pet friendly, good meals, breakfast staff nice and friendly,
Review 17:The hotel had a private function on during our stay which started at 19:30 and finished at 1am! Unfortunately, our room was situation right above the function room so it was very loud and we couldn't sleep until it had finished.
Review 18:lovely picturesque location! very quiet area and friendly locals
Review 19:Although wifi was free it was only good in downstairs area once you are in rooms it was non-existing very poor
Review 20:Good location with excellent views and staff friendly and efficient.food was good and fresh. rooms were of good size although good with a bit of modern touch
Review 21:We moved on to stay at a hotel in sterling.. we both wished we stayed the extra night at the elgin and travelled to sterling we will be back
Review 22:How nice the staff were.
Review 23:Feathers protruding through pillows
Review 24:Location , Staff and Meals are first class. Staff very friendly and willing to help. Restaurant Meals were excellent with wide variety of home-cooked meals.
Review 25:The wifi password was not included in the room information pack. Room a little dated. Duvet did not have a cover. No view from window . breakfast good
Review 26:Shower excellent, room clean. 2 small bottles of water, nice thought, iron and board in room
Review 27:Overall the staff were very good. Very friendly. However some lacked a little detail. But wouldn't put me off staying again.
Review 28:Ideal location for many places of interest. Easy to find. Room very comfy & the food was gorgeous. Would definitely stay again!!
Review 29:The only thing we would have liked the wifi in the room but due to location we understood that sometimes this is not possible.
Review 30:Staff so friendly and accommodating, location beautiful, food good
Review 31:The ensuite, in my room, can't comment on others as I didn't see them, could do with some modernising. Staff were very pleasant once found, but could be a little elusive.
Review 32:So quiet. Staff were pleasant & the place was clean
Review 33:The rooms are a bit old fashioned and in need of upgrading. The en suite is the same but very clean.
Review 34:We liked the location in a very quaint little village close to Edinburgh. The friendly, helpful staff helped to make our visit very pleasant.
Review 35:Nothing like the photos on the website.. Carpets old, stained, patched with black tape, everything is very dated and gives the impression that it's not cared for. Waiting staff was friendly, however, we didn't get what we ordered, coffee was forgotten and everything seemed to be cooked from frozen. On the other hand, the stay or the dinner was not exactly cheap. The hotel has been running for over 200 years, it could have a great potential if the owners actually invested money in it. In the present state it's just a sad old building... Shame.
Review 36:We were a late arrival and asked for something to eat in the form of cheesy potato wedges - which they were happy to provide us with but they looked and tasted like they had been under the grill for many, many days!
Review 37:They allowed pets Breakfast was okay. No problem with late arrivals - we were around 8 30pm.
Review 38:We were there for a wedding did not like after a hour of being there u ran out of a paticular drink u should have been well stokcked up
Review 39:The breakfast was good the rooms were clean
Review 40:not keen on room 1 or 2, but that is only because they have frosted windows other wise the rooms are large and very comfy large bathroom as well, great for 1-2 nights stay
Review 41:the fact we can bring our dog with us is a bonus, the breakfast is huge and plenty of choice, the rooms are lovely and the better rooms have sofas , there are tea making in the rooms with milk and tea bags replaced everyday, our room was lovely and overlooked the sea, beds are comfy the meals are lovely and well cooked, never had one poor meal while there and this is our second time, the staff are lovely and nothing is too much trouble, if there is ever a problem then they sort it out quick, the bar is nice and has plenty of choice as well, the high tea on Sundays are well worth the money, again plenty of choice, and as many pots of tea as you want, think we went through 3
Review 42:Better selection of fruit for breakfast, ( grapefruit, orange, prunes & red fruit compote)
Review 43:Location for our use. The hotel is good for what it costs, central for all. good selection of cereal.
Review 44:I arrived late 1night as the hotel I usually stay in had not received my booking,my booking was made online and as I arrived I felt a great burden lifted from me the reception was a warm welcome shown to my room which was very nice the restaurant was just finishing service but I was made welcome the food was excellent the haggis starter was lovely, the breakfast also very nice. The Elgin was a truly traditional hotel of the highest standard, and if they have dogs we will return for a weekend break again thank you
Review 45:Our romantic trip ended too soon!!! Could have stayed longer.
Review 46:Staff were friendly, excellent choice of food available in Restaurant with vegetarian options always available, salad bar was first class, fresh, plentiful, homemade coleslaws were scrumptious. Would recommend Homemade Steak Pie, which was delightful. The bar area had extensive range of popular malt whisky, staff even catered to our request for Jaegermeister !
Review 47:It was a little bit difficult to reach the hotel because of our tom tom and a certain lack of indications on the road. The stairs were a little bit uncomfortable and the Wi-Fi coverage was really poor, not reaching the rooms.
Review 48:We choose this hotel because Stirling (our first choice) was fully booked in those dates but, despite being a little far from the city, our stay was fully satisfactory. Special mention to: Location Breakfast Beds Manager
Review 49:Wifi was average - best in lounge and bar
Review 50:The staff were so lovely and helpful, especially Kimberley and Kate. Food was fantastic. The grounds and location were beautiful. Such interesting local history and sights.Would love to visit again; will recommend to friends and family
Review 51:Wifi not in all the rooms.
Review 52:Superb quite location. Good public transport connection.Lovely bay nearby.Visted the Commonwealth games and Fort William. Friendly staff.
Review 53:We had a great stay. The hotel is situated in a lovely location with views out to the river. We had a room with a view and the lovely dinning room also has views over the river. The staff were very polite ,helpful and could not do enough for you. It was a lovely restful haven to return to after travelling to the Commonwealth Games.
Review 54:The hotel has a beautiful setting with great views over the Forth. The staff were all welcoming, friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were excellent and high tea a good option for families. The hotel welcomes all ages and we will certainly go back.
Review 55:Fantastic hotel, lovely room and staff so friendly and attentive. Breakfast brilliant and freshly cooked to order which I loved as I Don't like buffet breakfasts
Review 56:this was an excellent hotel for the purpose of my visit, beautiful surroundings tranquil and a lovely view of the forth road bridge ,( the reason for my visit) I could not have chosen a better place .
Review 57:The en-suite bathroom was a bit cramped. Clearly a bedroom had been given en-suite facilities at a later stage.
Review 58:The position was good, above harbour and Limekilns village below. The staff were attentive and helpful
Review 59:Nothing to dislike.
Review 60:My sons and I very much enjoyed our stay - the room was comfortable, there was abundant hot water and a good shower in the bathroom and the beds were comfortable. The restaurant is excellent, providing superb breakfasts and dinners. Lovely peaceful location, close to the Firth of Forth and convenient for both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Friendly and helpful staff. This hotel was perfect for our needs and we would recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
Review 61:Lovely hotel and beautiful location. Stayed here last year and the rooms have since been beautifuly upgraded with new kingsize beds and redecorated. I see a big difference and alot of effort been put in to upgrading the hotel while still keepin the nice country house hotel theme. Highly reccomend upgrading to a sea view room. The view is well worth it.
Review 62:Lovely spacious comfortable room. Fantastic view. Best breakfast I have had in a long time in a hotel, fresh and cooked to order. Dinner in evening was delicious too. Staff very helpful and friendly will definitely use this hotel when back in the area visiting family.
Review 63:No porter staff. Narrow passages with big cases - I know that can't be helped. They put a aromatic thing in the bedroom and I hate them! We had to open the windows for ages to get rid of that horrible smell. I hate chemical perfumes and they make me feel ill. I wish hotels would realise that there are two people and two cases and there needs to be two racks for the cases, and space to put them. We had to put one case over by the lounge = nowhere else to put it.
Review 64:It had a bath, plenty of cupboard space to put things, nice view, pleasant dining room and food good, staff helpful, freshly cooked breakfast. Lounge was nice and table for computer.
Review 65:Nothing.
Review 66:Extremely friendly and genuinely helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was excellent with a good range of choices ( loved the kippers ). Accommodation was adequate and the lounge area was comfortable and quiet. A very peaceful and tranquil hotel which Pam and I will certainly visit again. Especial thanks to Craig who gave that little extra time and attention during our stay.
Review 67:Hotel needs a good cleaning, breakfast included half a square sausage, half a slice of black pudding and half a slice of haggis. Bathroom was only big enough to be used as a storage cupboard. This place is grossly overpriced for the pittance they provide and in no way could it be considered value for money.

The Fine Print
Due to the village location of the hotel, connectivity to some mobile networks and the free Wi-Fi can be problematic from time to time.
