Reviews for The Gate Hotel
Review 1:total confusion from staff when i arrived, attention to detail is not evident. With 1% of professional attention this Hotel could be number one hotel in Stevenage.
Review 2:position of hotel is excellent, the structure of hotel is a gem which has the potential to be absolutely outstanding.
Review 3:the hotel is situated in a beautiful location , surrounded by nature . services such as buses are within easy reach . I found staff very dispinibile and yet discreet . I will definitely return !
Review 4:Terrible service. No ice or lemon or draught ale in bar. Food stopped by 8.30. Reception lady rude. Got given wrong room. No one came to reception only spoke to us on phone. Bed lumpy and soft room and decor dated and tired looking. Corridor stunk of cigarettes. Don't stay find a premier inn
Review 5:Location. Good local pubs
Review 6:Unclean, very dated (not the nice, Instagram-type of vintage everyone hopes for), quite creepy - the carpet had little white stain by the bed (hate to think what that could be!) the bed-sheet itself smelled quite dusty and had a massive hole in it. There were cobwebs all around the room. The light in the hall took 5 minutes to turn on so we spent most time trying to find our room in the dark. Door didn't lock properly, and it was wide open when we arrived.Slept all night with a light on out of fear that someone could walk in at any point. Only one cup and glass despite specifying the room for two (nothing like drinking tea out of a small glass!). Would not stay again, and the room was definitely not worth £89!
Review 7:The lady was nice at the office. Bathtub was big enough for two. Plenty of parking spaces.
Review 8:Lovely friendly family run hotel. Staff made us feel extremely welcome and looked after. The location was excellent for the town and 5 minute walk to the station for getting into London. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Review 9:The hotel is ideally located with easy access to the town centre and train station as well as the old town where one can purchase a variety of dishes from the numerous takeaways and restaurants. The lady at reception was lovely and very accommodating as I arrived later than planned. The staff at the bar were very welcoming and friendly. The hotel has private parking for guests which I found very handy. My room was spacious and well maintained over my stay.
Review 10:No-one on reception. No other guests! No restaurant or bar. More importantly, the surly, unhelpful Italian lady who attended us charged us twice and when we said we'd paid already, she still insisted on us paying again and 'said' she would check this up. No contact number seemed to be working and no email address was available.
Review 11:The close proximity to the railway station. There were tea and coffee making facilities in the room and the bed was comfortable.
Review 12:Very tired hotel, unwelcoming and staff unpleasant - didn't stop for breakfast and having booked on line was charged more than the price displayed in reception. Lot's of traffic noise to late in the night and from early morning.
Review 13:I got 5 hours sleep!
Review 14:All of it my fiancé came over and reversed his car into your trees as it was sticking out and should have been cut back. Dissapointed with all the hotel.
Review 15:Nothing
Review 16:staff practically non-existent- no lifts or offer to help take kids and buggy up two flights of stairs place seems deserted seems old and musty breakfast is a chore for them no one at reception on checkout no one answered phone!
Review 17:spacious room
Review 18:Waitef ages for proprietor to come after insructions to ring 2.no bar on. Tea tray not replenished meaning wr didn't get a tea/ coffe before leaving on our 2nd morning
Review 19:Area lovely, close to station, nice big room and comfortable bed
Review 20:I was given a room with a lock on the door which was faulty and difficult to lock. At 9.30pm I was asleep only to be awoken by a member of staff in my room for no apparent reason. He merely said sorry and left. At 10.10pm a drunken man was banging on my door and insisted that was his room. At 1.20am another drunken person was knocking at my door and demanding to get in. When I went to complain at Reception there were no staff to be found anywhere and the Reception was not manned when I left in the morning. I have since made a complaint to the hotel and they promised to call me back but I am still waiting for the call.
Review 21:The location of the hotel and that is all.
Review 22:Not sure about the shiny black mirrored bathroom floor tiles.
Review 23:I called mid-morning to advise of a late check-in - it wasn't a problem even as late as 11.45pm, the lady at reception was very friendly and helpful.
Review 24:The wifi was very poor, also the bins were not emptied on a daily basis. Although it had licenced premises to sell alcohol it was not open.
Review 25:The location was excellent and car parking was good if a little limited.
Review 26:the manager was very welcoming and the bar staff helped me to get some food after a tiresome day. The hotel is a few minutes from the train station and was easy to find.
Review 27:The receptionist/owner was not very friendly or welcoming. The service was poor on arrival and at breakfast, the bedroom needed a clean and the dining room furniture was very dated and dirty. We paid extra for a breakfast and it was disgusting. I would never recommend this venue to anyone.
Review 28:Location suited us and the bed was ok
Review 29:I would have liked a breakfats included for the price but it seems to be the standars in Stevenage.
Review 30:The room was pretty big com[ared to the other hotel for the same price range. Really comfortable queen size bed. Big bath room. And above all a really fast internet connection and a small fridge convenient to store food for lunch.
Review 31:The hotel was extremely tired looking, there was a musty smell as we walked in. The bed was lumpy with a very heavy winter duvet - in August! There were only 2 pillows on a double bed which were thin and lumpy.(We did ask for more and had 2 better ones on our second night). We found a big clump of matted hairs in the bed!! There were not enough towels in the bathroom and these were worn and threadbare, there was not a floor mat for the bathroom. The toilet roll was the cheapest I have ever experienced in the UK. The road noise was considerably loud even with the windows closed.
Review 32:We could walk to the station and they did have a limited amount of private parking which we were able to use.
Review 33:The basin looked like it hadn't been cleaned was hair still in it ! The fridge in room was full of green mould. The bar was never manned and when it was the soft drinks machine never worked nor did the till.
Review 34:The bed was comfortable !
Review 35:only saw one member of staff on the day we booked in. We had to phone for her to come to reception then wait for her to drag herself over. Shower was next to useless and sink was blocked. My pillowed smelled of food and there were long black hairs in the bed. We were right next to two roads and the sound of traffic was horrendous so sleeping was difficult. People were smoking in the building the smell along the hallway was disgusting and it came into our room. We are none smokers.
Review 36:Nothing, we left a day early because we couldn't stand another night there.
Review 37:Executive Suite - Not happy at all £140.00 Said on internet 2 +1 for room only slept 2 with a sofa. A lot of Dust on surfaces and kettle, ripped cushions, and a money bag stuffed with latex gloves in bedside cabinet, and curtains hanging off rail not enough hooks and no breakfast inc in a £140.00 a room night - that should not be classed as an executive. very disappointed
Review 38:Friendly Staff,
Review 39:The shower in room 40 is appalling, not a shower just a drip. Receptionstaff, ....... there was hardly ever staff around, could wait for agesto see someone, nobody seemed interested. No restaurant facilities inthe evening, very disappointing.
Review 40:A good full English breakfast, quickly and pleasantly delivered.
Review 41:No restaurant except for breakfast. as advertised on Booking .Com which was one of the reasons booking this hotel, listing needs to say only breakfast served, as we were having a new kitchen fitted.
Review 42:Nice size room well appointed with sofa and a small table to eat at, as it is needed if you like takeaways. If you like a relaxed stay with no fuss good place to stay.
Review 43:Poor check-in. I booked at a cost on £383 for five nights. I arrived and first and foremost I was handed a bill for £426. The room was only cleaned once during my stay. It was hoovered on Wednesday and I was checking out on Thursday.I didn't have a spoon to stir my tea. The shower was pitiful - pressureless.
Review 44:The patio door allowing aireflow.
Review 45:Felt deserted with public areas in darkness and staff had to be called by phone, although arrived promptly.
Review 46:Short walk to station and town centre and easy to find off main road. Beautiful garden and parking area.
Review 47:I felt not welcome. No staff on arrival, need to use the phone to call for receptionist. When she arrived, she was on phone and didn't great me even when I said hello twice- no reply. She then asked us from where we come from and when got the answer she shared her unnecessary, negative opinion about other people. She was also complaining about computer and card machine when doing check in. Receptionist then handled us the key and said that front doors are closed after midnight and we need to look for staff/call for someone to come and let us in. I also had to ask the lady to direct me to the room as I didn't know where is it and she wasn't going to say anything about it. She just replied 'first floor'. Overall I didn't feel welcome but more like I disturbed her.
Review 48:it is close to old beautiful town. Nice garden.
Review 49:Heating being on. No staff available on reception, only 1 member of staff who seemed to be dealing with the breakfasts, but needed to assist another customer who had problem with his bathroom door which had locked.
Review 50:The hotel was clean
Review 51:There was no receptionist and I waited several minutes and dialled the number left on the desk to no avail. Eventually the barmaid saw me and checked me in but she had to phone the receptionist on her mobile.! And when I checked out - again no one on the front desk. Very poor excuse of a hotel.
Review 52:The only thing I liked about The Gate is its location.
Review 53:Few signs of life in the place, although there were probably other guests. I resorted to taking meals, mainly breakfast, in the nearby Tesco Café, where I was well looked after.
Review 54:Quiet and comfortable.
Review 55:It's neglected all fixtures and fittings coverd in dust the woman receptionist was was strange she was not professional the serves was so poor we went out to buy toilet roll because there was no staff on sight even when you sing the phone. In the bathroom the plumbing I'd poor Wight line scale in the sink the shower has an gives no hot water I have booked three night hear and no one has come to do any cleaning in this room on the top of the mirror is a coating of dust the window by the bed opens out so far that people can acutely climb out
Review 56:The TV average vroom
Review 57:Only saw one person the whole time, at check-in. No other customers at all? They didn't know how much breakfast was. Room was cold and decor tired. Someone's leftover shower gel from Thistle left in bathroom.
Review 58:Location was good for my purposes.
Review 59:Nothing to report here
Review 60:The Manager and staff seems to take a very personal approach in providing a fast and friendly service, nothing is to much trouble Allan Biddle stayed on 20/1/2015 and will be back for more of this
Review 61:Only one member of staff seen in the whole visit. No meals available and no bar open. Just a bedroom !!
Review 62:Close to Old Town and Station for London. Nice Room, reasonably priced.
Review 63:The hotel restaurant was closed that night and unfortunately both members of staff were lacking in local knowledge regarding reputable places to eat out. They did have brochures on the reception desk advertising a local curry takeaway outfit called Poppadom Express who never even answered the phone after 3 attempts. Having Googled them I found the online reviews to be absolutely shocking, but entertaining reading nonetheless. Avoid! Having braved the freezing cold walk to the far end of Stevenage High Street [just after Tesco on the left hand side], I happened across an excellent take away curry place called Surma. Very tasty food. As for breakfast at the hotel the following morning there was no one to greet guests coming down for breakfast and very limited options.
Review 64:Staff were pleasant and helpful, and kindly offered an umbrella as it was chucking it down outside
Review 65:No one at reception you have to dial 200? No one at reception when we left. Breakfast has to be ordered the day before. In my opinion it is not a three star hotel. Bathroom has toilet roll and hand wash and that's it ?
Review 66:Not much apart from the lady that took us to the room
Review 67:Only downfall was that the Internet appeared a little slow but the speed was increased after sometime.
Review 68:Location was a plus, I visited family members and stayed in the hotel. Few walking distance to family, walking distance to the old town where you can find few pubs and restaurant as well as new town centre to buses and train station. Would definitely recommend this hotel, it suites for many occasions.
Review 69:Owner/receptionist was unfriendly, rude and very inefficient. Took 20 minutes to check in our 3 rooms. Bar closed, restaurant closed. Rooms were clean and tidy but noisy from road outside. Towels were threadbare. Bar was opened in the evening but anything we asked for was off so we reverted to asking for coffees told can have only in rooms as don't sell. Appalling and we won't be staying there again.
Review 70:Location was reasonable
Review 71:Inefficient owner was quite rude unfriendly and slow. Bar and restaurant closed. Bar didn't have anything asked for as it was off. Breakfast was ok but very greasy. Owner/receptionist was unfriendly and very inefficient. Took 20 minutes to check in our 3 rooms. Bar closed, restaurant closed. Rooms were clean and tidy but noisy from road outside. Bar opened in the evening but anything we asked for was off so we reverted to asking for coffees told can have only in rooms as don't sell. Appalling and we won't be staying there again.
Review 72:Location was ok
Review 73:Good price for money. Lovely stuff. Nice big and comfortable room well furnished. Hotel got excellent position in between new and old town and very near form rail station. Enjoyed my stay here and I like to come back soon when I am around for my next job.
Review 74:Small amount of onsite parking but no issues parking on the street. No lift to top floor.
Review 75:Room was comfortable and well decorated to a very good standard, did not visit the bar but noted that you also have a choice of a pub just a very short walk away.
Review 76:No restaurant, no one ever answered the phone. House keeping would not clean room if I was in the room, when they were ready to clean.
Review 77:Manager (owner) very friendly, and appears to be making changes, improvements
Review 78:Bar was not open ,until 7 pm. no staff at reception on arrival.only a phone . breakfast room locked at nine in the morning , towels very shabby ,very tired hotel indeed . when bar was opened in the evening no staff to be found ,give this hotel a miss
Review 79:Wish I stayed another night.
Review 80:Home from home. I stayed at the Gate Hotel for 2 nights. The hotel is 5 minute walk from Stevenage train station and a 2 minutes walk to the high street, which has a great selection of restaurants. I found the Gate Hotel very easy to find situated in a very quite street. When I arrived at the hotel. I found the reception area to be unmanned, however I saw a sign to call the 200 number. Within minutes I was greeted by the owner of the hotel, a wonderful pleasant lady called Phina. I can only describe Phina as being loving kind and very caring . Her presents made me feel welcomed as if it was her own home. My room was large, warm, clean and very cozy, my bed was very comfortable with crips clean white sheets, big couch. It felt more like home then a hotel. My room was cleaned each day with fresh towels and sheets. My stay at the hotel was great I felt very safe. I loved how well Phina took great care of me. This was a great help as being alone in London can sometimes feel a bit scary and lonely. I would definitely stay at the hotel again.
Review 81:When we arrived there was not heat. We asked to have the heat put on which they did in our rooms next day. However, there was never any heat in the dining room and it was quite cold. The coffee was never hot and it was obvious the breakfast was partially pre- cooked. We had to call on the phone to get some one at the desk even to get ice.
Review 82:It was located close to our relatives.
Review 83:On arrival the employee that greeted me was VERY rude and her attitude was an absolute disgrace. The bar wasn't open and when I asked about it I was presented with further rude attitude. The room was poor and had a musty smell. The bed cushions and bed also smelled very musty. It was not a pleasant room, not a pleasant stay and not a pleasant atmosphere - especially for £75 for one night! I will never stay here again and would advise anyone to look elsewhere.
Review 84:Nothing!
Review 85:On arrival there was an unmanned reception, with a sign on the desk to call the receptionist for check in. Shortly after calling, a woman came through to check us in. Her attitude towards us was rude. She hardly spoke or looked at us, slapped a form on the desk indicating that I needed to fill it out, gave me an old broken pen. The key was on a very large key fob, so when we went out I left it at reception because I didn't want to carry it around. The shocking thing was, when we came back later that evening, our key wasn't at reception because they'd mistakenly given it to another customer who had just checked in. Fortunately he brought the key back after walking into our room and realising it was already occupied. No apologies from the hotel staff. We certainly didn't feel welcome. I will never book this hotel again.
Review 86:Location was close to train station, which is why we chose it. The room comfortable and cleanliness was OK.
Review 87:Some furniture in the room was damaged, also traces of cigarette ash around balcony door. Disappointed to find no bar or restaurant available on Friday, quality of breakfast left a lot to be desired
Review 88:Convenient location for railway station and town centre.
Review 89:Very lacklustre check in experience No one around for breakfast. Waiting for 10min Worthless sausages No one around for check out
Review 90:Location WiFi Speed
Review 91:Reception was poor. The service at the bar was dreadful - the girl didn't know what glass to use for red wine and didn't know the price of any drinks. The breakfast was really bad - no choice of cooked food - you got a full English or not! And it was ver poor - bacon not cooked, cold tomato, tasteless sausage etc. nobody in the building that we could complain to or hand our key to.
Review 92:Bed was comfy Water was very hot Everything was very clean
Review 93:We waited for 45 mins at the reception desk for someone to appear. The room was not very clean, as a result of that we decided not to have breakfast there. The staff were also absent for our departure, (a bit Mari-Cellesteish_. I willnot be using this "hotel" again and would not recommend it to anyone I know.
Review 94:Arrived at the hotel and it was like it was their first day, two women behind the counter. They asked me to fill the arrival form in, fair enough. Asked for my payment card, fair enough. Then proceeded to put the card the wrong way in to the chip and pin machine numerous times, loudly telling me in front of other waiting guests that my card had declined. I politely told them that the chip actually had to go in the machine for it to work! After they tried again to put the card in (THE WRONG WAY AROUND AGAIN) it told them to swipe the card, which they did with the mag strip outside of the machine! (card upside down). After pointing this out to them they just talked over me saying they use this machine every day...... Finally the card number was keyed in to the machine and it worked, no apologies nothing like that. The room key was placed on the counter in front of me and they proceeded to deal with the next waiting guests. Not once was I told where my room was, not even what floor it was on. I can tell that I wasn't the first as the guests who were served before me had a chuckle with me about it going up the stairs, we wished each other good luck in finding our rooms and parted company in the first corridor. Bar was empty and unmanned, as a solo business traveller, arriving late in the evening (around 9pm) a pint would have been nice. So headed to Tesco around the corner (don't walk it, make sure you drive, its not the best area). No information given about check out times or breakfast or anything really! Very poor show.
Review 95:Free wifi, you have to ask for the code. Balcony on my room, you have to ask for the key. 24hr Tesco just around the corner.
Review 96:*The price does not reflect hotel and facilities ..it's way to expensive for something that's this cheap & cheerful!! *There's is no restaurant opened even though it's advertised! Not good after a 300m drive arriving at 8.30pm to then have to go back out again to eat but least bars / restaurants / takeaways are just round the corner! Staff were not bothered when I complained about it and said if you don't like it you can go elsewhere! *Furniture is very dated in room, wasn't that warm in there and lots of road noise from passing traffic from my room (think rooms on other side are much quiter)
Review 97:Wifi was brilliant, huge rooms & en-suite with 3 seater leather sofa, table & chairs, large TV, tea /coffee facilities (they give you plenty of supplies and are all Douwe Egberts)
Review 98:Choosing this hotel in the 1st place!! Very quick to take my money, and thereafter we had bare, if indeed any contact with any member of staff! Cold and noisy rooms, due to very old style double glazing system. Fausty smelling bar area, which was very difficult to order drinks mainly due to absolute disfunctional staff member, who failed in their abilty to communicate and any civil manner. We have, for both leisure and pleasure, stayed Nationally and Internationally, in many, many hotels, and I can quite honestly say, myself and my family would certainly rate this particular " hotel " in the worst 5 we have ever had the misfortune to stay in!!
Review 99:Checking out!! Not much to say to be honest, I find myself using the obligatory 200 characters to waffle, as I have no good words to offer in the positive part of the review!
Review 100:Nice place to stay. I was there for a night and it was fantastic.big and comfortable room with all needed furnitures. Morning breakfast was hot and delicious. I enjoyed my stay there.
Review 101:The reception desk has no one there, you have to sit and wait for the staff, when the staff finally get there they are very unwelcoming and rude. I would not stay at this hotel again purely because of the staff.
Review 102:Value for money, clean and tidy.
Review 103:Very nice big room with comfortable bed . I enjoy my staying at the gate hotel. I definately go back there if I go Stevenage again. Good place within the price.
Review 104:No customer service . Facilities basic at best . Tea and coffee had not been replenished . Not enough towels . No key for access to balcony . A poor effort
Review 105:Only it's location .
Review 106:Although stated on summary the Gate hotel doesn't provide an evening meal which was extremely annoying when you arrive tired and you are a female lone traveller. They did however permit takeaways but this is not my preferred choice of food. The breakfast room was deserted for at least 10 minutes so when someone finally arrived I had to rush.
Review 107:The shower didn't work. The corridors smelt of smoking. The corridors were full of old mattresses and old furniture. The sheet was torn. The hotel is dilapidated. This is not even a 2 star hotel. I would not stay here again even if it was free.
Review 108:Nobody on reception at arrival or departure. Over priced and didn't think it was value for money. My friend stayed at the Novotel which was cheaper
Review 109:Comfortable room.
Review 110:Difficult to check in seemed to take a long time which after a very long day is not what is needed .Restaurant i was told was not open. Shower had very low pressure and i ended up removing the head to use just use the hose. no one on reception to complain to when checking out
Review 111:Room comfortable
Review 112:whole room was dusty (including the bedding) and had a stale/musty smell to it (opened the window for a few hours and that was sorted though)
Review 113:Very friendly owner, very close to transport links for weekend concert we were attending nearby.
Review 114:I didn't like the breakfast price or the lack of personal attention. Further, just leaving the room keys on the unmanned reception desk in the morning is unacceptable.
Review 115:I liked the location and the room/facilities.
Review 116:Very nice clean hotel with large and very comfortable bed. I enjoyed my stay here . I will definitely go back
Review 117:Had to wait for reception staff to arrive. Would not refund for unused days.
Review 118:Good size room
Review 119:Easy access to public transport and close proximity to restaurants/pubs
Review 120:Lovely room to stay in . Big comfortable bed. Very clean around. Available parking
Review 121:The hotel staff was nice, its a quiet and peaceful hotel. Comfortable bed, nice shower & toilet facilities.
Review 122:The hotel is very tiered and in need of some updating. My room was the same, in need of updating and a real good clean.
Review 123:Room very tired, shower very very poor, poor toiletries, no food at night.
Review 124:Bed was ok
Review 125:clenners
Review 126:Location & facilities.
Review 127:Room was horrible, Wifi!!
Review 128:Worst Hotel I ever stay in. Will never be back.
Review 129:The welcome was like i was imposing, no food available and not mentioned when booking, will definitely not recommend to other people
