Reviews for The Charlton Arms
Review 1:A crying baby kept us awake during the night and was also present while we had breakfast. The service at breakfast was poor, for example our order wasn't taken for several minutes, there was no butter until we requested it, the toaster burnt our toast but no applicability was offered, only semi- skimmed milk was provided, no one asked if we were happy with our meal.
Review 2:The bedroom was comfortable. The bar was attractive and the barman pleasant and efficient. The English breakfast was tasty.
Review 3:Wonderful location to Ludlow town. Our room was upgraded at no extra cost.I would have no hesitation recommending this Hotel.Looking to return in the spring.
Review 4:Would have appreciated somewhere comfortable to sit and chat after dinner , other than more dining chairs in the bar Very slow breakfast service - we wanted to get off early but it took ages to get cooked food and we were the first in the dining room at the start of "service".
Review 5:lovely location and good food
Review 6:No bad experiences but room for some improvement at breakfast .Excellent English breakfast but why not put out some fruit and fruit juices for residents to help themselves. It just seemed a little bit penny -pinching .
Review 7:The dinner was excellent and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Very comfortable place to stay.
Review 8:The location of the property was lovely, we stayed in Tempest and left the window open, enabling us to wake up to the sound of the river flowing by. The staff were very helpful and welcoming. The cheeseboard ordered in the bar rounded off an excellent stay. Thank you Charlton Arms.
Review 9:The room was nicely furnished but the mattress on the bed was terribly uncomfortable and looked extremely old. After attempts with a blanket to improve its comfort we decided that after such a bad nights sleep we would not stay for our 2nd night.
Review 10:on arrival we had dinner in the restaurant. The food was good and the staff very friendly.
Review 11:Nothing to dislike, even the weather was favourable, nothing quite the same as warm rain. ?
Review 12:Had a very relaxed first visit to the Charlton, excellent location. Restaurant dinner on the Friday night was lovely so we then booked for the Saturday evening, which also saved us going out in the rain, quality of service and food again very pleasant. Will certainly be back in the near future, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Excellent.
Review 13:Although the room was small it was well equipped, clean and comfortable ideal for a short stay close to the centre of Ludlow. The pub ambiance was welcoming and relaxed and breakfast was first class.
Review 14:Liked everything
Review 15:The room we stayed in was superb. Great size, very clean and outside space with hot tub........awesome !! Staff with personality and wit. Beautiful breakfast with stunning view x
Review 16:There was no lounge area for residents where you could sit either during the day or before dinner . We found the bed very low almost like a futon bed !! It may appear modern but not very comfortable . Could be this bed was only in our room (5) Aerial .
Review 17:Location was convenient for the town. Resturant menu good .
Review 18:The hotel is somewhat expensive. The car park was wet and muddy.
Review 19:The hotel is in a great location. The room is impressive with it's own roof garden and hot tub! The staff were both friendly and helpful.
Review 20:Some parts of the dining room were not very clean.
Review 21:The staff were very efficient and friendly. The food and ambience were great and the location perfect.
Review 22:The BIG problem was the car park. Not only was it full early afternoon, but very narrow and not obviously full until one drove down to the end and had to reverse down with other vehicles driving in. For this reason I would neither stay nor recommend this hotel to those with cars. The hotel should have a reversing area at the bottom of the car park, and have reserved places for those staying at the hotel.
Review 23:Nice clean room with excellent views. Restaurant staff were first class. Dinner and breakfast top quality.
Review 24:This is not a **** hotel. It's a pleasant place but no telephone in the bedroom, an uncomfortable bed, no night porter, together with scruffy, stained hall and stair carpets makes it more a ** inn. I think the AA star rating must have been awarded a long time ago and needs revisiting.
Review 25:Every member of staff, without exception, was delightful, efficient, hard working and caring. They could not have done more for us.
Review 26:All very good.
Review 27:Excellent breakfast (proper scrambled eggs -- not the sliceable variety) overlooking a beautiful view of the river with entertainment from a heron, a kingfisher and a grebe.
Review 28:Wifi signal not very strong.Loud at night when trying to sleep but it's a pub and to be expected.
Review 29:Location great. Lovely view from the room we stayed in and the dining room.
Review 30:Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, they were all so lovely. will definitely be coming back, told all our family about it. Food very good, best steak my husband has had in years. I had the whole plaice which was absolutely gorgeous.
Review 31:Ended up in one of the last rooms right up in the attic. Pretty pokey with VERY low beams. Hit my head on one and almost knocked myself out, enough so I was knocked off my feet.
Review 32:Great location, right on the river and a short walk to the castle and the main shopping area. Food was pretty good too, particularly the breakfast.
Review 33:may I suggest that the road side rooms are fitted with secondary glazing to reduce traffic noise.
Review 34:Location, view excellent. Dining experience very good - table service good, food delicious and room position good. staff all polite and helpful.
Review 35:Room very hot. Slept with all the windows open. Wifi intermittent. Dinner ambience needs working on-may be music and a candle? Otherwise very good indeed. These are only very minor things and did not detract from visit.
Review 36:Wonderful location in a lovely town. Quiet room with good facilities for price. Terrace was an added bonus. Breakfast and dinner excellent. Staff professional. Would recommend.
Review 37:staff on arrival unhelpful. For the cost would have expected extra touches. Quite shabby in places and could do with some TLC.
Review 38:Good location and staff at breakfast were helpful.
Review 39:No towel rail in ensuite. A bit more variety of food at breakfast for those who want a continental breakfast would be nice, but the cooked breakfast was very good .
Review 40:Lovely bedroom, clean and nicely decorated. Large ensuite with huge bath and a seperate shower. View of the river. Excellent food. Very pleasant staff.
Review 41:Nothing at all !!!!!!
Review 42:Everyone we met when we arrived was friendly and helpful asked if we needed help with our bags to our room. Our room was lovely so pleased with it and the view from our balcony lovely. Breakfast was all lovely enjoyed every mouthful.
Review 43:Beds a bit too form and lumpy and no mirror in room made getting ready slow with everyone waiting for bathroom.
Review 44:Warm welcome, great food, help storing bikes. Great spot overlooking river.
Review 45:the bathroom was not as clean as it could be on our arrival, the receptionist cleaned it for us. The bed was very hard very uncomfortable we did not sleep well !
Review 46:the staff where very accommodating, the food was good.
Review 47:The bed was extremely low however it was comfortable to sleep on.
Review 48:The site of this hotel is excellent with beautiful views of the river. It was really nice to eat your meals overlooking the river and weather permitting you can enjoy drinks on the roof terrace.
Review 49:Intermittent wi if but not rectifiable by the management as a town issue.
Review 50:Great riverside location with easy walking access into Ludlow. Attractive woodland walks next to hotel. Buzzy atmosphere and friendly landlord/landlady.
Review 51:The only slight issue for the business traveller was the intermittent wi-fi
Review 52:The location , staff, decor and overall quality made the stay most enjoyable
Review 53:Very noisy children from a wedding party running unsupervised around the bedroom corridors. A friend in another room wanted to sleep at 9.30, but it was impossible.
Review 54:Location
Review 55:Our room was very hot even though there didn't appear to be any heating on. When we checked out we waited ten minutes for someone to come and see to us also the lady seemed distracted and didn't even ask if we had enjoyed our stay.
Review 56:The location was excellent and the room was very clean.
Review 57:Nothing
Review 58:Friendly helpful staff. I lost my wallet, and the receptionist thought nothing of phoning other establishment I had been at to try to locate it. Excellent
Review 59:At checkout the receptionist at the Charlton Arms Hotel said that payment had been made by my credit card for the two nights and that there were no extras to pay either. My wife and I hanged around for another 30 minutes as we continuously phoned for a taxi to the train station but there was no answer. In the end an employee kindly offered to give us a lift to the station. After half an hour of waiting on the platform at the train station we were suddenly confronted by a man holding a crash helmet. He said he was the owner of the hotel and demanded that we go back to the hotel with him saying that the credit card had been declined. When I said that we weren’t following him as I didn’t even know who he was he immediately called the police. He never offered any ID to say who he was nor showed any proof that my credit card had been declined. What followed were threats and insults for 15 minutes. He said there was no way he would let me get on the train if I didn’t pay him. On the platform using the ticket office clerk’s mobile he angrily told the police that we didn’t give a toss, the credit card was probably false and that things would get ugly if I tried to leave on the train without paying. The police didn’t come and in the end the ticket office clerk told me that he was indeed the owner of the hotel which turned out to be true. To avoid any more trouble I paid him in cash. He snatched an extra 10 pounds claiming petrol expenses for his motorbike trip which I eventually got back and just as he left he said that he regretted not having punched me from the beginning. Is this how an owner and manager of a prestigious hotel in Shropshire treats his customers? Obviously the concept of customer relations is quite alien to this individual.
Review 60:The hotel was in an attractive setting by the river and although not central not too far from the centre of town
Review 61:No phone in the room. Wifi difficult to get and unreliable. Very thick duvet, much too hot for summer temperatures
Review 62:Very comfortable room, nice location, good breakfast
Review 63:Be aware that the roadside rooms do get some noise from the traffic crossing the bridge. Not a problem during the night but I am a good sleeper !
Review 64:Location. Great old bar with locals and good real ale.
Review 65:Outside area wasn't lit up for evening drinks. Evening dinner menu wasn't inviting.
Review 66:Beautiful room. Pleasant staff. Fantastic location and outlook.
Review 67:the food service was a little slow which was unfortunate as the quality was very good
Review 68:the location was perfect and parking very easy so that we had no difficulties doing day trips and finding places to visit. It was perfect as a centre for the area
Review 69:Very difficult to highlight anything not to like. We couldn't open the sachets of vinegar, but in the grand scheme of things this is hardly important.
Review 70:Sitting on the terrace in the sun with good wine and delicious food. Breakfast was especially well presented with an excellent choice. The quality of the décor and furnishings was very tasteful and modern.
Review 71:Poor wifi and no 3G. Not their fault- there were wifi extenders everywhere, just not doing the trick.
Review 72:Very friendly staff. Great food- very good menu. Lovely location- we had a room with a balcony. Fantastic room- really lovely.
Review 73:We were there in a heatwave but the loft room my family was in was STIFFLING. Found the staff to be fairly cold and unhelpful. Wifi was very patchy
Review 74:Location to Ludlow town is great and the position above the river beautiful. Plenty of parking
Review 75:Purely personal, but would have liked a bath
Review 76:Gorgeous views of the river. Seating areas excellent. Food excellent and staff professional and friendly. Bedroom although small double was well decorated and clean. Lovely hotel!!
Review 77:surprised by how much extra we paid for our room using booking.com - something like £25 per night
Review 78:easy parking, good welcome, very helpful staff, good food, very reasonable wine, excellent position by river
Review 79:Great location and full of character . Ideal for walking , sight seeing and shopping , dining elsewhere too if wanted all walking distance from door .
Review 80:Woken very early Monday morning by binmen Not fault of hotel I know, maybe they can have a word with refuse dept.
Review 81:Peace and quiet(mostly!!) Room was in excellent position away from road and with good view of town and river.
Review 82:The room was too hot as it was a lovely and warm summer night but there was no air com or a fun . We opened the window but didn't help. Also it was very noise in the room with the window opened because of the traffic outside . Everything else was super!
Review 83:The place is perfect for a weekend break. My boyfriend d and I had a great time , including the meals and stay in the Ariel room. The food was delicious too. The location you can't get it better . I will definitely go back and recommend to friends .
Review 84:The location was perfect by the river and for strolling into Ludlow . I thought the idea of a walk printed on the breakfast menu was brilliant. My husband and I did the walk - great!
Review 85:The number of stairs to get to the room.
Review 86:Very friendly staff, great location with views over the river, comfortable good sized room, good breakfast included. Loverly town centre 10 minutes walk away.
Review 87:Low, soft bed (not good for the mature customer). Excessive heat on restaurant in full sun & no air con to alleviate this. Eton Mess was horrid ( more like a mousse).
Review 88:Location; friendly staff. We stopped many years ago & we were highly impressed with the structural improvements since!
Review 89:Staff service was functional rather than welcoming and the breakfast was adequate, not exceptional. For the full English black pudding was served rather than baked beans (which were on the menu), but no explanation offered. explanation.
Review 90:Location and the general standard of the rooms (though could be very hot in such conditions)
Review 91:After signing for the prise on arriving (This is the first time I had to do something, so I was somewhat amazed), we found a leaflet of the hotel itself with prizes of the room from 90-120 pound and we had to pay 167 pound. The explanation was that booking.com asked 20% as middleman. But even when it was true it the there is still a difference if 23 pound we had to pay more.
Review 92:Our room, The Balthazar Room, was not fit for purpose. It had low thick wooden beams in the bedroom and bathroom at neck/head height. No shaving plug socket, and a shower that was very complicated to operate with no instructions. We are of average height and spent most of the time in a stooped position. On request we were unable to change rooms as the hotel was full and all other guests had checked in before our arrival. We had requested a room with a river view but were not allocated one.
Review 93:Staff were very friendly and helpful. Very nice breakfast most pleasantly served.
Review 94:No air conditioning and the noise outside with drunken people from the attached pub was terrible, they carried on screaming and shouting to about 3am. We had to have the windows open because it was so hot and stuffy
Review 95:The hotel, the area and the staff are lovely. The room was nicely decorated
Review 96:No storage in the room for your clothes, stayed for three nights so good job it was a bay window so used the windowsill for clothes a bar to hang clothes was the extent of storage
Review 97:Location ,views and the service
Review 98:Leaving!!
Review 99:I stayed here a couple years ago and its was like Fawlty Tower, its now under new owner for the last 15 months and its a superb stay, Food service and location are stunning.its now clean and free of clutter.
Review 100:Being tall found the beams in the bedroom a bit troublesome and the low ceiling in the bathroom was awkward.
Review 101:The comfort and location not forgetting the breakfast. Must stay longer next time.
Review 102:leaving
Review 103:Bedroom Stunning, View Stunning, stayed in Tempest, deco stunning. Food stunning, Service Top class for a pub. And what I come for to ludlow Beer STUNNING :)))
Review 104:No lift so had to carry cases up stairs
Review 105:Very convenient for arriving by car and for walking round Ludlow. Parking on site. Excellent restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Lovely setting by the river.
Review 106:The room was too hot even with the window open and being situated next to the traffic lights the noise was a disruption. It would be great if the room had a hair dryer.
Review 107:The breakfast, staff and location
Review 108:Would have preferred a shower, but nevertheless the bath was large and the bathroom was very nice.
Review 109:Well appointed room, with lovely views over the river. Evening meal and breakfast were very good.
Review 110:No shaving point. No wardrobe. No mirror over dressing table. No hairdryer -used own but had to stretch lead fro kettle plug across to full length mirror behind door to dry hair. Bed very low. Bedside tables minute. Needed blind or net at window for privacy without darkness.
Review 111:Dinner was good and facilities clean.Lovely view of the river and town.
Review 112:the breakfast was awful, the service slow, the room had a view over a terrace area of another room with a dirty ashtray and mugs which had obviously been there a long time. I would not recommend this hotel.
Review 113:the location was good
Review 114:The mattress was terrible it needed to be replaced. The outlook from our room wasn't good we would have preferred a river view. Low beams and no mirror by plug was a problem.
Review 115:The views over the river while eating breakfast was lovely. The room was very clean. Even though it was on a road the traffic noise wasn't that bad.
Review 116:Facilities, location, rooms, staff, breakfast and dinner, view just all perfect and we have been a few places in England, Scotland Wales during our 5 week Great Britain journey.
Review 117:Beautifully appointed room, clean and comfortable. Good food in restaurant, both for evening meal and breakfast. Lovely location, and surprisingly quiet.
Review 118:The only downside was the WiFi which was terrible and didn't work most of the time unless standing next to the check in counter.
Review 119:Loved the location and our family room. Short walk in to town and castle. Breakfast was magnificent.
Review 120:Nothing.
Review 121:We loved the view over the river from or room and also from the restaurant. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent and the staff efficient and friendly.
Review 122:From the start it was a wonderful experience. You would have to be a fool to find anything to complain about. The room, staff, service and food were 5* quality and couldn't do enough for you. It was the best birthday treat I have ever had.
Review 123:Room was well decorated and furnished, very comfortable bed, great views from our room. Staff wrre all friendly and helpful. Will definately book again
Review 124:no negatives
Review 125:lovely hotel with stunning views .Six of us stayed overnight after day at the races ,they let us leave our luggage even though we were too early to check in.We all had lovely rooms and a very pleasant evening in the bar a good nights sleep was had by all and a wonderful breakfast. Will stay again and make it a longer stay next time loved it.ci
Review 126:Not really a bad experience but there was none available on Reception to check us out! We were going for a walk so left the key and a note to say that we would return to check out.
Review 127:The spa bath and spacious bedroom and excellent food.
Review 128:Not really a complaint but could do with a long mirror and some coat hooks in our room.
Review 129:Staff were friendly.Room was comfortable with some privacy for our 16 year old daughter. A great vase for looking around the area
Review 130:Excellent location with views over the River Teme and up to the historic town and castle. Just a short walk across the bridge. A very friendly and accommodating staff.
Review 131:No wardrobe just a hanging rail, we left our clothes in the suite case. Evening dining is fine dining only no option for just a bar meal so went out to dine on our second night, would have preferred to have stayed at the hotel
Review 132:Friendly staff. Plenty of car parking. Nice little pub bar area. Good views out of hotel windows and external balconies. Comfortable room, nice and warm.
Review 133:Wifi bit slow other a really quality stay!
Review 134:Hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating. Room was perfect for a young family - very snug and cozy. Great location in the heart of historic Ludlow, perfect for a wonder around town and down the river!
Review 135:Ideally would have liked a few more vegetarian options on the menu
Review 136:Great hotel, lovely location, staff were all very friendly and helpful. Kids loved the top-floor bedroom beams creating 'separate' sleeping areas.
Review 137:There was nothing we didnt like , as the cost was low I wasnt expe ting much, very pleasantly surprised.
Review 138:The room was great, charming and clean.the breakfast was lovely too.staff helpful.will definately return, sure it would be even better in the summer
