Reviews for The Feathers Hotel Ludlow

Review 1:All the people we spoke to had a voucher or a deal for the room and a 2 couse meal in the resturant that cost only £5 more than we paid a night for the room, we would have had to pay £64.00 for the 2 of us for 2 courses to eat in the resturant .

Review 2:best locaton centre of Ludlow public areas of hotel full of characture and history, room big and lovely All staff friendly and helpfull

Review 3:Finding our room was fraught with stress because the signing was not at all clear as to where 151 was, and a member of staff who I asked for help, just disappeared ! Our first night we were disturbed several times, we had had a tiring long journey and were very tired, however the creaky boards plus the use of their toilet the first night were unbearable from the room above, plus Reg had an odd experience from a person who stood by the side of his bed, he also spoke to him and the guy answered. We were first told the person on night duty used that bedroom above us, the following day we were told a lady in a wheel chair was using it. The heating in the large radiator was not working and the cold water tap, developed an air lock which sent gusts of water over me. We were attending a funeral so wanted a quiet, calm venue. Car parking was a little difficult but just manageable.

Review 4:The staff in the dining area were great, took time to listen to our needs, the young man was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable

Review 5:Rooms need an update. Old carpet, drapes and bed linens. Beds and pillows also need to be replaced. Very uncomfortable.

Review 6:Old hotel with lots of character. Beautiful old fireplaces and wood details throughout. Perfect central location and dog friendly.

Review 7:Would like a jug of water to be available at breakfast with the other jugs of juice, made me feel I was asking for something difficult each time.

Review 8:Very hospitable, food excellent and fantastic location.

Review 9:The inadequate car park The noisy pub across the road Room decor was a little tired Bath anti-slip mat grubby and in need of replacement Beds could do with some luxurious new covers. Current ones look a bit plain and dingy.

Review 10:Everything else was excellent and we would stay there again.

Review 11:Tired room, shower was more of a trickle, bad water supply should be addressed, bed very uncomfortable. Not worth the money.

Review 12:friendly staff good food and breakfast, restaurant full but the bar food was excellent.

Review 13:We were very impressed with the attitude of the staff who were extremely pleasant, polite helpful and efficient. The food was of good quality. Convenient locality.

Review 14:It's not that we didn't like it, but remember it's old and therefore a bit creaky - but quirky is better than bland!

Review 15:Intimate atmosphere, excellent food, very nice and helpful staff everywhere. Lovely lounge for guests only with open fire, possibility of separate dining room for small parties as well as their wedding-size one.

Review 16:Nothing in particular.

Review 17:Beautiful historic hotel in the town centre. Very good food and helpful staff. Nice market and several interesting shops including a superb local butcher.

Review 18:Reception staff not very friendly or helpful. Dining room staff quite the opposite, friendly and efficient.

Review 19:The building is spectacular, and the location excellent.

Review 20:position was excellent, food good ,rooms were excellent ,especially the upgrade to 151,overall had a wonderful break, we were celebrating my parents 60th wedding anniversary ,and had a very special break

Review 21:We specifically requested a "quiet" room but were given one right over the noisy kitchen extractor, which began at 6.30am and did not end until about 9pm. There was no alternative, due to a package tour. We had booked a table in advance for dinner the night we arrived (after a six & half hour journey), but were told on arrival at the restaurant that there was no table available, and no a la carte menu, as they were full with a package tour. On arrival, the tel. in the room did not work, nor did the shower, but these were then fixed. We were not told newspapers would be charged for, and it was a shock to receive a large bill at the end. We thought a hotel of this standing would automatically supply free papers, if not ,it should be pointed out at the start - particularly annoying as we had already paid for papers to be delivered to our home. The final bill for the room was also incorrect (we had been given a discount for the noise and we checked the amount payable the night before to in order to avoid any dispute. When we got the final bill, the sum was higher. However this was rectified, and Manager and staff were v. helpful.

Review 22:The location is perfect, and we appreciated carpets everywhere instead of cold bare boards. The staff were v. efficient and nice, and the hotel manager v. accommodating when things were wrong.

Review 23:Room in wing along corridor with many short flights of steps, difficult to negotiate with luggage but willing help was at hand.

Review 24:Excellent location in town centre, surprisingly quiet.

Review 25:This is in a great location right in the centre of Ludlow with free on site parking. The room was clean, a generous size and well appointed. We ate dinner here which lived up to its AA rosette rating. Breakfast was also good.

Review 26:Traditional, comfortable style, but could do with a little updating of shower etc.

Review 27:Great staff! Charming Hotel. Good value for money for a central location when visiting the Festival. Good breakfast.

Review 28:Very noisey guests in room above and extractor fan until early hours of morning! Hotel in need of some serious updating to justify prices charged. Bathroom shabby with mould in shower! .Restaurant overpriced for quality of food on offer.

Review 29:Location, Great staff. Comfortable bed.

Review 30:Car park full and given directions to park further away where there was parking tariff. Extremely uncomfortable beds. Single beds payed 247 for two nights where we didn't sleep well. Room was hot, window didn't open.

Review 31:Loved the building. Food was good. Friendly staff. Good location

Review 32:we had waited some 34 years to stay here and it was our 34 anniversary, it left us a little disappointed not as we anticipated at all, once inside it could have been any hotel anywhere. Room was small, TV was tucked on side wall next to window and was very small screen not easily viewed, I had to go to reception and ask if anyone was serving in bar after waiting for ten minutes, all in all not value for money and left feeling disappointed, will not be returning.

Review 33:Food was excellent, however the starter was not value for money.

Review 34:Very noisy extractor fan outside the window, which started up at 6am or earlier. No bathrobes, which you would expect in a room costing £145 per night. Dated decor and bathroom. Old-looking carpets. Cheap orange juice at breakfast. No bottled water in bedroom

Review 35:Very friendly and helpful staff

Review 36:There was nothing not to like.

Review 37:The building and location would be difficult to beat. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Food was good and the bed was comfortable.

Review 38:Considering we had paid for a superior room, the noise level from the road kept us awake. There was secondary double glazing which was ineffective. The room had an adjoining door which was not soundproof which meant that all the noise from the neighbouring room could be heard including the TV at 6 am.

Review 39:Very helpful staff

Review 40:Only being there to sleep - an overnight stay for a nearby wedding. Would have liked to have got more value for money by checking in earlier but was unable to - this was not the fault of the Feathers

Review 41:Location and oldie world nature of the hotel. Would have liked to have looked around the corridors and lounges more as they looked fascinating

Review 42:Bathroom was in need of updating and painting. Crack round the plug hole in the sink.

Review 43:Bed very comfortable. Towelling robe and slippers was a nice touch. Iron and board delivered to the room very quickly.

Review 44:Room 107 is charged as a superior twin room. There is black mould around the bath and shower screen. The flat screen Sony TV is small. 20in and sounds very tinny. The secondary double glazing is very difficult to slide so as to open the window. Having different types of light bulbs in the wall lights in the restaurant did not look as if any care was being taken about the cosmetic look of the place.

Review 45:The breakfast was excellent, as were the staff on duty.

Review 46:The free wi-fi didn't reach our bedroom.

Review 47:The staff were amazing and so lovely and accommodating with our two dogs (English Springer Spaniel Mum and her young Pup!). The hotel provided a wonderful, comfortable 'home from home' feeling and our room was lovely. The breakfast was superb with a wide choice and fantastic ingredients and the overall location couldn't be faulted.

Review 48:Gents' toilets downstairs could do with a bit of an update.

Review 49:The Feathers represented a little bit of 'Old England'. The service was quick and courteous without being over-fussy, the room well-appointed and the food of a high quality. Some people may find the front rooms slightly noisy in the morning.

Review 50:Bedrooms getting a bit tired and it is expensive if you can't eat in the restaurant because it is full. The bar meal was fine but is was not the same.

Review 51:Old façade and interior public rooms. Breakfast excellent and bar meal very good. When we had a slight problem we were changed rooms immediately, receptionist wonderful.

Review 52:My double room was cramped, gloomy, at the very end of endless steps and corridors, and the bedroom paintwork/furniture was very tired and dated - with shabby green carpets and "institutional" light fittings. Wifi reception in the bedroom was extremely poor. The bathroom sink had hairline cracks and the light cord was brown with dirt. The whole hotel looks like it hasn't been updated since 1990 and needs re-decorating internally. It is fairly expensive, and I expected a much higher standard. Which is such a shame, because the building itself is full of character!

Review 53:The first floor reading/coffee room and the writing room are attractive. The hotel is well located and undoubtedly "historic". The facade is attractive, but there is no need to stay at the hotel to see it! There was free parking, and staff were pretty friendly.

Review 54:It is time to invest in some new beds - mattresses in our twin room were sagging! The shower had a bit missing and didn't seem to be working properly. We managed for one night's stay.

Review 55:Staff are excellent from reception to bar to restaurant - friendly, welcoming and efficient.

Review 56:Nothing to do with the hotel but there are a severe lack of local taxis available. Staff were very helpful in trying to find something for us. If required, book way ahead.

Review 57:Such attentive staff, lovely room with a comfortable bed and huge bath! Restaurant was excellent both morning and night. A great location in central Ludlow. Excellent stay, left feeling very welcome and relaxed. Highly recommended!

Review 58:One word of caution - be aware that, if you are a light sleeper, there is a quite noisy extractor fan attached to the kitchen. If you have a room overlooking the car park, you may have your sleep disturbed.

Review 59:The location and facilities at this hotel are excellent. It was clean and comfortable with parking in close proximity to the town centre. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 60:The only minor complaint was the shower over the bath, found it tricky to get to work properly ant the water pressure wasn't very foreceful, but even this wouldn't put us off going back.

Review 61:We loved the fact that the hotel remained quirky and wasn't just another clone of the type of hotel geared to the corporate/conference market. The food was great, the staff were friendly and helpful and our room was spacious and comfortable. Nice to stay somewhere with a bit of history, would definitely return.

Review 62:Noise from the kitchen ventilation in the rear rooms.

Review 63:Incredible staff who even gave us a lift when no taxis were available. Excellent food. Nice bar with good atmosphere.

Review 64:stuffy room, but opening windows let in traffic noise. Winter duvets inappropriate for June. We were offere3d an "upgrade" despite our booking being the "last available room" and this is wjat we got for £133

Review 65:External appearance

Review 66:We stayed here on our honeymoon 30 years ago so arrived with high hopes but: Room dated and looking out onto a wall. No view . Poor plumbing. Shower stops and starts.. Time warp decor circa 1984 . Sticky walls thoughout the older part of the hotel. Noisy drunks outside till 2am ( not the hotels fault) . The hotel was full so we couldn't change room. There was a reduction in our bill at the end which was welcomed. The room service was excellent . Afraid we will look elsewhere in Ludlow next time

Review 67:The frontage

Review 68:Delay in gettiing evening meal due to kitchen being fully occupied by a very large party. They could have warned us at check in!

Review 69:Room was fantastic. Spacious with good facilities

Review 70:Not suitable for older people with replacement joints. Walked up and down stairs to get to our room. Unable to change to a better room.

Review 71:Excellent situation

Review 72:Not really the hotel's fault but our room faced another pub/hotel which had a live band playing loudly till quite late.

Review 73:We had an excellent meal in the restaurant to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. We were given a very spacious room with two bathrooms.

Review 74:Bathroom could really do with updating. Room at the front of the hotel was very noisy until well after midnight (from the pub across the road).

Review 75:Location was excellent. Quirky hotel. Good breakfast

Review 76:The bathroom could be more up to date but it was clean and although small contained all we needed. I was pleased the windows opened as the night we stayed was hot and muggy.

Review 77:The lovely building is easy to find and has a nice elegant atmosphere the staff are helpful and friendly. It's not glossy and modern but it was relaxing and most enjoyable. The food was excellent and the service.

Review 78:Evening meals in dining room expensive. The alternative bar choice was poor and again expensive for what was on offer and its quality. Bar meals notice in reception stated 6pm - 9. Went to order at 6.40pm and informed orders were not taken between 6.30 and 7.15pm.

Review 79:Location of hotel and its history.

Review 80:We had a front room and were woken several times in the night by revellers falling out of the pub opposite and just loud drunks passing by. This was a Sunday night.

Review 81:Restaurant staff were smart and polite and breakfast was fine.

Review 82:That I left my jacket in the wardrobe ! Again Karen and Erin are very helpful they are mailing it to me Royal Mail Special Delivery.

Review 83:The Staff; The amazing interior(looked for the ghost ) The fact it is not part of a big chain Dinner and wine really enjoyable, bar too....

Review 84:Room 133 looks over the kitchen roof which has two fans in it, the bedroom was very warm and it was not possible to leave it open because of the noise from the fans. We thought they would switch off over night, not so, they continued all night. So not the best nights sleep. This spoiled a pleasant meal and evening.a

Review 85:The location is great, parking a little tight. Staff and service excellent. Food very wall cooked and presented.

Review 86:We had to cut our stay, because our room was at the front of the hotel. The night revelers in the street outside kept us awake from 11:00pm until 2;:00 am

Review 87:staff, food and ambience

Review 88:Very helpful attentive staff, A clean well equipped comfortable room, and a very good breakfast, In fact a very pleasant experience from start to finish

Review 89:Terribly slow service in the bar; no room in the restaurant for dinner (because of a coach party!); original bedroom small and pokey (but happy to move us); no comfortable seating in public areas.

Review 90:Old world feel of the hotel; surprisingly comfortable double bed; well-equipped bathroom; excellent cooked breakfast; secure overnight parking; friendly & helpful receptionist.

Review 91:None

Review 92:Never stayed anywhere quite like this place . Its got a life of its own . When you see it for the first time , you can't believe what you are about to go into . Just to think you are staying in a building 400 years old . Ludlow s awesome also ,

Review 93:Air conditioning fans noisy outside bedroom window. No fresh tea bags in room on first day, only herbal. Only two tea bags on second day. Lack of background music, sombre atmosphere.

Review 94:Service excellent staff Good menu Central position

Review 95:The hotel could do with a bit of an update to the room decor.

Review 96:The hotel was comfortable if just a bit tired but clean and friendly. The location was excellent and the staff couldn't do more to make you feel welcome.

Review 97:Wifi signal not always good

Review 98:Location, nice staff who made you feel welcome, overall very comfortable and clean, good food and a fabulous historic building

Review 99:Feel I paid over the odds for a substandard room. Premium twin room it wasn't. .. dated decor, appalling shower pressure, half drank bottle of water on sideboard. .. far from the luxurious 2 dbl beds in the old portion of the hotel, as shown on booking!

Review 100:Beautiful exterior/some interesting rooms. Nice breakfast

Review 101:Radiators full on, room warmer than some saunas .couldn't openwindows apart from one inch, no air circulation. It took 3 fans to getit manageable and £400 to boot.

Review 102:Location and history

Review 103:Beautiful old building with all the modern comforts and a lovely breakfast. Bath robes and slippers were a nice touch. Excellent central location and parking on site.

Review 104:Pub just opposite, with very loud group of young people on a Friday night, clearly audible despite the double windows (not the hotel's fault!). Not much pressure in shower, tiny TV for such a huge room, parking was full (but easy to park in the street).

Review 105:Comfortable and very large room, creaky stairs under thick carpets, cozy wood-panelled lounges with fireplaces (lit) in beautiful house, 2 mins from the center, excellent breakfast, good restaurant (albeit a bit pretentious), very good wifi connection.

Review 106:Early in the morning the radio alarm in the bedroom went off, and continued to do so at intervals until I managed to find where it was plugged in. I felt the Receptionist could have been more receptive to my complaint when I spoke to her.

Review 107:nothing

Review 108:EVERYTHING...beautiful hotel in beautiful town of Ludlow;car parking free, wonderful clean room, large fantastic breakfast with all staff very helpful and efficient.First Class

Review 109:nothing what so ever of concern, the hotel was super.

Review 110:what a great historic hotel, was given a room next to a noisy guest, the super lady at reception moved me and did everything she could to make my stay perfect.

Review 111:Apart from impressive historical parts of hotel it appeared rather shabby with narrow claustrophobic corridors. Robes and towels were rather thin and hard. Blankets on beds were rather old, worn and torn. Some of the breakfast fruits were tinned.

Review 112:Location in town centre Staff very friendly Plenty of hot water Ease of parking

Review 113:There was space aplenty for there to be a larger bed than the standard double

Review 114:High standard of decoration in the room and a luxurious bathroom. Dinner was good but there are many excellent alternatives in Ludlow. Breakfast very good.

Review 115:Room was tired and filthy. Bath was covered in scum and dirt around and under the taps, walls were scuffed, blankets - yes brown blankets- on bed smelled unclean, corridor outside smelled like a gents urinal. Staff member on check in was clearly disinterested and dismissive although check out staff member was pleasant enough. I contemplated and explored booking in somewhere else for the night just to avoid the disgusting room- but decided to brave it and not waste even more money. Couldn't face breakfast although we had paid for it because of the cleanliness issue- and went elsewhere. A horrible experience and extremely over priced.

Review 116:Nothing

Review 117:We found the information leading you to your room was very poor, the maze of corridors could be confusing to elderly people and needs to be looked at.

Review 118:The history of the Feathers, and staying where travellers have have forthe past 500 years or so. Real atmosphere within the hotel, but with friendly staff, lovely food and good facitities.

Review 119:Very small television for the size of the room.

Review 120:Lovely old hotel with lots of history. Friendly, helpful staff. Lovely log fires and very doggie friendly as so many hotels that say they are, actually are not. Lovely room, not put in the attic! Very convenient for stepping out straight into the town to explore. Bar food was very good and again, very courteous staff.Would certainly go back.

Review 121:The entrance to the hotel from the car park had not been swept since Christmas. Because the dinning room was empty we decided on bar meals I chose sausage and mash a mistake sadly sausages had been cooked for breakfast and then re cooked and reconstituted mash not pleasant I am afraid

Review 122:Breakfast

Review 123:Nothing, really.

Review 124:Bearing in mind that this is a very old building, our room was large with a separate seating area and window seats. The bed was very comfortable. Despite being in the centre of town, it was very peaceful.

Review 125:The two primary requirements for a hotel are a good bed and a good shower. The bed was comfortable. The shower water pressure was pathetic and not acceptable for a good hotel particularly as we had paid extra for a superior room. Would have expected an old style bar in keeping with this grand build but this seems to have been substituted with a bland characterless bar. Seemingly endless corridors, steps, slopes and doors between the reception and the room.

Review 126:Central location with good free parking. Good service in the bar.

Review 127:Room could do with a good clean

Review 128:Great breakfast and our waiter was very attentive. He also suggested local places to visit such as the bell tower on church, great views.

Review 129:Staff at check in and in the restaurant seemed to care less. Check out reception was kind. Wifi was dodgy but glad to have some.

Review 130:Room was great. Food was too. Lounges w fireplaces were phenomenal! Atmosphere was lovely

Review 131:The bedroom was fairly ordinary and looked out over the car park. Tea for 2 in the lounge was quite pricey.

Review 132:We loved the cosy guest lounge on the first floor with the open fire. We didn't eat dinner in the hotel, but it was only a 5 minute walk from the castle and plenty of lovely places to eat.

Review 133:Slightly tired corridors, poor soundproofing. Everything in the room was clean and worked but it was quite old (looked 80s style). Not a problem as such for the price I paid but I might have been more concerned had I paid more.

Review 134:Location, historic areas, breakfast, bar staff, breakfast staff, spacious room

Review 135:The pillows were not comfortable particularly for one with a neck problem - and the loo paper could have been softer and stronger.

Review 136:Always accommodating, best location for the town and a beautiful building inside and out. We love the authenticity of the old building when walking across the bedroom we found ourselves going downhill and the undulating corridors were also testament to its age and character. Also, although we were right on the roadside the room was really quiet.

Review 137:My overall impression was that it needs some updating in terms of furnishings and pictures, and I haven't seen sheets and blankets on a hotel bed for years. The food on the night of my visit was rather underwhelming, and breakfast, in a dark corner of the restaurant, was not a very sympathetic experience either - a little disappointing considering the cost of the overnight stay.

Review 138:The location is ideal, being in the town centre and with parking - a bonus. The hotel was comfortable and quaint, and the bedroom (found it eventually by going along several corridors, up and down stairs and through seven fire doors) was clean and warm. Staff were helpful and efficient, though not especially warm and welcoming on the day of my visit.

Review 139:the bar area on the ground floor was very squashed and quite ordinary only redeeming feature was the beautiful roaring fire

Review 140:The staff were very pleasant and extremely helpful. The beds were warm and comfortable and our rooms were spacious

Review 141:- elevated toilet in bathroom with 2 steps up was dangerous in the dark at night - grouting around the bath needs re-doing - did not look nice - common areas were cool/cold (OK it was winter) - could do with a bigger bed

Review 142:- hotel frontage - James 1st Room - location in centre of town - the history of the place

The Fine Print

Please note that pets can only be accommodated in some rooms.Guests should book tables for the restaurant in advance to avoid disappointment.
