Reviews for Trout Hotel

Review 1:At check in staff lacked enthusiasm and seemed preoccupied with arranging personal activities unrelated to myself and partner checking in. Very poor! I have not encountered this in any of the other quality hotels we visited in 2015. Also didn't tell me that my car was about to be flooded in their car park. (Staff smoking area nearby). Poor lasting impression of a lovely hotel. Hotel was flooded later that day. A real shame.

Review 2:Really modern room, on par with contemporary hotels. Really smashing breakfast.

Review 3:The only thing I would comment on is the lack of vegetarian items for the cooked breakfast. I was surprised that a veggie breakfast was not on the menu and when I inquired whether they could cook me a veggie sausage the waitress said that the chef "does not carry any vegetarian items". I found this surprising in this day and age and my cooked breakfast ended up being scrambled egg, beans and tomato which was quite disappointing.

Review 4:We loved our stay at the Trout hotel ! The room was very cute and had a view of the river. The receptionist walked us up to the room upon check in which I thought was a nice touch. We ate in the restaurant the night we stayed and had an amazing meal and lots of tasty drinks

Review 5:Disappointed that dining was fully booking in evening when we arrived at about 2.30

Review 6:Room very comfortable. Pictures everywhere interesting, often local views helped to create pleasant environment.

Review 7:in the centre of cockermouth, good junction for roads to visit the lakes and the coast, and at the end of the day, a nice hotel to relax and enjoy an evening meal

Review 8:Carpets in the corridor need cleaning and did not reflect the great standard of the rooms. Restaurant was good but slightly overpriced for the quality in my opinion. Starter was excellent main good.

Review 9:Room was very comfortable and clean.

Review 10:Poor carpets in hallway to bedrooms let down the quality ambience of the hotel.

Review 11:Excellent room. Lovely view. Food excellent and reasonable price. Good location, good parking.

Review 12:Staff went around all guests in bar to ask them all to be quiet at night... no one was rowdy just general chatter. Unusual for staff to do this at a very busy weekend of guests.

Review 13:Location

Review 14:Friendly, helpful staff. Good bedrooms and good quality fixtures and fittings. Restaurants very popular with locals as well as guests and can make it difficult to get a table in the restaurant if you don't book in good time.

Review 15:The carpets on the corridor to the rooms looked dirty & stained Car Park space limited when busy

Review 16:Reception Staff super helpfull Resturant staff freindly and good service, remembered my name throughout stay.

Review 17:The carpets outside the room & in the corridors were dirty & needed vacuuming. At breakfast order was taken but didn't get what was asked for. I wasn't the only one that was disappointed with the attention to detail.

Review 18:Room was clean & comfortable.

Review 19:Beautiful room. Great food and bars. Lovely outdoor areas. Riverside walks on the doorstep. Very close to shops, bars and restaurant. An excellent hotel all round.

Review 20:The food was disappointing. For elderly people the portion sizes were overwhelming and sadly put them completely off their meal, even though the food in the evening was good. The breakfast - an excellent selection - but hot food disappointing - my sister and I had eggs benedict - the eggs were solid and cold - we should have sent them back, but did not have time, as we needed to leave for appointments.

Review 21:Friendly helpful staff. They were kind and helpful with my elderly parents.

Review 22:Very disappointed in my meal in the dining room (odd mixture and tough monkfish). Would not use it again.

Review 23:Excellent location, lovely rooms, very generous breakfast

Review 24:There was a light on outside the window in the car park at night and a machine sound, relatively quiet but persistent, was a little disturbing on the first night.

Review 25:The river at the back and the birdsong are very soothing.

Review 26:We stayed for our Ruby wedding anniversary as we had spent our honeymoon here. It still had the same atmosphere. Thank you to all who made it a special stay for both of us.

Review 27:Rooms were very nice and Breakfast was included in the room rate and was amazing. My husband had a cooked breakfast however I refrained as there were so many other choices of cereal, fruit, croissants, pastries etc. The staff were also outstanding - all very pleasant, helpful etc.

Review 28:The breakfast was excellent with the exception of the toast, better quality bread would have made it for me. Also cooked food plates weren't cleared away from the table. Only small points and wouldn't stop us recommending this hotel

Review 29:Good staff and quality of food

Review 30:The hotel could do with a larger car park for the guests, as the restaurant attracts many non guests. Arriving back at the hotel mid evening to find the car park full. To be fair though, the staff did direct me to another parking area, so all was ok.

Review 31:Nice hotel, clean and traditional with good service. The bed was amongst the most comfortable I've ever slept-in, in a hotel. Would we stay at the Trout Hotel again? Most definitely.

Review 32:Would have prefered a room at the back of the hotel as we did experience disturbance from road noise.

Review 33:Comfortable, good sized room. Room and bathroom both very clean. Friendly, helpful staff. Good relaxed atmosphere.

Review 34:The room we were given(112) had very small windows and we hardly slept for the 2 nights we were there because of the heat.

Review 35:The food is first class and the terrace was a lovely area to sit and chill

Review 36:That we only stayed three nights!

Review 37:Everything! From walking through the front door and being greeted with smiles and cheerful faces. Room lovely (402) and very spacious, clean and bed very comfortable.

Review 38:The dining room at breakfast was a bit hectic as everyone seemed to come down together. Guess this couldnt be helped.

Review 39:We enjoyed the gardens so relaxing it was perfect x

Review 40:We initially had a room with very high windows and it was very hot. The staff quickly offered us an alternative which was greatly appreciated.

Review 41:Very central to town and pubs. We liked the fact that we could leave the car and take a stroll to the shops. Lovely views and lovely, helpful staff.

Review 42:Asked if we could book a table in the Bistro. Told we didn't have to, arrived at 8 to find that we had to sit outside. Had to clear & clean table myself.

Review 43:Nothing

Review 44:staff made us feel very special gave us upgrade when we told them it was Sheila's birthday The room was fantastic so quiet and big It has the best pint of Jennings cockerhoop in the lakes

Review 45:Everything was perfect!

Review 46:The service, the staff and hotel facilities are excellent. We receive a an very good treatment. The hotel is quiet, clean and very confortable. The room refers to a proper high standard. It s the second time we visited and we will come back foresure!

Review 47:The extractor fan in the bathroom stayed on all night and as the head of the bed was close to the bathroom door it kept me awake. I thought the food and drink were a little pricey latohugh the quality was fine

Review 48:Very friendly staff, especially the waitress at dinner and breakfast. Nice room, ver clean and comforatable. Very nice TV. Excellent breakfast

Review 49:The room we were given was 105 right behind the boiler room . It was so hot we couldn't sleep and had to listen to the continual background noise from there. Windows only open a fraction . Staff were unconcerned but obviously knew about this. We have stayed before with no problem at rooms near carpark. For £125 it was very poor.

Review 50:The staff .

Review 51:Location of bedroom which was next to a fire escape and used for deliveries and also left open for members of the public to use as they pleased. Maintenance work was also been carried out both on the building and in carpark which we were not made aware of prior to making the booking. The carpets throughout the ground floor appeared water damaged and were a dreadful site.

Review 52:The location. Lovely setting.

Review 53:Only the weather disappointing. We had a very nice balcony area that we could not enjoy due to weather.

Review 54:Everything in our room was well equipped spacious clean and very comfortable. Staff were friendly and extremely efficient. Food was wonderful would recommend this hotel.

Review 55:Only dog friendly part of hotel was terrace, back stairs to room. Room was positioned beside the extractor fan from kitchen which was quite loud.

Review 56:Very friendly and helpful waiting staff. Great breakfast and evening meals good.

Review 57:2nd time we have been at the trout, both times we failed to be able to get a table in the restaurant, it was fully booked, also room 101 we will not use again, it overlooks the car park and entrance so not possible to have window and curtains open it also is subject to noise as it is adjacent the service entrance

Review 58:local alternative facilities

Review 59:We had to take our luggage through the lounge and Bistro, which was quite busy up stairs to our room. Also as a resident you could not book a table in the Bistro, you had to play Russian roulete when you arrived back to the hotel after a day out hoping to get a table.

Review 60:The food was excellent

Review 61:It was difficult to get any fresh air into our room so sleeping was challenging.

Review 62:We liked the location and the view out our bedroom window of the river.

Review 63:Asked for quiet room - given one next to the meter wide kitchen extraction pipe. Room was two floors up - staircase narrow enough to be dangerous. Did not want a full meal so asked if we could book table in Bistro - answer NO. When we went down at 7pm no tables, people waiting. we ate elsewhere in town. Not good enough

Review 64:Superb WiFi throughout hotel.

Review 65:The A La Carte menu was very pricey so didn't try that.

Review 66:The bedroom and the bed were very comfortable. We were on the ground floor where there is also a 'disabled' room which is even more spacious. It is situated on the banks of the river where you can have tea or a drink or in the lovely garden. The breakfast was excellent with lots of hot choices, fresh fruit salads and cereals. The bistro menu was good and not too expensive.

Review 67:None

Review 68:Location was quiet next to a river beautiful scenery. Lovely room big room full facilities breakfast was a joy full availability of food was on offer

Review 69:Not being the best of sleepers I found the noise in our room a but disturbing last thing at night and first thing in the morning. Couldn't figure out what it was, it sounded like a tumble dryer noise but have no idea.

Review 70:Location, room, food and staff

Review 71:It would be helpful to limit parking to residential guests. The hotel gets very buy with people eating and drinking and priority should be given to parking for those who need to park in the hotel car park. On our stay the car park was so full theta those staying were forced to park all over the place, yet there is a barrier available.

Review 72:Central location. Good room.

Review 73:The room we stayed in could only be accessed by walking through the Bistro / Bar area.

Review 74:As mentioned above the staff were polite and very attentive. Hotel was clean. A nice charming place to stay.

Review 75:Bathroom could have been better and should be upgraded to modern standards.

Review 76:Stayed in the hotel for 2 nights with friends. Hotel was of great standard, clean, nice location, great views. Easy to commute to various lakes. Located right in the cockermouth city centre. Staff was really helpful.

Review 77:First night in room 311 not great because of two really big extractor fans blasting away outside the window in the early hours. Moved to a very nice room (113) by helpful and pleasant staff. Our first room should be advertised at a significantly reduced rate explaining the problem - it is otherwise a really nice room with old fashioned charm in the roof space.

Review 78:Really good quality hotel in a great location with helpful and friendly local staff. Sitting out in the garden enjoying a quiet drink on the banks of the river is something special.

Review 79:everything about the stay was excellent from initial welcome from friendly staff, lovely room, delicious food both at night and at breakfast, fantastic service. All of whichmDe it a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Review 80:Had to walk through a very busy resteraunt with all our luggage to get to our room.

Review 81:Friendly helpfull staff. Location of the hotel is very good. Food in the resteraunt is very good. Easy access to all local amenaties. Room was basic but nice.

Review 82:As with other buildings of it's period, the hotel has plenty of steps and stairs, with rooms on different levels. Therefore people with mobility issues should speak to the hotel first. The kitchen was slow to keep up with the lunch period when we attended.

Review 83:Room decor and fittings. Amiable staff and excellent location.

Review 84:The only negative thing about this hotel was I was given a glass from the bar which still had lipstick on. I mentioned it to the waiter who offered me another drink but I declined the offer.

Review 85:We only stayed here for one night but we had a restful stay. We had a room with a river view which was quiet. Perfect for two tired travellers. I would definitely stay again.

Review 86:There's no lift, so if you're allocated a room on the top floor, be prepared to climb a lot of stairs with your luggage! Difficult to park your car, due to lack of spaces.

Review 87:Friendly staff and great breakfast.

Review 88:My room position although the view of the river was good unfortunately it was noisy from the kitchen extractor fans.

Review 89:Relaxing atmosphere.ombiance. Breakfast menu good and well cooked.

Review 90:This is the way that all hotels should be run. The staff were excellent, the facilities were fabulous and the food delicious. A very relaxing and comfortable stay.

Review 91:no bad experience, just a shame the dogs couldnt enter the pub however i understand it is so busy that it makes sense.

Review 92:hotel was modern, clean and great value for money. Splendid food, which seemed maybe a bit pricey but portions were impressive. Everything eaten over the course of 2 days was delicious. Rooms were very clean and modern, even the dog designated rooms were a delightful surprise.

Review 93:The only downside for me was that although the bed was comfortable the bedding made me very hot as duvet and pillows poor although sheets etc good quality.

Review 94:Receptionists friendly and helpful. Good size room overlooking river. Convenient location in Cockermouth.

Review 95:Our bedroom was a bit dark and we thought the decor a bit 80's I

Review 96:Friendliness of the staff particularly on reception Very approachable staff in dining room

Review 97:Would be further enhanced if hotel had a lift, Bit of a struggle for the more mature to carry cases to second floor.

Review 98:Clean ,comfortable, very good breakfast,

Review 99:Staff outstanding, nothing too much trouble. Ever member as good as each other. Rooms wonderful with everthing you could need. Breakfast perfect. Cleanest hotel ive ever stayed in.

Review 100:I am a former resident of Cockermouth but this was my first visit to the Trout. The hotel exceeded all our expectations. Cockermouth is so picturesque and clean, a fact that I failed to realise when living in the area.

Review 101:Bathroom not very clean there was Pubic hairs around the toilet and windowsill, Not Good for a Four Star Hotel, and in the morning breakfast we where shocked to see Yoghurt / Yoghurt Health Drink from Aldi, We paid £80.00 for the night and had a Cheap Breakfast, Not the Best four Star hotel i have been to.

Review 102:location

Review 103:The menu prices were a little high, but good selection.

Review 104:The location was very pleasant, the hotel was very clean and friendly, the food was excellent quality, and presented well.

Review 105:The bathroom window could do with been frosted glass don't like the idea everyone can see you on the loo and the car park was not big enough for those staying at the hotel

Review 106:The room was very clean and bright had a good nights sleep

Review 107:Street noise and corridor noise, and next door bathroom noise

Review 108:Size of room, cleanliness of room , hot water, tea tray, comfort of bed and free wifi! Free parking, garden area .

Review 109:the cost of staying at the trout .badley stained corridor carpets on the ground floor dont think they have been changed after the flood the bath was very small, ok if your a dwarf i suppose

Review 110:the breakfast

Review 111:Nothing that we didn't like. Everything about our stay was indeed very positive.

Review 112:The location and the amenities of the hotel. Informal and polite atmosphere which made our stay very relaxing with options to explore.

Review 113:The hotel was very hot, slept with the window open at the front of the hotel but was noisy for a quiet town...I know the hotel can't do anything about this. You have to walk past a dining area to get to the main stair case, a bit off putting

Review 114:The room was clean, staff helpful, in the town centre

Review 115:Our dinner experience in the restaurant was a bit of a let down. The food was good but not quite 'there' nor was the service; we weren't offered so in the end had to ask for bread, water, the wine list, items of cutlery and so on. The person in charge was brusque and made a withering remark to my husband (ditto at breakfast). He had extolled the virtues of the hotel and restaurant to me beforehand, so that was a bit disappointing. We were a bit surprised it didn't hit the Mark but it didn't ruin our stay as the hotel offers so many good things and overall we liked it very much.

Review 116:The hotel enjoys pole position in Cockermouth. Our room was spacious, all the usual facilities and spotless. No unexpected joys but no nasty surprises either. Breakfast was really excellent (though you might struggle if you want an offering that isn't traditional cooked option) as was the whole brasserie / bar dining experience, it's a shame you can't book as there was pressure on tables on the Saturday we ate there.

Review 117:This hotel was a find for me. I stay in the Lake District regularly but never Cockermouth before. Situated close to the river and easy walking to the market town centre its situation is ideal. All staff were very professional, the room well maintained, clean and bright. Breakfast was brilliant.

Review 118:The bacon served at breakfast on the first day was overcooked and discolored. At the first evening meal the meat in the Stroganoff took a lot of chewing. At the second evening meal the "homemade chips" were 'limp'. When I complained about the breakfast I was assured there would be some recompense, I am still waiting to see what that is !!! The car park does not appear to be adequate on occasions, and the parking bay I had to use on the second night faced down hill towards the river without any protection to prevent a car rolling away. There was no full length mirror in my room.

Review 119:The room and bathroom were excellent and kept very clean The hotel is well situated for taking advantage of the facilities in Cockermouth, shops, banks, pubs and restaurants, and there is a good selection.

Review 120:personally I would have liked more choice on bar food menu.what we had was very good.

Review 121:Not much I didn't like about this hotel,it would be hard to make a bad comment.

Review 122:Lack of space in bar area, the noise from the road outside the room.

Review 123:Nice rooms, good selection of whisky and other drinks behind bar. Breakfast was very tasty

Review 124:The only bad thing we have to say is the WIFI is painfully slow.

Review 125:The location was perfect with a good view of the river. Very helpful and friendly staff.

Review 126:Nothing!

Review 127:The Trout is a charming hotel with excellent, spacious and week kept rooms. The breakfast and evening food was very well done. Staff were friendly.

Review 128:The room was a bit noisy as located over kitchen area, but this was only noticeable while the kitchen was operating. Our sleep was in no way disturbed.

Review 129:The food was excellent and the staff welcoming and friendly.

Review 130:Being pestered by Booking.com to submit a review of a hotel on repeat visits!

Review 131:We often stay at the Trout Hotel - I shouldn't have to keep on reviewing it each time we stay there! It is excellent! Just accept it at that!

Review 132:Can't think of anything we didn't like apart from the weather as it was December.

Review 133:Everything about the hotel was perfect it was just what we wanted for a birthday celebration. The view from the bedroom was lovely looking over the river Derwent. The bar service was excellent and the breakfast was lovely a full English to be recommended sets you up for the day.

Review 134:Good prices a little strap for essentially pub food. No TV in the bar area?

Review 135:Clean and spacious room. Staff brilliant and friendly. Decent overall stay

Review 136:really could not anything to blame about the hotel and i will certainly come again

Review 137:very friendly staff really good breakfast good premise parking very clean and well maintained rooms

Review 138:Bed was a little small, I can't remember when I was last in a 4 star hotel that didn't have king size beds. Noise of Air-con units directly beneath our window.

Review 139:Excellent location next to the river and close to the charming town of Cockermouth. Pleasant room and lovely breakfast served by very attentive staff.
