Reviews for White Lion Hotel

Review 1:Only down side - the creaking floorboards in the corridor - sounded like someone was coming into the room a couple of times!

Review 2:Very comfortable, good food and reasonably priced. Will definitely use again.

Review 3:Beds not very comfortable. Some facilities in room were poor. Bathroom very cramped. Curtains covered radiator when in use.

Review 4:Friendly efficient staff, good value.

Review 5:No light in the walk in wardrobe/cupboard.

Review 6:Made to feel very welcome, friendly helpful staff, facilities excellent. Breakfast very good, lots of choice.

Review 7:Only very minor thing is that we do like our breakfast tea to be served in a teapot, not a cup with a tea bag in it, (with nowhere to dispose of the teabag! )

Review 8:The refurbished bedrooms and restaurant are excellent and the food was all first class! The staff are all friendly and helpful and restaurant service was high class! We will definitely return!

Review 9:Attention to detail in the rooms was lacking. Leaks in the bathroom were evident and would only have taken a quick lick of paint to put right

Review 10:Loved the pub and its charm especially the cosy log burner. Friendly staff and food was lovely. Great breakfast

Review 11:Nice place well situated good value for money. Room well equipted but may have been a bit small for two people. Staff friendly. Good food both for breakfast and evening meal, Wifi excellent so important for work.

Review 12:Pulled off the M6 due to traffic and found this, very close but in a quiet village. Great room (apparently one of the unrefurbished ones but very good). Good restaurant with lots of non-guests and fantastic breakfast. Thoroughly recommended!

Review 13:A very comfortable hotel in a little village close to Crewe. Good room and ensuite, clean and comfortable. A lively bar/restaurant, very popular with excellent food and well served beer.

Review 14:Experience was good overall however when suite was cleaned no replacement coffee pods, biscuits or hot chololate was replaced.

Review 15:Liked views from property and quality of bathrooms especially in our suite.

Review 16:The ONLY thing we could have been more comfortable (and that was our fault) was to ask for a lighter blanket at night, the duvet was too warm but the air was too cool not to have it on!

Review 17:The Inn itself was an exciting experience. That, combined with the food (!!!), the staff, there is nothing to be negative about!

Review 18:The only problem we had was finding the place.Sat nav with post code takes you to the Elephant pub a mile and a half away.Co-ordinates work though.

Review 19:Staff were really accommodating, nothing was to much trouble.Restaurant was excellent and reasonably priced.Would certainly go back and we live 160miles away

Review 20:"Some " of the staff could have been more pleasant Was VERY disappointed when drinks and a sweet had been added to our bill that were not ours, and no apology when we pointed this out

Review 21:Our stay was okay except for a few problems, so not sure if would stay there again

Review 22:Miserable staff on the bar could just about raise a smile Having drinks and a portion of ice cream added to our bill when we hadn't had them When issue was raised no apology given just pressed button on till and gave another receipt

Review 23:Food was very good

Review 24:Nothing comes to mind to dislike at all.

Review 25:A lucky find when I was looking around the Crewe area. Was my first stay but will certainly be going back for more nice food and a pleasant overnight stay.Very popular place, but accommodation far enough away from bar for a very peaceful sleep.Staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 26:It said I didn't need a password for the free wifi, but I did and there was no answer at reception. It was 10.30.

Review 27:The value for money angle. The room was small, but lovely.

Review 28:Shabby. Although 'refurbished' it's a slap of paint in some areas but not all. Cobwebs on bedroom ceiling, window frames mouldy, bad lighting in room, mirror not located near plugs or light for hair and make up.

Review 29:Comfortable bed

Review 30:The historic building that had a high standard of comfort. The qualitiy of the rooms. The nice service. The location (countryside yet not out of the way).

Review 31:We arrived fairly late and received a warm welcome and a lovely meal (which we had not booked) in the restaurant. A very pleasant two night stay as part of a longer travelling itinery.

Review 32:Can't really complain as we were in the non refurbished room but pleased that management recognizes need to update. Only real problem was beds now getting towards end of their life.

Review 33:Friendly staff remembered us from before and the reason for our visit , family move to the village.

Review 34:No clothes on tables Food adequate but not spectacular but certainly suited our needs

Review 35:Welcome by member of staff was lovely and she was very helpful and friendly

Review 36:Getting to the venue was a nightmare. I believe a more precise location for sat av users would be a valuable asset.

Review 37:The food &I drink facilities where great. The total ambience of the entire place was a great relief after some of the places we have stayed in.

Review 38:The Western Suiter was very dated. There was mould on the curtains, window frames and in the bathroom. There were stains on the carpet , on the walls and on the ceiling of the bathroom. When we talked to reception we were told it was to be refurbished. We were offered no reduction to compensate for this.

Review 39:We really liked the bar and resturant area. We ate an evening meal and also breakfast. Both we very good and the staff were friendly and attentive.

Review 40:Not too far from M6, easy to find, pleasant, quiet room, good evening meal on site which was good as a solo business traveler. Lovely staff on reception and breakfast duty. Good breakfast set me up for the day working at the Tatton Flower Show

Review 41:The staff were welcoming, pleasant, helpful and we're HAPPY to do all they could to make our stay memorable. We wouldn't hesitate to come here again; indeed, if we want to find a place around here for ourselves or our friends, this will be our first place to call.

Review 42:even after phoning to confirm booking we were allocated 2 x double bed rooms 1 with an extra bed and 1 twin room. we had asked for 3 x twin rooms we were charged extra for the roll away bed which was not needed. The bill was wrong on depature which caused great difficulty and upset to my daughter who was left stranded with no money.

Review 43:Staff very pleasant and particularly tolerant of an active and inqiisative 5 year old

Review 44:We requested an early check in which was granted. The hotel staff were extremely pleasant, the facilities are great, we couldn't fault it and hope to visit again.

Review 45:Hadn't booked to stay there the previous night!

Review 46:Having had a night in the cold souless Ramada what a joy to stay in such comfortable surroundings. The room, the bed, the setting all perfect for my needs.

Review 47:I got next to no sleep on the first night of the stay. There was a humming, like a bathroom fan. All night. Really annoying. Mentioned it to the staff who were very apologetic but said they were fully booked so couldn't move us to a different room. On the second night the noise was intermittent, but still there much of the time. I do not like to make a fuss, but having stayed there before in a lovely and quiet room I was very disappointed, hence this review and a low score for comfort. Apologies are nice, but I paid for a bedroom I couldn't sleep in.

Review 48:The room was comfortable and a nice size. The staff were friendly. The bed was large and very comfortable. The room was not too hot, like in lots of hotels that have heating but not aircon.

Review 49:Staff was helpful and lovely The hotel was beautiful, the room ready as early as we needed it, the garden and the surrounding area really nice as well, we had a lovely time!

Review 50:The old coaching inn has lots of charm. The rooms very comfortable and the food good. The cost of accommodation was very reasonable. A very enjoyable stay.

Review 51:Toilet a bit cramped

Review 52:Friendly, helpful and polite staff. Great breakfast. Free parking. Relaxed atmosphere, good bar. Great for a stopover & close to M6 - recommended.

Review 53:The food & wine in the restaurant were both good. Staff were friendly & helpful. The room itself was quite small & basic but clean. The only problem is that the curtains are very thin so it was bright from dawn i.e no lie in! The front of the building is old & beautiful. The grounds are also large & would be perfect in good weather.

Review 54:had a lovely lunch on arrival. On checking in we were upgraded to a suite, which made my birthday even more special. Breakfast was excellent. thank you

Review 55:Pillows need to be renewed also a hole in the bath towel not good .....spider in the bathroom cupboard dead. These problems are easily rectified by good housekeeping and seeing we were the only guests staying surely they could have checked all this out.

Review 56:The room was clean and not a bad size.

Review 57:All good.

Review 58:Staff efficient & friendly. Popular with the locals as a foodie pub of good quality. Lovely room - comfortable, spacious and with all the amenities.

Review 59:WiFi is problematic, which is an issue when the O2 signal is also poor.

Review 60:I stayed in a non refurbished room, so the decor was dated (but they also have refurbished rooms which I will try next time). Despite this, the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The highlight was the food, great evening meal and freshly cooked breakfast in the morning.

Review 61:The bathroom was small - but that was a very minor issue and there was nothing else not to like.

Review 62:The staff were particularly friendly and helpful. The food was also very good - and particularly good value for the money.

Review 63:Need better lighting in bedroom, a good bedside light pleasr

Review 64:My second stay, and better than the first as the wifi booster in the rooms means the connectivity was excellent. Friendly, efficient staff, great evening meal, comfortable clean room (#11 although a bedside light would be a good idea, the wallmounted light was not sufficient

Review 65:An ideal stop en route to the Lake District as too far in one hop. I will be back and so will friends as we do the journey often......and a holiday let so will recommend you.

Review 66:Arriving at 6:30pm but unable to book meal in restaurant - could have been advised or invited to book in advance. Plumbing noise whenever hot taps were turned on.

Review 67:Comfortable bedding. Free Wi-Fi. Very good breakfast. Good location.

Review 68:Last check in was 10pm, which was our fault for not reading the details, but we didn't expect it. Luckily someone let us in or I don't know what we would have done!

Review 69:Good value and friendly staff

Review 70:Stayed on a Saturday night and the restaurant was packed. Staff very accommodating but may be worth advising people to book if they want to eat.

Review 71:Very friendly staff willing to help

Review 72:I was struggling with my bags up the stairs but no offer of assistance from the staff showing me to the room. Ordered lamb for dinner, flavour completely masked by an uncomplimentary sauce. A poorly designed dish. Tasted like the same sauce served with the not very spiced cumberland sausage starter. Unsupportive mattress on a solid unsprung base. Poor noise insulation - woken by conversations in the adjoining room at 2am. Poor quality breakfast, bacon was so salty I couldn't eat it.

Review 73:Convenient for work location. Clean & well appointed. Newspaper at breakfast.

Review 74:The single bed, although with lovely clean, fresh sheets, was uncomfortable. But that could just be down to taste. Everyone loves their own bed.

Review 75:Scrambled eggs for breakfast were delicious! A new shower suite with good pressure and hot water was also very much appreciated.

Review 76:Not too sure about other rooms but room no 1 is awfully small Buffet and Hot Breakfast not available till 8 AM on weekends

Review 77:Friendly staff WiFi works well

Review 78:No soundproofing between the floors, so lots of noise from upstairs. Noisy plumbing kept us awake. Wifi didn't work in our room. Didn't provide for our dietary requests, despite asking if we had any, but luckily staff were very helpful.

Review 79:The staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 80:The room was cold and although we complained to reception about the tepid temperature of the water, this was not resolved

Review 81:The bed was very comfortable and the breakfast excellent

Review 82:A small detail but if someone books and asks for a gluten free menu it would be thoughtful to put gluten free biscuits in the room. I have not found any hotel that does this.

Review 83:The food was excellent and the staff were helpful. I had stayed at the White Lion before and never been disappointed.

Review 84:Rooms and hall ways very dated doesn't reflect the rest of the place

Review 85:Great location for me very close to the motorway. Food was great and the staff very helpful

Review 86:Though meal was nice would give better choice and we both ordered steak which was so tough just glad we had a sauce

Review 87:Staff very friendly and helpful nice mordern makeover easy to find bedroom had everything you needed would tell friends about you

Review 88:Bedroom and bathroom needed complete refurbish/cleaned. Cobwebs found in bathroom and bedroom. Bar staff not efficient in charging bills.Completely over charged on account.

Review 89:Good Food

Review 90:Bedrooms and bathrooms need refurb which I believe is on the cards and should then be a really good place to stay.we will definately stay here again once that has taken place.

Review 91:Restaurant and food are excellent. the bar area and restaurant have recently been refurbished to a high standard , it has a very nice atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Review 92:The mattress in my bedroom.

Review 93:Impressed by trendy dining decor and good food. Look forward to the next stage in their plan to update their bedrooms. Will visit again.

Review 94:Hotel having problems (not of their doing, I believe) with wifi, so was not able to do any work in bedroom or public areas. They are waiting for BT to sort it out, but this's was very frustrating as I was on business and could not use my time productively in the evenings.

Review 95:Great place, fab food, very welcoming and pleasant staff. Will definitely stay again... BUT only when they can guarantee their wifi problems have been sorted.

Review 96:- Hotel bedrooms did not match the quality & style of the pub/restaurant - real shame - TV didn't work in room, so had to move from a double to a twin, fine as I was on my own but wouldn't be happy if a couple

Review 97:- Decor & style of restaurant/pub - Quality and choice of food & wine menu - Presentation of food - All staff very friendly & helpful

Review 98:The bedrooms are as stated a bit tired so we knew this when booking. We were on the ground floor and there was a lot of noise from above with creaking floors and toilets flushing and unfortunately we could even hear someone snoring in the night! The wifi was just about there, only able to get emails and not much else, but again for a stopover on the M6 good value for the price!

Review 99:This hotels restaurant and bar is very spacious and modern, the staff were attentive and very friendly. We had an excellent lunch and delicious dinner both priced very reasonably. The breakfast was freshly cooked with a good choice. Would thoroughly recommend this for value for money!

Review 100:No dislikes

Review 101:We have known the White Lion all our lives, but now live away from the area, it was so lovely to see it getting back to its old excellent self once again after a few barren years.

Review 102:Struggled to gain access in the early hours after attending a wedding reception due to problems with the external door

Review 103:Proximity to Crewe Hall Toiletries in bathroom Excellent food

Review 104:The accommodation is very tired and dated. The rooms are far from the great standard of the bar and restaurant. Thread bare carpet on the stairs very cheap looking rooms with very old everything.

Review 105:Lovely surroundings in the bar and restaurant

Review 106:Sagging twin beds in room 7 , argued (yes, argued !)by reception that they were 'new'. Got a non refurbished room, having been told it had been refurbished. Not being told at check in, that Breakfast is only served until 9 am ( really?) Shame really, because I had been so positive about the place in the past. Will pay the extra and stay at Crewe Hall in future.

Review 107:Location is great and would've tied in with my new work status of visiting Crewe on a regular basis. Food is excellent (previous visits). Staff are excellent, apart from the young receptionist on Wednesday 10th morning shift.

Review 108:The ensuite was very small - Ok for us as we are not big people, but anyone larger would have struggled abit. I understand that renovations are in progress and maybe this will be corrected in furture. This is only a small niggle in what was a very good experience.

Review 109:We had booked a spa visit to Crewe Hall Hotel and the White Lion was an excellent alternative to the very expensive Crewe Hall. The food was excellent, the staff were friendly and helpful. There was plenty of parking space and comfortable places to sit out to enjoy the late evening sunshine. The location was beside a mainroad but we weren't disturbed by traffic noise at all. We were very pleased by our choice of hotel.

Review 110:The rooms could be updated

Review 111:Great food and comfortable surroundings Staff are friendly Close proximity to the motorway, without having to stay at a chain hotel

Review 112:There was nothing to dislike

Review 113:Quality of evening meal and breakfast was of a high standard. Room was clean and tidy. Staff were pleasant and and attentive.

Review 114:Very clean, friendly obliging and hospitable staff, good menu and excellent food, only problem was the wifi it was very poor but was apparently being sorted. Will def stay again if in area.

Review 115:Ensuite bathroom was where the room showed it's age but was ok and didn't detract from the quality of the room that much . Ended up being about 45 mins from Alton towers

Review 116:Bar and restraunt were fabulous . food pricy but was quality restraunt fare . Web site said the rooms hadn't been refurbished unlike downstairs and was expecting the worst but we were in the upstairs suite and it was fabulous large tv even larger bed couldn't fault the room .would definitely stop here again next time we are at Alton towers

Review 117:Bathroom could do with a shelf to put toilet bag etc. Internal walls do not insulate sound very well.

Review 118:Food was very well cooked - a pleasant change from many eateries. WIFI was really good and room well equipped -thus 8 milk sachets and chocolate drink, Plenty of space in room. En suite was dated BUT perfectly adequate - nothing wrong with coloured basin etc and not replacing keeps the price down.

Review 119:One of the nights I stayed was a Saturday night and I had very noisy occupants in the room above, but this wasn't the fault of the hotel.

Review 120:The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. The food was very good. I really enjoyed my stay here.

Review 121:Nothing

Review 122:We stayed here for just one night it was perfect, the food, rooms, staff, clean and dining room was very nice and I will certainly stay here next time we are in the area

Review 123:couldn.t get wifi in room even though wii booster right outside bedroom door. half a toilet roll !!!! - not good enough for a twin with 2 contractors going out and eating /drinking to extremes !! lol.

Review 124:place is lovely, 10 mins from town nice and clean restaurant etc- immaculate breakfast - superb beer gardens etc lovely crown bowls green on site !

Review 125:Rooms tired, beds, matress well worn, we were put in the Weston Suite on Sunday evening, lovely, well until I went into the bathroom, the tiles had black all around them it looked like they could do with a good clean, when I tried to shower the shower head was too heavy for the holder had to hold it up whilst showering. Rooms were clean just need attention in the bathrooms Couldn't get wi fi and there wasn't any info around on how to log on! Could do with a makeover in the rooms as restuarant and bar areas are clean and well decorated.

Review 126:Friendly Staff Good Food Good location Enjoyed watching bowls in the evening sunshine

Review 127:A shocking amount of mould in the shower cubicle in Room 11. I accepted that the bedroom would be dated and wasn't bothered about that. I had read an earlier review which mentioned mould in a shower and had assumed that the hotel would have acted immediately on the comment. Either they didn't or it is much more widespread through the hotel. Either case is unacceptable. I'm not an over-fussy person and I'm not just talking about a few black specks on the grout between the tiles. This was black mould over the full height of the cublicle and, worst of all, on the showerhead itself.

Review 128:The staff were very friendly and helpful

Review 129:Breakfast. Eggs was not cooked and Bacon not very well cooked. Everything eles was fine.

Review 130:Room and food very good we had a Lunch time meal was Excellent.

Review 131:We thought the bathroom was rather cramped and will be booking a larger room next time.

Review 132:We had a wonderful stay whilst visiting RHS Tatton garden show. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, excellent friendly staff and a superb meal in the restaurant and will definitely be returning, thankyou.

Review 133:Room is kind of small for 4ppl even your kids are young...

Review 134:Nice environment and atmospheres. If you are looking for England's traditional country style hotel around Crewe, this hotel is the one of the good choice.

Review 135:twin bedded room? should have been a single, shower cubicle full of mould Whilst not expensive still not value for money. I gather next year to be modernised, for me a year too late

Review 136:food and staff very good
