Reviews for The Derby Arms

Review 1:The staff were great and all made us (including the dog) very welcome. We ate in for both nights and the food was excellent. Breakfast was really nice too.

Review 2:The bedroom was chilly by 10pm and the quilt was quite light.

Review 3:The room was lovely, with a good view, staff friendly and helpful. Evening meal and breakfast were freshly prepared.

Review 4:No wardrobe and only small drawers and the room was freezing when I turned up. It must've taken 2-3 hrs to heat up because of draughty windows. They should at least put the heating on when they know someone will be staying.

Review 5:Room was ok although a little on the small side for a double. The bathroom was massive! With a nice roll top bath. Very clean with very comfortable bed. Pub was really nice with open fire, lovely beers and really good food.

Review 6:An authentic Cumbrian pub with a warm welcome, staff members couldn't be friendlier. Food was great. It was fantastic that the dogs were welcomed as well.

Review 7:Dirty bedding. Grubby decor. Uncomfortable bed. Noisy plumbing. No heating on the first night. Water not very hot.

Review 8:Friendly attentive staff. Great Restaurant. Great Pub Atmosphere

Review 9:Woken by noise coming from the pipes and from doors banging from 7am. Would have been nice if the fires were lits as the lighting in the bar and restuarant was quite harsh, so woud have set a lovely atmosphere.

Review 10:Room was spacious. The meal was delicious and good choice of drinks.

Review 11:A few bulbs were out or missing! Our room had a door on the bathroom but some dont so it was lucky we got room 7 otherwise i wouldn't have been happy.

Review 12:Great b&b. Pub has an amazing atmosphere. Food is very good however the english breakfast is alittle small. Bedroom and bathroom was fantastic with a roll top bath.

Review 13:Would have liked some soap for the bath - the handwash was in a fixed container by the basin and it was lucky we'd brought some shower gel.

Review 14:Lovely friendly staff and good pub food.

Review 15:Our second morning ( Sunday ) at breakfast we got 1 less rasher of bacon and 1 less tomato from the day before ( Saturday ) we love our cooked breakfast and felt cheated :-) but it was very tasty. Also it was cold at night and would of loved the fires to be burning whilst chilling out with a drink.

Review 16:It had a nice relaxing atmosphere with an oldie worldly feel which we love, the staff were friendly and chatty and we were well looked after.

Review 17:There was no hot water the second night or following morning.

Review 18:Staff were friendly and polite. The first morning we had to leave before breakfast was served (from 8:30) but a packed lunch was offered in lieu. Room was nicely furnished with a very comfortable bed. The food was above average too.

Review 19:We had a bedroom at the top of the stairs and there was no door to close at the bottom. The noise from the bar was very loud and went on until the early hours of the morning. Very disturbed sleep.

Review 20:There could be a bit more attention to detail. The shower gel was empty, there was some black in the shower cubicle that needed to be dealt with, the bedroom bin hadn't been emptied when we arrived and there was peeling paint on the bathroom ceiling. There didn't seem to be anyone in charge. If these things were dealt with it would have gone from 'good' to 'really good'.

Review 21:A nice, lively pub. They provided a really good cooked breakfast. Pleasant staff. Would return.

Review 22:Our second stay at The Derby Arms and once again the room was comfy, the food excellent and the staff couldn't be faulted. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it and will definitely be staying here again.

Review 23:There had been a thunder storm with very heavy rain that day. Upon being shown our room we noticed the bed was wet and there was a hole in the ceiling.

Review 24:The offer of a free night. No one from the Derby has contacted us.

Review 25:Room 7, the room felt a little damp as we entered, windows closed. No tea bags in room only coffee. Closing the room door on leaving was a problem, it had to be done with the yale key in the lock. The door was tight on the carpet, and it really needed a door handle.

Review 26:Room 7, roll top bath was very relaxing. Staff were lovely, food was excellent and so was the ale.

Review 27:Brilliant place to stay after a long journey. Food was delicious and rooms were comfy and clean. Barry was great, told him we were leaving before breakfast and offered to make us a packed lunch to take with us.

Review 28:The push / pull plug in the bathroom sink was faulty and stayed up all the time meaning I couldn't fill the sink to shave. There was a bit of paint flaking in the bathroom too. ** This next comment is not about the Derby Arms itself ** If you need a taxi to or from the pub I would advise booking it well in advance.

Review 29:The location was great even though on the map it appears close to a main road I don't recall it being a problem. It is obviously an old pub which has been brought up to date in terms of standards while retaining character from it's past. The staff were very friendly, helpful & personable.

Review 30:Problem with booking (our more expensive room was given to someone else) so offered a different room at a 'special' rate, which was the usual price for that room. Adverts everywhere for a Sun-Thurs rate but as we stayed Sat and Sun, we weren't eligible for them. Wifi didn't work in our room - had to sit in the bar. Room was at top of the stairs so incredibly noisy with other residents entering late at night via the fire door. We could also hear everything in the pub below us. No big mirror in room - had to use the bathroom mirror over sink. Shower leaked onto the bathroom floor.

Review 31:The food was amazing! The menu had a good choice and it was beautiful cooked and presented. Plenty of free off-street parking.

Review 32:I purchased this as a present for my parents . Unfortunately there stay was extremely unpleasant due to the lack of cleanliness in the downstairs area and lack of service and fercillities in the dinning area . Very disappointed . Would not recommend .

Review 33:Nothing, everything was perfect.

Review 34:Amazing! I loved every single minute spent in this hotel. Great beds, cool bar/restaurant downstairs, lovely place. And the brekafast.. yummy! Go there!

Review 35:None of the guests had any soap, unable to wash! Dead plants in pot at door. Very small room. No armchair. Breakfast hardly edible, served with uncooked cold beans. Choice of strawberry jam or strawberry jam.

Review 36:Evening meal was good. Bed comfortable. Friendly and helpful young staff.

Review 37:Unfortunately I stayed a weekend when a noisy wedding party was in.

Review 38:Staff were lovely, made me feel very welcome & like nothing was too much to ask.

Review 39:we didn't get shown to our room we just got our keys given, so when we wanted to nip out we didn't have a clue where to go

Review 40:the bed was so comfy I wanted to take it home

Review 41:Made mistake of booking room with roll top bath as there is no separate shower. If you like a shower book room without. Only a small point & certainly not a criticism of the place

Review 42:Intimate and friendly pub.

Review 43:A little bit out of the tourist areas, but would be great for walkers or cycling.

Review 44:Food was excellent, both dinner and breakfast. The roll top bath was lovely

Review 45:The staff were so, so friendly and the atmoshpere was very welcoming. Room was lovely, especially the bathroom and the breakfast was top notch! Easy to find and would definitely stay again

Review 46:Booking.com indicated a 'Continental Breakfast' was included when it was a very good 'Full English'. We hit on for the monthly Saturday night entertainment and 'The Chiefs' were a great Rock Band which was another bonus!

Review 47:The first room we were put in was tiny with barely enough room to open our bags. The shower had come away from the wall so we were moved for the second night. The second room we were in was much nicer with a lovely view of the countryside.

Review 48:Charming pub in the country. Witherslack is a tiny town though, so there's not much else around. We had breakfast and dinner at the pub, and the food was fantastic.

Review 49:When we arrived we were told that the Manager had inadvertently taken the room key home with her-this meant that we were given a different room which was a shame as it had a shower and not the roll top bath we were looking forward to. Also the pub unexpectedly stopped serving food 30 minutes early so we had to drive some distance (we'd already driven 300 miles to get there) to have some dinner. Also, disappointingly, there was no fresh coffee at breakfast, because they'd run out (still none on the subsequent two mornings). It was boil the kettle yourself and use a sachet of Nescafe.

Review 50:We have stayed here in the past and love the fact that when returning after a hard day's walking, there is no need to go out again.

Review 51:Nothingcou

Review 52:The staff were really pleasant and helpful and the food was delicious . It was nice that dogs are welcomed and that was the main reason we stayed , so everything else was a bonus

Review 53:nothing significant. The water pipes were a bit creaky.

Review 54:Everything from the roaring fires to the local beer selection. There was a live singer on the night we stopped which was a lovely surprise. The food was delicious especially the three venison sausage and mash dish. The bedroom was comfortable and the whole place was wonderfully clean. Overall this was a wonderful experience and I will be back again.

Review 55:No spare loo rolls in room, had to ask for tea bags, heating was not on so rooms were cold, had to ask staff to switch on radiators.

Review 56:Location - very peaceful & quiet. Pet-friendly. Food was excellent. Rooms were lovely.

Review 57:Bed was incredible - quite possibly the best I've ever slept on. Location is perfect for hiking and also within 15 minutes of most of the Lakes attractions. Staff are incredibly friendly and the food is fantastic - great experience.

Review 58:We didn't, however although because of technical difficulty in morning we couldn't settle bill fully and this is still ongoing.

Review 59:Staff and food.

Review 60:Breakfast was cooked at weekend, very good. Roll top bath was great, lovely bathroom. Decor was eclectic but tastful in the pub / restaeraunt. Great for alls lots of footpaths close.

Review 61:Had a lovely couple of nights at the Derby Arms. Just loved everything about it, all the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, the food was great, gorgeous range of beer and big open fires. What more could you need on a short winter break? The room was fab with a roll top bath and comfy bed. Just great!

Review 62:The room was very cosy, the bed was really comfortable and everything was nice and clean. Our evening meal was lovely, there was a good choice of both food and ales. Full english breakfast was excellent. Young, friendly, efficient and polite staff. Free parking and Wi fi A very enjoyable stay thank you! :))

Review 63:What's not to like, it's brilliant.

Review 64:Wonderful open fire. Marvellous bedroom & bathroom Great staff, friendly & efficient Really good evening meal(not part of our deal) Great full English breakfast(included)

Review 65:My boyfriend and I stayed for nye for 1 night. We ate in the restaurant which was delicious and great value. Staff were very attentive and the live singer was greT entertainment. Breakfast was also delicious, although fresh fruit would have been a nice addition! Would definitely return!

Review 66:A little closer to the main road than I'd have liked, but actually once inside the Inn you barely noticed this at all.

Review 67:Lovely room, staff friendly and our evening meal was a delight. The Inn was busy (always a good sign), there were roaring log fires and the food was excellent. I'd recommend this Inn to anyone (and have done so already!)

Review 68:Atmosphere great, cosy And comfortable , great staff, food and beautiful room with comfortable bed! Great night away with friends will definitely be back !

Review 69:Room: spacious clean room with traditional furnitures and very spacious bathroom. We expected some noise and smell from the pub below, but it was quiet and I can smell only in the hall not my room. I stayed in winter so wanted a very warm room. It was so and very welcoming. Food: We had dinner and breakfast here. The taste was more than good, and breakfast was excellent. It was truly full English breakfast. I was satisfied. Others: Some information such as check in/out time, breakfast serving hours etc was printed and placed on the bed. It was useful. Wifi was free and the signal was strong.

Review 70:absolute cleanliness, and the entire interior full of the history and love.My best vacation, after a hard day in front of a lit fireplace, plus live music in the evening. fantastic holiday. Thank you so much.

Review 71:Nothing to dislike

Review 72:Good base for driving around the lakes. Excellent service from a very welcoming staff. Lovely country pub with open fires. Very nice room and comfortable bed. We ate here a couple of times and we were not disappointed. Good breakfast too. We would have no hesitation in recommending the Derby Arms.

Review 73:Soft mattress Room 2 noisy with front door banging heating not working in bedroom large crack/hole in bathroom sink

Review 74:friendly efficient staff tasty breakfast and good quality evening meal

Review 75:Food was good but not spectacular Lack of host or someone who seemed to be in charge. Decor a bit tired in places.

Review 76:Pleasant surroundings. Nice bedroom and bath. Cosy bar. Friendly locals. Nice staff

Review 77:A bit let down as only continental breakfast available. This consisted of a choice of 3 juices/tea /coffee. Very nice bread (self service toasting).Good quality ham/cheese, selection of jams, butter. On last morning the ham had been left uncovered and had flies on it.

Review 78:Very friendly staff, not flustered under pressure. Evening meals good quality and excellent value for money. Good size bedroom with a massive bed very good shower (our preference) All in all very good value.

Review 79:Nothing apart from a little noisey occasionally.

Review 81:Nothing! Really nice!

Review 82:Wonderful pub with lovely room. Staff were polite, helpful and very courteous and went the extra mile. Some amazing walks in surrounding area, check Witherslack Church out !

Review 83:I loved the homely atmosphere of the B&B / pub. It was friendly and well supported by local community. Good value. Perfect location for Windermere. I had not realised I could take my dogs - I will do next time I visit. I would recommend the Derby Arms.

Review 84:The bathroom is fabulous, but the metal wall fittings holding the soap etc are rusty and a bit grotty. Also, apart from a hook on the back of the room door, there was nowhere at all to hang our clothes. Small things but they make a difference and are easily rectified.

Review 85:Our room was spacious with a comfortable king bed and huge bathroom with roll top bath. We enjoyed the "continental" breakfast which is very relaxed and served until 10.30 a.m. We ate in the bar on both nights - the food was great, quite "cheffy" and plenty of it and all the staff were lovely. It was really nice as well that our golden retriever was made as welcome as we were!

Review 86:We believe that there was a temporary problem with the TV satellite dish which restricted the number of channels available.

Review 87:We needed a night stop-over enroute from Oban to Chichester near to a good church. This did the job admirably and was very comfortable and pleasant. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant.

Review 88:what is there not to like?

Review 89:This place is a little gem! it exceeded all expectations, I would definitely consider another stay here! great food, staff, rooms are fab, thank you so much for a lovely stay :-) x
