Reviews for The Melrose
Review 1:No tv signal in room, light above sink in room not working.Split style lightshade meant glaring light, might as well been a bare bulb. Tv covered in dust, remote dirty.Unable to access wifi as no login given at time of check in, no details in room or downstairs. Sash window rattled loudly the whole time it was open along with the door in it's frame so had to keep closed. The bed was uncomfortable. The staff were helpful and nice but the hotel resembles a hostel or council run old folks home and I wish I had paid more and stayed somewhere else.
Review 2:Location,hotel quiet at night.
Review 3:I just found the paintwork on doors and skirting a bit dirty. Generally the rooms look tired
Review 4:Breakfast was brilliant. Overall excellent value. Room was acceptable. Good parking. Good lounge/bar facilities
Review 5:Smoking from other peoples rooms into mine! as a non smoker i found this very unacceptable as all night i was breathing in smoke. Although the staff moved me into a better room more out the way. Which was good.
Review 6:The facilities and the sea front views
Review 7:Unfortunately there was a stale beer smell as you walked in and upstairs on the first floor a smokey smell that left me feeling slightly grubby.
Review 8:Good food and and an excellent seafront location.
Review 9:The hosts were very informative and welcoming and the room was very spacious. Made it more like a friends lounge for the evening when we got back from our day as we were at a funeral in Weely.
Review 10:Always clean, staff always friendly. Breakfast is great always a great choice. Great value for money. We've been coming to the Melrose for the past 6 years and wouldn't stay anywhere else.
Review 11:The whole building was thick with a stale cigarette smell. It was awful and so off putting, our room smelt the same which wasn't nice for us or my 7 year old.
Review 12:The Location was perfect and the breakfast was good as it was included in the price.
Review 13:Came back two nights in a row to no where to park, after speaking with the manager he said park out the front, because of this I got a parking ticket. The manager paid the parking fine which I am very grateful for. There was no wifi on the top floor.
Review 14:Very helpful & cheery staff, great location, good selection for breakfast inc cooked breakfast, great value. Every time we visit Clacton we stay here.
Review 15:Breakfast was only served between 8-9 on a Sunday, which we missed because we overslept.
Review 16:Great location on the sea front. Had a nice sea view! Very friendly staff.
Review 17:John was very accommodating , a lovely set up at the Melrose. It really is value for money and I will definitely stay there again if in the area. Thank you
Review 18:Very quiet hotel, just in front of the sea. Nice breakfast, shared toilet are kept really clean, plenty of tea/coffee in the room, wifi works perfectly. Most of all excellent value for the money.
Review 19:the tables in the breakfast room were too close together.
Review 20:it was a good stay, we enjoyed the room, and breakfast was good too. lovely staff and a great business you have here, i will definitely come back.
Review 21:The fact we were on top floor needs a lift and our door was very sqeekey.
Review 22:We like the location, the staff were friendly the room was clean and the breakfast was one of the best we had tasted.
Review 23:Quality of room, toilet and bath/shower facilities very poor, all rooms had a shared toilet and bathroom. Poor value for money and not recommended.
Review 24:So close to the seafront and town facilities
Review 25:I have a small 4 childrens and all hyper active.they keep running around and shouting. The hotel is made from the wood so everybody can hear the noise to all the hotel. Is no good if you have small childrens because people will complain about the noise
Review 26:Location is very nice and near to the city and pier. The owner was very nice and the breakfast is excellent
Review 27:With open window you can't fall asleep, busy street and people making lots of noise.
Review 28:Great location, close to the beach and bars. Free parking, poor WiFi connection, friendly staff, big room. You don't need more if you planning a weekend away. I would recommend this hotel and would definitely stay there again.
Review 29:Friendly and helpful owners. Good position for getting to other places. Good solid house, so not the usual disturbance of other guests. Perfect for a base to explore further.
Review 30:We booked a double room a day before we arrive. Everything prepared and very clean for this price. Brilliant location and very friendly staff. Very tasty breakfast. Thank you
Review 31:Staff were fantastic breakfast wa lovely the hotel was a little tired looking, but was alright for one night the pillows on the bed were lumpy . The shared toilet and shower was very quiet and quite clean. The beauty of being Abel to take the dog was wonderful and outweighed the lumpy pillows. I would use this hotel again.
Review 32:The furniture in the rooms is quite outdated
Review 33:Beds are very comfortable, staff friendly, breakfast very good, very good location and view from the room ( we had a sea view room)
Review 34:It is what it is, but at £25 a night for my booking, I couldn't really complain.
Review 35:Sea front location and a nice view out to the water. The price was very cheap. John, the owner (?), was very helpful.
Review 36:Had a great stay. Hotel was easy to find and right next to the beach.Very friendly staff, would definitely recommend Melrose Hotel to friends and family.
Review 37:Property and room smelled of cigarette smoke. Getting woken up at 2 in the morning by guests in room 16 bringing back their drunk friends. They were asked to keep noise down by owner they moved outside front garden where they continued to be loud till cab arrived. Thank you Tracy for waking us up.
Review 38:Location near to pier and centre
Review 39:Bathroom in family room was tiny, shower only worked well when steaming hot, when at right temperature it just dribbled so couldn't wash my hair. Would have liked fruit with breakfast.
Review 40:friendly staff - owners let us leave our bags early which was a great help. Love the relaxed bar - reasonably priced drinks with pool and darts and comfy lounge area. Lovely cooked breakfast and fab location.
Review 41:In the process of redecoration, bathrooms shared and basic, no frills at all. Room smelt smokey. Dining room OK but bar area very tatty.
Review 42:Breakfast very nice, staff friendly and welcoming. Very convenient for pier and town centre but beach was closed off when we stayed. Nice views over the sea if room is to the front. Not any noise, very quiet but it was March.
Review 43:A well run B&B with clean rooms, friendly management, sea views, comfortable beds with a smell of stale cigarette smoke and fried breakfast throughout.
Review 44:A bit dirty (shower room and carpet in the room - under the bed had not been cleaned in a while either), a bit cheap (we stayed two nights and the room was cleaned after our first night but the bed sheet that my 3 years old daughter had accidentally soiled was not changed - the dirty sheet was taken away but a clean sheet was not given)
Review 45:Good price, pet-friendly, reasonably big rooms, TV with DVD player, good breakfast (yum!), generally helpful owner/management.
Review 46:Sharing a bathroom, although this never effected the access or cleanliness. Slight stale smoke smell throughout the B&B (maybe I am sensitive to this as a non-smoker)
Review 47:Good breakfast and friendly staff, the facilities were satisfactory and it was generally quiet. Good size bathroom with a lovely shower. I paid £25 per night which was a bargain.
Review 48:Value for money down smells like a dirty old pubsmoking not nice way of the money we paid enough like very poor . Wetherspoons pub is more like a five star hotel. Rob.
Review 49:Food. Was ok.
Review 50:The landlady was a little off because of the breed of our dog Limited breakfast options for vegetarians
Review 51:Pet allowed Kids welcome Clean big rooms Good TV and services (helpful when the little ones are asleep) Landlord/owner was very friendly and helpful Breakfast was nice
Review 52:Shared bathroom, but second toilet very useful. Not great soundproofing between rooms.
Review 53:Lovely sea view from Room 5. Very friendly host and very kindly gave me a discount on single occupancy of a double room. Ample parking, and the owner helpfully moved my car due to vans having to leave early morning. Good full English breakfast.
Review 54:Internet kept dropping out .... Definitely needs upgrading.
Review 55:The owner was very helpful and changed my room on arrival as the first one was very smokey.... Nice stay.
Review 56:we did not like the heater in the autumn period we was witch our little boy and inevening the heater did not switch on we could not take a shower it was too cold

Review 60:I thought the Melrose Hotel was better than I expected, the English breakfast was the best one I've had for many years and it was inclusive, brilliant. Steve.
Review 61:light at night was a bit dim. So it was diffucult for me to read even with glasses But then I am 88,so this could be a personal thing
Review 62:breakfast was excellent, bed very comfortable.
Review 63:I didn't like it when my weekend came to an end !
Review 64:Most enjoyable stay .The hosts are very friendly and pleasant. The atmosphere was great. The location perfect? The actual accommodation...very clean and comfortable. I felt safe there as well. Will I be back. YES. Will I recommend the Melrose YES
Review 65:I was just looking for somewhere to crash overnight having had my booking with another guesthouse cancelled! For £25 it was great - clean, quiet and an excellent breakfast as well - I'd stay again no problem!
Review 66:Melrose is a small, friendly hotel facing the sea. With very helpful and welcoming staff, it is a good choice including for families with children and for those who wish to experience local food and enjoy walking on the seashore.
Review 67:In bedroom basin, the overspill drainage hole needed cleaning with bleach. The shower cubicle needs a grab bar. A pair of men's pyjama trousers was left hanging in the bathroom above the bench.
Review 68:Overlooking the sea. Pleasant dining area. Enjoyable breakfast. Good window that excluded all noise at night. Friendly hosts. Enough storage space. Roomy shower. Near High Street and Sainsbury's.
Review 69:Quilt too small for bed, television needs to be put on wall for more table space, all sockets need to be made live not just 2 that we had to make do with
Review 70:The hosts were great
Review 71:Maybe they should mention they have a dog as I am allergic to animals it was a bit uncomfortable for me wandering why my eyes where itchy then coming out my room to find a dog running roun but other then that we had a very pleasant stay
Review 72:Noise of other guests banging doors and constantly hearing taps on and off between 4.30-6.30am... No fault of the hotel though!!
Review 73:Fantastic stay, lovely room, lovely breakfast couldn't fault any of it!!
Review 74:Having to share a bathroom with other guests.Smelt of cigarette smoke and staleness. Hotel owner walking around drinking lager out of a can in front of guests at 5 o'clock in the afternoon.
Review 75:Good location only a 2 minute walk from the pier.
Review 76:Nothing
Review 77:We stayed in a family room for bank holiday weekend, we couldn't have felt more welcome. The rooms were clean the breakfast was delicious they made sure you had plenty to eat, all the staff was very friendly and helpful, and the best part was we was able to bring our beloved dog with us so we could have a proper family holiday. Will defiantly be going back there. The Thomas family

Review 82:we loved every thing about are stay staff pleasent, friendley. nothing was to much for John. Charlie was a pleasure to take for a walk . we will be back next year for my 50th in feb (michelle )
Review 83:Place quite 70s needs bit of updating, shower curtain dirty, and not walk in with two steps up to it so we used bathroom across landing which was good. I like the retro look but could do with some modernization for disabled guests.
Review 84:Staff very obliging, put travel cot in our room for my reborn baby. Carried our cases up and down. Very friendly, gave it the personal touch which I value a lot. Room bit cramped but we managed, plenty of storage. Food very good, breakfast cooked to order, good variety of yoghurts and cereals. Plenty of toast tea and coffee. Owner very obliging got us cream in for our tia Maria. They didn't make any negative comments about my reborn. Which I liked. Would go there again as I like the staff attitude and homely feeling the place gave.

Bank holiday but this time we decided to go when it would be quieter in town, the beach and inside the hotel, it was all of that and we enjoyed our stay, it is for us like going home from home, the owner John and his staff are very friendly,we always get the room we ask for and we look forward to another visit when we feel the need for a break
