Reviews for The Boar's Head
Review 1:We were given a very dated room, it was our anniversary and my wife was very disappointed, I had mentioned this on my booking but no attention was given to this not that we expected any special treatment but a small gesture would have been nice
Review 2:10.00check out time is a bit too early. 11 would be an improvement Evening menu not to our taste, bar meal was poor, desert even more so.
Review 3:Keepers cottages decorated and furnished to a high standard. Breakfasts were excellent. Tasty, well presented and filling.
Review 4:The room was very tired and not very comfortable. I paid for a superior double, but on reflection don't think we got one! There was no trouser press, bathrobes CD player, as advertised. Had we been staying for more than one night I would have queried this with the hotel management.
Review 5:The location and atmosphere in the public areas were very good.
Review 6:Nothing bad to report. Such a pity the Castle was closed.
Review 7:This is the most pet friendly village, let alone hotel or room. During the busiest time of year, staff were exemplary. Our room was perfectly situated. We enjoyed the paintings in reception rooms, and eggs benedict were splendid.
Review 8:Room was slightly cold
Review 9:For £39 a night with breakfast, was unbelieveable value. Dinner was excellent and very high quality sea bass for £14. Amazing hotel and restaurant.
Review 10:Gorgeous breakfast wasn't big enough lol... :-)
Review 11:Staff were so friendly and helpful, can't say I've ever been treated better anywhere - thank you
Review 12:BREAKFAST VERY POOR FOR HOTEL. CUT UP APPLE FOR BREAKFAST IS NOT FRUIT SALAD THEY CANT MAKE TAKE OUT FOOD VERY WELL. I WAS ONLY SERVED HOT FRESH CROISSANTS ONCE IN 4 DAYS
Review 13:The car parking was poor. If you were not in early you had no chance of a space. The room had a few issues. We were not advised that we would be staying in a building which was not part of the hotel (had an external shared entrance with other rooms). When in the room the noise of people coming and going was loud. It was like you were in the same room as you heard every word. At 2 AM on Saturday morning it wasn't acceptable (not the other customers fault as they had paid for a room like we did). The noise of people going up and down the stairs outside the room and above the room was loud enough to count the stairs stepped on. The double bed mattress over hung the bed base.
Review 14:Staff and food were great. First class. Location to Harrogate was good.
Review 15:The only thing I feel was the bed was a little hard for my wife. she suffers from backache, But I know the beds were new.
Review 16:The hotel was lovely good room with the finishing touches of ribon around bath mat, choclate on pillows, Harogate water bottle and tea and coffee in rooms.
Review 17:Put my leather boots out to e cleaned but no one did them. Staff too busy in the morning to find me some polish do I could do them myself.
Review 18:Very clean. Very helpful staff. Very enjoyable stay. Would go again.
Review 19:The rooms were well appointed. The food was well presented and delicious, we had the cheese platter which was served at room temperature for a change. The staff were very polite and helpful.
Review 20:Couldnt get any sandwiches when we arrived later than planned because stuck in traffic and very hungry. Biscuits were good though!
Review 21:Friendly, warm, clean, cosy, excellent food.
Review 22:The resturant the staff were excellent The evening meal the meat was also excellent But all of the vegtables were bland or dry The beakfast the first day again was excellent But on the second day the English breakfast was unedible
Review 23:Everything was good with the acception of the Resturant
Review 24:We could only stay one night! HA HA
Review 25:The village is a delight to waik through. the rooms are beatufully decorated and well furnished they are very cosy, the little boar choclate on the pillow was sweet. The pub resturaunt was welcoming and good value It is our second stay we will be back again soon.
Review 26:No much really but if we were to be picky then we did feel that the bathroom tiles could do with some updating.
Review 27:We loved the historic setting of the hotel and the staff were more than helpful. There was a homely feeling and a perfect base for sightseeing especially the nearby castle to which you were given discounted tickets. We really liked the relaxed atmosphere and enjoyed playing card games in the lounge.
Review 28:Stayed at the Boar's Head 5 or 6 times in the last couple of years , and never had a bad experience , we love it there .
Review 29:The setting , the staff , the lovely breakfasts , we think everything is ' spot-on ' .
Review 30:Absolutely charming. Loved the little touches like chocolates on the pillows. Excellent breakfast and added bonus of free entry to Ripley Castle gardens.
Review 31:Foyer carpet and décor was worn and tired.
Review 32:Excellent service from polite staff. En-suite bedroom was marvellous. Being able to take our dog in public rooms.
Review 33:We went down for breakfast at ten past nine and the restaurant was full , we had to wait ten minutes for a table which we did not mind , but unfortunately when we got in the restaurant all the pastries and yogurt had gone , which was disappointing .
Review 34:Nice cosy and comfortable room , lovely welcome from lady at reception. We ate at the bar and the food was tasty , and the service from George the waiter was excellent . The breakfast in the morning was also very nice . The free tickets to grounds of Ripley castle were an unexpected but appreciated surprise .
Review 35:Food service slow in the bar restaurant, and meal was only 5/10, we'd say. Sadly, after chasing, the order was still not complete (water never arrived!). Some technical problems with computer/broadband delayed our leaving. With a little care, this could be a 5* review. We just felt the details were not properly attended to...!
Review 36:Helpful staff. Wonderful breakfast. Comfy warm room.
Review 37:Nothing
Review 38:Lovely location . Good sized rooms nice tea tray with quality biscuits and Choice of coffee the chocolate 'boar' was a nice touch. The breakfast was excellent as was the evening meal. The staff were friendly and obliging. A good bus service from outside the hotel which was an added bonus so we left car in hotel car park and used the bus to and from Harrogate!
Review 39:Our room was right beside the gent's toilet (upstairs) used by restaurant users.
Review 40:Room very comfortable. Staff very professional and well trained. Restaurant choices and food very good.
Review 41:We were warmly greeted at reception and given an upgrade to a Superior Double which set the standard for our overnight stay. Staff were friendly and courteous in all departments and food was excellent. Decor a little faded in places but very comfortable and well equipped room. Chocolate box lid village and free access to Ripley Castle grounds a bonus.
Review 42:A bit of noise in our upstairs "Coachman's" accommodation from smokers in the courtyard outside the bar below. Food was generally good but the venison was a little tough and dry.
Review 43:A lovely hotel in a traditional Yorkshire village with excellent accommodation. The staff were very friendly and efficient. A great ambiance.
Review 44:Paintwork required touching up in places but certainly didn't mar the overall appeal of the hotel.
Review 45:Whilst we had a very good deal with booking.com the normal tariff would have been excellent value. Lovely touches like the chocolate boar on the pillow, bottled water and an old fashion style radio in room. Food was excellent and presented very nicely.
Review 46:10.30 am check out a bit early if you want to chill.
Review 47:Peaceful, comfortable and has character. Very good pricing through booking.com that was not available direct.
Review 48:Smaller lamp/lampshade on table next to mirror would make hairdressing and makeup easier. Tv in awkward position for access to wardrobe. Also looks unsightly and out of place where situated.
Review 49:Clean, bright and mostly comfortable room. Lovely, old coaching inn. Staff pleasant, efficient and accomodating. Breakfast and evening meal good. Free tickets to Ripley Castle grounds.
Review 50:Not a big issue but like so many hotels now, the free WiFi was non-existent in most locations within the hotel. Not normally a major problem, but it was our honeymoon and the mobile phone signal was non-existent too (not your fault) so the WiFi was our only chance to send and receive messages.
Review 51:Comfortable room. Nice selection of real ales and gins.
Review 52:The staff were all lovely, the accomodation fantastic. Food in the restaurant very good and drinks not too expensive. An excellent weekend break. Thank you
Review 53:Just a comment. They forgot to charge me for our evening meal and drinks. I pointed it out and they corrected our bill but it would have been nice to say Thank You for pointing out our error and thank you for your honesty but not a word. Just corrected the bill. A pity because everything else had been 1st class
Review 54:Good food in the restaurant and very good breakfast
Review 55:Not a Thing.
Review 56:Staff really pleasant.Food very good.Room in garden really nice, clean, bed a great size.tea and coffee making facilities good.chocolate boars on pillows a nice touch.Hotel position ideal for touring area. Will return.
Review 57:Far from a bad experience - more an observation that room a 'little' tired with mould in grouting and shower curtain associated with a 'damp' aroma'. Having two single mattresses masquerading as a double bed - creating a 'ridge' between the two. No Theakston's OP as a cask ale - sorely missed on this visit!
Review 58:Location. Efficiency of staff and their attentive approach. Although not accompanied by a pet - to observe such a pet friendly accommodation. Menu - Quality / presentation of food. Lovely touch of chocolate 'boris' still very much appreciated. Thank you
Review 59:Not a negative as such but I rated the hotel good value based on the deal we managed to get but would have considered it expensive had we paid full price.
Review 60:The Inn itself is lovely with a decent menu and good beers. The staff were friendly and the games made available in the bar area were a nice touch (especially for big kids!). All made for a lovely little trip ideal for a night or two away form home. The free ticket to Ripley castle was a bonus too.
Review 61:The hotel only offers 1 menu, we booked for the main restaurant on the evening and it was the same bar menu we looked at on the afternoon, slightly disappointing when eating there for lunch and dinner.
Review 62:We stayed in the 'white' room, it was a great size, nice and airy, decor a bit dated but is in keep with the hotel and surroundings. Chocolate on pillows, bottled water and robes where a great touch. Room was well equipped. The hotel also gives you free entry into ripley castle gardens and tours of castle for only £4! Ripley village itself is a beautiful little village and would recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing little trip away.
Review 63:We stopped in a room in the court yard. Room looked a bit tired. We were allocated a room with only a bath. We prefer a shower. During our evening meal, breakfast and lunch in the café the following day we were pestered with flys around our food which was off putting.
Review 64:Hotel in a nice location. Visit to Ripley castle very enjoyable. Nice tour round house and nice walks round gardens and lake. Good café with good choice of meals. Harrogate and Ripon both close by to visit.
Review 65:Unable to book dining room for evening meal. Had meal in bar spoilt by noisy customers at crowded bar. Paid £16 for steak which was very tough. Complained and in formed by staff they would tell the butcher!,,
Review 66:Location was quite good
Review 67:None at all.
Review 68:It didn't disappoint at all. Everything was better than we anticipated. The food was particularly impressive especially the breakfast choices.
Review 69:Beautiful location, friendly and helpful staff and lovely buildings. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this delightful hotel. It really is a special place!
Review 70:mattress and pillows very hard, most uncomfortable night, only stayed 1 night or would have asked if they had soft mattress topper or different pillows.
Review 71:Limited menu in main dining room, exactly the same as bar area so wondering what the attraction of the dining room is. As there appears to be no other dining alternative in the village wonder if there is a touch of complacency about this aspect of the service offered. By contrast the breakfast offering was first class.
Review 72:Peaceful location and welcoming staff
Review 73:Piped Radio 2 blaring out at in the Breakfast dining room - though the staff turned it down when requested.
Review 74:The room was very well appointed and comfortable. The dinner and breakfast were excellent. The staff were competent, knowledgeable and attentive.
Review 75:The attention to detail, all the staff were very helpful and attentive, they seemed not just helpful but genuinely concerned to ensure that my stay was comfortable and enjoyable. Top marks to all concerned !
Review 76:Usually when you visit hotels the wifi conncection is invariable quite poor. Considering the location of the site I was amazed at home strong the signal was. Additionally, the general location so close to the castle is fantastic and having spoken with several local people from withing the village who were all really friendly I would strongly recommend a visit here to anyone!
Review 77:Although not a very warm night, the room was too hot for me and for my wife. We had the bedroom and bathroom windows open and slept intermittently on top of the covers
Review 78:There for a family wedding held at Ripley castle. Great location and characterful hotel.
Review 79:Had bad nights sleep because of people in room above us walking around lumping on floor and also a dog howling most of time.
Review 80:Location good .nice hotel .very friendly staff excellent breakfast.
Review 81:The noise of movement of upstairs residents was quite loud but it was not their fault. Some additional soundproofing would be advisable. We were in Keepers 1.
Review 82:Had to a meal back on the secpnd night. It was replaced no problem.
Review 83:Advertised as a small double but it was much larger than many we have stayed at. Great room.
Review 84:This is a really great place to stay. Nice range of real ales, generally good food in the bar ( we did not try the restaurant), nice rooms, good breakfast etc etc. We have stayed twice now and would certainly return if in the area.
Review 85:a little noisy as we had a drinking area right under our window, when booking in felt more of a nuisance than a welcome guest.
Review 86:really liked the location, the free passes to the castle grounds were a bonus as they were beautiful, superb breakfast
Review 87:Our room had a very busy bus stop just outside our window. Restaurant staff were inattentive. We waited nearly an hour between two courses and my husband's steak was not cooked as requested, even when sent back.
Review 88:Spacious and beautifully decorated room. Receptionist friendly and informative. Made us very welcome.
Review 89:We liked the little village which was part of the castle and accommodation..it was very quaint ..We liked been able to visit the Castle Grounds and Gardens..complimentary to our stay at The Boars Head..The staff are a credit to these establishments from our Accommodation..Gift Shop..Castle Cafe and Castle Grounds..The location and scenery is breathtaking .
Review 90:Room was very quiet and hotel is in a wonderful location. As a solo female traveler it felt welcoming and safe. Staff helpful and friendly and Beau my dog was made to feel very welcome too.
Review 91:One tiny issue for mobile device users, some areas struggle with reception. Wi-Fi available but we found connection was intermittent .
Review 92:Fantastic location for motorway links and surrounding areas but still a quaint little village feel with flowers in bloom everywhere but with all the amenities that you could need. Guests can also enjoy a complimentary look around the castle gardens.
Review 93:Breakfast and evening meals very good but thought sandwiches over priced for quantity and content. Shower facility in room disappointing.
Review 94:Picturesque strolls in castle grounds and surrounding countryside.
Review 95:In most parts of the hotel the wifi was very good but in the Cathedral room it was too weak to work.
Review 96:The food and surroundings were outstanding, the staff were very friendly and helpful and we were made to feel very welcome.
Review 97:We have a lovely comfortable stay for my wife's birthday. Excellent value for money and we would certainly recommend the boars head and will come again.
Review 98:Bed very uncomfortable, food average but very expensive £15 for a burger and a few frozen chips also the coke was flat and watery. The waiter did change it for me .
Review 99:Would not stay again obviously the price is cheap so I suppose you get what you pay for !!!!!
Review 100:Housed in a property over the road to main hotel without being previously informed. Disappointing bar and restaurant food. Decor tired throughout. Did not live up to its reputation
Review 101:Lovely village, nice bear garden
Review 102:Just the limited menu available, such a shame for a beautiful hotel.
Review 103:The courtyard area was delightful, along with the friendly staff and quirky decor, a mix of modern and old.
Review 104:When we arrived to book in, the receptionist took an outside call and booked dinner for two. Then when we asked about dinner she advised she had just taken the last booking. Although the literature apparently does advise the restaurant is very busy and to be sure book early we did think we woukd be safe midweek and would have expected the recptionist to give preference to paying guests. The receptionist was apologetic and offered the Bistro but frankly the Bistro was one of the most unattractive eating areas I have seen for some time. On leaving the staff did apologise again and we had a discussion about thendecor of the Bistro and the Dining Room which I woukd suggest both need an early revamp.
Review 105:Sizable and comfortable bedroom with good quality hairdryer and bathrobes
Review 106:Restaurant lacks atmosphere and poor food quality. Fine dining presentation but poor quality components. Rib eye steak inedible, unable to cut, all sinew and tasteless fish as the starter. Had to wait 20minutes for breakfast.
Review 107:Location
Review 108:Only bad thing would be that the service was a little slow for breakfast.
Review 109:I like the way things look and this hotel really impressed me. From the numerous drawing rooms when you walked in to the uniquely designed rooms that have been made from the old coach house. There was even a chocolate board on the bed. me and my other half had a small double room which was plenty big enough for what we needed. The toiletries were a nice touch and there was a good selection of Yorkshire teas and coffees. It was raining so no one was in the beer garden but i would say that if its a summer's evening then there might be a bit of noise near by till late so you may not want rooms in this area. Although we didn't look around, the village looked very quaint and interesting to look around, with the castle near by. Harrogate is not to far away so went went there but in hindsight I would probably have preferred the former. Easy to find and reachable from fountain's abbey (another recommendation). The breakfast was plentiful and provided gluten free bread which always makes me happy! Would definitely recommend!
Review 110:Not bad but the starter from the the main menu was miniscule.
Review 111:The Estate, castle and grounds were excellent. The Hotel was integral to the estate and did not disappoint.
Review 112:Nothing was too much trouble, the staff were some of the most friendly that I have encountered and I travelled on business for years. Vanya was particularly helpful to me on booking in.
Review 113:The “superior room” was looking tired and was ready for refurbishment, the carpet and lino especially. Additionally it could do with a through dust. Even taking into account the location, it felt over priced.
Review 114:The location was very good. The common areas were nicely and tastefully decorated.
Review 115:The shower was poor strength and temperature. Our room was small and dark compared to our friends. It needed a main light to ligt the room up.
Review 116:The breakfast was good, the hospitally tray was good and the stafff were fantastic! The setting was lovely.
Review 117:Why does a quality hotel have naff local radio presenters interspersed with adverts and musick when you enjoying a breakfast Shame because everything else was excellent
Review 118:Small privately owned hotel . Excellent value for money
Review 119:The room we were given had workers replacing a bath, tiles, plumbing etc with lots of hammering going on all day in the room oppersite, not good when you are trying to relax after a 6 hr drive but when we complained we were given another room (navy) which was fine, but we did notice the window frames were rotten at the bottom and wondered why this had not been attended to ?
Review 120:The food was great but we felt the menu was smaller from the last time we were there, (three years ago) The room was clean and comfortable and the service was good with pleasent staff
Review 121:Honest feedback would be that the breakfast room and staff are a little tired! Sorry but they were not as attentive as the other staff I met. Whilst the food is pleasant and tasty, it took a long time to serve and toast was in short supply. The buffet was small and limited and the fruit juices (out of a carton) were not chilled. Sadly I saw the cartons being opened in the kitchen!!! Honest feedback from a well travelled hotel guest. I do not mind paying for excellence, but if I'm paying I expect excellence....... The bar and food prices are at the top end (£50 for an excellent Amorone) and therefore I would willingly stay again and will but I've given an evidenced account.
Review 122:The reception staff, bar staff and waiting staff are very well trained, helpful, approachable and very service orientated. The rooms are comfortable, well furnished and provide a high standard of accommodation. The bar food is excellent if not a little over priced
Review 123:The room decor was a little tired as was the bathroom-with no shower. There was no internet connection in the room just in reception rooms
Review 124:Great breakfast, attentive staff, clean room, great for a couple of nights
Review 125:We really appreciated the personal touch Gayle provided at the reception. We were showed to our rooms and give all the pertinent information so graciously. We would definitely recommend reservations for the restaurant prior to arrival.
Review 126:Unable to eat at the hotel. No where nearby to eat either so had to drive back into Harrogate! We were celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary so were very disappointed. We have travelled world wide but have never even unable to eat in a hotel before. Hence hotel and not bed and breakfast!!
Review 127:Fairly nice surroundings, but only place to eat without driving was the hotel
Review 128:2 single beds pushed together to create a double was a little uncomfyin the middle of the night... Not too much of an issue for myself, butmy partner didn't have the best night's sleep. There was alsoa little staining on the fabric headboard which might need to bereplaced soon?
Review 129:Always love it when a hotel exceeds expectations and the beautifulBoar's Head did just that... From our approach by car to theVirginia Creeper-covered building that overwhelms the pretty marketsquare of Ripley, to the warm welcome & lavish décor &furnishings inside this gorgeous Georgian house. We were greeted byClara on Reception who gave a super-friendly & fuss-free check-inwith plenty of information to help us find our way around the hotel. Wechose The Boar's Head because of its proximity to the nearby hot airballoon take-off site at Pateley Bridge, just by the grounds of RipleyCastle, and were thus expecting a very early start the followingmorning... This might have been awkward for any other hotel to providebreakfast but Clara immediately offered us tea/coffee/toast inbed at 4.00am to accommodate us; in fact, we found out before bedtimethat our flight wasn't due to depart until 8.00am so the earlybreakfast wasn't required, however, the offer was still very muchappreciated. We were put up in the Yellow Room, comfortable & withluxurious curtains & smooth sash windows (we opened these straightaway as we found the hotel very warm). Our room was certainly big enoughfor both of us with a well-equipped bathroom & tv &tea/coffee refreshments as standard. The room decoration here is alittle dated (a bit "Laura Ashley" we thought), but this ispurely subjective & only pointed out in case you're expecting aboutiquey experience which The Boar's Head is not; insteadyou'll find a very classic, Georgian taste throughout & this isvery much in-keeping with the style of this beautiful old coaching inn.Must give a huge thumbs up to the Restaurant & Bar...
Review 130:ask for a sandwich but was told not until after 6 - then saw other eating. As a lone traveller I was working in the garden area on lap top for several hours an no staff came to see if refreshments were needed and to go to the bar would have meant shutting down lap top and carrying it inside - a tad unthoughtful I thought. I had to ask for the room to be recleaned.
Review 131:location was good and staff too.
Review 132:My only real grouse was that the restaurant was too small to accommodate both guests and local diners. This is obviously a popular local restaurant. It might be a good idea to suggest to people booking the hotel that they should reserve a table for their evening meal. Arriving late afternoon/early evening could mean that no tables are available. Given that there is nowhere else to eat in the immediate area, that could prove to be frustrating for anyone who's just had a long journey.
Review 133:This was a very pleasant place to stay. It was clean and comfortable and set in an ideal location with the moors and lovely local cities within a very short distance. A great bus service right outside the hotel was a huge plus! Breakfast was very good as was the a la carte menu in the evening. Pleasing to see that some of the food on offer sourced directly from the castle estate. Our room was fine. The free wi-fi in all areas was very welcome.
The Fine Print
Please note that hotel guests cannot be guaranteed a table for dinner at the hotel's restaurant, reservations are recommended.
