Reviews for Broughton Craggs Hotel

Review 1:The beautiful location, staff were very friendly and helpful. Really good breakfast, very clean and tidy just a little dated. I would recommend this for anyone.

Review 2:No Complaints at all, we stayed in a Best Western hotel the night .before and whilst it was modern and in perfect condition with well trained staff it was completely sole less compared to this place.

Review 3:An old building which is a little tired in places but one would expect that. the rooms are large and ours had new good quality furniture, no complaints about the bed. This hotel has fabulous views both from the bedroom and the lounge areas. Staff are nice and helpful a warm and friendly stay in one of Cumbria's wettest weekends.

Review 4:Nothing.

Review 5:Lovely feel about the hotel, all staff were friendly and we were made to feel welcome from the start. Dan needs a special mention for his attention to detail, friendliness and superb management skills.

Review 6:Little bit of trouble figuring out how the shower worked. It would be nice if hotels had standardised showers. Otherwise everything perfect.

Review 7:Helpful friendly staff. Well tended fire in the bar. Good food moderately priced. We travel regularly on business to Cockermouth and we will definitely stay here again.

Review 8:I travelled to the hotel at night and finding the hotel was difficult as there were no lights and it was hard to see any street signs. Then for evening meal I ordered lasagne and it was served on a very cold plate and the lasagne was only luke warm. When I asked for it to be hotter I was told it had tested right temperature with a probe, however when a customer advises it is not hot enough I would have expected it to be taken without question and heated. When it was returned the plate was red hot and the lasagne was the same luke warm temperature. Having said all of this I would stay again if I was in the area.

Review 9:This hotel has much potential. The room was big and spacious and the views spectacular. The breakfast was very good and the price was very competitive.

Review 10:Dinner - poor, very poor. Cold food, small portions and lack lustre service. Not up to the standard of previous visits. Still I'll give you another chance as everything else is excellent including breakfast

Review 11:Almost everything - except dinner on this occation for some reason

Review 12:The location was absolutley beautiful - very secluded and just right for a break in a hectic travel itinerary. The staff from management to the wait staff were great - enthusiastic and happy to help. Breakfast was excellent.

Review 13:Decor looked tired and carpets need updating as seen a lot off traffic over the years. Evening meal served on cold plates.

Review 14:Location good with warm comfortable beds.

Review 15:Only saw one staff member who seemed to do everything. Decore very tired and room, in particular the bathroom not as clean as it might have ben.

Review 16:Nice old building

Review 17:3pm check in. The room was quite cold so the spare blanket was needed. Everything was clean except dust around TV area.

Review 18:Beautiful grounds. Nice bar and lounge areas. Ok wifi. Excellent barman. Large breakfast. Booked here as it was dog friendly, unfortunately I didn't see that my room wasn't but at least I could still take my dog into the lounge and bar so it wasn't a problem for one night.

Review 19:I thought the overall appearance of the room was out dated and needed a make over The Bathroom certainly needed a renovation the bath had a large chip in it Although the staff was wonderful the room was slightly jaded

Review 20:Loved the view and the location

Review 21:We were not happy that we were put up in a room which was like an attic room with very thin walls where we could hear the people next door. The e nsuite was obviously a last minute thought and was not really ideal. We would have asked to change had we been staying longer.

Review 22:The Hotel was really nice with nice grounds to sit out in. The owner was very helpful and friendly

Review 23:Bathroom for our double room was a little dark and tooth mugs and a shelf would have been helpful in there.

Review 24:The hotel had lovely character and beautiful grounds, food was excellent and staff were helpful and friendly.

Review 25:Our room wasn't clean .. Dog hairs on the cover around the base of the bed , were not saying a few there were loads.. Somebody's socks left in the drawers which we just binned and rubbish left in the cupboard at the side of the bed. The room lacked dusting and the mirror in our room lacked polish. Over all the room need a proper good Hoover and dusting.

Review 26:Fantastic breakfast, nice bar and friendly staff

Review 27:We were welcomed and shown to our room by Paul who was very friendly and who we found out used to live near our home. The bedroom had a very comfortable bed and the views out of the window were stunning. Every member of staff we met were friendly and this same friendliness continued in the restaurant where we enjoyed a lovely meal at a very reasonable price. We have been visiting the lake district for around 30 years and have to say never have we had such scenic views at a price people can actually afford. A little gem in lovely surroundings, homely and very clean. Will we return?Yes definitely, hopefully later in the year.

Review 28:staff communication wasn't very good. Didn't explain had to order drinks at the bar and can't order them in the restaurant. Also having to sit in bar and wait with the menu seemed a bit odd rather than sitting at our table in the restaurant especially as the bar was full with a wedding party so we felt like we were intruding the wedding. Ceiling paper coming off at 2 different points in the suite and cracked tiles in the bathroom.

Review 29:4 poster bed very comfy Lovely grounds and outside of hotel

Review 30:The mattress in Room 12 dipped at one side which led to an awful night's sleep. Having mentioned this at check out, the staff response was that they were surprised and would look into it. There was no apology or offer of a reduced rate. We were made to feel like trouble makers. I've never complained at a hotel before and I never will again as this experience was absolutely excruciatingly embarrassing. To their credit, the staff member did eventually take ten pounds off our bill, however we were told they would still 'get charged full commission' from booking.com and so to say this was grudging is an understatement.

Review 31:The hotel is set in beautiful gardens.

Review 32:My wife and I enjoyed a short break in the lakes and to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We chose the hotel as it was central to our needs of places to visit. What a wonderful choice it turned out to be. The hotel was a splendid old building and furnished in a most comfortable manner. The food was superb and with an excellent choice and the staff went out of their way to make you feel at home. But the icing on the cake for us was the peace and quiet and not a sound at night. No Motorway noise, no trains and no jets. We will definitely be back for more peace, or should that be another piece? F W. and B. H.

Review 33:Food - poor Staff - minimum effort bathroom - very poor standard of finish - very poor Wifi - terrible signal

Review 34:the location is fantastic and with a lick of paint and some attentive staff could be an incredible hotel.

Review 35:Room was old and dated, flooring in bathroom raised up from floor. Mold in shower cubicle. Odour outside room. Evening meal of mixed grill was very over cooked.

Review 36:Staff friendly, relaxed and informative about the local area. Breakfast was really good. Sitting rooms downstairs very comfortable.

Review 37:I would have preferred to be a little closer to Keswick, but that's a personal thing. Can hardly blame the hotel for its location. (It's about 17 miles away)

Review 38:The hotel building is lovely, as are the grounds, and the room was very spacious. Classic in style, but not outdated. We found the staff very welcoming and helpful.

Review 39:No light over the sink. Room not made up during the day. Shortage of croissants for breakfast. On the menu but never available

Review 40:Good location and great views when the weather cleared Reasonable cost

Review 41:Location is extremely quiet. View was beautiful. Very friendly staff. Made to feel welcome and at home. Extremely comfortable beds. Darn good breakfast!

Review 42:Our room was a little 'tired' maybe time for a wee refurb and a white bathroom suite instead of the advacado would make the world of difference.

Review 43:Very friendly and helpful staff and a lovely breakfast

Review 44:Not much of a cheerful welcome! We had to ring the number of the hotel from our mobile phone to get attention! Dinner was poor, the beautifully homemade steak pie was heated in the microwave thus the pastry was soggy and uneatable. The steak was delicious. The Doom Bar ale was stale and flat.

Review 45:The views were beautiful, the house has seen better days.

Review 46:Waiting 10 mins to check in after traveling 3 hours in the pouring rain. 11 o clock check would be better.

Review 47:Only saw 1 member of staff. Who was pleasant. Short car ride to town centre, unfortunately no bus services. Breakfast was gorgeous, would defo recommend having breakfast.

Review 48:parts of hotel needed modernised I.e. bathrooms and plumbing which appeared poor throughout. Found it very hard to flush

Review 49:Beauitiful setting and nice period features with extensive grounds

Review 50:No toilet paper. Terrible anxiety when realisation. Cupboard soft close hinge broken stuck in my head. Found chocolate cake down side of bed. Tiles hanging off bathroom wall.

Review 51:Location

Review 52:Because we had a dog with us we were banished to a dingy, shabby room at the back of the hotel, reached through a maze of corridors and fire doors- not good for dog-walking. Huge damp patch and peeling paint on the wall.

Review 53:Nothing too serious but my room's windows wouldn't open and it could have done with some redecoration.

Review 54:The grounds are well kept and very attractive and the restaurant has a great view (it faces South) and lots of peacocks roam about.

Review 55:a box of tissues would have been nice. Also couldn't get wifi but was too tired to care. Fresh coffee not from a machine would have taken breakfast up a notch.

Review 56:Location and views, furniture, staff, cleanliness.

Review 57:From the moment we walked through the door we felt very welcome Staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble. Definitely going back. Thanks for a lovely relaxing stay Broughton craggs.

Review 58:The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The food was good 'pub grub' style, cooked perfectly, presented beautifully, served on time, and there was lots of it.

Review 59:Demotivated receptionist, poorly furnished and decorated, tv song lighting didn't work , food was below expected standard.we would have been happier with smaller portions and better quality.

Review 60:The view, buildind and garden

Review 61:We had minor issues with the wifi either not working or dropping out on us.

Review 62:A beautiful house in a stunning location. Comfortable, luxurious and well worth the money.

Review 63:The room I stayed in was a bit tired and in need of a lick of paint, but nothing too bad.

Review 64:A lovely location with beautiful gardens & great views. The lounges were very comfortable and also good staff friendly as well a super breakfast.

Review 65:Nothing. We were very happy

Review 66:We only stayed for a short time. We had drinks in the bar in the evening and breakfast in the morning. We found staff helpful and friendly. We thought our stay was good value for money

Review 67:The quiet, beautiful location. The style of the house. How we were able to check in early. Real ale at the bar and sensible drinks prices. The snug feeling we had when it was raining in torrents outside.

Review 68:Some of the facilities didn't work. Shower room mirror light and extractor fan didn't work. Some degree of mould showing on the sealant. Bed was a little soft.

Review 69:Staff were very helpful, it was a warm hotel. The room had all that was needed, food very good, a quiet place to stay.

Review 70:we felt a bit cold in our rooM during the night.

Review 71:We like the location as it was very quiet. The hotel staff was nice and friendly. Also full English breakfast very delicious. We would definitely stay there again.

Review 72:Rooms were cold poor quality of steak at dinner breakfast spoilt by finding large hair in it!! Reception staff not good customer service didn't apologise for hair in breakfast just dismissed it. Would not go back to this hotel

Review 73:Room (and bathroom in particular) were very cold, there is a radiator in the bedroom but not in the bathroom which is really needed in Cumbria in February!

Review 74:Excellent food, lovely location, comfortable lounge and bar.

Review 75:Shower was erratic and poor water pressure, bathroom seemed unfinished.

Review 76:Good food. Helpful staff. Lovely location, yet ideal for Workington, Cockermouth,, Whitehaven if travelling on business.

Review 77:I had to get up early for work reasons and the water was only just starting to heat up.

Review 78:The staff were friendly and efficient and happy to adapt to the customer's needs. Great breakfast. Peaceful location , even with a gale force wind blowing outside Willing to serve breakfast early as I needed to leave by 07:45

Review 79:When asked for a drink at 9:45 pm told by barman he was closing bar so took drinks to room no atmosphere in bar and reluctant attitude pity it spoiled stay

Review 80:Liked the quaintness grounds and birds nicely decorated food at breakfast was well presented good value

Review 81:In Room 8 I would have preferred a bedside lamp for convenience if one had to get up in the night, rather than locate a switch on the wall behind the bedhead to light wall lights

Review 82:General atmosphere was good and the Staff very accommodating.

Review 83:Nothing, it was all good.

Review 84:Friendly, helpful staff from the moment we arrived right through to check out. Lovely hotel in good location. We were lucky enough to get a fantastic deal on the four-poster room, with stunning views over the river and valley. Good sized room, clean, quiet and very comfortable. The hotel has two relaxing lounges, a bar and a restaurant. I would urge those staying at the hotel - or anyone looking for somewhere to eat in area - to try the food. Absolutely excellent, both in quality and quantity - the mega mixed grill could easily feed two. I can't comment on dessert as we were too stuffed to even try some. This restaurant should be heaving year round, thanks to the variety of options on offer and the reasonable prices. I fear it is underselling itself. The menu in our room suggested typical fare for a traditional restaurant, okay but no fanfare. The menu in the restaurant has more options, but it's only when the mains arrive do you realise just how good value they are. And delicious. Irked when restaurants promise 'home made chips' only to be let down? Not here. Proper light, crispy chips. I cannot emphasise how good they were! All round, a warm, friendly hotel that ticked all the boxes, and then some. Hope it's not too long till we can go back.

Review 85:My room was freezing cold, despite the radiator being on all night. There wasnt any hot water for a shower in the morning and the wi-fi was very slow.

Review 86:Nice location, good breakfast

Review 87:Nothing

Review 88:Stayed in a room with a fantastic view across to the Lake District Mountains. Lots of space and comfortable rooms including spacious lounge and bar. Food was excellent

Review 89:There was nothing I can say we did not like!

Review 90:Exterior of Victorian House. Lovely peaceful gardens to front and rear. Exquisite interior. Exquisite public rooms. Exquisite grand staircase. Exquisite and tasteful décor. Beautiful bedroom. Excellent mattress. Tastefully furnished. My Hungarian wife's "dream" of what an English Country House should be! Excellent restaurant. Beautiful breakfast! The friendly hospitality to be expected from "typical Cumbrians!"

Review 91:The hotel was beautifully decorated, the lounge was very welcoming with comfortable settees and a lovely log fire and the restaurant was very nice too. Our room was quite big compared to others we have experienced and very nicely decorated with a lovely bathroom and excellent views through the windows. The food was excellent with the best homemade chips I have ever tasted. Breakfast was very good too - loved the fried bread! The staff were very friendly especially the nice man on the desk who took us to our room...need I say more!!

Review 92:Only small criticism - make the food to order rather than buffet. We were the only people eating that evening and there was a tremendous amount of food left over

Review 93:The beautiful setting and facilities at the hotel. I did not expect the standard of quality for the very good price. Very friendly staff and a wonderful open fireplace after a long day filming!

Review 94:The room (number 7) was over a noisy part of the hotel where there must have been a door which constantly slammed for about two and half hours both evenings. not great when you have a headache. There was a few issues with mould in the bathroom and around the window sills.

Review 95:The garden and Gardener was lovely very friendly and gave good advice about where to go and enjoy walks etc... the beds were comfortable and the room and facilites were adequate for what we required. The breakfast and breakfast staff were phenomenal.

Review 96:Staff were a little lacking warmth. Nice, but not very service oriented. Still a good value, but need a little hospitality training.

Review 97:beautiful location and high quality facility. Our room may be the best one there, windows on 3 sides with view of lawns and valley.

Review 98:The hotel condition was dated and poorly maintained though. For example our room overlooked a tarpaulin and brick repaired flat roof.

Review 99:Very nice classic country hotel, very helpful and friendly staff. I would be happy to stay again and tell friends.

Review 100:little cups in the room for tea making. I like tea and lots perhaps a choice and a couple of mugs in the cupboard.

Review 101:Clean, Friendly, home, whacking up and pull back the blinds and 3 peacocks on the wall out side and so restful. food grate. If it wasn't for work it would have been one of the best couple of days this year.

Review 102:Bathroom would have benefited a shelf to place toiletries on

Review 103:I loved the hotel Very relaxing Gorgeous views Friendly staff Will definitely come again

Review 104:The staff were helpful and friendly, the rooms were clean, well presented and comfy, and the setting was beautiful. Would definitely recommend this hotel to family and friends.

Review 105:To be honest mostly everything about this hotel, the food very poor, the staff unpleasant and not helpful at all, apart from the gardener, the staffshould take tips from him! The hotel dirty, we booked the suite/bridal room, this not a suite, the room very basic, had 2 chairs but no table, the furiture badly stained. The toilet door had no lock on it and covered in dirty finger prints. The bathroom floor tiles are badly cracked.

Review 106:TO be honest nothing at all about the hotel, apart from the view from the room, the views are lovely on a bright clear summers day. The gardener who worked at the hotel was a lovely man and he recommended places to visit.

Review 107:Getting back at 10.15 to find the bar closed and no one around. Only having 1 chair in the bedroom.

Review 108:Warm welcome friendly staff excellent location for a quiet get away. Evening meals well worth staying in for love the smoked haddock on the breakfast menu.

Review 109:Nothing to not like

Review 110:The lady that did the breakfasts, was the nicest most helpful member of staff, the peacocks roaming free were great to see. The location was lovely.

Review 111:Only regret is that we couldn't stay longer than the two nights as work beckoned.

Review 112:Really good location. We were in room 14 which is at the back of the hotel , it was very comfortable and quiet. Not a scenic view but we were quite satisfied. Very helpful, pleasant staff .The food was great.

Review 113:Couldn't find information in bedroom about hotel facilities, meal times etc. Having to return to collect vegetables after being served with meat from carvery!

Review 114:Location Wildlife Friendly staff Good food

Review 115:3 spiders in my room when I arrived, not the hotels fault but I'm petrified of the damn things, bathroom needs a revamp but from the signs they are in the middle of refurbing, loved the hotel overall, only thing missing was a pool! :)

Review 116:The guy on reception was super helpful, the location is really relaxing, the bed was comfortable and the value for money was excellent.

Review 117:Nothing was too much trouble. After feeling unwell at the start of dinner the staff brought the meal to our room. Very relaxed atmosphere Beautiful setting Fantastic room with four poster bed

Review 118:No glass in the bathroom to do your teeth and no shelf for toiletries had to use top of toilet not good really

Review 119:The room and the view. Lounge areas were nice and it was very peaceful.

Review 120:The Hotel is in a beautiful location and is quiet and relaxing; the staff are very friendly and helpful and provide a great service. The Hotel has a well stocked bar and the restaurant meals are really good, the breakfast was superb, probably the best we've ever had. All in all a lovely place to stay.

Review 121:Nothing to dislike - comfortable and homely environment rather than a hotel with 'wow' factor - apart from the location which is stunning!

Review 122:Location Friendly staff Homely atmosphere

Review 123:Chamber staff forgot to sort room, but this was a pure oversight and immediately rectified when reminded.

Review 124:Very friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful setting. Relaxing on terrace in glorious sunshine was ideal. Evening meal was very enjoyable and sufficient vegetarian choice.

Review 125:Menu a little limited and portions enormous . breakfast provided was fairly basic and needed updating,ie cold meats and patisseries etc

Review 126:quiet location and very accomodating staff, nice family run hotel

Review 127:Nothing not to like.

Review 128:Third visit to hotel and would always look for availability at Broughton Craggs before other hotels in the area. Value for money is excellent. Staff friendly and attentive. Portion size's at Dinner are enormous. Breakfast plentiful and freshly cooked to order.

Review 129:We would have preferred a kingsize bed.

Review 130:Broughton Craggs Hotel is a lovely old building in a beautiful spot set within well kept grounds. The food was excellent, the staff efficient and friendly. We would highly recommend the hotel and would not hesitate to return.

Review 131:Great food , huge portions excellent . Fantastic room ,lovely friendly personnel . Beautiful grounds. Very relaxing stay. Would go back anytime. Highly recommend .

Review 132:We didn't think the choice on the menu was great or reflected it's setting but when food arrived it was of excellent standard and huge portions

Review 133:We loved the setting very comfortable bed and huge excellent quality food

Review 134:The room was a little bit pokey and the shower room could do with a facelift (mouldy grout etc)

Review 135:Very peaceful location with easy access to footpaths by the river for dog walking. Nice gardens with peacocks providing entertainment for the dogs. Staff very friendly and helpful.
