Reviews for Hampsfell House Hotel

Review 1:Double bed was a bit small, but we were helped to move to a twin bedded room, which worked out fine.

Review 2:The lovely friendly family atmosphere, and the attention to detail.

Review 3:The shower was difficult to work at first with no instructions available, therefore help had to be sought. The hot tap in the bathroom didn't work, although minor niggles both were important.

Review 4:The location was very quiet and in lovely grounds. Staff very friendly and welcoming. The food was very good, presentation and quality excellent with a reasonable choice offering very good value for money.

Review 5:The nonchalance of the owner...couldny care less if we stayed or went, which I guess was because we weren't dining there and were in for only one night.

Review 6:surroundings exceptional, colourful grounds and off the beaten track. interesting galleries of photographs.

Review 7:No dislikes

Review 8:We received a very warm welcome from Emma who showed us to our spotlessly clean and comfortable rooms. We booked in for dinner in the stylish restaurant food and surroundings were of a very high standard and reasonably priced. Breakfasts were substantial with varied choices to suit everyone. Can't wait to return. Thank you Emma,Sarah and Nicola

Review 9:Radiator not working, though was offered a portable heater. I would not go there again because the hill is too steep for an old person, which I did no know beforehand.

Review 10:Lovely garden and good food. Many positive points and friendly reception. The hotel attracks the sort of interesting clientel that I like to mix with; probably retired professionals.

Review 11:Room was a bit dated. Felt the hotel lacked atmosphere and was a bit old fashioned. Didn't realise on booking how far out from the main shopping area we were. Grange over Sands seemed to close at 5pm.

Review 12:Quiet and peaceful. Breakfast was good. Fairly good value for money.

Review 13:No Television reception. No wifi. Lock in room didn't make me feel confident if had to leave in a hurry.

Review 14:Nice modern bathroom fittings, great for my three year old. Wifi was non existent but just about made do with phone reception to keep daughter entertained because television reception was also very poor.

Review 15:Grange is well located for a drive to the Lakes but there is not an awful lot to do close by. A few nice places to eat and a couple of dodgy pubs. However, the hotel itself does offer a very tasty evening meal and a quiet spot for a couple of drinks.

Review 16:The hotel is lovely and set in beautiful, well-maintained gardens. Nothing was any trouble for the staff. We spent a very comfortable and enjoyable 2 nights in these peaceful surroundings. Grange seems to be a town of dog lovers and our two Jacks had a fabulous time. We particularly enjoyed an evening in Cartmel, a few drinks in the courtyard outside the brewery, and a fantastic meal in a local pub (Kings Arms).

Review 17:I would reccommend getting a better wifi package, as you can only access it at the bar. It would be nice to access it in your room.

Review 18:We were in the room with a four poster bed and jacuzzi bath. It was lovely and we weren't aware we were getting that room. The breakfast was very nice and the lady serving us was excellent. The setting was stunning and all the staff were friendly.

Review 19:Not as described on the website Extremely dated and beds uncomfortable Didn't give the overall impression of being very clean and we were disappointed "Faulty Towers" springs to mind

Review 20:The views from the hotel were beautiful

Review 21:The first room allocated had no shower, only a bath. When we raised this with staff they were initially very unhelpful only agreeing to move us the following night.

Review 22:The food here was excellent.

Review 23:Food much better than average hotel. Evening meal was excellent. Good choice at breakfast, everything freshly cooked. Friendly staff . Nice garden area to sit in.

Review 24:Very friendly, but not intrusive, service. This was a repeat visit to this warm and welcoming small country house hotel. We all hope to come back in September.

Review 25:The bed was uncomfortable, too soft and you rolled off the sides. Pillows were excellent though.

Review 26:Loved the location and atmosphere. Everyone was friendly and the gardens were beautiful.

Review 27:We were refused to be served a drink at the bar after returning from the races. We were far from being drunk, yet the owner insisted that we retire to our room. Very embarrassing all round

Review 28:Clean and tidy

Review 29:Myself and a friend, being avid horse race fans decided to visit Cartmel racecourse, the location of the hotel was ideal(10minutes in a taxi), the hotel was excellent, staff were friendly, we had the classic twin room which was very clean and weel kept, the food was excellent, also very good value for money, we would definitely stay again

Review 30:The décor was a little old fashioned though that is personal taste. The mattress on the bed needed renewing as the springs have collapsed at one side.

Review 31:The location was beautiful and peaceful in mature gardens. The food was excellent. The staff were helpful and friendly.

Review 32:Poor communication between hotel and booking website left us stranded with no chance of walking up the steep hill with luggage and no taxis available . Taxi numbers and wifi code out of date .

Review 33:Quiet location and lovely gardens

Review 34:Discuss your choice of room beforehand with the hosts as some rooms are bath only !

Review 35:Excellent breakfast and dining experience.Accomodation good, clean and comfortable and hosts helpful. We enjoyed our 2 night stay very much and would recommend, especially the choice and quality of the meals.

Review 36:Hike up the hill from the conference centre and station but worth it

Review 37:Comfy huge four poster bed, friendly helpful staff, whirlpool bath, great food. Highly recommended

Review 38:Found phone reception (in area generally not just the hotel) was very intermittent & wifi not accessible. However this did mean we were able to enjoy the good weather & pretty surroundings in peace & quiet.

Review 39:Location was good, just a short walk to the pretty, quiet village. The food - we had dinners & breakfast - was delicious.

Review 40:Booked for 3 nights.Bedrooms definitely need updating - wires everywhere because plugs in wrong places. no shower, only bath in the room we were given. didnt ask when booking because your description said bath and shower. had we known no shower, would have requested one on booking as I am unable to get in &out of bath. Immediately when we were shown room, we asked to change to one with shower, were given another room for 2 nights, then asked to move rooms for 3rd night because that room was pre-booked-charged £20 extra,(bed linen charge) despite it not being our fault. Got impression they were trying to make money at every opportunity. Also noticed we were overcharged when we checked bill. Nice hotel but attitude of staff has unfortunately put us off ever going back. Such a shame. They blamed booking.com completely for confusion over description of bathroom facilities.

Review 41:Good food. Quiet ambience. beautiful gardens. Owners have tried to provide guests with luxuries in rooms eg bath foam, soap, body lotion, shampoo etc, tea/coffee facilities. bedrooms clean, beds comfortable with lovely bedlinen.

Review 42:None really. As a minor point we would have preferred baths to have been equipped with grab handles or other aids to getting out of the bath..

Review 43:Friendly, helpful,

Review 44:I would have liked it even more if the WiFi had been obtainable in the bedrooms, but unfortunately only available in the public rooms which was disappointing.

Review 45:The breakfast were superb, and the staff friendly and courteous. The gardens were also worth the visit, unfortunately the weather was a bit damp and cold, so no sitting out. The veggie garden I would have killed for, although not open to the visitors but from what I could see of it made me green with envy..The dinner menu looked extremely good value and a good choice but did not get the chance to sample it, maybe next time.

Review 46:Nothing!

Review 47:Plenty of selection at breakfast. Excellent fish & chip supper on Friday evening. After a day's walking it was good to be able to soak in a hot bath with complimentary toiletries provided.

Review 48:Relaxed atmosphere. Friendly staff. Great Location. Excellent food. Close to Grange town centre which is a lovely place. Easy drive to the Lakes. One day we enjoyed a trip by train to Ulverston, another lovely town.

Review 49:Beautiful setting. Lovely room, excellent food. A tiny bit pricey if travelling alone, then again I am only 23. Probably more manageable if you're older. I'd recommend it :) x

Review 50:The hotel setting is perfect and convenient with a short walk into town. Food was excellent. Altogether a really good hotel. We didn't take our dog but wish we had. Dogs were more than welcome.

Review 51:The hotel was cosy and welcoming. Lovely room which was clean and comfortable and lovely bottle of prosecco on arrival. The breakfast was delicious and plenty of choice.

Review 52:nothing

Review 53:Lovely old fashioned hotel giving that warm welcome feel. Breakfast exceptional. Haddock if you wanted it no extra charge. Lovely walkin shower

Review 54:No phone signal in the hotel which for me was not much of a problem as you could get one at the end of the drive

Review 55:Loved the fact that my dog was allowed to stay with me while I ate allthough it was in a different room from the dining area which is perfectly understandable and one which I would have preffered anyway. Exellent woods 2 mins from the hotel to walk my dog (I actually got lost we walked that far)

Review 56:I have stayed in many hotels this. Rates in our top 3. Thank you Rose and Brian for a lovely weekend and thank you for running us about picking us up from station takers back to the station and thank the girls. have a Merry Christmas

Review 57:Nothing

Review 58:Hotel location - out of the way but close enough to walk into town and the prom. Turn left out of the hotel entrance and walk up into the hills and towards the hospice, superb location for taking stunning photographs. Food was outstanding, service was excellent. Hotel was cosy and comforting, quiet and relaxing.

Review 59:...on foot it is a fair old stomp uphill from the town. I dislike duvets, and the compulsory music at breakfast, but you get those everywhere.

Review 60:The hotel is comfortable, well appointed, and with friendly staff. If you want to go walking on the hills it is well placed, but...

Review 61:On immediate entry into the lounge, with the log fire, comfy seats and well stocked bar - I just knew we would enjoy our stay. The hotel is off the beaten track, so it was a comfort to know the restaurant and bar provided all our needs for a relaxing end to a tough day's walking the hills of South Lakes area, without the need to drive out in search of a decent place to eat - it was all here, under one roof! (Try the Friday night 'fish & chip special' dinner.) The bedrooms were all well appointed, with very comfortable beds, and good choice of decoration. A good quality English breakfast with alternative options provided an excellent start to each day. The hotel was a well run family establishment, and we shall definitely be visiting again.

Review 62:Cant say i disliked anything really

Review 63:The breakfast was very good especially the sausages! We didnt eat in as we were out and about all the time. The relaxed atmosphere.

Review 64:If I had to make one dislike it would be that the base of our bed needs replacing as it was so creaky it woke my husband every time he moved.

Review 65:Having stayed in Grange over Sands for many years this was our first stay at this hotel. We found it excellent value and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. Can't understand why it is only rated 2* having stayed at some 3* hotels that don't rate as good as this little gem. Would have liked to thank the proprietors personally but on the day we were leaving there seemed to be some sort of crisis as he had to run and answer his phone.

Review 66:Our bedroom (a twin) had a lack of heating for the first two days so was very cold! However it was eventually sorted, by our third days stay, so we could then have a bath! It also had no shower which we prefer. The door to the bathroom was very close to one of the beds this made for disturbed sleep for whoever is in that bed!

Review 67:The situation is peaceful and picturesque, set in a wooded area with a lovely garden, the family run hotel feels friendly and personal, excellent food and reasonable drinks prices, we enjoyed our stay very much despite the weather!!

Review 68:One of the staff who served us needs to learn to say please and thank you. The weather was appauling so we needed the hotel to be excellent but I would only rate it as good.

Review 69:The meals provided were good with plenty of choice and value for money.

Review 70:Wifi down for all 3 days of our visit, no shower only a bath with no grab rails so very nervous when trying to get in and out of bath, no shaver point, food was better when owner cooked. We had been before, but not again I'm afraid.

Review 71:The food was good, the owners were very nice.

Review 72:No downsides.

Review 73:Great service, friendly staff, fabulous location and excellent quality hotel that was really good value. We stayed in room 6 which was very comfortable and plenty of room for our Labrador too. The food was also delicious!

Review 74:Having to leave your key when you were out so hotel owners did not lock front door - felt like a guilty kid trying to sneak in un-noticed by parents. There is a key pad lock on the door why not use it?!

Review 75:Lovely breakfast - good tasty food Very clean facilities Ample free Parking Friendly owners and staff Lovely hotel setting and garden

Review 76:Can't think of anything we didn't like. Honest...this is unusual for me..

Review 77:The staff were friendly and polite. Restful surroundings, plenty of character. Amazing gardens. Local walks...not far away from centre. Very Clean. Decor good. Food out of this world. good choice. extremely good value for quality.

Review 78:Set amongst beautiful landscaped gardens in Grange over Sands, just 10 minutes walk from the high street and breathtaking estuary views. Peaceful, quiet and tranquil. A wonderful location and place to stay.

Review 79:As the hotel was very dog friendly,as a person with allergies,I would have like the option of a room ,no dogs had occupied.

Review 80:I liked the location, general atmosphere, pleasant owners, beautiful gardens, comfortable clean room, well cooked breakfasts.

Review 81:Warm welcome, clean and comfortable room, excellent breakfasts and evening meals.the venison stew and steak pie could have been made in heaven. Hotel in isolated location, tucked out of the way. Beautiful gardens

Review 82:Not sure what it wants to be to many pictures and ornaments throughout

Review 83:Good breakfasts and attentive staff who work their socks off . . Friendly and welcoming .

Review 84:there wasn't anything to dislike

Review 85:The food was absolutely delicious the house and grounds were excellent and all staff were very friendly and helpful

Review 86:staff were not very pleasant and the owner was very arrogant , the bar closed at 11pm which we didnt have a problem with , but the seating lounge for guests got locked up at 11pm as well so guests either had to sit outside or go to there rooms , would have been nice to have somewhere to sit quietly until we were ready to go to bed, we were in room no 4 found it far too small to spend a lot of time in

Review 87:breakfast was a good helping and was very nice

Review 88:The room was clean and more than we imagined. We loved the four poster bed . Food was great quantity and quality. The staff always asked if we were happy or anything we wanted. 10/10

Review 89:The setting is beautiful and tranquil, ideal for a restful break. The gardens are well cared for and had a beautiful display of flowers and plants at the time of our visit. The building is a period property and enhanced by tasteful furnishings. The food was delicious and well presented. It's convenient for Grange centre and some local walks straight from the hotel door. We will be back again.

Review 90:Can't think of anything we didn't like. In fact it is deserving of a much higher star rating.

Review 91:Clean, friendly, fab food, thick walls so heard absolutely no noise from elsewhere in the house. Obviously supported and appreciated as a local restaurant. The gardens were so well tended with colour everywhere. Attentive staff.

Review 92:Would like to have been able to eat a little later in the evening but not a big issue.

Review 93:Excellent location although quite a steep climb if walking.Beautifully laid out gardens. We had dinner in the hotel on each of our 3 nights - really nice food much of it locally sourced.

Review 94:Wi-fi reception in our room was variable - inevitable in a house with thick walls (but good on the stairs).

Review 95:Extremely friendly staff, good standard of cooking both at breakfast and in the evening, an amazingly secluded position up above Grange and the stunning grounds.

Review 96:Prefer earlier breakfast than 0830 start, but they happily offer ed to do an early one on my departure day, which was great.

Review 97:Generous portions, popular with local folks, can walk to town, if you don't mind hilly return, rather better than its 2 star rating would suggest. Will be back.

Review 98:Poor customer service, we had a problem with the radiator in our room which wouldn't turn off (this was the hottest day of the year so far!), so asked if it could be rectified, we were told to open the door and the window (which we had already done) and that it was an old heating system. In the end, we had to fix it ourselves! (luckily we had a tool kit in the Lambretta). We pre-booked our evening meal for 7pm during breakfast at the management's request, turned up just before 7pm and were escorted out of the dining room and asked to wait in the bar area, which we did, for about an hour. We had rushed to get back for 7pm, not very happy.

Review 99:Location, food (fresh home grown veg was delicious), hotel and garden - a lovely old building with plenty of character, safe parking.

Review 100:Too much clutter everywhere which obviously meant it was difficult to keep clean. The hotel had a distinct musty smell and in dire need of refurbishment. It was like walking into an Old People's Home.

Review 101:The food was good.

Review 102:The only negative was the quality of the pillows.I found them very flat

Review 103:We loved the rural setting, the house itself and very friendly service. The breakfast was excellent!

Review 104:There was nothing we did not like !

Review 105:Welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Quality of meals (evening & breakfast) was excellent, freshly prepared using local ingredients. Also drinks & coffee. Lovely gardens which were obviously well tended.

Review 106:The owner was very unfriendly On arrival refused to allow us to charge battery (never been a problem anywhere else) told us he would charge us £10 extra as business was poor and he was strugglinwe were asked about evening meal which was available 7,30 said we would think about - he then said it was now only available till 6,30 20 minutes after arrival I saw he again and started using Heath and safety as a reason we could not charge battery ( charging uses trickle charge about 20 pence per charge. We went to bar after visiting a lovely restaurant in Grange asked about the local. Ulverston beer he gave a marketing leaflet from brewery a quickly told me in no uncertain terms not to keep it as it was the only one he had, Ulverston brewery would be less than eased The owner made Rigsby from rising damp look great . Its time the owner went a training course on customer service before drives customers away We will never return and will advise or friends etc never to go near the place, He is the worst hotelier we have ever had and we stay in hotels in excess of 10 times a year

Review 107:Breakfast

Review 108:Fairly long walk down to the town, though it is close, and a short cut through the woods is pleasant enough.

Review 109:Second visit to this hotel, where are made to feel most welcome. Room is clean and well equipped. Breakfast choice is superb, and quality of food excellent. Nice well tended garden to enjoy. Home from home really!

Review 110:The food here is the best I've ever had! If you stay here you must try the restaurant at night - its better than any other I've ever been to! I had a Morrocan lamb dish and it was my favourite dish Ive ever had! Its a must try if you go here!!!!!! But we went the restaurant here twice and all starters, mains and deserts were incredible! The breakfast in the morning was also amazing! Full english made how you want with a buffet selection of continental The staff there are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble -its like home from home!!!! The room was super clean and very good! Great facilities; shampoo, bath soak everything you need! We had a lovely view from our room and was so peaceful and quiet! Cant wait to go back!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Review 116:All food was very good.also it was pretty good value all round.

Review 117:Dining room rather dark

Review 118:Nice spot. Lovely room

Review 119:The antidote to chain hotels. Excellent room, good breakfast. Owners very welcoming,

Review 120:Quality of food. Interior furnishing. Helpful staff.

Review 121:We love the cosy and friendly atmosphere and the great food at Hampsfell House. So many hotels are ultra modern and sterile... this is the antidote.

Review 122:Friendly staff, food, atmosphere

Review 123:Dated bathroom, Shortage of coffee sugar etc, more requested but didn't get any.

Review 124:Food very good, quiet location, lovely gardens

Review 125:A bit over priced, especially the food.
