Reviews for Sopwell House Hotel

Review 1:There was nothing I didn't like

Review 2:The welcome and hospitality of the staff was excellent. The value for money was very good, the food and service staff equally good.the only thing I found was the bedroom was extremely hot even when I put the thermostat down.

Review 3:room service tray charge and food were to expensive it was the same as a 3 course meal in the restaurant and we only had a sandwich and a salad.

Review 4:The receptionist was excellent, very attentive and I spoke to a lady on the phone to order room service and she as also had excellent customer care, it's so nice to speak to people like that.

Review 5:Room wasn't ready for an hour after the agree 3pm check in time which was a big pity as we only staying one night; room was also cold.

Review 6:Spa area and breakfast

Review 7:Nothing!

Review 8:From the moment we stepped into Sopwell House we were greeted with such a warm welcome. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and the team at Sopwell made sure it was one to remember! We were given a free room upgrade, a card and special treats. We absolutely loved the spa facilities and wished we booked a treatment. A truly wonderful and memorable experience. We can't wait to go back!

Review 9:When we went in to our room bearing in mind it was one of the coldest nights no heating on and had to keep my coat on all evening in the room until, we went to dinner

Review 10:I really liked our room and the staff friendly

Review 11:I would have preferred more light in the bathroom as the shower/bath system wasn't one I had used before and I had difficulty in reading the various symbols on the controls.

Review 12:I stayed for one night as I am in the process of moving house and my new house was not ready. Sopwell provided a relaxing break after all the hiatus of the previous week.

Review 13:Spa and restaurant need to be bigger for the amount of people that were at the hotel. It seemed like there wasn't enough space for everyone!

Review 14:Staff were very friendly and it's a peaceful location. Spa was nice.

Review 15:The bedroom was freezing, the TV didn't work and it was so small you had to climb over a table to get from the bed to the bathroom, if you were the unlucky one sleeping nearest the window.

Review 16:Spa and bar staff very nice.

Review 17:only one negative, not enough chairs at spa pool... but everything was lovely , we will come back.

Review 18:Staff were so friendly and very helpful, all smiled when you walked past them. Hotel was so modern and so clean. Bedroom was so lovely . Pool was so lovely and everything was so perfect. we will def coming back... Foods were super

Review 19:The restaurant was fully booked, and we arrived before check in. this meant the only time we could arrange dinner was after 9:00pm. we opt for room service, we were told a 30min wait for food which turned into 90mins before arriving.

Review 20:Staff in the Spa were really lovely. Natasha and Dani.

Review 21:Nothing

Review 22:This is a beautiful hotel, the new mews suites with hot tubs are amazing and beauitfully decorated. staff were extremely friendly and helpful! we loved our stay here and will definately come back

Review 23:Taxi needed to go into town or anywhere.

Review 24:Beautiful property and lovely accommodations. The service and food are excellent! Spa, workout area, and indoor pool are great.

Review 25:First time I have travelled alone and felt completely comfortable Staff welcoming and hotel restaurants made choosing a meal to eat solo a good experience. Safe, air conditioning and TV easy to use!

Review 26:No water was provided in our room and it was an Executive room. The refreshments such as tea and biscuits were not replenished everyday.

Review 27:I loved the customer service. Especially from one of the front desk staff...a lovely lady called Gisella. Every member of staff you walked past would greet according to the time of day...very pleasant.

Review 28:Drinks very expensive. Bar bill included service charge and also a space to add a discretionary gratuity. One or the other please, although I would prefer just a discretionary tip.

Review 29:Nicely appointed and comfortable hotel

Review 30:The staff were unhelpful, rooms tiny yet £195pn and the breakfast was horrendous. The breakfast room is far too small and can't comfortably accommodate everyone.

Review 31:The rooms are tasteful and the overall place feels nice and grand but unfortunately doesn't live up to expectations

Review 32:Shower not working and old-fashioned device, a/c noisy and not working well, not one member of staff with mother tongue of English with the result that there were service issues arising from failed communication. Staff in restaurant gossiping and not attending to diners.

Review 33:Opulence, gym, spa and common areas.

Review 34:Two of us ordered poached haddock for breakfast in the brasserie, it tasted a little strong but I thought nothing of it. Unfortunately both of us were really quite ill much later in the day. As we had all checked out by that time it seemed too late to complain, but it was the only food that we two had both eaten on that day.

Review 35:Lovely evening meal in the a la carte Restaurant. Good spa facilities. Comfortable beds.

Review 36:Felt a bit understaffed for an expensive establishment. The bath didn't work, and the engineer agreed. The room service menu was missing, and the news was greeted with disbelief by reception, and also the member of staff who attended and hunted fruitlessly for the document. There was insufficient coffee in room, and reception had limited supplies so some had to be brought up. The card machine didn't work in the room for the food, which was very expensive and not great. Receptionist seemed under pressure and not terribly friendly.

Review 37:Nice location and surroundings.

Review 38:Only drawback for me was the bar prices, apart from that, everything was excellent.

Review 39:The staff were friendly, the room very comfortable & clean, the food excellent (especially Breakfast) & the spa was excellent also. Football fans will like the display of shirts from clubs & international sides that has stayed at the hotel before.

Review 40:Drinks at the bar were slightly expensive £4.50 for a bottle of beer. Lift was broken when we checked in, however it began to work later that day. When we went to use it, realised it was further away from our room so stairs were quicker. Slightly annoying, but we got over it by jumping in the jacuzzi.

Review 41:Our bedroom was clean and very modern. Big bed overlooking their two fields, even bigger shower and all amenities necessary. In our room we were greeted with a small complimentary chocolate cake with a card congratulating us on our anniversary (nice touch). The spa facilities were brilliant. We particularly liked the pool and jacuzzi area which was open until 10pm. My girlfriend had a prenatal massage which she said was lovely. We were made to feel welcome from the beginning and felt like we could ask for anything without hesitation. All in all, are thinking about going back already. Highly recommended.

Review 42:The room was rather small and initially required further cleaning although this was done promptly. There was a large wedding on site and as a result the room was noisy.

Review 43:The Staff were helpful and attentive , Food in the Brasserie was good and the spa was clean and calm, Any concerns received a positive response.

Review 44:Restaurant not open on a Monday evening and couldn't get a table in the brasserie til 9pm. The chef did not know what a Greek salad was - I hate lettuce and it came as basically a mound of lettuce with a few pieces of feta and tomato - unimpressed.

Review 45:Room was fabulous and loved the pool and spa

Review 46:the individual bills from each of the uses (bar, room, lunch, drinks, breakfast)....surely better to have a tab and then close one bill for all usages.

Review 47:the staff, the bar, the massage, the swimming pool, the location, cleanliness

Review 48:Not that I didnt like but thought the spa treatments are a bit pricey!

Review 49:Great Hotel. Stayed here a few times. Brekfast is great with a wide choice. Facilities are excellent and staff very helpful.

Review 50:Fantastic experience and given the quality really good value. Beautiful setting, stunning building and excellent facilities. Staff went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. It's like a little holiday within a hotel.

Review 51:We were 'upgraded' to an exec room, the room smelled of tobacco smoke and you could only access by going through the conference centre. Not good when a wedding party is in full swing! Very late check in and early check out times meant we couldn't use much of the facilities.

Review 52:The main hotel area is lovely and very welcoming

Review 53:The service at dinner was appallingly slow, the meal was 'basic' for such an establishment, ie minimalistic but in particular poor quality meat (I know as I am a framer and a cook!)

Review 54:No water in the room, complimentary or otherwise and prison style toilet paper

Review 55:Reception, although busy, instantly got an additional member of staff to deal with us

Review 56:We had a really lovely time, the hotel and spa are great and food delicious. However the greatest assest to Sopwell House is the amazing team of staff - they were so welcoming, friendly and nothing was too much trouble - sincere thanks to all of them from the reception to restaurnts/bars and spa. A perfect escape to the country from London.

Review 57:The booking was a graduation present. The staff provided some complimentary items which made my son and his partner feel very special. Could not recommend highly enough.

Review 58:The breakfast was overpriced. We paid nearly £20 each for breakfast + £6 for room service. You would expect a banquet ! Not a bowl of cornflakes and chocolate crossiant and a cup of tea !

Review 59:The spa was great !!

Review 60:The bathroom had not been cleaned properly, there was some residue remaining from the previous stay.

Review 61:The spa facilities and brasserie were lovely. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 62:Beautiful hotel all around, room, spa, restaurants, common areas. Amazing dinner in the brasserie. All very clean and modern. Warm and cosy. Great ESPA toiletries. Lovely and helpful staff.

Review 63:Due to the nature of the hotel the room service prices are really expensive and food was just ok. Breakfast is just ok too. Would have liked more healthy, fresh options as its a spa hotel.

Review 64:Another great stay at Sopwell house. This time used the pool too which was great.

Review 65:Would have like a fridge in our room 215, it was big enough, maybe something for the future !!

Review 66:Check in was very good. Loved our room 215, nothing was too much trouble. Very happy.

Review 67:Staff were unhelpful. We stayed here for our first night as a married couple and they wouldn't even open the front door for us when we arrived that night even though we had our arms full with things from the wedding, they had staff stood in the foyer chatting and working. My whole family stayed there and we must have spent over £2000, and they wanted 50p to print off a picture on their printer. That was shocking. I think they days of free upgrades for the bride and groom have disappeared as they tried the hard sell of asking to pay for an upgrade. They did not make one single effort to make our stay special even though they knew we chose to stay at Sopwell house for our first night married together. I can name many other hotels that do! The hotel isn't worth £185 a night to be honest. Such a shame for a nice setting. You're paying for the name, nothing else!

Review 68:The breakfast was nice and the hotel was well kept inside with a mixture of traditional and modern.

Review 69:We were made to feel so welcome from the start. As we were staying for our honeymoon the staff upgraded our room free of charge which was a very nice surprise. All the staff around the hotel were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is stunning and the facilities are brilliant.

Review 70:Loved the ambience of the hotel. Beautiful gardens which were very well kept. Liked the hotel itself with which was also very well kept. Spa pool was beautiful. Didn't have time to use all the facilities of the spa but hope to return sometime for a slightly longer period and make the most of the wonderful spa. Only gripe was that our room had absolutely no view and the shower over the bath was ,for us ,hard to access.

Review 71:The room didn't have a minibar /fridge.

Review 72:It was very relaxing and the queen size bed was great. The sauna and steam room were spacious. We had a great nights sleep with the blackout curtains.

Review 73:Location excellent for St Albans and main Roman and cathedral attractions. Grounds beautiful. Spa and pool facilities superb. Dinner in Brasserie excellent. Staff very helpful. All in all an excellent overnight stay.

Review 74:Rudeness of staff. Lied about the food being warmed up. Had to send our main course back as it was inedible and the staff were not concerned. Went without a evening meal except for a starter. The staff just muddled most things. Ass-manager appeared to be interested and fobbed us of with a free upgrade and a complementary meal at the dreadful Bistro.

Review 75:Clean

Review 76:Soft drink cost. Charged different price during the day £7.70 for 2 large cokes. Then £5.50 for 1 large coke in the evening! Would liked a minibar in the room, mainly to keep my drink cool (as stayed when it was hot).

Review 77:Breakfast was lovely and staff very helpful. Rooms are a good size and very clean. Pool great too, lots of steps - for the men to get to it though. (And they changed the changing rooms over during our stay, for a person with bad knees - the steps were a bit to much!)

Review 78:We were offered an upgrade from standard room to a balcony four poster bed room , well worth the few pounds extra beautiful room extremely comfy

Review 79:I think some of the staff need more training in customer service as this was lacking. Whether this was due to staff being on summer jos I do not know.

Review 80:Was a bit disappointed by breakfast. Very standard compared to how lovely the home is.

Review 81:After a really long day (I didn't check in till 11pm) I got a friendly arrival and the bed was just soooo comfy. I loved all the added extras you get in the room too like dressing gowns and flannels etc. Bliss.

Review 82:The hotel is perfect any one that appreciates picturesque scenery, and a hotel that has modern decor. The staff are extremely friendly and make an effort to accommodate your every need.

Review 83:Was a lovely stay but food was a little bit expensive. We got stuck in the lift and the alarm button didn't work. Thank goodness a passing guest pressed the button on the outside of the lift doors and we were able to escape.

Review 84:We enjoyed the use of the facilities and the room was very comfortable and clean.,

Review 85:We were"upgraded" to a Mews suite. Unfortunately there was a shared pool right outside our window where a group of guest enjoyed a party into the early hours of the morning. Not great considering the reason for our trip was the first night away since our babies were born 3 years ago! Hope of a peaceful nights sleep vanished.

Review 86:close to London but had a "country" feel.

Review 87:The building, which is pretty ugly apart from the original facade. Also, much less grounds than I'd thought.

Review 88:Amazingly friendly and helpful staff = 90% to making a good experience.

Review 89:Bed was a bit too soft for our liking. Despite a superior room, our view was of the foyer which meant we kept our curtain partly shut for privacy

Review 90:Very attentive staff but not intrusive. Although there was a wedding party we hardly noticed as they were in a separate part of the hotel. Lovely location

Review 91:The service in the brasserie was incredibly slow. We ate at 9pm and were at the table for such a long time that I felt I was going to fall asleep there and then.

Review 92:We really enjoyed our lovely room and the quiet surroundings; the trip made a lovely change of scene from a busy week in the city. The spa was incredibly relaxing and not too busy. It was also nice that there were no children running around so there was a tranquil atmosphere.

Review 93:chipped cups /glasses, flat larger a request was made prior to boking which was not delivered by the hotel tea serviced cold with breakfast (twice) not good value for money I'm afraid!!!!!

Review 94:staff were very friendly and apologetic

Review 95:One thing the heating in room 142 was so hot and it seemed to come on by itself. At night it was too much!!!!

Review 96:As soon as you step in your greeted with lovely welcoming staff. Grazia is so lovely. Great ambience, friendly people. Rooms clean and comfortable. Facilities very good, refreshments refreshing.

Review 97:Perhaps too well managed... Bill put thru the door for express check out - that is efficient, but may impress those on business travel more, not the ones looking for leisure and coziness.

Review 98:A convenient stop over from London. Good facilities.

Review 99:Room far too small for the rate charged, room directly above air-con units so noisy.

Review 100:Nice location, good food, clean room. Most staff friendly and polite.

Review 101:The bed was so bad. Very small so worse than budget chain hotels and we kept rolling into the middle. Had a terrible nights sleep. It was the size of a very large single or a very small double. Not what is expected thesedays. The room was beautiful but tiny - hence the small bed. What a shame!

Review 102:Everything was great - location, food, staff, appearance of hotel and room décor. TV didn't work but they worked hard to get it to function which it did in the end. However it would be an idea to test it before guests arrive?

Review 103:There was no music in the spa area when waiting for your treatment all you could hear was the loud laundry cupboard being slammed next to you ( this is not the relaxing start you want for your spa day) The main pool area was also a little too warm and both myself and my partner felt dehydrated with no water station at pool side. 3 course lunch in the brassire- staff were quick to attend to your first drink but wrte very slow st clearly plates I often had finished 1 course moved onto another but had 2-3 plates stacked up infront of me. We purchased 2 cokes at lunch as drinks weren't included a 10% service charge was added to our bill a little cheeky when we had little or no service given to us

Review 104:Very modern refurbished room with nice touches like sky tv however the modern shower design meant the floor was soaking after 5 minutes as the glass only came half way across. Breakfast Buffett was excellent ( if this is included in the price of your hotel room) otherwise I felt £15 for a fry up which wasn't cooked fresh for you was a little expensive and £8.50 for porridge was a big no! The spa- the treatments are great and very relaxing I would always recommend the full body massage

Review 105:We wanted a nice few relaxing days within easy reach of the harry potter tour and that's what we got st Albans shops and restaurant really close by added to the experience would fully recommend

Review 106:Minor quibble, lacking a little attention to detail (forgot paper, breakfast so busy a few bits/condiments weren't there or had to be chased etc). Not a huge issue but not perfect either.

Review 107:It's a handsome hotel with nice, if small, spa area in a good location. It's all in good condition and we had a lovely relaxing time.

Review 108:The spa facilities not functioning correctly. Steam room out of order, the sauna wasn't hot enough and the pool smelt of drains.

Review 109:Relaxing atmosphere and food/drink very good.

Review 110:Added gratuity on everything even when ordering a coffee. I have seen previously that you could ask for this to be removed but I would feel uncomfortable doing so.

Review 111:Very lovely hotel and the room was gorgeous.. The conservatory also was nice to have a coffee out in the sun.

Review 112:Room looked a bit shabby, needing a coat of fresh paint. Toilet paper holder was wobbly, bath mat needs changing, but the worst was the bath tub! It looked really bad!

Review 113:Staff was amazing, helpful, just really nice people. Breakfast was lush! Bed was really good size. Towels super soft :-)

Review 114:There was a sir who served us in the lounge and he made us wait more than 30 mins to pay the bill everytime we've been there.

Review 115:I absolutely loved the bed! So comfy and cozy! Had my best sleep over there! I also loved the pool! Perfect for my needs since I don't know how to swim :)

Review 116:The standard room wasn't as big as expected and did not contain tea and coffee making facilities as expected, however this did not effect our stay. The comfort of the bed made up for it!!

Review 117:The hotel had fanatic facilities, lovely food and drink and very comfortable rooms!

Review 118:We thought the outside of the hotel itself looked a little tired, and didn't do the interior and services offered any justice.

Review 119:Starting with the location (nr St Albans), and continuing with the friendly and professional reception from all the staff, through to the available facilities (the Spa is exceptional), and ending with the excellent food offered in the Bistro (both dinner and breakfast) meant the overall experience for us was top quality.

Review 120:When we first arrived the whole feeling was very relaxed & the staff were lovely!! Our room was lovely overlooking the gardens & the bed extremely comfortable. The bath was big enough for 2. Breakfast in the morning was delicious!!

Review 121:We got lost a bit, maybe signs could be a little clearer as the place is so big

Review 122:The staff were extremely polite and helpful. The room was amazing, most of all the bed! It was so comfortable, which made it so hard to leave the room haha! I will definitely be going back, especially as there will be a new section available :-)

Review 123:A late arrival at the hotel after work. Still had to finish some documents on my computer. Would have loved a big bottle of water to be there and an apple / packet of mixed fruit and nuts or something just to keep me going. Wouldn't take much to do

Review 124:Staff very pleasant from front of house to dining room. Very nice feel and well presented.

Review 125:Loved the spa ..... Staff were really helpful And the food was amazing Drinks were a little expensive but hey I would still visit again.... Loved our stay

Review 126:The main Restaurant was closed. This is excellent. The Bistro is not nearly as good. Fine for a 'Bistro' but not a great dining experience.

Review 127:Its a lovely location - Great staff, nice rooms excellent Spa.

Review 128:Roaring fire in the reception area gave a warm, cosy welcome. Bar and restuarant staff were friendly and helpful. Room was spaceous, nicely decorated and peaceful.

Review 129:Room 256 was the smallest broom cupboard without a view and felt so cheated of my experience. Truly disappointed.

Review 130:Loved the prospect of staying at the historical London residence of Lord Mountbatten and very excited as finally able to incorporate the night with our New Year break. Staff and breakfast all very lovely

Review 131:A bit pricy! Loud people leaving functions late at night and making noise in car park and corridors. Very busy - crowded breakfast and tea rooms.

Review 132:Good fitness centre Good bed Iron in room Good bath and shower Good food

Review 133:Size of the room was very small Lack of Customer Directory in room had to request Room Service Menu delivery of which was slow Food good & tasty although not value for money Bathroom had seen better days rusty around plug, bath took an age to run & fake marble worn View from the room was terrible

Review 134:Great building & surroundings. Comfortable bed & Sky including Sports Good breakfast
