Reviews for Shepherds Hotel
Review 1:Decor is a little tired now but that doesn't really bother me!
Review 2:The staff were brilliant! We came up to Cumbria the weekend of the floods and my family were all travelling from different areas. After nightmare journeys the staff made us all feel so welcome and couldn't do enough to help us! The rooms are massive, comfy beds and clean. Breakfast is good too!
Review 3:Hotel is out of town so not within walking distance of town. It is a cheap place to stay but give the impression of being most suited to walkers, backpackers etc and is certainly not luxury. Rooms are clean and functional.
Review 4:Bargain price hotel well located for the Cumbria coast and North Lakes.
Review 5:Manager made a big fuss over booking error, I wanted a double and given a single. If you want a double, you must state this in the comments box, other wise you will be allocated a single, which it does state.
Review 6:Location and comfortable rooms
Review 7:As we were only staying for one night, the location was excellent. On waking up in the morning we found that the lights were not working, but it was attended to immediately upon reporting it. The breakfast was very good and overall it was good value for our money. Will be sure to recommend it to friends
Review 8:reception area dull and unwelcoming, receptionist was unsure of what was happening in the hotel eg. he did not know at 4pm if they were serving food that evening.
Review 9:Food good, restaurant and bar staff very efficient.
Review 10:I didn't like the mattress in my room. It was incredibly hard and meant that I did not get a good nights sleep. I would definitely give the hotel a 2nd chance, but I hope that they don't have the same mattresses in every room.
Review 11:I liked the fact that it was easy to find in the dark. The signage for the hotel was absolutely excellent!
Review 12:The room and carpet is ready for refreshing.
Review 13:The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The location was close to the main highway but still very quiet. The breakfast was good in quantity and quality.
Review 14:Stained and dirty looking carpet in room. I was informed on the web site that payment would be taken at the hotel; payment was taken from my credit card on the day I booked!
Review 15:Friendly staff, comfortable bed, good breakfast.
Review 16:Very friendly hotel, pleasant rooms and a good breakfast. Watch out for the fact that the front doors are locked at 10pm, though they give you a key if you have already checked in.
Review 17:The Sheep & Wool Centre doesn't appear to be on site anymore. neither was the 'Sheep Shop' However this didn't spoil the visit.
Review 18:Hotel staff brilliantly friendly and helpful. Our dog was made most welcome too!
Review 19:Waited over 45 minutes to be served breakfast. Continental breakfast consisted of 3 small pieces of ham, 2 of cheese, half a tomato and a 3 inch piece of baguette. Not value for money at all.
Review 20:The views were nice
Review 21:The fact that booked well in advance for two doubles and one family when I got there it was two twins because no speak faction on booking from you to hotel direct so booking . Com at fault not hotel
Review 22:Helpfully and friendly staff plenty off parking for two large vehicles with boats
Review 23:Lack of change on the menus like could do scrambled egg and smoked salmon for breakfast and at any time. Could do more variety. I think the owners are deliberately running the property down this isa real shame.
Review 24:Friendly helpful staff
Review 25:The carpet in the room could do with a steam clean. But apart from that the room was clean and tidy and the large shower was great.
Review 26:Staff were very helpful, polite and friendly
Review 27:Friendliness of the staff and their hospitality especially the manager. They were all very helpful and accommodating. An excellent place to lodge and I will lodge again any day and at anytime.
Review 28:The toilet flush is alittle overpowering. Stand back when you flush!
Review 29:Carlos, the manager, is a credit to the hotel. Really looks after and cares for the people staying in his hotel! Shower is very powerful. Would highly recommend.
Review 30:Utilitarian design of building; only the bedroom had a window. It was worse that a military barracks! The dining room and bar would have been more suited to a canteen in a factory!
Review 31:Convenient location.
Review 32:Nothinģ - could do with outdoor seating area
Review 33:Ònly on a short stay but seems perfect for the lakes and only a mile from town (èxcellent marķet wedsnday)
Review 34:Hotel was clean, staff were friendly and helpful and location was perfect for both my wife's visit to Woolfest and my own visit to Jenning's brewery.
Review 35:The manager had a very loud voice. He challenged a guest who had paid for breakfast, saying his room did not include it, in front of all the guests at breakfast. It was most embarrassing
Review 36:convenience - so close to Mitchell's Auction Mart, venue for Woolfest. The waitress was very friendly and customer-orientated.
Review 37:An extra spare pillow in each room would have been useful.(there was only one in each twin room we had two rooms booked.) Dining room /bar would benefit from redecoration, made to look a bit lighter.
Review 38:comfortable clean room matched the picture on your website. friendly cheerful staff. No problems throughout overnight stay.
Review 39:the rooms need updating, the staff was busy trying to get us to drink up early and then told us we could take drinks to our rooms the breakfast was a cheap quality we came here a few years ago several times and it was fab and now its just run down wont go here again dissapointed
Review 40:area where it is
Review 41:Occupants in next room had a dog which started howling at approx 2am and continued for an hour. Impossible to sleep. Each time we we walked past room in morning started howling again. Another guest also kept awake.
Review 42:Carlos the man in charge of everything, he coped brilliantly with everything, nothing bothered him, he made our stay that much more enjoyable, what a wonderful happy man, thanks again Carlos. From JoAnne Alan and Charlie our dog.
Review 43:Very very poor, there was no provision on any menu to suit vegetarians - only jacket potatoes. Manager seemed oblivious to this fact & kept pointing at the pile of bland menus on the counter.
Review 44:Staff with the exception of the manager excellent.
Review 45:The dinner menu was very basic and orders had to be placed by 8:00 or you got told off by the staff. The food was cooked and served well but wasn't what we had in mind. Too tired too drive into Cockermouth we accepted what we got. Would recommend the rooms and ease of parking but on a return stay would not have dinner here. The bar isn't very welcoming as it part of the restaurant that seems to have the decor of a ski lodge but no log fire or ambiance.
Review 46:Car parking. Good bath and shower. Well sized room with a large double bed. Quiet. Breakfast was decent in variety and service.
Review 47:Funny stale smell, dinning area is very basic with the bar in the corner. Very poor selection of drinks.
Review 48:The price, quite cheep for a work related trip
Review 49:The staff were extremely friendly and helpful the manager was very funny. We also had a steak cooked on a lava rock for our evening meal which was a new experience for us and was so tender.
Review 50:Roomdingy, bed totallyworn out, mattressthin andworn out.Room dull and in need of better decoration and better quality bedding.Diningroom dark with NO windows at all.Corridors dark and in need ofcolour.Very poor value for money
Review 51:Nearness to CockermouthGood T.V
Review 52:Bed not very comfortable and only one extra pillow for two single beds. Male staff member very loud at breakfast time - a lot of loud talking, and he seemed to leave all the work to the female member of staff!
Review 53:Handy location and great breakfast included in room rate. Female staff member at breakfast was very attentive and pleasant.
Review 54:Decor a bit dated and food stops at 8pm, which caught us out.
Review 55:We wanted a no -fuss no-frills overnight stop with 2 young children and it delivered. Huge family room, very clean with fabulous shower and safe comfy beds.
Review 56:had to think a while to find some cons which explains it !
Review 57:Excellent breakfast Good location, very easily accessible from A66 Friendly staff Big rooms neat and clean
Review 58:Nice breakfast. Plenty of parking. Room size was fine. Location on edge of town but not an issue if driving a car. Elevator available for first floor rooms. Dinner is available at the hotel.
Review 59:Easy access from the A66,with plenty of car parking spaces.Ground floor room, made it ideal with the dog, although she wasn't to keen on the geese outside our room
Review 60:The breakfast seemed very greasy compared to the last time I stayed. Also the room had the handle missing on the bath. This could be seen asdangerous especially as it was easy to hurt yourself. (I didn't)
Review 61:The staff were fab!! After a long day in work and a journey of over 2hours I arrived after 9pm. Tired and hungry the lady was able to make mesomething to eat especially as I had arrived to late for a meal.Couldn't be more helpful.
Review 62:As it was not very busy, the bar closed quite early although it wasn't really a problem as we took a drink back to our room.
Review 63:The rooms were clean and spacious
Review 64:Felt insecure as door was knocked at 1130pm with no response on asking who is it. When informed the staff about it in the morning, they seemed least bothered strangely
Review 65:Location,bed size,breakfast
Review 66:Nothing in particular, but fry-up in the morning wasn't very nice(fatty bacon & cheap tasting sausage)
Review 67:Quite basic, but clean. Carlos, the manager, very entertaining at times. Dinner on Sunday lovely. Both had the gammon steak(chips not so nice though) For the price, would perhaps stay again if down at this area.
Review 68:There was a wet patch on the carpet in the corner by the bedside table which was recent and didn't dry out during our stay. Management suspected a leak and said the room would be taken out of service and investigated after our departure. It didn't spoil our overall enjoyment. The heated towel rail stopped working during our stay but it didn't matter too much as the weather had warmed up.
Review 69:Carlos, the manager, was so funny (ha ha) but professional. Nothing was too much trouble. Also worth special mention were Emma and Carol, who were equally nice and helpful. The room was very comfortable and well equipped, and all the meals (both breakfasts and dinners) were delicious throughout.
Review 70:Bed was uncomfortable, room was extremely overheated and staff were disinterested. Not many guests, but little attention paid to the ones they had.
Review 71:The location.
Review 72:I thought the meals at night were the same every night very nice but it would be nice to have a better selection
Review 73:Ideal place to explore the area The staff were very good and very friendly
Review 74:When you first drive in looks very shabby from the outside but inside is very nice. Restaurant was good excellent foods but staff do get the food orders mixed up and also orders get lost. As we ordered 3 full English breakfast but only two where cooked so had to wait for one to be cooked and as we had to leave early we had to ask for it to be made into a sandwich to take away with us which was not a problem.
Review 75:large room, warm, flat screen tv, large shower very clean, huge bed very comfortable, staff warm friendly very welcoming.
Review 76:Approach to hotel needed a clean up and fire alarm going off at 4:30 am was left unexplained. Would have thought staff could have checked and informed guests that all was well.
Review 77:Room was comfortable and clean, bed comfortable and bathroom had great shower. Staff at breakfast were very attentive, but sorry that scrambled egg not up to scratch.
Review 78:We asked for an extra blanket did not appear. At breakfast we got forgotten about on our first morning. TV did not work.
Review 79:Most of the staff were friendly and helpful, rooms clean.
Review 80:Carpets could do with updating pillows were not very comfortable
Review 81:Carlos was great, always friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent 1 mile from the town, which was within walking distance Nice size room with an excellent shower.
Review 82:Breakfast and dinner timetables are too restrictive. Given the location of the various lakes and other places of interest around the lake District chances are that you miss the dinner and breakfast times
Review 83:staff accommodative and allowed us to stay an extra day without moving us from our rooms. Staff allowed us to have access to hotel after closing checking in times. We arrived late on the check in day
Review 84:the carpets were dirty and worn from workmens boots, the outside was in need of refurbishment and the adjacent road was busy and noisy.
Review 85:the staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was excellent.
Review 86:Would have liked it to be closer to town. Outside is in bad need of decoration.
Review 87:Staff fantastic breakfast great. Steak really nice. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. It needs updating and coukd do with cosier bar to sit in but is value for money.
Review 88:Arrived at hotel 14.00, to find it was closed, because power failure, Should have been told by booking.com. Waited 3 hours in car
Review 89:Very friendly staff, close to all locations
Review 90:Rooms got a little hot, heating was a bit overpowering so we ended up turning the radiator off.
Review 91:Hotel is 1 mile from Cockermouth main Street so possible to wake in 20 mins. Staff are brilliant, we asked for a taxi to be called one night because it was raining and a staff member offered to run us into Cockermouth for free as the taxis weren't answering... Great service,
Review 92:Going home - would like to have stayed longer.
Review 93:We liked everything about this hotel and would definitely stay again. I'd read reviews about road noise and noisy geese but we found it to be a very peaceful place; the geese were right outside of our window but we only heard them once and that was in the middle of the day, Our trip was unfortunately spoiled by me being unwell when we arrived so it meant we spent much more time in the room than we would normally.; I slept for hours on end for the first 2 days and wasn't disturbed once. The staff were all very caring, asked after me every day and were happy to provide food I could manage to swallow with a very sore throat. When I did finally start eating and we used the restaurant we really enjoyed the food - especially the black rock ribeye steak!!
Review 94:Dining room lacks atmosphere and staff not always professional - a lot of calling out to each other across the space - a bit chaotic at times but basically warm-hearted people. No staff on premises at night.
Review 95:Quietness of room. Location handy for Cockermouth. Plenty of parking. Food.
Review 96:For £65 a night I didn't expect much beyond being reasonably clean and the bare essentials, however the quality of the room and other areas I used made it feel like a significantly more expensive hotel. Great value for money all around.
Review 97:Have stayed there before & as always everything excellent. The staff are so friendly, nothing is too much trouble. Also good place to explore the Lakes
Review 98:Lovely clean facilities, fantastic, comfy bed, great, friendly staff, excellent meals. A truly wonderful stay. I would highly recommend this hotel. Tremendous value for money.
Review 99:I stayed as part of a business trip, and this was one of the most comfortable hotels I have stayed in. As a solo female traveler I often feel unsafe, however this was not the case at The Shepherds Hotel. The staff are extremely helpful, friendly and accommodating. The food is good, the rooms are spacious and comfortable also, the shower is fab! Would definitely stay again.
Review 100:The staff were very helpful, the room was nice and warm, clean and cheerfully decorated, with really good lighting. It was very convenient to be able to get a meal quickly and well done, and there was good parking. Breakfast was also good.
Review 101:Don't arrive after 10pm even if they say it's ok. It took us over half an hour to raise someone to give up our room keys even though they knew what time we were going to arrive - no one answers the emergency phone. Double bed is just two singles stuck together so don't fall down the crack. They don't have a late breakfast at weekend so breakfast finishes at 9 am so no lay in.
Review 102:The room was clean and tidy, bed made every day, tea, coffee making facilities good. Breakfast was good and hot if a bit limited on choice.
Review 103:The only thing I didn't like is that I wasn't there for longer
Review 104:very friendly staff with exceptional service, room was comfy and modern, shower was amazing just what I needed after a soaking day karting, food was excellent and the free breakfast followed up to be amazing too, highly recommended to everyone
Review 105:doors are noisy when they close as there are no handles on them to make closing quieter
Review 106:for us the location was prime reason for booking. it was close to the best parts of the lake district and although very close to the roundabout we were not disturbed by traffic noise. staff were friendly and the breakfasts were well cooked and filling.
Review 107:nothing.
Review 108:the staff were very accommodating in all requests made. they let you know that they were there to look after you and supply the best possible service. food was of the highest quality I will most certainly book into the shepherds hotel on my next visit.
Review 109:Getting a warning note about evidence of smoking in room which certainly did not happen which spoilt our stay Manager said we should not worry about it
Review 110:Helpful staff Location Food
Review 111:staff couldn't do enough to help Had been to family funeral and arrived back after kitchen had closed for evening - yet they still made sandwiches and made us very comfortable.
Review 112:Nothing to not like about the hotel
Review 113:This was my second visit to shepherds hotel and my stay was as the first the first visit I stayed at the hotel for a week to explore the Lake District found it to be very central with good facilities clean rooms great food and friendly staff hence why I chose to stay at the hotel overnight for a second visit thank you
Review 114:Car park looked a bit like a builders yard with large drums of cable. A bit worrying at first wondering where on earth we had booked but on entering the building our fears soon disappeared.
Review 115:Location for accessing the area. Friendly and helpful staff
Review 116:Very noisy.we were located above the main entrance.smoking, mobile phone calls and taxi doors slamming.doubt we will stay again.stopped following weekend at travel lodge.
Review 117:It would be great if we could get the occasional bargain, but prices seem to stay the same! I can't say there is anything I didn't like, maybe a little less rain!!
Review 118:Go to Shepherd Hotel 2 or 3 times a year, and its always very good. Staff are extremely pleasant, the room is ideal and the breakfast is brilliant. We visit relatives, but it is a good venue for sightseeing the north Lakes.
Review 119:Reception closed at 10.00 p.m. and restaurant at 8.00 p.m. Flock of noisy geese resident outside bedroom windows.
Review 120:Good location for access to part of Lake District needed.Excellent parking and near to town.
Review 121:bit of a hard bed and could do with an upgrade
Review 122:not bad for the money and the food in the restaurant was good and you can book one night ( hard to do in the lakes district ) I go back
Review 123:Ease of finding hotel; warm welcome; comfortable bedroom with wifi and generously sized ensuite facilities. Good choice of food at the price for evening meal and a filling breakfast.
Review 124:Rooms had been decorated but not very carefully.Cobwebs in corners, signs of mildew in bathroom.
Review 125:room tidy and plenty of space, bed very large and comfy.
Review 126:The exterior of the hotel looks a little run down when you approach it from he car park. The beds (twin and a bed settee) were a little uncomfortable, but were fine for one night.
Review 127:Location was very convenient. Family room was large and comfortable. Evening meal was really tasty, and very good value - the steak, cooked on volcanic rocks at the table, was melt in the mouth perfect! Shower was great. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very substantial.
Review 128:As we pulled up outside the exterior in desperate need of refresh not great first impression.
Review 129:Good location with a good breakfast help yourself to cereal fruit yoghurt then continental or full english. Rooms good size and base to go explore all of the lakes and coast line too. Great shower with lovely fluffy towels.staff polite and don't pester you.
Review 130:Nothing
Review 131:The staff couldn't do enough for us and Carlos is a massive asset to the Hotel. He laughed and joked with us at breakfast and tried to teach my son some Spanish. Amazing shower too!
Review 132:Put in a room next to a barking dog which from time to time was left alone whilst the owners went out.
Review 133:Staff were brilliant. Rooms big and comfy. Great to come back after a long walk and jump in the bath. Food and service very good indeed.
