Reviews for The Carlton Hotel

Review 1:The room was poor but I expected that due to the cost. However it was a freezing cold January night and the heating packed up sometime during the night and there was no hot water or shower working in my room. Had to wash by boiling a kettle and pouring it into the sink. Appalling that this can be acceptable in a hotel in this day and age. Do yourself a favour and stay somewhere else that has heating and hot water.

Review 2:Staff were reasonably friendly and helpful.

Review 3:First bed was uncomfortable but was transferred to a better room and very comfortable bed very quickly, after I raised my concerns

Review 4:Friendly family - run B&B. Where else could you get a full English breakfast and board for such a low rate? Walking distance to Tescos and Morrisons, the town centre and main bus stop. Great value for money

Review 5:Other side of town from where I wanted to be but was okay.

Review 6:Clean and friendly staff. This hotel was well priced at £35 for the night and it included breakfast and free wifi.

Review 7:I would of preferred Bacon than a Turkey replacement. I understand that The Carlton is a family run business and that from what I believe because of Religious reasons they did not serve Bacon. This was the only disappointing thing

Review 8:Staff Friendly and Polite. Breakfast was superb. Received free upgrade from single to double room! BONUS!

Review 9:Nothing

Review 10:When I got to the hotel they upgraded me to a double room with an en suite. They said that as this was not being used for the night then they were happy for me to have it. Really nice people and nice place to stay. Imran was very polite.

Review 11:Television didn't work, we didn't report it as a problem as we were only there for one night. Very little tissue left on toilet roll and no spare! Sink in the room not in en suite, standing at the sink looking in the mirror you can see all the dust and bits under the bed.

Review 12:Location, parking, breakfast, nice crisp sheets and flexible on in out times.

Review 13:Friendly staff. Nice and clean. Because the owners were Moslem, there was no bacon or pork sausages. I fully respect this, and the breakfast of beef sausages and and beef bacon was actually very tasty.

Review 14:My sister's showroom room was a bit shabby. Her window was jammed shut, so there was quite a bit of condensation. The problem was resolved, however.

Review 15:The welcome and the instant upgrade offered when the receptionist realised we would difficulty with two flights of stairs. Freshly cooked breakfast.

Review 16:The rooms were not clean, the house smelt, the rooms smelt, the bathrooms smelt of stagnant water, I would not recommend this guest house to my worst enemy, people who say this is a good place have very, very low standards.

Review 17:The staff were friendly enough and did there best to help.

Review 18:Took the pictured single ensuite dorm, which provided the basics. Breakfast was according to order, cooked well, served by friendly ladies, including the owner's wife. Admin details handled well by the owner's son. Location is convenient to town.

Review 19:Nothing I did not like! Basically for the price of 4 nights stay, with a great breakfast plus wi-fi very helpful staff and great management! You could not ask for anything else. "Thank you to all at carlton hotel"

Review 20:The staff were all very friendly and helpfull. Was value for money and close enough to walk to most places of interest. Was a nice quiet road too and staff go out of their way to assist you The manager couldn't have been more helpful Lots of tea and coffee in the room with kettle, microwave, hot water and heating!

Review 21:To be honest everything including the strong smell of bleech narrow steep stairs condensation on the windows no heating dirty bathroom shower lack of parking hard beds

Review 22:Leaving to go home and the pub just down the road

Review 23:Very shabby 'hotel' with tired, dated fixtures and fittings. Mould all over the bathroom, with splatters on the walls and toilet seat when we arrived. The bedroom window did not lock and the bed needed to be replaced. Very very poor value for money

Review 24:The shower room and toilet had mould around the bases and smelt mouldy, I had paper falling off the ceiling where there must have been a leak by the window and the carpet was not hovered while I stayed there for 2 days. There was a matt of hair on the floor underneath the sink that was not mine.

Review 25:Very easy to get to the station and the centre of town, breakfast was great and had everything. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and they looked after my luggage for free on my last day so I could make the most of my time.

Review 26:Not much if anything wrong (now) - problem faced by all UK hotels is that in the UK Hotels are expensive by European standards. so people who are used to a three or four star hotel in (say) Germany or Spain for say 40 pounds are bound to be unhappy at paying 59 pounds for what is in essence a B&B in England however good it is.

Review 27:They have decorated and are much improved therefore showing (now) that they value our custom.

Review 28:Nonstop traffic noise. Ancient bed. Fusty linen and cramped bedroom for one person and this was a twin bed room.

Review 29:Microwave, very steep stairs, food, ease of access, good kitchen & reception staff

Review 30:One more time it proves there are special rooms for booking.com customers. Even for £55 for the room with the breakfast, I wouldn't stay there again. I have travelled a lot, but this extra basic room was appalling: old beds looking like they have been gotten from the skip. The bedding was clean. But, guys, honestly! Clean bedding cannot make up for flat, thin and lumpy pillows! Bathroom is uncomfortable to enter with curtain falling off and rotten to the holes window frame. Soap scam, snorts on the shower cubical walls and loads of hair around. Toilet water going down suspiciously slowly. Interestingly, communal bathroom downstairs was looking much better. That's what makes me think of tired old rooms designated to booking.com customers.

Review 31:Location Breakfast a little

Review 32:No problems everything OK

Review 33:Very convenient for the centre of Ipswich and only a stones throw from the football ground which was the purpose of our visit. It looked as though there was a bit of updating going on but it really was pretty good value for the price we paid. Had a bit of a problem with the television but was very quickly sorted by the owner.

Review 34:Room and en suite a bit small, beds somewhat lumpy and uncomfortable. Real downside was the noisy road outside, although it quieted down a little later in the night. Made for a rather disturbed sleep.

Review 35:Friendly welcoming staff, excellent choice at breakfast from full English to continental, as you like.

Review 36:Could have done with a bit of Decorating, but was clean and conforable.

Review 37:The staff were all very friendly and helpfull. Was value for money and close enough to walk to most places of interest. Was a nice quiet road too.

Review 38:Bed and pillows were rather hard

Review 39:Lovely family atmosphere staff very helpful and friendly options of microwave, mini fridge and very close to town.

Review 40:Yes the decor may be dated and the rooms maybe need upgrading, but the hotel in general more than compensates for this

Review 41:Very good location and a proper, cooked breakfast. Very friendly and obliging staff

Review 42:Unreliable showers, kept going freezing cold and staying that way! Loud pump noise next to the bed when the neighbours turned on their tap. Hotel certainly not luxurious but fine for a place to rest your head.

Review 43:Friendly staff, tasty breakfast, convenient early check in

Review 44:I was given basic though I put I had a child so we had to use the toilet across the landing which was difficult during the night. The shelf holding the microwave did not look stable enough and had wear. Decor could do with a touch up.

Review 45:the table in bedroom was worn it was value for the price and the staff were very helpfull the hallway ceiling needed painting the dining room was very nice but the room i was in could do with refurbishment the tv was being replaced so perhaps that is their intention

Review 46:the dining room and the owner and staff were very pleasant room needed updating and hallway ceiling painted

Review 47:A bit noisy, but ok start at midnite, no early breakfast, but fruits provided instead fair enough..

Review 48:Clean room, near to bus station, price is good, will come back ? A week if the room price is right.

Review 49:Not to sure what type of bacon was used for breakfast , it looked like a flat piece of frazzle , but did not taste as good.apart from that ,everything good.

Review 50:Very basic room, in need of a fair bit of upgrading and TLC. The bathroom was basic and poorly maintained.

Review 51:A great breakfast selection, and some very happy/friendly staff serving it up.

Review 52:Room - mattress had seen better days; decor was very tired, espy in the bathroom.

Review 53:Great welcome at reception - couldn't be more helpful. When I complained about the room i was immediately offered a discount - excellent customer service.

Review 54:I have stayed here twice & have booked a third stay for next month. The rooms are good, the breakfasts plentiful & the staff are great. I had a small complaint which was dealt with immediately & with great customer focussed attention.

Review 55:Beds were damaged and very cheap, hence an uncomfortable nights sleep. Bathroom and bedroom very old and tired looking, hole in wall, damaged taps etc. Price charged not what was quoted and receipt never arrived.

Review 56:Friendly staff

Review 57:My room needed a comfortable chair to sit in to watch tv + a coffee table to relax at. The tv needed undating along with the bathroom fittings Both rooms needed deep cleaning. Information about how to use the facilities in the room e.g. accessing the reception & how the tv worked Local information details in the room or reception i.e. taxi numbers, a map of the town, etc. Removal of spare bed to make more room

Review 58:I liked the helpful, attentive & friendly staff. There was a good choice for breakfast including for those of the guest who are vegetarian. En suit bathroom

Review 59:Old blankets instead of duvets, the en-suite was old, shower was over old bath that had no taps.Cracked floor tile. Makeshift shelf with tea making facilities and water tank cupboard doubled as wardrobe.

Review 60:Being able to check in from 11.00 The linen was clean. The breakfast was good

Review 61:no i didn't have a bad experience - just got what i paid for

Review 62:staff were very helpful and considerate parking good good location and easy to find great breakfast

Review 63:The room really needs a good update. It is looking very tired and worn. The shower tray looks very grubby as silicone needs replacing as it is black.

Review 64:The unlimited wifi was a good extra. Having a microwave was helpfu.

Review 65:The breakfast could have been nice but the beef sausage and Turkey bacon was rank.

Review 66:Staff were very friendly and nothing was any trouble.great location to Ipswich Town centre.

Review 67:Bed base was hard, felt it threw the matress. Taps where not tight, the whole thing moved, toilet didn't flush right, had to take the top off. It could just do with some maintenance and a bit of a clean in areas but good non the same

Review 68:Breakfast

Review 69:bathroom mouldy, basin tap hanging off,tv to small, bed very lumpy, decor very poor and this hotel is NOT a 3 star! i would say it is a 1 star and thats being generous.........

Review 70:breakfast

Review 71:The bed in my room badly needed a new mattress; it was very uncomfortable

Review 72:Helpfulness of staff. Proximity to city centre. Great Breakfast. And above all value for money.

Review 73:The rooms really need to be refurbished Little bit noisy, you can hear when your neighbors are coming back and also the cars driving outside. But all in all a good place to stay for 1-2 nights...

Review 74:Staff is very nice!!! English breakfast was good too Room was clean Heater was working very well

Review 75:Bath was mouldy and poor shower. Room very dated and one of the beds was broken.

Review 76:Breakfast was excellent and the bed linen was clean and fresh. I slept like a log.

Review 77:It is not a matter of not liking, but an unpleasant situation. The shower bathroom, it appears that the heating commands do not work, which turns out to be very dangerous for the bath, ie there is a risk of scalding.

Review 78:To be honest I like everything, especially that big work in the hotel!

Review 79:Although the heater was on, I woke up feeling cold. I think the heater was being regulated and for most of the time was turned off. Almost fell sick in the morning!

Review 80:Window wouldn't shut. No duvet, only a brown blanket I wouldn't even give my dog. Heating wouldn't work properly and the room was FILTHY

Review 81:My bed mattress had seen better days but still slept soundly. Hot warm tap needs some attention. Although water was hot it came out of the tap very slowly.

Review 82:Friendly welcome. Bedding clean and crisp. Towels clean and soap also provided. Bedroom cosy and warm. Breakfast adequate.

Review 83:The room interior is old (eg, walls, TV, windows etc) which means the room doesn't look great. In spite of that it was clean and well looked after. I don't think age matters so long as it's been maintained well.

Review 84:Staff were very friendly. Breakfast was amazing - I had a full English, fresh-cooked to my order (not from a buffet.) Wifi had great connection strength. Bed sheets were clean, as was the bathroom.

Review 85:Clearly a budget operation, but perfectly acceptable and a good price for city centre. No bacon or pork sausage for breakfast

Review 86:Very efficient, everything was there, as expected, clean and working.

Review 87:Had to use the kettle to fill bath so took forever. Electric shower was inconsistent going from freezing to scalding every few minutes. A pump or some sort of equipment was noisy throughout the whole night.

Review 88:Gentleman who checked us in was very friendly, polite and helpful.

Review 89:Not clean at all bodily fluids in bed sheet and hair lamp doesn't work bed was uncomfortable no duvet freezing cold at night no staff at reception very narrow stairs I found hard to climb as life long back problems no shampoo or shower gel shower burnt my boyfriend NEVER STAY HERE WANTED MONEY BACK AND THEY WOULDN'T GIVE IT BACK

Review 90:breakfast was the only good thing about the stay.

Review 91:Car parking is very limited. The rear car park is only accessible through a very narrow tunnel suitable only for very slim cars. Hot water ran out mid shower.

Review 92:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent.

Review 93:Very dated

Review 94:The location is ideal if you are going to Ipswich for the match on the train. You are walking distance from Portman Rd and the station. Ok for a one night stay.

Review 95:The staff was absolutely awesome, kind, helpful wherever they could.. The room was clean and had a cosy atmosphere. It is a rather old looking hotel including furnishment.. But everything was really good! Good shower and bathroom, cupboard to put stuff in etc.. I would everyone advise to stay there..! I had a great experience and felt really at home!

Review 96:Room very old and worn. Although sheets and towels were clean, the room was grubby, bed very old, worn and matress lumpy and uncomfortable. Spider web in the bedside lamp and toilet had not been flushed or cleaned after last occupant.

Review 97:Staff very helpful and friendly. Wonderful freshly cooked breakfast - excellent.

Review 98:Very tired property. Threadbare carpets. Stairs to the second floor are ridiculously steep and awkward. Bath and shower curtain grubby and mouldy grouting.

Review 99:Excellent breakfast. Helpful/very pleasant staff. Room lovely and warm. Towels changed daily.

Review 100:Parking on forecourt possibly a bit tight for access as parking bay on busy main road opposite hotel. Although cleanliness could be better (decor needs a lift & mould on mastic in shower) it is certainly not the worst I have visited in this price range.

Review 101:Extremely friendly & helpful host & staff. Ideal location for shopping in the Town Centre. Great choices at breakfast, fresh fruit. fruit juices, cereals, cheese, yoghurt, porridge, cooked english breakfast ( turkey bacon though), toast etc. Tea, coffee or fruit/herb teas. Hospitality offered makes up for other issues at this hotel.

Review 102:the shower was to say the least grotty and telly reception was rubbish, and kept freezing.

Review 103:we were made welcome and the cook was very helpful, friendly and approachable nothing was too much trouble, she also took time with a guest who'd had a very recent bereavement, a lovely lady.

Review 104:The constant sound of a water pump or heating system switching on and off for all of my one night stay. Couple that with a less than comfortable bed doesn't promote a good nights sleep.

Review 105:The staff were nice and so was the breakfast. The free wifi made the stay bearable

Review 106:Peeling wallpaper, very tired decor (not dirty) just falling to bits. And what on earth is "Turkey Bacon" for breakfast ? It wasartificial, plastic and vile. A great pity as the rest of the breakfastand service was excellent. This "hotel" really needs a quick spruce up - it really could do much better in terms of decor. It even has a 1970s purple patterned carpet in the hall. Nostalgia maybe but it just looks terrible. Even contractors staying said it was a bit "tired." Typical Britain - we just don't care do we? They could charge at least 10.00 more per room after a quick makeover; but again, that's Britain.

Review 107:Decent quality - clean, crisp sheets. Not a rip-off if you simply want alovely bed for the night.

Review 108:Parking can be a bit hit and miss when available. Shower was awkward to use and lacked much power.

Review 109:Convenient for town. Provides basic but good accommodation and a good cooked breakfast etc for a reasonable amount. I've been a number of times and have found it to be good each time.

Review 110:Room was dated and windows a little drafty. Breakfast was okay, but would've preferred proper bacon and not sure what we were served. They has also ran out of mushrooms which was a shame. Didn't really like the bedsheets, would've preferred a duvet instead of sheet and blankets.

Review 111:Location not far from Town Center, so walking wasn't a problem and a cab was cheap if you needed one. Staff very pleasant and very helpful. The accomodation suited our needs. Free parking was a good touch.

Review 112:The bathroom was dirty and needed an upgrade. The substantial breakfast was spoilt by missing items - no poached eggs on the first day, no mushrooms on the second day.

Review 113:Could do with coat of paint, but then again we've paid lots more and had lot worse rooms.

Review 114:From the minute we arrived until we left staff were very friendly and helpfull. Breakfast excellent, freshly cooked to order and so much choice. Excellent value for money, wouldn't think twice about staying there again.

Review 115:We really liked the quiet location of the hotel and the fact that it was very close to the shopping street. At night the street was extremely quiet, there was tea and coffee in the room and after a long day of traveling it was a great place to spend the night.

Review 116:Car parking facilities. damaged my car whilst accessing rear car park via a narrow passage. Should have a bold notice saying only suitable for small vehicles. It cost me £200 to repair bodywork damage.

Review 117:Breakfast!!

Review 118:We had a hilarious time reading some of the reviews on here before we stayed, but unanimously agreed that the hotel was ideal for what we wanted. The staff were great, and the only problem we initially had was sorted straight away. Would definitely stay again

Review 119:The room was rather cramped and pokey but it was clean. The hotel could probably do with a little refurbishment.

Review 120:The staff were very friendly and put themselves out to help you. The breakfast was good and freshly cooked.

Review 121:It was a bit ruff round the edges but the staff were fantastic.the rooms were clean and comfy and the breakfast was first class.thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

Review 122:The shower/bathroom could be better it was dated the breakfast can be improved as I couldn't eat it

Review 123:It was in the right place close to town Center

Review 124:Oh dear. Wants a lot of money spent on it. Bed hard but I slept well. A hundred or so pounds on renewing skirtings, improving bathroom tiling seals, more professional furnishings would make a world of difference.

Review 125:Staff very helpful. Cleanliness good. Breakfast very good. Access to town excellent, just a short walk. Shower good, sink in room poor.

Review 126:stay was good.the staff was soft spoken. the breakfast was good with many options. Overallthe hotel is located near to city centre so its proximity to it makes it good for guests.

Review 127:Some areas a bit tatty, but was undergoing refurbishment while I was there and for the price it was great. Facilities in room were very clean, but maybe the whole room wasn't as completely spotless as a pricier hotel (dust in a couple of corners).

Review 128:Central location, easy walking to shops, historic buildings, and park. Excellent person on front desk, welcoming and helpful. Presents itself as a budget hotel, which it is, but great value for the money. Would be hard to find the same quality for the price

Review 129:No dislikes really - it was what I expected for the money I paid.

Review 130:Our welcome was superb - such a genuine, kind man. The fact that we could leave the car and luggage there after we checked out.

Review 131:Rooms a tad dated but work was being carried out to update while I was there (did not disturb us either), and the breakfast was nice, but perhaps a little cheap.

Review 132:Very friendly and helpful staff. Two supermarket local shops within three mins walk, a lovely pub five mins up the road with good food, rooms clean and comfy.

Review 133:The bathroom is tired and dirty and flies were every where! Slap sime paint will do the bathroom walls nicely.

Review 134:Price isn't bad and i guess you get for what you paid for.

Review 135:The room was very cold and couldn't warm it up easily, and the walls were quite thin. The shower was a little grubby but general wear and tear I guess. Wouldn't of stayed longer than one night.

Review 136:It was well placed and not far from Central Ipswich. It was cheap and cheerful. Had tea/coffee making facilities and free wifi! Bonus! Ensuite includes shower. And breakfast comes included (though I didn't have time to take that advantage) simple, cheap and good for a one night stop.
