Reviews for Cumbria Grand Hotel
Review 1:Poor quality room for the price. Tiles cracked in the bathroom, flacking paint and wall paper. Poor quality duvet covers. Tea and coffee wasn't refreshed. Dirt in the bathroom in Bath and on tiles. Warn carpets and not clean under bed. Furniture was warn, limited channells on the TV. The was little to do in the surrounding areas very few shops and walks etc. With very limited facilities on site.
Review 2:Nice friendly staff
Review 3:Due to the bad weather the fire alarm going off at 7 am
Review 4:We had a good meal in the hotel bar and we listened for a little while to the abba tribute girls they were good
Review 5:We enjoyed a fantastic weekend within the hotel the bar the staff were very friendly and helpful we would definitely recommend and return again for another visit
Review 6:It was too dark around the hotel, well for Halloween is fine, but no decorations then. Free WiFi in bar and lounge area only, cannot catch any 3G in the room. Rooms are small and dark but cosy. Building is very old and need to be decorated urgently. Pillows were too hard. Never had this problem before. Any noises from other rooms you can hear, not loud but still no isolation.
Review 7:We liked how castle look (really look like a castle for me), like the surroundings - sea view (unfortunately was foggy, so not much to see). Quality shower gel and hand soap were provided. I love love love food! Food was local produce buffet style. You can have cereals, oat porridge with fruits, or local yogurt or milk, and have a choice of warm food - beans, sausages, potatoes patties, pancakes. I love that real taste of the food! Hotel stuff was great as well: caring and friendly.
Review 8:The lift we used to get to the room had an extremely slow door - didn't see stairs up to our floor.
Review 9:Friendly welcome from staff and nice location. Breakfast included was nice with a good view.
Review 10:The Room was fantastic, upgraded to a four poster bed for an extra £5 prior to my stay. We also received a hamper with alsorts such as dressing gowns, wine, crisps etc
Review 11:Hotels needs some modernising, the dining room looks a bit like a school canteen and doesn't set the right tone for the lovely food
Review 12:Staff were very helpful, room was lovely and very clean and food was beautiful.
Review 13:We had friends staying at the same hotel, we would have liked to sit together at meal times if we were dining at the same time but this appeared too difficult. We could only sit together all the time or join the coach parties. It seemed impossible to move two tables together.
Review 14:We liked the location and views. The room was comfortable and clean. The bar area was well divided so we could do quietly away from the coach parties when we wanted to.
Review 15:The tables in the restaurant are as bad as student union tables in University.
Review 16:We came for a christening and the hotel was in the right place. The views are magnificent and there is plenty of parking Overall the value for money was good and the a la carte menu choice very good.
Review 17:Very offhand barman.Bar meal not value for money. Stressed staff at breakfast. Mobile phone call after we left to say we hadn't paid for a carvery meal which, in fact, we hadn't even had !!!!
Review 18:Warm,clean and tidy. Stunning views. Excellent breakfast.
Review 19:Receptionist wouldn't / couldn't ring us a taxi? Told us to ring from the room. Tired bedrooms to be expected for the price of room and size of hotel.
Review 20:Lovely setting, grand old building and lovely dining room. Good breakfast.
Review 21:Cab service is almost non-existent, so travel is limited to the immediate area.
Review 22:One of our group left her cell phone plugged into the wall when we checked out. We didn't know it until Mark showed up at the train station to return it to her - Amazing! And we shared a family suite, which was quite spacious. Enjoyed our stay very much.
Review 23:Disappointed with our restaurant dinner as, for example, we were supplied with only one menu (as were all other diners) and, in our case, when ordering our meal we requested wine and were advised the wine waiter would be with us shortly, but he never appeared.
Review 24:We felt very much at home in the hotel and enjoyed the entertainment.
Review 25:Normally the staff are excellent but think this time they may have been a little stretched with a full house. If a group of you want to sit together to eat, it shouldn't be too difficult to move a table or as you were informed well in advance to do it before hand. Not rocket science and didn't like being told by the waiter that regardless of what the duty Manager had said, he wasn't in the dining room!
Review 26:We are fairly regular visitors to the Grand and this time took along 3 friends who also had an excellent time. Its the first time we have stayed when it was so full, so we are pleased at the extra trade for you and also at the extra people to chat to.
Review 27:Staff were very friendly & helpful. We arrived just before the bar food stopped serving and the receptionist rang the restaurant to inform them we would be ordering food - this was very caring as we had had a long journey with a work colleague
Review 28:Lifts are very slow. Rooms are very dated but in keeping with the building. Entertainment wasnt so entertaining but wasnt important to us.
Review 29:We had an amazing 2day break away here. Views are lovely, the grounds are well kept, food is great and staff are friendly and helpful.
Review 30:The Staff (chamber maids excluded who all had a smile) were awful, bossy, never a smile, 'thank you' or anything. The breakfast was cold and of poor quality.
Review 31:Fantastic old building with wonderful function rooms, albeit faded.
Review 32:The overall food experience in the hotel wasn't great but there are some lovely pubs and restaurants nearby so I wasn't limited to just the hotel.
Review 33:The welcome, the help, and how the staff accommodated for me and my child and my dog, excellent customer service.
Review 34:At a charge of £142 per night the condition of room no. 227 is a disgrace. Wallpaper peeling from walls, paper peeling from ceiling, damp patch on bedroom ceiling, bad patch on en-suite ceiling.
Review 35:The efficiency with which the manager (James) handled my complaint to him..An extremely pleasant person who in my opinion can only be good for your organisation.
Review 36:This is a Victorian Building, and has faded a little. They are doing a programe of refurbishments, but as it is a very large building, this will take time and money to complete. It suited us. Bar food was very good, showed the chef had taken care . Breakfast was plentiful and very good. All the staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 37:Didn't like anything ,I'm no snob but the rooms smelt damp ,they were unclean we had to change our first room cause it wasn't fit for a dog the second room wasn't much better had we not got a wedding to go to we would of gone home .
Review 38:Location
Review 39:We used a sat nav , and used the first enterance on left. This was a dirt road, and i was terrified , we had to reverse and drive back down, while people in the Hotel watched, and found it very funny watching me be so upset. Think the Hotel should make it a priority to block off this enterance, and make it clear to all that the next turning on the right is the one that leads to the enterance of the Hotel. This is really important and should be implemented ASAP
Review 40:The bar , and eating area was lovley, staff really kind , and attentive. The food was excellent.
Review 41:It was like being in a combination of The Shining and Benidorm. Totally unacceptable to charge in the region of £200 for a pokey room which hasn't been decorated since the 1970`s. The bathroom was awful. I was most upset for the young couple in the room next door who had saved up to go away for a special treat for her birthday and ended up here....they assumed that it would be a 5 star luxury based on the price they'd paid and had been totally let down. Had paid the same price for a room at L'Enclume the previous night which was palatial, spacious, luxurious, clean, modern etc
Review 42:Location and view from window.
Review 43:we counted 7 cobwebs in the room, and did not feel the evening meal was good value for money
Review 44:The staff were really pleasant and very helpful . the grounds of the hotel were lovely, the views from the dining room were spectacular
Review 45:One large greasy haired staff member who had a face on her when serving breakfast. Breakfast was greasy. Lift took 3 minutes to get up to room. No stairs except emergency stairs. Hallways looked like something from the film "The Shining" Very dated. No wifi except at reception. Glass had lipstick stain on. Breakfast supplies not refreshed. On day 1 had the last of the strawberry jam- None put out on day 2.
Review 46:bedroom and balcony was nice. Glad they had gaming facilities- table tennis and pool. Views nice
Review 47:A very quiet location within walking distance of the station- walk along the promenade and over the railway bridge and it takes you out opposite the hotel drive.
Review 48:We stayed in the 3rd floor but the lift was extremely slow. If we'd stayed longer than our 1 night this would have become extremely annoying.
Review 49:There was nothing terrible about our stay but nothing wowed us either.
Review 50:Worn and tired room
Review 51:Beautiful settings and a beautiful hotel. Room was worn and tatty but I know they are slowly upgrading the rooms. The breakfast was amazing and staff lovely. Would definitely recommend and return.
Review 52:The hotel is a little tired and dated but there are glimpses of its past glories. The management say there is rolling programme of refurbishment.
Review 53:The position and views along with the extensive grounds. The room was large and had a balcony overlooking Morecambe Bay. Ideal base for exploring the Southern Lake district.
Review 54:The menu was unimaginative and did not tempt us, so we ate out.
Review 55:The historical parts of the hotel - architecture and fittings (could make more of these). The garden and grounds were very pleasant, though could do with just a bit more maintenance. Grange itself is a delightful little town, and the opportunity for really interesting walks in the area suited us down to the ground, as did all the friendly cafes and restaurants .
Review 56:The quality of the food was average and the breakfast was poor in that the toast was barely warm and pots of tea and coffee were not hot either. The buffet breakfast selection was variable in quality. Bacon and sausage were ok but scrambled eggs had no flavour (even when seasoning was added) and hash brown and potato scones also lacked flavour. I think the food could be improved upon greatly.
Review 57:I liked the location of the hotel overlooking the Bay and some refurbishment was taking place which will improve the overall ambience and appearance of the hotel further.
Review 58:Carpets dirty and wasted, especially in the corridors. Painting of the ceiling of my bathroom falling down. Poor quality and variety of food, both in dinner and in breakfast. No tablecloth on tables, etc.
Review 59:Nothing was specially enjoyable
Review 60:The food we had at the bar was so bad and for the price it was a joke the staff Bearley smiled or spoke we did get a refund and a round of drinks there was no entertainment. For the price of the room it wasn't worth it
Review 61:The grounds and the hotel itself is beautiful the reseptionist was very welcoming big smile
Review 62:The service for dinner was rather slow although the restaurant was far from being full.
Review 63:The hotel is set in very picturesque surroundings with lovely gardens.
Review 64:Bathroom small & very strong odour of dirty cleaning cloth / shower curtain. Curtain linings were torn, should have been repaired/changed before they got to this state. Booked a superior room, but not what I expected. On the plus side the room was clean & decently furnished, but very small. The smell in the bathroom was very unpleasant. Staff tried to improve it but to little effect.
Review 65:Lovely view from the bedroom over the Estuary to the hills beyond - once you overlooked the scrub land immediately beneath the bedroom balcony.
Review 66:I would expect a superior double room with seaview to be superior and include more than I got will not be staying or recommending this hotel and I stay in alot of hotels I got a bigger room for less money in a travel lodge, decor is outdated and lift was so slow it's quicker to walk
Review 67:The view but if that's what I am paying for i would book somewhere else
Review 68:Found out some people staying had payed less than half of what we paid for the same rooms? Charged different prices at the bar by different staff as much as £3.30 difference?
Review 69:View from room was great, room itself was quite nice and the breakfast was good
Review 70:Hotel carpark was terrible, un surfaced unless you parked right in front, massive pot holes and was flooded when we arrived. Rooms are a little outdated. Dinner experience wasn't great, meals were late and when dining with a 2 year old this is poor especially when you are the only people there. Attended dinner as early as possible to restrict disruption to other diners, however meals took an hour to arrive and we were the first to order. Our son was restless at this stage and we were not allowed to take the meals to our room. Restaurant staff were not attentive to our needs. There were 30 pieces of cutlery on the table which should have been removed so our son didn't play with it. Wine glasses should have been taken away. Until I told a staff (8 of who were standing not doing anything as it was empty) did they finally do something. Lead restaurant manager was good though. My meal (lamb) was over cooked but the steak was great. Surrounding areas didn't have too many restaurant options.
Review 71:Hotel surrounding and location are great for walks and exploring. Good breakfast at the hotel and fast check-in and check-out.
Review 72:value for money £166.25 was probable about £66.25 too much even considering the races were on in Cartmel
Review 73:Room has obviously recently been renovated and although small was clean and adequate
Review 74:The hospitality in the bar and restaurant was poor. Available meal options NOT explained. Interior Decoration was extremely tired and dated. We expected more for our money.
Review 75:The surrounding gardens and scenic views.
Review 76:Wifi should be hotel wide and no fridges in rooms or fans as the rooms can be warm no hot food in rooms
Review 77:The hotel was situated perfectly staff were exceptional breakfast was great would visit again as this was our second visit
Review 78:The two double rooms with a sea view where in need of some maintenance but other than that where clean and tidy.
Review 79:I thought the disco on the Saturday night was great the grandchildren had a whale of a time on the dance floor.
Review 80:Room and bathroom decor was jaded. No WiFi in room. It said toiletries provided but there was no shower or bath gel, luckily we had brought our own. Dining area had tables very close together and didn't feel very personal.
Review 81:Room was a good size. Excellent view from the room and nice grounds for a stroll.
Review 82:I booked a superior double room with a sea view as a treat for myself whilst working nearby. They put me in a twin room with threadbare carpets, stained sheets and a dripping toilet. I was told I couldn't be moved and as my lift had left I had to stay there but after a very poor night I left early without breakfast. Awful experience, waste of money and would never stay again.
Review 83:Not Wi-Fi friendly - only available in main area
Review 84:Lovely old country hotel in quaint little village of Grange-over-Sands....easy walk from train and bus stations .....helpful staff....
Review 85:First time I've ever written a review but compelled to because it was awful. Surly receptionist - unhelpful. Couldn't even ring me s taxi. Person in front of me paid half what I did and had dinner thrown in (food was basic and overpriced). Pillow had lots of previous guests hair still on it! Staff arguing at breakfast was entertaining. Wifi only in bar and poor. Staff don't care. It's a coach trip hotel for pensioners not what it purports to be.
Review 86:Close to railway station
Review 87:Gosh this needs refurbishing. Potential is huge but it's a long way off - felt like an institution not a hotel. It was soulless. Staff did not look like they were enjoying themselves.
Review 88:Large self service breakfast (if of a medium quality). Bed was comfy. It has many rooms so had space for the last moment booking - the only place with space!
Review 89:Wifi only available in bar/lobby and I could not get it to connect
Review 90:Very friendly staff and fellow guests. Great setting overlooking Morecambe Bay. Convenient for Grange, Cartmel and the Lakes.
Review 91:Overpriced Shabby looking decor Window View in restaurant is reseverd during breakfast time?? Are you kidding? Are you living in 18th century? No Wi-fi in rooms and unusable in restaurant Cold response by some staff
Review 92:The rooms are good size
Review 93:Over cooked food. Very noisy in dining room as wedding on and band was loud. In dire need of refurbishment
Review 94:Bed was clean but decor was very outdated. Breakfast was good
Review 95:I found the free wifi in the lounge to be very poor indeed. Two other people were on iPads in the evening and the wifi was very slow with the 3 of us on it, yet speeded up dramatically when the other 2 people left, so clearly has very limited capacity. Was also non existant in the morning. I also had no mobile signal of any description in my room, so poor for this day and age.
Review 96:I thought the room I had was very good, especially considering the price I paid, and was spotlessly clean. The bar meal I enjoyed was also very good, as was the breakfast generally and the hotel staff could not have been more welcoming and helpful. I also, as a dog lover, liked it that the hotel allowed dogs in which allowed me to meet a gorgeous labradoodle and her owner.
Review 97:the lobby is terrible (smeely, no appeal...) the overall facilities need some refreshing and repair... The staff is nice but not well trained to a hotel standard... The restaurant is... terrible (expect if you like very average buffet ).
Review 98:The hotel location is nice, nice sea view, nice property. Our room was nice with a sea view
Review 99:It's a shame wi fi isn't available in the bedrooms.
Review 100:Staff were very helpful and friendly. Bar meals were tasty and served well. Breakfast was plentiful - nice to have a better quality sausage too. The grounds of this hotel are lovely and perfect if you have a dog.
Review 101:Reception staff were absolutely uninterested, lacking in manners and generally unprofessional. Not once did I find them helpful, courteous or warm. Just awful. Sane can be said for a young man working behind the bar. No please or thank yous. No warmth or smiles. Plain rude
Review 102:The breakfast staff and the breakfast itself was great. Room clean and very quiet. Perfect for us. Scottish barman was a great help and lovely to us, very attentive.
Review 103:Allocating dining room tables for the duration of stay is outmoded. Some of our party had leak to bedroom ceiling caused by a guest showering in a room above , apology not forthcoming just an explanation of plumbing which is not for guests to worry about. Internet poor , hope will be factored in to future renovations.
Review 104:Lovely location, we had 3 rooms 2 with magnificent sea views. Nice staff. Beautiful builing obviously under a renovation programme.
Review 105:I liked everything about the Cumbria Grand and the Manager (Mark) and his team have rejuvenated this hotel since his arrival, Well done.
Review 106:The Hotel staffs attention to your needs are first class. Food is excellent.
Review 107:not all room facilities were in working order, although great period features, it needs updating, some updates could have been more sympathetically
Review 108:great staff and great breakfast.
Review 109:So big and impersonal. One or two nice Polish staff at breakfast but awful atmosphere throughout because of its size and the number of people it is catering for. Not particularly clean and rather shabby.
Review 110:Better sign posting from the main road, needed more staff at breakfast, some of the decor a little bit tired looking
Review 111:Building and grounds were very nice, staff exceptional, very clean hotel..
Review 112:The gentleman who seats people for the morning breakfast was not pleasant in his answer to my question. I asked if we could have a window table please and he replied no as we were not part of the wedding guests! As we had a small baby -the table he gave us was so crammed and very little space to move. Also, random peacock poo outside.
Review 113:WiFi virtually impossible to connect to. Apparently staff had phoned in sick so breakfast was a total shambles with one girl not understanding the word 'cutlery'. Was told there would be a considerable wait for bar meals as a wedding was apparently taking priority. Lift takes about 20 minutes to appear and can only take 4 people at a time. Bar prices are a premium and it seems prices are made up on the spot as 8 shots of Sambuca only cost £35 in a parallel universe.
Review 114:Lovely grounds.
Review 115:Hotel says it is close to the station, it is about a 10 minute walk to drive to the hotel. This is a long inclined lane which has no lights at all. This is difficult for travellers who have arrived by train.
Review 116:Room had a nice view.
Review 117:Faulty Television on arrival - but they did their best to sort it
Review 118:Duty Manager (James) was excellent did his best, and moved us to a better room. all the staff in all departments were excetionally friendly and helpful
Review 119:This was the worst front desk I ever seen, the lady when we were checking out was very unprofessional. I asked for a taxi and she said we don't that, she passed me a little paper with taxi companies number and said ask for your self, because the hotel don't provide this service!!
Review 120:The staff in the restaurant were trying to help, despite the lack of experience they have.
Review 121:Had to ask for another TV, (as I had never seen such a small TV like that before and it didn't work) - was brought a small flat screen TV quite quickly. The hotel could really do with a revamp, as she is no longer very "grand".
Review 122:The view
Review 123:Unfortunately the Bar didn't sell Cask Beers. This meant not eating at the hotel but having to go into Grange to eat and drink.
Review 124:Comfortable clean quite room. Pleasant staff. Beautiful setting.
Review 125:The room we had when we first came was close to where the staff resided and they were very noisy. The people to clean the room knocked on our door before 9 o'clock when we weren't checking out til the next day. The beds were hard and uncomfortable. They were sparse toiletries and drinks.
Review 126:The location is beautiful as are the grounds and view.
Review 127:car parking was horrendous ...had to park several hundered yards from hotel and weather was raining cats and dogs
Review 128:superb position , lovely character to rooms and hotel in general . super views and well looked after throughout our stay
Review 129:we booked a Sea view double room but we were given with room at ground floor from where we can just see the trees outside not the sea..very badly disappointed with the room facilities..heater was not working.
Review 130:Food in restaurant was good
Review 131:We booked a standard twin room, but the room was very very poor, it was shabby and wallpaper was hanging off in places. We were stuck in a ground floor room looking out onto the car park, the trouser press didn't work either. We did ask to be moved but no other rooms available. I would have happily paid £60-£75 for the room but we were charged an extortionate £133 and an extra £10 for our dog. Overall we will definitely not be returning to the Grand Cumbria v
Review 132:The breakfast and the hotel grounds were both very nice, we travelled with our dog so handy to have the woodland area to just nip out with the dog.
Review 133:Bath needs an upgrade bit yellow around the sides and bathmat didnt look welcoming to have a shower or bath in.
Review 134:Lovely view from our room, comfru bedding.
Review 135:Not applicable
Review 136:Excellent service.fantastic view from room.very comfy bed.room lovely and clean.free WiFi.large well kept gardens and grounds.food excellent and plenty of it.will be returning again.not
Review 137:Arrived at hotel at 2.30 from Leicestershire, and a coach party arrived 2.40. We ALL had to wait until 3.00 to check in as housekeeping do not hand over rooms until then.
Review 138:The room we had booked was a family room, very spacious and comfortable. 15 mins walk from railway station. Good links to Cark for Cartmel Racecourse
Review 139:The matresses were extremely hard, lumpy and uncomfortable. (twin beds). The en-suite was large with good bath and shower but floor unclean and no ventilation as the sash window chords were broken.
Review 140:Breakfast and evening meal good and latter good value. The room was satisfactory.
Review 141:Some of the bar food was not up to standard.
Review 142:the atmosphere was very relaxing, found the whole experience good, it could definitely do with more disabled parking and more rooms geared to people with walking problems.
