Reviews for White Hart Hotel
Review 1:There was hardly anything to dislike!! The man who greeted us was friendly but not intrusive, took us to the room and was kind to help with bags. They hotel also let us check out late at 12 without paying extra which is a nice touch, and unlike the corporate hotels who often charge for this. The only tiny complaint was the man at reception in the morning was a bit grumpy and didn't say goodbye to us, which would've been a nice end to the stay. Would recommend staff made sure there was as nice a farewell as the welcome!
Review 2:We stayed in the superior double room with the 4 poster bed and it was the most comfortable night sleep I've ever had at a hotel or bnb in the U.K.! The bathroom was gorgeous and had an incredible shower and bath! The hotel is so quaint and you can tell its history from the original Tudor windows and sloping floors. The room was nicely peaceful being at the back of the property off the road, and literally opposite the cathedral, perfect location for seeing St. Albans. Can't fault this place!
Review 3:Surly manager dude on reception. If you want a pub stay with a decent pub, don't bother. The pub sucks.
Review 4:Lovely room, really well kept and clean. Rather bizarre situation with sink in the bedroom rather than in the bathroom/shower, but what the hey.
Review 5:Shower needed an upgrade. Rooms were a little tired in decor.
Review 6:Good family accommodation with two separate rooms - good with 3 children and space for the dog cage
Review 7:The room was unrenovated for seemingly decades. Far from being a tudor room of historical interest, it was like a college dorm from the 1960's. The curtains didn't block the light from the car park, the beds were uncomfortable and the bathroom was not clean enough for a decent hotel. The phone from the room didn't work. The owner was bossy and rude.
Review 8:The breakfast was good.
Review 9:We were made very welcome from the start of our stay. Dinner was excellent and on the particular night we stayed there was a pianist in the bar, just brilliant.
Review 10:Parking is limited. Bed sheet had a stain on it (I assume it was a permanent stain rather than something fresher). The iron in the room (#5) had been used by a predecessor to iron something that melted - when I tried to iron a shirt, this residue ended up on my shirt, which I hope is not ruined. The single room I had was very small. No view. 2 nights were enough.
Review 11:This is an olde world establishment - the building feels like it has seen a lot of interesting history. The hotel is quiet at night despite being a bustling pub. Breakfasts are very good (and you have plenty of choice).
Review 12:Heating was on full before we arrived at 7, rather warm first night, second night with windows open a lot of noise outside but that was expected with central location
Review 13:Great location, bar open late, friendly bar and breakfast staff
Review 14:The room was quite noisy but from external factors.
Review 15:The staff were wonderfully helpful and friendly. The location was perfect. I loved the character of the place. It was clean, warm and reasonably comfortable.
Review 16:Building is old but décor is tatty and needs doing up. Bar closes at midnight; acoustics are rubbish so music and talk kept me awake with work next morning. Noisy patrons leaving 0030 woke me up again. Bed was in the top 5 most uncomfortable I have ever slept in. Never again.
Review 17:Close to work. Vacancies.
Review 18:Could have made a bit more milage re the age / history of the place. Bedroom decor OK, but a bit "same same" as more modern hotels-whould have used stuff with a bit more character in keeping with the age & history of the Hotel.
Review 19:Old world charm and good value. Staff and owner nice and good breakfast. Free parking for guests. Will stay there again when on business.
Review 20:A fabulous hotel! I chose it for it's character and location and was not dissapointed! The staff were extremely friendly and accomodating to our requests....woyld definately go again.
Review 21:Reception staff lacked enthusiasm. My room was dusty, the plug in the sink did not retain water, ( apparently this is the norm!!). When having breakfast, the waitress went from serving me, again very unenthusiastically, to suddenly using both a hygienic cleaner on next table, to spraying polish.
Review 22:The bed was very comfortable.
Review 23:Great Location in the middle of St. Albans. Very clean and staff were helpful. We went to HP Warner brothers studios and this old Tudor building fitted in with the weekend experience.
Review 24:We stayed in No 15, a bit too much light comes in via the window in the morning. Some traffic noise. Wifi is weak in room but ok in the bar.
Review 25:Location is ideal for a stop in Saint Albans, on one of the main streets and not far from both train stations. Piano man on Friday night at the bar and friendly staff.
Review 26:Just slightly a bit too cold!
Review 27:Location, style of hotel, history, size of room, the four poster bed was very comfortable, wifi was good, bathroom was fantastic, great decoration, television worked perfectly, enough towels in the bathroom, information in the room was helpful, tea making facilities, plugs by the bed, quiet location even though on the high street, easy walk to restaurants and shops, free parking for guests.
Review 28:We stayed in a family room, which was a good size, clean and comfortable. We ate in the restaurant and the food was good quality. We were not disturbed at all by the pub trade in the evening and overnight
Review 29:Brilliant location just by the Cathedral. Breakfast and dinner really nice. Staff very friendly and helpful. Were given an upgrade. Piano played in the bar at night so very relaxing. Historical building.
Review 30:I stayed in room 2 which had a very small ensuite so couldn't have a proper wet shave.
Review 31:Love the old building. There is a cosy bar. No problem parking at the hotel.
Review 32:Right on the main road which is quite busy!
Review 33:Really close to shops and centre of St Albans, right opposite beautiful Cathedral. Gorgeous old building with rooms full of character.
Review 34:We loved our attractive family room, lots of space and a lovely bathroom. Plenty of toiletries, tea, coffee, biscuits, water and bath robes all supplied. Staff very helpful and friendly and breakfast excellent.
Review 35:Our shower was directly in the room ie bedroom into shower no privacy!!Straight on to carpet Room cold ,no way of putting heating on, left same day couldn't stay there
Review 36:Staff were helpful Perfect location
Review 37:A bit untidy behind reception, staff swearing in the kitchen can be heard in reception, staff standing gossiping in reception when with a bit of organisation they could be tidying up or just not hanging around, cleaning fluids and clothes laying about forgotten.
Review 38:Great building, wonderful atmosphere, friendly helpful staff. Bathroom in our room was nice. Room well decorated and furniture of good quality.
Review 39:Really loved the place felt homely staff very nice and rooms were very comfy. Sadly we only had one nights visit as so busy but would love to return again one day. the history in the building is wonderful and open to your own views it is haunted !! but nothing bothers us ! we will be back again for another stay.
Review 40:The green condom hanging from the table in the bedroom The amount of dust behind the table and bed The overdone sausages
Review 41:Nice modern bathroom clean but compact
Review 42:In the attic room you had to be 9ft to look out of the window but 5ft to walk through the corridor this, was all part of the charm though.
Review 43:Very quaint with lots of history, Staff very friendly.
Review 44:It is a very old building, so stairs and narrow rickety passages are to be expected.
Review 45:I liked the location and the very comfortable bed. But the bedroom lighting was poor, and the décor was tired.
Review 46:The person behind reception. Made it awkward and tried to tell us it was our fault we hadn't phoned to tell them we had booked online with two dogs. Maybe they should check the bookings when they are made rather than when people turn up. A lot of exhaling of air and then he did 'did us a favour' by putting us in the cottage. Bed was ok. Room and bathroom need some tlc.
Review 47:Pub was nice, good food, friendly staff. Location was perfect. Car park was ideal.
Review 48:Sofa bed mattress rather thin
Review 49:Staff friendly and helpful. Good breakfast Most of the family beds very comfortable except the sofa bed Parking available
Review 50:Had a few noisy nights. Saturday had a disco that went on forever, also lady's logo near our room, and chattering women all night. Sunday woken by fire alarm, which quickly went off, but then kept awake by noisy traffic. Very busy road outside our window. Nice view though.
Review 51:In nice part of St. Albans near cathedral. Handy for parks in which to walk our dog.
Review 52:Breakfast was a shambles. The table settings were the wrong way round and we had to ask for napkins, spoons, salt and pepper. Pancakes were off the menu both days and there was no fruit garnish on the French toast as described. When this was pointed out we were told we could get it ourselves "Whatever"
Review 53:We liked the period property with its old world charm and the modern fittings in the bathroom (not the bedroom) especially the power shower.
Review 54:Excellent breakfast. Old world charm with modern facilities. Free on site parking for guests. Very close to centre of town. Friendly staff offering help with luggage on narrow staircase.
Review 55:Had a musty odour in the bathroom that was quite noticeable.
Review 56:This hotel has character! Our family room had really sloping floors but was a good size. Beds were comfortable. Loved the duvets. Breakfast was good, too.
Review 57:Only mirror in bedroom was on back of door and its height meant you had to kneel up to use it. Very uncomfortable for any length of time and anyone coming in to room from bathroom would hit you with door. Uneven floor meant bed was on a slope and very uncomfortable. Although the floor is part of the hotel's character, attempts could be made to prop the bed up on one side so that it is level.
Review 58:Friendly staff. Having a 4 poster bed and separate bathroom- very unexpected.
Review 59:Staff were incredibly rude and obviously didn't care. The woman serving breakfast really could do with some training. Breakfast was a fairly ok full english (other hot choices available), orange juice only, and stale toast. The room was not at all as advertised - it looked like a bad carboot sale with lots of furniture shoved randomly around the room. Having paid extra for a deluxe double room I expected at least a proper double bed, with a nice room, and a nice bath. The bed was two singles pushed together, the bath was shower over bath (and looked unclean), and the room was overall depressing.
Review 60:Location was good
Review 61:The staff were rude, the bedroom door was too small to walk through, the floor sloped so much that items rolled off the tables inside, the bathroom wasn't big enough to walk into, the windows didn't close and the road noise was a nuisance.
Review 62:Nothing.
Review 63:That the floor was so uneven that even a coffee cup could not stay on a table without sliding off. Wifi was weak in the room. Should be classified as a bed and breakfast and not a hotel in my opinion.
Review 64:Bedrooms tired need update some traces black mold in bathroom
Review 65:V good vfm God central location Surprisingly good food Good wide bath & lots of hot water Fascinating old building Free parking o/n off street Good big family room would sleep 6
Review 66:Great place to stay full of character with it being a very old building. Did see any of the ghosts which visit at times. Friendly staff happy to give info of surrounding area. Stayed in room 4 was lovely, bathroom was fab. Huge comfortable bed, fluffy pillows and duvet was great quality.
Review 67:Check in staff were unfriendly verging on rude. Booked last minute and were allocated Room 5 and 1. Shower tiny fan noisy and rooms too hot making for an uncomfortable night sleep. Carpets threadbare on landing . In room 5 sink in the bedroom as didn't fit in the bathroom. Some areas of the hotel looked quite tired and in need of updating.
Review 68:Fantastic location quirky historic building bar staff very friendly and professional. Fantastic dining area. Loved the sinks in the ladies
Review 69:Although staying for only one night, I needed to park for a second day, and had to pay an additional charge.
Review 70:Convenience to Cathedral, and parking facility.
Review 71:The room was a little tired with the carpet a little thin in areas and we also found some dust in places, could have been a little cleaner, but was OK for one night.
Review 72:We stayed in the family room which was very big and contained a double bed and 3 single beds, a large flat screen TV and comfortable bathroom and amenities. The room was very spacious and kept in character of the inn. We stayed for both the evening meal and breakfast both of which were fabulous.
Review 73:Decor is tired. We stayed in a family room on the very top floor and it was hot despite the provision of a fan. The hotel is on a main road.
Review 74:Location was great, central St Albans, near Cathedral, Verulanium etc, and free private parking.
Review 75:This is a traditional coaching inn property. None of the floors are level and you need to watch out for low ceilings upstairs. Full of character and a four poster bed in our room. Comfortable and quirky in a great central position for the Abbey.
Review 76:Beds way too soft, door frames very low resorting in my husband bumping head taking case down narrow stairway. Travelling with a young child we booked a family room which was the farthest away room up a lot of stairs. It had plenty of space though.
Review 77:Great Location and lovely quaint establishment full of character.
Review 78:Bathroom had a narrow sink with a ledge directly above it, making it hard not to decorate the floor when brushing teeth &c! Pelmet needed some TLC.
Review 79:The location, the period charm of the building, helpful staff. Mostly excellent food in restaurant.
Review 80:The bathroom facilities were poor...There should never be a shower actally in the sleeping area...especially in a twin room.
Review 81:The location was excellent
Review 82:There was no hair dryer. The room was dusty everywhere and the shower head wasn't working. The staff at the reception wasn't great either
Review 83:The location is great
Review 84:Nothing to dislike.
Review 85:The hotel is in a great situation. Very handy for the cathedral and town centre. It's a beautiful building with loads of character. The room was gorgeous, we had a 4 poster bed. The breakfast was excellent!
Review 86:Staying at the White Hart was stepping back into history. Unlike some very old inns which have been modernized into anonymity, this one retains great character (an amazingly sloping floor!), while being clean and comfortable. Dinner was quite fine. Since breakfast was not included in our rate and we are small eaters, we loved breakfast at the Cafe Rouge nearly next door. The Cathedral (the purpose of our visit) is directly across the street!
Review 87:The built in en-suite was serviceable but badly executed building-wise (Gaps at ceiling, hazardous step.) Plumbing OK but basin not draining freely. Paucity of shelf space for toiletries and towel rails)
Review 88:Restaurant food was very good and interesting menu, both breakfast and evening. Service friendly but a little leisurely in the evening.
Review 89:Hard to carry big suitcases up several flights of stairs and windy corridors.very noisy from road traffic at night.
Review 90:Historic building near the cathedral, good parking, nice breakfast.Very helpful staff.
Review 91:floor angle made it difficult to put any drinks or glassware on bedside tables as they just slid off, and floors very noisy to walk on.
Review 92:staff were very friendly and helpful, food was good and reasonable, and good central location.
Review 93:Nothing
Review 94:I loved my room - it had a four-poster bed - I was at a conference & alone so treated myself to a double room as I'm a carer for family & don't get much chance for a break & the room made my stay quite special.
Review 95:Whilst the hotel is opposite the abbey and a great location for that, the parks and city centre it is on a very busy road and a bit of a hill.
Review 96:Comfortable bed, flat screen TV, power shower. Tea and coffee making facilities.
Review 97:The building has lots of history character and charm so if that's what you are seeking then this hotel will definitely fit the bill. If however your emphasis is more on comfort you could be a little disappointed as apart from the comfy bed (on a slope)this felt more like a budget priced hotel. The staff were lovely and very helpful and the hotel is right in the centre of the high street so is very conveniently placed if youare looking for a good base to see the town.
Review 98:The stairs and uneven floors could be trying at the end of the day but you expect that with a building as old as this one.
Review 99:A wonderful old coaching inn in the centre of St Albans. Lots of atmosphere. The meals were excellent and the bar splendid.
Review 100:The room was dusty. Although you can expect it with some old buildings the door ways were very small in places. The room floor was slanted. Certain staff seemed unfriendly.
Review 101:I liked that the place had a sense of history about it. Its clearly a very old building. The room had a comfortable bed and large television.
Review 102:Would have liked to use the lovely common room for a group if it was not a corridor for bedrooms... maybe next time I and friends will book 8-11 for ourselves.
Review 103:Good mattress, atmospheric house of mystery, friendly staff, good parking.
Review 104:I had a problem with a drink I ordered in that I didn't believe it was the brand I ordered. Anyway, the proprietor didn't believe my version of the story and refused a full refund of the drink giving me back less than half the price of it. We were also short changed when we bought the drinks and had to ask for the correct change. The chamber maid was quite obnoxious too when she asked us to vacate the room. It was a shame that poor customer service soured our stay in what is a characterful building.maybe friendlier staff could be found elsewhere in St. Albans.
Review 105:The room was meant to be a double and a single. They even called in the morning to check. It was 2 singles pushed together and a grotty sofa bed that couldn't be opened as there was only a foot between it and the bottom of our bed(s). The bedding for our son was a dirty thin covered duvet with a number of disturbing stains. We couldn't be moved as the hotel was full apart from a twin toom which they offered our 12 year old son! Cobwebs on the ceilings, dirty grouting in the bathroom and a door you couldn't close or lock. I had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast which was vile - the eggs were not cooked enough. Shame, as if they spen some money on this potentially beautiful hotel it would make a killing. They did give me half my money back and gave a half baked apology but we will not be returning.
Review 106:The external image of the hotel and location
Review 107:Situated on main road - traffic noise significant. Very dated room, with noisy water system. Floor very uneven.
Review 108:Position great for visiting St Albans
Review 109:A bit noisy from late night smokers coming out of the hotel and talking loudly (our room was directly opposite the entrance to the hotel). Also a lot of pedestrians seem to use the car park as a walk way through to a housing estate
Review 110:The Restaurant was lovely as was the breakfast. The hotel itself is full of character and in a great location. We were impressed with the Hotel Manager (Italian), very professional but also friendly
Review 111:Family of 5 room but only 4 cups, tea bags & shower cream. Only 3 shampoos. Didn't realise it was on such a steep, busy hill - not good for nervous drivers.
Review 112:Very old worldly, happy for us to look round & sit in the old chairs. The room was lovely & big & the beds were super comfy.
Review 113:The fact we had a whole floor & 2 separate rooms when we booked for a triple, the pub itself was lovely, location amazing, brilliant value for money
Review 114:Old guy at desk was miserable twice did not address me say thank you or look in my eyes he just seemed moody
Review 115:Female staff where all lovely as was the location and the room
Review 116:Staff members hearts weren't really in it. Sink in the bedroom not the bathroom. Tap was not ergonomic to the sink placement. No big deal though, just saying.
Review 117:Particularly liked the feel of ye olde building. Food was gorgeous. Location perfect.
Review 118:Nothing! Husband could only fault the fact there was no razor point - quick trip to the "pound shop" for an adaptor soon sorted that
Review 119:Simone (manageress) very friendly and helpful - with a great memory for your drinks order! Excellent service all round. Good olde worlde pub/hotel in centre of town with free parking. Excellent food. Pianist playing in bar Friday/Saturday night was soooo good and got everyone singing - plays requests. We didn't want him to leave!
Review 120:We had 2 x rooms on the top floor and they were a bit strange. One of the rooms had sloping and bumpy floors so much so that the bed tilted backwards which was not comfortable. I know the building is very old so you have to expect abit of sloping with door frames etc but we have never seen anything quite like this. the rooms were noisy too. Our room was ok but there was no plug sockets near a mirror so it was impossible to do your hair.
Review 121:The lady on reception was lovely and very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was really tasty, we all enjoyed it. The rooms were clean. The hotel was very oldy worldy and in a great location.
Review 122:My room was above the bar so very noisy. People going out of pub to smoke right below my window. Very noisy. The room was very warm so i opened the window but as it is on the high street the noise from passing traffic became too much.
Review 123:Nothing worth putting on a review site - it was good value for the money.
Review 124:The proprietors have kept the character as much as possible and the room was clean, comfortable and quiet. I could hear the piano playing downstairs one evening, which was actually lovely rather than having loud pub music. Staff were friendly, location was great. The bathroom, though small, was clean and functional.
Review 125:We had a superior room which was a little basic but bathroom had been refurbished and was great. The bed was massive and very comfortable. There's a quirky historic vibe to the place. Dinner in the scenic restaurant was perfectly ok if not exactly high end cuisine.
Review 126:The building. Everything really. Great whisky selection too... BreakfAst was great. But the time it took for the waiter/reception guy to take my order was too long.
Review 127:Room was tiny with only one window that was too high to see out of. Bathroom was a joke. The sink was so small it was unusable, especially as it had an old wooden beam above it.
Review 128:Good breakfast
Review 129:rooms where cold and damp feeling when we arrive.Shower did not work. For very fit people.stairs very steep. Can not use Wifi in your room.
Review 130:very close to the cathedral and shops.Free parking.quirky building.
Review 131:Small toilet- shower room with taps and toilet which made a churning noise when used. Apparently normal for that kind of system.
Review 132:Free car park. Wifi in room, nice dining room and a good evening menu.
