Reviews for Hotel du Vin & Bistro Harrogate
Review 1:Staff seemed like they didn't want to be there! The rooms are tired and had been badly tarted up by a poor interior designer. Housekeeping was very poor; real issues with cleanliness. Breakfast was ok but just ok. Bed linen us d to be guaranteed as 100 per cent Egyptian cotton. Well it's crapy Poly Cotton now. Who ever owns this chain clearly never understood what the Hotel Du Vin brand once stood for. It smack of cheap skate owners trying to steal top dollar from clients justified by past glory. Sorry whoever you are but you won't be getting my money again!
Review 2:Lovely building!
Review 3:The staff member who booked me in was really kind and gave me a room with a lovely bath and was really helpful. I ordered room service and it was prompt and very pleasant .
Review 4:We spent a fabulous Xmas break here. James & his team could not have made us more welcome. Even our Labrador, Maisie, was treated like royalty. First class hotel & dining experience.
Review 5:No draft ale in the bar. Bar staff missing and inattentive. Expensive parking (£10 overnight) and breakfast (£15). Decor getting tired needs a refresh.
Review 6:Great location, comfortable, historic. Room was large and well appointed, very good shower.
Review 7:Smell of drains which we understand was caused by heavy rain and localised flooding. Thread bare carpet in bedroom
Review 8:Free upgrade to large room with beautiful bathroom
Review 9:Superb location in the centre of town and opposite Betty's tea room! Excellent parking facilities on the site well worth the £10.00 charge. Friendly and helpful staff.
Review 10:Asked for a bottle of sparkling wine and a birthday card to be left in the room on arrival it wasn't , there. room tired .dust around towel radiator and on toilet venetian blind . spot light out over mirror...,. had to pay for still water in the room, not what you would expect for a 4 star hotel
Review 11:breakfast
Review 12:The rooms could do with refurbishing - it's all looking a bit tired but has a distinctive ambience that should be retained. Perfect location and excellent staff.
Review 13:rooms are in need of renovation, they fall short of what we expected from a Hotel du Vin
Review 14:Public areas very nice and well maintained. Food was also very good
Review 15:Lighting in both room and en suite poor for shaving and putting make up on and mirror in en suite too far away from the user. Mirror in en suite too high for anybody under 5' 7". Room perhaps getting close to a revite needed.
Review 16:Comfortable, large bedroom, food nice, staff friendly and helpful.
Review 17:Have stayed at this hotel for many, many years and it's always been great, this Time it was awful - room had damp all over the walls, extremely noisy, very little light at all in the room & when we informed staff, reception were just rude & wouldnt even make a note of complaints on check out. Very disappointing.
Review 18:Our cellar room was very noisy the first night (due to location beneath the bar/restaurant) so we asked to be moved. The second night was better but still quite noisy.
Review 19:The hotel is charming inside with a great, relaxed ambience. It is very well located. The reception staff were extremely helpful and welcoming, especially when we asked to be moved.
Review 20:Poor service in the Bistro for breakfast so we didn't go on the second morning, plus being charged for breakfast from the previous occupants of our room.
Review 21:The location and beauty of the hotel
Review 22:There was no hot water to our shower. Pointed this out to staff. It wasn't sorted until the following morning when it was too late to use. The coffee machine was missing from the room which was annoying but staff bought us a cafeteria and sachets for morning. Where the room is right on the pavement it was a little noisey and could have done with secondary glazing. But all in all a nice stay.
Review 23:The room was lovely. Ideal location for town. Staff were helpful.
Review 24:Generally attention to detail poor and actions didn't match words, when a number of times things that were requested never arrived. Evening meal very disappointing and overpriced.
Review 25:Room ok, staff pleasant
Review 26:Bar staff need to become familiar with their alcohol stock. Bistro staff very slow, not attentive to customers
Review 27:reception staff excellent. Good food however on certain dish luck of core spice
Review 28:This was the only thing that wasn't great The service in the bistro on our first night was slow more people standing at the till than dealing with customers, perhaps it was new staff. eventually all was well
Review 29:the informality and helpfulness and the hotels atmosphere and design was very French. Our bedroom had a lovely bathroom and was spacious very relaxing. The hotel is also close to the green and just a short walk from the town centre. A lovely place for a short break in Harrogate
Review 30:We paid £185 to stay one evening and was hoping for a better room than the one we was allocated. Paid £15 for two small glasses of white wine, interesting.
Review 31:The location and staff was very good.
Review 32:Some staff are awesome, and some are less so.... but everyone has a bad day.
Review 33:The location and set up is ideal for us and our dog. Lots of room and next to the stray in the middle of town.
Review 34:Room overheated, could not open the window. Toilet seat loose, shower wall fixing very loose and about to fall out. Lights too dim in the bedroom especially the reading lights which were too dim to read by. Breakfast overpriced and scrambled egg overcooked and grainy. Restaurant basically turned down a party of 14 who had just spent £500 in the bar. Said they could not put tables together (nonsense) and could only do main courses. We ate elsewhere.
Review 35:The location and the bar
Review 36:The spa was just a steam room and treatment rooms expected a bit more sauna, pool, etc. parking a bit steep at a tenner.
Review 37:Great location, friendly staff.
Review 38:The location of the hotel was excellent overlooking the stray. The room was large and very comfortable with luxurious king sized bed. Excellent bathroom with rolled top bath as well as a large shower.
Review 39:The food was delicious. The staff were delightful & the room was comfortable. Loved the fact hotel is right in the centre of town & within short walking distance of all shops & restaurants.
Review 40:The roof leaked in my room and the balcony had some damage on the far right
Review 41:The comfort of the room, wide open balcony. The Chateubriand steak and Red wine were also superb.
Review 42:The room I booked was pretty cheap as was a basement room and was warned there may be some noise during my stay. What I wasn't counting on was being directly below reception under a wooden floor with people in heels walking above my head ALL night. Not much sleep gotten and had to get up and out early for coffee as couldn't relax in the room!
Review 43:The room itself was lovely, bed was huge, large freestanding bath and lovely powerful shower
Review 44:the water didn't go down the plughole and flooded into the bathroom showing all the muck on the floor. I did speak to reception about this but nothing was done. The kettle was broken and reception was again informed. Nothing was done. The lights on the desk needed to have their plugs removed to use any other appliances available, ie a hairdryer and the broken kettle which was very bad planning. There were too many 'glittery' extras and not enough working basics. The lighting was so poor it was impossible to put makeup on and in the bathroom it was so far from the mirror that was impossible too and the lighting was too bright and not enough natural light. The windows were also filthy. I did write to the hotel when I returned home but have heard nothing from them. Very disappointed. This was the night before my daughter's wedding and many of the wedding party were staying at the hotel. I was extremely stressed anyway, understandably and this experience made it a lot worse. I was not going to write any of this on here but as I haven't heard anything directly in response to my email I felt i had no choice. I spent a lot of money to stay with my daughter and really wished I'd stay at the hotel I stayed at the night of the wedding which was a much smaller less flashy hotel at half the price...quality not quantity!!!
Review 45:The external appearance. The size of bed and bath.
Review 46:We loved the hotel, staff we're very pleasant. Great location ,there was a difficult situation in the bar, the manager James handled this very professionally.
Review 47:The room service (which we chose to have on our second night was over priced and not worth the money for the portion sizes. To be fair to the hotel they took off the salmon. The only other thing that put us off was the smell in reception and in the corridors which smelt badly of drains. This was apparent for our whole stay.
Review 48:Loved the location of this hotel, once you have parked you don't need your car at all.... Located right in the heart of Harrogate and so fab for walking everywhere. The beds were very comfortable and bathrooms nice. We had a twin superior which looked over the park so stunning. The treatments were great and girls in the spa really were very good. Breakfast was yummy.
Review 49:The room had a bad smell of drains throughout the stay and although I paid for a deluxe room I do not feel there was anything 'deluxe' about the room compared to a standard room.
Review 50:Hotel was in a great location and the hotel itself was lovely
Review 51:Would like the restaurant to have locally sourced food as all HdV same menus and yet as individual styles would like the food choice to be the same.
Review 52:Love the setting and hotel as we got married there 3 years ago. The hotel has a great atmosphere.
Review 53:The shower didn't drain properly so the bathroom flooded. They compensated for this by a token discount.
Review 54:Great location - central and walkable for the sights, restaurants and shops.
Review 55:the manager unfortunately did not address our concerns. rooms on the ground floor are not air conditioned despite the price and labelled as modern rooms.
Review 56:very clean hotel and central in harrogate
Review 57:We didn't have any thing we didn't like apart from coming home lol x
Review 58:Amazing staff, amazing top notch feel to French style hotel, restraunt staff went extra mile to make it a special night, and a very helpful Gergana at reception she was lovely went the extra mile, special touch,s at this hotel, and we were in a basement room, and would book one again, Kevin &Davina x
Review 59:Breakfast was a bit of a shambles in terms of service, argument between staff over music volume one evening and average evening meals. Rooms above reception very noisy.
Review 60:Hotel itself is within easy reach of the town centre.
Review 61:Shabby decor. We had to wait for 40 mins for our breakfast. When it arrived, the bacon looked like it had been microwaved in a lump as it was still all turned under in the rashers. Then it had been fried and was covered in black specks. Turkey discussing. We complained but received no proper outcome. Also they called for the duty manager who said he was in the building and on his way. After another long wait. And him still not coming to see us, we left as our anniversary weekend was being ruined. We needed to get out of there before it disappeared, just waiting for incompetent staff. It cost £200 a night and was the worst value ever. I'm sure there must be a lot better hotels in Harrogate. Book one of those and Avoid this one if you want a classy city break, don't use this Hotel.
Review 62:That it was in Harrogate near the centre.
Review 63:Open and friendly staff, right from booking by phone through to check out. Well appointed room. Restaurant accommodated our small party at short notice with no fuss. Good parking arrangements.
Review 64:Paying for parking!
Review 65:Lovely hotel , loved the bathroom . Lovely view of the park from the room. Breakfast suberb. Staff polite and helpful. Definitely recommend
Review 66:Had to pay £10 to park car in hotel car park - I believe it is possible to park for free on road, but we were kindly offered the parking right at side of hotel so that we were insured against a possible longer walk with elderly parents, so not really complaining just a 'heads up' to others.
Review 67:Spacious, modern, stylish, basement room. Every attempt had been made to make our stay in the room as comfortable as possible - everything spotlessly clean, lovely toiletries of every sort, wide choice of Taylor's organic teas with fresh milk in fridge, iron and ironing board, towelling robes, luxury slippers (to take home), etc. Breakfast was a range of usual buffet choice, followed by cooked main from the menu. The main hot menu choice was wide and every item on it put there with thought. We ordered 4 different items and when each one arrived it was obvious to see that there was a talented chef in the kitchen who cared about what he created! Easily compatible breakfast to a £20-25 5* London hotel. Nothing was too much trouble for the friendly staff. The new receptionist who said she had only started day before was incredibly helpful (and obviously well trained) - even accompanied our elderly parents to their room and patiently explained 'the ropes' to them. She'd also phoned the day before to say we'd got a free upgrade from basement to 2nd floor, so they had no stairs to contend with after noticing they were both in their 80s. We stayed for night before visiting Harrogate Flower show and will use this hotel again next time.
Review 68:Our room was roomy but very dark. We had to put our make up with wardrobe door open for light
Review 69:Upon checking in our room smelled of sewage so we had to be moved to the only room they had left under the dining room, which was very noisy and extremely dark. The double bed my business partner and I had to share was comfortable but had booked a twin room. I had about 2 hours sleep. We were refunded parking and £33 drinks bill. Doesn't really compensate a nights sleep.
Review 70:I would have liked more lighting in our basement room, it was a bit dim even with all the lights on
Review 71:The spa treatments were great, especially the back massage
Review 72:Room to hot, bathroom mooldy, toilet seat lose, room not clean, lighting in room poor, evening meal a disgrace , we paid £185 for the room if it had been £50 it would have been too much,
Review 73:Location
Review 74:Not enough light over the mirrors in either the bedroom (Errazuriz) or in the bathroom to do my makeup. My friends had the same problem.
Review 75:The warm welcome (especially by the General Manager), the lovely girls in the spa and the attention to detail everywhere which made it so homely.
Review 76:The room was shabby - didn't look as if the carpet had been hoovered. The bed was without doubt one of the most uncomfortable I've ever slept in.
Review 77:The staff and the location. The staff were very helpful and apologetic.
Review 78:The fan in the bathroom stayed on all night causing me to have a disturbed night. I was slightly disappointed by the lack of interest from reception when this was pointed out to them.
Review 79:Decor, staff, ambiance
Review 80:Staff not too helpful cleanliness gone down over last few years lack of toiletries etc in room , also room smelt very damp , just feels like a bit run down when in the past felt very clean and on the ball !
Review 81:Been a lot great location
Review 82:Fantastic Hotel everything was fabulous xx especially the gorgeous Bathroom and bed ...The Champagne Bar was the best and breakfast and dinner was above 5 star and the staff were 5 star too .. We will definately be going back for another visit ..
Review 83:Room was small and very hot despite it being cold and rainy outside - window opened a little way, but it was then very noisy - avoid staying at the back of the hotel if possible
Review 84:Superb location and staff. Food and wine were exceptional
Review 85:Basement room, very noisy overhead, should have been told. Asked to pay for room on arrival, but this, did not include the newspaper or parking cost - why not? meant had to sort out paying twice.
Review 86:Good location, friendly reception.
Review 87:The problem we have is we would like to have a meal in the hotel and I am a vegetarian. Artichokes are not my favourite and the choice is therefore very limited for veggie food - this prevents us from choosing the hotel for our meal at night.
Review 88:The location of the hotel is fantastic we upgraded to the studio room at the top of the hotel The bed was amazing as was the room although we would recommend wearing a helmet as I did bump my head on the eve of the roof Ouch! But a great hotel very friendly staff we stay at least 3 times a year - love it. The best Hotel du Vin. General manager actually carried my case for me a delightful man.
Review 89:I think the room could do with a touch of paint especially the bathroom. The room not as good as the one's we have stayed in the York De Vin.
Review 90:Location very good and excerllent staff.
Review 91:Room was gloomy, breakfast order was very very slow, coffee weak does the hotel scrimp using cheap make
Review 92:Dinner during evening was v nice, both service & food
Review 93:No air conditioning resulting in very poor nights sleep, room very tired and in need of decoration. Additional parking fee on top of expensive room.
Review 94:Good location. Nice bar
Review 95:There was a peculiar smell in the bathroom. All the mirrors werepositioned too high for comfort. I have ms so balance is a problem -there was nothing to hang on to for safety either by the bath or inthe shower.
Review 96:We had twin bedded room with plenty of space. The beds were comfortable.I was provided with an extra sheet because the duvet was too hot. Thebathroom was large with a huge bath and separate shower. Breakfast wasgood with plenty of options. We were able to have dinner at 5 pm as wewere going to the theatre.
Review 97:The quality of the breakfast was second to none, however the non- cooked breakfast was poor and not good value for money. Nearly fourteen pounds for yogurt, cereal out of small packets and a small selection of Danish pastries. I would have expected at least some croissants, cheeses, eggs, toast, tomato and a selection of cured meats for that price - a real continental breakfast.
Review 98:Couldn't fault the hotel or staff, really lovely people and we can't wait to try another Hotel Du Vin.
Review 99:Room was too hot and air conditioning wasn't good even opening windows didn't help.... Car parking
Review 100:Loved the look and feel of the place and the size of the room. Food was great!
Review 101:Kept waiting quite a while to be seated for breakfast, member of staff saw we were waiting, but carried on wiping tables. There was shell in my eggs benedict, which put me off a bit. Toast bought out before we had even ordered cooked breakfast, and cold by the time we wanted to eat i!
Review 102:Excellent location
Review 103:Rooms getting a little tired / dusty. Lighting near mirrors needs improving for ladies getting ready for a night out apparently!
Review 104:Location and (pricey) bar - very nice club sandwich at lunch time.
Review 105:The staff were very friendly. Lovely large room with excellent facilities including a Nespresso machine, roll top bath and walk in shower. Really enjoyed our stay.
Review 106:Really poor value for money. Was kept waiting at check in to be told our room wasn't ready, this was 2pm in the afternoon. Additional charges for parking, breakfast and spa. Room was worn and tired looking. So didn't really have a lot to show for the £250 I spent for one nights stay.
Review 107:Th location was close to shops and restaurants etc
Review 108:Restaurant very mediocre. Bathroom in my room, although excellent, needed a thorough cleaning - blinds covered in dust, window paintwork terrible. Hotel in my opinion is becoming very run-down.
Review 109:Great bathrooms and bedrooms in the superior rooms. Superb continental breakfast served in room. Great location. Lovely bed linen
Review 110:In basement room, you could hear people walking in the restaurant until it closed then again in the morning. The room needed better lighting it was v dark. Should be tea facilities not just coffee.
Review 111:Stephanie on reception was brilliant. Very attentive and helpful. She is definitely cut out for a customer service role. Bed was comfortable and room was a good size.
Review 112:The deep, free standing bath and very comfy bed made it a wonderful stay. I also asked for a bottle of Champagne to be put in the room as it was my husbands birthday and they kindly also left him a birthday message from the hotel. Great service.
Review 113:Appallingly slow service in the Restaurant. We waited 45 minutes for our wine to arrive and meal took over 2 hours to serve. Many other customers in the Restaurant were complaining and some walked out. Bathroom was not clean and hotel definitely ready for re-decoration.
Review 114:Location was good for our visit to CLA Game Fair. Reception Staff were very helpful and friendly
Review 115:Splash back was cracked sink was chipped door signs were sticky room was extremely dark and because it was a basement room it was very noisy as you could hear every footstep above (should probably warn people about this pre booking)
Review 116:The vegetarian options in the restaurant are very limited - we find it difficult to have a meal in the hotel but would prefer to enjoy meals within the hotel.
Review 117:We stay here at least 3 times a year - we love the atmosphere and the comfort of the hotel . Always recommend it to friends.
Review 118:Central location, lovely supper and friendly staff. I have stayed beforein this and other HDV'S.
Review 119:Romm and bathroom, shabby wall paper and very dark. Bathroom tilesstained and basin cracked. +. I forgot, and desk didn't remind me reparking, and so was cross to get a ticket at 8.10 in the morning.
Review 120:We opted for the continental breakfast rather than full English. Poor selection in table - there were lots of cereals, but no natural yoghurt, no artisan breads (only sliced bread as toast), no cold meats or cheese, rather uninteresting chopped up apple fruit salad. I thought the evening meal in the restaurant was rather overpriced.
Review 121:Helpful staff, comfy bed, served decaf tea
Review 122:The hotel room was very hot and quite small. For the price per night and the fact it was 4 stars I would have expected more.
Review 123:Food and service was excellent
Review 124:See above.
Review 125:The room should have been available by 3.00pm. On arrival at 3.45pm it was not available and I waited until 4.15pm for a room. On entry to the room the previous occupants sheets and towels were all outside the door. The bathroom floor was still wet from cleaning. The bathroom sink had cracks in it.
Review 126:we have been coming to the hotel for a number of years and we feel its needs a revamp as alot of the seats carpets in bedrooms are tired and need replacing.
Review 127:nice and central for shops etc.
Review 128:nothing
Review 129:The service from reception to the bar and restaurant was enjoyable and 1st class. We had a front facing room, it was big and very comfortable and very smart. Bathroom very well laid out with a great shower. we had an evening meal it was great also breakfast and freshly cooked not under warmers well done.
Review 130:No shower toiletries - the shampoo / shower gel holders were empty. The room was a basement room with floorboards directly above and were woken by contestant loud footsteps from 7:00am on a Saturday. Not what I would expect for £200 a night. I mentioned this on checkout to a very disinterested receptionist.
Review 131:No unpleasant experiences but we felt the bar prices were too expensive along with the contents of the minibar. We ate breakfast in the bistro each morning. The full English breakfast was cold and again I felt it was expensive for what we got. A car parking fee of £10 per day was also expensive.
Review 132:Hotel was well positioned in the centre of Harrogate. Facilities were excellent, along with the service and general attention to detail. We stayed in a first floor room (superior room) that overlooked the parkland. The room was well decorated and provided a great base to walk to a variety of venues. We travelled by train because of this fact.
Review 133:Only one loo roll provided in bathroom which wasnt enough. Pricey drinks over £9.00 for a prosecco!!
Review 134:Beutiful location, fabulous building with lovely inetriors. Lovely terrace behind hotel. Friendly relaxed atmosphere and staff similarly relaxed. proximity of parking to hotel. very comfortable bed and super bathroom.
Review 135:The room was lovely but on further inspection the blinds where full of dust and behind the bath was dirty The room could do with a very good dusting. The ironing board kept collapsing.
Review 136:The girl on reception on arrival wasn't very friendly. The manager was excellent and very helpful. Didn't like that you had to pay to park your car.
The Fine Print
