Reviews for Hôtel Domaine du Breuil Cognac

Review 1:Seems a bit tired now, our room wasn't very clean. Bright emergency light in our room - we had to find something to wedge in front of it to get it dark enough for us to sleep. The junior suite we booked isn't really a suite - there's a small sitting area separated from the main bed by a tall radiator.

Review 2:Nice bath - bubbles and lights. Easy to find just out of town - free parking

Review 3:Expensive breakfast

Review 4:The location, not far trom the centre and in the nature. Very comfortabel and nice room, very clean. Also the bathroom is very clean and recently refurbished. Very quiet! Beautiful garden.

Review 5:We didn't have breakfast as we thought it was a little over priced. There were no cloths to clean the bath between users. The batteries for bathroom TV remote control needed replacing so did not work. The bed could have been a little bigger.

Review 6:We had the Deluxe room we asked for. Lovely surroundings although a little difficult to find (would be impossible without Sat Nav). We would definitely use the hotel again.

Review 7:It was good to have bikes provided free of charge to go the Cognac centre but it would have been nicer if the bikes were properly maintained. We could not change gears, which made it tough uphill... We walked when it was too hard...

Review 8:A good price for a nice hotel but we had only a small room at the top, only one available for 2 days

Review 9:Didn't like the view of neighbouring warehouses - they could have been improved with a lick of paint or, better yet, demolition. The general state of the garden would suggest the gardener was on holiday.

Review 10:Good restaurant and helpful staff.

Review 11:Not a "bad" experience but disappointing. The "grand" room becomes less grand after an hour or so, there was little or no sound insulation between our room and the next, and breakfast was chaotic, even though the main season was over.

Review 12:The overall first impression is impressive but beyond that it's a little disappointing. Our complaint about breakfast was received sympathetically and the high cost of one (€14) was refunded voluntarily and immediately..

Review 13:The restaurant was slightly disappointing; staff seemed inexperienced and the food wasn't outstanding.

Review 14:Beautiful surroundings, a warm welcome and a very comfortable bedroom.

Review 15:Such an imposing building from outside. The rest a different story. Room on third floor. Only accessible by spiral staircase as lift stops on the second floor. Tatty bedroom carpet, slippery bathroom floor, boiling hot/no air-con. Went for dinner. Was shown the blackboard of specials and invited to choose. Three courses 29 euros. Starter unavailable. Main course steak... a slab of totally inedible gristle! I could not even cut it with the very sharp knife provided. Desert of homemade Ice cream ok. The worst meal I've ever had anywhere in Europe. I've never had a really bad never nind inedible meal in France before, and I've been touring here for almost 40 years. The maitre 'd could not have cared less ! The staff at reception were exactly the same. My family are all in the hospitality business , owners of pubs and restaurants in Ireland, and I can honestly say any chef of theirs presenting a meal of this poor quality would simply be fired. Little wonder they have a beautiful building devoid of guests! Truly dreadful.

Review 16:The sight of the hotel in the rear view mirror as I left!

Review 17:Arrived and let in by a guest who said no staff til 3pm. There's a bell to ring though. The shutters on the front of the building were very shabby and it looked like it needed a good renovate. Inside was dated, especially the bathroom. The breakfast was minimal and €14 and expensive for what was there. We had an evening meal. Staff attentive even though there was a wedding party in unfortunately our steak was very very tough. Disappointing. The 15-20 min walk to town was through a rather salubrious area and although given a map, we got lost each time and wandered around the streets for a very long time. All in all we were disappointed in the hotel and Cognac itself.

Review 18:Lovely big room with 3 bay windows. Pool and grounds really nice. Clean and always plenty of beds. Staff always polite and respectful. I liked the history of the place and odd bits of antique furniture. The balcony in the evening was lovely with tables, chairs, umbrellas and lights.

Review 19:I did not particularly like the fact that we had to arrange our own taxi's. The hotel is a good 20+ minutes walk from the town and 40 minutes walk from the station. Unless you are travelling by car, not a fantastic location. We did enjoy our walk to town and from town on occasion.I found the hotel a bit stiff for myself and my 2 daughters (aged 13 and 28). We felt we could not relax and just unwind on the terrace. Definitely suited to a young couple or elderly couple on a romantic weekend. We felt rather out of place. Breakfast not really worth the extra 15 euro. Most of the hotels we stayed in included the breakfast in the rate.

Review 20:We enjoyed the use of the free bicycles during our stay. It was extremely hot and the hotel pool was the perfect spot for cooling down and relaxing. The food and service supplied at the hotel restaurant was fantastic.

Review 23:I suppose if you didn't have a car then you'd probably want to call a taxi to take you down into the town, but this wasn't relevant for us. Perhaps there are buses.

Review 24:I stayed around 6 years ago with my (then) baby daughter as we were attending a wedding in the area. It was perfect then, and it was even more perfect this time. The gardens are perfect for dogs and it was easy to run down and along the river to extend the route (our dogs need a lot of exercise). The restaurant really was superb. We ate out on the second night and the food was the same price but nowhere near as good quality. And the the "maison" cognac cocktails were the highlight of my year so far! I have tried recreating them at home without success. It was quiet when we stayed, and didn't really demand much of the staff but they seemed pretty friendly and helpful when we did need anything. I am planning to take my elderly parents next year. So great for visiting the town and distillery but so calm and tranquil too.

Review 25:The hotel is not as described in the hotel description and its photographs It is very poor quality and in need of a complete refurbishment The room we were originally offered was terrible Far to small and old fashioned We would have left the hotel if we hadn't have had to pay in full This is probably the worse hotel we have ever stayed in and would not reccomend it or stay ever again

Review 26:Nothing

Review 27:Thought the food was very expensive... also the breakfast seemed over priced.

Review 28:Loved the location, great for the dog, lots of gardens to run in. The owners were very friendly

Review 29:I know they can't help what's been built around them, distillery and housing on road in, but what a shame. Night disturbed by yowling of feral cats, not too big a deal as we were only staying one night but think it would be a problem if you were staying longer.

Review 30:Beautiful building externally, but interior decor of bedroom (nautical theme!) most odd, why not just keep to how it should be? Lovely view from bedroom at back of hotel of the grounds, which are extensive and a bit wild in places. Enjoyed the pool.

Review 31:Such a friendly welcome, made to feel special. Beautiful house in own grounds, full of history related to distilling Cognac. Tasteful room, with superb views and features. Swimming pool, table tennis, restaurant serving good food with a choice of 'set menu' or a la carte. Delicious breakfast. MUST try the Cognac tasting, very informative and very tasty, no hang over either, probably because of quality. Family run and speak English too.

Review 32:fantastic place amazing hosts and unbeatable views food devine what more could you want value for money we all had a wonderful stay in a clean and beautiful chateaux cant wait to go again

Review 33:Arrived at 12.00 noon and told to come back in 3 hours as the hotel was closed. "Go to a bar" very poor first impression and welcome. Remember this is a three star hotel! A shame because other facilities and service was good.

Review 34:Location, food, Pool and terrace, room and views

Review 35:well I'm not mad on the poolside plastic furniture and the bathroom was a little dated but these are minor niggles which in no way detracted from our enjoyment of the hotel.

Review 36:great cocktails; super food; helpful & accommodating staff; peaceful location; a lovely, spacious room with huge high ceilings and tall shuttered windows. beautiful views across the countryside.

Review 37:Not the cheapest overnight stay for DBB but still highly enjoyable.

Review 38:Great location for a trip to Cognac as only just outside the city centre by car. Very friendly owners and staff who were more than hospitable. Would highly recommend.

Review 39:Booked a first floor room with views 7 months ago. Arrived and was given a 2nd floor. They change the room to the front first room which was Ok but it was annoying. Way out of town.

Review 40:The food in the restaurant was good in the evening. Breakfast I think to expensive so we went into town.

Review 41:Small double. Breakfast extra and expensive.

Review 42:Friendly staff. Given large room as upgrade but still small double and not much room.

Review 43:Hotel Domaine de Breuil is a beautiful building. The staff are very helpful and also very friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

Review 44:The location of the hotel and the helpfulness of the staff

Review 45:excellent restaurant, lovely location.

Review 46:Dinner waits taffeta were rude.

Review 47:Nice grounds.

Review 48:Most beautiful location hospetalety dinner on Varanda pool so beautiful very friendly

Review 49:hotel needs updating and reception lady did not seem happy.

Review 50:food amazing really nice server

Review 51:Location, setting, easy parking and old world ambience. Peaceful and relaxing. Staff friendly and helpful.

Review 52:They could use a bit of work on the outside but it did not impact our stay at all.

Review 53:The junior suite room was beautiful.

Review 54:Good location with easy parking. comfortable room.

Review 55:Beautiful chateaux with modern interior touch. Nice and helpful staff.

Review 56:Nothing.

Review 57:Staff, location and service were excellent. Hotel is very picturesque.

Review 58:Staff, food & accommodation

Review 59:The hotel needs a facelift; pictures missing from frames, the decoration and furniture all look rather tired.

Review 60:Excellent main course in the restaurant

Review 61:Pity that we booked a Sunday so couldnot have dinner

Review 62:beautiful setting and very peaceful

Review 63:Calm and quite. 15 minutws by walk from city center. beuatiful chateau!!

Review 64:Rien

Review 65:Un très beau chateau

Review 66:Situated overlooking some stunning views and only a 20 minute walk into the centre on the town

Review 67:Excellent restaurant

Review 68:Nothing to report

Review 69:A discrete but helpful welcome, quiet seclusion, spacious and inspiring location, impeccable amenities, comfort and convenience.

Review 70:The place could clearly do with a lot of money being spent on it both inside and out - the breakfast was very basic for 14 euros I felt - with the cheese and ham being cut into very small portions - and it was not 'proper' French bread from the bakers - which is so DELICIOUS in France but the half baked batons you buy in the supermarket and do yourself -same with croissants - they were minute and not like the fab ones we had at our stop in Le Mans !!!! Top that with the fact that we were asked to vacate a nice round 4 seater table near the window We had started our breakfast on because the 'Madame' was expecting a family of 4 down for breakfast - for that very same table to be occupied by a single French woman for the duration of our breakfast - who was still there when we checked out later !!!!! How would you feel about that !!!! Certainly biased my opinion here !!!!!!!

Review 71:The position and the initial appearance

Review 72:It was disappointing to see that the pool area at the hotel looked as if it needed some love and attention. The town of Cognac felt too busy of traffic and not very well kept.

Review 73:The hotel was convenient to visit Cognac. The bedroom was very comfortable, spacious and nicely decorated. We ate in the restaurant, which was lovely. The barman was happy to talk to us about the different cognacs stocked in the bar and generally the staff were pleasant and helpful.

Review 74:Dominique and the staff could not have been nicer or more friendly. They helped us arrange a your of one of the cognac makers and were a great source of information about the local history. We ate like kings in their wonderful dining room and had a truly wonderful stay.

Review 75:Well appointed spacious rooms with excellent views over grounds/countryside. Very good breakfast and evening restaurant. Also close enough to Cognac town itself to walk to other restaurants in town. Very friendly & welcoming proprietors and staff.

Review 76:We were travelling back from Spain to England and after a long drive it was wonderful to e relax in the peaceful grounds and enjoy the lovely infinity pool too. The proprietorsand there family were lovely and nothing was to much trouble. We had our evening meal on the terrace. A superb dinner in great surroundings. We will certainly return.

Review 77:The bed was very hard and small for a suite. One of the bathroom windows in the suite was missing a curtain as it overlooked the pool.

Review 78:The setting was excellent and only 15 minutes walk in to centre of Cognac. The room was very French and staff were always on hand to help. The infinity pool and gardens were very nice. The evening meal was very good and the steak cooked to perfection, however i did end up with a funny tummy, which may have come from the starter of snails!

Review 79:The grounds were very beautiful and we loved our dinner on the terrace. The range of cognac was very impressive and we enjoyed tasting some of them.

Review 80:The diffrence between the first floor and the top floor is huge, the top floor is cramped, dark and look in despearte need for a bit of TLC, while the first floor make you feel like you're sleeping at Downton Abbey.

Review 81:We originally booked a room on the top floor, which was small, cramped and dark. Got offered an upgrade for only 14 euro extra, and got a massive room overlooking the garden, the pool and the hills. The Domaine the Breuil is a gem, a beautiful mansion within walking distance of the city centre. The exterior is amazing, with its large garden and pool, a great place to relax. Nice and friendly staff, comfy beds and quiet surroundings. Would love to come back here.

Review 82:When we arrived they was very confused about us bringing kids even if we had stated this in the reservation. They informed that the room we ordered was not possible with kids even if we informed clearly in reservation. Finally they sorted the rooms was great, modern and functional. Dinner at hotel was average but they had a great selection of cognac.

Review 83:Nice pool in the backyard Nice room when they finally manage to get us a room that facilitated our order.

Review 84:The fact that we were charged €2.50 for a small bottle of water, especially when there was no evidence that the limited non-alcoholic offerings in the fridge were chargeable!

Review 85:Warm and friendly welcome. Focus on customer service. Comfortable and well equipped room. Great location to explore Cognac. Great range of cognacs to consume ....but beware, the cost soon mounts up!

Review 86:Breakfast selection was a bit light.

Review 87:The location is great (20min by foot to the main square in city center), the castle is nice with a wonderful view on Cognac's countryside.

Review 88:The pillows were small and lumpy, neither of us slept well, and in spite of staying there on a friend's reccommendation, would never go there again. Our compaint was dismissed as unimportant. The bill included breakfast, which neither of us had.

Review 89:The premises

Review 90:Place is ran by a family. Offered options were somewhat exaggerated atevery point and too overpriced for what they were. Breakfast was a jokefor 13 euros - primitive and tasteless

Review 91:Location and building outside

Review 92:Nothing to dislike

Review 93:The Chateau was situated on the outskirts of the city, walkable but easier by car. The Restuarant was very good and the owners daughter (the chef ) provided excellent food. The son in law was very knowledgeable of the 15o cognacs that they had to offer. Excellent stay

Review 94:This was a rather old fashioned hotel of the kind that it is always a pleasure to stay in. The service, friendliness and welcome were heart warming and the range of cognac in the bar was to be believed!

Review 95:We found all aspects of the hotel excellent.

Review 96:We really enjoyed our stay here. Our room was beautiful, the owners were friendly and helpful. We had dinner in the restaurant and the meal was delicious. The cocktail bar was also very elegant but also relaxed and comfortable.

Review 97:Toilet oom was very small with no window or extractor working although bathroom area was large

Review 98:Beautiful building with lovely views over the valley or garden. Has outdoor heated swimming pool. The bar is choc full of whiskies and brandies. Our room had three large tall double windows looking over valley

Review 99:Only disadvantage was rooms are very small.

Review 100:Very friendly; Great restaurant; good ideas for seeing Cognac; nice setting; better than average breakfast.

Review 101:Breakfasts bit expensive no air con

Review 102:Charming converted chateaux lovely decoration in rooms excellent service staff extremely helpful only 15 mins walk to centre of town

Review 103:Rooms can get a bit warm (no airco, only fan).

Review 104:Beautiful castle, very helpful staff, nice cognac tasting, good location to visit the cognac houses, pool.

Review 105:The hotel would benefit from an interior update.

Review 106:Good clean basic accommodation, lovely setting and great for a visit to Cognac. Dinner on the terrace was a highlight, menu pretty good but nothing exceptional. Not an expensive hotel, although the interior decor and rooms reflect the value for money. Very friendly and helpful family staff.

Review 107:The carpets in our room could have done with a good hover and the shower screen a good clean. The room was quite small and sparse although it did have an excellent view over the gardens and pool area. We found the lady owner of the hotel to be very offhanded and she did not make any effort to speak to us.

Review 108:The young man in the restaurant was very attentive and he explained all about the cognac to us. He was very friendly and spoke in English. The pool area and gardens were very nice. However it rained during our stay so we were not able to swim, walk in the gardens, ride one of their bikes or use the golfing facilities. Very peaceful and the view from our room was wonderful

Review 109:When we arrived at the hotel we had to pay extra to get normal roomssince the ones initially assigned were on the third floor (no elevator)and extremely tiny. The total cost was therefore significantly above ourinitial booking.

Review 110:No meals on Sunday evening, but owner recommended two restaurants which were available at that time. Very thoughtful!

Review 111:Lovely location and great and comfortable room. Views over vineyards and excellent pool.

Review 112:I cannot think of a thing to complain about.

Review 113:It was like a dream. Domaine du Breuil is beautiful. We had plans to gointo town for dinner but once we arrived, we both instantly decidedthat would were going to stay at Domaine du Breuil for dinner. I am soglad that we did because the food and service were wonderful. Afterdinner we went to their Cognac bar which was very impressive. The roomwas beautiful and clean and the buffet breakfast was well worth themoney. I would recommend this place to anyone who would like to betreated special.

Review 114:This is one of the best hotels we ever stayed in. THe owners both knowhow to recieve guests. The cuisine is top, so are the rooms and thebuilding itself. This place is à must!

Review 115:A place of dreams. The amazing array of different Cognacs is almost enough by itself, but the knowledge of the staff on the subject is amazing. Set in a beautiful location, I can imagine that a summer break here would be sublime - we do plan to check this. Even the swimming pool has a fabulous view...

Review 116:Restaurant closed on Sunday evenings with no alternative in thevicinity.

Review 117:Bedroom balcony overlooks the panaromic view of the lake. Care andattention to every detail of design and facilities in a family hotel

Review 118:Could do with a better local map. Not easy to find without gps.

Review 119:Very helpful staff. Stayed on late for our delayed arrival. The Cognaccollection in a dedicated bar was excellent and informative.

Review 120:The setting - beautiful gardens, terrace to sit on and even dine outside. Breakfast good. All the staff were very attentive.

Review 121:Breakfast night be better for the offered price.

Review 122:Decor a bit tired

Review 123:Location, meals, service, cognac tasting

Review 124:Food was ok but lacked passion

Review 125:The atmosphere

Review 126:Nothing other than we couldn't stay longer!

Review 127:Everything!
