Reviews for Esplanade Hotel
Review 1:The shower didn't work reported to a member of staff we out all day got back still the shower didn't work they arrived to fix it at 8.30 pm told them to go away
Review 2:Food was good value
Review 3:No heating in room, went to strip bed before we left and pillows and duvet were stained and dirty. Will never stay there again. Photo on website do not match the photos. It's a grubby hotel. We didn't even have breakfast that we had booked. As we saw the chef who was out side smoking.
Review 4:Nothing
Review 5:Didn't get the 2 single rooms I booked. Given a double and a single. Neither had any heating, on the coldest night of the year (-5°). Offered dangerous heater, and then an electric radiator that didn't work, and an extension lead as there was only 1socket in my room. The lead packed up in the small hours. Gave up trying to sleep at 4am, got fully dressed, and got back into bed and shivered until breakfast at 8:30.
Review 6:Very clean room, modern ensuite, friendly receptionist.
Review 7:the noise from the other rooms, up to gone four in the mornings, crushing about and swearing . the other thing was the floor very uneven
Review 8:ThThe breakfast was good
Review 9:Only 5 parking spaces. Didn't get the room which was booked. Toilet broke in the night. A wet cigarette on the window cill when we arises which makes me think twice about the cleaning. The windows were so dirty for what would have been an amazing view was ruined. Not a polite welcoming. The shower had no power what so ever. The pillows where really hard. Only 1 socket to use as the other had the tv. Spoke to another couple staying the same time as us and there view was the same
Review 10:Location was great. Breakfast was amazing
Review 11:Room upgraded.Hate to think what other rooms were like.Shower did not work.Asked for it to be looked at.Had to ask again in the evening.New shower head on.No pressure in shower at all.Stairs needed a good hoover.Breakfast very poor choice.Juice, cereals, porridge, cooked breakfast. No fruit, yoghurt, etc.on offer.Picked this hotel because of its location near to our relatives but will use the Premier Inn or Travel Lodge in future.
Review 12:location.
Review 13:Lovely Clean Comfortable Room , Friendly Staff , Fantastic Breakfast , Great Location , Great Value for Money , Can't Fault it and Highly Recommend it.
Review 14:Parking was very limited but free areas of parking available nearby.
Review 15:Staff were very friendly. Breakfast was excellent would highly recommend. Would stay again.
Review 16:only issue was the bathroom. Newly refurbished but there was very low water pressure in the shower. Made if very difficult to wash the children and our hair. There was also a funny smell
Review 17:The staff were very welcoming and the hotel was in an excellent position. The room was large and airy and extremely clean with a nice bathroom. Breakfast was really lovely.
Review 18:Late breakfast from 8am, very matter of fact reception, poor wi-if. More like a hostel than a hotel. Room had all frosted windows which made it feel like a public lavatory.
Review 19:Limited free parking
Review 20:Sparse bedroom furniture, poor decor in hallways. Asked for early breakfast was offered 'continental' was given 2 slices toast served on a saucer!
Review 21:Location and excellent en suite
Review 22:The outside was a bit tatty but nothing a coat of paint couldn't fix. And not enough parking spaces
Review 23:It was a last minute booking and for the price I wasn't expecting to much. But I was pleasantly surprised the location was excellent right across from the beach. And the room was spacious and clean and breakfast was lovely
Review 24:Great location , fabulous welcoming staff , outstanding value for money very clean and comfortable , we could not believe how nice this was considering how much we paid , we would def come again
Review 25:the absence of a lift, the stairs are quite steep.
Review 26:the location is perfect, friendly staff, breakfast was superb, excellent value for money. only 15 minutes walk from the station.
Review 27:Parking is an issue as its very limited.
Review 28:The room was lovely with large bay windows over looking the sea front. The bathroom small but spotless and modern. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Dining room was lovely and spacious and the breakfast excellent. Would definitely stay again.
Review 29:The only issue we had was the lack of parking behind the hotel, we had to park on the side of the road and move the car later.
Review 30:We really enjoyed our stay the room was clean and suited our needs. We would definitely stay again.
Review 31:Spacious, clean, quiet bedroom and shower-room Everything worked and the bed was comfortable. Efficient check-in. Good breakfast and service in the dining room. All in all a very pleasant stay!
Review 32:Security. I was awoken by a intruder at 2am who had retained a key from a previous stay and was looking for some left property. I was not contacted re the outcome despite a couple of phone calls nor was recompensed for my unwanted experience which could have been life threatening.
Review 33:The breakfast and the ideas for refurbishment by the owner.
Review 34:Wifi not working on day 2.
Review 35:Overlooking the sea - great views. Staff were brilliant and very friendly. Large rooms with plenty of space and spotlessly clean/
Review 36:Lack of onsite parking, Shower Head very small. Would have liked 2 Eggs, 2 Bacon with Breakfast (otherwise nice). No Evening Meal.Bathroom needs Rubber Bath Mat.
Review 37:Friendly, Clean, Good Staff, Good Service, Cooking good.
Review 38:Breakfast not served until 8am - with an early ferry to catch this was too late, though staff did offer cold option No wifi in rooms
Review 39:Great seaside location Comfortable nights sleep Friendly staff Good pizzeria nearby Free overnight parking
Review 40:The toilet flush wasn't working properly.
Review 41:It was clean!. The staff are all friendly. Very accessible to restaurants, beach and amusement. We have a very nice view of the beach in our family room. Very delicious breakfast.
Review 42:This was my second stay at this hotel which is a reference ! The welcome was good, the service was efficient and the hotel, facing the sea is very well located; The room was correct and I appreciated the free car park facility.
Review 43:We booked a standard double room n ended up with family toom n it was spacious wish we stayed longer staff where friendly n helpfull and the breakfast was lovely would cone back again and hotel right near pier shops and amusments
Review 44:Parking was a nightmare. Room was not hoovered daily. Bed had to be made up after a complaint by me. The proprietor was not too happy to deal with my complaining about his staff's shortcomings. The serving staff were on job training, and there were many instances of food being incorrectly ordered, and delivered to the table before the previous course had been finished. When sent away, the food was returned look warm.
Review 45:Our room was big, and had a good sea view, which we paid for.
Review 46:Could have done with a lift as we were on the second floor.Parking was a bit of a problem not always available
Review 47:Room was clean and pleasant.Breakfast was very good
Review 48:The hotel is a rip off,the price offered on ur website does not reflecta real reduction in price. The manager was too clever by half.So much sothat although he had already debited my debit card I could not bringmyself to stay there so travelled home on a very busy Friday evening.
Review 49:It felt a little like a prison room, plain bare walls and the telly was tiny and about 5ft away from the end if the bed, so I moved the draw unit closer. breakfast is only served between 8am & 9am which is no good for the working person. But it was clean and comfy. So perfect if you only need a room to sleep in.
Review 50:It was £42 and it was an ensuit room that was quiet clean and comfy enough. Right on the sea front.
Review 51:Breakfast was satisfactory but too late for us (starts at 8am). Showers were too hot and low pressure. Barely had wifi or phone signal. Parking was very limited. Public areas smelt funny.
Review 52:Good location near seafront and restaurants.
Review 53:The breakfast was too greasy and gave me an upset stomach. The owners, though nice, weren't at the reception when we arrived, just to show the hospitality wasn't great, it lacked that personal touch.
Review 54:The bed was very comfortable, although I thought having a deluxe suite would mean a big double bed or a king size but it was just a standard double which wasn't roomy enough. The sea view was great and the location too, as it was near the sea/pier/restaurant and shops.
Review 55:The only downside was the parking. There are only a few spaces at the back of the hotel and although there is on street parking some of it was for only 4 hours so we had to park a few streets away from the hotel for the first night.
Review 56:The beds were comfortable and the rooms were very clean. Staff were friendly and helpful and the full breakfast was excellent. Location was right next to the pier, shops and restaurants.
Review 57:We really enjoyed our stay here. This is a family run hotel and all the staff were always smiling and happy to see us. The full English breakfast was just the best!!! Yummy!! we are looking forward to our next stay.
Review 58:Bathroom small but modern but shower only just works as poor water pressure. We were fine but a lack of central heating could be a problem in colder periods.
Review 59:Great location - we had a large family room with sea view.
Review 60:It was a nice day room was clean and tidy and comfortable however it don 't matter to much but I smelled a bit of a bad smell in the bar and the the reception area but other than that I had a very comfortable stay
Review 61:The lock on the window out to balcony in room 3 needs improving. Only held together by a little bolt the actual handle door lock did not work.
Review 62:The breakfast was lovely.
Review 63:Mold on toast at breakfast, building site under window.Hole in floor under carpet in bedroom.
Review 64:Friendly staff to greet us on arrival, clean refurbished room.
Review 65:The bathroom had just had a refit but needs attention. i.e shower spray head too low over bath, towel rail fell off and no grab bar for older visitors to help climb out of slippy bath. \towels too small
Review 66:Pleasant staff, good location, good sized room and very good breakfast
Review 67:A leak coming into the room from the floor above, luckily it was in the morning as we were leaving and not just as we were going to bed. I realie its one of those things that do happen in hotels, so it didn't spoli my stay.
Review 68:The spaciousness of the room and the availability of the balcony
Review 69:The door to our room, presumably a fire door had a massive gap around it and wouldn't have kept any fire out. With our bedroom lights switched off the landing lights outside shone thru the door frame. Unbelievably we were woken at 5.30 am On a weekend morning by a j c b digger working on the beach a few hundred yards away.
Review 70:The newly refurbished breakfast room, the breakfast itself and the new shower room and toilet facilities in the bedroom. The member of staff on duty at breakfast was very helpful and very pleasant.
Review 71:The shower was difficult not very powerful and had a job to get it hot, would not pay full price for that room. we stayed as it was an offer.
Review 72:The location is good with limited parking, the room was spacious and very clean, the breakfast was excellent served by a lovely lady nothing was too much trouble
Review 73:I would suggest new pillows and a memory foam topper for the beds. Fruit and yogurt available at breakfast.
Review 74:Very spacious room .lovely shower probably the best i have had in a while,as the water seemed so soft :-). perfect location right on the sea front ,close to town yet still tranquil.
Review 75:room was very plain, parking is very limited although there is free parking nearby.
Review 76:hotel is as close to the beach as possible, was cheap, staff were nice, breakfast was good.
Review 77:Double bed mattress in the family room was somewhat lumpy. Single bed mattresses were fine.
Review 78:Family room was very spacious. Lots of room to move about. Hotel on the seaside promenade overlooking the sea - lovely setting and quiet. Close enough to all of Clacton's amenities.
Review 79:Limited parking at the actual hotel but very good facilities - not if using the car during the day and trying to come back to same spot - on street generous parking alongside. Wifi throughout hotel necessary soon instead of just in public rooms.
Review 80:Esplanade Hotel, Clacton. Sensible renovation of a well-placed hotel in quiet part of Esplanade, comfortable and well-managed. All anticipated facilities, except the restaurant, currently awaiting a new entrepreneur to run what is a tidy restaurant with potential! Good opportunity for a young chef. Parking limited at the hotel but generous parking timings on adjacent streets, 3 hours, ending at 6pm, starting at 9am which enables free parking until 12 noon next day. Wifi only in downstairs public rooms currently but I found no problem with this. Excellent breakfast, pleasant managing staff and good bar/lounge Wetherspoon eatery close by and I used The Crown at Ardleigh a pleasant short drive away. A good overnight or two-nighter at modest prices - and deals. I shall use this hostelry again when visiting friends locally.
Review 81:Bathroom, no heating, radiator poor heat in bedroom, can not control the heating bathroom floor tiles very cold, workmen leaving tools laying around outside od where they worked, ironing board ripped cover
Review 82:Very clean comfortable bed
Review 83:The hotel location is excellent staff are very good. No wifi connection very poor. The owner should be more flexible so that it could help in the future specially winter time there is not a lot to around. 4 pm it's already dark you are confine to your room with nothing to do and a poortv
Review 84:Lounge bar shabby and needs better lighting, large shower looked brand new but there was no water pressure or in fact hot water! Needs tidying up.
Review 85:Staff were very pleasant, the room was spotless with nice view and bed very comfortable. Good breakfast in a spacious dining room.
Review 86:We were visiting our family in Clacton for the weekend, The room was very clean, comfortable and warm, staff were very friendly, Breakfast very good if you wanted full English or just cerial or even porriage which was nice, yes we would book again, Thank you.
Review 87:TV a very long way from bed, door closer very fierce so difficult to get out , no shelf in bathroom- silly snags which are easily sorted
Review 88:Breakfast very good, room newly refurbished and comfortable. Shower excellent when you found how to drive it.
Review 89:the fact that there was no hot water for a shower as it didn't get turned on until 7 am and still cold at 730 am
Review 90:we liked the size of the room and how clean it was the staff so pleasant and the food was very good
Review 91:wallpaper hanging down, electric cables out of the wall without any protection, missing plinths, walls half painted, plastering missing on walls, webs on lights, room very cold, heating off at night, dirty windows, no mat to go out of shower.. terrible hotel
Review 92:shower wasn't too bad
Review 93:HOTEL BEING COMPLETELY REFUBISHED, WITHOUT BEING INFORMED OF THIS WHEN BOOKING. OUR REFURBISHED ROOM WAS COLD LOOKING BORING AND BLAND. VERY BASIC.
Review 94:THE RECEPIONIST / BAR STAFF
Review 95:Having to ask to put the heating on in our room. Paper thin duvet Having to wait 10 minutes for water in shower to heat up. Staff seemed a little miserable, including manager.
Review 96:Location. Breakfast was the best I have had in a hotel.
Review 97:We returned to the hotel in the evening there was a young man on duty definitely did not have the customer skills of the girl earlier we had to go find him to get a drink and his complete attitude was one of being bothered he did not say a word except £3.50 which was the cost of the drink no thank you nothing definitely put a damper on it Sea view would have been nice but for the peeling paint on the window sill accompanied by pigeon/seagull mess on the sills and windows
Review 98:On arrival the greeting form the girl on the desk was friendly and welcoming the room wasn't ready but the same girl served us a drink at the bar. The whole area appeared at first glance clean but with a definite smell of paint Breakfast in the morning was very good and female staff very friendly again
Review 99:The family room was huge, with views of the sea. There were two single beds and a double, which was perfect. Very quiet and good clean bathroom facilities. The full English breakfast was delicious! Would definitely book again.
Review 100:owner not particularly welcoming shower had nowhere for soap/shower gel shower took 15mins to warm up no hot water to basin unless shower had been used no radiator in bathroom very small towel for use after showering no wardrode layout of room noise/voices from below echoed in room fire doors permanently open
Review 101:location clean room good breakfast very obliging waiting staff at breakfast
Review 102:The water pressure was weak and the shower in room 23 did not flow very fast and took at least 5 minutes to get hot. There was no running hot water to wash basin...it only became hot after using the shower. There was no radiator in the bathroom. My room was opposite the fire door, the door was open and led out to a balcony. I could not see an exit.I checked from the back of the building where I could see my room and could not see how in the event of a fire one would be able to escape. I also noticed that all the firedoors leading to upstairs were always fixed open.
Review 103:Excellent breakfast....cereals,fruit juice full English cooked breakfast. Nice situation on seafront and easy walking distance to and from railway station.
Review 104:Doors slam, mattress a little too soft and a little lumpy, t.v cable not the best connection. Could do with full length mirror and closer to outlet for hair dryer.
Review 105:New appointment s, controllable heat and ventilation, wonderful staff, decent breakfast, good location for sea front and town,
Review 106:no restaurant for evening meal had to park on the road limited car park spaces hotel should not be open whilst the refurbishing is going on the reception area and stairs were striped of wallpaper and wiring was showing and it smelt of paint
Review 107:location Large bedroom with balcony (but it was not an advantage in October
Review 108:Very little parking. Being refurbished so smell of paint everywhere. Kept awake till 4am by loud music and people coming and going from room next to us. Night porter did nothing until we complained at 3am. Four people in a twin room but did not ask them to leave. Spoke to reception in the morning but they knew nothing about it. Would never recommend this hotel to anyone.
Review 109:The shower took half hour of running it to get warm water then it got hotter was not very powerful at all so was disappointed. The breakfast starts at 8 am we had to leave the hotel at 7 30 am so missed breakfast that they offered as part of our stay. Reception said we may get offered toast and yoghurt at 7.30am but on going downstairs past the restaurant it was all locked up in the dark so we signed out the hotel
Review 110:Liked the position of the hotel sea views from Window was lovely
Review 111:There was not a restaurant on site as stated. Hotel is in the middle of massive refurbishment. Would have preferred a ground floor room as I have walking difficulties, but I had not specifically requested one. But on arrival one was not offered.
Review 112:Convenience, parking, size of bedroom and bathroom.
Review 113:Being asked for payment on arrival by dour receptionist and having to ask for receipt for cash payment. Insufficient towels. Remote control worked spasmodically had to switch on/off at the socket. Car parking abysmal.
Review 114:Breakfast was adequate. Dining room staff helpful and pleasant.
Review 115:Only improvement I will say is for them to fix the heating to work better and for the manager to get 2 extra staff. Those young ladies are juggling so many things at once which can be overwhelming.
Review 116:I was a bit skeptical due to some reviews online but this place is amazing. The room and shower/toilet was super super clean. They had a beautiful tea tray set up as well as complimentary soap and body wash. The English breakfast was superb. The staff here work really hard. Also the location was perfect too and I will definitely be coming back.
Review 117:Hotel was being refurbished so may have been something to do with that but I didn't have a very good night sleep with vibrating noises, rattling, banging and squeaky floorboards and could hear the room next door talking and using toilet. However I stayed 2 nights and second night no noises at all
Review 118:Breakfast was very nice Staff very friendly and helpful Location perfect for town centre and attractions
Review 119:Grumpy staff, cigarette smell, paint smell, very uncomfortable bed, only Luke warm water in shower, shower very poor power, only one hand towel between two of us and bath towels tiny, no wi fi in room. Certainly not a superior double as booking.come described.
Review 120:Sea view was nice
Review 121:I think if a hotel is in the process of being decorated they should let people know . The smell of paint hits you as soon as you walk in,my girlfriend suffered runney eyes and nose through the nite because of this had we known we would have gone elsewere
Review 122:Breakfast
Review 123:We loved the location, staff were understanding and helpful and the first room we stayed in, facing the beach was amazing.
Review 124:No option of evening meal in hotel. Poor bar facilities. Very limited car parking available. One very minor irritation was that there was no soap dish in the shower.
Review 125:Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent breakfast. Clean and comfortable room. Good location.
Review 126:Freezing, unheated water for shower AND handbasin - which is a shame: as the bathrooms have beautiful floor-tiling and nice new showers. On 2nd day i DID shower in cold water. WI-FI was NOT really available, my husband had to ask the hotel owner about 3 times: first it wasn't working, then to 'receive' the wi'fi 'code' and then 'password' - and it STILL was not working.
Review 127:Hotel is within easy walking distance of town centre. The COOKING is a good quality. Breakfasts are good (individually cooked - so allow extra time) The few, over-worked staff ARE nice. SUNDAY CARVERY was very good. from £7.95 for the Main Course -but served on to your plate by the staff at the Buffet Counter, +Starters: £2.75-£3 plus Puddings started at approx £3. There IS some free car parking at rear of hotel. but be careful because of the on-going building work Skip.
Review 128:When we first walked into hotel there was an overwhelming smell of paint thinners which stayed in the hotel for the whole week. Bed sheets not changed all week and sometimes not made bathroom just given a wipe over instead of a full clean and carpets not cleaned on a daily basis. Manager very condescending towards guests. Very limited car parking facilities.
Review 129:Location. Apart from the manager the other staff very nice and helpful.
Review 130:Quite limited parking and we had to park on restricted bay one day. The noise at night from revellers can be a bit disturbing as well as traffic noise.
Review 131:The hotel was excellently placed on the sea front with shops and amusements very nearby though far away enough not to bother you. Bed linen and towels crisply white and the room was a generous size. Yummy breakfast and very reasonably priced.
Review 132:Run down hotel that could use a lick of paint and a good scrub down.Squeaky floors, overly soft matresses, broken sink that wouldn'tempty, no hot water in the shower, opaque glass in the windows, insufficient light in the room - even with the bulb on, walls so thinyou can hear everything in all the other rooms, bad smells in thecorridors, smallest tv in the world, grumpy boss woman in the morning, deco from the 1940s, dirty room, just about everything else
Review 133:One nice waitress at breakfast was cheery and polite. I think she wasPolish or German.
Review 134:Very loud Reggae music/party of which we were not informed about when booking, and some of our party were unable to rest in the afternoon or go to bed until after 11pm.
Review 135:Locality
The Fine Print
Please note that free parking spaces are limited but it is possible to park nearby.Free WiFi is available in most rooms.
