Reviews for The Crown Hotel
Review 1:The hotel seems to be going through a refurbishment programme; areas of the bathroom floor had plaster/grouting on it.
Review 2:Location is excellent; staff on front desk are very good indeed.
Review 3:There was an event on the evening that I stayed; what I really objected to was that I had to walk through a wall of smokers and lit cigarettes to re-enter the hotel
Review 4:The room needed an airing, we were not able to open the window! I imagine this could be uncomfortable in the summer months with the lack of air conditioning. We were lucky to secure a place in the hotel car park. However, otherwise, substantial parking charges would have been incurred. Consider a special rate arrangement with a nearby car park for guests?
Review 5:The central location, the grand building, cleanliness of the room.
Review 6:Lighting was a bit poor and not enough sockets
Review 7:The attentiveness of the staff was excellent and the room was spacious and clean. Would definitely stay here again
Review 8:Parking is minimal Rooms are very basic and grubby and need attention Grand Hall looses appeal with bad lights and modern furniture Food is catering quality, broken tinned fruit and tasteless baked beans. Whilst staff are very pleasant, the uniform needs improvement
Review 9:Location Attractive Hotel Outside Pleasant staff
Review 10:Disco right under our room. We were advised of this on checking in but by then we'd booked...it was incredibly loud...I would recommend people check first as my daughter needed sleep for as dimming competition and didn't get much!
Review 11:Location was great and breakfast was really good
Review 12:On Friday evening the hot water was tepid at best. On Sat morning it was hot but only after running it for several minutes. This is undoubtedly because of the distance it had to travel throughout the length of the hotel.
Review 13:Welcome and helpfulness of staff. Food was good both at breakfast and dinner. Fortunately, we parked straight away on arrival, but spaces are tight.
Review 14:Poor room on first night but when we complained the staff did all they could to move our room and gave us a discount for the first night.
Review 15:Very friendly and helpful staff. Impressive Victorian reception lounge area.
Review 16:Windows don t open. Too hot. No air con. Reported broken bathroom light but not fixed
Review 17:Location. Beautiful historic building food Comfortable bed. Large room. Friendly staff
Review 18:Would hv liked a games room (pool or table tennis table, or table football) for the kids, but maybe it's not that type of hotel.
Review 19:Great location in town centre and lovely, grand old building inside and out. Parking a bit of a problem, but overall good value for money and will definitely stay there again.
Review 20:Nothing not do dislike
Review 21:What's not to like £44 pound for a large twin room with a stunning bathroom and a HD TV smack in the art of the city even gave me a parking disc free of charge
Review 22:A bit picky, but the top of the cold tap was missing. Floor was creaky, but this is probably "character". Lots of slamming doors in the morning, but the hotel can't be blamed for that.
Review 23:All staff were excellent, friendly and knew their jobs. Location was fine but there were few options for dining in the area, could be as it was the Sunday after Christmas. Would hope to return, perhaps for a longer break.
Review 24:Only downside is the lack of parking…but not such an issue to be honest
Review 25:Excellent location, fantastic hotel with wonderful history. Great clean room, lovely comfy beds too. Wonderful
Review 26:At breakfast there was a lack of consideration by the waiting staff; taking plates and cutlery off the table without leaving a knife for the toast yet to be buttered, a small thing but a nuicense because it takes time to remedy.
Review 27:Have stayed at this hotel now three times and look forward to doing so again
Review 28:The first room we were given was dark with two small windows looking onto a brick wall. We asked if we could be moved and poppy on reception immediately gave us a room with a large bay window and a view of the market square . We would definitely return .
Review 29:Explained we were attending a funeral, so could we get into a room just to change. Was told "not possible until 2.00/3.00pm and use the toilets downstairs". Made to feel we were trying to get "something for nothing". After travelling 250 miles for a funeral would have preferred a little more compassion, than the standard pre programmed lines from the staff.
Review 30:Price, room size
Review 31:Great location - quiet but central. We left a very important teddy bear behind but he was retrieved and kept safely in the hotel safe until we were reunited! The hotel staff were really helpful.
Review 32:Limited parking spaces.
Review 33:Ideally located for the shops ,restaurants etc. The staff were first class ,efficient and friendly. The hotel was busy but we heard no noise in our room and the bed was most comfortable . We had a hearty Yorkshire breakfast which was excellent.
Review 34:Nothing
Review 35:The room a short walk from the lift for my wife who has mobility problems. It's just a nice hotel to be in. If we are back in this area again would definitely stay again.
Review 36:Great hotel, great location, professional friendly staff. This hotel is always our first go to when visiting Harrogate. The hotel itself is beautiful and oozes charm. The rooms are large and clean and breakfast is a great variety of self serve tastiness! The room rates for Harrogate are great value too.
Review 37:We liked that the staff were so helpful and pleasant, the comfort of the hotel and the location. The bed was really comfortable and everywhere was clean.
Review 38:We arrived at 2pm, in all the corridors on all landings there were still bags of bedding, and also empty pizza boxes outside room doors. waited 10 minutes for someone to serve a drink at the bar, and that was 5pm at a weekend in December, so gave up
Review 39:I requested a room next to/near our friends but was given one on the same floor but in opposite directions. I reminded the Receptionist when I booked in but she seemed reluctant to try to sort anything out. Not a major problem but the only little fault we could find....
Review 40:Hotel convenient for Harrogate town centre; Really good breakfast Pleasant room with a comfortable bed and a good bathroom.
Review 41:To find after I had checked out three hours later I rang to find my phone charger was not found in room which was my fault for leaving it but somebody found it when they cleaned it .
Review 42:Location nice room
Review 43:We were able to turn off the radiator but there were hot water pipes running down the wall and across the floor which made our first night uncomfortably hot.
Review 44:Convenience and character. Our room was at the back and was therefore lovely and quiet.
Review 45:Decorations could do with a bit of a lift
Review 46:The location was excellent. The staff were very good, helpful and professional. The rooms were spacious. The buffet breakfast was excellent as were the waiting staff.
Review 47:The reception desk is tiny and we had to wait to check in a little longer than you would if they had a larger desk and more staff
Review 48:The room was big and the bathroom was a nice size. The location is brilliant and the hotel has lots of little querky features that you dont find in new hotels that give character. The breakfast was excellent.
Review 49:Lack of lighting in the bedroom, could not see to read. The breakfast was almost cold and scrambled egg was awful.
Review 50:The suite was very spacious.the reception was very friendly and efficient.
Review 51:Not a bad experience as such but a party taking place in the churchill suite, right under our room was quite noisy
Review 52:Very friendly and helpful staff. lovely breakfast with plenty of choice
Review 53:The building is gorgeous, but being old comes with its drawbacks, mainly the very creaky floorboards! Every step I took around my room made the floor creak!
Review 54:Gorgeous hotel, great location and friendly helpful staff
Review 55:Limited on-site customer parking.
Review 56:We were given a free upgrade and the room given was excellent. The breakfast is great and the location couldn't be better. All the staff we met were very polite, helpful and welcoming.
Review 57:Despite having paid for breakfast within the rate the receptionist insisted that I was only on a room only rate.
Review 58:Nice size room and good choice for breakfast
Review 59:We had a sandwich in the bar area, the bread was dry and tasteless.
Review 60:All staff were both friendly and professional. The bedroom was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very good. The bar was warm and welcoming
Review 61:The windows must be single glazing and the noise from outside kept waking me up. There were people messing about in the street at 2 am and woke me up. There was a function on at the hotel so I'm not sure if it was the fallout of that but had a disturbed nights sleep because of it.
Review 62:Great hotel, lovely facilities, clean and tidy, bed was comfy and there was a huge bathroom! Ordered room service and it was gorgeous food!
Review 63:One of the beds was old-could feel the springs. Room far to hot and when I opened the window was met by a disgusting filthy drainpipe and rubbish.
Review 64:Location
Review 65:Query over payment. Realise some people are dishonest. But please improve your system and inform all staff especially over payment for food.
Review 66:Great location. Parking. Friendly staff. Bedroom well equipped. Lovely breakfast.
Review 67:Absolutely nothing!Everything!
Review 68:Everything about the place was spot on. Lovely building, staff professional yet friendly. Comfortable room, good food; what's not to like?
Review 69:the windows in bedroom kept me awake at night rattling had to put paper in to wedge it shut
Review 70:the lounge was a lovely place to sit in the afternoon and the breakfast was wonderfull the staff very helpfull
Review 71:I booked two double rooms thought booking.com and we were given large single rooms one with a three quarter bed. The receptionist said we couldn't do anything as booked on the Internet. £138 per room a lot of money ffor r a single room for a couple.
Review 72:Hotel very nice as we have styled there before.
Review 73:My room was situated right next to the cleaners cupboard and the main staircase in out out divided by two swinging doors. The door to my room was also next to a second set of steps due to the nature of the building. Therefore the noise every night from people going up and down the steps and the doors banging was horrendous. Equally as everyone got up in the morning. Followed by the cleaners. Not to mention the kitchen air vents outside the window! 2 completely sleepless nights. Waste of money.
Review 74:Great location and great decor
Review 75:Main bar out of the way and not specific to the hotel, hotel guest bar did not open until 23-00hrs, far too late.
Review 76:Staff went out of way to sort small issues
Review 77:Room very hot although had no heating on and requested a fan .Had the fan on overnight in November!
Review 78:Position of the hotel great for the venue and the shops. Reception was slow to book in and out, staff all nice. Best hotel breakfast I have had.
Review 79:I have requested late check out (1pm). It was accepted by the reception on my arrival. But it was clearly ignored by the Housekeeping Team who where knocking my door after 11am (while I was on Conference call) and the Reception Teams, as they call me at 12pm and told me that my car need to be moved from the hotel's car park! Very disappointed with that!
Review 80:The breakfast supervisor (Irena) was fantastic! Very professional, helpful lady with a wonderful personality. Great ambassador for The Crown Hotel! Well done and Thank You!
Review 81:BED HAD BETTER DAYS, HAIRDRIER BASIC
Review 82:FRIENDLY WELCOME AT RECEPTION, QUICKLY AND EFFICIANTLY CHECKED IN. SPACIOUS ROOM AND BATHROOM, CLEAN AND ALL EXTRAS PROVIDED. BED HAD BETTER DAYS BUT OK. UNABLE TO COMMENT FURTHER AS DIDN'T EAT AT THE HOTEL. WOULD RETURN AS LOCATION GOOD
Review 83:Too noisy. We were on the first floor. The couple above our room fought until 2am. Shouting, screaming and swearing. We felt like they were standing next to us!
Review 84:The staff are outstanding. So helpful. The staff make the hotel and the location too.
Review 85:overall maintenance is not good. The window sill and part of the frame of the room window have lost their paint and the wood is badly rotted. The walls and ceiling are thin so noise from neighbouring rooms comes through easily.
Review 86:Spacious room, friendly staff and central location
Review 87:Terrible parking situation, if you didn't manage to park in the limited spaced there was a 1 mile walk to park.
Review 88:Excellent breakfast, great location, comfortable beds, clean rooms.
Review 89:Bar was very basic and didn't even have a cocktail menu so we went elsewhere. Reception was so concerned about training new girl we were totally ignored & had to ask if we could check in after 5 minutes of waiting to be acknowledged. Parking is a nightmare!
Review 90:Breakfast was good but fairly expensive.
Review 91:Rooms need updating. Very spacious & comfortable bed, however The room was very dark and basic. Our room did not look like the photos on the hotel website.
Review 92:The staff of booking team was very unfriendly!!! she made a mistake without any apologize and with a rude attitude!!! She said is my mistake but finally she realize her fault, just like nothing happened !! Unbelievable!!
Review 93:Room badly in need of refurbishment. Creaking floorboards. Brick wall outside window and therefore no view whatsoever. Stained carpet and water marks on ceiling. Very noisy as could hear guests returning late at night. No parking at all available. Would not pay £110 per night for this room in this hotel again. Reception staff very unfriendly.
Review 94:In a central position.
Review 95:Parking is non existent ...car park very small and full of vans on Thursday and Friday night. Rooms extremely hot despite turning heating off..could hear everything from room next door and were woken at 4:30am by the volume of noise! Staff in restaurant very disinterested. Shower was very poor
Review 96:Great position in easy walking distance to town
Review 97:The room was unbelievably hot, there was only one towel which was annoying as I had washed my hair and had nothing to dry it, the carpets were a bit old and musty and the shower was very weak.
Review 98:Great location and good size room.
Review 99:there was no clarity over our requests. we requested a late check out which we assumed had been granted because there was no notion otherwise, but as soon as 11:15 hit we were hounded by cleaning staff and given phone calls explaining that check out is 11:00. its not an issue, I just thing that answers to requests need to be better communicated.
Review 100:spacious room, comfortable bed, lovely grand building in a superb location.
Review 101:Noisy floorboards. Being at the front was good for views but a bit noisy early morning. Mid week, could have done with some deals on meals and drinks.
Review 102:Location. Reception and bar/restaurant staff helpful etc. Plenty of character. Room was a good size and clean. Good view over that area of Harrogate. Our 2 night rate was very reasonable. Enjoyed the one evening meal we had at the hotel. Managed to get a car park space for both nights.
Review 103:Cobwebs in the bedroom. Paid for breakfast but the they didn't put us on the list then they tried to charge us again for breakfast when we had paid.
Review 104:The location was excellent. The hotel is lovely and breakfast selection was excellent.
Review 105:Rooms could do with a little updating, but the Crown is a old hotel so I expected this. Not enough parking spaces for all the guests, but there is parking nearby.
Review 106:Bar area modern and comfortable, good selection at breakfast, position of hotel was ideal, within easy walking distance to all attractions. The rooms were large and comfortable .
Review 107:We were knocked upon three different times, possibly by the cleaner, who opened the door to come in uninvited and well before we were due to leave. We ordered a continental breakfast, under the impression that it was much cheaper than it actually was, as the actual price (£10 per person) was not listed on the menu but "a breakfast charge of £2.50", was listed.
Review 108:Location and room were decent enough.
Review 109:The light switch entering the room didn't work nor did the extractor in the bathroom or the bedside lamp. The decor in the room felt tired
Review 110:The staff were friendly and helpful
Review 111:As we travel from Scotland to the crown, the on site parking can be concerning as space is limited during busy periods
Review 112:Good location breakfasts always excellent good wide choice
Review 113:I required two rooms, preferably with double beds, The website didn't offer this. The staff didn't offer a further choice. There was a very disruptive noise around 2.00 am
Review 114:Location. Staff. Breakfast.
Review 115:Room was far too warm, breakfast disappointing, no espresso available, kippers were extra don't expect this in a 4* hotel
Review 116:The attitude of the staff
Review 117:Smokers outside the entrance. First time I have ever had a room downgrade ! Booked a suite got an ordinary room. Hotel blamed booking.com for not advising me ...a poor show indeed. I still payed the suite rate agreed with booking.com I will be staying at the ship hotel around the corner in future.
Review 118:Location and the hottest room I have ever stayed in ! The heating was defiantly on this time. On my last visit the only thing missing was the Huskies !
Review 119:Room comfortable but dated. There were only about 10 customers in the bar but took ages to get served- bar staff busy doing admin.
Review 120:Beautiful reception area
Review 121:I stayed at the crown hotel on Saturday 3rd October. I treated my friend for her birthday. When we arrived i was informed that there was a function but that it shouldn't effect our stay. Due to being out during the day we decided to stay in on the evening as we had plans on the Sunday. We were given room 144 which I can only assume was directly over the hall where the function was. A live band till 12am! I understand that we were told but I wouldn't recommend you put guests who aren't with the wedding party in the room above. Not only were we unable to sleep till the music stopped I was left with a headache and due to noise was unable to enjoy a relaxing (which on the website is what it said I would receive) evening. I'm disappointed that after paying £107 for a room for one night i was unable to enjoy my time away and for that reason I wouldn't return to the hotel. In future when booking the hotel guests should be informed that these functions are on
Review 122:Staff were friendly rooms were clean and comfortable.
Review 123:The only problem we did have was the original booking when a cheaper price was first quoted then increased as a mistake by the hotel and booking. com. The good news was after a compromise the final bill was cheaper at check out!
Review 124:The rooms were very clean, large and to a high standard. We were lucky to get a parking space at the hotel so the car was there all the time. Even though there was a wedding on each of the days, the service and staff was good to the other hotel guests.
Review 125:We had a dark uncomfortable room looking out onto a wall about a metre and a half away. Very hot due to the old pipe work running through. The walls had dirty marks on them and there was lots of noise from the function room below us.
Review 126:Fantastic location of this characterful hotel. The place bar and restaurant was lovely with friendly welcoming staff. Great breakfast and a wonderful room to eat it in.
Review 127:lighting in the room a little dim and we would have preferred a walk in shower rather than one over the bath
Review 128:Room very spaciuos ,clean and bed very comfortable - Breakfast very impressive, pleanty of choice
Review 129:Staff ok, but I bet they could not tell you what we looked like. Remote didn't work, bed felt more like a double not a king. Room ok, but would not class it as an 'Excutive'.
Review 130:Poor quality breakfast - bacon looked like it had been boiled, scrambled eggs were like rubber, coffee arrived instead of tea, table wasn't set, croissants were stale, they ran out of orange juice. Staff expected us to get out of the way when passing in doorways or corridors and bumped into us a couple of times. Door key didn't work so had to get a new one from reception - no apology or explanation. We had to park the car about 800 metres away as there is only parking for about 24 cars. Entire building is very tired looking but does have some great features architecturally. Very annoyed that we spent so much on the room for two nights when there are plenty more hotels to choose from.
Review 131:Central location Reception staff were generally friendly
Review 132:Not much parking space. We arrived early do luckily got one on forecourt.
Review 133:So close to lots of restaurants, shops, and tourist attractions. Easy to find .
Review 134:The huge hot water pipe running throughout the hotel but making the bedroom so ridiculously hot you couldn't sleep. Not helped by the fact that the windows didn't open. The night batman who didn't know how to pull a pint or serve a customer
Review 135:Brilliant location for seeing Harrogate. Very central.
Review 136:People smoking right outside main door and having to walk through it to get in and out, having to park the car away from the hotel then having to move it before 9 am and then come back for breakfast, one bar closed at 10.30 and one in the foyer opened at 11 so had to take drinks through even if not finished, you could not pay with cash at the bar and you needed your room card to put it on your room - no one told us this/no sign.
Review 137:The room was quiet at night
Review 138:Not enough parking space, so had to park on a side street. Was given a parking disc. Which would have been very useful had I needed a longer parking span
Review 139:Food was very good, and not overpriced. Room upgrade. My original room was above the function room, party going on so I was moved to a quieter room.
Review 140:Noise in the bathroom when light was switched on, but there was no extractor fan? On one occasion during the night the noise remained for a while when the light was switched off. I did not report the issue until leaving so probably a little unfair to criticise.
Review 141:Pleasantly surprised by the hotel quality given that it is more than 15 years since the previous visit when it was somewhat tired.
