Reviews for St Michael's Manor Hotel - St Albans

Review 1:front desk staff are not as nice as others. Restaurant for dinner is very expensive.

Review 2:Very pleasant place to which I return again and again. Lovely setting, excellent rooms especially in new wing. Excellent food and wait staff. Great medieval village section of town. excellent breakfast and bar sandwiches.

Review 3:above all the location overlooking a beautiful lake and the Hotel itself with antique furniture deep fitted carpets throughout and fabulous oil paintings on the walls. Just a 10 minute walk from the Abbey of St.Alban's and from the "Verulanium" museum retracing the history of the town from AD 43 and the Roman occupation.

Review 4:dinner - a la carte menu not available after calling hotel to check it was. Bedroom had no privacy as door opened on to the bed and room situated on the landing. Room also very small with unusual layout of bathroom W/C

Review 5:the bed and shower and breakfast

Review 6:Everything. I had the best New Year's eve in the most amazing hotel. From the time I pulled up to the time I left on new years day. Everything was just perfect. The room was like I was in my own private mansion with the most exceptional view. The service was 11/10. The staff were wonderful and the breakfast was tasty. The beautiful gardens just topped it off. I will definitely be back.

Review 7:Fabulous location and staff at hotel were welcoming and attentive. Our bathroom was filled with white fluffy towels, spotlessly clean, and overall room was lovely, tea and coffee facilities replenished each day - would definitely return to this hotel.

Review 8:The 'celebration dinner' was like something out of Fawlty Towers and we had the whole meal for five refunded. It did spoil the occasion. It took two and a half hours to serve a three-course meal - and the Dining Room wasn't full !

Review 9:The location was good for my family to meet up.

Review 10:Bed was too soft and the attic room got very warm at night Expected more from breakfast

Review 11:Very friendly and accommodating staff, beautiful hotel and grounds

Review 12:Limited choice of non-tea infusions. Not everyone likes mint and camomile. To be ultra-picky, how about asking breakfast guests how they want their running order? I felt a little like I was straying from the norm. There was only one other couple in the room, so waiting staff could have been a little more accommodating. But, having run my own customer service business, I'm very finicky and just trying to be helpful - overall I was extremely pleased and impressed with the whole experience.

Review 13:Bed very comfortable. Very quiet. Staff friendly and helpful. Generous parking. Fantastic view of gardens and lake from the conservatory dining room. Excellent breakfast buffet and ingredients. Will return.

Review 14:The food served for the wedding breakfast was good but disorganised coming to the tables, the following morning our breakfast was not good, bacon limp, egg stone cold.

Review 15:Great wedding venue, enjoyed our stay, got an complimentary upgrade which is always a bonus. Garden Room was fantastic

Review 16:They don't always succeed! It was too hot within the hotel, both in dining room and bedroom. No lift for 2nd floor room (listed building) - and no advance notice of this.

Review 17:They try very hard

Review 18:Not a bad experience but we were disappointed that a Deluxe room was rather ordinary and should have been called Standard! Expensive for a standard room

Review 19:The beautiful grounds and downstairs areas and proximity to the cathedral and town, also the attentive and friendly, helpful staff. The bed and pillows were supremely comfortable .

Review 20:Breakfast service was rather chaotic with obviously new staff who had no idea of their role. Shame it took shine off a little. It is something easily rectified with training.

Review 21:Beautiful setting, rooms spotless, lovely decor and quiet. Whole hotel very well looked after, lovely grounds. Would stay again.

Review 22:Not enough staff at breakfast. Had to wait ages and orders came up wrong. There seemed to be a communication problem with no-one supervising. Toast cold after waiting for more than 30 minutes. Not impressed. Free paper offered and not delivered. Was rectified only for the same thing to happen the next day. Once can be forgiven, but twice!!

Review 23:Beautiful grounds and staff very pleasant.

Review 24:Nothing

Review 25:The location and the grounds were beautiful. The staff were very helpful and the service was excellent. The food for both Dinner and Breakfast was tasty and nicely plated with a good portion size rather than being too much.

Review 26:The only thing I thought that would have been better, would have been a wardrobe in the room;there was nowhere in the room to hang clothes.

Review 27:The hotel was lovely and the gardens so pretty. I liked the fact that it was so peaceful.

Review 28:top floor rooms have very low ceilings... if you're over six foot you can't stand up in one of them no shaving mirror or fridge in superior room we stayed in bar not open until midday

Review 29:great garden upgraded to good room with garden view staff friendly but sometimes hard to find

Review 30:The hotel has no bar to speak of (a tiny room with about 4 chairs) or any communal area that it is appropriate to sit with young children. There is only one main room which is set for afternoon tea and too formal for toddlers to be. The staff clearly could not cope being fully booked. The receptionist was too busy taking bookings over the phone to either answer the calls from my room and left me waiting in person for at least 15 minutes to respond to a question. Our breakfast took over an hour to arrive by which time we had had enough of trying to keep our toddler entertained in the high chair.

Review 31:The hotel itself is very pretty and the staff were all polite and friendly.

Review 32:We spent our honeymoon there 33years ago and weren't disappointed on our return. The atmosphere and understated elegance has been retained and we hopefully will return next year. Its a lovely to place to celebrate x

Review 33:Breakfast staff were a little bit distracted, took a long time to receive cooked order and eggs were hard rather than soft (poached)

Review 34:Lovely bedroom - decor, comfy bed, large TV, power shower

Review 35:During the night on three separate occasions someone was smoking next to the air conditioning fan on the roof and the smoke filled the room, and my wife suffers from asthma which was extremely unpleasant. As it was a warm evening we needed to have the Air Con on. In the morning I did report this to the receptionist and she was to say the least very dismissive and was interested in ensuring that I paid my bill. This quite frankly ruined the stay. This was our anniversary and we where planning on bringing a group of friends at Christmas as we always get together and usually go to The Grove - however we are now reconsidering that proposal.

Review 36:Rooms are not soundproofed and was woken up every morning by either the neighbours or house-keeping rapping at the next-door room. Not a place to stay if you value a full night's sleep. Food was below expectations. Hotel overstates its status as an upscale accommodation; having stayed in some of the most sublime properties in the world, this hotel did not compare. Wifi was dodgy.

Review 37:Service was attentive and polite. Bed was very comfy. The property itself is beautiful. I was given a complementary upgrade to a premier room.

Review 38:Staff indifferent. Room small with no view. Small bathroom, bath over shower. No sound-proofing between rooms or corridor. Not value for money given £175 per night. Cleaning staff knocking at 9am despite do not disturb. Doesn't live up to 4 stars.

Review 39:Smart. Close to cathedral and centre

Review 40:Organic porridge had been left under a heat lamp for half an hour. Definitely the low point Otherwise the food was excellent especially the beef sandwiches

Review 41:Staff were excellent

Review 42:A bit of a haul up to our room on the very top floor but our cases were carried up for us on arrival. Also we were woken by bottles been thrown with force into the bin at 6a.m.

Review 43:Lovely breakfast and comfortable bed.

Review 44:Breakfast was very poor. As its a 2 star michelin restaurant, I was really looking forward to it so was left very disappointed.

Review 45:The hotel is set in the historical area of St Albans with picturesque streets and beautiful surroundings.

Review 46:Architecture, decor, friendly welcoming staff, brilliant breakfast, exquisite gardens. Fine cooking even if the waiters were a little over attentive at time, but they meant well.

Review 47:I was a little disappointed with the size of the room. It was a little cramped. I was also a little disappointed with the menu.

Review 48:The location was terrific and the whole ambience of the hotel was very good.

Review 49:The room was luxuriously appointed, the grounds are stunning, and the building itself is simply wonderful. The ambience and décor oozes class, and all of the staff are both highly professional and very friendly. Staying at St. Michael's Manor is ALWAYS an absolute pleasure.

Review 50:I did not like the attic room. felt it was a little tight and the low ceilings did not help as it kept knocking my head in the toilet and room. No elevator, so found it very difficult with my heavy luggages to go up and down

Review 51:I liked the old country manor feel of the hotel, the serenity and beautiful surrounding environment. The staff on duty for breakfast were very attentive and provided very good service. Food was also good, place was lovely.

Review 52:Loved the room... Amazing bed and decoration... Shame about the Inabilty to explore the house due to the wedding party and the somewhat reserved staff except one.

Review 53:The "deluxe single room" turned out to be a small room with a sink in a closet and tiny shower/toilet room. The window was set high in the room and faced about 7 air conditioning units on the roof. Not what I expected in a 4 star hotel.

Review 54:The garden/lake area is very beautiful and relaxing although one does hear the heavy traffic of the M1 in the distance.

Review 55:My friend, who my wife and l met at the hotel asked if we could get an upgrade as it was my wife's 50th birthday. The lady on reception was kind enough to give us one. The rooms in the new part were stunning. Thankyou that lady whose name l didn't get, it made very special.

Review 56:Breakfast could have been a little better. Then the stay would have been excellent.

Review 57:The hotel was pretty and comfortable located near the park.It was convenient and lovely to take an early morning walk in the park.

Review 58:They have installed emergency lighting in bedrooms that glow so brightly green at night I couldn't sleep. We complained but nothing was done. Breakfast is very basic and unappetising- ran out of yoghurts 2 days I was there, just provides cereals, Danish pastry and sometimes fruit and English breakfast in various guises. They have stopped providing kippers this is 2nd time visit they didn't provide yoghurts, only Orange juice or water on offer. Main meal in restaurant was sent back undercooked - ate out other nights.

Review 59:near St albans town

Review 60:Bit pricey, similar hotels in the area better value for money. For the price would expect a mini bar in the room.

Review 61:Great staff, probably the highest staff to guest ratio in the restaurant I have seen over 30 years on the road! Nice bar/lounge, room excellent. Food top notch, including the hot breakfast.

Review 62:Our room was a little too warm despite changing the temperature on the heating control.

Review 63:Excellent staff and service. The hotel is looked after well and the gardens and lake are beautiful.

Review 64:Breakfast was poor: Yoghurts were out of date Full breakfast (although ordered from a menu not a buffet) was shocking - all items has been pre - cooked potentially hours earlier - terrible Room Service Breakfast following day when instructed to be cooked fresh was lovely. I expected more from such a good hotel

Review 65:Excellent comfortable environment & great staff. Grounds we're beautiful & within easy walk to the town centre. Menu limited but food standard (evening Room Service) was superb

Review 66:I think it's overpriced for what it is. The hotel room keys are old and would have preferred a card key. The rain shower could have had a bit more water pressure. There is a small heater provided in the room that took a few hours to warm up the room. The air conditioning didn't seem to do much to heat the room. The windows are poorly insulated and let in a draught. No one offered to help with luggage.

Review 67:This is a very nice hotel. The breakfast was of a high standard. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was nice and large with a shower and bath as well as a rain shower. Great gardens and lake view

Review 68:Couldn't fault the whole experience. I highly recommend St Michaels Manor.

Review 69:Free and easy parking in the middle of old St Albans. Excellent service from the staff, 100% - nothing was any trouble. They wanted to help you whenever you met them. The best shower of any hotel I have stayed in. Quiet and peaceful. Old world charm, set on a lovely estate, with a lake and ducks. Even in the winter with frost thick on the ground, and the lake frozen, it was a treat to see each morning whilst enjoying a great breakfast! One evening we invited family to a meal in the Lakes Restaurant, it was excellent and a great evening was had by all.

Review 70:Very good staff , we were upgraded from a very nice double room to a very nice but bigger double room with no hassle. The surroundings were beautiful and it was a short walk into beautiful St Albans where we had lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Review 71:Booking for a celebration meal and Saturday night away was informed only 48 hours before that main restaurant was not available owing to a wedding party (and not at time of booking). As you would expect, the wedding took over 95% of the hotel for the Saturday afternoon and evening making it inconvenient to get to and from our room. Advise specifically checking whether hosting wedding before booking.

Review 72:Very good location, clean and the evening meal menu and food was excellent.

Review 73:the bathroom was a little small and the room ( a superior room)was too hot with little or no adjustment to the heating

Review 74:The location, the comfy bed and the view from the room and restaurant

Review 75:Our second visit to st micheals was as lovely as the first. Apart from this time we got engaged. This apparently made it "perfect" I do not disagree! wonderful staff and hotel

Review 76:Staff cleaning the stairs with the hoover at 8a.m.! Windows wouldn't stay open, so had to lodge something in the gap to keep them open.

Review 77:Excellent location near the centre. Welcoming receptionist and staff. Food very good. Comfortable hotel.

Review 78:Wi-fi was a little unreliable but there was a wedding on the night we stayed so it could have just been too many people on it. As much as this is a truly amazing hotel - the prices are a little overpriced. Only just. It would be good to see it come down slightly

Review 79:I have stayed with St. MM before and have enjoyed every time. The hotel itself is truly a hidden gem within St. Albans and if you can make the most of the grounds as they are absolutely stunning

Review 80:Staff were very friendly, welcoming and professional. Lovely room and excellent meal in the restaurant. Both dinner and breakfast superb. The grounds are spectacular.

Review 81:Birthday dinner with friends and decided to stay over. Hotel is an attractive old building with lovely grounds going down to the lake. Pleasant staff in all areas, and an excellent dinner which was also very good value. All in all a pleasant change from the usual chain hotels.

Review 82:Delays at breakfast time. Hotels apparent pre occupation with a forth coming wedding!

Review 83:Comfortable bedroom. Lovely building. Attractive surroundings

Review 84:Food prices for room service are very high, especially for basics like sandwiches

Review 85:Room was excellent quality, clean and well furnished, bathroom was very spacious with large bath and shower. The views from the hotel are very nice especially the view from the breakfast room

Review 86:lack of a lift made it hard for me as an elderly person to get to my bedroom which was up 2 flights of steep stairs.I was not warned of this. Also this hotel is used for weddings and shuts down completely but even on the day before there are florists and flowers being brought in .Again no prior warning.

Review 87:Comfortable bedrooms well furnished and equipped.attractive furnishings and stunning decor. Good food in the Lake Restaurant some portions small and didn't like their take onthe Eton Mess which was blobs, a mini strawberry and some blobs!Excellent attentive service though.wine was good.

Review 88:No mini-bar in our room.

Review 89:Great location and beautiful room. Nice toiletries. Excellent breakfast Complimentary newspaper of your choice in the morning.

Review 90:Breakfast was a bit disappointing. Egg Benedict with ham was cold and muffin was though to chew on. Table cloth was dirty. Wouldn't recommend the food

Review 91:The tulip room wS excellent. Loved the "hidden" bathroom. Comfy bed, really quiet surroundings.

Review 92:Beware no lift. (Listed building) but first staircase wide and shallow,so ask for room on 1st floor, manageable with a walking stick.

Review 93:1.Location 2.Quality of service from staff. 3.Excellent cuisine .

Review 94:Bar prices were rather expensive and wi-fi reception very variable.

Review 95:Very small single room but cleverly designed to use all available space. Excellent dinner and breakfasts. Very friendly and efficient staff.

Review 96:Restaurant service for dinner started off being very efficient and as the evening wore on the service got slower

Review 97:The food was excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Fantastic grounds, just a pity we did not have a little more time at the hotel.

Review 98:I don't much like listening to the sexual activities of guests in other rooms! I think you need to enhance your sound proofing!

Review 99:We have stayed at St Michael's Manor several times before. A lovely building; beautiful location; friendly, efficient staff. Thank you

Review 100:Very nice friendly staff, excellent food.

Review 101:Warm friendly place.

Review 102:Everything!..

Review 103:The staff made my family feel very at home over Christmas. There was a very friendly atmosphere and the rooms were lovely.

Review 104:wonderful restaurant

Review 105:A bathrobe would have been the crowning touch!

Review 106:This was a totally good experience

Review 107:We liked the professional friendly staff and quality of the restaurant.

Review 108:nothing

Review 109:Very Comfortable indeed. Good view of St. Albans fireworks

Review 117:Location and comfort of the hotel

Review 118:Uneven flooring covered with carpet, unsuitable for elderly clients

Review 121:Vegetarian food options were very limited.

Review 122:great breakfast

Review 123:Excellent welcome and a beautiful hotel. Food quality and staff friendliness also excellent.
