Reviews for The Shipwrights Arms Hotel
Review 1:As far as room is concerned , my only gripe was the shower was luke warm and a 'dribble'.
Review 2:Hotel did have private free parking what was good! The town center is a good walk away but feasible to do.
Review 3:The landlord seemed indifferent. No welcome, no goodbye, building closed in the morning, so we had to go into town for breakfast. Shower a disaster, a true example of British plumbing. While talking to a bar guest, the landlord advised leaving the key in the room, on departure. Not necessarily unfriendly, definitely uninterested.
Review 4:Eeeeeh, well, not too far from the city centre, a 7-minute walk. The building is pretty.
Review 5:The sign outside said luxury room which was far from the case! The beds were as old as the hills and quite uncomfortable. No light bulb in the bathroom and the toilet would not flush and was not bolted down so it felt like it was going to fall over when used. There was no outside light to the entrance and the paving was uneven it was not very welcoming when coming in at night. We had a 3 person room which had a kettle but only 1 cup and one glass for us all and no tea or coffee.
Review 6:Location was OK just out of the main town center so nice and quite over night. New power shower which was great.
Review 7:Everything it was very poor, no breakfast, and no evening meal the way is was saying on the advertising
Review 8:The hotel was not really good, the owner not respect the costumers,it was very rude, never was clean. The WiFi never works
Review 9:Beds, absolutely awful. On closer inspection, there was not enough slats underneath the mattress to support it. Would just have taken the owners to nail the slats down as they moved. Someone has obviously spent quite a bit of money on the rooms, so it is a shame not to have finished the job properly! Guests came and went all night long, although we realise that this is not the owners fault. Wardrobe door did not shut properly, just a minor thing. Parking very limited and we were not happy about parking our hire car in the car park, but this was the only place to leave it. If the owners are going to charge you for a deluxe room with ensuite facilities then that is what they have to provide! Can only check in when the pub is open, how bizarre is that, we were lucky that we caught the owner just after he had ironed his shirt! Breakfast, I have to say was surprisingly good, although it was in a transport café next door!
Review 10:Quite close to Ipswich.
Review 11:no meals even though it tells you that you can book a cooked breakfast the night before they don't do any meals at all. Also when booking it asks you if you would like to reserve a parking space which I did but your not guaranteed a space
Review 12:he room was nice and clean it was tidied everyday
Review 13:No breakfast despite being offered at point of booking. Reserved parking full. Dirty floor in room. Dirty glass in en suite. Not all bulbs in room working.
Review 14:The local Indian restaurant was good
Review 15:Located above a pub so quite noisy until late, then woken up by builders in the morning (on a Sunday!) Access to the room was through a unlit alleyway at the side of the pub and up a set of stairs which looked ready to fall down (also unlit.) Shower did not work, just as well as it needed a good clean. No WiFi. Whole place closed up in the morning so nobody to complain to.
Review 16:Fairly close to railway station and town centre.
Review 17:it got very cold at night and we didnt have access to another blankets in locked cupboard the room was very cold when we came back even though the radiators were on in the afternoon
Review 18:it was good location to the football ground and town centre
Review 19:But and this is a big but there was no heating. It is October. We could see our breath in the hotel room it was that cold. We went and told the staff and were told the boiler is off. My partner being an electrician and having trained as a plumber in the past offered to come and turn it back on and was told no it is off. So we were freezing. No extra blankets in the room, no offer of anything like a heater. It made what could have been an ok stay into one where we were just glad to get out of there in the morning to warm up. Not impressed at all and had there been any managers (or even staff) around in the morning we would have complained. This could be a really lovely hotel but without heating and with the don't care attitude it is dismal. If you are going to stay take blankets and be prepared to freeze
Review 20:The hotel itself wasn't as bad as some of the reviews have made out (well certainly not for us). It was clean enough, pleasant enough staff but they didn't go out of their way to help and it was a bed for the night.
Review 21:There was nobody there to greet me on arrival, had to phone the number on the board 5 times before anyone replied. No one there in the morning to provide breakfast, even tho that's what I paid for .again I could not contact anyone as phone constantly engaged.
Review 22:I only had to stayed one night
Review 23:Some of the friendliest, most helpful staff I have met. I needed to stay an extra night and this was easily arranged. We will definitely use this hotel on our next visit.
Review 24:Hotel did not do food of any description although the dining room was shown in several photos. Room was not cleaned on the third day of stay. Towel that was damp after three days was not changed although it was left on bathroom floor as requested. Thid hotel may be OK for tradesmen looking for cheap accommodation but not suitable for leisure visit or a family. Local surrounding neighbourhood area may intimidate some guests.
Review 25:Price. However could have got a similar deal at local Premier Inn we subsequently found out
Review 26:The single beds and condensation in the bathroom. The walls are very thin I could hear the quest next door snoring.
Review 27:The location. The room was adequate for the weekend.
Review 28:I didn't expect much for the money but was very disappointed that the carpet had mould near the window, the rug looked like it was not hoovered and not too sure how clean the sheets were since we found some hair. We felt uneasy staying in the room and it is above a pub (I admit I didn't realise this when I booked) which was a bit noisy so we decided to go to a late night showing at the cinema to avoid the noise. Next time I book a place I will read the reviews.
Review 29:Location is good as it is walking distance to the cinema and places to eat. Room was very big and the bed wasn't too uncomfortable.
Review 30:Discovered on arrival that the restaurant was closed, so no possibility of breakfast, let alone any other meal. Radiators didn't work in the room. Strong smell of ancient halls of residence. Conservatory in complete disarray and unusable.
Review 31:Very little
Review 32:Rooms not clean No heating No wifi Not enough hot water Freezing room Asked for room change - said No Asked for heaters - said no Asked for wifi - said no TVs signal was very very bad When I asked for heaters , staff asked me to use extra quilt Most importantly unable sleep due to cigarette smell
Review 33:Location
Review 34:No heating, toilet did not flush properly, pillows smelt, shower tray mouldy, skirting coming away from wall. Room in old building not available, conservatory being used for laundry, so could not use!!!!!!
Review 35:Nothing
Review 36:The rooms were filthy and the bathrooms had gaps where tiles once were. The bathroom in one room had a balcony shared with another but the curtains were broken leaving no privacy at all for the bath/shower or toilet.
Review 37:Location was great, comfortable bed. Basic accommodation but for the price it was inline with expectations. We found it a good option for a 1 night stay where we weren't spending much time in our room. An extra handtowel in the bathroom would be welcome.
Review 38:We had our room swapped out for another which was still halfway under construction and with broken tables and wardrobes.
Review 39:The hotel is situated just a few minutes walk away from Ipswich town centre with plenty to do in the beautiful historic town. There is ample parking near the hotel (but beware, the owner stated that the main road the hotel is on is dodgy at times, so be safer to park up a side street). Free wi-fi.
Review 40:The room was clean and a nice welcome but would have appreciated little things like the usual luxury hotel things! Soap and shampoo sachets and although free Wi-fi I had to have my phone by a window to reach it .
Review 41:A comfortable bed and clean and as I said a nice welcome.
Review 42:No hot water. Carpet and furnishing very tired. Little sign of hotel staff. Offered breakfast on Sunday which did not happen.
Review 43:Large room with tea/coffee making.
Review 44:Car park is very limited, however there is free parking across the street which is convenient enough.
Review 45:We stayed in this hotel for a friend's wedding in Ipswich. The hotel was in walking distance of local amenities and quayside. The room was equipped with three single beds and two sofas which was ample for three young men looking for a base camp. The room was pleasantly spacious and in reasonably decorative order. Not luxury accommodation, but great value for money.
Review 46:Bathroom a little "aged" around the edges. Towels could have been bigger (and white - as they were brown).
Review 47:Sheets were clean and beds were comfortable. Shower had good power.
Review 48:For the price, this place was a decent place to stay for a night. The staff were friendly, and the room was spacious and comfortable. If you go expecting five star (or even two or three star) luxury you'll be disappointed, but bear in mind the cheap price. I was satisfied given what we paid.
Review 49:We were accommodated in the annex to the rear of Inn. We had to drive round to the rear to reach our apartment, which we were happy about. In trying to bring our car to unload we encountered a car parked in the drive. We asked the men in the car could we pass by to our apartment in order to unload our luggage. They, especially the drunken driver, were abusive to my wife. In the morning our car had been keyed which cost us £350 to repair when we got home. We reported this to the owners wife & daughter who were sympathetic & took photos & our contact details & we're going to check their cctv cameras, but we've heard nothin since. The men had been drinking & had half drunken glasses left on our doorstep.
Review 50:The hospitallity was good & the owners were really nice. The apartment was comfortable, but all this was spoilt by the behaviour of the drunken men in the drive who were abusive & keyed our car. J&L London.
Review 51:No hot water in the morning (6am) meaning a cold shower. Radiator leaked on carpet making my work boots wet.
Review 52:Hotel and Bar staff (same person) very helpful.
Review 53:It was a very hot day whenwe stayed there n being on the ground floor, we were not able to open the window thus making the room asauna nthere was not a fan in the room! The soap dish in the bathroom was very dirty! Floor board creaks noisely in our room n the room upstairs.
Review 54:The cleanliness was non-existent. The carpet was stiff and sticky as was the stained bathmat and towels. Yuck. It was disgusting. The wifi was very weak and was out more than 80% of the time.
Review 55:The staff was very nice
Review 56:Bed top cover (which matched curtains) didn't like the thought that it probably was not washed after each stay.
Review 57:Good price inc free car park. Easy to find, handy for main roads and within walking distance of town centre.
Review 58:There was 1 tiny old cup in the room a tiny glass 4 tea bags 2 tiny milk no spoon. No Breakfast or evening Meal Had to go to Local tesco
Review 59:sunny room
Review 60:had problems with the toilet not flushing and a head board on the single bed which wasn't even attached to the bed!
Review 61:booked a double room but ended up with a double bed and single bed which was perfect. Very quiet location, no noise from bar.
Review 62:Rooms were basic and fairly clean but as there was no facilities on offer for food we found it hard to find breakfast!
Review 63:The landlady was extremely polite and helpful. It was a perfect base for a work trip, bar was well needed at the end of a busy day!
Review 64:Wifi didn't work, shower pitiful, not at all sound proofed, could hear everyone coming and going. Didn't have any information in the room about facilities or food.
Review 65:Nice people, room clean and tidy, bar was also nice. Good Indian up the road.
Review 66:Arrived just before 1830 and had to hang around whilst they got the room ready, then told me they didn't serve breakfast, unlike their advert on this very site. Not good for someone working all day. Bed, well, may as well have slept on the floor for all the comfort there was.
Review 67:Furniture needs updating as sofa had ripped uoholstery. Maybe a little more attention to hospitality tray...like cups and cutlery. Also little bits like tissue box and perhaps some soap or shampoo in the bathroom. And a second bin.
Review 68:Conveniently located and great value for money. Also accommodating for outside food to be brought in as there is no restaurant.
Review 69:Took 15 mins to be let in as no one was on site on our arrival.hotel all locked up. had to wait in cold outside.
Review 70:Beds extremely comfortable. very spacious room.
Review 71:Heating turned off at approx 8.30 am, even if one did not have to get up and go out in the morning. Unacceptable for a paying guest. No breakfast provided even to pay for. No staff around at all till I believe the afternoon when bar opens. Bathroom light fell out and hung by its wires. I put it back into the ceiling, reported it, debris on floor was cleaned, but fitting never repaired. Could have happened again.
Review 72:Room was reasonably comfortable and nice.
Review 73:We felt the place was on the verge of closing . The whole place was dead at lunch time and there was no breakfast service. We saw no one but the cleaner when we arrived at lunch time. All the doors were locked in the morning and no one was about. The toilet flush was broken and we managed to fix it temporarily.
Review 74:The location was convenient. The room furnishings were adequate.
Review 75:The real shame of the room was the terrible condition of the bed.It was completely bowed in the middle & it was painful to sleep in as I suffer with my back.We had to leave before 11:30am to attend a wedding ,but the main reception was closed & there was no one available to discuss the bed problem with.We felt the beds' condition would of been very apparent to the owner/manager even without a guest having to draw attention to it.So we felt keeping a bed such as that showed real disregard for their guests.Which was such a shame,as it was obvious they had gone to some effort with regard to the decor etc of the room .We would be more than happy to return ,but only on the condition that they replaced the bed with a suitable alternative .
Review 76:We liked that the location was very practical,& we found the on site parking really helpful. The room was very tasteful & clean, and the tea/coffee provision was generous. We would be more than happy to return ,but only on the condition the bed was replaced with a suitably, comfortable alternative .
Review 77:Hadnt realized breakfast not included in price. However cheap cafes local for breakfast,so no real issue
Review 78:Clean and comfortable room. Lots of hot water. Good safe parking. Few minutes walk into Town.
Review 79:Toilet not fixed down properly no breakfast, told to go in fast food café next door ! didn't try it. booked balcony room didn't get it. Wrong key code given to gain entry, bar staff let me in good job it before bar shut at 11pm as no one on premises overnight.
Review 80:Bed was very uncomfortable and bowed towards the middle, needs a new matress.
Review 81:Lovely room very close to the centre of town with very friendly staff and a nice bar.
Review 82:Place was closed when we arrived at 1600, had to ring for somebody to open the place .Heating not working sufficient to warm the room. Toilet not flushing, had to repair myself. Worst of all we were charged twice on our credit card and still trying to get money refunded
Review 83:nothing
Review 84:Worst accommodation we have ever stayed in. Cannot check in till 16.00not 12.00. Bed was like it was purchased in a jumble sale. Electricshower just dribbled with water. Kept awake in night due to family fromhell downstairs. To top it all owner took £40 cash for balance and the Iwas charged again via debit card. Only stayed one out of two nightsbooked. Do not stay at this place!!!
Review 85:Absolutely nothing
Review 86:Took double payment from my card, and flat refused to refund it. Had to get police and bank fraud department on the case to try and get my money back. BEWARE!
Review 87:I guess my only worry was that it was a bit dark using the entrance at the back of the building.......but that's all.
Review 88:Couple of nights B&B, at a reasonable price and was met when I arrived. Room was massive and in keeping with the style of the building, which I liked very much. General idea when I go away is to spend more time visiting stuff in the area, so am never too concerned about domestics.....I wasn't hassled, pleased myself when I came and went and generally found anyone I met helpful and pleasant. I would stay again.
Review 89:Nothing. Will be even better once refurbishment is complete.
Review 90:Never been to Ipswich previously we were unsure as to what to expect. The hotel made us most welcome even though refurbishment was underway; that said we were not inconvenienced at any time in out stay. We would go again.
Review 91:the room smelled damp it was musty ,needed a vacuum, bath towels miss matched ,no bedside lamps , the view from the back widow was untidy and overgrown .. I was glad to leave
Review 92:the staff were pleasant and the location to the city centre was good
Review 93:The only issue was more a maintainence one. The shower in my room (3) did not work properly. It looked like there is a fault with the shower head and the shower itself was blocked so the water would not drain away, apart from that a very comfortable, clean room!!
Review 94:Everything mentioned in the tag-line. Including off road parking, although the street is a dead end so the is no though traffic, or road racers to wake you up in the early hours...It is an old fashioned pub located next to a housing estate (sic). I was warmly greeted by a couple of locals drinking at the bar as I came through the door, I did open it first... I would make the Shipwright Arms my first choice when I return to Ipswich, Thank you.
Review 95:no food available due to decorating had to walk into town for evening meal and for breakfast took 10mins had to change rooms no heating next room not able to sleep well due to broken bed
Review 96:receptionist very welcoming and helpful
Review 97:Cleanliness very poor with cobwebs, dirty kitchen/utensils/crockery (if any) a bathroom that had a long term leak and wouldnt dream of using shower with giant plunger inside. The beds were horrible. One was a rollaway with thick mattress, the other had no wheels, and upstairs one was completely broken. Pillows were scrappy. In fact, most of the furnishings were broken one way or another. The outside metal staircase was rickety with one step slanted and no lighting at all.Dismal. Breakfast was in a cold room and no lighting was put on as well as no choice on breakfast. Did stipulate at time of booking we wanted a veggie breakfast. At this time, I had almost lost the will to live here. However, could be
Review 98:Good heating system
Review 99:We arrived at 12 midday. Doors locked. No one answered the phone for 2hrs! Whenbthry eventuslly did was told ownrrs are away and we could notbook in until 4pm! Breakfast room bring decorated so no hreakfadt onpremises! Directed to a cafe on the corner which did not open until 10am for breakfast. Fortunately we had a relative nearby to house from therain until we could book in. Had iron but no ironboard. Shower hadhardly any power in it. Very basic. If there was a notice on the doorabout booking in times we eould have felt a little better. We hadtravelled for nearly 5 hours and was left to knock on nearby doors whereother guests tried to locate the proprietors.
Review 100:Size of room. Nothing else!
Review 101:Could have been cleaner in the room & bathroom but not too bad. Pub didn't open until 12pm,so no chance of breakfast during stay. Nice, cheap cafe just yards away though. Poor free wi-fi in room & tv reception was poor. Had to request more bog roll from reception in pub.
Review 102:Quiet pub/hotel in a good location for the town centre, waterfront & the home of ITFC - Portman Road. Comfy bed, good sleep had. Decent en-suite bathroom.
Review 103:Only a 10 minute walk in to town staff was friendly room was clean and tidy went down there for football match and would definitely stay there again we found it real value for money
Review 104:very old building.nightmare to use stairs with luggage. first impression about personal is pleasant but if you have any request in plus like a hair dryer they will reply that is not a 5* hotel....not happy to stay there.
Review 105:location
Review 106:The room was in a rather poor state, with only one light bedside light did not work, the bed was so old it should have been dumped long ago. the shower was scaled up and did not work correctly. There was no breakfast facilities, only a cafe on the corner of the road, which I'm not sure of what the opening hours were. When I booked this hotel on line I was under the impression that it was an old coaching Inn with 18th century features, the only thing that age was the bed. I do believe that we were put in a old house next door to the hotel which was not very welcoming.
Review 107:The only thing I can honestly say about this place is that it was convinient to book arriving at a late time.
Review 108:There was no one there to greet us at 3.45pm when we arrived. A man working there even tried to call someone who didn't arrive. We were told breakfast would be in the dining room. After waiting until 8.15 am and no one turning up, nor was there an answer when I rang the number listed, we decided to have breakfast elsewhere as we needed to be moving on. When we returned after breakfast, there was still no one there so we packed and left, leaving the key in the unlocked room. We could not leave it anywhere else because the doors were locked.
Review 109:The room was clean and comfortable and the young lady who finally attended to us was very pleasant.
Review 110:Said it has wifi, but wasn't. Booked a double room but got 3 separate beds. Reception says its open 24hrs a day but it wasn't. Floor need hoovering. Staff not that helpful.
Review 111:Cheap, good location
Review 112:No bath mat and floor was slippery. Mould in places around the bath. teabags etc not replenished automatically. No one to accept the key on check-out. No breakfast available but we were directed to a nearby cafe which would have been fine but it was closed (on Mondays).
Review 113:Friendly reception on arrival and when we needed more milk and teabags they were readily supplied. Overall it was good value
Review 114:Room was filthy on arrival with the shower too dirty for me to use - my partner had a couple of showers during the four days, through necessity. It looked as if it had never been cleaned. I was told the "Housekeeper comes on Wednesdays." This was the response to my request for a toilet roll when we arrived!! The pillows only had top pillowcases on, and two pillows were stuffed into one pillowcase. The only thing that appeared to have been done to the room during our stay was the duvets were dragged up the bed ! I would never recommend this place. It was only suitable for working men (no disrespect to them) , who were very polite. Our room was not in the hotel, but in a separate house next door. This was very different to what we expected from the description. We only saw the bar when we checked in, but nothing of the old building. Only one choice of meal was available on the first night, shepherds pie, so as I do not eat red meat I had nothing!
Review 115:Not a lot -
Review 116:Everything it was dirty smelly horrible noisy police sitting outside hotel all night hard beds not nice at all very bad fot the money Don't book here
Review 117:Some other guests stayed up talking till morning which made a little harder to sleep. But other than that all good!
Review 118:They gave us a fantastic deal for two rooms (one of them very spacious). The kids were comfortable and enjoyed their stay. The location is also just 10 minutes away from the town centre and really close to convenient stores and exit to the motorway.
Review 119:Breakfast did not seem to be available The guy was very helpful in directing me elsewhere for evening meal and breakfast when I arrived about 8pm. When I left at 8:50am the last morning I appeared to be the only person in the building as most internal doors were locked so I left my room key in the door lock of the room. The pub downstairs was a little noisy until about 11pm but perhaps that is to be expected as I perceived this to be more of an Inn rather than a hotel on arrival.
Review 120:The room was clean and comfortable I think the room charge was about right
Review 121:Firstly, I had written an email to arrange pick-up service from the railway station, which was granted in the reply I received. When I called the hotel from the station, I was told the service was not available and the member of staff pretended that nobody had actually given me a reply, which I found very impolite. Of course apologies were made, but how does this help ? Secondly, the TV cable signal was poor, as well as the wifi. I was told that the wifi may not work in the room I had been given, which turned out to be true most of the time. If this problem is known to the staff, there should be an announcement on the website stating that not all rooms are provided with an Internet connection. My frustration was not caused by the lack of these services, but rather by being promised something which was ultimately poorly provided or not offered at all.
Review 122:The garbage bin was emptied daily, the bathroom had a bathtub and the bed was good. Then again, these are customary services/ facilities.
Review 123:TV reception was faulty, cable needed replacing. Feint smell, may have been a smoking friendly room in the past. Should have paid with GBP instead of foreign currency.
Review 124:Comfortable beds, great breakfast, friendly owner/staff, free parking, overall value for money.
Review 125:The main problem was the missing hosts - both when we arrived, and when we left (each at a reasonable time) - meaning we had to telephone the hotel from outside on each occasion and wait. The room was also a bit tired and could do with redecoration, while there was a scary notice on the table threatening that any 'stains' would face extra costs (my first thought was 'how would you notice', then 'is this a scam to try to charge excess costs?') - so we drank our cups of tea incredibly carefully!!!!
Review 126:Price was ok.
Review 127:Not helpful welcome, no offer of breakfast and no interest in guests at all.
Review 128:As an antidote to the management the lady responsible for cleaning was very nice and helpful.
Review 129:Filthy room and cold no heating or hot water Off road parking suitable only for a smart car or push bike. Breakfast cold and no provision for evening meal or barsnacks. Total lack of personnel able to deal with any problems and no one to complain to. Booked a double room and was given a triple room in what looked like the shop next door. Bathroom was a shower room and had what looked like rat droppings on the floor.Mold was present everywhere and when using the basin it leaked on the floor. I have pictures of the filth if anyone is interested.
Review 130:Clean bar and bar toilet..
Review 131:the fact it was advertised that breakfast was available for an extra £5 per person which is fine but when i enquired about what time breakfast was served i was told there is no breakfast available.
Review 132:Dirty soap dish. Insufficient towels. Twin room window opens direct on to sidewalk, therefore noisy until quite late and if the window is not open yo will suffocate. The rooms upstairs with balcony seem better.m
Review 133:Although the street is a little run down it is a very short walk to the marina/quay area of Ipswich. Breakfast
Review 134:Room above bar - too noisy. Wifi may be free but only in the bar. Advert states Sunday lunch available but it wasn't! Breakfast was not an option.
Review 135:Bed was fairly comfortable.
Review 136:No food available on premises though take-aways can be eaten in bar. A nearby corner cafe was suggested for breakfast. Hardly a recipe for a relaxing leisure break. Room generally clean but long term dust on some areas of floor. Nothing done to room while out - beds not made, cups not washed, etc. 'Luxury Accommodation' claim on sign outside was ludicrously far-fetched. This was a locals pub with some rooms - not a hotel.
Review 137:Quiet location 10 minute walk from town centre 15 minute walk to main rail station
Review 138:Everything. Not open when we arrived at 16.00 on Saturday and had to ring the owner to get someone to open up. The room upstairs at the front was reasonable although the shower head leaked. Not enough towels provided. Our daughter and son-in-law stayed in the room downstairs at the front which was very shabby and there was mould in the en-suite. The entrance and stairs did not look as if they had been cleaned and we were not tempted to eat breakfast there.
Review 139:Close proximity to the Quay but absolutely nothing else.
The Fine Print
Please note, the kitchen is currently undergoing refurbishment. Breakfast will be available at the cafe next door from Monday- Saturday. However, breakfast will be available on Sundays at the property. There will be no evening meals available, however, there are restaurants in the town centre.Check-in on Saturdays and Sundays is from 13:00 onward. The onsite parking is limited, however, there is on street parking nearby.
