Reviews for MJB Dereham Hill House Hotel
Review 1:I do not have internet access on the day I am travelling so sending door codes on the day of my arrival is not helpful. When I contacted the hotel number they would not give them to me over the phone and told me to get internet access which was impossible and by this time i was outside the hotel. I was told to contact the people I had booked with who had a copy of the email sent out on the day but the room code in the letter they had received was one number wrong. Now the number I had first rung to the hotel was not answering and I sat outside the room for another 30 mins trying to get through. Eventually the cleaner opened the door to the room for me [ 2 hours after I had first arrived] with a number which was one number different than the one I had been given.
Review 2:The room was quiet and warm
Review 3:Dity sheet with holes. Had tv but no way to turn on. Took 2 hrs to get access codes and nobody answered hotel's number before and after arrival. Hidden charges galore. Parking nightmare and heavy fines despite having arrived after check in time, and leaving before check out time. And they have your card details. Scary company! Wish i had booked a b&b. Not worth the risk!!!!
Review 4:It appeared to be good value....but it has turned out to be a nighmare
Review 5:Everything. The accom was appalling. At £25 a night you don't expect much, but this was worse than a hostel which would have been cheaper. When I rang and tried to cancel because booking.com had actually managed to book my first choice and had said it hadn't gone through, cancelling this one was then not an option because they take full payment anyway (which in fairness they do state.) But I did say to the lady on the phone that I had misgivings because so many of the reviews said the door code lock didn't work properly and there were broken windows. I think it is VERY telling that complaints will not be taken over the phone!
Review 6:NA
Review 7:bed very uncomfortable, locked out twice due to batteries in door lock mech. Shower very little water pressure. Room 10 Rubbish.
Review 8:location good for town
Review 9:Door code wouldn't worksheet toilet, no TVs remote so stuck on one channel with no sound. Window stuck open, wouldn't close and constant flushing noise coming from
Review 10:Didn't like the strong smell of bleach where they had cleaned the room, it was overpowering. No controls for the t.v. Oh, and the room could do with a chair. But overall, with these little things put right, it would not be good, it would be excellent.
Review 11:We were a bit apprehensive after reading some of the reviews. We were more than pleasantly surprised. It was good, Room 12 ground floor right at the end so people did not pass our door. Had trouble getting in but that was our fault not any one elses. Room quite large, cosy and warm, double bed. The whole place was spotlessly clean, towels good, plenty of tea and coffe and milk. After reading the reviews, we brought our own makings and also a toilet roll, none of it was needed.
Review 12:Bedding and towels could do with replacing, no TV remote which would not be a problem if I could have reached the buttons, but the TV was so high on the wall it was impossible!!
Review 13:Great location, basic accommodation but OK for the night we stayed.
Review 14:Overpriced! It was terrible. The building had smashed windows and windows in 'room' that were easily opened (ground floor)from outside. there are no staff on sight and when you do try and call to find out how to access the room you've paid for they take at least 20mins of solid calling to answer. I would not recommend to anyone
Review 15:Honestly, nothing
Review 16:The key coding to back door didn't work well and got locked out three times. Only stayed one night out of four as access was so difficult. No bulb in indoor landing light so very difficult to put room code in. .moved bulb from another landing light. Had to stay with family as couldn't gain access. Very bad. Found three people to help who also only managed to open door after 20 mins of trying each time. Disgusted
Review 17:It was clean
Review 18:Overall very very poor, bed linen wasn't even ironed and the window in our room was broken and didn't lock!! Anyone could of got into the room! Hardly think hill house should be advertised as a hotel because its not! As we drove into the car park the bins were totally overflowing with rubbish ( mainly lager boxes) hardly a good first impression.
Review 19:Mould in the shower and on the sink. No sound proofing between the rooms. A smoke detector which had not been fitted correctly. The "emergency" contact number rang out when we tried to call it. No bedside tables or lamps, a door straight in off the street, and the room smelt of... something indescribable.
Review 20:No staff or reception!!! It felt like a ghost house. It was eerie andempty. The shower did'nt work. The pictures make it look like acharming old building but it is in fact a dump, Broken windows, noservice, no effort. The owner/ management need to get a realitycheck and stop stealing money from people for nothing.
Review 21:No tv control. Bathroom shower switch hanging loose thermostate not working electric heater not working bath not sealed.to wall very dangerous.electrical fittings loose or not working
Review 22:Coveniante
Review 23:No wardrobe or mirror in the room. Room serviced once in my 16 night stay, 4 towels to last my stay and bed linen not changed.
Review 24:Location in relation to work place.
Review 25:The heating only came on twice a day and was only lukewarm. Tiled floor, albeit clean, made the room feel cold. The TV was high up and difficult to operate so I gave up. The shower didn't work, nor did the cold water tap on the sink. Both taps were damaged and uncomfortable to use. Luckily I was only staying 1 night and won't be returning. If you do stay, remember to check your email for room code as there is no Reception. Also, book a parking space in advance as nowhere close to park. I felt £32 a night was a ripoff for what you got. The walls are thin so be prepared to be disturbed.
Review 26:The bed and pillows did the job. The duvet kept me nice and warm in what felt like a cold, sterile room.
Review 27:No TV remote control found, no chairs in the room, there appeared to be a water leak in the bathroom as the bathroom floor was wet. Noisy guests banging doors and talking very loudly in the early hours of the morning, this went on for a few hours.
Review 28:but this time round downstairs room cold as window didnt fit properly, no coffee tea etc left - we had kettle and cups but nothing to put in them. the toilet was badly stained needed a bit of bleach and lovely telly but no remote and the light switch was across the opposite wall to bed so turn out light and feel way to bed in dark :( shame usually nice rooms
Review 29:convienient to town low price and usually all need for an overnight stay
Review 30:There were no staff on site, I called the help number the last was unconcerned and didn't even apologise for the state of the room...disgusting it should be closed down
Review 31:Nothing, I didn't stay, I walked into the room which hadn't been cleaned or made up since the last person!! The bed was unmade with empty yoghurt pots and cake tins on the bed.
Review 32:The hotel was filthy and in need of repairs such as boarded up broken windows. The hotel was unmanned and seemed to house long term homeless residents. On entering the smell of pot being smoked was overwhelming.
Review 33:The building looked nice from the outside. But was on a busy junction with only a narrow pavement outside.
Review 34:It has to be said that my Stay was not the happiest I have experiencedat a Bed and Breakfast - of which there have been Many.Several Points came to my attention. 1. The Lack of a Receptionist. A Competent Receptionist is a MUST HAVE for any serious Accomodation Provider, as they are the first Point of Contact to the Guests on arrival and a contact point if any Issues arise, during the Guest's Stay, however Trivial they may be / seem. How this affected Me: I had to make a Long-distance Phone - Call to have a simple Query about the ((Apparently)non-correctly functioning TV) answered. *Not Satisfactory* 2. Any on-duty Staff should be Smartly-dressed and able to deal with simple requests, and more importantly, be Speakers of English as their First-Language id they are employed within the UK , where the Primary language is, of course, English. How this affected me: I asked the (untidily-dressed, in my Opinion) Staff on Duty for some Tea-bags (not Provided in the Room, by the way) and extra Milk sachets. They could not - or pretended not to, understand me. Now I AM a Tynesider , but I can speak English to Standard where my Customers (I work in Specialist Retail ) can understand me easily 3. The awkwardness of some of the Layout of the Room; mostly the inherent danger of an awkwardly-placed Light switch at the vey top of steep internal Stairs could be very dangerous for someone unsteady on their feet - potential fall Hazard. In addition , the Television was awkwardly placed ON TOP of a Wardrobe and could not be easily adjusted (moved) because of the length -or rather lack of length - of the coaxial signal cable. Not very Convenient. 4. Overall , I feel the Cost of my stay for the Accomodation , £88, was excessive by a factor of something in the region of , say, some £25-£30. IF the cost had been in the region of £55-60 I would not feel quite so hard-done-by and taken-advantage-of , in this Context.
Review 35:The fact that the Property was centrally located and Warm.
Review 36:The rooms are basic, which is fair enough for the money. But we arrived and the towels smelt, so we rung the hotel and the ones they brought us, smelt the same. The room was dark, even with the light on, the hallways were dark too, there's no lighting to the door to get into the hotel either.
Review 37:The location is great
Review 38:post code didnt direct us to the hotel using sat nav, outdoor light not working at entrance to rooms 7-? Damage to tap and no toilet roll and no TV remote, All coped with and quick visit to the co-op.
Review 39:location in centre of town easy access to restaurants and shops. Good carpark and very clean warm room.
Review 40:In spite of having sent a text to MJB informing them of our arrival after 4pm each time we stay there, we have received parking fines while in their car parking area on many occasions which we have had to pay as calls to the parking people seem to fall on deaf ears. We stay regularly as we are house hunting in the area. We don't even know we have a fine until we receive them later in the post when it's too late to do anything about it.
Review 41:It's impossible to "LIKE" when we have been given parking fines while asleep in our room & legally parked in their car park on so many occasions. My wife even puts notes on our car saying "please don't find us as we are sleeping in room #", but that's ignored as these people just drive in, take automated pictures of our car with their equipped vehicles & we receive the fines later in the post on our return to our home in London. It's a totally unfair system.
Review 42:I didn't get a email for the codes that I needed to get into the Hotel or for the room until it was too late Someone who was checking in at the same time as I TRIED, help me with two phone calls that was needed to obtain the codes The code for the Room didn't work The water was broken
Review 43:The room was clean & the bed was comfy,
Review 44:We were given codes to get into our rooms we did not meet any staff at all. A little clinical really. Nothing can be said other than the location was good.
Review 45:It was a convenient location.
Review 46:Poorly lit car park & rear entrance...pin codes for all the doors was a joke & no staff on hand to assist with problems....just a contact number to call
Review 47:The beds were ok
Review 48:Do not stay here it is a doss house not a hotel. Asked the locals about the Hill House Hotel and they said they wouldn't touch the place. Advertised as an hotel but isn't, no staff, smells awful, dark & creepy.
Review 49:Didn't like anything about this accommodation. It is advertised as an hotel but it is a doss house do not stay here. Can't believe booking.com have it on their site.
Review 50:We had room 9, was clean and acceptable, but our friends in room 8, the room was appalling, the pillows and duvet, had seen better days, no chair to sit in, no wardrobe, no plug in the sink to hold any water. they would not lie in the bed, so did not get any sleep. Lighting very poor in hallway.
Review 51:Nothing.
Review 52:Room was damp, bathroom was dirty and had black mould around the bath and hair in the plug hole. Room was next to front door and very noisey. Could hear everything said by people in ajoining room
Review 53:bad bed bad room bad bathroom wafer thin walls bad snoring from next door bad smell coming from bathroom poor lighting . never again !
Review 54:very little to like
Review 55:Condensation inthe room made our clothes damp as there we no cupboards
Review 56:The price was ok but was noises moving furniture at 2.30 am above us. No light so we could see the way to our room and had to use our mobile put put the door numbers in
Review 57:1) The carpet was dirty mud stained. 2) The TV had no remote and did not work. 3) The taps in the sink were missing prongs 4) The shower had no pressure. 5) There was two of us staying in the room and only one large and one small towel was provided. 6) When trying to ring up and an extra person to the parking. I could not get through after several attempts. He ended up with a £60 parking ticket
Review 58:They room was nice and big and the beds up stairs is a nice touch.
Review 59:The room was missing a lampshade, the tv remote control and a bin. I was left however a black bin bag! The carpet was marked and looked filthy. There are no staff on site to ask anything. A handyman turned up late one afternoon and was about to let himself in if had not opened the door. He'd come to replace the seal around the shower tray. I wasn't to use the shower for an hour while the new seal dried! And he kindly left the empty tube of sealant in the sink!
Review 60:Safety issues: water leaked from shower unit - dangerous as electricity and water do not mix. Management would not move us to another room and insisted it was safe. We did not feel this was the case and were unable to shower. Maintenance looked at problem and left bathroom floor covered in water and towels not replaced until requested. He recommended new shower but too late for our stay. Outside no lights leading to main or inner door tin order to see key pad. Lighting very dim inside. No bedside lamps - only 1 bedside table and no chair. No TV remote Cracked mug - was replaced however
Review 61:Location - thought price was good but not so considering lack of services.
Review 62:Got the impression it was a remotely controlled hotel as no one on site to greet us can see how it would make good business sense to operate this way but found it a little impersonal if I'm honest...
Review 63:When we realised it was an unmanned hostel facing direct onto the market square with a key pad entry and we had to text on arrival for the free parking, we abandoned the booking and fee and went elsewhere.
Review 64:The guest house we went to instead after realising what we had booked.
Review 65:No staff. Not clean. No breakfast available. The place could do with a facelift.
Review 66:Nothing at all. A shocking experience. Would not suggest anyone should stay here.
Review 67:Really un-friendly staff only available by telephone? No human interaction more MOTEL than Hotel. If you don't have the access codes before you leave home, you'll need access to your email to get them! - WILL NOT GIVE YOU THEM OVER THE PHONE! (Also limescale stained loo)
Review 68:Large room and comfortable bed
Review 69:Dirty,uncomfortable,getting parking ticket after following instructions, television broken, full of teenagers hanging around, took ages to type in code to open door, didn't feel safe couldn't speak to anyone worst place ever booked went and found another place to stay for 2nd night of our stay
Review 70:Close to town
Review 71:Arrived to find my neighbour had their room broken into, judging by the state of my door it didn't seem to be unusual
Review 72:The best thing was leaving in the morning
Review 73:Everything. Bundle of sneaky pretenders. Very unreliable, tired waste of money staff.
Review 74:Nothing is good. Very rude, dishonest and insensitive staff members.
Review 75:Somebody entering our room at 10pm be a use they had been texted the same details as us (same room number and same code to unlock the door)! The flat bed sheet was meant for a smaller bed.
Review 76:Location
Review 77:The noise from other people until earlie hours and the shower did not work to well, also could have done with more milk etc had to go out to but tea and milk
Review 78:Didn't realise it was a bit of a doss house; Sunday night a lot of workers arrived to stay for the week and it had a bit of an un-safe feel, guys hanging round the car park smoking and someone looked in our window and tried to open our door using code pad :-/
Review 79:Very central/close to shops etc. The code access is good
Review 80:The room was spartan. No drawers at all. not even a bedside cabinet. Even the light was dull and we had to take the shade off. Not a proper wardrobe. No remote for the TV. Heater in the shower room didn't work. The premises looked lie it is being run down. Cigerette buts all over the place etc!
Review 81:It was cheap.
Review 82:Parking ticket issued in Hotel car park.. Bed sheets not changed in my 11 day stay. Toilet paper ran out 2nd day. No tea ,coffee or milk. Nobody went in room 16 for the entire 11 day stay but me. TV remote missing and TV buttons broken.
Review 83:The day I left.
Review 84:No one onsite should you need anything- Although I imagine that is what keeps the price low
Review 85:Simple, Clean, Inexpensive- And still had a flat screen TV & Tea/Coffee making facilities.
Review 86:after getting there couldn't get into property wrong code numbers ,also after texting all our details had a parking ticket next day
Review 87:location to get to our party was okay
Review 88:Despite texting the number provided with all the details we were still issued with a £100 parking fine
Review 89:It's a hostel not a hotel and should be advertised as such
Review 90:Followed the parking instructions as per their email, and then getting a £100.00 parking ticket from them I was not alone, every guests car in their car park had a ticket. Carpet had lots of stains and was dirty. All in all not a good experience. And still waiting a reply from your customer service regarding the parking.
Review 91:Not a lot
Review 92:Parking. For older folks, signing in to npe too complicated andinstructions unclear. We have two tickets costing us £120.00 in total.Dirty carpet, and table top in the bedroom.
Review 93:Good position, adequate accommodation, but confusing information.
Review 94:No lighting outside the door to the room - could be dangerous, toilet could do with a bit of a clean, room okay apart from that.
Review 95:Location excellent, easy automated check-in, good value for money.
Review 96:not even any coat hangers in the wardrobe! don't expect to be able to park even though you arranged it! Bins outside overflowing Appaling accomodation
Review 97:Dirt Cheap!
Review 98:uncomfortable bed, just needs mattress cover and new bedding including pillows, would still stay here again though
Review 99:location and parking, value for money
Review 100:No hot water, room very hot, can hear people in other rooms easily (just talking voices), right next to a noisy pub with bands that doesn't close until midnight. No breakfast offered at additional cost. We wouldn't have stayed there had it not been for the offer (£31) and needing somewhere to stay at short notice to break up a journey. Would use again, but only at that discounted price.
Review 101:Reasonable price, spacious room, convenient location
Review 102:Everything was wrong. The loo was not flushing, shower leaking heavily. Staff at the Hotel are insensitive to customers needs. Staff holding their Emergency mobile number are very rude, arrogant and extremely unhelpful. Staying in this MJB Hill House Hotel in Dereham is very frustrating, stressful and regretable.
Review 103:The location is Ok.
Review 104:would have liked a few teabags and milk pots lots of coffee but do not drink it
Review 105:IT was close to the town it was convenient to the shops and visiting friends
Review 106:No staff on site, staff on phone unhelpful and become rude when we returned to room and there code for entry failed. There system for getting free parking is useless and seems a way they make extra out of guests giving them parking tickets of £60-100. Choose it because it fitted in our budget but with cost of parking ticket we could of stayed somewhere nice that provided breakfast! First time I have ever left a bad review but this place was an awful experience.
Review 107:We were located on the bottom floor next to the entrance door......everyone who used that door had trouble opening it so we were disturbed until 3 in the morning. We had to 3 times get out of bed to open the door for very irate guests. The lock on the door was very difficult to open.....it was a Saturday night so very busy....next night Sunday not as bad.....also I found that our window was left unlocked.....didn't notice till the second night. Also the bathroom looked clean but smelt of cabbage water. I couldn't wait to leave. Didnt know what to expect but certainly wouldn't use this type of hotel again. Seems we got what we paid for! Photos on the Internet very misleading.
Review 108:It soon became apparent that we were sharing the accomodation with permanent residents-seemingly social housing?? On the second night of our stay we were unable to park our car and had to park in a town centre carpark. We were fairly sure that non residents were using the carpark. We were provided with only x2 towels for x2 nights-no handtowels and no bath/shower mat. No mattress protector and the bedding was not ironed.
Review 109:Location.
Review 110:Underfurnished. Need for a table and two stacking chairs, coat hangers, sink-plug and outdoor (terace) facilities would have made a big difference. The room we had was large enough to include these items, and they wouldn't have been expensive.
Review 111:Convenient
Review 112:All your categories are too good for this awful place. The worse I haveever seen. The place was a social services hostel for drunk and dirtyEast Europeans. Walked in, saw it all and walked right out and booked insomewher else. How this can be described as a 'hotel' is beyondme. I have e-mailed your organisation to complain that it is advertisedas a hotel.
Review 113:Nothing!
Review 114:Shower did not work. Hole in bottom of electric shower unit so water poured out thereby no water made it to the shower head. Disappointing. Limited toilet roll too!!
Review 115:Basic room for a basic price. Clean though. Comfortable bed. Tea/coffee making facilities. Towels provided. Heater available.
Review 116:No staff in a dilapidated building, broken windows, all exterior lights broken. Sparse, dark, ill equiped, shabby. Didn't stay the night in such conditions. Very poor!
Review 117:Located in a lovely little town
Review 118:Poor lighting. No bedsite cabinets or other surfaces for belongings or cases. No cat hangers. Lack of staff on premises. Overpowering smell of disinfectant. Ludicrous texting process for parking. Misleading information (or lack of it) about what to expect. Left the room immediately and stayed elsewhere.
Review 119:Only the location which was once a very pleasant hotel. Whilst it was at least clean, it is now the equivalent of a surf lodge without the sea!
Review 120:The bed had long black hairs in it so we slept on top with our own bedding. The toilet was filthy and smelly.shower did not work properly. there was no tea as advertised.no one to speak to to fix the issues, glad I did not pay full price.
Review 121:The easy way to book and gain access to the room was great. The location was good. Parking was easy too.
Review 122:Hotel? no staff, text / email to confirm room and access codes to accommodation. text to confirm car parking although 100 mtrs away there is a large FREE car park, if you don't text your car reg a fine of £100 - £60 can be given. Other Hotels offer breakfast & internet for around the same price in the town centre (2 x hotels)
Review 123:location was central to town
Review 124:Had we had any complaints we would have had to report them immediately by email. I would not have been able to do that since my phone does not connect to the internet. Key codes by email only and on day of arrival - good job we were leaving from home and not 'on the road'.
Review 125:The location was good and easy to access once key codes had been notified. Felt more secure with a code than an actual key. Room temperature was good on a hot day.
Review 126:The hotel had no reception so it was quite confusing when we arrived as there was no one to ask directions just an email with some key codes. We were met on the stairs by a topless gentleman with his zipper down letting to females out of the main door, which made us feel very uncomfortable especially when we found he was a cleaner that worked at the hotel. We felt we had to put the coffee table up against the door as it felt unsafe, we are young women and I was on edge the entire night due to the lack of staff, the fact you couldn't physically lock the door and we knew others (cleaners etc) would have access to these codes, it seems the way the place is ran is with no order or anything. I would never stay here again, it was awful.
Review 127:Very uncomfortable bed, woman on phone condescending when I called for help with obtaining the door code, bed very cheap and uncomfortable and I got a parking fine whilst parked the free parking spot I booked!
Review 128:It was very cheap.
Review 129:poor cleanliness no chair in room no tv remote - tv hard to operate PARKING FINE despite texting details as requested would never use again!!
Review 130:location - lived in Dereham many years ago
Review 131:we did not receive the entry code until we stand outside the hotel and called the office,we got a parking ticket next day in the hotel car park! A lot of guests have been given a ticket , must be something wrong with this company . we then tried to call to resolve the parking issue, not one answer the phone for the entire day . I will never use this company again , suggest everyone else stay away from them.
Review 132:No toilet roll or soap provided. Dirty stained/muddy carpets. Noisy constant doors banging.
Review 133:Very cheap and good location, right in centre of Dereham, short walk from shops and restaurants. Helpful staff on phone but unmanned hotel.
Review 134:Everything! Please stay away paid £45 and I see why also seen other days are £28 don't pay as you could be fined for using the car park!
Review 135:No staff no reception just a key pad they text an entry code for. Called the 24 /7 phone numbers numerous times no answer. Another guest got a parking ticket for arrivong before 4 pm.
Review 136:No staff. All done by email "codes". List of don'ts with punishments for errors. Especially car park with £100 fine! "Flat screen tele", yes, but no remote! Single bare low wattage bulb not bright enough to read.
Review 137:Clean
The Fine Print
