Reviews for Yeoldon House Hotel

Review 1:Lovely place and owner couldn't be more helpful, breakfast was excellent. Needs a facelift for the bathrooms but that is happening so will be even better and will definitely revisit

Review 2:Charming about 16th C hunting lodge with fabulous views over the estuary. Have never experienced better hosts than Ilona and John. Made you feel welcome from the start and made us feel very much at home.

Review 3:No dinners available out of season.

Review 4:We had a short stay, but it was enjoyable. We received a warm welcome and were offered tea and coffee while we were waiting to check in. The room was spacious and the bed, very comfortable. A beautiful setting, worth another visit.

Review 5:The fact that considering it was a hotel there was no restaurant for dinner. So we had to drive to find one. The shower was not good. Could have had tissues in the room.,seeing as it was £125 per night.

Review 6:Position brilliant. Staff lovely.

Review 7:trading on reputation of last owner dinner served only 2 nights a week same menu for both nights with outside caterers 2 courses £35

Review 8:the position

Review 9:bedroom was dirtythick dust chipped sink, wallpaper scratched room was so dark it was like sleeping in a cave. The room has not been decorated for years the bathroom needs updated howling dogs in room opposite .The nerve of charging £125.00 a night they should have paid us to stay there

Review 10:nice view but as we arrived late and there was no lights in garden

Review 11:Not a criticism, but there was no restaurant facility at the hotel which they had decided to close. It would have been nice to have been able to eat there on occasion rather than drive out each evening to other venues, especially after a busy day out exploring.

Review 12:Excellent location and very friendly staff

Review 13:The only (very small) complaint was that our shower took a long time to get even lukewarm, and the water pressure was weak. It's an old building, so this is understandable, but could use improvement.

Review 14:The owners are so friendly and helpful, and made us feel comfortable immediately, starting with tea in the garden.

Review 15:Thought drinks at the bar a bit expensive . Could have improved the way the food sample menu was designed and shown , as shown seemed pricey although no clear indication of what was actually available in the restaurant without actually asking for a menu which can be awkward

Review 16:The comfort of the bed excellent . The peace and setting superb Friendly owners

Review 17:The only grip was we never had a garden view from our room unless you opened the window and leant out.

Review 18:The location and Gardens a good central base for North Devon Attractions

Review 19:There was no need to finish breakfast at 0900 and check out by 1030. A leisure hotel does not need these restrictions because we are trying to escape deadlines on holiday. A spread of guests means some would be up and away early anyway, some may wish to linger.

Review 20:Breakfasts

Review 21:This is a part of England to die for - rolling green hills with a gentle river down the valley, summer sun to wake up to, all from the comfort of your bedroom window. We were lucky to have the top floor garden/river facing room with a balcony and we were blessed with Englishness. in the evening after a day out getting to know the area, we were able to enjoy champagne on the terrace and watch the world go by, boaters on the river, listen to birds singing (mainly curlews) and rabbits running on the lawn. Just brilliant.

Review 22:in general in all hotels the price single travellers have to pay for a bed.

Review 23:Flexible table arrangements for a group to eat Having my case carried upstairs Thoughtful and kindly staff The lovely garden and views of the estuary.

Review 24:Our room although very comfortable was advertised as with a garden view. It was over the kitchen which was busy till 10.45pm and the view was of a grassy slope unlike the rest of the lovely gardens, so feel price a little too much.

Review 25:The hotel was as remembered from our last visit when we attended a family function there. The main out look of the hotel and the comfortable well furnished rooms are worth the visit..

Review 26:Dinner was very formal and the menu was very rich - which was great for one night, but having come back from a long walk on the second night it would have been good to be able to choose something simple and plain - consequently we choose to go out to a pub that evening. - A good smart formal restaurant.

Review 27:Very warm welcome, friendly staff. We were offered an upgrade when we arrived and decided to take on the extra flight of stairs to have a wonderful view over the river and a balcony (not suitable for children).

Review 28:The lounge area was really lovely but a few more 'comfy' chairs would be nice to sit and relax in.

Review 29:The hotel is picture perfect, set in beautiful gardens with a stunning view to the river. The house is gorgeous, the staff were genuinely lovely and the food in the restaurant was top quality.

Review 30:The hotel was extremely clean. Much attention has been given to tasteful redecoration and furnishing. The gardens, too, added to the overall effect of a well maintained and very pleasant place in which to stay. The owners and staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 31:The lounge could benefit from some additional comfortable seating

Review 32:Lovely location, stunning views, the owners were very friendly, helpful and made us feel very welcome.

Review 33:The hotel is a good base to visit North Devon coastal attractions. The owners and staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel also has a restaurant serving really good food.

Review 34:Ilona & John are the most charming of people really thoughtful and caring about the whole experience. The place is full of charm and character and very very tastefully furnished. Nothing was to much trouble.

Review 35:Location and views; comfortable elegance of public rooms; hugely welcoming and friendly owners and staff; fantastic dinner and excellent breakfasts; easy access to RHS Rosemoor and other N Devon attractions.

Review 36:Few dining options nearby - had to walk 30 mins to Bideford; owners would do well to research local sights and dining choices to improve advice to guests

Review 37:A beautiful home; friendly welcome including afternoon tea; comfortable room and an excellent night's sleep; good breakfast; Wifi worked very well

Review 38:the proprietors were excellent they went the extra mile for my auntie who was celebrating her 100 birthday and all the staff made the weekend extra special

Review 39:A very friendly welcome, very nice touches (shortbread with a welcoming cup of coffee, canapé with a pre dinner drink), lovely evening meal with excellent service and a personal chat with the chef afterward. All the staff we came into contact with made every effort to make our stay enjoyable.

Review 40:Not really much to say. Room was comfortable and clean.

Review 41:The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the food. We ate in the hotel restaurant in the evening. The food was superb - cooked perfectly and well presented. The chef also spoke to diners personally about the food - its sourcing and prep.

Review 42:We were met by a member of staff who tried to explain they didn't cater for under 10's. Which was not indicated on the website. The travel cot had no mattress and the room was pokey and freezing cold. Had to leave in the middle of the night as my child could not sleep...

Review 43:Arrived at 20.30 after 12hrs drive , asked if I get a sandwich and was told no ! Disappointed , tired and hungry !

Review 44:Bed and bath run quick. Location good

Review 45:There was nothing in particular to dislike. However, the bedroom was slightly quirky with the wash basin not in the en-suite bathroom/toilet. The reason was obvious though, as the shape of the bathroom could not accommodate the basin.

Review 46:I liked the welcome with a pot of tea and help with our luggage (which is unusual these days). The large lounge was very comfortable and it has a well stocked bar at sensible prices. The 26 year old head chef has designs on a Michelin Star so the food was of exceptional quality, and there was an unusually comprehensive wine list. In general, the service was excellent with the bonus of friendly staff. I thought it was good value for money.

Review 47:The elegant old building has recently been taken over by new owners who have a lot of work to do to bring this tired hotel up to standard. The water pressure is very feeble in the shower and our bathroom was tiny. The restaurant is closed on Sunday.

Review 48:Very friendly, helpful staff and owners. Lovely location. Beautiful gardens. Good food.

Review 49:very tired bathroom with a shower over the bath but no light if shower curtains shut. Asked to be specific about time for breakfast Expensive evening meal

Review 50:size of the room and the bed View across the river Hotel grounds Very nice evening meal

Review 51:Nothing

Review 52:Very friendly reception and good service. Clean comfortable room with excellent views across the river. Superb dining experience. Plenty of car parking space. Ideally situated for exploring North Devon.

Review 53:Areas of the building a bit dark; but we know the new owners plan great alterations. Surprised at the size and cost(!) of our evening meal. though iit was certainly well cooked and presented.

Review 54:Good Location. friendly welcome and throughout, comfortable room, good breakfast, quiet location. Room upgraded when a larger one became available

Review 55:no complaints whatsoever

Review 56:Felt welcome and comfortable upon arrival. Lovely food and clean and comfortable room overlooking the lovely garden and river. Excellent bed for a quiet night's sleep

Review 57:made to feel very welcome - the food on Saturday evening was great and as a very nice touch they wished us a happy anniversary on the pudding plate! - We planned a treat for ourselves and that is what it was

Review 58:1970s decor Cobwebs in bathroom Obnoxious stuffy management Dangerously low wall fronting balcony to 2 storey drop Overpriced

Review 59:The view from crows nest balcony Pleasant staff I'm sure it used to be great and maybe there's not much competition locally, but...

Review 60:Nothing - I thoroughly enjoyed my holiday.

Review 61:An attractive and quiet place to stay with a view of the river from the lovely garden and the rooms on the front.

Review 62:We could not open the window because In our garden view double room we could smell food being cooked in the kitchen below. We would select a different room next time if one was available

Review 63:Warm and friendly hosts Comfortable Lounge/Bar area Nice bright dining room Good views

Review 64:The bedroom was small and very average for the price.

Review 65:The dinner (at extra price) was very good. The common areas of the guest house were very comfortable.

Review 66:The bedrooms were dreadful. The wallpaper was dark green, red and cream with stripes on the bottom half and flowers on the top and floral curtains. The paintwork was dark green making the whole room dark and depressing. I had booked river view rooms and we were given garden view rooms, the garden being a grass bank with a few shrubs. The sink had a crack in it and the wardrobe/cupboard was like the black hole of Calcutta. When we left, our friends complained about their bathroom and were told that the rooms needed upgrading but we were still charged full price. Oh and unless you are prepared to pay £7.50 for a glass of bog standard Pinot, don't use the bar !

Review 67:The gardens at the front of the Hotel were excellent

Review 68:Bed a little too soft for us Tiny portions at breakfast but lovely food.

Review 69:Great view, lovely house and gardens. Staff were very helpful. Just a wonderful place to stay we have booked to go back

Review 70:The shower was very poor but the bathroom clean and hot water for the bath plentiful. Room at back over kitchen described as garden view just a grassy bank not what I expected!

Review 71:The room was a little small and the bathroom could do with modernisation. The bar area is a little dated, but the manager is well aware of this and has plans that should see this hotel take on a new lease of life.

Review 72:The restaurant was excellent. We tried lots of different dishes and can recommend the chef's recommendations. It seemed like a Michelin starred kitchen without the prices. From the welcoming pot of tea to the chat about Lundy Island, the family were delightful. We were really made to feel welcome. Everyone went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. We would not hesitate to go there again and, in fact, we can't wait to see how the family develop this wonderful place and continue to bring it to life.

Review 73:There was nothing we didn't like

Review 74:View to the river Close to appledore and great pub Friendly and efficient service Slept really well - great bed and bedding Lovely breakfast

Review 75:a fantastic quiet location yet close to the towns, beaches and sights. only stayed for one night but could have stayed longer - such a lovely hotel, staff very helpful, food excellent.

Review 76:Cramped en suite bathroom with poor water pressure in WC - but all bathrooms being refurbished this Autumn. Difficult to find Hotel from Google map - not owners' fault but would have helped if directed to take Private Road next to Durrant Hotel!

Review 77:Personal service provided by new owners - nothing too much trouble. Excellent dinner and breakfasts.Beautiful, well-kept garden with great views over the river estuary.Seating outside the bar in gazebo - we had fantastic weather.for 2 days golf at Royal North Devon Golf Course near-by - celebrating 150 years with overseas visitors, many staying at this hotel.

Review 78:Our bedroom was at the top of the house and was rather too warm after an unusually long spell of hot weather for Devon. The speed of the WiFi was reasonably good but it did tend to "drop out" periodically.

Review 79:Yeoldon House is set in a stunning location at the end of a private road overlooking the Torridge estuary. The welcome was warm, with a complimentary cup of tea in the lounge. We sat in the sunshine in the garden before dinner on the evening of our arrival enjoying the peace and quiet. Service and food at dinner were both very good and there was a well-chosen wine list. The room was comfortable with a spacious bathroom and endless hot water. We were able to arrange dinner for ourselves and a friend at very short notice on the second night of our stay and the food was again very good.

Review 80:The decor in our room was extremely garish and the bathroom was very outdated, but both were spotlessly clean. The owner told us this room is the next for renovation, but don't let the decor put you off. Everything else far outweighs the negatives.

Review 81:The very new owners were wonderful and could not do enough to ensure we were happy with everything. We booked at fairly late notice but were given the choice of two rooms on arrival. We chose a room overlooking the rear of the house and could watch the rabbits, squirrels and birds in the beautiful garden from bed! The bed was the most comfortable I have slept in for years, I wish I could have brought it home with me! The owners have big ideas for renovating the entire house and exacting standards for cleanliness and comfort. Fabulous accommodation, food and location.

Review 82:Super evening meal but would have liked a more extensive menu.

Review 83:Friendly service, nothing too much trouble. beautiful gardens, peaceful atmosphere, great breakfast

Review 84:Fantastic location, helpful and friendly staff. Great breakfast served with extremely nice tea. Would recommend to family and friends.

Review 85:Welcoming, friendly and helpful. Great views over water and walk in the garden. Delicious breakfast.

Review 95:We felt very well looked after. We were made to feel very welcome. We will stay there again.

Review 96:Not aware that the hotel does not offer food in the evenings.

Review 97:Very friendly and service excellent.

Review 98:Charming and pleasant owners Made to feel welcome Secluded with great views over the estuary

Review 99:Very welcoming and beautiful gardens

Review 100:The restaurant was only open 3 nights and menu very limited and unchanged over the three nights

Review 101:Location and garden excellent

Review 102:This place has everything you would imagine for leisure. I could not ask for more.

Review 103:The owners were super friendly and helpful.

Review 104:Lovely house,fantastic views,exceptional staff.

Review 105:The setting is so beautiful, the garden would win prizes, it was quiet, we'll run and the food was delicious.
