Reviews for Cairn Hotel
Review 1:It would be a bonus if a secure safe could be available in the rooms. Not a serious issue as valuables can be left securely in reception.
Review 2:Wonderful period hotel, Most of the original features retained . Decor starting to show its age but to be expected in old buildings like this . To update and modernise would spoil completely the ambience of the place. Large , spacious and very warm. Our room was well equipped and very clean, we felt comfortable and relaxed. Staff on reception and in the bar first class, nothing too much trouble. Excellent breakfast . We will defiantly return in the summer for a couple of days to explore further afield around Harrogate.
Review 3:Hotel very out dated needs a lot of money spending on it ,but money doesn't grow on trees so doubt it will ever happen. But very good value for money compared to the other hotels in the area
Review 4:Staff and breakfast fine plus location
Review 5:Bathroom looked tired and could do with a freshen up, old bath and grouting but was clean. Single beds were small.
Review 6:Location excellent, 7 mins from Harrogate International Centre, 10 mins to main shopping area, near to cafes etc. Staff very friendly and helpful. Really large bedroom (superior twin), large tv. Lovely choice for breakfast.
Review 7:Corridors to rooms looked a bit drab and institutional . Could do with better decor and a few pictures. Building work to the rear did not compliment the view
Review 8:Hotel had lot of character
Review 9:We were not told that building work was an ongoing item, choice of meals was poor
Review 10:Location and the look of the hotel outside and inside the public areas
Review 11:Disco man on evening of 16/12/15 the volume was far too loud. Many people departed instead of listening - including myself
Review 12:The food was much improved since my last visit. Entrance door no longer bangs Staff most helpful
Review 13:Wifi wasn't available in the room and needed to pay £5 to get wifi in room for 24 hrs. Wifi was free in hotel lobby.
Review 14:The hotel's architecture is lovely. Ample free parking spaces available. The room and rest of hotel was clean. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good.
Review 15:The only person who was a bit grumpy was the singer in the evening! I think it's because we out shone him with our dancing and enjoyment of the evening.
Review 16:The staff were helpful, I was even offered the use of one staff member's umbrella as it was pouring down. Staff were helpful. The room was pleasant and suitably clean. Breakfast was yummy and lots of choice.
Review 17:Excellent location for the International Centre and the shops, only a few minutes walk. The free parking at the hotel makes your stay stress free. Rooms clean but old. Breakfast very nice. Asked for quiet room as a Christmas party was held the night we stayed, staff found this for us.
Review 18:With us staying on the first floor we could here music and people till 1 o'clock in the morning. Plus you could here people walk pass the room due to creaky floor boards. Definitely
Review 19:How spacious the room was. Location was perfect really close to the Xmas festival and harrogate centre.
Review 20:The window frames are very old and had 3 windows that rattled. I had to jam books and leaflets to stop them rattling as it was extremely windy outside.
Review 21:The room was comfortable and bathroom adequate. Breakfast very good and staff very helpful.
Review 22:Breakfast ok but felt quality of bacon sausages etc could be better. Very large hotel felt its main market was coach parties etc. A little impersonal.
Review 23:Location and ease of parking excellent. Most Staff tried very hard.
Review 24:Breakfast finished at 9.0am on Saturday! We had problems getting room service and it was expensive. The staff didn't seem to know what they were doing when we rang reception. The room was not at all cosy and the beds and pillows were uncomfortable.
Review 25:The breakfast. Had to wait for a table for 15 mins, Chef who served us looked grumpy. The sausages were horrible so I ordered pancakes, they came under cooked, no sugar no lemon. Lovely waiter bought me a coissant, serving staff v nice.
Review 26:Great location, good size room, great value for money based on accomodation but starting to look a bit tired.
Review 27:Wouldn't eat in the restaurant for dinner again i didn't think it was ala cart a little disappointed. We had the carvery.
Review 28:Close proximity to town. Service brilliant
Review 29:The mattress was very hard and uncomfortable and gave us a very unsettled nights sleep. No window blind in the bathroom made us feel a little vulnerable. Had to shower in the dark.
Review 30:Room was small but very clean. Good breakfast. Located very near to the town.
Review 31:This hotel is being refurbished which means some of the rooms are looking a little tired, but the good out ways the bad
Review 32:The location, the staff who are very helpful especially the reception.
Review 33:The hotel would benefit from some TLC, £110.00 is a little steep for a small twin that needs some updating.
Review 34:The location and ease of parking. Reception staff were very good.
Review 35:The view from our room was of another room but we weren't there long enough for it to worry us.
Review 36:Lovely building with impressive original features. Extremely polite & helpful staff. Very clean hotel - perhaps decor a little tired. Food & restaurant facilities good. Just yards from the conference centre we were attending with a great free car park!
Review 37:Plenty of parking and a good location just a 5 minute stroll into town. The staff were really friendly and it the breakfast was pretty good. No problems with heating as reported in previous reviews.
Review 38:we couldn't plug in the kettle as there was no nearby point to use. had to move it across to the desk but this was a minor hitch.
Review 39:the ambience of the building. my uncle worked at the hotel in the 1960s/70s so I wanted to see what the hotel was like. my friend & I were not disappointed.
Review 40:All the staff were friendly and professional. The room was comfortable and clean and breakfast was lovely. I will definitely recommend this hotel to others.
Review 41:Just returned from a hotel in York and that was a friendly welcoming hotel. Staff put themselves out to make our stay a joyful one. Sorry but we didn't get the same here.We had to place our case into the cleaners cupboard for hold until our room was ready.
Review 42:The restaurant staff were not very welcoming...putting us in a dark corner even though there was plenty of well lit areas, bought the wine and just plonked it on the table, only to find out that it wasn't the one we ordered, mumbled descriptions of food, didn't clear other tables till end of service...all of this spoilt our meal.
Review 43:Hotel was well located and very warm and cosy. Staff in reception were friendly and welcoming.
Review 44:comfortable, pleasant surroundings, helpful and polite staff. Love the old world charm. We have stayed once before and loved it. Good food, nice room.
Review 45:We were meant to have a superior double room but it was very small certainly a lot smaller than other bedrooms. Although the hotel is advertised as with parking there are some occasions when they dont have enough room.Coaches were allowed to park in the place allocated for persons in the event of a fire.
Review 46:The staff were very helpful and friendly
Review 47:Hotel Management Staff in general. Attitude was very rude and ignorant. Unfortunately as we had paid in advance so we were in no position to do anything. I felt so strongly about the poor customer care that we basically had no option but to move to another hotel. This has left a very bitter experience hence the review. Terrible!!!
Review 48:Harrogate was great. Fantastic weekend with friends. Horrible hotel. Management staff were rude and ignorant
Review 49:Lack of warmth due to poor insulation Rooms with minimum of facilities Upgrading of fabric of building needed Inadequate menu range at breakfast on in particular evening meal
Review 50:Location to town centre far enough from main road to be undisturbed by traffic
Review 51:It was cold!! I wore extra clothes to bed because the room was so chilly. Radiator was on full, but not getting hot. I know others had a similar issue.
Review 52:Good location and reasonable price
Review 53:Some very noisy guests near our room!
Review 54:Although the hotel is a little dated it's well located in the centre of Harrogate with plenty of parking. Staff are helpful but the best thing is the cooked breakfast, the sausages are amazing sourced from the Yorkshire meat company.
Review 55:Lack of heating in the bathroom, the radiator in the bedroom said caution very hot but was only warm.. breakfast we had to queue to then be told to help ourselves to tea and coffee and wait to be called.
Review 56:Location.
Review 57:There was no "intimate" bar facilities where a guest could relax after a day out in Harrogate. There were facilities for a relaxing drink, but there was no atmosphere as the lounge was large and impersonal.
Review 58:Location was perfect, parking good, rooms good, breakfast excellent.
Review 59:The atmosphere in the hotel was lovely, and the our room was spacious and extremely good value. We loved eating in the rather grand dining room and the choice and service at breakfast was excellent. The fact we could park at the hotel and walk conveniently into Harrogate was a great plus for us and certainly added to the overall enjoyment of our weekend.
Review 60:Nothing bad but a little faded.
Review 61:The staff were excellent, the cleanliness of the room and bathroom also excellent. The breakfast offered a very good selection of food.
Review 62:Not a bad experience but feel the hotel decor could do with updating.
Review 63:Excellent location with lovely helpful staff. Breakfast was one of the best I've ever had in a hotel.
Review 64:The breakfast, !! we had to queue. Then had to wait 15 mins to beseated. Then had to queue for food, only one person serving. When we gotit it was not good. The set-up was unacceptable. We just left key atreception. We had limited time to get to our next place.
Review 65:Cleanliness and pleasant staff.
Review 66:Slight problems with the waitress not understanding our breakfast order as her English was not good but the matter was settled with humour. Breakfast toast, bread, coffee and preserves could have been better quality. Corporate hotel so not very intimate but this was to be expected. Not very imaginative vegetarian options on all menus.
Review 67:Clean quiet large room. Friendly staff and plenty of them. Conveniently situated for the town. Spacious hotel.
Review 68:Only 5 minute walk from the centre of Harrogate. Lovely quaint Victorian Hotel with original features - if you are used to and prefer modern concrete built hotels this is not for you! Very quiet and cosy. Free parking so no need to look for car parks.
Review 69:The hotel is a five minute walk from the town centre with free parking and wi-fi in the lounge area. We have been staying for years and really like it. The foyer is lovely. It is a traditional hotel so anyone looking for chrome and glass may not like it but it is comfortable. Bar meals are good and inexpensive. Very convenient to visit York, Leeds and Ripon. Bus stop outside the hotel.
Review 70:No bad experience at all, just a few minor points about the bedroom. I realise that you are still in the process of improving the hotel bit by bit, but odd bits of decoration or repair need to be done, particularly in the bathroom. However this is no way inconvenienced me.
Review 71:The friendliness and willingness to help of the staff, on reception and in the restaurant particularly. One of your staff even very kindly showed me the hydrotherapy room downstairs, and I found your bookelt about the hotel and Harrogate very informative. The good cuisine, wide selection, attractive presentation of food; comfortable and well equipped bedroom.
Review 72:Liked everything.
Review 73:Friendly and helpful staff, lovely breakfast, good room at very reasonable price. Easy parking and within walking distance to Royal Hall theatre and shops.
Review 74:The only problem was finding and accessing the hotel in the dark and the rain off the very busy Ripon Road. Could there be access from Duchy Road. (Maybe there was if we had known?)
Review 75:We enjoyed the unexpected entertainment in the bar in the evening. Breakfast was good and the staff were pleasant.
Review 76:The staff failed to wake me up and I nearly missed my lecture - when I questioned why I didn't get the wake up call they weren't even apologetic.
Review 77:I loved the full English breakfast and the beds were very comfortable too.
Review 78:Ideal location for the Conference Centre and the town centre. Friendly and polite staff a comfortable hotel. This was our second visit and if we return to Harrogate we will definately stay again.
Review 79:The value for money for the room as the room was basic and could have done with a up lift bath room as well needed up dating
Review 80:The hotel was clean the reception area was amazing
Review 81:We had dinner early on the Sunday evening. The menu included a salmon choice which was ordered by the ladies in the group only to be told that there was none available.
Review 82:The hotel itself, whilst it is an old building,is in good order and has many up to date facilities. It is conveniently situated for the town centre. The breakfast menu has a wide choice and was most welcome-especially the porridge!!We enjoyed our stay and would return when next in Harrogate.
Review 83:The place was old, dated and my sheets smelled of cigarettes. There was hair in the sink and the place generally didn't feel very hygienic.
Review 84:The location was good.
Review 85:Parking can be a bit of a problem, due to the popularity of the hotel at the weekends.
Review 86:Perfectly situated for exploring Harrogate. Hotel is packed with old world charm. great bar & restaurant area. Staff excellent. Food very good. Perhaps a little faded in places but that is a minor quibble.
Review 87:Decor a bit tired. The first room we were given stank of cigarettes, like it was used as a smoking room. Very disgusting. We informed the front desk and the was no problem moving us to a different room.
Review 88:Good location. Polite helpful staff
Review 89:Extremely old fashioned and looked like it needs a complete refurb, having old fashioned keys which you had to drop in a box was strange in this day and age!!
Review 90:Nice pleasant staff, nice breakfast, free upgrade on arrival.
Review 91:The only thing I can complain about is breakfast only Luke warm. I like hot food
Review 92:Staff very pleasant & helpful.Dog friedly to the extent that you can order your meal and sit with your dog in a small dining area away from other diners
Review 93:Hotel in need of a paint up but they appeared to be on with it. The towels in the room were really thin and hard .
Review 94:Really good location. Lots of places to sit and relax inside the hotel. Very friendly staff
Review 95:Ordered two poached eggs on toast, which were inedible due to the over powering taste/smell of viniger. The brown toast was always burnt, the milk, cereal & fruit, containers were mostly empty by 8.30am and we had to ask for them to be replenished most mornings.
Review 96:The staff were all excellent. The chambermaid in particular warrants a special mention. The room was always spotless throughout our stay.
Review 97:Friendly helpful staff, great atmosphere Rooms clean but a little rough round the edges.... Taste of an old Spa Hotel from the turn of the century
Review 98:The politeness from every member of staff, from cleaners to reception staff, they wee all so friendly and nice. The room (152) was spacious clean and well served, the chambermaid (housekeeper) for our room was very helpful a real pleasant lass.
Review 99:Still could do with refurbishing in some parts which will probably be a never ending job.
Review 100:As always the meals are always excellent .staff are always on hand to help.have stayed at the cairns for a number of years and we have always had an enjoyable time,
Review 101:It's a Victorian hotel, so some of the decor is looking a bit faded, floors creak and so on. It all adds to the atmosphere.
Review 102:Lovely location, good public spaces, free wifi, helpful staff.
Review 103:Nothing, my 3rd stay there and have booked it for family as well!
Review 104:I love the grand old fashioned entrance and lobby, bet there were real grand do's there in past years! The Cairns looks like a hotel should do, forget all the modern glass ones!
Review 105:We stayed in room 113 the noise from the ballroom below was unacceptable
Review 106:Lovely period hotel in great location. Well maintained, very clean and friendly staff.
Review 107:The food was poor. Though not expensive, was not good value for money either. The aroma in the restaurant reminiscent of school dinners. Not dissimilar in taste also!. This was a kitchen that was not trying very hard and content to serve unimaginative and mediocre fare.
Review 108:Public rooms pleasant. Traditional hotel.
Review 109:Sausages at breakfast looked rather pink, so had to leave it. Windows in room, especially bathroom were draughty and cold, paintwork a little old.
Review 110:Room pleasant, friendly staff.
Review 111:Hotel does need a spruce up throughout. Dining room is particularly shabby.
Review 112:Good location. A convenient distance from centre of town. Good parking. Large lounge area. Suited our purpose as a place to meet up with friends for a couple of days. Lucia's restaurant a short walk away is fab for a dinner choice.
Review 113:The only thing to complain about were the squeaky floor boards to the rear of the hotel and could also do with new cushions on lounge chairs
Review 114:All the staff were great, really friendly and the room staff did a really good job with the cleaning. Only staying b+b found the breakfast good (proper sausages) and a decent choice.
Review 115:The décor needs updating as quite dated. we had a meal in the restaurant which was adequate but very basic
Review 116:Clean rooms. Friendly staff. Very good location if wanting to walk into Harrogate
Review 117:the rooms were a little too warm during the night. Decor is a little tired but would stay there again.
Review 118:Friendly & helpful staff, comfy beds & fab breakfast.
Review 119:No toiletries in the bathroom. Having to pay for the hotel as soon as we arrived it did say on the booking that we wouldn't need to pay until check out.
Review 120:Staff were very friendly and helpful some really went out of their way to ensure are requests were met without fuss. The location was good. Everywhere was very clean.
Review 121:A bit dated but does not detract from the whole experience.
Review 122:Convenient, clean and pleasant atmosphere. Breakfast very nice,.food hot,.service very.helpful. Scones at teatime particularly delicious.
Review 123:Room very small. Service very slow at breakfast and requested toast didn't arrive until we asked a different waiter for it again.
Review 124:Comfortable bed. Good choice for breakfast.
Review 125:Not really bad more disappointing; there wasn't any shampoo & conditioner in the room. And the cooked breakfast was disappointing. I also felt cheated when I ordered tea for three & it came to just under £10!!
Review 126:Spacious lounges & nice quiet rooms.
Review 127:I paid for a upgrade and was very disappointed as I don't have any idea what extra I got .certainly won't pay for a upgrade again
Review 128:The location was ideal
Review 129:Not really bad but the bedrooms could do with an up date.
Review 130:Quaint if not dated large room with comfy beds, food was very good and everywhere was clean. Shower worked well. Staff friendly and helpful.
Review 131:Room was clean but tatty. The shower must have been built for midgets as couldn't fit underneath. Also the bedding was like cryton factor three different layers of differing lengths!
Review 132:Lovely staff and location. Lounge and bar area really welcoming.
Review 133:Hotel decor a little tired, breakfast would not win any awards. Shower in room was temperamental in getting the right temperature
Review 134:Staff friendly and helpful, Receptionist Googled & printed off a map and directions to a local attraction for me, bar facilities good,
Review 135:Bedroom was lovely but toilet a bit wobbly but apart from that nothing
Review 136:The hotel excellent food breakfast evening meal and snack menu was very nice no faulting
Review 137:Gentleman behind the bar during the evening was very dour, not a smile in sight.
Review 138:Excellent location, just a short walk into centre of Harrogate. Breakfast was really good quality & freshly cooked. Lovely old property that could be absolutely fabulous if it was updated, looking a bit tired now but good value for money.
