Reviews for Mandolay

Review 1:Parked car in car park and was covered in bird droppings, could have been warned by staff not to park under the tree. Had to clean car before leaving.

Review 2:Good clean room. Excellent location.

Review 3:Limited parking, unwelcoming and aloof staff, changed room to one with bath but, for the 5 minutes I was in original room, it was very noisy both from neighbouring rooms and from road.

Review 4:There was no one to take my luggage, so I had to take them to my room. There is no elevator. Also, the room was cold even when windows were closed.

Review 5:Good Location and comfortable bed

Review 6:Room a bit stuffy and hot. Bit of noise from function until early hours. Staff chatting loudly outside room at 6am on Sunday!! Not enough tea bags and milk in the room.

Review 7:Lovely hotel, warm and comfortable. Complimentary newspapers, delicious breakfasts, Molton Brown toiletries.

Review 8:Bottled water with glasses in room would be nice. However, we were able to get a jug of iced water from the bar.

Review 9:Quite happy with everything. Lucky with car parking at front. Very good breakfast with friendly and helpful staff.

Review 10:Being woken at 11:45 to tell me I had not signed the bar/food bill despite having already lodged my card details on checkin.

Review 11:Have stayed there before it meets all my needs on business

Review 12:Not enough parking. It took three attempts to get champagne to my room-not impressed. Menu stated 24 hours-I ended up eating crisps!

Review 13:Good location-nice bar.

Review 14:Room too small, very noisey could hear everything through the walls and people walking upstairs. Room was far too hot no air con and too noisey to open the window can hear extractor fan. Nothing like it looks on the pictures

Review 15:Good location, comfortable bed.

Review 16:Noise from other guests. After being woken up from around 3- 4 am. Which resulted in us packing up and leaving at 7.

Review 17:We like the location, previously we have been happy.

Review 18:This hotel was situated in a good location, within walking distance to shops and other amenities. Room was clean and comfortable for the one night I stayed. Also, very helpful, down-to-earth reception staff!

Review 19:My bedroom was positioned underneath the bar - so I had to put up with high heels and furniture being moved all night - I mentioned it to reception a couple of times and even had to get my ear phones from the car to drown it out. I complained in the morning and was told I would be contacted by the manager - he never called - shame because I visit that area a lot - I won't return to the Mandolay again

Review 20:Convenient located

Review 21:However never book into Room 9 as it has a massive extractor fan for the kitchen right outside the window and this came on at 6am, not what you want on New years day!! The drone was like sitting in a 747 waiting for take off!! You really need to sort this Mandolay or take this room out of service.

Review 22:Stayed here for New Years Eve, Hotel, staff and food good and a good New Years eve function.

Review 23:The rooms were very hot which made it difficult to sleep. Also there were some very noisy guests both nights and sound seems to carry throughout the hotel.

Review 24:Very nicely decorated and in a great location for the town centre

Review 25:The heat in the hotel. We had our air con on low for the duration and the main reception area was too hot also. When we told the girl at reception on check out she wasn't interested and she was also quite off hand to the guest before me. No View from our room in the roof of hotel. Also small room for an executive room.

Review 26:The location near to town etc The breakfast was very nice.

Review 27:A very difficult step to see outside Room 108 which resulted in my having a fall. Reported to Reception. Hope they make future guests aware of this step.

Review 28:Lovely comfortable room. Only stayed one night so facilities not used, including breakfast.

Review 29:Room was warm and the window did not open properly. Found the bed a little uncomfortable as the buttons on the mattress could be felt.

Review 30:Staff superb, efficient and friendly. Great shower. Large beds and plenty of pillows.

Review 31:Outrageous prices at the hotel bar. £12.90 for a double spirit and mixer! Breakfast service was an absolute disaster.

Review 32:They very kindly switched our room when we were unhappy with our first assignment.

Review 33:The room, the noise (sound of flushing loos all night. I appreciate its Xmas party season but this was booked some months ago surely someone partying could have had this room ! I as told when booking that you had no lift ! The bad smell from bathroom all resulted in us leaving at 6:00am to go home !!

Review 34:It was close to glive

Review 35:Parking situation, single room = broom cupboard , staff not helpful or interested in a request I had to use my laptop for some as room too small. Website and pictures of rooms don't add up to what you actually get. Nobody asked how my stay was , surprised because of the high service they promote on their site.

Review 36:Nothing

Review 37:When arrived was told I had an Executive room which was in a separate building. This was meant to be a positive thing, but room lock didn't work, wifi didn't work and room noisy ( from other rooms)

Review 38:My room was in the basement, which was again really modern, but a rabbit warren of corridors and stairs. The room overall was small and the en suite cramped.

Review 39:Decor and presentation really good.

Review 40:The room was very small, with only a very small press under the television stand to hang clothes. Very disappointed after looking at the lovely big rooms they have to offer on their website.

Review 41:The staff were excellent and very friendly and helpful.

Review 42:Our first room was ok with a wet room like I asked but unfortunately it had a drainage problem and smelt after we had a shower.

Review 43:The location and the second room we were placed in.

Review 44:Room v hot, and was in basement, with v small window, it felt slightly prison like.... Car park was full and had to pay additional £10 to park around the back which I felt was unreasonable.

Review 45:Central location

Review 46:Check in staff very rude... all interested in was taking the money for the car park as if I was going to run a way with out paying. Over priced Breakfast. The rooms very small.

Review 47:Location

Review 48:The fact a spa was advertised online and in the hotel and it had been closed.

Review 49:Wasn't happy with first room and we was accommodated well. Ended up with an actual double room where the first was just a single. The staff were polite and friendly.very helpful.

Review 50:£10 per night to park on site, use car park at G-Live much cheaper. £17.50 for a full english breakfast. Was upgraded to an executive suite but it wasn't that big a room, wouldn't like to see a normal room.

Review 51:Good location for shows at G-Live. Walking distance for shopping. Clean and tidy room

Review 52:At reception the main computer faces away from desk, forcing staff to turn there backs on guests.

Review 53:The whole trip made me feel relaxed and staff were extremely helpful.

Review 54:Book the Raddisson which is 3 minutes walk away and worth the price it charges. You pay premium rates and get miserable staff who make the experience even less pleasant that the laughable rooms and facilities. Even the Lenny Henry advertised chain are a better quality and standard than is on offer here. The breakfast service was pitiful with lots of empty food warmers... Awful, just awful. Plus being kept awake until wee small hrs by guests with music and sex on all sides, and the laundry room next to us in operation all night... Then at 6 the sound of reception in high heels above stomping on the ceiling .... If you get a room in the attic it's made for dwarves, and the rooms in the basement are suitable for voyeurs or deaf people only. Even the taxi driver as we left told us the hotel does not have a good reputation locally. I wish someone had put an honest review on here like this before I booked!!!

Review 55:The breakfast was poor, we didn't pay for it because all of the food was cold which we didn't eat. However this didn't effect our experience as we got breakfast in town.

Review 56:The hotel was in an excellent location, and was very modern. We were upgraded and had an excellent room.

Review 57:Single bad room so small that you cant turn in the room. Even no space for a closet. Outside hotel light pointed to hotel name coming straight into the room.

Review 58:Nice breakfast although expensive if you pay it as an extra.

Review 59:Rooms are small and lots of noise from corridors. But.........minor gripes

Review 60:Nice hotel, fabulous food. Wifi is fantastic.......fast and strong signal throughout.

Review 61:Not exactly a complaint but lack of parking was a problem. We must remember to reserve parking when we come next time. And yes, sound proofing would not go amiss why do people need to move around all noght

Review 62:We were made very welcome by every member of staff The room was clean, warm and you could open the window The breakfast had a good choice and was fresh and hot, especially on the busy Sunday morning. Staff apologised when we had to sit in bar

Review 63:Really hot in the whole hotel, also breakfast was awful. Got down at 9 and there was no food, when it did come out the bacon was like it had been run under a hot tap and the sausage was raw inside. Raised this with no apology just did I want one fully cooked and that the meat is 100% meat.. I replied it was not 100% cooked

Review 64:The room was tiny and right be the stairs so we could hear people as if they were in the room. I felt the receptionist was a little off when we arrived.

Review 65:The location was perfect and central.

Review 66:The room was absolutely tiny. The photos on the website are very misleading. We has no room for even a tiny suitcase without constantly tripping over it.

Review 67:The room and bathroom was spotlessly clean. The location was great, just a 5 minute walk from the top of the high street

Review 68:Room was not sound proof as you could hear everyone walking and chatting up and down the corridor. This was awful at 2am and 3am as it woke us up and then too noisy to get back to sleep.

Review 69:Staff very helpful

Review 70:Would have been good if breakfast had been included or had been a little cheaper, so went elsewhere but not a big problem.

Review 71:We got a special internet/last minute offer so that was great.

Review 72:The single room I got was extremely small. The wardrobe was half size. There was an exterior light from the hotel entrance shining at full power through the window.

Review 73:Price and location were ok.

Review 74:Could have done with more milk portions in room Room was small but your really only in there to sleep it had everything you need

Review 75:The room was clean and well presented hotel is in a great location for shops and bars staff were friendly and welcoming

Review 76:There was nowhere for us to park our cars. The footsteps from the room above were ridiculous. This awoke us in the morning. The rooms looked much more modern and exciting in the photos on the website.

Review 77:staff could be abit better mood! Location is calm but car or taxi is needed if with larger luggage.

Review 78:marvellous rooms and all needed things! Found a new "home" base in Guildford.

Review 79:Room 106 is a closet. The mattress is bumpy and the slopes to the left the cupboard is low and if you hang a jacket the bottom is on the floor.

Review 80:The staff and the food

Review 81:The price is outrageous. Guildford is very expensive for some reason and I did not see much to justify such expense. The Mandolay is getting away with what it can based on the competition but for a conference hotel with no gym or pool the rooms are certainly comfortable but wth little added to explain the cost. There is no fridge, mini-bar or safe and only standard packet instant coffee and kettle which frankly one can get in a standard chain hotel room.

Review 82:Central location and very close to the G Live conference facility

Review 83:They have a lot of basement rooms. Some without windows. Not all rooms have a desk and table at which to work .. Which is odd, given their claim to be a "conference venue". I asked to see four different rooms. The two in the basement both had a rather nasty, sewer type smell. The room I ended up in was OK, save for the sound of the people walking around upstairs.

Review 84:Helpful staff. Relatively clean. Breakfast was good.

Review 85:We stayed at The Mandolay last year, although the room was small our stay was fine and we we're able to use the car park at the rear. This time however our room was in the Coach House which has appalling sound separation, the people next door spent most of the night having an argument, we could hear pretty much every word. There was no parking available despite the car park being empty the first night, annoying having to be at the public car park by 8.00am to buy a ticket.

Review 86:Parking onsite was minimal and this was not detailed on the booking page. We requested parking but were told we should have pre booked. We had to park a 15 min walk away and bring all our bags back which wasn't ideal. We booked in the restaurant for 930 when the restaurant closed at 10. The whole way through the meal we felt rushed and were told three times that the kitchen is closing and had to order dessert as the starters were brought out. If the restaurant closed at 10 they should have allowed us to book at 930. This is not good service. The waitress also seemed new and made quite a few mistakes which is fine but I felt she should have been shadowing someone else. It was a shame as the food was exceptional and meal was ruined by being rushed and the poor service.

Review 87:The room was excellent, clean, spacious and had nearly everything we wanted. The only improvement I would make in the room would be to add a fridge. The hotel was centrally located, and the bar and restaurant were great. We booked in the restaurant and the gourd was exceptional.

Review 88:Room 50, outside the main hotel, awful soundproofing or should say lack of, upstairs over our heads, woke up to every creak and sound of occupants. Scaffolders next to building also noisy. Shame.

Review 89:Arrived at 3.30am, crashed out, not really observational, looked like the hotel could be very nice.

Review 90:No parking on site available even though they had 5 spaces they were reserved for guests! So. . What was I??

Review 91:Room was big and had 3 beds just for me. Was in a separate building than the main hotel.

Review 92:There are no hairdryers available.

Review 93:The food that I had for my tea was lovely and filling! They gave me the choice to eat in my room as well, as I was getting work done it helped me a lot. All of the staff were friendly, chatty and helpful. Bathroom was spotless and my room was spacious, clean and comfortable as well

Review 94:The friendliness of the staff and the location. We were given a very quiet room because we were travelling with our daughter who is 1. Every request was accommodated. All in all, a fantastic stay!

Review 95:The standard room we had was cosy, but the bathroom was small.just plain small.

Review 96:The 5 minute walk into town. No need for driving. The staff were very helpful. Secure parking at the rear of the property was reasonably priced.

Review 97:Initially parking seemed to be a problem as we were in and out of the hotel. However, the receptionist pointed us across the road to a car park which worked out brilliantly.

Review 98:Being near to Guildford The bed was extremely comfortable and the room was perfectly formed.

Review 99:Size of double room, price of breakfast and noisy through the night - sounded like boiler on the first night then noisy guests in other rooms the second

Review 100:Clean and comfy room

Review 101:Stairs

Review 102:Charming! Lovely very friendly and helpful staff. The only downside was the stairs I had to carry my luggage. Although the staff did offer so perhaps that is not a downside at all.

Review 103:The bar was very expensive as was breakfast. The floorboards above us were very creaky so I was aware of people moving about. The water tank kept refilling overnight so there was trickling water noises all night and by morning an overflow gushed water onto a roof top next to the window. I thought it was raining but when I looked outside there were bright blue skies!

Review 104:Very nice venue for a family party. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 105:Didn't expect the room to be so small. Booking.com showed bigger and more luxurious rooms.

Review 106:Receptionist was lovely. Location was close to the centre.

Review 107:Breakfast is a joke for the price, night time room service is 4 sandwiches. They were out of stock of 2 of the 4 sandwiches. Night staff were pretty rude. A lot of noise in the evening from a function

Review 108:Close to the town centre, day staff are friendly enough

Review 109:Carpet in the room - this is so old-fashioned and filthy. Walls are a bit thin- you hear too much from your neighbour. Quality of mattress could be better. Room had a bit stuffiness. Even though I had an upgrade and indeed this was appreciated I did not like the fact that I was upgraded to a handicapped room were the toilet has no lid.

Review 110:Friendlyness of staff - reaally so nice!!!! and complimentary upgrade was very muc appreciated (but now I am afraid how tiny a Standard room would look like....)

Review 111:very small and dingy room in the basement Not good value at £109 per night, room only. Woken by delivery van right outside the tiny basement window. Bathroom also very small and well used. Cant get breakfast on Sunday after 10am

Review 112:friendly efficient staff, comfortable bed

Review 113:No lifts and limited help from staff Limited parking, which I was't expecting and some incurred an extra charge on top of the room. Location was also on wrong side of Guildford for me - so got stuck in rush hour traffic morning and night - not sure how it would have faired for other locations.

Review 114:Nice accommodation

Review 115:Had to move 3 times in 5 days. Room remperature very hot and no air con. Housekeeping were allowed to move and pack personal items without permission.Wardrobe is ridiclous........theres a lot more......

Review 116:Free wifi and parking.

Review 117:The underneath of the toilet seat was not particularly clean, the soap and toiletries were not renewed daily. In fact, the last day there was no shampoo at all. This are very inexpensive items considering we were paying the same amount for the room each day.

Review 118:The location and friendly staff

Review 119:limited parking, I had to park across the road, which meant an early start the next day to ensure parking ticket. Also a bit noisy with do going on underneath us.

Review 120:Very comfy cosy room, really really clean fab bathroom

Review 121:Ambient noise at night in the corridors from other guests going to and from their rooms. The other guests were not noisy but there was little sound insulation in my room.

Review 122:Proper boutique hotel.

Review 123:Noise at midnight from the conference center. They were preparing the place for the next day. I just came from a 20 hours flight and couldn't sleep. I had to record in my phone because they didn't find where it came. The people in the front desk, specifically ladies are very rude. Not good their attitude.

Review 124:Ambient, cleanliness, and location

Review 125:The staff were unhelpful. It was shocking value for money, the room wasn't great, tiny bathroom, when I spend well over £100 I expect to have a nice room with good staff.

Review 126:The food was terribly under cooked and the service was terrible. The prices were extortionate for a 3 star hotel £24 for a bottle of house white. Also parking was very limited and the surrounding area is permit only. When we arrived I rang the hotel and explained we couldn't find a place to park, which they then offered for us to park in their carpark behind the hotel, but then proceeded to charge us £10 for the night.

Review 127:The hotel was very clean and when we arrived we had no cold water, which they fixed immediately.

Review 128:The free parking is on a 1st come bases , although there is alternative parking very near , but quite expensive. And the shower system wasn't as powerful as you'd expect .

Review 129:Very easy to find ,straight from the A3 to the town centre ,and the rooms are very clean and presentable . The beds are also very comfortable as well .

Review 130:The decoration of the suite was quite poor, the carpet quite old, no frigo bar , no complimentary bottle of water, uncomfortable shower in the bathtub. Very poor in term of security: the Employees at the reception did not say hello and did not even check who was coming in! I had the impression anybody could access this hotel without any problem.

Review 131:Room was too hot no air con. Opened windows but traffic was so noisy couldn't sleep. Asked for a late checkout but the maid walked into the room at 9 a.m. without any warning I was still in bed!!

Review 132:Like the location.

Review 133:The staff just don't smile and will not try to be helpful unless you really insist. It seems they confuse business travellers who don't ask too many questions with other travellers. They are more like automats and have lost the sense of personal and friendly assistance. This applies to all at the reception except just 1 or 2. There was no spa although it was mentioned everywhere (the booking included).

Review 134:The location and the hotel's atmosphere. The food at the restaurant.

Review 135:Our `executive` room was on the ground floor, really complicated way to get there. The parking was right in front of our window. People stayed outside talking and laughing till late night, it was really noisy. Even worse was the steam coming from the hotel`s hot water evaporator installation. You better not open the window as the steam enter directly into the room. This was the first 4-star hotel that we`ve stayed in that has no wardrobe, no closet, no jacket/coat hanger inside the `executive` room. No ironing facilities, too. The bathroom - very small and uncomfortable.

Review 136:Great location, near Guildford`s lovely center. Nice and helpful staff at the reception desk.

Review 137:Very little parking, we weren't warned about this. As this hotel caters mostly for events - weddings, parties, etc. best to get there early on a Saturday otherwise no parking. Don't get a room on the main/ground floor - not during the weekend, as the music from their events hall- for us it was a wedding- will be heard till the wee hours. Also, the bathroom on the ground floor had a horrid sewer smell. Probably because we were on the ground floor. That was very off-putting. We only stayed there one night, Saturday, since we were going to a concert that evening, so what it was for was fine but completely overpriced. The prices for other days is less. We paid an extra £50 for a Saturday night stay. Not sure if worth it. Why it's called a boutique hotel not sure as the amenities weren't quite there. Best thing was the location. Hotel staff ok.

Review 138:Good location - near city centre. Fluffy towels. Good wines, nice bar and seating outside is great when weather is good.

Review 139:Bathroom was a bit too small, check out time could be at least at 12h.

Review 140:We went to Mandolay for a wedding and found the room very comfortable even if the bathroom was a bit small. Bed was very confortable and the place really quiet.

The Fine Print
