Reviews for Best Western The Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa

Review 1:I didn't find a lock up safe in the room, although there might have been. I think all hotels should have a safe, which is big enough to store a laptop. Unfortunately a previous occupant of the room may have washed his golf shoes in the wash basin as there were several small chips in the porcelain, consistent with having been struck by spikes.

Review 2:It has everything you want in an hotel. Clean, nice staff. Lovely surroundings, plenty of parking and an indoor pool, which I did not have time to use.

Review 3:Nothing.

Review 4:It was a birthday weekend away. When we arrived at the hotel it was very nicely located and very presentable. I would like to try the cottages next time. The staff were friendly and very helpful with the check in. Our room was a good size, clean and tidy, with a greeting from 2 swans (towels) on the bed. The food in the onsite restaurant was fantastic, filling and priced very well! The location of the hotel was good too, as it was quiet but still close to 'things to do'. Overall we had a lovely stay here in Dartmouth and would definitely stay here again.

Review 5:Restaurant staff not so great, when we took a table we were told we will see if we have a table, despite the restaurant being completely empty.

Review 6:Generally all good, lovely place, great location and nice spa.

Review 7:Would have liked the pool to have opened earlier than 8:00am in the morning - especially as check-out time is 10:30

Review 8:Excellent location and facilities, loads of parking - VERY hilly!

Review 9:Not child friendly, kids not allowed in pool until 10am, checkout is 10am so kids cannot swim in morning of last day. Arrogant and condescending spa / pool staff. Wouldn't stay here again.

Review 10:Nothing special.

Review 11:Housekeeping let the experience down, had to ask for maid service on the second day and the following day the service was at 4 pm. No clean towels until late afternoon and no milk etc replenished.

Review 12:The venue was well located for Dartmouth, hotel staff helpful and good facilities.

Review 13:Friendliness of staff especially as they were working on Boxing day. Convenience of rooms to facilities. Tea and coffee and toiletry provisions. Good value for money

Review 14:Room decor a bit dated, no real view from room, nothing to do really at night although we did play cards given by bar staff.

Review 15:Room was nice, swimming pool etc were fab, restaurant food was stunning, staff were so friendly and helpful.

Review 16:Breakfast not the best I've had. Basic accommodation. Housekeeper left dirty bag in bathroom and didn't replace opened sugar packets from previous occupant.

Review 17:Lovely peaceful location. Very restful. Comfortable bed.

Review 18:Our room was fine, but if you were on the S side of the hotel you have no view. Fine temperature in winter but in summer the rooms would be very hot as the windows did not open far.

Review 19:Spa was excellent; views from our room over the golf course; breakfasts were very tasty with a good selection

Review 20:Always prefer to have a top sheet as I usually find the duvet too hot. This time I managed by shaking the duvet away from the cover and using a towell as a "blanket"

Review 21:The lovely position in the golf course, plus the spacious well appointed room and ensuite were very pleasurable. Easy access to food at the bistro/bar was also most convenient.

Review 22:No real bad experience but I thought the evening meal was poor for a sea location I didn't think the fish was very fresh or had any taste the batter was not cooked thru.

Review 23:The breakfast service was very good and the staff very friendly.

Review 24:My Wife and I thought it was a bit greedy having to pay an extra four pound for a pot of tea with our very nice English Breckfast.

Review 25:Outlook over golf course very nice.

Review 26:Some of the décor looks a little tired in places but overall very clean comfortable.

Review 27:Really friendly and helpful staff who helped to make our stay very enjoyable.

Review 28:Rooms showing signs of wear with shabby chairs & paint peeling away on bathroom ceiling. Heated towel rail too small for all the towels.

Review 29:Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice. Beautiful setting overlooking the golf course with comfortable rooms made our stay enjoyable. Loved the 'swan'towels on the bed!

Review 30:Water supply to bathroom contaminated with dirt/silt, understand due to boiler problems. Unable to use bath. Management aware.

Review 31:Facilities, food, and general room standards. Management response to water problem.

Review 32:Nothing at all it was great. We could not fault our stay in any way at all.The room was excellent we where in 213 and it was brilliant.

Review 33:We liked everything about our visit.100% good could not fault anything. We are hoping to return in March and looking forward to doing that.

Review 34:Access to rooms through bar and restaurant.

Review 35:Hotel is rural but within easy reach of Dartmouth and only a 20 minute drive from Salcombe. Pool, sauna etc were good but guess could get a little crowded at higher occupation rates.

Review 36:No mobile signal, lack of any view from room & lack of lounge area seating after meal. Didn't like extra charge of £9+ for breakfast!

Review 37:Spa & restaurant staff for evening meal. We had read an evening meal menu in our room which wasn't given to us as an option when we sat down. Staff knew what we meant & we were able to offer off the full evening menus.

Review 38:As a couple, we felt that groups (especially golfers) got preferential treatment. We appreciate it is a golf and country club, but we were told on a number of occasions that they were busy due to " larger parties ". A major let down was the fact that our room wasn't cleaned properly, only the bathroom. Dirty cups were left and the bed not made. Not impressed.

Review 39:Beautiful location near to amazing beaches and scenery as well as Dartmouth and Salcombe, which is why we chose this hotel. This hotel also had a pool which is always a great way to relax.

Review 40:The bedrooms were very dated. Breakfast buffet- runs until 10.30 but at 9.30 there was only one strawberry left on the fruit platter and one yoghurt left. It was not refilled. Croissants had to be ordered from staff rather than being readily available at the buffet. Hotel felt more like a golf club with the hotel business being a side operation.

Review 41:Lovely views over the golf course from the main restaurant.

Review 42:The bed was nice and big but it was two beds joined together so the join made it a bit uncomfortable when you rolled on it.

Review 43:Excellent food in the evening and breakfast. The restaurant staff were excellent, friendly, attentive made our stay special. The spa is fantastic, great to relax &unwind ,very clean facilities, nice comfy rooms.

Review 44:Dining room was a little draughty and cold Bedroom was a bit dark even with lights on and only an electric wall heater . would not like to stay in cold weather

Review 45:Staff for both breakfast and for the two evening meals were very friendly and helpful room good but hot tap was scolding

Review 46:We felt the lounge area seating was limited for relaxing after dinner. The sofas and chairs are tired and need replacing, the area was not very inviting to spend an evening.

Review 47:It is a nice quiet, relaxing location with easy access to Dartmouth, Brixham, Paignton and Torquay. The views are stunning.

Review 48:The only negative was the attention to cleanliness in the bar restaurant area. Maybe a bit picky but the cleaners need to look above their heads at lampshades etc. also the main reception area was a bit scruffy. Could do with new flooring!

Review 49:We looked the lovely quiet location and the cleanliness of the room.

Review 50:No flannels and no wrap provided. Would have liked a better view but bearing in mind what we paid it was fine. I thought the general amenities could have made better use of the views over the golf course, etc.

Review 51:The bedroom was excellent value for money

Review 52:The staff in the dining room at breakfast can be a bit 'pushy' by rushing you at mealtime especially if you are still at your table having your breakfast after 10 am, also taking your cooked breakfast order and putting it on your table even though you haven't finished your cereals etc - Not good judgement on taking notice and waiting for you to finish before putting a hot breakfast in front of you. - This is something that is easily improved and can make for a better dining experience!

Review 53:A very relaxing Hotel with great facilities and more so excellent 1st class food. Would definately strongly recommend staying at this Hotel, you won't be dissapointed!

Review 54:A group of mature adults in the restaurant having some sort of meal/party and we're making a huge amount of noise, myself and my group of friends couldn't have a co versa ruin due to the noise. If it had been a group of teenagers making that noise they would have been chucked out.

Review 55:Staff were really nice and friendly, couldn't do enough for you

Review 56:Cold in Dining room when having meals. Worse part - NO HANDLES ON BATH so had to get my husband to pull me out, AND I AM NOT DISABLED.

Review 57:STAFF so helpful Comfort of rooms and beds Meals

Review 58:No phone signal anywhere. Not hotel fault but it mattered. Couldn't contact bridegroom (brother) who's wedding we'd travelled for. Surly waitress at breakfast. Bordering rude.

Review 59:pretty grounds and comfortable bedrooms

Review 60:Breakfast awful and had to wait 45 minutes. Reception staff was insistent that I had not prepaid although I had the receipt and she also wanted to charge more than I had booked it for. Spa treatments ok but attitude of some staff terrible, and an hours massage lasted 45 minutes.

Review 61:Free parking

Review 62:Wifi not great but that is owing to geography rather than anything the hotel can do about it.

Review 63:2nd time we've stayed here, previously for a wedding. Staff work very hard to ensure you enjoy your stay.

Review 64:Confusion with payment of one of our bookings which meant I was charged again several days after leaving the hotel. Was however sorted out quite quickly.

Review 65:Pleasant hotel. Very comfortable beds. Lovely pool area, with adult only times. Good restaurant.

Review 66:THEY HAVE A FAULTY/POOR FIRE ALARM THAT WENT OFF TWICE DURING THE LATE EVENING/MORNING WHEN MAJORITY OF RESIDENTS WERE IN BED. THE STAFF WERE VERY POOR ON HANDLING..ORGANISING/CHECKING ETC. MORE PRACTICE NEEDED HERE, AND ATTENTION NEEDED TO ALARM, WHICH EMPLOYEES WERE AWARE OF IT PLAYING UP. THEY HAD NO CARD FACILITIES FOR PAYMENT IN RESTAURANT AND BAR, AGAIN DEALT WITH RATHER FLIPPANTLY AS THOUGH THE NORM.

Review 67:VERY GOOD ALL ROUND. SERVICE AND FOOD WORTHY OF COMMENDING.

Review 68:Meant to have a double bed instead 2 singles put together with an uncomfortable topper over the top. Wifi wasnt very strong. Overpriced food - best to order at the bar for better value at breakfast

Review 69:Spa and golf course were great!

Review 70:Unfriendly staff at breakfast, dirty plates left on table for nearly 15mins despite asking to have them removed . Wedding party making noise thought out the hotel until 3am

Review 71:Good location, good facilities

Review 72:The room looked a bit 'sad' and could have been made to look somewhat more inviting. Our stand-out towel had black dirty marks over a large area on it, and we felt that the remaining towels, although clean, hadn't been laundered properly as there was a stale smell coming from them.

Review 73:Very convenient for a stop-over having visited friends in Dartmouth.Lovely location and adequate facilities.

Review 74:Only downside to catch bus into Dartmouth or Totnes there was a 10 minute walk up a very steep hill I did ask if there was a courtesy bus to take people to the main road unfortunately there wasn't

Review 75:Excellent value for money. Friendly helpful staff. Ambiance of hotel

Review 76:One morning we went for breakfast. We were told to take a seat. Only to be told over 10mins later that there was a problem in the kitchen and breakfast would be taking a little longer. When we saw how many people were in front of us we knew we would not get our breakfast till late, So that day we did not get our breakfast we paid for, Also on the Friday night the fire alarm went off twice at 11pm, myself & my hubby went outside with other people were standing outside like lemons with no staff telling us that it was a false alarm & not to worry.

Review 77:The wonderful massage I had in the Spa. Very professional young lady called Stacey.

Review 78:Very rural so you have to drive to go out in the evening, as there is nothing else nearby this property to walk to. Not allowed to walk on the golf course, so if you aren't playing golf, then limited.

Review 79:Spa facilities were okay.

Review 80:Some of the building's structure looked a little 'tired' and in need of some maintenance; such as buttons hanging off the elevator console, ceiling tiles over the jacuzzi removed all week.

Review 81:Its location and facilities

Review 82:Had problems with men in next room on golf break coming back and talking until 2am about their golf scores 2nd night phoned security no answer so banged on their door it went quiet this is not acceptable and quiet signs should be on corridors or in rooms spoke to reception. They picked phone call up in morning just wanted to know if everything else was ok. Shame it was allowed to happen to spoil what was a lovely stay

Review 83:Lovely setting

Review 84:Food and presentation was excellent, room was comfortable and had all the facilities we expect. Location was in a perfect position for touring local area. Hotel was very clean in all areas.

Review 85:We had the misfortune of being automatically being booked into room 109 through booking.com,it smelt , was dark ,oppressive, and the boiler noise after 10 pm was so bad we asked to move , which was very inconvenient at 11 pm,the staff were very helpful and realised there was a problem with this room

Review 86:Fire alarm went off from 7.00am every 10 minutes. We left at 8.00am.No apologies from the staff. Room was too far from the wifi to get agood signal.

Review 87:Basic Hotel. Clean room. Decent enough value for money. Unfortunatelystay was ruined by the fire alarm.

Review 88:very tired decor & fittings in rooms & bathrooms , breakfast food very moderate. sadly I spotted a Cockroach near the Diningroom door on our last morning & yes it was . I've seen plenty in Australia to know what they look like.

Review 89:Quiet. problem free parking.Clean, crisp bed linen. Pretty country location.

Review 90:transportation link is poor unless if you driving then ok....taxis are expensive and the buses to next town is every two hours. If you drive I'd say hire a car in Totness for your stay.

Review 91:this place is proper...excellent view, hotel rooms are gorgeous....wouldn't ask for more...

Review 92:Location if you dont have a car. Taxis are quite expensive to Dartmouth/Totnes.

Review 93:Professional spa. Reception staff very helpful and friendly Large rooms and comfy beds.

Review 94:Nothing! We found the bedroom very warm but made use of the air conditioning provided. (Window only opened slightly)

Review 95:Really loved the Spa and found the 9 hole course challenging, but very enjoyable. Beautiful views of surrounding countryside. Staff all friendly, polite and helpful.

Review 96:Although our room was fine it was right next to the lift ( out of service )and the stairs so we had all the noise of people going back to their rooms during the night .

Review 97:spacious room size, great views (only if overlooking golf course )

Review 98:Access to bedrooms was through bar/restaurant. Noisy golfers at breakfast time.

Review 99:Restaurant overlooking golf course serving good food at night and for breakfast.

Review 100:The hotel was very difficult to find, but that may be google maps fault! We were directed to come through the tradesmen's entrance (no pun intended!) The wifi was pretty slow and didn't work in the bar.

Review 101:Beautiful location in huge grounds and not far from Dartmouth. Small, but nice spa facilities and swimming pool. Restaurant and other staff were very helpful and genial, all the more appreciated as we were travelling with our 4 month old baby.

Review 102:Public rooms very 'tired' & hotel generally needs updating in terms of furniture, fittings & decoration. Golf course in superb condition & a great challenge;pity the hotel does not match up.

Review 103:As a positive remark, I think it would be helpful to accommodate couples and large groups of golfers separately in the dining areas. Without wishing to spoil anyone's enjoyment, it was difficult to hold a conversation with the inevitable noise level of parties of 14/16 in the immediate area. That said, the service was first class

Review 104:What was not to like. The restaurant team were a credit to the hotel with nothing being too much trouble. An excellent value short break. We would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to anyone thinking of booking a break.

Review 105:Service at breakfast was poor, took a long time to find out what you required. It was very nice when it came but after a 45 minute wait tea and coffee getting cold. Service should be a lot better.

Review 106:Surroundings

Review 107:Upholstery and decor in certain areas looking very tired and in need of refurbishment. We also were given our key at 3pm but our room was not ready until way after that and still not finished leaving us to clean stains on dressing table and bathroom floor!!

Review 108:Friendliness and efficiency of all staff in restaurant, bar and reception.

Review 109:The stroganoff in the restaurant was incorrectly described as Apple and celery - upon arrival it was 90% mushroom. Lucky that I like mushrooms! The puddings were disappointing.

Review 110:The huge bed was lovely, as we're the complimentary toiletries.

Review 111:Having to wait At reception while 3 staff dealt with one customer.

Review 112:Lovely rooms and spa facilities. Dinner/breakfast staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 113:bit noisy as the walls are thin and staff woke me at 6.30 am chatting below my bedroom window

Review 114:the bed was awesome and we had a bay window with a view out onto the countryside which was lovely.

Review 115:Had a back room, so no view but room spacious, clean and the bed extremely comfortable.

Review 116:Very friendly, staff lovely. Just wish it has been the summer so we could have appreciated the grounds more. Will definately be back.

Review 117:Slightly difficult to find, could do with some more signage in Totnes when approaching from Plymouth, otherwise everything was good

Review 118:Everything at this hotel was good and very good value for money. I would stay here again, the beds in particular were outstanding.

Review 119:Could become quite busy so not sure what this would be like in terms of the space available in the bar, etc and "noise" levels. We were there when it was quiet.

Review 120:Quite a number of aspects, for example, the views, the food was very reasonably priced and good quality. There seems to be a range of pricing deals available. The service and hospitality was excellent from all staff. Ideal setting for a getaway break

Review 121:See above

Review 122:The entrance to bedrooms is my only negative comment, as you pass through the bar/ bistro /restaurant in the evenings and the same areas where breakfast is served in the mornings. Overall a very professional, friendly and welcoming hotel with good facilities.

Review 123:Beautiful location. Food was excellent, room clean and comfortable, piping hot water in bath/shower, lovely pool and golf course. Staff very efficient and friendly. Great price for B&B, golf and use of facilities. Would definitely stay again.

Review 124:We would have preferred a more traditional hotel and not a golf club with a hotel attached because we felt it lacked atmosphere so not sure we would return.Thought this should have been made clear in the information

Review 125:Larger swimming pool needed. Larger and seperate relaxing area, not in the bar. More pool tables and maybe table tennis. To have the restaurant in a differet area so that you dont have to work through it to get to your room from the spa .

Review 126:Spa treatments were excellent. The views. Staff were helpfull and accomodating. Room was big and bed was comfortable. Bed room Cleaned every day. Breakfast food was good .

Review 127:Slightly uncomfortable toilet because it was too close to the bathroom wall. Access to our room was through the bar and restaurant which could be awkward at busy times.

Review 128:Room was clean and had view of golf course. Good choice for breakfast. Easy to get into Dartmouth.

Review 129:Mobile phone reception is very poor. Some aspects of the premises were a bit scruffy.

Review 130:Good room, nice pool and spa facilities, Bar good , restaurant good for evening meal although menu a bit limited. Food quality very good. Breakfast good. We would stay there again.

Review 131:Golfers verging on rude, obviously do not want guests at their club . No attempt to open doors when arrived soaking wet and laden with luggage. Another virtually slammed door in my face. Made to feel very unwelcome

Review 132:Beds extremely comfortable. Dinner good choices and good value for money. Large comfortable rooms.

Review 133:The friendliness of the staff, especially the bistro staff at breakfast, who went above and beyond the call of duty to accommodate our tastes, the main one being Claire Tozer, plus the two young girls, the names which escape me. I think it was Mia and her partner. Breakfast excellent.

Review 134:Warm welcome on arrival, very clean comfortable room, lovely view over the course, good food and friendly bar, great value for money - The Dartmouth 9 hole course is challenging with fabulous scenery. We would not hesitate to recommend the DGCC, we booked for a 3 night break and regretted not booking a longer stay. We will definitely return soon.

Review 135:the bedroom had no air conditioning it was dark as it only had a small window and we could not get cool air into the room as the window would not open enough so this made the room very stuffy and too hot to sleep

Review 136:the staff at breakfast they are very friendly

Review 137:the evening menu dissapointed thought in dartmouth there would be more fish i had the only fish main course fish good but served with salad its just does not go

Review 138:the leisure centre the rooms and location

Review 139:Way too expensive. The rooms were clean but basic, the food was not al a carte but the prices suggested better quality. The staff were all very friendly but many young students who were incredibly shy and struggled to talk. At breakfast only one person was able to take the food order, one taking drinks and another delivering food, they didn't appear to be able to mix and match activities and skills. Only worth visiting if you get a deal on playing golf with accommodation.

Review 140:The location to areas of interest was very good. The golf course is clearly great and the set up of the hotel is very much golf led.

Review 141:Sound does travel quite easily between rooms.

Review 142:This is a great base from which to explore Dartmouth and the surrounding area. The rooms very good with huge and comfortable beds. The Spa, gym and pool are terrific. The dining room has great views. The food was much better than expected - a real bonus. The staff were uniformly superb - they made a real effort. In terms of value for money it would be hard to beat. If you play golf (which we did not) you would be even more pleased with your choice.

The Fine Print

Please note that the Lodges do not have WiFi, it is only in the hotel room and bar. Please note mobile phone signal can be intermittent at the hotel and in the grounds.
