Reviews for The Imperial Hotel
Review 1:The stairs are quite steep, no good if you are injured or out of shape.
Review 2:Friendly and considerate staff, they saw I was heading out for dinner and lent me an umbrella.
Review 3:The location is in a very shady area and I was worried about my car getting broken into. The hotel smells because the carpets are very, very old and dirty.
Review 4:the actual room was ok and clean.
Review 5:Hosts looked out for us arriving to show us to the car park & very hospitable. When 5 of us arrived back from a days mountain biking covered in mud they didn't bat an eye! Gave us bags and newspaper for our clothes & to dry shoes out. Bar had good Beer! Great for Bike Park Wales
Review 6:The parking was sort of awkward, the turning was sharp but was very secure once parked up for the night.
Review 7:The owners were lovely and very welcoming, many thanks. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners and made us feel very welcome.
Review 8:There is alot of refurbishment to that area of the town at the moment. But that is more about the town, rather than the hotel!
Review 9:Great location, near centre if town. Great Breakfast, a warm welcome & great service.
Review 10:The landlord and his wife were welcoming, friendly and very helpful with our travel plans. They made a great cooked breakfast for a small charge which was much needed after the rugby the night before..
Review 11:Very welcoming staff. We needed to check in outside of normal times and this was no problem. Lovely room, clean and good facilities. Great value for money!
Review 12:Very clean and comfortable beds, excellent facilities in the room.Breakfast was superb plenty to eat ,nice selection well cooked.Would stay there again if in that area.Nice bar and great cider.
Review 13:Accessing the hotel wasn't that easy on acount of the one way system.. and some of the streets round the back aren't the most inviting. That said all was good when we got there and there is a car park where we were able to safely leave our car.
Review 14:We received a very warm welcome. The hotel was very clean and the rooms very comfortable. Excellent value for money. The bar downstairs is very relaxed and super friendly.
Review 15:Nothing to dislike
Review 16:Two of the nicest most helpful people we have ever met. Went out of their way to help us. Had a fantastic weekend and will definitely go back.
Review 17:Nothing bad, it was very enjoyable stay
Review 18:Everything met expectations. Very charming and caring hostess. The breakfast was cooked sharply by the agreed time which was impressive.
Review 19:Carpark a wee bit awkward for larger cars Wifi limited to the lounge due to the fabric of the building (they are in the process of sorting this out)
Review 20:Very friendly husband and wife team Hotel old fashioned - this is a GOOD thing Location good for Bike Park I'd happily stay again
Review 21:Initially struggled to find hotel as new signage was in process of being upgraded.
Review 22:The room wss very clean and comfortable. The bar was welcoming. The breakfast was just right.
Review 23:The town isn't particularly a holiday destination in itself and was a little rough around the edges, however we were perfectly positioned for the Beacons.
Review 24:We were welcome by a personable and friendly French Welshman who ran bar very well and a German Welshwoman that made a great breakfast and also made us feel very welcome and at home. The room was very comfortable and lovely to see such attention to detail.
Review 25:Get the correct postcode from the owners if using GPS, otherwise you end up in the back streets.
Review 26:Very friendly and helpful staff, good breakfast, secure parking. Bike friendly, good selection of beers.
Review 27:The stairs were steep and I struggled to negotiate them with having a bad knee and hip. I will try for accommodation on a lower floor next time I visit.
Review 28:The hotel owners were most helpful and friendly. It was a handy location for the town centre and shops.
Review 29:no windows in rooms to see views, breakfast not included in price, problems with organization-items missing, no bath, no 24 hrs reception, large heater close to one bed and the other far away -so one person get extremely hot - while other normal- beds ok but not very comfortable. if not that expensive than maybe ok
Review 30:hot chocolate
Review 31:Stairs like the North Face of the Eiger!
Review 32:very friendly helpful owners good pub downstairs early breakfast if required cheap as chips secure parking good Indian restaurant less than 2 minutes away
Review 33:Don't be put off by the outside which did not do justice to the inside, stairs to bedrooms a bit too steep.
Review 34:Clean and comfortable, the owners could not do enough for us and made us extremely welcome.
Review 35:Stairs to rooms are a bit of a challenge. Two tall flights, quite narrow and with steep shallow risers. Not recommended for anyone with physical challenges. Staircase shown in photos is to ladies loo, not to accommodation.
Review 36:Enjoyed a drink in the pub bar with friendly locals and a nice dinner at a local "Indian fusion" restaurant. Room was spacious, plenty of power points and WiFi was good.
Review 37:I enjoy the warm and friendly feeling while at the Imperial. The bar is relaxing, beds comfortable, linen clean and the breakfast on offer is consistently good.
Review 38:This property is very very tired and has not been renovated for quite some time. It was lie going back to another era. Although clean it is is serious need of attention and modernization . Half the sign outside was missing and it looks very shabby. It was fine for the purpose but I was a little disappointed. Nice staff, sad place.
Review 39:The staff very helpful and informative
Review 40:I had no cause for complaint.
Review 41:Really nice people who provided me with a comfortable stay. Ample parking with local restaurants and take-aways near by.
Review 42:my experience was excellent
Review 43:this was a surprise as I am used to staying in city centres with different amenities and expectations. This was a great change to my usual working experiences - the attention to detail was excellent, there was help with parking, bags ettc which you don't always get in a 4 star hotel -so even though I hadn't been to this area before- found the experience and hotel more than worthy of the small prices they charge
Review 44:No WIFI in rooms
Review 45:Owners were fantastic, very clean and a good location. The property is a little dated but it has everything you need and is well presented.
Review 46:Plumbing in my room was a bit poor (i.e. not enough power and heat for the shower). If you are physically challenged, the steep stairs might be a problem
Review 47:The hosts are really nice and kind. Rooms are huge, spottless clean and the bed is super confy. Brekfast is cooked to order and served in a very bright room. OBS: Put CF47 8UB in the Sat Nav instead of the one you find on Booking to get there. If the owner didn 't kindly tell me do do so, I would be still driving in circkes
Review 48:Great over night stay in a nice room with good shower and there is also darts down stairs in a room opposite the bar. Staff were very helpful and there is secure parking.
Review 49:Though the decor is a bit old-fashioned, the Imperial is a very comfortable and friendly place to stay. The location will be considerably improved once the makeover of Merthyr reaches the top of the High Street. I would have no hesitation in returning.
Review 50:Help with bags, welcoming, easy to find, homely room, with all I needed. Breakfast - as much choice as needed - really well cooked, hot and tasty, healthy options available. A brilliant pub B & B experience.
Review 51:The one way system is very tricky!
Review 52:In a part of the town that is currently being restored, this hotel is a great find! This interesting historic building has been restored and rebuilt by a people who obviously have a great passion for what they do. If you're into local history, ask about the building. A warm, cosy and well decorated on suite room, a bar to match (with a selection of cask and draght beers) and a very warm reception. Much recommended!
Review 53:The couple who owns this hotel are so so so nice!!! I really enjoyed talking with them, and they did help us a lot. The room is so lovely and attractive!
Review 54:Nothing.
Review 55:Great location nice short walk into town friendly people Gave us good information about local area.Warm clean spacious room everything you need in there had a very pleasant stay.
Review 56:Merthyr Tidfell is a bit of a dump - but when you look behind the grottiness, really a very interesting place. The long steep stairs to the room is nothing for people with walking problems!
Review 57:The proprietors (couple) were very friendly, hearty and accommodating. If you ignore the outside (the street), the place is really very nice. The room we had was cosy and very unusual with a lot of care taken in details. The proprietors have research a lot of interesting history of the building. We enjoyed the stay. Breakfast (at extra cost) was excellent.
Review 58:- staircase quiet steep (but the landlord was very kind to help with the bag, so not really a problem)
Review 59:- very friendly and accommodating landlady and landlord - breakfast (Marlies well remembered from my last visit that i was vegan; did not have to mention it again) - nice clean and cosy room (single - ensuite) - not far from the city centre and the station, so i did not have a long way to the train station - free, good Wifi (yet only downstairs available)
Review 60:Pity about the first impression - outside pretty shabby - very misleading as we had a memorable stay. No views from the bedroom.
Review 61:Warm welcome, good breakfast and cosy room.
Review 62:the owners are a fantastic couplewho really make you feel at home. The breakfast is great and customizeable! and the bar is warm and friendly and a good place to mix with the local, loyal clientel.
Review 63:minor niggle only, that there's no lift : but it's an old building so that's understandable.
Review 64:Clean, spotless white sheets and real blankets - effective shower, help with bag, ..... a repeat visit because I knew it would be like that!
Review 65:This is the first time that we have stayed in Mertyr Tydfil. This hotel and pub is reminder of the more traditional type hotels that we used to stay many years ago. However this is a superbly well kept place, the rooms being spotless and the paintwork in top condition. Despite our room facing the high street there was hardly any noise at night even with the window open despite the town being very busy just down the street. The bar is a very friendly welcoming place away from the other night spots. Breakfast was superb. The landlady very friendly and really passionate about the hotel and pub. Will definitely stay again when next back in the area.
Review 66:The only draw back to this Hotel is the steep staircase, but I new that before I booked.
Review 67:Could this be the best kept secret of all time? Not anymore. From the moment you arrive at the Imperial Hotel in Merthyr Tydfil you are made to feel welcome. A warm hello from the owners who care that you are staying with them. Somehow from that moment you know they will do everything they can to make your stay with them as memorable as possible and they do just that. The Hotel is within easy walking distance of both shops and restaurants. The Indian restaurant just up the road is well recommended. The Hotel is both clean and tidy and well kept. Your room is of a high standard with all the usual amenities, bathroom, TV and Tea and coffee making equipment and a bed which is the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The full English or should I say Welsh breakfast is a must, especially if like me you are a cyclist. It sets you up for the day. The Hotel Imperial also has the added attraction of a bar where a chat and a drink with the locals is a must. Will I be back? Most certainly. Thank you Jose and Marlies and the friends I met for some wonderful memories.
Review 68:Nothing it was all good .
Review 69:Owners where lovely and couldn't do enough to help us , secure bike storage made our 3 day Welsh tour stress free , rooms are super clean the beds are fresh and soft . The bar down stairs is never to loud and can't be heard from your room so no worries there, locals are all friendly as well and atmosphere is warm in the bar. Breakfast was spot on and all options of cooking style are on offer so that even the most picky of us could still be satisfied when eating . Overall this is a fantastic hotel and a must for anyone looking to ride at BPW and the local area .
Review 70:The toilet and shower in the room are only seperated by a partition, which doesn't reach the ceiling. But a minor issue compared with all the positives.
Review 71:We were two cyclists going to the area to enjoy the Brecons. Very friendly owners, nothing too much trouble and secure car park and bike storage were offered. The Hotel has been refurbished and is clean and tidy, although rooms and stairs are a little small, but for the price, excellent value. The Hotel is the older area, which is undergoing redevelopment, but only a 2 minute walk into town. The local pubs leave a lot to be desired, so it was a very pleasant surprise to find the Hotel bar was quite busy with friendly locals and reasonable priced beer. The owners are clearly working hard to establish the business and for the price, I would have no hesitation to recommend.
Review 72:The absence of a lift... but it's an old building, I knew about it, and I'm really glad I didn't let this put me off.
Review 73:The welcome, the free and very secure parking, of which there isn't much in town, and the breakfast. Can't fault the room or the en-suite either. Lovely, clean and comfy. This is the place for me to stay in Merthyr.
Review 74:- steep staircase (the owner informed us that they are not allowed to put an elevator in)
Review 75:Very friendly owner (who happens to be a German, as we found out upon our arrival); very accommodating (as to our wishes for breakfast / diet requirements); spacious room; cozy; wireless LAN (though only accessible on the ground floor); slept very well
Review 76:The location. The outside of the building gave the impression the hotel was run down.
Review 77:The bed was extremely comnfortable and the owner was very welcoming.
Review 78:We had to climb up 2 long stairs and down a hall to get to our room. The double room had beds in 2 different corners. No window - only a skylight, and strange lighting system for bath and W/C. Town had very little to offer of restaurants - Indian, Chinese and fish and chips.
Review 79:The hosts were very friendly. Room was clean. Host carried our bags up the long stairs, and helped park the car in the off-street parking area. Breakfast good. Town working on cleaning up,
Review 80:Can't think of any negatives. I would happily stay every time in the area
Review 81:Locals and Owners very friendly, clean, comfortable and lots of character, close to centre and a very pleasant change from the usual clinical lodges and inns
Review 82:Very friendly staff nothing was too much trouble. Excellent breakfast and great location for us Bike Park Wales down the road. Comfy and clean room with tea &coffee facilities. Great stay. Thanks
Review 83:As a group of 3 young women staying here it wasn't for us. The staff were very nice but constantly wanted to know wat time we'd be home nite time and day time. Felt like I was staying with my parents. It's more for the older people not young woman looking for a fun weekend . And the 2flight of stairs r dangerous.
Review 84:Staff were friendly
Review 85:car park can be trying
Review 86:Easy to come in and out no hassle Cost was superb room was clean and tidy (347) Food good on arrival our wheel chair broke hotel gave me a number delivered in 10 minutes In all we loved our stay at a super Victorian slightly tired hotel
Review 87:Two flight of narrow stairs to all rooms. Parking difficult to get in to. WiFi not offered.
Review 88:She served a very nice breakfast and very knowledgeable of the town. The room was fine and the beds were a little soft but okay. The Pires were very nice, helpful, and updating along the way.
