Reviews for The Old Well Inn

Review 1:Hidden gem, in beautiful town. Very friendly staff who will go out of there way to ensure you enjoy stay. Nice wee bar with good beer garden and locals very helpful in providing good spots around the area for eating and seeing, nice breakfast in the morning

Review 2:We stayed on a Monday night when there was no food available. They did recommend somewhere else but it would have been nicer just to stay in.

Review 3:Comfortable room. Nice olde worlde atmosphere.

Review 4:The warmth of the welcome, both from the friendly local staff, and also from the 'regulars' . Each and every one greeted us ( and everyone else ) as they entered the room and made us feel welcome. The food was fantastic too!

Review 5:Our bedroom was really tired, shower base poor, tv not working , and kettle looked like it had melted, bedside lampshades scorched.

Review 6:Food was good, staff were friendly The breakfast area and food were really good, Opposite of our bedroom

Review 7:Bit old fashioned Nearly got a parking ticket on Saturday morning after 09.00. Perhaps the parking possibilities should have been better explained!

Review 8:Excellent location

Review 9:There is no private parking and you'll need to be lucky to park immediately outside the hotel, so some could find it problematic hauling luggage back and forth.

Review 10:Well situated in the heart of Barnard Castle. Our room on the second floor was quiet and spacious, and the staff friendly and welcoming.

Review 11:State of room tired dirty in places Kettle Shower base Window behind curtain Lamp shades All things with bit of effort could be sorted

Review 12:Good position Comfy bed Clean bed lining

Review 13:The relatives we were travelling with accidentally locked themselves out of their room at night and there were no staff around to let them in so they ended up in our room until just before breakfast the following morning.

Review 14:The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was excellent.

Review 15:The location is excellent and we were lucky to get free parking right outside the hotel. The room was of a good size and spotlessly clean. As we were allowed to bring our dog, the hotel fitted the bill perfectly.

Review 16:it's a very old building, a big gap in between the door and a frame, windows are making a noise when you walk across the room, apparently electricity is often off in rooms (then- no warm shower)

Review 17:the cover on the bed was really warm

Review 18:There is no meal on the Mondays this was not explained on the booking. The chef was apparently not well so there was no meals available any other day.

Review 19:Room good, breakfast very good, location good

Review 20:Wifi needs sorting.

Review 21:Loved the friendly welcome. Felt relaxed immediately. Breakfast was plenty and hot. Had full English and there wasn't a spot of oil on our plates when bought to our table. The Inn is quirky with loads of character and staff are fab and always available.

Review 22:The room could do with some serious refurbishment. Sleeping with the window open was not possible in the early morning, when traffic set in. When you switch on the lamp in the bathroom, you also get the rather noisy ventilation, which doesn't turn itself off for ages. WiFi only works at the bar downstairs, which seems to be rather popular with the locals.

Review 23:Almost everything is so quaint, you just have to like it in a way. We had booked a room, but got a suite with two rooms and a spacious bathroom. It is very centrally located.

Review 24:Appreciate its an old building but decor was tired.bath lip high and difficult to get in or out shower pathetic.

Review 25:Friendly staff especially the young girls serving breakfast

Review 26:Very noisy could hear people in next room talking all night kept us awake untill 4.30. Could not wait to go home.

Review 27:Bed was comfy. Quilt was divine. Hostess staff were very friendly and helpful more than i can say about staff behind bar.

Review 28:Comfortable, pleasant room and warm welcome. We stayed in the room at the back of the pub (3)(by choice) and found it to be quiet and peaceful for a good night's rest

Review 29:Power in the shower not very good and no bracket on the wall so had to hold shower head

Review 30:Very old but very quirky. Loved the 4 poster bed. Rooms massive Prices for drinks and food very reasonable. All staff very friendly. Beautiful beer garden

Review 31:Has the feel of a student shared house. Furniture and fittings very dated, shabby carpet, bumpy lino, bathroom door didnt close fully, outside door to garden could be broken into with a push, torn net curtains, stained and bumpy wallpaper, rusty radiator, old type multiplug in use next to tv. Outside view of derelict looking building with broken glass and overgrown garden.

Review 32:Clean bedding and towels, comfortable bed

Review 33:Loved the big fourpost bed even though it was uncomfortable

Review 34:The place was very clean and the staff were very friendly and could not have been more helpfull.

Review 35:Parking outside hotel difficult some days, but used long stay carpark nearby-disabled parking overnight, £1.50. Bargain

Review 36:Very warm welcome and assistance with luggage (husband disabled.) Lovely breakfast, any combo of typical cooked breakfast, cerials, fresh fruit, toast an tea.

Review 37:Breakfast was ok - nothing to get too excited about. The coffee seemed like instant even though it was served in a cafetiere. WiFi also didn't reach as far as the room.

Review 38:The room certainly had the wow factor for us, with a huge bed, wood panelling and unusual pieces of furniture. We also had two large windows looking over the front street which was nice! Probably the best room we've stayed in (on a limited budget).

Review 39:We didn't like leaving!

Review 40:Such a friendly place to stay! Everything from our arrival to departure was a pleasure. Our room was spotless (despite being one of their 'dog friendly' rooms). En-Suite Bathroom was spotless. Was great to have our front door that took us and our dog straight out onto the quaint streets of Barnard Castle. Everything we needed for a comfortable stay was in our room. The Bar, serving real ales was superb and the atmosphere friendly and welcoming. Good breakfast as well.... We are going again!!!!!

Review 41:Needs a bit of an update, toilet seat broken and bed uncomfortable, no parking

Review 42:Vegi sausages available for breakfast, wasn't too noisy even though we were above a public house. Walking distance from town and beautiful walk along the river

Review 43:Needs a shower curtain around bath. Showering impossible without having water on the floor.

Review 44:The food was down to earth good food and reasonably priced

Review 45:Disgusting smelly ensuite. Whole place needs a refurb. Badly in need of total upgrade. worn chairs in bars, poor decoration & terrible ensuite

Review 46:Good size room

Review 47:The heating was not on so the room was a bit chilly but when it did come on it was comfortable, the TV digibox had no signal so was unusable.

Review 48:The staff were very pleasant and the full English breakfast was good. Although some previous reviews were negative of the furnishings and 'cleanliness' we think it was very clean, but the furnishings were a little tired, the 4 poster bed in room 7 had pieces missing, 1 part was actually in a drawer, when it would be easy to glue back into place.

Review 49:Nothing

Review 50:The Old Well, in the centre of this historic market town, is a popular pub serving an excellent range of real ale. The landlord and all staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 51:The room was large but very shabby - I doubt that any investment has been made in the hotel for many years. The pillows were hard, compressed slabs (just the one per bed but there was a single and double bed in the room). I dread to think how many night time dribbles had created the consistency. The carpet was grubby. The heating was ineffective, not helped by the time clock which did not activate the radiator until after I had risen and got dressed. The bathroom had bath and hand shower attachment but could only be used as a shower by kneeling in the bath - the ceiling was too low to allow me to stand upright (I'm 6ft 1 inch, tallish but not huge). Car parking is pot luck on one side of the street. I was lucky: there was one vacant space when I arrived. Breakfast is served from 0730: mine arrived at 0740 - no good for the business traveller with an 0800 start to the day. I did not enjoy my stay and, although booked in for two nights, I left after the first night. £75 a night is too much - £50 and take the hit or spend more and go elsewhere.

Review 52:The hotel is easily walkable to the town centre

Review 53:The restaurant was closed, there was a live band on that was easily heard from our room as were people talking outside while smoking, the seating in the lounge wasn't the most comfortable and the bed was 2 singles zipped together, which I'm afraid is never any good

Review 54:The room was huge and well furnished and the breakfast was lovely

Review 55:Eating area just an extension to what is a rustic bar area - don't expect a pleasant dining room experience. Menu is locally themed but food not great. Public areas need an update. Would be reasonable value at £45-50 per room - pretty poor at £75.

Review 56:Good location, comfy bed. Room layouts worked well for us; Mum struggles with stairs and we were all on ground floor in adjacent rooms. Breakfast was good. Staff all very nice. Tim Taylor Landlord top notch!

Review 57:No wifi

Review 58:Even though our double room was unavailable due to a burst water pipe we were offered a twin room which far exceeded our expectations of size or quality of what we expected

Review 59:Evening meal menu has changed since our last visit. Can only assume due to too much competition up town?

Review 60:Yet again a warm welcome and room we knew [1 or 2 ] overlooks the street.Yes the bathroom is noisy n creaks n such but remember this is an old building with modern comforts added not premier inn.Looking forward to our next visit.. Thankyou Pete and Staff

Review 61:overall the inn was a little tired looking the fruit bowl at breakfast was very disappointing.

Review 62:the staff were excellent, my room was good value for money.

Review 96:A little noisey as over bar at front but would still stay again.

Review 97:Massive bed, good location, nice staff

Review 98:Although on a main road the bedroom was quiet and cosy very unusually furnished. Great homemade soup, piping hot, and a good selection of beers.

Review 99:Not as quiet as Premier Inns after 10 because the rooms are above the pub. Not a problem for us but could be for others.
