Churchwood Valley descritpion

Churchwood Valley in Wembury enjoys a naturally beautiful location on the south Devon coast. The park’s well-equipped wooden chalets lie in 75 acres of woodlands and fields, and benefit from on-site services including a launderette and a grocery store.
Comfortable bedrooms have twin beds, with the 6-person chalet also including 2 sofa beds. All have bathrooms with showers, and the 2-bedroom chalets also have baths.
Each Churchwood Valley chalet has its own private patio area with outdoor seating and table, as well as a spacious living area with views across the park. It offers a well-equipped kitchen for self-catering guests to cook in.
The park’s location is right by the coast path which leads to the River Yealm, where you can take a ferry to Newton Ferrers or Noss Mayo, where there are excellent pubs. In the other direction, walk to Mountbatten and ride the water-taxi to Plymouth, around 6 miles away.

Reviews for Churchwood Valley

Review 1:No mobile phone signal in the cabin, but we didn't mind as were on a mini break!

Review 2:We were concerned about how cold it might be in the cabin as our stay was 11-14th December, but we need not have worried as it was definitely 'toasty'! Great size for 4 adults and my little 19 month grandson - all that was needed was provided for us - even room for a travel cot in the double bedroom - very happy.

Review 3:Uncomfortable bed. Lack of mobile signal would not normally have been a problem but on this occasion was a bit trying. This was only because of meeting up times and not a criticism of Churchwood Valley.

Review 4:Nice location, friendly staff.

Review 5:I knew beforehand that there would be no phone signal but the payphone onsite did not work properly. it could only call 999 or page the owner.

Review 6:There were lots of cabins but they are all hidden in the hills so it seems like you are all alone in your cabin.

Review 7:No bad experience, however some trivial points to improve:- clock radio did not work, although power to the item. Potato peeler would not cut butter. Bedroom cold tap vibration when on low wakes the dead. Minimalistic crockery. On the whole VG.

Review 8:Location and view. Beds clean and comfortable. Heating VG.

Review 9:just the lights in the bedroom lamps flickered and went off. it was fine though

Review 10:self catering, in the woods but close enough to the sea and transport into town

Review 11:A wonderfully quiet and peaceful place. Disturbed only by bird song and nightly owls this is a place to get away from it all. Lovely coastal walks from the cabin.

Review 12:I think that there should be better telephone facilities as there is no mobile signal. Also the info could tell guests how expensive it is to park at Wembury Beach how far it is from Church Wood.

Review 13:The location

Review 14:The camp is in a beautiful setting and is very peaceful and quiet. However you do need a car to get around, but there is so much to do and see within a 20 mile radius of the camp.

Review 15:There is no mobile/wifi reception, you needed to get some way out of Churchwood Valley before you got any reception. I guess that's the price you pay staying in such beautiful natural surroundings, so we didn't mind too much, it was just a nuisance when trying to arrange to meet up with my daughter who lives in Plymouth.

Review 16:Fantastic location 5 min walk from Wembury Beach, a fantastic base to set off for many beautiful coastal walks. Cabin was basic but clean and comfortable. Loved being in the middle of woodland and feeding the birds on the bird feeder on decked patio area.

Review 17:Road access is a little challenging. Shower unit in chalet fine if you are thin. WiFi service not that great.

Review 18:Quite, tranquil situation, with adequate facilities.

Review 19:It was very isolated which wasn't really mention properly before hand. Had to pay for Internet in the cabin but was free by the office which was only open till 7p.m... no one to welcome us on Sunday or any communication of anyone on Monday.

Review 20:The wild life

Review 21:Beautiful location, No Wifi, No cell phone signals. Able to spend complete time with family. Very comfortable, warm and private cabin. Scenic location. Very nice beach.

Review 22:No telephone signal with mobile phone, wifi not working, shop only a few hours open per day.

Review 23:Very green park, in the middle of nature. Lot's of privacy. Nice people, who are helpfull.

Review 24:A bit poor cleaning in obeof the bedrooms we found a someones sock and a lot of dust and a bit dirty. Bed linen looked like they haven't been changed

Review 25:Nice quite area with good landscape

Review 26:Nothing we didn't like but travellers need to ensure a good handbrake and clutch for all the steep and windy country hills.

Review 27:Staff very friendly and helpful. Accomodation in beautiful, peaceful setting with wildlife abundant. Walking distance to Wembury beach.

Review 28:Could be tricky with emergencies as no phone signals and no wifi . Fine for us though. There is a phone box near the reception.

Review 29:Location was beautiful, felt like you were part of nature, living in the trees. Also being near a beach. Was surrounded by wildlife, with birds @ squirrel visiting bird table each day plus a hedgehog.

Review 30:Nothing. We treated it as a positive not to have WiFi or a phone signal

Review 31:Love the tranquillity of this beautiful, unspoilt place. If you are looking for seaside razzmatazz, this isn't for you. But simple, honest and natural everything just to relax and unwind, it's perfection

Review 32:We found the site hard to find. We did feel cold in the lodge at times. Not having any mobile phone signal especially with small children.

Review 33:Quiet location and safe area for the children. Well resourced kitchen facilities. Fantastically efficient shower which was so easy to use.

Review 34:the wifi was scarce had to go to information centre to access as the guest paid wifi was not accessible from my cabin, this was no problem as the holiday easy to be one without distractions so for me easy to put up with as all the other plus points outweigh the minus ones.

Review 35:Loved the location and solitude of the cabins, also enjoyed the view of the valley and horses and wildlife from the cabin. Was also only a 5-10 min walk to beach and local bus routes so was easy to get around. Will be visiting again next year maybe an annual thing.

Review 36:No mobile phone signal! (Not their fault!)

Review 37:Great views, clean and well equipped cabin, great outside space, close to the beach and good walks. Dog friendly

Review 38:No access neither to internet, nor the mobile phone network. Perfect get away, but you need to travel if you have to access your mailbox or anything.

Review 39:Location is good, very spectacular landscape.

Review 40:Next time i'll bring my memory foam topper is all i'll say

Review 41:charming setting - with some really nice touches like the hanging baskets and bird tables

Review 42:The only negative was that for the larger or less agile person, the shower cubicle was very small.

Review 43:The immaculate presentation of the chalet and its comprehensive equipment for self-catering. The pristine, tranquil surrounds, the privacy of both the chalet and its outside sitting area and its individual parking bay. From the visiting hedgehog and vole, to the tiny finches and fat pigeons, the wildlife on your doorstep was enchanting.

Review 44:Rooms probably needed a good airing and Vacuum under bed and in cupboards . Although the place was very clean though I think from time to time the place needs a vacuum with a Dyson which removes loads of dust compared to the cleaner provided . Behind and under sofas and all cupboards. Need to be wiped with an antiseptic as over time the dust will build up and a mustiness appears

Review 45:Trees and flowers lovely- very quiet and in a superb location being able to walk to the beach and get onto the South coast path

Review 46:NO FAULT OF Churchwood Valley but no eating establishments within a reasonable walking distance. No cell phone signal - did not know this before we arrived but turned out to be a little blessing in disguise.

Review 47:Very tranquil location. Beautiful trees and bird life. Only 10 mins walk to the beach - steep hill on the way back though.

Review 48:By reading the reviews already knew there would be no mobile signal but there is no free wifi neither, to connect each device you need to pay separately so for a family of 4 for 5 days would cost £48. The beach is lovely, loads of seaweed around plus to use any of the boats or anything you need to be a member. Even though it states no dogs thats ignored plus be prepared to get choked from everyones beach barbecues. The location of the site is far from normality, the nearest proper shop is the co-op its not worth going into Wembury village for shopping. If you have active kids this place will not be for you, after a few days they'll be pulling theirs and your hair out.

Review 49:Lovely location, friendly staff, and plenty of horses, rabbits and wildlife. This is for those which just want to relax and not bothered about a local drink or amusement. The lanes are really country lanes so please drive safely.

Review 50:We couldn't work the oven. Please provide instructions in-cabin.

Review 51:We liked the location, tranquility, view, privacy, and the friendly reception. We also support the environmental practices.

Review 52:We have been before and was in a pine cabin which was excellent - this time we were in a chalet type cabin it was very cramped and dated with no character - the patio area which in the other cabin was lovely - this one comprised of bench and two plastic chairs - quite disappointing and to be honest it did have an impact. The accommodation did change our overall opinion of the holiday instead of wanting to spend the evening in - it became a place to put your head. It's a shame that the new pine lodges are not available throughout.

Review 53:The nature is amazing and the Wembury beach beautiful. It was quiet and the staff very friendly.

Review 54:Although we knew that there was no wi fi in the chalet and we could use wifi in the information centre it was useless! Lot of people were annoyed that the could not use wifi people need to know this if they are depending on wifi like we were.

Review 55:Pleasant camp site in beautiful location. good facilities and spotlessly clean. useful information room. Good for wildlife and walking, very peaceful and quiet.

Review 56:Really beautiful place to stay. Even though they have a lot of accommodation available, you feel like you are the only person staying there, each cabin feels totally private.

Review 57:The bed is hard, which wasn't good for my hips. And we only had a shower, but next time I'll know to ask for lodge with bath.

Review 58:The lodge is perfect, comfortable, clean, everything we needed provided. Loved seeing the birds. So quiet. Easy to park. Good shop. Helpful but unintrusive staff. Sitting outside. Lots of walks. The Coast is spectacular round there.

Review 59:Everything.very friendly welcome from lovely helpful staff.location is idyllic. Comfortable accomodation, privacy, nature, beaches, country and coastal walk, will definitely be back.

Review 60:No mobile cover.

Review 61:Excluded area amidst beautiful scenery not far from a small beach. Facilities were basic but comfortable and clean with everything you need.

Review 62:The fact we could cook for ourselves, the lovely surrounds, seeing squirrels running around, and walking down to the beach at Wembury through some fields. The facilities in the cabin were great and we could even borrow a video from the Rec room free and gratis.

Review 63:i thought the accommodation which was advertised as 4 star would have been better, the place was very dated even though the electrical equipment etc was new and the place smelt damp and foisty even on a dry day the allocated parking was very small and i couldnt use it as it as the path inclined and i kept catching the bottom of my car on it. when returning at night it was dark and not easy to find our accomodation.

Review 64:the quietness

Review 65:Shower cubicle in small cabins is VERY small! Nowhere to put your shampoo or soap. Wi-fi signal in my cabin (extra fee) was generally too weak to be useful.

Review 66:Secluded, spotless accomodation. Staff are welcoming yet unobtrusive. Site is well maintained and visitor's centre is thoughtfully stocked with useful information for first time visitors to the area. Free wi-fi in visitor's centre is good.

Review 67:Payed for WiFi but was no signal so couldn't get it.

Review 68:The log cabin was nice and comfy and had everything we needed just ashame no signal for all of the holiday and couldn't get WiFi even after paying for it.

Review 69:No phone signal but thats sometimes not a bad thing.

Review 70:For a last minute bank holiday booking we couldn't fault this place. Everything we required was there, extremely clean and well furnished. Shower was amazing aswel. So near the beautiful Wembury beach.

Review 71:The cabin was rather cramped, and the tv small, but it seems that they are soon to be refurbished. The distance away from any entertainment venues.

Review 72:the place was spotlessly clean. The location is beautiful and the wildlife stunning. It would be no good for non drivers. It was more rural than we expected. It is more suited to daytime activities, than nightimes because of this reason.

Review 73:Wifi not great. You have to stand on a hill to get reception.

Review 74:We have been going for years. Peaceful and tranquil with lots of wildlife. Beautiful countryside and only a few minutes walk to the beach.

Review 75:Lack of modern communications around the site. Because of the terrain it needs good free WiFi throughout. No good for disabled with mobility problems.

Review 76:The freedom the accommodation gave for the group

Review 77:Very tight space for a family of 5, poor quality of Wi-Fi even at our own separate expense, the excuse for not providing toilet paper.

Review 78:The location in the middle of the forest and the serenity of the environment.

Review 79:Needs a plug-in kettle. The hob kettle took ages to boil and that is not good when you are desperate for a cuppa :-)

Review 80:The location was good with regards to the places we were visiting and the setting was excellent. Nice to have a detached place which was not affected by neighbours TV, noises, etc.

Review 81:Slightly dated accomodation, however this appeared to be being upgraded.

Review 82:Very clean and comfortable accomodation. Friendly staff and a great location.

Review 83:Away from the madding crowd over Easter. Peaceful with everything we needed. Even the cork screw. Friendly staff and a variety of tourist info. A shop, laundry room and internet room.

Review 84:Kitchen was very clean, the oven had been cleaned before we arrived. It was lovely and warm throughout our stay with plenty of hot water. The view was fantastic.

Review 85:Beautiful cabin, clean and tidy, all facilities you need, comfortable furniture, relaxing atmosphere, lots of wildlife and very very peaceful. We both enjoyed everything about the place. We wanted to stay longer

Review 86:Was annoyed to find the camp shop is not operative in winter - no word of this beforehand. After 6hr drive there we then had to go on another drive to get milk. Wifi is only available in reception area

Review 87:A very quiet spot. A warm and cosy dog & family-friendly chalet with very good facilities. Short walk to the beach which in winter is dog-friendly

Review 88:beautiful accommadation, gorgeous surroundings and excellent customer service.the owner of the park told u s a little of their history .absolute peace and quiet during our stay just birdsong and a bubbling stream.

Review 89:We stayed for Christmas not a summer holiday as we were visiting nearby family. It was difficult a access property along a potholed muddy track so we had to park on a nearby housing estate and walk half a mile. The facilities were very out of date. beds hard, chalet cold, poor shower and not much hot water for a bath. very noisy, when one person was up everyone was up and the heating clicked loudly and constantly. WIFI very expensive at £12 per device and there was no phone signal to use own mobile data etc. although the wifi was good enough if you were willing to pay. Most of this would not have been an issue for a summer beach holiday. could have had two hotels rooms for the price though.

Review 90:views, near beach

Review 91:I can't think of anything !!!

Review 92:Great place for a family break, easy access to city and to the beach and coastpath. Am thinking of suggesting it to my walking group as a base for a walking weekend.

Review 93:Accomodation dirty. Grounds overgrown Difficult driving access

Review 94:Very little - only the isolated location near the coast path. Management understanding when complained and offered refund without asking.

Review 95:Parking was a bit tight, not much space, shower was a squeeze

Review 96:Peaceful location, not far from beach, would be fantastic in the summer, very cozy, clean and tidy, pack of household items provided.

Review 97:Meeting a tractor on the narrow road first evening we arrived but that's all and a one time event.

Review 98:The location, staff and a fantastic lodge in wonderful surroundings - already booked again for longer next year.

Review 99:Only being a few minutes away from the beach was convenient with the dogs. Cabins were lovely and we were so pleased with our stay. Will definitely visit again

Review 100:Could do with new soft furnishings and maybe a lick of paint, but loved it non the less :-)

Review 101:We had a fantastic time, it's a very peaceful place and everyone loved it including our two jack Russell's.

Review 102:Bed could have been more comfortable.

Review 103:Cabin was very basic but was clean and really warm....the kitchen was well equipped and location beautiful. It was exactly what we were looking for as we took our dogs with us, all in all a great weekend and the dogs had lots of fun on the beach.

Review 104:The cabins are set in a lovely woodland setting, close to the sea and not too far from the pub. It was my first vist since the 1970's and it was good to see that somethings hadn't changed, but I was glad that the loo is now inside!

Review 105:The mattresses were extremely uncomfortable with springs that popped out. Didn't get a single nights good sleep and therefore left a day early with sore backs! The twin cabin had a tiny shower which was fine for us as we both are are very slim. Anyone slightly over weight will barely fit in there!

Review 106:Location and amenities on offer would make it ideal for couples.cabins are private with beautiful views of the woods. The walk to the beach is short and very pleasant. A ideal getaway to escape all technology !

Review 107:This is a perfect location for a holiday. We spent only three days here, but we would like to come back during the summer. The cabin was very well equipped, the information centre has books, toys and DVDs that can be used freely during your stay there. The location is also within a walking distance from the beach(10 minutes) and the landscape is amazing. Even if we were here during October, the comfort of the cabin was with no fault, and the electric radiators were more than enough to keep it warm during the night. We would recommend it to anyone who wants to relax and have a perfect holiday.

Review 108:Shower was a dribble and very hard to work to push the lever. Damp smell and sofa and chairs in room felt damp. Your review questions did not allow for mature couple with elderly parent!

Review 109:Location is beautiful. Loved the sound of conkers falling and squirrels scurrying around. Kitchen well equipped.

Review 110:The chalet needed updating and was full of unusual furniture and items, the electricals heating and pull cords for lights seemed to need updating and looked uncomfortable and precarious

Review 111:Secluded area with a beach within walking distance

Review 112:The road to the site was a white knuckle, my clutch control has improved, never mind cant do much about it.

Review 113:I loved the location, wonderful wildlife anf fauna. Information and staff are so very helpful. I would return to this site. Beautiful

Review 114:The wireless wasn't strong enough to reach our cabin. The bedrooms were a bit dusty.

Review 115:The cabins were well equipped. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 116:A bit far from anything we wanted but we had booked by mistake. Decided to stay though as it was late in the day when we arrived. We did day trips to where we wanted to go and the extra distance was a bit of a pain. Nice to be able to cook our own food though.

Review 117:Peaceful and serene. Good space for three adults. Nice view of stream, with animals, birds about.

Review 118:I would like numbered allocated parking spaces

Review 119:We visited in 1990 with my young daughters. Just revisited with my (now ) adult daughter and her husband. In the interim we lived in Australia. Churchwood is as peaceful and as lovely now as it was then but with updated facilities.

Review 120:Didn't warn that you should have your own towels. And no mobile phone signal (but may be it's good!))

Review 121:Total independence, great nature, peaceful atmosphere, close to coastline. Luck of weather... Fantastic rest!

Review 122:there was absolutely nothing not to like, some would say the lack of phone signals in the valley could be awkward, but to us it was a total bonus, adding to the beautiful tranquility of the surroundings

Review 123:traffic caused us to checkin very late which was no trouble for the very helpful member of staff who switched lights and heating on in our cabin for us, location stunning and peaceful, cabin perfect for our needs, so pleased we found this little gem,we will be regular guests, thanks for your help Tom, you reassured us during our stressful trip, and were so helpful giving us directions,

Review 124:The bed was extremely hard for me and could have done with better quality pillows. Ours were totally flat. The wireless internet does not work at any of the cabins but can be accessed from the info room and office. Was a little inconvenient for planning my ongoing journey.

Review 125:Location of the cottages nestling amongst the trees. The close proximity to the beach and the village as well as some really great pubs.

Review 126:Accommodation felt adequate but old and not well maintained. One chap leaned on the wooden railing and fell into the shrubs cos railing was rotten through. Everything feels30-40 years old and not updated since

Review 127:Location is nice, although not easy to get to

Review 128:The wi-fi/internet access is still finding its feet; also the lack of mobile phone coverage whilst adding the peaceful experience was a little bit inconvenient at times.

Review 129:The chalets are hidden away in the woods which made our stay particularly peaceful. The Churchwood allows pets to stay which added to the experience. The site is close to the coast with easy access to beaches and country walk.

Review 130:Very basic and cramped accommodation. WiFi available only in office area of the site.

Review 131:The location amongst the trees, and near (within walking distance) to a beach, was excellent.

Review 132:We only stayed for 2 nights for our daughters graduation. We would have loved to have been able to stay longer and had time to explore further. The staff were extemely helpful and the accomodation was in good order, well equipped and in a beautiful setting. Not suitable for anyone with reduced mobility. Would certainly like to return when we have more time.

Review 133:Absolutely no phone signal at all, you have to drive 3 miles to get one. Internet they offer is useless and not strong at all so with no phone signal you are cut off from civilization (some may like this) The shower was very small. The chair in the living room was not comfy and was tiny for two people. The area itself is not very accessible, very small country roads to find it (a nightmare if driving at night, especially if you have to reverse!).

Review 134:Loved the cabin, very basic but had everything you needed (take towels). We had a late check in, the young man in the shop was very helpful and friendly on arrival. Cabin was nice and small but fine for two people. Bed was very comfy, I would have likes a proper sofa in the living area, the chair was old and not comfy at all, and belonged in a nursing home I thought. Cabin/kitchen/bathroom was spotless. Anyone bigger than a size 18 would have a struggle fitting in the shower though!

The Fine Print

The on-site shop is open from April until November. As Churchwood Valley is located on the side of a steep valley, the access may not be suitable for those with mobility problems. There is no guaranteed mobile phone reception on-site, however there is a payphone. Mobile reception can be obtained a short walk from the site.
