Reviews for Thrumster House
Review 1:Property was energy inefficient, and needed a lot of restorative and redecorative work. No central heating, and once outside bedroom it was cold. On the expensive side for a B&B in Caithness. Very poor and intermittent television reception.
Review 2:Spacious, warm and clean room with comfortable bed. Good Wi-Fi connection. Very good quality breakfast. Friendly welcome and good service. Interesting older property.
Review 3:This is a B and B with Character in bucketfuls. You'll never find such a place in the whole of the UK. The building dates back to the 1790's, and mum and daughter run this business. The house, or Mansion House, as it could be called, has passed through the 'family hands'. If you yearn after 5 star décor then search further afield. Lovely people, a hearty breakfast served up in a dining room you'd find in Downton Abbey, with the silver utensils and china crockery. It was lovely. Step out the door and have a walk around the grounds, and woods. Fantastic. An experience i'll never forget. Fantastic value for money.
Review 4:Place was a little run down, needs some repairs
Review 5:We were greeted with tea and biscuits. Breakfast was excellent...fresh fruit and yogurt and lots to choose from. Hostess was super friendly and made us feel very welcome.Excellent location and very quiet!
Review 6:Only because I had been on the bike for the week the bed was a bit soft for my knackered back
Review 7:Very warm and friendly family made me very welcome after doing the rab. Very rustic and roaring log fire created a very good atmosphere.
Review 8:Nothing really although some may find the facilities need refreshing but for us that was part of the charm.
Review 9:Very different and welcoming. You are staying in someone's private house with a lot of character.
Review 10:Staying at Thrumster House is like being the private guests in a (slightly faded) country house. The room was furnished like somebody's private bedroom, just lent to guests for the night - with private books and mementoes. This makes the charm of the place, but if you are looking for a clean-cut modern B&B experience, this is not for you. The two owners are wonderful, and the conversations we had could not have been more fascinating. You can learn a lot about a particular perspective on life in Scotland, and the tour of the Broch in the garden is something special.
Review 11:I loved the way we were treated by the owners, they are extremely welcoming family and they make you feel "at home" right away. They do special diet requests as well. The house and the garden it's like stepping back in time! Simply fabulous!! I will definitely be back! Thank you so much
Review 12:There was nothing to dislike in our opinion. Some people who want a more formal atmosphere might find this relaxed style in which guests get together at meal times not to their liking but we met some lovely folk who helped to make it a special stay. The house is quirky and old and don't expect 5 star up to date fittings but thats what you get in old country houses and adds o the character of the place.
Review 13:Gorgeous old manor house in lovely grounds which included a neolithic 'broch'. The mother and daughter who run the place were so welcoming, great fun, and could not have done more for us. Having two friendly dogs themselves they were extremely dog friendly. We had a great time.
Review 14:We felt that the whole of this tired mansion needed to be taken care of to enable guests to feel comfortable.Outdoors it was in a potentially beautiful setting, large grounds and scenic but rather neglected. We would return as we liked the hosts,it would be lovely to see this Mansion in its former glory.
Review 15:The hosts were welcoming and tried their best to run this old mansion, though the bedding was clean the bedroom could have done with some tlc,we enjoyed our breakfast and the old mansion had a tired luxury feel about it.dusty chandeliers and mirrors reflecting beautiful works of art.
Review 16:Traditional Scottish estate house, with many interesting architectural features, including a grand staircase. Owners and their very friendly dogs created a relaxed atmosphere right from when we arrived. Phone ahead and ask for an evening meal and be prepared for some local produce beautifully cooked and presented. Take time to examine the broch in the grounds.
Review 17:Very comfortable stay and very welcoming hosts. The house is quite splendid and I enjoyed hearing its history. We also had a tour of the broch which was fascinating. The breakfast was the best I had all holiday.
Review 18:Nothing but an excellent experience
Review 19:Extremely welcoming and friendly reception. Very comfortable large bedroom Excellent breakfast Visit to family owned broch
Review 20:Nothing to dislike.
Review 21:The old Victorian manor house and its location on the Thrumster Estate is in itself outstanding. Fantastic breakfasts, large bedroom and a very interesting, infromative and helpful family.
Review 22:The host family are an absolute delight! There was coffee and cake ready for me when I arrived, which was taken by the fire. The friendly dogs were lovely to have around and the family couldn't have been more helpful. My room was lovely and oh so comfortable! The WiFi connection was great and really useful in what is otherwise a signal blindspot! Breakfast?! Where do I begin?! Lovely, fresh and home made.....I won't need to eat for weeks! Cannot believe the value for money!
Review 23:Describing the house and furnishings as 'tired' is kind. Once no doubt a magnificent home has slipped into disrepair and is in need of serious T L C.
Review 24:The setting for Thrumster House is tranquil and the location convenient when travelling the east coast. The home and family have an interesting history and connections to the community. The hostesses were most interesting and accommodating. I'd encourage those with an interest in history and willing to overlook housekeeping issues to visit; others might best look elsewhere.
Review 25:The welcome was warm and genuine, the bedroom large and comfortable, shower was roomy enough and did the job. Although we were offered an evening meal we chose to eat at the Old Smiddy nearby. Our hosts Katherine and Islay were wonderful company.
Review 26:it was quite adequate
Review 27:very friendly ladies who are more then available for a welcoming reception. a very special house, full of victorian history. excellent breakfast.... a very special and nice place to stay

Review 52:Quaintness. Location. Shabby chicness. Archeological sites. Owners. Cuisine.Eccentricity.
