Reviews for The Carlton Hotel
Review 1:The room was freezing due to the window being left wide open then there was a massive plank of wood under the mattress !!!!
Review 2:We complained and after looking at several rooms we moved to a slightly better room but yet they tried to charge us more.
Review 3:Shower: temperature ok but water pressure low. Hotel is an architectural gem, with refurbished foyer and carpets on the ground floor in a tasteful grey. Elsewhere it was a bit tatty. Our room had black carpet with sparkly bits in it and a black silk bedspread! The room not sound proof: we heard loud talking/arguing and then deep snoring from next door!
Review 4:Lovely location with sea view. The cooked breakfast was fine, the ingredients were good quality, and a fresh cooked egg, but would have been even better warm, not cold. Could provide a microwave to heat it up? Adequate room with good portable heater: the plug top had fallen off making it potentially hazardous, but they repaired it next day.
Review 5:We had a ground floor triple room. The room was not very clean and the bathroom was dirty. It was also really really cold in the room as it didn't have any radiators or heating even though it said it did on booking.com The fixtures and fitting were very old and worn out including the bathroom and shower etc. The kettle didn't work unless you held your finger on the button really hard for the whole boil time.
Review 6:Great location if your heading for the tunnel. Car parking at the back. The breakfast was beautiful.
Review 7:l stayed at the Carlton for a week from 28th Dec 2015 until 4th Jan 2016. The room l was allocated looked ok but the light in the ensuite did not work. l reported this to management the following day and went out. On my return l had been moved to another room,203, l checked the previous room to see if anything had been left behind as management had moved all my belongings while l was out and it was than l noticed excrement on the tiled wall alongside the toilet. Room 203 had a dirty carpet and there was a foul smell from something. l slept with my clothes on as l didn't want to make contact with the bedding. There was no pillow or mattress protection so l would have just a sheet separating me from a mattress that upwards of 300 people might have slept on. On leaving l checked all areas to make sure l had not dropped/left anything behind and in doing so moved a bedside cabinet that had rubbish under it including a half full KFC milk shake that had solidified hence the smell. Only stay here if you are really really desperate. One of the worst hotels l had ever stayed in. Nearly forgot came away with an itchy bite mark!!! in the middle of winter.
Review 8:View of the sea when you step out of the front door.
Review 9:Excellent price for a hotel only 10 minutes from Eurotunnel. Free parking. Tea and coffee making facility. Wi-fi that actually worked (often not the case when booking through this site). It is not a palace, but for less than £30, we did not expect luxury.
Review 10:You can hear everything going on next door and unfortunately we had noisy neighbours. The bar just needs some quiet music so it's not so quiet in there. On the booking site it says bath but we only had a shower.
Review 11:It's very clean, staff are friendly, drinks aren't too expensive in the bar.
Review 12:The room smelled damp, the bathroom fitting were not level so you couldn't use the shelves, the bed was hard and the radiator was rusty. I paid for three nights but only stayed for one - so not good value at all!
Review 13:The staff were helpful and friendly
Review 14:Bathroom unclean in places. Shower tap not working properly, toilet wonky, wet carpet in part of room, cold room with a plug in heater which was hidden.
Review 15:No heating in hotel No working tv in room Steep stairs Small lift Unable to put pram in lift Rooms difficult for access due to narrow entrance not suitable if you are disabled or old and infirm Outdated and old fashioned decor
Review 16:Receptionist was helpful with facilities available to him
Review 17:quite cold as no ch in room. had a heater though cd have done with more blankets
Review 18:nice staff very polite and friendly. breakfast fresh all very good value for the money
Review 19:Breakfast was poorly organised. Waiter thought it was necessary to teach us (rudely and loudly) how to make a cup of tea in the cup with lukewarm water when all we asked for was a pot of tea. The resulting cup that he insisted on making for us was undrinkable. He needs to learn that tea needs to be made with boiling water and that customers do not like to be publicly ridiculed. I did email the hotel directly about this but had no reply. Maybe would not have put this on Booking.com if they had.
Review 20:Location and price. Great to have off street parking. View was full on sea. Room was fine for the price we paid.
Review 21:There wasn't anything we didn't like
Review 22:It was clean and comfortable also it was set overlooking the sea,we all had a full English including the little ones and TVs in our rooms
Review 23:The bedrooms were vetuste. Ripped curtains, window not closing, awful bathroom, dirty with stained curtains. I regret not having taken pictures!
Review 24:Beautiful spot
Review 25:The room had large gaps in Windows that let wind blow straight in making room very cold. Room had no central heating just a little broke plug in heater. Just one sheet and blanket on beds. Very dirty and dated. Light stayed on outside window all night so we all had no sleep. More like a local b&b for homeless people. Rebooked our return journey to avoid hotel from hell.
Review 26:Location
Review 27:Old and run down after first floor. Cold bedrooms, dirty old toilets. Wind blew windows all night. Mattresses very springy. Too many plug sockets in one adaptor. Husband got a shock when unplugging one. Staff didn't speak good English when trying to complain.
Review 28:Outside looked beautiful, got such a wow factor and thought what great value for money reception was stunning first floor even beautiful. But after that it was a big let down. Note photos on page are only the beautiful first floor. But upstairs is nothing like this.
Review 29:I love the Folkestone's sea- side it is wonderful. The hotel is right on front of the sea. The staff is friendly and very helpful.Good value for money,
Review 30:shown 3 different rooms before getting the one I booked and paid for. The hotel is grubby throughout, corridors dark, plumbing is neglected and taps ceased. Baths and showers (if working) are dirty. Heating poor, carpets grubby and bedding sparse. My view was over the rear car park (despite booking seaview) which was dark and muddy, and a long walk away from reception. Lift does not go up to the top floor, from there you have struggle up poorly lit stairs with dirty and torn carpets. Only stopped one night although I intended to stop 3.. couldn't wait to get out!
Review 31:breakfast.. although it was eaten in a cold and drafty restaurant
Review 32:The couple in the next room who had loud, prolonged sex and whose headboard banged against our wall.Until 2.30 in the morning (when we had to get up at 5.30! - and oops,I made a LOT of noise while getting up and out of the room!)
Review 33:We got an exceptionally cheap deal and the location for the Chunnel is very good.
Review 34:lift very small and ancient, corridors a labyrinth giving a general uneasy feeling. Nightmare in case of fire! bedroom cramped , seaview very limited through cracked window, shower pitiful. bedroom standard nowhere near the publicity photo sent. The hotel car park was the worst we had every seen in all our travels;
Review 35:the breakfast was surprisingly good.
Review 36:The breakfast was not great. The man on reception when we arrived was not personable.
Review 37:The people who owned the hotel were very friendly and helpful. Great location for us & lovely sea view.
Review 38:The hotel look like a brothel inside it was cold no hot water and very dirty. We checked in and with in 1 hours we checked out and found a new hotel to stay in
Review 39:The room was unacceptable standard and noisy, and I was really annoyed by the wind gusts coming through ventilator Didn't had central heating, shower was not up to scratch , TV wasn't working Overall I couldn't really sleep or relax for the night paid for I would never ever go to this property again
Review 40:Nothing really
Review 41:Rooms and some areas of hotel are tired, however they are working on this, it is a wip. Guys --- Please check the room heater wiring Room 107 -- Not good !!! Sorry x
Review 42:The staff / owner made you so welcome. Excellent. Breakfast was good and plentiful. A lovely location .. Sun rose on our second morning and wow what a view.
Review 43:we were travelling with 3 small children and my disabled mother. I requested a disabled room and a family room and telephoned the hotel to double check the arrangements. On arrival they had reserved 4 double rooms for us, none of which was a disabled room. The night staff refused to refund me, so I contacted the manager the night day by email but he has not answered and I have received no refund.
Review 44:Room was compact with double and single bed. Bed cover was ripped on double, the shower was awful and fell off the wall.
Review 45:Excellent location - right on sea front. Free parking was a bonus. Staff helpful.
Review 46:Room (standard singe for 29 £) was small and in need of some maintenance work. Hotel parking too small. Anyway, looking at the value for money, I would go there again, but only to a budget room. I paid 29 £, which was all right for the quality I received, but if the more expensive rooms are in the same condition as mine, they would be too expensive, I assume.
Review 47:Great location on the ocean walk, lovely views. Good value for money. Allowed my 2 dogs without a surcharge. Walking distance to the centre and restaurants. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Review 48:Booked a sea view, didn't get one! Asked where parking was, was told it was full and to park in pay and display, asked for change to park was told they didn't have any! Room was awful, dated and dirty didn't even want to wash in bathroom in the morning!
Review 49:Nothing
Review 50:The reception area decor doesn't match the room at all. It's allvery misleading. I changed rooms twice and both rooms were equally asdirty. Ceiling was leaking obviously from upstairs toilet and bathroom. The smell from bed linen and carpet is obnoxious. Stay away , don'tbe fooled by the the Internet pictures. It's very very verydisgusting!!!
Review 51:Liked the moment I checked out!!
Review 52:My quiet room was not quiet.. Music from restaurant woke me I couldn't here news on TV. Freestanding radiator was barely enough to keep room adequately warm. Hot tap in bathroom was too hot, scalding hot.
Review 53:Cheap and we'll located, plenty for breakfast.
Review 54:The bed sheets, covers, pillow covers, linens and everything was dirty and had not been changed! Gross!!! The WiFi in the room did not work so I had to go down to the lobby for working WiFi. This could have been a much better experience if they put more effort in to cleanliness, unchanged beddings is a big no-no in hotel business!
Review 55:The location was ideal and as advertised it had on-site parking for guests.
Review 56:Room dirty, bathroom disgusting, beds were not made the next day, towels not changed so we couldn't shower the next day as they were still wet and no where to dry them. Damp musty wardrobe so couldn't hang clothes in it, bedspread covered in stains so had to pull sheet up so it was not touching me. Breakfast awfull and water and damp running down wall, absolutely disgusting.!!!!!
Review 57:Absolutely nothing.!!!!!!!!!!
Review 58:Great hotel. We used it for the night to catch an early train to France. It was very comfortable and clean with a kettle in the room - so very handy for a quick cuppa when having an early start! We also loved the stylish decor! also has a car park at the rear of the hotel which makes it even better! We plan to go back and explore the town someday too!
Review 59:We discovered bed bugs, crawling on the bed. That ruined everything. Bed bugs!! Sorry. Would never risk going ever again.
Review 60:Location, staff and value for money is great!
Review 61:Micro room with a very lumpy bed. The breakfast was served up literally within seconds of being ordered so was obviously sitting awaiting distribution. Lukewarm tinned tomatoes, baked beans ditto, tiny coprolite-like sausage and a rock solid fried egg. Not a pleasant experience first thing in the morning.
Review 62:Convenient and cheap with friendly staff.
Review 63:nothing...looking forward to renovations being completed. car park a bit of a sham...but it is an awesome little hotel wifi a bit naff.
Review 64:the staff!!! friendly and helpful, warm clean rooms, basic but good breakfast. excellent value for money.
Review 65:Only complaint. Salt and pepper pots had rust on lids.
Review 66:Very pleasant stay. Bed clean and comfortable. This hotel as really improved from a visit recently.
Review 67:On the ground floor at the front of the hotel it was very noisy because of drunks passing by until early hours of the morning. Other than that it was fine. I would come back.
Review 68:The hotel is very cheap, very clean, the bar and reception is modern and looks nice.
Review 69:The room had only one small electric heater (this had a broken foot) . there was a draught through the old window frames. The beer in the bar was stale, small leak from pipe in bathroom.
Review 70:I have used this b&b twice now. the guest house was in the middle of a refurbishment & the standard had improved from my last visit. The room i used had a very large bath in the bathroom, Nice breakfast (but there could have been more choice)
Review 71:No heating, rooms very very cold. Cooked breakfast wasn't given a choice, so had no time. And other tables just wanted beans alone which you couldn't do. Or scrambled eggs which you couldn't do. It's about choice! Only had apricot jam. And no fruit. Plus the hit water in room wasn't hot.
Review 72:Close to the euro tunnel
Review 73:Very basic room and dated
Review 74:Room could do with an upgrade .. Our room was shabby but the couple we travelled with had a nicer room ... So looks like they are making their way through it!!
Review 75:The room was disgracefully dirty, the bedside light did not work, the plug was behind the bed. I pulled the bed away from the wall to check, the plug and found it in two halves and very dangerous. The skirting and wall behind the bed was filthy thick with cobwebs and dust. All in all a horrible and dreadful experience.
Review 76:The location was good
Review 77:Nothing bad at all.
Review 78:Great old hotel in a superb location, full of character. Staff were great, breakfast was excellent, sea view as promised, parking out back.
Review 79:Shabby decor, towel lodged in window frame to keep shut, lamp only worked when you kept finger in switch, and bath/shower cold tap did not work at all. Got what you paid for
Review 80:Location opposite sea front, free parking, fairly good value at £47 for a double room including breakfast. Nice friendly staff loaned me an umbrella as it was raining
Review 81:Mislead on room size. Booked a 35sq meters our room was 15 sq meters. Freezing cold in the room. Only heating wes a dodgy portable heater but we could not have this on as to dangerous with a toddler in the room. Window would not seal. Heard the wind and night revellers all night. Only stayed 1 out of 2 nights as could not bring our child back into a dangerous area. Breakfast was poor
Review 82:Staff were friendly
Review 83:Bathroom - no basin plug, and basin/shaver light not working
Review 84:Welcoming staff, good location, free car parking, excellent breakfast, very competitive price and free WiFi.
Review 85:Poor room, In places dark and dingy stair case and corridors, car park like a building site. This hotel is for young travellers passing through.
Review 86:location and breakfast
Review 87:I couldn't get the plug out the bath as it had no chain. So I had to leave my water in ? The window rattled. There was an old sock over my hall light! Old nickers behind bed!
Review 88:I asked for a bath, which I did get
Review 89:That was the worse hotel! First we got such a small, dark room...so we ask for another one, and we got it. The second one was worse then first one! The was a hole in the ceiling, dirty window, there were "mushrooms" on curtains and whole in the window was stoped by toilet papper! Room smells bad! So we asked for another room...and we got it. The third one was better, bathroom was old but ok, there was no battery in remote control ( TV) but the most AMAZING THING WAS USED CONDOM UNDER THE BED!!!!! THAT WAS DISGUSTING!!!!!!! That is the most DIRTY HOTEL IN THE WORLD!!!!!! WE WILL NEVER COME BACK THERE AGAIN!!!!
Review 90:The Recepcionist was really nice, he tried to do his best. The location is perfect! Free parking and WiFi!
Review 91:Room cold (net curtains waving about in breeze from cracks around windows); only 2 teabags and no coffee provided in room; electricity went off on my floor overnight > no heating, kettle not working etc.
Review 92:Good location. Friendly and helpful staff.
Review 93:Our first impression was not good - the place looked tatty and in need of redecoration. Our room was adequate but not comfortable - there was no radiator and the electric heater was faulty! Tea bags were provided, but no alternative such as coffee or chocolate, no biscuits, and there wasn't even a spoon - very poor! The bathroom was very uninviting - there was no heater, the bath-plug had come off the chain, and the toilet pan moved while you were sitting on it! Breakfast staff were unsmiling and unwelcoming.
Review 94:The hotel is well located for the town, the beach and the theatre. The breakfast was good and well-cooked, although there was no other choice such as poached or scrambled eggs, and no vegetarian alternative.
Review 95:It was quite cold in the room, Windows need replacing but the room did have a heater in it.
Review 96:Location excellent, we had a sea view. Staff really helpful and friendly
Review 97:No brown sauce for breakfast. They did bring me some in a bowl but there should have been sachets. There was no cornflakes on the last day
Review 98:Staff were all very nice and always helpful
Review 99:Bathroom was terrible - leaky toilet and old mixer shower over narrow bath with shower rail hanging down, heater to close to bed, bed had blanket and sheet instead of duvet with only one pillow each and I got badly bitten by something...?, stairways dirty, lift tiny, poor organisation at breakfast. Oh and tripped on rubble in car park which is covered with it.
Review 100:Liked the decor of the room and entance.
Review 101:Breakfast was cold Shower holder broken Single glazed windows with storage heater so cold at night time Needs to be dragged out the 1800's
Review 102:The hotel is located great and it is kept very clean
Review 103:room was rather small.whole place has seen better days.very untidy over the whole property.
Review 104:was very handy as I was travellingon to france the next day.
Review 105:It's no fault of the hotel but the dividing walls where so thin that we could hear the couple next door talking and snoring the 1st night.
Review 106:The staff your amazing and extremely help with my elderly disabled grandmother. The place is clean and very accommodating.
Review 107:As mentioned to the Manager/Owner, the coffee at breakfast was not hot enough as it was kept on a hot plate.
Review 108:The staff were friendly and polite and did not bother us unduly, we were very much left to ourselves which suited us as a mature couple. We were impressed that the Manager/Owner knocked on our door mid week to make sure we were happy with our stay. Having stayed in many hotels we had not had this experience before and were quite impressed.
Review 109:Wasn't dirty, but felt 'grubby'. No gluten free breakfast option. Not a problem in itself, but I wish they had made this clear after making both written and verbal requests, which were accepted. Windows covered in condensation, so no sea view unless windows were wiped down. Lift does not go to top floor and very small. Not sure it would accommodate a wheelchair of any size, or even larger than average visitors.
Review 110:Cheap. You get what you pay for. Good location. Parking. Good breakfast for price.
Review 111:Gap in Windows so cold
Review 112:Hotel was great looking better thn last time I stayed. Room looked great bed comfortable but window there was a gap so wind came though amd was cold but I had extra blanket so I was ok definitely stay again
Review 113:the room was not clean (hair in the toilet), the bathroom was decorated with a cheap and unhygienic plastic shower curtain causing wet floors when taking a shower, no soap or douche gel at all - lack of hygiene - horrible interior the room was cold and he lack of central heating was solved with an electrical heater which was not working the breakfast was in a cellar looking like a canteen, the English breakfast was not great, wifi was working very slowly the parking was in a very dirty and muddy place behind the hotel building
Review 114:view on the sea was the only plus the front of the building is nice however inside a refurbishment would be welcome, the hotel is in a poor state Folkestone has some nice old buildings however this town has lost its glory
Review 115:The bathroom was basic. Didn't like the amount of noise the people in the other room was making (arguing top of their voice) all night, but not hotels fault
Review 116:Location was good sea view, quiet room, good cooked breakfast
Review 117:If anything bad was to be said just that the breakfast isnt that great and the milk was off.
Review 118:Lovely hotel frendly staff good location for channel tunnel.
Review 119:Very bad sound proofing. Room was very noisy, difficult to sleep and floodlight was pouring into our room making it very light. Our room had a sea view.
Review 120:Central location and easy to get to the channel tunnel
Review 121:Not the cleanest rooms, the bedding was fine but the general cleanliness of the room left a lot to be desired, dirt windowsills dusty radiator and skirting board, towels thread bear.
Review 122:Location was perfect, looking over the sea the hotel has a beautiful outlook, and not far to walk for good restarants and bars.
Review 123:The only drawback is the parking. Free Hotel parking is very limited, on a first come first park basis. The hotel probably holds around 200 guests and their car park probably holds 10-15 cars at a push. There is other parking but it is either time limited or expensive. A car park opposite the hotel is about £1.00 per hour and pay and display along the sea front is limited to 3 hours at £3.60. overnight parking is free, if i remember correctly (don't quote me on this) from 8pm-8am along the sea front and 8pm-7am in the paying car park.
Review 124:Customer service was excellent, breakfast, was full English, with extras and included in the price. great value for money, The room was clean, bed was comfortable and linen was clean and fresh. The hotel was old and needs updating but i like old houses so didn't bother me that things were a bit tired and worn, clean and comfortable and great service more than made up for it. we would visit this hotel again for an overnight stay. The view of the sea is wonderful and the 10 min walk down to the sea is steep but worth the walk, their is a lift down to the sea front, but we didn't use it.
Review 125:No hot water morning or night Asked for someone to look at it Couldn't fix it.toilet seat broken. No slip mats in Bath and boy fell over trying to take a shower as was told the water would heat up But it stayed cold
Review 126:Bed comfortable and clean room. Breakfast nice
Review 127:The room we were in was a large room previously but had been partitionedinto two!!using a small thin partition wall. Therefore the man that wason the other side of the room kept us awake all night with his constantsnoring hence we did not get any sleep at all so in turn we left a dayearlier than we had paid for because we could not abide the thought ofanother sleep deprived night.
Review 128:Don't know who chose decor but Black and Silver is not a good Look, we think the cleaner or cook hung the wall paper on there day off !
Review 129:Good location, bed ,sheets, and towels all seemed new...overall for the price a one night stay was O K
Review 130:Maintainance of the building is behind. Thin walls, so you could hear talking etc of neighbours. After cleaning no changes of towels, not everything is left clean.
Review 131:Beautiful seeview and beach. Close to channel tunnel. Shops, restaurants nearby and a good price.
Review 132:The decor was very poor and outdated. The bed covers were old and torn and need replacing with new quilts. My daughter had a single room but it was small and smelt fusty and she refused to stay in it.
Review 133:We had a lovely view overlooking the sea.
Review 134:The hotel room i got is quite dated. It doesn't provide hair drier. The bathroom door doesn't have a lock. We were given cups but no spoon to make a drink.
Review 135:It is located near a small town. You can go to nearest restaurants by foot. It is exactly in front of seaside. The sunrise view is superb. The staff was great.
Review 136:Bed not made each day-covers just pulled up. Could be more welcoming at breakfast-no one knew procedure/not shown to a table etc. (A board saying "help yourself to cereals etc and waitress will be with you shortly" would suffice) Also as soon as you sat down order for breakfast taken and brought out almost straight away while you were still eating cereals, having said that the actual breakfast was very nice-freshly cooked and nicely presented. Help your self coffee was also nice and hot-all items kept topped up-just need more communication. Would also be helpful if car parking information was sent once booked-there is a very uneven car park at the back of the hotel which i was lucky enough to find a space in-it is not guaranteed. know the area so guessed where it was but would have been helpful to know before hand as there is no where else to park with out going into a paying car park even for 5 mins while you check in and take luggage in.
Review 137:Location/reasonable price/cooked breakfast
Review 138:You pay for what you get. Mould in bathroom around bath and thick dust behind the beds. Pillow was stained. One of the remote controls didnt work and hardly any water came out of the shower and lukewarm in the evening. The tea and coffee didnt taste at all like it. Bought our own from the local shop.
Review 139:The location and price. Praise to the lady working in the dining room in the morning serving the breakfast, she didnt speak much but worked her socks off on her own !
Review 140:The water pressure was dreadful - washing my hair took ages as did filling the toilet tank! There was a large mould stain in the corner of the room probably from a leak in the corner of the roof. The family room was very cramped and there was nowhere to put anything - a few hooks for towels would have helped a lot.
Review 141:The location was great and the hotel was very good value for money. Lovely seaview from the room.
Review 142:Lumpy mattresses. Noisy when the party goers are walking along the sea front. We did not return for our second visit and therefore lost our booking money
The Fine Print
Please note the on site parking is limited. The elevator in the property can only accommodate a variety of wheelchair sizes.
