Reviews for Palace Hotel
Review 1:Arrived early and wouldn't let us check in early even though there was a room ready? Extra charge for parking, we avoided paying this by parking around the corner from the hotel. Hotel is starting to look very tired in places, and needs maintenance doing.
Review 2:Good central location
Review 3:Staff were superb and couldn't do enough for us. Loved the original charm of the hotel. I've seen many comments saying it needs updating but in actual fact, I think that's what I like about it. Lovely breakfast and the evening meal we had was delicious.
Review 4:This hotel prides itself as being dog friendly. That means they let guests keep dogs in their rooms. Unfortunately one of my sons and I have an allergy to dogs so at night we were wheezing and eyes running. Staff changed the bedding but it didn't help much.
Review 5:Great location, helpful staff especially at front desk, generous breakfast, nice and quiet, lots of areas for grandma to sit and read while the rest of us went hiking.
Review 6:My Husband suffers with Arthiritis so quite a few stairs and slopes but very well situated.
Review 7:Lovley Location Comfortable Room Near to the Opera House where we went to see a concert, Excellent value for money.
Review 8:The internet connection is not the best at times which is not good for me as I have lots of e- mails to answer at nights. The food menu is very poor for a person like me who has been there now 2mths and I'm a fussy eater. There is only two things I like on the menu. Sometimes when I get in I just want to eat and stay in my room but I have to go out every night. Also id like to stay in the same room 213 is a nice room for me.
Review 9:The palace is clean ,warm and situated perfectly for the town and bars. Staff are friendly and good gym, pool
Review 10:arrived 3 oclock. room cold. no heating no hot water. .arrived back after an evening out. room still cold. asked for an electric heater.. it never appeared...room heating came on following morning as we were about to leave. . complained to reception who said they would look into it...which was little consolation to us
Review 11:location very good. room clean.
Review 12:The attitude of reception when she couldn't find our booking . Com booking , even when we proved it , problem was sorted and it was admitted that it was there fault , pool is dark and dingy, Changing rooms are a bit tatty No curtain in bathroom , although glass is frosted at bottom it's still opp the shower Bathroom cold , bedroom was warm
Review 13:Liked the grandness of the hotel , the fab staircase , large room , huge bed , location right near everything in Buxton , even a row of restaurants at the bottom of the steps, Breakfast fab buffet style ,, all the staff very nice
Review 14:Do not think you should have to pay to park in the hotel grounds. Biscuits on the hospitality tray in the room would be a nice touch
Review 15:The pleasant helpful staff The convenience of the location for a trip to the theatre
Review 16:Wasn't aware that car park would be £9.00 the breakfast at £10.00 each total £40.00 for two nights. So the last minute break wasn't a bargain! Also very standard room! Lampshade was threadbare!!!
Review 17:Relaxing hotel with great history! Staff were very accommodating!
Review 18:Would have appreciated free parking, and more people on the desk at the busiest check in times. The room was a little smaller than I expected, even after reading reviews that the rooms were dated, especially as I asked for a double and it was two single beds pushed together.
Review 19:Fantastic welcome for my border collie, the staff were fabulous! Great location and easy to park. Great to swim in the evening in a quiet pool. Dogs allowed in the lounge area.
Review 20:The receptionist was unhelpful and rude we only had one towel and as we were going swimming asked her for another she told me they had been busy and hadn't had not had a delivery but the leisure centre would give us towels not so they told us to bring the one's from our room which we didn't have spoke to the lady on reception again who's reply was oh for goodness sake a little rude don't you think
Review 21:Lovely food, clean room nice swimming pool
Review 22:We had a double room which was lovely for the price paid but the bed seemed a very small double so had a restless night but over all was lovely. Also had an evening meal in which I thought was really over priced and tasteless I had pasta in mushroom sauce and cost £16!! I originally wanted a steak but they had ran out and not a lot of choice at all on menu to choose from also had a hot chocolate to drink at the bar which cost £3.50 and was done in the microwave without cream or anything! But again apart from this was a lovely stay and will be going back but eating elsewhere.
Review 23:Lovely area and hotel very grand shops and pubs in walking distance really enjoyed the stay
Review 24:This is not a 4* hotel as advertised on the web. Staff knowledge / experience in their chosen career is non-existent. Hotel literature in rooms state room service breakfast available but when you ring down it is not available as room service?! However, I did manage to get it delivered but my wife's vegetarian option was the worst thing I have ever seen. Menu (2 star hotel food) was limited to starter and main as none of the desserts were available as advertised. Room could do with a proper clean and a sink you can actually use to wash your hands in. Lack of contact from manager, it is 3 weeks now and still no response.
Review 25:Check-in was chaotic and the staff bordering on rudeness. No bedside lights. Only single bedside table. Room excessively noisy next to a Disco that did not finish until 0115 hours.
Review 26:The hotel building is a wonderful example of a railway age Victorian hotel.
Review 27:Being given a twin the first night despite booking a double. The room was too hot and towel rail not adjustable. We had to repack to change rooms for the second night and would have rather been spending that time relaxing.
Review 28:The leisure facilities and grand surroundings. The room we were upgraded to was nice
Review 29:we did not have a room on the first night due to a mix up with bookings .com & the hotel so they arranged for us to stay at another hotel for 1st night
Review 30:taxi transfers to the other hotel and back 2nd night stay we were upgraded to a suite with room service and dinner and breakfast the manager and staff more than made up for the error
Review 31:Reception staff not so good got name wrong put us in single room with extra small put up bed but did swop to the room we booked eventually on check out they said we should have checked out the day before & had only paid for one day had to email them our conformation email didn't even print us out a receipt think reception needs a shake up apart from that nothing.
Review 32:Excellent location lovely old building very ornate inside big grand staircase room was very comfortable and clean.
Review 33:Had to pay for parking, the price of food/drink in the restaurant bar, leisure club very dated and run down
Review 34:Location overlooking the town and the view was very nice
Review 35:Rooms a bit tired and need modernising. A hiccup over vegetarian food - but quickly sorted.
Review 36:Location and value, Breakfast was amazing. All staf freindly and helpful. Room was so warm and comfortable
Review 37:Uncomfortably hot room due to the heated towel rail not being able to be turned off, was told by reception it was being looked into but nothing was done. We did open the window the 3" it could be opened with very little effect.
Review 38:Great location very grand building
Review 39:didn't I know if be staying in a hotel full of dogs barking at all hours of the day and night who takes a big husky dog with them into a hotel
Review 40:the staff were pleasant and helpful at all times the food was good although breakfast was a experience no tea no toast no milk no coffee kept running out of various food
Review 41:Again nothing too bad but the room was a bit tired, the bathroom uninspiring and the windows needing replacing. The heating bill must be a fortune and could be turned down without causing a problem!
Review 42:Its a big hotel and as such you have to accept in this day and age that there will be tired areas. The restaurant / bar areas were excellent and the staff very friendly.
Review 43:very poor decor condition. Seriously needs revamping internally. Not at all what I would rate as 4 stars. Not sure how it got its current rating. Would be a lovely hotel if revamped.
Review 44:Close to town centre. Lovely views and grand building from outside
Review 45:Wi-fi could be better.
Review 46:The location and customer service were excellent. This Hotel is great place to stay to unwind from big city rush. The meal at restaurant was very good. I enjoyed spa treatments at local saloon. Will definetly stay there again.
Review 47:Circular rotating entrance door and steps difficult to negotiate with large suitcase or when loaded with Christmas presents.
Review 48:Excellent reception by staff, very comfortable and warm room. Central location near to many shops, local restaurants and bars.
Review 49:Lovely welcome by reception staff on my arrival and who were helpful with any subsequent questions that I had. I really enjoyed the use of leisure facilities, and, again, friendly staff. Very warm and comfortable room with everything I needed.
Review 50:I booked an additional night extra to the two we had previously booked, despite me ringing to confirm the additional night, when we arrived they could not accommodate us and were not very concerned about their mix up. Spoilt my wife's birthday weekend. Also some poor service in the restaurant.
Review 51:The location
Review 52:The decor was dated and and worn out. The whole place needs major overhall. It was very sad to see such a beautiful hotel been let go. It was originally Selfridge's ,now only just managing to be BHS. Such a grand old lady in such bad shape. This could be a jewel in the from of Buxton, sadly the shine has gone. Whoever own this great building, get some money invested.
Review 53:Staff were very nice especially in breakfast area one girl pretty much her. She was very pleasant. Staff in general were very friendly. There was only one exception , achap on reception late in evening. I quarried the adjustable high temperature in our room. The responds from said member of staff was" what do you want me to do about it". Not the correct responds to a guest
Review 54:The staffs had really bad attitude also I asked for latte I been given a black coffee with just a touch of milk and tasted really horrible! Wasnt worth of the amount of money it tasted like cheap coffee... The rooms were nothing as shown on the picture and had a dump smell the bathroom had lots of damages. Also we requested a late check out which wasn't approved and they hadn't even informed us about our request... the breakfast was average but I was really disappointed that they had tinned fruits instead of fresh fruits.
Review 55:The location was beautiful...easy to find the hotel and right next to the train station.
Review 56:Bathroom was a little dated
Review 57:Staff were very friendly position of hotel is excellent, food was very good.our room was large & warm no complaints whatsoever
Review 58:It would appear the management are a bit economical with the truth, I deliberately upgraded to a standard double room as the single room reviews were so poor. 1st room was in the refurbished front section but had no bath, 2nd one was the last room in the building and was part of the fire escape staircase, I kid you not (room 226 for reference). The picture of the standard double tells a thousand porkies. They also claim to serve top quality produce from renowned meat and cheese suppliers, again I don't think so! But as I have complained to these suppliers, we shall see.
Review 59:This is one of the iconic grand hotels of the Victoria era. It is looking tired in places but is being refurbished and still impresses. Location good for town and lounge bar conservatory has good views. Bar staff very good and accommodated my need for cool ale by throwing some bottles in an ice bucket.Employs local staff who were enthusiastic and conciencious.
Review 60:Check in was a bit slow and staff although very friendly were a bit clueless at times
Review 61:Fantastic position near to everything in town, glorious old building, real Victorian splendour, good breakfast too
Review 62:the cost of parking. The toilet would not always flush properly and the bathroom could do with a refurb.
Review 63:the location central to Buxton. the hotels exterior and interior and swimming pool.. ease of parking.
Review 64:The rooms were dirty I had booked a room for myself and three for my customers and all were dirty and when we complained nothing was done and no apology or refund it was quite embarrassing
Review 65:It was somewhere to sleep
Review 66:No spa and fitness equipment could do with an upgrade
Review 67:The rooms were big and spacious, they had a fitness centre, pool, sauna and steam room which was refreshing in the morning! Would recommend this hotel to anyone
Review 68:Complimentary water had been used but refilled by previous guests but were still left out, but that is more the fault of the previous guests than the staff responsible for room servicing.
Review 69:Staff couldnt be more helpful and friendly.
Review 70:Nothing!
Review 71:The exterior and interior was beautiful - a lovely period building with lots of ornate decoration. The room was spacious and even though it was blowing a gale outside we were nice and snug and comfy.
Review 72:Check in - lady at reception told us wrong times for breakfast - 6am to 10am. In fact 8am to 10am i think. Breakfast was not ready at 8am, some of it was, no coffee out, appeared short on staff.
Review 73:Location and grandness of hotel
Review 74:Food could have been much better!
Review 75:A beautiful old hotel icentrally located but in need of love, the rooms were spacious and well equipped, the staff were very friendly but the facilities were in need of an upgrade
Review 76:The room was a bit more basic than you'd expect, particularly the very dated bathroom.
Review 77:Lovely hotel in a great location. The staff were very pleasant and the breakfast was excellent quality.
Review 78:The lights down the path at the front of the hotel were not put on at night and presented a hazard to anyone using the path.
Review 79:The grandeur of the building and its location.
Review 80:The breakfast was OK but not up the standard of the rest of the service and hotel.
Review 81:The location and proximity to town centre, the property is very impressive. We felt quite comfortable taking the dog with us and it was always warm inside even though it was very cold outside.
Review 82:The breakfast wasn't included and I thought it was ? There was no view from our bedroom wasent bothered about it to be honest
Review 83:Staff was lovely lady at the reception let me use her umbrella :) room was spotless, would defy go back we paid £69 for the night it was worth it I wouldn't want to pay more, the side of the hotel we stayed had just been painted and was fresh & clean
Review 84:Hotel is overpriced, and in need of serious renovation. Heating was from 1 small oil filled radiator as central heating in room did not work, 2 single headboards for 1 double bed.
Review 85:Bar staff and breakfast.
Review 86:This is not a 4 star hotel ,room given had the lift at the side making the room very small, every floor board made a noise when walking around the room
Review 87:Good breakfast
Review 88:Lack of staff, room quite basic and had to chase for room service
Review 89:Grand entrance. Good location for Buxton's main attractions and views overlooking these
Review 90:Rooms seem a little dated, headboard bangs against the wall. But then it is an old hotel. They may lose business travellers when the Premier Inn opens nearby.
Review 91:Staff were welcoming and efficient
Review 92:None
Review 93:Very friendly staff, room was clean and every thing worked, we even had two comfortable chairs. How many hotels only have one chair in a double room???
Review 94:In the restaurant service for dinner was poor and there was a shortage of wines on the list. I settled the bill at about 10.50am and then when checking my credit card statement found my card had been debited a further £77.80
Review 95:Location suited us.
Review 96:Nothing very bad but checkout took longer than it should because there was only one receptionist on the desk and also the printer was very slow! Perhaps needs better staffing at that time of day and some new IT equipment!
Review 97:All staff - housekeeping, bar, reception - were all lovely - friendly but efficient and professional. Nice large bedroom and bedroom. Very comfy bed. Quiet. Free parking. Great location. Beautiful old building and features, especially the staircase - wow!
Review 98:The room was not made up. The food selection and quality was poor. (Breakfast was OK). There were insufficient plug sockets in the room.
Review 99:The position of the hotel was convenient
Review 100:I ran the shower but no hot water came out, tried the bath same problem, ran the hot tap on the sink still no hot water, I got dressed and reported it at reception who stated they knew it was a problem but just run the shower and hot tap at the same time for 5-10 minutes and it would be OK, and it was, but why not put a notice in the room? Pretty noisy in our room as we were near to the air con for the hotel.
Review 101:Good location and a great looking building.
Review 102:Nothing
Review 103:Staff very nice and welcoming...beautiful hotel, centralised, easy to locate...beautiful and very clean rooms with good views and comfortable beds...Really loved it and can't wait to go back !
Review 104:Room was cold -even with oil filled radiator that was placed in the room. Restaurant menu had three or four dishes to choose from Main doors broken when arrived Heated towel rail didn't work Couldn't get wifi in room Plumbing made loud noises Staff not overly concerned about any issues Work men doing work (sanding skirting boards and painting) Parking was expensive and an additional cost that wasn't clear when booking
Review 105:Alternative Restaurants were close
Review 106:Victorian grandeur preserved for us to enjoy. A well presented hotel with modern facilities though like all old buildings, the signs of a need for maintenance are evident. The hotel was a pleasure to stay in with a real offer beyond the room itself; there are lounges, bars restaurant and a leisure suite.
Review 107:bedrooms need updating, very basic. needs updating in corridors, lifts and behind the scenes areas
Review 108:location perfect, from outside looks great, very grand. staff were very helpful.
Review 109:Not happy being told to pay for breakfast when we had already paid at booking.......staff were adamant we hadn't paid and wouldn't listen to us......turned out we were right and they had to refund us!!!!!
Review 110:We had a super stay in this very grand hotel the room was spacious bed large and comfy and the self service breakfast was hot and more than sufficient to start the day.
Review 111:Rooms lovely. Bed super comfy. Lovely old building. Only criticism wehave was in the breakfast room. Curtains weren't opened and lots oftables left uncleared despite staff stood around.
Review 112:Room was horrible (126) separate toilet but couldn't manoeuvre inside with the door closed . No breakfast included, couldn't charge anything to my room. Had to pay for parking. no wifi in the room
Review 113:Location.
Review 114:Had to move rooms due to the noisiest plumbing I have ever heard. My new room had window open when I went in, stayed swelteringly hot all night. Could not sleep much.
Review 115:Great location, good staff
Review 116:Feel like most hotels rather expensive Being charged £ 4.50 per day car park should be free as a resident Restaurant and wine prices too expensive Bathroom sundries very sparce 1 minute soap i shampoo etc etc Decor and carpets looking tired now having stopped on a least 2 occassions in the past Too few staff and disorganised on one breakfast sitting out of our 2 night stay
Review 117:The location of the hotl for all Buxtons facilities Staff helpful and polite Excellent buffet breakfast
Review 118:We arrived early but popped in to ensure we had a booking as I had forgotten my booking form. There was no welcome or smile from the male receptionist just a statement that booking was not until 3pm. I explained why I had come in early and he did confirm they were aware of the booking. However, when returned later the female receptionist was very welcoming and friendly. However trivial these sound I have the following comments as this is supposed to be a 4* hotel. No biscuits on the tea tray, poor selection & display of toiletries, one set of towels hidden in the wardrobe when the booking was for 2 persons. The toilet door was obviously recycled from the public area toilets. Very cheap plastic toilet seat. Woodwork in bathroom shabby. Quite a grumpy housekeeper when I requested a black bag for our dirty walking boots. You did ask!
Review 119:The building and setting are fabulous with great views although a little shabby in places. The breakfast was very nice.
Review 120:Having to pay for car parking and that it has been taken over by Britannia Hotels. The sparse bar and willing but untrained general staff Can't have someone on the bar on a Saturday night who does not know what Drambuie is!
Review 121:The building and position
Review 122:Water pressure in the shower was not that great but tolerable. The hotel is a bit old but it is very clean.
Review 123:Location was good. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 124:Evening meal - mediocre - we had to repeatedly ask for the remainder of the meals - some having arrived others not. Set meal was expensive for the quality. Wines on wine list no longer in stock. No obvious manager
Review 125:The breakfast - well organised and good Swimming pool Location
Review 126:1. staff rude and blunt, room was not ready at 3pm check in time. 2. Ensuite had only net curtain on window, so when light on could see from out side.Had to use atowel to cover window 3. Cobwebs on the wall in your room. 4 At breakfast had struggle to find a clean table , as dirty dishes left on them.
Review 127:Location
Review 128:The room was so hot the radiator was off with the window open but old pipes running up the walls were piping hot. The bathroom was dirty toilet was dirty the toilet roll holder was broken, the bedroom was cramped and very battered and bruised not at all pleasant. When I complained the reception staff said he was from another hotel, basically not interested.
Review 129:The exterior and location
Review 130:Very over priced, we had an executive room with twin beds, clean but very sparsely furnished. Breakfast was self serve and adequate. Definitely would not stay there again!
Review 131:Very convenient situation and close to some decent restaurants.
Review 132:Very rude staff on reception on arrival not a great first impression. Room clean but shower terrible. Couldn't even stand up in it as the room was on the top floor and the ceiling sloped. Expensive room not good value for money
Review 133:Comfy bed
Review 134:Building could do with updates and general maintenance. Staff at breakfast inattentive and breakfast experience very poor.
Review 135:Ideal central location within Buxton - all facilities available. Grand old building.
Review 136:Hotel decor very tired. Carpets worn, paint faded. Duty manager on Saturday was clueless. Didn't know how to get my bike from locked room. Hair on side of bath. Bed & pillows sub-standard. I had to sleep on a towel for comfort. This hotel needs upgrading. Very sad to see such a wonderful building in such a poor state.
Review 137:Wonderful position. Lovely views from room.
Review 138:In need of renovation and modernising. Laundry could be cleaner -towels, and room was small with ancient bathroom. Insufficient staff
Review 139:Looked impressive from the outside!
Review 140:Breakfast wasn't included in our deal and would have added a lot to the cost of the stay so we went over the road to the cafe in the Dome.
Review 141:Stayed in a family room which was plenty big enough for three of us. Use of the swimming pool. Easy walk to some really good cafes and restaurants and easy drive to Chatsworth and other Peak District attractions
Review 142:The room (even after we had been changed from a tiny one with no central heating and a kettle we couldn't get to boil) was very dreary with a small bed. The hotel generally is very shabby. We were not reminded when we checked in that we hadn't ordered breakfast. We did have it but at £12.95 it was hideously expensive. The coffee was like dishwater and the fruit on offer all tinned and swimming in sugar syrup. The wifi, which worked in the lobby, did not reach our room.
Review 143:Apart from the location and good parking very little.
