Reviews for The Royal Castle Hotel
Review 1:Everything was perfect. We especially appreciated the 'hands on' management style of the owner. The food was exceptional, as was the view, and the staff were extremely helpful and courteous.
Review 2:This hotel is a gem - no leisure or spa facilities, no fancy food - just an excellent all round typical english hotel in the centre of everything that is happening in Dartmouth. The staff are awesome - meaning that the staff training is superb - this is what makes it special.
Review 3:4 poster bed not my personal style. Shower hot water performance was dependent on demand from elsewhere in hotel therefore not consistent.
Review 4:Car parking arrangements were fine. Room was spacious and bathroom modern. Food and restaurant service were brilliant. Staff approach to customers was first class.
Review 5:The hotel is beautifully located in the centre of Dartmouth with a view over the river Dart from some of the bedrooms and from the Grill room. It is a very attractive hotel, the staff are very helpful and the food is excellent.
Review 6:We liked friendly helpful staff, Good menu with delicious food, ambient atmosphere. Comfortable clean room. Excellent view of the river and quay from the grill room.
Review 7:Not keen on having a room where the ''outside' window overlooked the internal stairway & landing. Felt exposed & felt I had to keep the curtain closed . However, I did sleep well despite this.
Review 8:Friendly staff, very helpful. Cleanliness issue raised & promptly rectified. Central location. Fantastic food
Review 9:The weather but that's not the hotels fault lol ;-)
Review 10:Everything about this hotel was great, great staff, great location, great food, great ales the staff even park your car at no extra cost now that's a big plus in my eyes.
Review 11:Breakfast service a little slow. I think they forgot us!
Review 12:Manager went out of his way to help me with a flat tyre. Very helpful in a difficult situation..
Review 13:Room had vent from kitchen near it so you could smell everything that was being cooked ! Bed 4 poster but just a standard double and far too small for us £167 bed and breakfast - you are in to 5 star prices for 3 star accommodation Definately not value for money
Review 14:Cannot beat the location
Review 15:I have always loved the warm, friendly atmosphere of this unique and quirky hotel and have made many visits there over the years. It was a delight to find that nothing has changed.
Review 16:The climb up several sets of stairs to our room was a bit of a challenge but you get used to it! Perhaps a few more digital channels would have been useful.
Review 17:All hotel staff we encountered were both courteous and efficient. A good team. Breakfast selection excellent and freshly cooked to order. We also enjoyed two extremely high quality meals in The Grill Room.
Review 18:Noise from other rooms early in the morning. In spite of asking for a room that wasn't over looking the atrium, was given one of these rooms.
Review 19:Great place to stay in Dartmouth, fantastic restaurant and bar. Great location
Review 20:My car broke down. Not because of the hotel.
Review 21:Good clean room with comfortable beds and decent bathroom. Food excellent in restaurant and bar. Bar humming, centre of the community
Review 22:Price was a bit toppy & a couple of bits of furniture in the bedroom were a bit flimsy.
Review 23:Liked the helpful staff & generally relaxed feel of the place. The food was excellent in terms of taste & presentation & I think the overall experience was very good.
Review 24:Stairs to the very top floor were a little challenging but we were aware there was no lift when we booked.
Review 25:Location and atmosphere in hotel fantastic. Room was lovely also. Staff at reception and in grill room all friendly and helpful.
Review 26:we had room 27 which really should not be a guest room in the roof void /loft. I will stay again but must have room on lower level the top stairs are tough going and poorly lit and bathroom ceiling on a slope, kept banging my head.
Review 27:the central location was lovely and friendly staff
Review 28:The staff couldn't have tried harder felt very well looked after. They are credit to your business The Dart Marina could take a leaf from your book. Maybe you could train their staff.Fantastic stay can't wait to come back.
Review 29:The second night I was there I had to wait 40 minutes before I was served with my starter so I did not use The Grill Room again.
Review 30:My bedroom was lovely I booked a room with a river view and the extra money was worth it. The jacuzzi bath was great. The food was excellent beautifully cooked.
Review 31:Just the stairs
Review 32:Superb location for both the town and the river. Unusual quirky building, but lots of steps especially if you are in the "attic "rooms, which we were. However, the room was delightful and very unusual. Good food, friendly staff and an OTT proprietor!
Review 33:Shabby - mouldy blinds, dirty bathroom - old shaving whiskers in sink, cracking plaster & skirtings, dirty faded and musty-smelling carpets, tattered old tables in dining room - photos to back this up. Overpriced. Bit of a dump. Big noisy pub downstairs not ideal for kids.
Review 34:Rooms were quite small, shower and bathroom was average for the quality of hotel. Think value wasn't great for the size of room and quality of the bathroom.
Review 35:Great location, friendly staff, good bar and good breakfast.
Review 36:The ordinary size double bed was too small, so we did not have a good night's sleep. If they upgraded beds to kingsize it would be a good move!
Review 37:fantastic location and views
Review 38:After eating previously at the Castle we decided it would be a central location for our stay. We were delighted on our arrival to learn that we had been upgraded to a quay view room, simply we were told, because they could. A fantastic room, with an even more fantastic view. We were also delighted with the selection available for breakfast.
Review 39:Breakfast was a little disorganised on the Sunday morning when we and the tables around us had to request items several times. I got a warning on my tab that someone in the public area was trying to Hack in to my tab on the guest wifi.
Review 40:Wonderful room with super views. Staff very helpful.
Review 41:Very uncomfortable bed , small cramped room. Breakfast good , evening meal passable , poor soup (tinned ???)
Review 42:Near to where I needed to be in the morning. Good free wifi
Review 43:We enjoyed all aspects of your great hotel. The friendly, helpful staff, the service, you all made our stay really enjoyable...we would most certainly come again.
Review 44:The whole experience of the hotel, a very warm welcome, valet parking, all the staff friendly and always spoke. Fine dining and history all rolled into one
Review 45:Privately owned - From the moment we arrived the staff were very welcoming, attentive and pleasant without being in the way. Location 10/10. The building is very quirky and interesting, yet comfortable.
Review 46:Location was lovely and international staff were helpful. Food, especially the super breakfast, was much appreciated. The very large jacuzzi was fun and unusual, but poor sound insulation made full enjoyment of the very pleasant room less than hoped for.
Review 47:Perfect location with river view. Excellent food. Attentive staff. Bath robes. Chocolates left by the owners for our silver wedding anniversary.
Review 48:Very friendly staff and the standard of service was excellent. We were served breakfast in a room to ourselves so our dog could stay with us, she was even given a sausage as a treat. Excellent we will be back!
Review 49:There are alot of stairs and no lift in this hotel. However the porter will take your bags to and from your room.
Review 50:A very friendly, high quality old coaching inn. The food was of a high standard and the old bar was lovely. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Our room was traditional in decor with a four poster bed.The ensuite had a jacuzzi bath.
Review 51:Looking forward to a quite/relaxing breakfast and ending up sitting next to a large family group with half a dozen noisy toddlers.
Review 52:Great location, fantastic staff, excellent food, comfortable river view room ...... atmosphere & environment is very different from mainstream hotels but in a good way.
Review 53:The young staff were all very helpful and polite and nothing was too much bother for them. The even collected our cases from our room when we left . The bathroom was sparklingly clean. I
Review 54:Excellent service. Hotel full of interesting artworks etc. Good food (not just breakfast but other meals too). Busy central location meant car had to be valet-parked but the hotel did this very efficiently
Review 55:Bed very uncomfortable and pillows very hard came home with bad back and headache from not much sleep due to materace and pillows.
Review 56:Lovely view from our room looking out at River Dart.
Review 57:Nothing!
Review 58:Great location in Dartmouth. The service was second to none from start to finish. We were lucky enough to get upgraded to room 6 as it was my birthday, which was lovely with a beautiful view. The room was large and spacious. The bar was lively and welcoming and the breakfast was great - a great selection. Would definitely recommend the Royal Castle.
Review 59:The room we had was overlooking the front and very noisy with wagons emptying hind in the night and strimmers at 8am! Also very noisy seagulls but recognise you can't do much about that! Didn't get a good nights sleep. We will come back but book a room at the back.
Review 60:Food and friendliness and efficiency of staff
Review 61:Holiday goes too quickly. They really must do something about that!
Review 62:Walking back in through the that front entrance is such a good feeling knowing what's coming. This is one of the best hotels I've been in...amazing value for money, they can't do enough for you....
Review 63:Couldn't stand up in en suite. Roof to low The owners curt attitude to a waitress very poor in earshot at breakfast.
Review 64:Great location quirky decor
Review 65:Previous guests had left "adult pleasure products" in the Gideon Bible draw! The hotel staff dealt with it well though. Hotel is old with creaky floors so rooms above may be noisy as people move around in their rooms. A wedding was a a bit disruptive when we arrived.
Review 66:The hotel is very well appointed. The staff are good. The valet car parking is good. The rooms are excellent (at least ours was). Proprietor was highly visible and interested in his guests and improving the service or keeping it at a high level.
Review 67:There isn't anything I didn't like ....
Review 68:Great location , friendly staff, nice room comfortable bed ... Excellent as I expected , will definitely book again , soon...
Review 69:It rained just as we were leaving.
Review 70:The food was excellent at dinner, as was the service. We arrived early and unloaded the cars leaving the luggage in the care of reception and when we came to book in after an enjoyable and leisurely lunch, the luggage was in our well appointed river view rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors. We expected car parking to be a problem but they have it down to a fine art, taking the cars to the car park and retrieving them as soon as requested.
Review 71:The only drawback is the lack of a lift. The bedrooms are all on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors, so for anyone with a health or infirmity problem this is a definite disadvantage. My wife is asthmatic so climbing to our 3rd floor room was difficult.
Review 72:The food, especially the breakfasts, is excellent. The valet parking scheme is very helpful as parking in the vicinity is restricted, especially in the high season. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful.
Review 73:Unique v pleasant accommodation in "lookout room" with river view - although several fights of stairs a challenge part of its charm. Food excellent.
Review 74:We wish we had been given the option of a lower room, so that the stairs were not so daunting especially for my Husband
Review 75:The breakfasts were marvellous and the staff excellent. Also we loved the very big towels and the hot towel rail.
Review 76:One party member had mobility problems and there is no lift and a lot of stairs (as one would expect in a 17th century building). The hotel, happily found her a room on the 1st floor, which minimised the problem.
Review 77:Service, food , location general ambiance.
Review 78:A bit expensive but reasonable due to location
Review 79:Very friendly staff, couldn't do enough to fix bath issue. Very comfortable stay. Lovely quirky hotel in great location.
Review 80:Nothing to dislike!
Review 81:The hotel was welcoming with an olde worlde atmosphere which suited its environment and a nautical theme being next to tge harbour.
Review 82:The staff did everything they could to make our stay as pleasant as possible. As soon as we arrived our cases were taken to our room while our car was driven off to be parked nearby. Wonderful service.
Review 83:We couldn't complain about anything, the only comment we had was that the water in the shower in the morning ran warm, not hot but everything else was just perfect.
Review 84:The hotel was full of history and charm, the staff were helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Our room was large, comfortable and clean with a wonderful view of the harbour and gardens. You could not fault the breakfast, such a wonderful choice of food - thank you for making our wedding anniversary break so special.
Review 85:Didn't lik being given a sub standard room up in the attic because we had booked via a third party site . When we complained we were given a room more like we expected for the high price . After that it was all fine .
Review 86:Cooked breakfast was very good .
Review 87:There was only one problem which I over came, was the shaver point in room 27 didn't work. I did report it to the Receptionist but nothing happened.
Review 88:What can I say, Our complete stay at the Royal Castle Hotel was absolutely superb, the staff were polite, they couldn't do enough for you, nothing was to much trouble for them.
Review 89:We were staying to attend a family funeral and we found the total hotel experience to be first class. In particular the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Nothing was too much trouble.
Review 90:Running live entertainment in a hotel is bound to upset somebody - organising thumping beat music until 11.00pm is just stupid in a hotel that is catering for guests staying the night - they are incompatible.
Review 91:Location is good and the bar downstairs is what a bar should be.
Review 92:People were talking and laughing loudly until the early hours outside our room but in a communal area. The Manager kindly upgraded us free of charge the next night.
Review 93:Staff very kind and attentive.
Review 94:Bed was a little lumpy and you could not stand up straight in the shower due to low ceiling and water flow very poor
Review 95:Fantastic staff. Valet Parking. Location, location, location. Interesting hotel, furniture and history. Lovely room with a fantastic view. Great food and atmosphere in the pub.
Review 96:Our whole experience at the Royal Castle was absolutely wonderful. The staff were amazingly kind and helpful from the minute we walked into reception (even posting on something which I left behind without a hint that I'd been any trouble); the building is wonderful, historic and fascinating, and our room was amazing with great view of the river and lovely clean facilities. We didn't want to leave and will certainly come back to try what looked like a lovely restaurant: we had a great breakfast but unfortunately it was closed for a comedy night the evening before. Thank you very much to all!
Review 97:We are used to a King size bed at home so found the Double in our Harbour/River view room less than comfortable. Singles would have been better. We had Dinner in the Grill room one evening. The food excellent but it was a long time in the coming.
Review 98:Excellent location. Friendly and helpful staff. Good Breakfast buffet.
Review 99:The bed was a 'romantic' four poster, but we would have preferred a more pragmatic king-sized one.
Review 100:Excellent location and atmosphere, with very friendly and helpful staff.
Review 101:being on the top floor as we are both suffering with dodgy knees!
Review 102:warm welcome, food, cheerful lounge with open fire, the pets welcome policy - all suited and appreciated by us.
Review 103:There is no lift, which could be a problem as some of the rooms are on the fourth floor. The restaurant is on the first floor as is the ladies cloakroom. When we commented about this the owner said that every assistance would be given to any guest wishing to avail themselves of these facilities.
Review 104:The hotel is very old and absolutely oozes character. All the rooms were individually styled with every attention to detail. The staff were friendly and helpful and the restaurant an absolute delight both from location point of view, the quality of food and the service. They even give you linen napkins at breakfast time. Fresh raspberries for breakfast was a real treat. This is not the cheapest hotel in Dartmouth but I would say definitely the best.
Review 105:Food not consistent, not hot not value for money, too many chips too much garlic poor vegetable selection. Bar overpriced. Room rather cramped. light pull detached from ceiling and tied to bed rail! Kept banging head on shelf above kettle.
Review 106:Staff were very good, friendly and helpful. Dog bed, toy and treats enjoyed by Jak as was the fuss and attention he got. Card and chocolates for our anniversary was a lovely surprise. Breakfast selection was very good.
Review 107:vibrating noise from laundry below? or from air extractor fan meant it was noisy with window open. no lift - room was top floor up 3 flights of stairs. Last set of stairs quite steep. could hear next door occupants speaking/moving around.
Review 108:4 poster bed tea/coffee & biscuits fizzy & still water spa bath toiletries towels and bath robe shoe cleaning kit in wardrobe twice daily housekeeping service valet car parking suitcases carried to room. lovely evening meal & breakfast very friendly staff spotlessly clean
Review 109:Difficult to park. So do as email says and park outside hotel (probably double park) and unload. Tell hotel you have arrived and your car will be driven away and put in hotel car park.
Review 110:Lovely receptionist. Fantastic breakfast. Lovely atmosphere.
Review 111:the bed in room 29 is as old as me with far more springs hanging out of it. the pillows are also in there late teens. shame really, becouse we loved the place.
Review 112:To be honest it's hard to find anything we didn't like.
Review 113:Staff always around to help and advise, no shortage of staff which is rare these days. Great Hotel all round, food great, very clean and nice friendly welcome. Even the owner came to chat one breakfast. Full marks to all.
Review 114:Might be expensive for family stay and not perhaps for youngsters.
Review 115:Style (civilised), comfort (room well serviced, bars roomy), size (not too big), friendliness (personal touches, good staff), food (good menu, good service), site (centre of town).
Review 116:Having to go home !!!!
Review 117:The hotel & location is perfect for a relaxing weekend break. The staff in the hotel are first class & a credit to the owner who incidentally took time to speak to guests in the morning whilst they were enjoying breakfast.. We enjoyed the food every evening & the atmosphere in the bar was lively & entertaining with an excellent ambiance.
Review 118:Bathroom with plenty of hot water but virtually no cold at all which makes having a bath a nightmare.Think you should expect to have cold water at that price
Review 119:Quiet room with aircon
Review 120:Bed was to small, only a double. too much clutter in the room. Needs revamp! Noisy at the front of the hotel late at night and early morning. however, best views. drain smell outside the front door desperately needs looking at!!!
Review 121:Mould on bathroom walls. Paper thin walls (we could hear conversation and snoring from the room next door!). Noise from bar below. Pink plastic chandelier in desperate need of removal, dismantling and cleaning.
Review 122:Lovely, welcoming and attentive staff. Fabulous breakfast. Good bar food. Great central location and lovely view.
Review 123:the room was very small the location of the room was on the top floor, with to many stairs to climb for 70 year old couple,
Review 124:The food was good, tea and coffee in the room was good
Review 125:Our room in the roof space was big enough, but had too much roof. I could not stand upright in the shower or to shave over the washbasin. The first floor restaurant served high priced, mediocre food and the european staff were at best disinterested, although they were prepared to argue amongst themselves.
Review 126:Located in the town centre and handy for everything. A traditional setting with a great atmosphere and interesting artefacts. A popular bar staffed by hard working and attentive young people who serve excellent food. With the exception of the restaurant all the staff were pleasant and helpful.
Review 127:We were in a room at the rear of the hotel and the hourly chimes of the clock on the church steeple made sleep eratic
Review 128:We liked the quirkiness of the hotel and thye friendliness and professionalism of the stall. The food was also excellent
